Riverbend Inn & Vineyard In February 2021, Andrew Peller Limited purchased the Riverbend Inn & Vineyard.

The historic Inn was built in 1860 and sits on 17 acres of prime vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Vidal). The Inn closed in late 2020 due to the pandemic and will re-open this Spring with new investments to enhance the Inn’s offering offering. There are 21 rooms at the inn as well as a restaurant for a perfect wine country getaway.

Wayne Gretzky Estates Estate Series Chardonnay

This Chardonnay is smooth and rich with flavours of caramelized sugar, dried apples and butter. Pair with honey ham, creamy mashed potatoes, charcuterie boards and shellfish.

WINEMAKER’S NOTEBOOK In the vineyard, the shoots are beginning to grow, and flowering will start later in June. This first stage will result in grape clusters and we’ll adjust yield, or density, on the vine by shoot thinning. It’s hard to believe that we’ll see fruit in less than 90 days.

In the cellar, we’ve been busy bottling all the 2020 aromatics, just in time for patio season! It’s also time to begin harvest preparations. We are currently awaiting our barrel orders to arrive from our coopers in France and the US.

Wayne Gretzky Estates Estate Series Cabernet Merlot 2018 $29.95/750 ml

Medium to full-bodied and structured

Winemaker’s notes: A classic blend of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Cabernet Franc and 23% Merlot, all harvested from the vineyards within the Niagara Peninsula.

The individual wines were aged for 12 months in 60% French and 40% American oak barrels, before the final assemblage was created. A full malolactic fermentation was completed in barrel to soften the mouthfeel.

Flavour profile: Garnet in colour with a warm and rich bouquet of black currant, blackberry, sweet spice, cigar box, tobacco leaf and oak. On the palate you’ll find dark fruit flavours complemented by notes of spice, cocoa powder and oak. Notes of dark berries, black tea and spice linger on the extra-dry finish.

Best served: Serve at a cool room temperature of 17 to 18°C. Drink now to 2024.

Wayne Gretzky Estates Rosé 2020

$16.95/200 ml

ORIGIN: VQA Niagara Peninsula STYLE: Dry and refreshing ALCOHOL: 12%

Winemaker’s notes: The 2020 Rosé blend consists of 65% Pinot Noir, 21.4% Gamay Noir, 10.4% Pinot Grigio and a small combination of Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Meunier, all harvested from our long-standing growers within the Niagara Peninsula. The red varietals were given four hours of skin contact, then gently pressed, and cool fermented in stainless steel. The Pinot Grigio was gently pressed and cool fermented in stainless steel. The wines were then blended and aged for a short period of time to enhance the fresh fruit aromas and flavours.

Flavour profile: Coral copper pink in colour with a fresh aroma of ripe peach, melon, strawberry, and Rainier cherry. The mouthfeel is smooth, refreshing and dry with flavours of red berries, crab apple, melon and rhubarb. Refreshing fruit flavours of red berries, pink grapefruit and crab apple linger on the finish.

Best served: Serve chilled at 10 to 12°C. Drink while young and fresh.
