Welcome to the October 2017 issue of Wests magazine. This is the last issue of the year, and what a year it’s been.

The big news over the past few months, of course, has been the proposed acquisition of the Newcastle Knights.

At the time of going to press we are completing the due diligence, but all being well we will be heading along nicely to the Knights officially becoming a subsidiary of Wests from 1 November.

This is a landmark event in the history of Wests and the Newcastle Knights. It’s something that’s been talked about for many years, and it’s always seemed to have a lot of natural synergy. After all, even though the Wests business now incorporates entertainment, restaurants and accommodation, its roots are firmly in rugby league.

Rest assured, however, this isn’t a decision that’s been made lightly or sentimentally, which is why we invited all full members to have their say. It’s a decision we feel is best for the business, best for the Knights, and will deliver great benefits to the local community and the region as a whole, and we thank the 93% of members who supported the decision.

To those that didn’t support it, thank you too.

We understand the objections that were raised, we listened to them carefully, however as a board, we feel the potential benefits significantly outweigh the potential downsides.

A successful professional sports team radiates positivity, and we sincerely believe that, with an awful lot of hard work, we can make the Knights a force in the NRL.
