here’s no doubt the sheer number of Baby Boomers is putting pressure on the health system.

Talk is growing ever-louder of funding our own health and privatisation on the American model.

Health insurance is like trying to compare apples and oranges — cases of them — so much so that it’s now the subject of a federal government inquiry with a view to “deep” reform.

Then there’s the private hospitals who have a duty of care to shareholders as well as to patients. While the glossy brochures are worthy of any good hotel, often they don’t live up to the hype. And expectations are no doubt higher because of the 5-star premiums.

Reporter Julie Lake, a committed private hospital user herself, found her

Contents research for this month’s story a fascinating experience. She spoke to almost 100 people, from family and friends to strangers she met in hospital and doctor’s waiting rooms as well as residents of her retirement village.

The almost universal opinion was that while private hospitals are the way to go, they need to lift their game and, strangely, it’s the little things that matter. Medically, they do a fine job and they rate highly in the golden staph prevention stakes, but cost-cutting in areas such as administration and particularly food, leaves a bit to be desired.

Food may seem frivolous in health care but it was a point consistently raised, the feeling that you get “public hospital food at private hospital prices”.

The trouble is they can get away with it because demand mostly exceeds supply. It’s a situation that is going to continue and continue to worsen.

Julie’s advice is that it’s worth considering separate health policies if one partner is going to be more likely to need certain treatments than the other.

Going private - are you getting what you pay for?

The rising cost of health care is causing many of us to re-examine our health insurance policies. JULIE LAKE investigates the value of private health.

A

ccording to the Consumers Health Forum, “the persistently negative revelations about the rising costs and uncertainty plaguing health insurance have culminated recently in the first decline in the membership rate for years”.

And this is despite the plethora of regulations, tax incentives and $6 billion rebate that the government hoped would encourage people into health cover.

When Liz Cole had to be rushed to hospital in the early hours of the morning and the paramedics asked for her preferred destination, she chose the nearest private hospital. “It was brand new and stylish with immediate attention from medical staff, good

nurse-to-patient ratio and a pleasant room with state-of-the-art technology.

But from my window I had a view of the reputedly very good and quite new public hospital and all I could think was: “If I’d gone in there it would cost me nothing!”

Liz and her husband pay about $4500 a year for private health cover that includes top hospital benefits.

By contrast, retired businessman Terry Langdon pays nothing. He has never had private insurance because, he says, he can’t see the value in it.

He and his wife Sheryl have nothing but praise for the two public hospitals in their area and although agreeing that the waiting list can be long for certain elective procedures, they say they’ve

never had to wait for more urgent treatment.

When Sheryl was taken to hospital with pneumonia she was admitted and treated without delay.

Asked what he would do if he needed major elective surgery, such as a hip replacement, Terry said he would first check the waiting list at the public hospital and, if too long, would consider having it done in a private hospital at his own cost – using the money he’d saved over the years by not having private insurance.

“Things have changed since I was young,” says retiree Rob Plum who has spent many weeks in private hospitals during the past five years and always seeks “no gap” surgeons who operate for the scheduled fee.

“Today the public hospitals seem to be more caring whereas the private hospitals want their money up front and are always shoving complicated forms in front of you, whether you are fit to sign them or not,” he says.

Jeweller Alastair Bax agrees and says that in both of the large, well-known Brisbane private hospitals in which he and his wife spent time recently, there was a conspicuous lack of nursing attention and the mostly pre-packaged food was “dreadful”.

Despite this, Alastair pays for top private hospital cover, with a $500 a year excess, because: “I like to choose my own doctor and I don’t want to wait for an operation.” However, he doesn’t pay for “extras” such as dental and optometry.

“It’s cheaper if you keep your money in the bank and pay up when necessary,” he says.

Many are critical of private hospitals

and it appears that the long-held community perception that private hospital care is superior to public, no longer holds as true as it once did.

Many private hospitals that were once run by churches now have to walk a fine line keeping the shareholders happy as well as the patients.

Common criticisms include general maladministration, petty cost-cutting (one patient says he was told to wash his own bandages!), poor nurse-to-patient ratio (with contract nurses unfamiliar with ward procedures and sometimes working double shifts), poor food and a “profits before patients” attitude.

Rob Plum says of his recent stint in a new private hospital operated by a major healthcare provider: “Medical care was as good as you’d expect for the price but the administration was chaotic and uncoordinated. The left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing and the patients suffer for it.

“When my wife rang up to enquire how I was they told her I’d been discharged. Actually I was still in the operating theatre.”

Despite such criticisms, statistics show that most Queenslanders of retirement age and older still favour having private health cover for both hospitalisation and designated “extras” such as dental care.

Some even recommend using the public system for emergencies and major conditions such as heart trouble and cancer, while “going private” for elective surgery.

And only the rich can afford such surgery without insurance.

COVER STORY <from previous page Health Care Australia shows that the number of claims topping $10,000 is increasing, with many exceeding $50,000 and the highest in the past year reaching a whopping $446,803 for treatment of an aortic aneurism. A hip operation usually costs at least $22,000 without private cover, otherwise it’s about $4000 in out-of-pocket expenses.

CEO Dr Rachel David, in quoting these figures, says: “It’s easy to understand why health cover provides peace of mind for more than 13 million Australians.”

These treatments are of course available free at a public hospital but with Queensland still not quite meeting the Australian Medical Association’s target for minimal waiting times (though doing better than most other states) you will have to join the queue for all except the most urgent surgery/treatments.

That’s up to 90 days for semi-urgent cases and 365 days if non-urgent, for example for some joint replacements and cataract surgery.

For those older citizens who prefer not to wait, finding the best deal in hospital cover, and ancillary health care such as dental and optometry, is very important.

Fortunately, with more than 30 health fund providers from which to choose, competition among them is fierce.

However, selecting from the almost 120 separate policies on offer is a challenge.

It may help to consult one of the comparison specialists but bear in mind that these companies usually earn a commission if you change provider.

This vast range of health funds and policies is one of the aspects of private health cover that most concerns consumers – and the Federal Government that is clearly determined to coerce us all into private medical insurance.

The difficulty of finding the right policy has become a major focus for several consumer associations including the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission which is pushing for greater transparency in, and regulation of, the health insurance industry. Specifically, there needs to be clarity about the standardisation of terminology such as “no gap” and “known gap” and the need to review requirements for minimum policy coverage given the growth of restrictions and inclusions.

Health Minister Sussan Ley admits that while private health insurance is a fundamental part of our national health system, a survey conducted last year showed that the majority of the 40,000 consumers who responded believed the current system was frustrating and didn’t offer good value for money.

So the Federal Government has done what governments love to do and formed a committee, to oversee reforms in the private health sector.

The committee will represent consumers, medical associations, health professionals, profit and not-for-profit private health care providers, private insurance experts, private hospitals and a

couple of peak industry bodies.

IT WILL BE CHARGED WITH: • Advising on the implementation of the Turnbull Government’s reforms to private health insurance, including the development of easy-to-understand categories of health insurance, so that consumers understand what their policies will and will not cover • Addressing regulatory issues that are adding to the cost of premiums and discouraging innovation • Developing a private health insurance product designed specifically for Australians living in rural and remote areas Another consumer body, The Consumers Health Forum, has enthusiastically endorsed this move, arguing that medical rebates could be better targeted in the interests of taxpayers and consumers, and also that policies not meeting its criteria for reasonable cover, simplicity and comparability should not be eligible for the government rebate.

In the meantime, those battling to meet the cost of private medical insurance still have to try and get the most bang for their buck and it may help

to consult one of the comparison specialists – while bearing in mind that these companies do earn commissions if you change your provider.

A retired couple with full hospital and extra benefits cover can expect to pay $320-$380 a month.

Health insurance specialist Alex Scoffell of comparethemarket.com.au recommends not being guided by price alone, but also by quality of customer service and whether you prefer your provider to be a not-for-profit mutual fund or a for-profit public company.

Scoffell says you may get the best deal by insuring with two different funds, one for hospital cover and one for the extras that may include everything from dental care to acupuncture. It is important to examine exactly what each is offering in any given package so you pay only for what you need, particularly noting factors such as benefit limits, hospital admission excess and just what services such as some radiology and pathology, are covered by your insurer.

During the past year, some hospital patients have had nasty surprises when they found themselves paying for services which were no longer covered by either Medicare of their insurer.

Those interested in changing or comparing their health insurance policy should visit privatehealth.gov.au and check the rating of your local hospitals at MyHospitals.gov.au although the information is limited.

It does not, for example, explain the real issue here – that the high cost of medical technologies available in our hospitals today is posing a considerable challenge to state and federal governments, private hospital operators, private health insurers and, ultimately, patients.

Samsung owners advised to seek a refund

C

onsumer group Choice says consumers who purchased a Samsung Galaxy Note7 phone outright should seek an immediate refund following the global tech giant’s failed product launch which has seen 35 incidents around the world.

“Learn from Samsung’s flawed washing machine recall and don’t mess around with a repair or a replacement but seek a full refund,” says Tom Godfrey.

“The fact is you don’t want one of these flaming devices in your pocket.”

In one alleged incident in Perth a Samsung device fail left burn marks on a hotel bed and carpet.

It is understood Samsung is investigating a number of incidents across Australia.

“Regardless of what the company claims, if you are in any way concerned about your new Samsung Note7 don’t hesitate to put yourself and your family first and seek a remedy,” Mr Godfrey said.

“A dangerous phone like this is considered to have a major failure under consumer law, which means the consumer decides what remedy – a repair, replacement or refund – is right for them.

“If you have purchased one of these phones outright, your best option is to get an immediate refund from Samsung or

the place of purchase.”

If the phone comes as part of a contract for service with a telco and the service can no longer be provided because the phone is dangerous, there may be rights under the guarantees within consumer law to cancel the service.

Mr Godfrey said it was worth remembering that if you are not satisfied with the remedy offered by a telecommunications company such as Telstra or Optus, you could always escalate the issue to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman.

“Whatever remedy you select, stop using the phone immediately,” he said.

He said the same applied to the Samsung top-loader washing machines.

Fires and incidents related have now topped 297.

“It’s time to seek a manufacturer’s refund,” he said.

“With tens of thousands of these machines still in homes across the country and concerns raised about the adequacy of a repair being offered by Samsung, we encourage anyone with a dodgy Samsung top loader to seek a refund.”

The recalled washing machines were manufactured from 2010 to 2013.

Consumer group Choice says it is time for a national discussion on how to fix clothing sizes in Australia, with dropping a dress size currently as easy as swapping stores.

“Clothing sizes in Australia are all over the shop, with consumers struggling, in the change rooms and online, with inconsistent and confusing labels,” Choice journalist Kate Browne says.

“While this may suit the designers who can manipulate sizing to give an instant ‘feel-good’ factor or deter the ‘wrong’ body shapes, consumers usually have to try a range of sizes to find the right fit.”

National sizing surveys, similar to what is needed in Australia, have been successfully conducted in Japan, UK, US, Spain, France, China and Germany.

TELEFLEX Medical Australia in consultation with the TGA, is recalling a range of its Comfort impregnated cloth topical skin products due to the potential for bacterial contamination.

These washcloths are impregnated with barrier creams and antiseptic agents and are used to protect and clean areas of skin.

The manufacturer found contamination by bacteria, Burkholderia cepacia, in several lots of its Comfort Shield Barrier Cream Cloths.

Although the contamination has not been identified in any other products, all products manufactured on the same production lines in the relevant period have also been recalled.

Applying a product contaminated with B. cepacia to the skin may cause serious infections in patients with weakened immune systems, including those in hospitals, and some other patient groups.

TRUTH IN TEA TREE OIL THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has taken action against the supplier of Bosisto’s tea tree oil, for labelling its tea tree oil as 100 per cent pure when its tests revealed this was not the case. “Consumers must be able to rely on purity or credence claims made on product packaging and labelling when making purchasing decisions, as they are unable to verify the accuracy of these claims themselves,” ACCC Commissioner Sarah Court said. Tea tree oil is an essential oil that is commonly sold through pharmacies and retailers of natural products.

Old Masters and still running strong These are the golden oldies, the group of athletes who are still running – and cycling and swimming – and proving age is no obstacle.

A

mong the competitors lining up for this year’s Noosa Triathlon are those who have long since blown out the 70 candles on their milestone birthday cake, while last month’s Father’s Day IronMan 70.3 world championship also brought its share of old masters to Queensland.

Ann Palmer, who lives at Margate, celebrates her 74th birthday the day after the Noosa triathlon, on October 31. She has already competed 23 times and this year is racing with her son, Sam, 46.

“I’m hoping to finish this year’s race and do at least one more to make it a round 25,” she says.

Ann has a grandson who will be old enough to compete in the triathlon next year and would like to do it with his grandmother, so she plans to keep on trying and training.

Ann, like other Noosa Triathlon veterans, says the event, which this year celebrates its 34th anniversary, has not lost any of the “fun, social vibe” from its early days.

“I love the Noosa Tri; it is definitely more relaxed than some other races,” she says. “You see people competing who have just decided to give it a go. They are

For her first triathlon, Ann did breaststroke and walked/ran and says she still gets a thrill out of finishing a race.

“What’s wonderful for me now, is to see so many older people competing, especially the women,” she says.

Alf Field, 76, has seven Noosa Triathlons under his belt, and agrees that winning is not everything.

A keen runner for 20 years competing in marathons and ultra-marathons, his interest evolved after a knee injury 13 years ago.

First he tried cycling, accompanying a friend on a 460km charity ride from London to Paris, the year he turned 65.

“The excitement and sense of achievement as we rode up the cobblestones to finish at the Arc de Triomphe was incredible,” he says. “I had achieved something which a year before I would have considered to be a totally impossible feat.”

Next came the Noosa Triathlon.

“Among my running friends were a number who regularly did the Noosa Triathlon and it seemed like the highlight of their year as they spent a week in Noosa having fun,” he says.

“I decided to enter for the 2008 event despite the fact I could not run, hadn’t swum for years and would be 68 when I did my first triathlon.

“I could walk around a golf course, so I knew I could walk 10km, and cycling 40km over a largely flat course seemed like a doddle after riding 460km from London to Paris. So, that just left swimming.”

A true Aussie battler, Alf took swimming lessons and, although not a strong swimmer, was able to complete the 1500m swim, resting every 500m.

However, he still chuckles at the memory of his first Noosa Triathlon.

“Before the race, I told Rosanne, my wife and major support group, that I calculated I would come last and she shouldn’t worry if it took a long time for me to finish.

“Sure enough, as I got about 7km into the walk, I could see they were starting to

“Then a motorcycle policeman pulled up next to me and said he was there to ensure I got safely to the finish. We had a nice conversation on the way.

“By now I could hear the loud speaker and they were playing the song I did it My Way, which I thought was very appropriate because that was exactly what I was doing.

“Then the song changed to ‘What’s it all about, Alfie?’ and I wondered what was going on. Rosanne had become concerned they were going to close the finish and went over to check this out with the announcer and told him this was my first triathlon and that I was 68.

“The announcer asked ‘can’t he run?’ to which my wife replied, ‘no he can’t run and he can’t swim either but don’t worry, he has done 110 marathons. He knows how to finish these long distance events!’

“All of this was broadcast on the loudspeaker. The announcer immediately started saying ‘Folks, we’ve got to get this guy home’ and, as I approached the finish, the crowd was chanting ‘C’mon Alfie, C’mon!’ and banging their hands on the advertising hoardings.

“I was in tears as I finished. People wanted to have their photos taken with me. Talk about a huge buzz of satisfaction

Last year, Alf competed in the Noosa Triathlon alongside his two sons, Gregory and Richard, and proudly pocketed a bronze medal in the 75-79 age group.

Although registered for this year’s Noosa Triathlon, life, he says, has set him on a different course.

“Sadly, I will not be participating after all as I have been handed another challenge, not of my choosing this time,” Alf says.

“I have been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer and will be

having an operation to remove the prostate robotically.

“I now have to figure out how I get over this and get fit enough to do Noosa again next year.”

At the Mooloolaba Ironman event was Japan’s Takashi Ohya who discovered a new lease of life, postretirement.

At 73, the former exploration geophysicist has competed in triathlons for just three years.

“I do it for fun, but most importantly to meet young people,” says Takashi.

“When I worked, I was almost the boss and so everyone said ‘Hello Mr Ohya’ and never used my first name. Now I can talk to young people very easily. I can join their party.”

American Steven Bonawitz, 55, a physician, competed with his 23-year-old daughter, Katie.

“My son and daughter inspired me to take up endurance sports,” says Steven, who has finished six 70.3 and three full Ironman events with one or both of his children.

“It started three years ago when they challenged me to do a marathon. A triathlon was next and it’s been non-stop since.

For Steven, entering his first world championship event in Queensland was close to his heart. His mother, Barb, 81, was born in Townsville, moved to

Brisbane to finish high school, then further afield, to America in the 1950s, where she met his father.

The oldest competitor was 80-yearold New Zealander, Garth Barfoot who started competing when he turned 60.

Not even close to retiring as director of New Zealand’s largest privatelyowned, family real estate business, Barfoot & Thompson, in Auckland, he is the first to recommend endurance events to others his age.

“This is because the faculties that deteriorate with age are not an integral part of endurance racing. Success is not dependent on having good eyesight, good hearing, good reaction time and good hand-eye coordination,” he says.

“But, every time I hear the starters’ hooter go off, I feel special ... special in that I am lucky enough to be still competing although I’ve probably extended the range of what can be done on an artificial hip!”

Take to the skies for the flight of a lifetime Ever wondered what it’s like behind the controls of a Boeing 737? BRUCE McMAHON finds it’s a boy’s own adventure for every man’s bucket list.

C

o-pilot Patrick and I sat in the cockpit for some time after landing.

No big rush to meet and greet passengers as folk disembarked, no real need to face a shaken, stirred and seething mob.

That’s because anyone on this particular flight, in and out of Sydney Airport, in a Boeing 737-800 would’ve been mightily distressed by the take-off, the scrape-through under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the little-bitsideways landing. Indeed, without the co-pilot Patrick’s gentle corrections from here to there and back again there’s no guarantee this jet would’ve have made the 30-minute excursion in one piece.

So thank the lords of the skies, thank Sunjet’s Boeing simulator, that no real airline passengers had stomachs turned inside out while I “flew” around the Harbour City for $149.

Ex-Canadian policeman Patrick Hanna has lived and loved in Australia for the past 15 years. He’s been an aviation tragic since he was 15 years old.

After a couple of years in the construction business on the Sunshine Coast he bought a jet aircraft simulator from down south and in April this year

But unlike the $40 million simulators the airlines use, this one doesn’t have full motion simulation.

The world’s 22,000 airports are in the program, most with airport laid out correctly but generic buildings and scenery.

Sunjet has loaded up some 10 airports with the “real” scenery, strips such as Brisbane, Sydney, Dubai and the old, land – the between-the-high-rise, Kai Tak airport in Hong Kong.

The most dramatic, the one that brings on the sweats, is the Paro aiport in Bhutan in the Himalayan shadows of Mount Everest.

Anyway, today’s flight is simple enough – out of Sydney and a loop back, with a pass under the Harbour Bridge.

Climb up into the cockpit and there are two comfortable seats separated by throttle controls and more, a reasonable view to the front and sides plus a myriad of switches.

Patrick reckons there are more than 100, fewer than 1000.

In the captain’s hands is the control column – pull back to go up, push down for down and right or left to steer.

On the dashboard ahead is the primary flight display, telling us the aircraft’s speeds, attitudes and altitudes.

like driving a tractor. There’s weight to turning the aircraft’s column but the Boeing demands some subtle and deft touches; I’m over-steering and overcorrecting the 60-tonne plane all over the tarmac.

A baggage handler and his train of trollies swerves sharply out of the jet’s way. True story. It’s a real virtual experience for me and the airport’s ground staff.

We head down the runway, almost on the centre line marking, throttle up, pull back on the column at 132 knots (about 245km/h) and we’re in blue skies, headed out over the Pacific Ocean.

Best on a clear day, says Patrick, to look out and lock in the spot where the windscreen meets the horizon.

It increases your situational awareness, he says. Otherwise you’ll be chasing instrument needles and always a step behind.

He asks us to bank left and, just short of barrel-rolling the Boeing, I bring the plane back toward the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Warning bells and alarms rend the air as I drop to 100ft, stone-skipping over the water and then under the bridge.

Patrick laughs, says we lost a bit of paint off the roof. I open my eyes again and climb back into the big sky.

Now a turn and a descent for home. I see the runway now and Patrick pauses

the simulator for a briefing on the whys and wherefores of landing.

There’s a bit to consider here, lining up instruments and visuals and meeting glide slopes.

Dropping altitude at 700 feet a minute and Patrick’s telling me to ‘float it’?

Somehow, through a fog of adrenaline, I find the tarmac and the ever-polite co-pilot says “nice”.

Bet he says that to all the customers.

We taxi back to the terminal and, having waited the appropriate time, disembark back on to Brisbane Rd,

Mooloolaba. So what did we learn? Flying a Boeing 737 in the safety of a simulator is one absorbing and life-like experience, surely one for the bucket list.

But come fly with me? No thank you.

Off the top of my head The STML (shot-term memory loss) syndrome strikes again as PETER RICHARDSON heads out to do a spot of shopping.

R

eaders of my last three STML tales will recall the cheery “Good one, Grandpa!” with which my grandson greeted my latest episode.

Well, off the top of my head, as it were, here is the latest and most embarrassing.

Looking forward to a leisurely walk to the village shops, I took my elderly tweed cap from its peg on the door, flicked it on to my head as I had done every winter’s day, and set off.

Halfway down the hill, I was met by a small boy walking well ahead of his mother, or perhaps it was his grandmother. I am hard-pressed these days to tell a yummy mummy from a gorgeous granny.

The little chap gave me a puzzled look, but as Mum (or Grandma) approached she took one look at me and covered her mouth with a hand, presumably to stop laughing in my face.

Thankfully though, she took pity on me and said “I love your two caps”.

Lurking under the tweed was an old baseball-type cap, its brim poking cheekily out alongside that of its tweedy cousin.

Mortified, I shoved it into my ever-so handy manbag (why in the world did we blokes take so long to adopt this wonderful hold-all and/or hide-all?).

Continuing my walk, I pondered the possibility that I might start a new trend.

“Oh no, not another one!” I hear you say. But just as the US baseballers started wearing their caps back-to-front, a style copied by the Beat Generation, the surfies and more recently the “gangsta” kids, I might, through the social (and all too often anti-social) media be able to make the twin peaks look go viral. On reflection though, I think I’ll just switch to a shady old straw hat and leave the caps to fight over their place on the peg.

On assignment and all at sea In her first attempt at prose for the U3A writing group, CAROL BRUNELLO considers whether plain English is plain sailing.

P

lain sailing? I think not, as I seek inspiration from the image of JK Rowling. A fraction of her talent would be most welcome for this, the exercise for my first class.

A blank screen stares at me. Thoughts of short story titles such as “Nautical Nice”, “The Savvy Seafarers of the 1700s” and “The Devils of the Deep” are just words without a future, and the wording for a would-be full length future novel entitled “The Brave Men of the Navy”, has gone – as if snatched from my brain.

So far I have two words, plain sailing, on an otherwise blank page.

My mind wanders as I smile and recall a brighter time of my day.

I did have a lovely walk along the beach this morning until the light rain turned into heavy showers.

This morning, a long way from my car and with no shelter to be seen I was beginning to feel wet socks through my waterproof sneakers.

I had to ask myself “What on earth are you doing here?” Well, I was looking for inspiration, for some words for my article. As a lover of the sea, I thought it would be the one place where the power of that huge saline mass would surge into my mind!

I was wet and cold. I changed tack and headed home.Tacking. There is a word which is an enigma in our language.

I had always thought it was something my mother did when she was sewing our clothes. That was until my father decided that as a bonding exercise we must all join the local sailing club.

I was a poor pupil. I never could understand how tacking could be related to yachting. I do remember that tacking is something to do with going from one point to another in a zigzag pattern.

I was not the family member who continued to sail in adulthood but rather, I was the one who liked to write.

I am writing for my U3A writing

group about Plain Sailing, a title that is part of the well-remembered first high school textbook related to the study of the English language: English Our Way is Plain Sailing. What a misnomer that turned out to be.

These days we are encouraged to write everything in plain English. There is even the Plain English campaign and councils and companies receive awards for pamphlets, instructions and contracts if the English is plain enough.

It avoids jargon, has no gobbledygook and is not long-winded or confusing.

Documents are even given the Crystal Mark if they have been approved by the Plain English campaigners.

What a shame many legal beagles (whoops, jargon there), insurance companies, government offices, and other organisations have not partaken in this effective and preferred manner of communication.

We all know our language is, and always has been, one of the most difficult, inexplicable languages in the world, yet our vocabulary has become more extensive. Recent times have given us an abundance of colloquial speech where expressions roll from tongues and are heard almost everywhere one goes.

None are clear, none are grammatically correct, our grandparents never used them but we are slowly learning them. Our youth are the experts and I dread to think of just how heavy our dictionaries will be in 50 years time!

Back to my first school text book of English. Published in 1950, the title was confusing in its own right. To my knowledge the English language was never plain sailing.

Is that one book and its oxymoron of a title, the cause of the present day confusion? I know I’m confused - as!

So far, I find that writing for my new group is just plain sailing really, a no brainer; easy peasy; hunky dory; piece of cake; sweet as. Hope they like it; am sure she’ll be right; no worries; whatever … a breeze really.

No, that cannot be. A breeze is something to do with wind, which is to related to tacking which is related to sewing – oh, I’m confused.

Know your probiotics We all know we need probiotics at some stage after antibiotics but, TRUDY KITHER writes, do you know why – and if you are taking the right one

OST people walk into their chemist or health food store and grab a bottle out of the fridge, expecting that this will most likely fix their problem.

But do you know what strain you’re taking? Did you know that not all strains of probiotics treat the same issues?

Rather, different strains apply to different situations.

Here, as a general guide only, why you need probiotics and what strain you should consider.

When you hear the word “gut instinct” you assume it’s just a saying but in fact, 71 per cent of your brain’s serotonin levels are created in your gut.

So, to keep your moods and mental ability healthy, you need to nourish your gut with good probiotics.

he hype surrounding the Frida Kahlo Exhibition at the Art Gallery Sydney this year has injected a Frida-esque trend in art, fashion garments and colourful souvenirs.

In fact, the Sydney Gallery has extended the exhibition by popular demand to late this month, and tickets are already sold out.

While this is an exhibition of an important 20th century artist, many authors and museum directors such as Christian Gether describe her as “the greatest and most famous female artist who, by using herself in a new and uncompromising way, has been an inspiration to women all over the world”.

Frida’s distinctive eyebrows, her downy upper lip, her dresses, her hairstyles and her choice of jewellery have all cemented her place in the art world as well as her place and sense of style in the fashion world.

For those of us navigating the minefield that sometimes fashion and style can become, this is a great reminder that a waxed, “cosmetic-polished” and fashion-trend body does not only define us. Frida’s uncompromising way and her connection to her local traditional dress has again made her a style icon in today’s

Having recently returned from Oaxaca, the Mexican village where Frida mainly sourced her garments during the 1930s, it became apparent the traditional style is still part of the local women’s everyday-wear. Their appreciation of traditional crafts and outfits is infectious.

Daily, there’s a local festival or parade where traditional outfits are worn and all generations participate in a flurry of music, colour and dancing.

The costumes are worn by young and old, with a focus on local, hand-made, traditional smocks and skirts.

Their skills in embroidery, cut-work, crochet and weaving have become a family affair with profits going directly to their families and villages.

Unfortunately, this is a craft and culture that is at risk. Around the world indigenous cultures are under pressure from modernisation and globalisation.

Many of the local villages are being decimated as younger generations move to the big cities of Mexico and the US. This is a declining craft.

For those of us who appreciate this

hand-made and artisanal needlework there is still time to become part of the movement to save these traditional skills.

Many of the styles are also perfect for an Australian, coastal, sub-tropical lifestyle and more mature figures that want to minimise lumps and bumps.

Perhaps Frida had it right.

Her Mexican costumes and Indian rebozos were comfortable to wear, particularly for a woman who after an horrific accident had to wear a plaster or steel corset, often sat in a wheelchair, and perhaps wanted to disguise her disability.

What’s with all this Latin?

The old language is very much alive in the 21st century but, writes DAVID PARMITER, many don’t even realise they are using it.

“I

love your column”, she said, “but what’s with all this Latin? It’s a dead language, eh?”

“Pace magister” I replied.

Pronounced “parchay maggistair” it means “I’m sorry, teacher” in schoolboy Latin.

You say a lot of that in Year 7 at an English boys’ boarding school.

I had to remind her, however, that Latin is not a dead language.

In fact, modern English is a mix of Iron Age Celtic, classical Latin, 9th century Anglo-Saxon, Viking Old Norse, Norman French, Medieval Latin (again) and Renaissance French, Italian and Spanish (16th century).

The 16th Century was the Elizabethan Age, which introduced words from the Americas (such as potato, tea and tobacco) and later the East India Company, which introduced coffee and opium and spices from China and the Far East.

Before 1600, nobody in England took tea or coffee, or smoked tobacco.

But while our vocabulary has been enriched with new words from the far-flung Empire, our grammar is basically rooted in Latin, French and

German. We have had to teach our children nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions for starters, and then how to assemble them into phrases.

Then we progressed to sentences: phrases joined with a verb to make subject and predicate.

Today’s kids are taught gender equity, workplace health and safety, risk awareness and other nanny-state rules and regulations that prepare them for the procedures and protocols required in the workplace.

That is, if they are lucky enough to find a job.

This consists mainly of filling in endless forms and performing periodic assessments that have nothing to do with actually doing the job.

It enables middle managers to fill in the Key Performance Indicators so they can earn their performance bonuses for not doing anything.

They then have to be appraised in how to write documents in bureaucratspeak; which will require a certain command of Latin.

To turn common English words into Latinate polysyllabic convoluted verbiage

that “fits the model” as per the prescribed protocol, that is unlearn basic grammar.

Never use subject-verb-object when the passive voice and an entire paragraph will cloud what a simple sentence could have said.

But they most probably will not have been taught basic grammar so they will

It’s “she learned” not “she has learnt” (that’s the past participle).

An adjective qualifies a noun and an adverb modifies a verb.

In French, the word “proper” means your own as in English – “proper” is the adjective and the adverb is “properly”.

Watch your proper language and

speak properly. So let’s give the young people some words. First, learn some Latin prefixes, the bits that are put at the front.

For example “dif” and you can only be dif- from something as in different from, not different to.

Now “com” and that means “with” so you can only compare with something not to it. Com-municate means in Latin “with the mouth”, that is, to speak with another person.

Strange we now so often communicate by email or text.

Latin is the language of the living not the inanimate screen. And that’s another one, in-animate. Not living.

Let’s move on to “pre”, Latin for “before” – nuptials, conception or birth but pre-conception can also mean the “think-before-it-happens” moment.

You can have a pre-conception that something will be a nightmare, but it turns out to be wonderful.

You can get dis-affected teens excited about Rome, fights in the Colosseum and tales of the Latin classics if you introduce them to the language of the Romans.

Amo, amas, amat. I love it, you love it, he/she loves it.

Hay there, we’re here to help As western farmers battle with drought, people of the southeast have rallied and are ready to “bale” them out, writes es ANGELA BENSTED.

P

eople lucky enough to live in southeast Queensland have many elegant clubs and restaurants to choose from, venues serving top nosh with a side of sensational views.

Winding down after a busy day or an even busier career, locals could be forgiven for simply taking it easy, drink in hand, turning their backs to the country’s parched interior as they enjoy the city life.

Instead, community groups are getting behind Rural Aid Australia’s Buy a Bale campaign, raising money to buy fodder for Queensland’s struggling farmers.

Spearheading the effort is the Caloundra Power Boat Club on the Sunshine Coast and general manager Kevin Deguara is optimistic about achieving a target of 15 trucks.

“You hear so much about raising money for overseas but our farmers are struggling here,” he says.

The idea behind the hay

deliveries is to keep the breeding stock alive so when things do pick up the farmers have something to go on with.

Once their breeding stock goes, it’s very hard for farming families to get back on their feet.

The fundraising will culminate in a carnival-like send off for a convoy laden with hay on Sunday, November 27.

Kevin won’t know the final destination until just before the convoy departs, once Rural Aid Australia has determined the neediest areas through its local

advisers network. That organisation will also buy the feed and arrange the transport.

CEO Charles Alder says they try to make a bit of an event at the other end.

“It gives us an opportunity to bring together the farmers who at the height of the drought were just sitting on their properties,” he says.

“They were pretty stressed and couldn’t afford the fuel to get off the properties in some cases.”

There has been some rain in

the west recently, so much so the Birdsville annual racing carnival was limited to a one-day event in August after the track was flooded.

Despite the relief in some parts of the state, 35 councils and four part council areas remain drought declared, with a further 82 individual drought declared properties in other parts.

Charles says that even with rain, there are a lot of farmers who don’t have the cashflow to feed the animals they have to keep them alive.

“It’s as much a financial drought as it is a physical one,” he says.

Let’s have a chat about a very important topic for women - breast cancer screening. In my work at the BreastScreen Queensland Brisbane Northside Service I talk to many women about breast cancer and having a breastscreen. Here are some of the frequently asked questions:

A breastscreen (sometimes called a mammogram) is a special x-ray of the breast to look for the signs of early breast cancer. A breastscreen is the most effective way of detecting breast cancers early, well before they can be seen or felt by a woman or her doctor. Finding breast cancer at an early stage could save a woman’s life.

What if I’m under 40?

There is no current evidence that screening mammography is effective in detecting early stages of breast cancer in women under 40 years of age. Women under forty should be ‘breast aware’ and any changes should be discussed with their doctor.

Who can have a breastscreen?

We provide free breast cancer screening for women aged 50 - 74 years, as this is the age group where the benefits of breast cancer screening have been most clearly demonstrated. Women from the age of 40 are also eligible for a free breastscreen.

Having a breastscreen only takes 30 minutes and it is recommended every two

Honda’s Civic duty takes it into the future Honda’s newest Civic is a bold machine, writes BRUCE McMAHON, and its sharp bodylines are a long way from last century’s cuddlesome cars.

T

his time around the Civic is all about tomorrow.

Inside and out it’s an all-new, all-important car for the Japanese maker with fresh angles to style, and fresh approaches to engineering and cabin ergonomics.

Honda had dropped off the pace, hamstrung perhaps by GFC woes. There wasn’t much excitement and vehicles such as that first version of the current CR-V wagon were underwhelming.

That SUV has since been tidied across a couple of departments and its sibling the HR-V is a decent machine; waiting in the wings to underscore Honda’s rediscovered elan is the NSX supercar.

For now, and for most, it’s the Civic which carries the Honda flag.

It’s a better car than before and is now a decent challenger to the likes of Mazda’s 3 Series.

Those intriguing looks of the

Honda sedan – there’s a hatchback to come – are carried through to the cabin. Fit and finish here are excellent for this class and price – from $22,390.

The instrument panel boasts digital speed readout encircled by tachometer and thin lines of blue and green lights. It may be a bit disco for some tastes.

The Honda’s steering wheel

carries a clutch of switches with six small controls in one left-hand cluster for phone and infotainment. It’s no place for butter fingers. The cruise control switch sits lonely on the right-hand spoke of the wheel.

A tidy dashboard scores a well-integrated seven-inch display screen for controls for stereo, Bluetooth and all.

Explore a new standard in over-50s resort style living

A touch different is a screen display from a camera looking back from the exterior mirror when the left-hand indicator is used. It eliminates any blind spots there.

The Civic’s seats are great up front and there’s a decent amount of room in the back seat and boot (with space saver tyre).

Press the start button on the 1.8 litre versions and there’s 104kW waiting up front. It uses a Constantly Variable Transmission to get that power and 174Nm to the front wheels.

This is a willing and wellmatched pairing with smart responses though full acceleration introduces some transmission drone. Likewise if moving the gear lever back to S for sport.

Here some “steps” in the $24,490 VTi-S model’s CVT might be appreciated but the combination is lively enough and fuel consumption around town should be about 8 litres per 100km.

To score paddle shifters Honda buyers need to move to turbocharged 1.5 litre Civics with 127kW and 220Nm, starting at $27,790 for a VTi-L. There’s more spirit here and those gear shifters behind the steering wheel are most welcome.

But left to settle into a relaxed pace there’s a calmness from inside all these new Civics, quieter than most class rivals.

It’s that composed ride and handling plus excellent steering, which mark this as a Honda that’s moving back to better build and engineering standards.

It feels solid on the road and the steering is as sharp as to be found in these, and some more sporting, parts of the market.

There is driving joy in swinging a Honda Civic through a series of bends with quick and unflustered responses from the front end.

That’s what Hondas should be about.

It’s your legacy so be sure to get it right Charitable bequests are a meaningful way to make a contribution to society after you have died but, writes KATIE WORSNOP, it’s important to make your intentions very clear.

O

ne of the most important considerations when making a bequest is to ensure that you get the description of the charity correct and that any conditions attached to the bequest are able to be implemented on a practical level.

The incorrect identification of a charity in a will can include things such as using the wrong name, misspelling the name or using an incorrect address.

Often the executor named in the will is required to file an application in the Court to allow them to effect the gift to the charity causing additional expense to the estate.

An example of this occurred when seven of 12 charities were misdescribed in a will (Kuskopf v Sippy Creek Animal Refuge

Society Inc & Anor) and the executor had to bring an application to correctly identify the charities to enable the distribution.

It is important when leaving a gift to a charity that you do your homework on the correct name by which the charity is registered.

This may involve personally contacting the charity to obtain the exact wording required when making a bequest.

Often charitable organisations will include on their website the appropriate clauses that you can add to your will.

Sometimes charities change their name or purpose over time, or merge with other charities, so think about what should happen if the charity no longer exists when your executor is dealing with your estate.

Perhaps you should consider leaving instructions to direct the

funds elsewhere if the organisation no longer exists or no longer works in the area you wanted to support.

You may also wish to be specific as to how you want the funds to be applied to a project undertaken by the charity.

You can define, for example, that the bequest be used to fund a scholarship, or be directed at the organisation’s efforts to reduce homelessness, to research a cure for a certain health condition, or to raise awareness on a subject with which you have a connection.

But don’t be so specific that the organisation can’t effect the gift. For example don’t make a bequest that must be used by the organisation to build housing for domestic violence victims in a particular postcode to an organisation that doesn’t provide refuge or housing services, or doesn’t provide such services in the location you have specified.

The unreported judgment of Bryan v Oxfam Australia (BS 6762/15) considered whether gifts to Oxfam Australia “for the purposes of [various educational activities in developing countries]” were absolute gifts, conditional gifts, or charitable trusts for the specified purpose.

Oxfam could no longer fulfil the specified purposes, as the particular projects had either already been wound up or were being wound up by the time of the testator’s death.

It was held that no trust was created, but that the gifts were conditional gifts. As a consequence, because Oxfam couldn’t fulfil the condition, the gifts failed and fell into the estate’s residue.

Luckily, Oxfam was also the residuary beneficiary of the will.

If there is not sufficient certainty as to the intention expressed by the individual in their will about the purpose of

the bequest, the AttorneyGeneral or the Court may be asked to direct that the gift given in the will be administered via a cy pres scheme, in other words as close to the original intention expressed by the individual in the charitable bequest.

This illustrates the dangers of incorrectly identifying a charity in a will and placing impractical conditions on the charitable bequest.

Unnecessary court costs can be incurred by an individual’s estate in fixing these problems.

Care must be taken to ensure that problems are avoided in drafting the will otherwise, despite having the very best of intentions, your charitable bequest can be held to be unenforceable.

Don’t let updates get you down You may be annoyed by always being asked to update your software but the iPad man COLIN DUNKERLEY says it’s essential for functionality and security

ost people do not need to use the latest and greatest features, (although many of these features make using your iPad easier) but you all need to keep the security of your devices up to date.

For that reason alone it is recommended that you do updates whenever prompted by your device.

While some people complain about how many updates they are asked to do others, who own non-Apple products, complain that they cannot do any updates.

As of September 2016, 49 per cent of Android smartphone and tablet users were running software that is three to four years old and can never be updated leaving them vulnerable to viruses and malware.

It’s something the retailers seldom mention at the time of purchase, leaving most Android customers totally unaware of how vulnerable their products actually are.

Keeping your software up to date is the easiest way to maintain the best security on your device so please make sure you don’t ignore them.

Each September Apple does a large

software update to the operating system of the iPhone and iPad. This continual evolution will never stop so you need to continually embrace the updates. And why wouldn’t you, as they are provided free!

This year’s update, iOS10 has some fantastic new improvements that will make using your devices even easier.

One great new feature allows you to simply say to your iPhone “I would like a lift to …” and the nearest Uber will be booked, usually arriving within minutes.

Photos has also had a major overhaul giving an incredible new search functionality that allows you to find the things by names, places or things like “dog,” “cat,” “flower” or “car.”

We do recommend this update but as always, before you do make sure you backup your device.

f you would like to find out if the NBN is available to you, your first port of call is the internet. Go to nbnco.com. au/connect-home-or-business/checkyour-address.html and check to see if it’s available in your area yet. If it isn’t, you can register to be told when it is.

If it is available in your area, before you sign up, be aware of the type of service you are signing up for because the majority of connections include the changeover of your home phone line as well as your internet service.

This means that your phone will be connected to your modem along with your computer and this is quite inconvenient for those who have more than two phones in the house.

There are NBN install technicians who can rewire your home so you can get more phone connections through the service but it comes at a steep price.

If you have a back to base security alarm or a health monitor alarm, first talk to these service providers to see if they are NBN compatible.

When comparing ISP plans, check to see if there are any hidden costs involved.

For example, do they offer an NBN compatible modem in the monthly fee or is that extra? What third party modems

do they support? Do they need to install wireless NBN and if so, is that an extra charge? If you are expecting a smooth transition from your ADSL service to the NBN, be ready for delays. Some clients have spent up to nine days without phone or internet.

There are areas where the NBN speed has not improved from good ADSL or even mobile 4G speeds. If you’re expecting lightning speed, you may be disappointed. By now you’re probably asking yourself why bother changing.

Well, everyone is going to have to eventually as the fiber and wireless network replaces the copper network.

Teething problems will be overcome in time. If you are happy with your current plan and they are not planning to turn off the existing network in your area in the near future, it may be best to hold out.

Many shudder at the thought of dealing with telecommunications companies. I have heard horror stories of being on the phone for hours and even days trying to get problems sorted.

Watering wisely or killing with kindness?

You might think you are being a responsible gardener but GARDENEZI reports that many people water their gardens too much.

W

e’re so afraid our plants will die of thirst that we pamper them with water, often instead of instituting a good regime.

Yet water, one of the planet’s most precious resources, is also expensive and so in this usually dry period of the year, with summer approaching, learn to use water wisely rather than wantonly in your garden.

Here’s some ideas to consider: • Improve your soil.

A bit of effort now will reap dividends later. Buy in good soil if you don’t have it, add sand and gypsum to clay soil, add mushroom compost or similar to sand.

A rich, loamy soil retains water well – but

our local soils need a lot of improvement.

Water will just run off clay or rocky soil and be wasted; sandy soils will absorb large amounts of moisture and dry out fast.

• Mulch, mulch and mulch again – the slowest but most effective way to get water-retentive soil.

• Water in the morning. Most plants don’t take up water at night so precious moisture is lost by night watering. Early in the morning is the best time, before the powerful Queensland sun soaks up all moisture before the plants can make use of it. Plants of tropical origin – for example those in a Balinese-style garden – are the exception and are best watered

in the evening or at night. Such plants do better with misting than heavy root watering and misting uses less water.

• Automated systems are a good thing but need regular maintenance to see that jets are not blocked and that nozzles/drippers are reaching the plant root zones. They should not be used when you are away for any length of time – unless supervised by a helpful neighbour.

• A good watering twice a week is usually enough for any garden, except in very hot, windy weather.

• Larger pots retain water more effectively than smaller; always use a high-quality, water-retentive mix and change or top up annually.

Mulching improves soil to retain precious moisture and cut down on watering.

GENERATION LOST TO JOYS OF THE GARDEN Britain’s Royal Horticultural Society has accused the Baby Boomers of losing a generation of gardeners because they failed to teach their children about growing flowers and vegetables.

The RHS, the organisation behind the famous Chelsea Flower Show, says those aged 25 to 40 are less likely to be gardeners Society director-general Sue Biggs said

this was because their parents treated outdoor areas “like extensions of their living rooms” with paving, barbecues and tables and chairs rather than plants.

“For a lot of them, their parents just didn’t teach them gardening and we lost a lot of the skills,” she said.

“That’s also the generation where for most families both the mother and the father went to work.

“When I grew up my mum taught me how to garden.

She didn’t go out to work so she had time to teach it.”

A 2011 RHS survey of 500 people representing three generations found fewer than 1 per cent of parents were taught to garden while at school, compared with 55 per cent of grandparents and 40 per cent of children.

Avoid the pain and make decluttering a way of life Spring is a season for transition so, writes KAREN HEALY, it’s little wonder that it has become associated with cleaning out.

C

an you feel it? I can. Change is in the air. The birds chirp earlier, day breaks through the curtains and heavy winter clothing is packed away.

With spring comes the transition between seasons, moving from dark, chill seclusion to bright and active.

It’s my favourite time of year when new buds begin blooming.

With the change in temperature comes a heightened buzz as we start getting mobile and think about becoming more energetic. It’s easy to hide behind closed doors during winter but there’s less activity in the household. We’re less likely to open cupboards and get organised, let alone go through the arduous task of decluttering.

So, spring is the perfect time to throw open the cupboard and wardrobe doors with wild abandon. Let the fresh air and daylight into areas that have been neglected for months.

Open those cupboards and what do you see?

Are you actually “seeing” what’s in there, or are you only seeing what you want to see?

There is a big difference. If you’re the latter, then you’re in denial and have your goggles on. Take them off and let’s be honest.

Whoa! What’s that you say? Where did all that stuff come from?

I’ll give you a clue.

There’s no denying as a population we’re avid consumers. On the whole we accumulate more every day. Just look at what goes into our shopping trolley.

Every time we shop, we bring home a few bags of groceries packed in plastic shopping bags.

This accumulation isn’t confined to groceries. It includes mail, clothing, newspapers, notes from school, business cards, plastic containers, etc.

The list goes on, and on … and on.

Now think about what goes OUT of the house.

Sure, we have refuse or waste as a result of food preparation and put some items in the recycling bin but generally we never discard/donate or throw out as much as we accumulate.

It doesn’t take a genius or mathematician to work out what’s wrong with his equation.

By magic, the incremental albeit small increases which occur on a daily basis suddenly blow out of proportion. Before you know it, whammo! You’ve got more stuff than you can ever fully use (or need) in a lifetime.

The solution and the only way to keep on top of the growing mass is to declutter regularly, not just when you’re thinking about moving or when you’re planning to put the house on the market.

Or not just because you have guests coming to stay – but regularly.

When we regularly declutter, we keep on top of a hard task.

Let’s admit it, it is hard and it’s not necessarily fun. Regular decluttering means things don’t get out of hand.

Surprisingly, we actually save time and money because we can find the things we need and we don’t have to search for those items.

It’s simple really.

Have you heard of the Pareto principle, also called the 80:20 rule?

We can apply the same principle to our homes. We use only 20 per cent of the stuff in our homes, and 80 per cent can be purchased within a 20km radius for less than 20 dollars.

That’s amazing when you think about how we let stuff consume our lives.

Regular decluttering saves time, money and stress.

Here are my top five tips to help you live an uncluttered life.

1. Make a commitment to incorporate decluttering as part of your household management.

2. Assign significant events for decluttering, for example Christmas and once for every birthday in your household. If you have two people living in the house, there’s twice plus Christmas which equals three times a year.

3. Fish everything, and I mean everything, out of the cupboard/wardrobe or area you have decided to work on. It’s surprising what is hidden at the back of cupboards. Out of sight is out of mind.

4. Ask what purpose does the item serve.

If it’s not used/loved or needed, why keep it?

5. Find a charity to donate all your good but un-needed items.

In 2013, Shelagh Brennand was a busy wife and mum, working as a private investigator, her retirement job after 25 years as a police officer in the UK. Her life changed when she suffered a stroke and she was lucky to be left with only daily fatigue after the initial problems of loss of speech, and loss of feeling in her right side. Post-stroke, she discovered her brain had changed.

“It seemed to function well in rhyme and most of my thoughts could not be processed unless the end of each sentence rhymed,” she says. “I began to write down my thoughts and emotions in the form of poetry and soon learnt these feelings were shared by many stroke survivors.”

Keep abreast of prosthetics Most women have been touched in some way by breast cancer, either directly or through a family member or friend and now one woman is hoping to remove the added trauma of sourcing and fitting a prosthetic breast.

Tracey Grills has run a mobile breast and lingerie-fitting service for the past four years, regularly visiting Brisbane, Toowoomba, Sunshine Coast and its surrounds to provide her unique free home service.

Dementia is not an inevitable part of ageing, writes KAY STROUD An alarming number of Australians are being diagnosed with dementia, sparking calls for the federal government to devote more funds to addressing the looming aged care issue.

But Queensland Brain Institute director Perry Bartlett says that seniors might be able to not only slow the effects of cognitive decline, but actually reverse it. While reporting on new clinical studies Prof Bartlett said it is not inevitable that the brain begins that gradual decline.

“As opposed to what we thought 10 years ago, the brain actually continues to make new brain cells throughout life,” he said.

Bartlett’s support for the benefits of brain exercises goes hand in hand with another field of clinical research that is motivating a change of thought about ageing – research into the profound

effects of spirituality on health. Spiritual behaviours include gratitude, forgiveness, kindness, mindfulness, hope and prayer. Spirituality is fast becoming the new frontier to be understood and applied to healthcare.

Medical and nursing training institutions are including spirituality in their courses and GPs are now encouraged to talk about spiritual things with their patients.

Naming rights

FOUR YEARS AND A PLACE IN HISTORY

C

aptain Patrick Logan, the commandant of the Moreton Bay settlement, certainly left his mark – or at least his name – on Queensland.

A keen explorer, he ventured around southeast Queensland, discovering the southern entrance to Moreton Bay, which we know as the Gold Coast Broadwater, the upper reaches of the Brisbane River and areas now known as Esk, Lamington and Mount Barney National Parks, and the Bremer River where Ipswich was built.

He named the McPherson and Birnam Ranges and Wilsons Peak.

Logan then, was the clear choice when the Department of Local Government decided it was time to form a separate shire council in the booming area between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, bordering on what is now the Scenic Rim, Ipswich and Redland.

It would include the northern suburbs of Albert and Beaudesert Shires and a section of the old Tingalpa Shire in the north.

On May 31, 1978 Local Government Minister Russ Hinze introduced the Local Government (Adjustment of Boundaries) Bill.

It was officially approved on June 8.

At the time, there were 69,000 people

Official opening of the admin building 1981. living north of the Logan River but within three years, it had grown into a city, declared on January 1, 1981.

Logan City has 64 suburbs, many of them also a nod to Patrick Logan – Loganlea, Logan Village, Loganholme, Logan Reserve and Logan Central.

Then of course, there’s the Logan River, Logan Motorway and Logan Road, which connects Logan City with Brisbane.

Logan City also takes in Beenleigh, Woodridge, Eagleby, Rochedale South, Browns Plains, Shailer Park, Meadowbroook, and the country town Jimboomba.

It has huge multi-cultural diversity, with about 25 per cent of residents born overseas.

HATED by the convicts in his charge for his cruelty, Captain Patrick Logan in reality achieved a great deal during his four years as commandant and is considered by some to be the founder of Queensland.

He was born in Scotland in 1791 and before his 20th birthday had joined the 57th Foot Regiment and fought in the Napoleonic Wars in Spain and France.

Peace came and he planned to become a farmer in Ireland but the life didn’t suit him and he returned to his regiment in 1819.

They were posted to New South Wales and he arrived in Sydney in April 1825 to guard prisoners.

Seven months later the Governor - another Scotsman - Thomas Brisbane, put him in charge of the convict settlement at Moreton Bay. Logan arrived in March 1826 and set about creating order in the settlement, his strict discipline and program of punishments winning him no friends among the convicts.

It was reported that the Moreton Bay convicts “manifested insane joy” when they heard news of his death.

In the long poem A Convict’s Tour to Hell, written in 1839 by the convict Frances MacNamara, Captain Logan is depicted as suffering in hell.

The folk song Moreton Bay also

represents Logan as a bloody tyrant: “Captain Logan, he had us mangled, on the triangles of Moreton Bay”.

Logan died in October 1830, while exploring the headwaters of the Brisbane River. He was with his manservant and three convicts.

Several times they had been confronted by large, armed groups of Aborigines who warned them to head back across the river.

“Convicts ‘manifested insane joy’ when they heard of his death.”

He disappeared on the return journey.

He often rode ahead of the group and they eventually found his saddle, his dead horse in a stream bed and his body in a shallow grave.

It appeared the horse had failed to leap over the creek and his death was accidental, although this has never been confirmed.

He may have been killed by Aborigines protecting their land or by convicts who had escaped to the bush and seized the opportunity to dispose of the despised commander.

Logan was buried in the Protestant burial ground in Surry Hills, Sydney.

WHAT PEAK IS THAT? CAPTAIN Logan with explorer Alan Cunningham and the botanist Charles Fraser set out to climb what they thought was Mount Warning, which had been named by Captain Cook in 1770, in 1827.

It was a dangerous and difficult climb but Logan pushed on after the others gave up and reached the summit from where he was able to see the real Mount Warning.

He called the peak he had scaled Mt Hooker but his map was lost and it became Mt Barney. He and Cunningham decided to call it the McPherson Range.

THE ULTIMATE TRIBUTE TO

Berrinba wetlands reserve THE City of Logan has preserved a rich landscape of natural bushland and it’s some of the most accessible in southeast Queensland.

One of the most popular – and newest – attractions is the Berrinba wetlands reserve.

It has 7km of shared walk and bicycle tracks meandering through the wetlands and bushland and passing over five bridges.

There are picnic areas, playgrounds and an interactive information environmental education centre.

Daisy Hill Conservation Park and surrounding areas protect vital koala habitat, one of the last relatively intact natural habitats between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Home to the Daisy Hill Koala Centre, it has forests filled with wildlife within its 435ha.

It joins the Neville Lawrie Reserve, Ford Conservation Area and Kimberley Forest Park which form part of the Koala Bushland Coordinated Conservation Area.

There are mountain biking trails and self-guided walking tracks, such as the Tree discovery trail.

Five walking tracks radiate from the picnic areas, ranging from the 450m

Paperbark trail to the 9km Buhot Creek circuit.

Daisy Hill Koala Centre has free admission and is a great source of information about the Australian icon.

In the east, is the 184ha Cornubia Forest Park, home to koalas, bandicoots, water dragons, wallabies and a large variety of birds.

Also in the east, is the Springwood Conservation Park, with its open eucalypt forest, gorge, cliffs and unique rock formations.

The Eagleby Wetlands is popular among birdwatchers with more than 200 species recorded here and there are plenty of spots to set up the binoculars.

The Logan habitat also helps sustain a number of threatened, vulnerable and endangered species, including the Richmond birdwing butterly, Wallum froglet, glossy black cockatoo, powerful owl and spotted-tailed quail.

Even the forest itself has rare and endangered flora, such as the anglestemmed myrtle and small-leaved tamarind.

Logan City may have its busy urban centres, but this is balanced with walking and cycle trails, boardwalks, barbecue facilities and shelters in the bush, so near and yet so far from the city streets.

Make a health check on your emotions Constant access to images of the success and happiness of others can set us up for emotional distress if we find our lives fall short, writes KYLIE LAYTON.

H

ave you ever heard anyone say “everyone else seems to be able to cope, why can’t I?” It is a question repeatedly asked as people struggle with the emotional distress that life brings and comparison with the perception of the lives of others.

Emotional distress is, in fact, a part of everyday life, and is usually the result of a difference between what we want or expect and what we’ve got.

When we encounter these differences, emotions naturally arise and, the more our reality differs from our expectation, the more intense the emotional experience.

Our quest for happiness and success, coupled with availability of other lives for comparison in the media and social media, will continually produce this unpleasant emotional experience.

So how can we improve our ability to navigate unpleasant emotional experiences?

Acknowledge emotional experience. Without a conscious awareness of our emotional experience we tend to act on autopilot and unconsciously choose familiar actions to allow us to move through or avoid our emotional experience. If these behaviours are unhelpful this process is likely to lead to further distress.

By acknowledging our emotion we take the first step to creating the space we need to choose how we would like to respond.

Understand what the emotion is telling us. Our emotions are our instincts and our insight into our needs, desires and values. Emotions provide information about the situation and direct our behaviour in the future. Guilt, for instance, is the emotion we feel when our actions are different to how we feel we should have behaved.

By understanding that this is what we are feeling we can recognise a need to behave

Validate our emotional experience. By reminding ourselves that this is what human beings feel when faced with this difference in expectation and reality, that this feeling is here because there are things that matter to us, and that this feeling is here to help us navigate life, we provide ourselves with permission to have this feeling as well as acknowledge that life can be painful.

Allow our emotion. Because of the unpleasant nature of emotional distress we often we have a desire to get rid of the emotion we are experiencing; it’s unpleasant and we don’t want to feel it, so we try to do things that get rid of it.

Sometimes this works but often it makes things worse by increasing our distress. Research indicates that emotions tend to come and go like waves, if we resist the urge to avoid them or fight with them, and try to give

them a space to be, then they will run their course naturally.

Choose how to respond. By acknowledging, understanding and validating our emotion we create the ability to consciously make a choice about how to deal with our emotion.

We can consider what the ideal outcome is in the circumstances; think about our values, what we stand for as a person, and aim to make a choice that is in line with the life we are wanting to live.

This is still possible to do even while we are experiencing emotional distress.

If we can learn to view ALL emotions as a normal part of life and recognise that life is going to be messy, painful, and disappointing at times then our expectations are likely to be more in line with reality and thereby produce less distress.

Keeping your brain in order Brain training is often touted as a way to stave off dementia but before you start, writes MICHELLE LOCH, you need to understand what it’s all about.

W

henever I talk to someone about the idea of being brain fit, or focusing on having a healthy brain, the conversation inevitably lead to questions about whether brain training can prevent dementia, or the onset of Alzheimers Disease (AD).

So let’s deal with that up front. Firstly, dementia and AD are not the same thing.

You can have a form of dementia that is completely unrelated to AD. Your risk of developing either of them increases as you age but it is not considered “normal” to develop these conditions.

Dementia is not a disease. It is a group of symptoms that affect mental tasks such as memory and reasoning and can be caused by a variety of conditions, a major one of which is AD which account for 50-70 per cent of all cases.

Parkinson’s Disease,

Huntington’s Disease, drug use, stroke and depression are also causes of dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease of the brain that slowly impairs memory and cognitive function. The exact cause is unknown and there is no known cure.

Early symptoms of dementia can be mild and easily overlooked, such as episodes of forgetfulness, having trouble keeping track of time and a tendency to lose your way in familiar settings.

Obvious signs of advancing

dementia include forgetfulness and confusion, difficulty in recalling names and faces, repetitious questioning and poor decision-making.

And of course, advanced stages of dementia can be totally debilitating.

So can we reduce our risk of Alzheimer’s and hence risk of dementia?

There are now many studies that indicate that proactively “exercising” the brain – keeping it active in specific ways – significantly lowers the risk of developing AD.

A 2012 study from Berkeley, California found that greater participation in cognitively stimulating activities across the lifespan, but particularly in early and middle life, was associated with reduced risk of AD. In other words, you should start deliberately exercising your brain as early as you can.

In an earlier study, researchers found that even a small increase in cognitive activity was associated with a 33 per cent reduced risk. It’s worth the effort.

Let’s be clear. There is no absolute proof that working to be brain fit will prevent dementia, but there are many, many studies now that are consistently pointing in that direction, and that’s enough for me.

So a great suggestion is to start some basic brain training.

There are plenty of online brain game sites you can access or sign up for.

If you are not into brain training, at least make a conscious effort to use your brain in different ways when you can.

Learn something new, take up a musical instrument or learn to play chess.

Do something that will require the creation of totally new neuronal pathways as this process seems to encourage brain health in much the same way that exercising benefits heart health.

Even taking a different route to work or reversing the hand you use to brush your teeth will create new pathways.

Whatever your age or health status, start to do something “deliberate” to keep your brain active and healthy… and start today.

A little Bull goes a long way

I

n 2008, Barry Bull’s world for the best years of his life, abruptly came to an end.

The internet invasion was rapidly changing the way music was sourced, and a 40 year Brisbane music institution closed.

It was like a sonic comet had hit the earth, forever wiping out traditional music delivery systems and the days of his iconic music store Toombul Music were over.

Musicians don’t retire, they just stop when there’s no more

music.

Retirement beckoned, but Barry wasn’t ready to let go and began his own record label, compiling the music he knew his customers loved.

The result was a double album CD series titled Music for Cruizin, for Sony Music, which earned him an ARIA gold album award.

He then reunited with his 50-year-old Fender guitar, and recorded a CD of the great guitar instrumentals that influenced his life.

He has now adapted his memoirs to stage and captures the nostalgia of an era in music.

“A little bull goes a long way” is a career retrospective, from the golden days of rock’n’roll in the ’50s to the digital age, and reveals the highs and lows of Toombul Music with true-life stories, live music and video moments rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s biggest music superstars.

SCIENCE EXHIBIT SET TO THRILL

FINISH THE YEAR WITH THE GOOD OL’ DAYS

FASTER than the speed of light, 100,000 times hotter than the sun, yet at the same time colder than space, it’s not a superhero but a super experiment and it’s coming to the Queensland Museum on December 9.

Tickets for the internationally touring exhibition from London’s Science Museum, Hadron Collider: Step inside the world’s greatest experiment, are on sale now.

It blends science with theatre and immerses visitors in the world-famous particle physics laboratory CERN in Switzerland where the Higgs boson, or God particle, was discovered.

Visitors can talk to virtual scientists, walk the tunnels of CERN, stand in the heart of a particle collision and relive an historical moment of scientific discovery.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator consisting of a 27km ring of superconducting magnets, which sits across Switzerland and Germany.

RETRO action is coming every month in the Valley.

Coinciding with the late John Lennon’s 76th birthday, a Beatles Afternoon this month will pay tribute to the British ’60s rock group.

The Beatles’ debut movie A Hard Day’s Night, is a day in the life of The Beatles as they prepare for the recording of a television special, will screen at 2pm.

It will be followed by Beatles music videos and performance clips and a licensed bar will be operating.

elements to help explain Particle physics and quantum mechanics – the science of the truly tiny,” she said.

“No other science experiment has captured the imagination quite like the Large Hadron Collider.”

P

repare well before embarking and it will ensure that you, the 4WD and caravan will all return home safely along with a full bank of memories and photos. It’s much easier and cheaper to fix something in a workshop than on the side of a dusty road.

HERE ARE 10 TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR VEHICLE AND CARAVAN IN-CHECK: 1. The difference between an ordeal and an adventure is your attitude, so always try to maintain a positive mindset.

2. If you are driving in constant dust behind someone, you’re travelling too close. This will clog up your engine’s air filters very quickly. Keep the windows up and use flow through (not recirculated) air-conditioning. This will pressurise the vehicle cabin and reduce the entry of dust.

3. Carry a full recovery kit and know how to use the equipment. A traction aid such as Maxtrax with a simple long-handled shovel are key tools for vehicle recovery.

4. Let someone know where you are going. Also, notify someone when you expect to arrive at designated locations or waypoints.

5. Have your 4WD serviced before the

trip and get a pre-trip inspection done.

Remember, the more touring and towing done, the more servicing the 4WD will need.

6. Keep a basic tool kit for the vehicle and caravan.

7. Pack a medical kit. If you are heading to remote locations, I recommend a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB).

8. Electronic GPS units are great but always store a physical map.

9. Always pack clothing for all weather conditions. You can get four seasons in one day out in the bush. Don’t forget the sunscreen, mozzie repellent and personal toiletries – all simple, but really important for staying comfortable.

10. Tyre pressures are key to getting through off-road tracks safely and comfortably. Reduce the pressure to 28-30 psi for a loaded vehicle on a dirt road, 20-22 psi on rocky-terrain and 12 psi on sand and really ‘boggy’ situations. The tyres will take it, just don’t do extreme sharp turning manoeuvres. A 4WD can drive on with 15 psi on tarmac comfortably up to 60km/h without damage.

Sometimes a 4-6 psi difference can mean remaining stuck or driving out of the situation. Once your 4WD has the correct pressures for the terrain, drop them on your caravan too.

Safety and comfort come first for the grey nomads preparing to set off to live the Aussie dream, travelling the country and discovering the beauty of the great land downunder.

Whether it’s for an extended trip or a just a few months or weeks at a time, there are plenty of options available, from luxury motorhomes and caravans to camper trailers and campervans.

But preparation is key. Know what to expect when towing a van.

The RACQ for example, has driver training courses and workshops to explain the rules and offers help with purchase, setting up, safe towing such as knowing weights, and maneuvering caravans and camper trailers.

It’s a whole new ball game to driving and these are essential skills for a long and memorable trip, so prepare well and happy travels.

It’s time to com-plane Travellers fed up with paying the price for airline delays have a new complaint service as a push continues for standardised compensation.

C

onsumer group Choice is calling for airlines to provide fixed financial compensation to travellers who have flights delayed or cancelled for reasons within the airline’s control, such as turnaround delays or mechanical problems.

Research reveals 23 per cent of passengers experienced a problem with a flight delay or cancellation during the past 12 months, topping the list for problems associated with domestic and international flying.

“Alarmingly, 63 per cent of all consumers who experienced a flight delay or cancellation reported no assistance was provided by the airline,” says Choice spokesman Tom Godfrey.

“It’s time we held airlines financially accountable for delays and cancellations within their control. Currently, there is no set compensation for consumers in Australia when an airline keeps you grounded.”

In the European Union if an airline causes a major delay, passengers receive compensation up to $900 and are offered refunds on flights, meals, refreshments, phone calls, emails and accommodation.

Mr Godfrey said the airlines should take responsibility for their own mistakes and passengers should not be paying for an airline’s delay.

“Compensation should be fair and standardised, no matter what airline you’re on or what the customer service agent decides you deserve on the day,” he said. Last year, the Bureau of

Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics found an average of 1-in-10 flights didn’t take off on time.

Jetstar was Australia’s worst performer with only 76.2 per cent of flights leaving on time.

“Even though so many of their flights don’t leave on time, Jetstar doesn’t offer passengers any standardised compensation,” Mr Godfrey said.

Choice research found more than 39 per cent of consumers making a travel related complaint found it too much of a hassle and 11 per cent didn’t know how to make a complaint.

In light of its research findings and to remove the hassle from complaining directly to the airlines, Choice is launching a website called complane. com.au. It allows consumers to complain directly to Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin or Tiger about a flight delay or cancellation.

Consumers simply enter flight details, the reason for delay or cancellation and other details, including the money and time lost from the delay or cancellation.

AUSTRALIAN TRAVELLERS win better deals Following an investigation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Expedia and Booking.com have agreed to amend price and availability parity clauses in their contracts with Australian accommodation providers.

The agreements extend to the largest online travel sites used for Australian accommodation, including Booking.com, Wotif.com, Hotels.com, and Expedia.com.

They remove barriers to price competition between major online travel sites for hotel bookings. Parity clauses generally require them to offer best price and availability to online travel sites.

This guarantees the online travel site the accommodation provider’s lowest rate and prevents competitors and consumers from negotiating better deals.

“The ACCC commenced its investigation after accommodation providers raised a range of concerns, including that these parity clauses were anti-competitive as they stopped consumers from getting different prices 44 YOUR TIME MAGAZINE / October 2016

from competing online sites,” ACCC chairman Rod Sims said.

“Australian accommodation providers will now be able to tailor their offers to better meet the needs of their customers.

They will be able to offer lower rates through telephone bookings and walkins and offer special rates and deals to customer loyalty groups, in addition to deals via Expedia and Booking.com.”

The ACCC conducted a range of targeted market inquiries, including an online questionnaire to providers seeking specific information about their dealings with online travel sites.

After reviewing over 500 responses and speaking with industry participants, the key issues were identified as the use of broad price parity and room availability clauses by online travel sites.

“The ACCC is pleased Booking.com and Expedia have agreed to amend the parity clauses because it will increase the incentive for them to compete with each other and allow consumers to shop around to get the best deal,” Mr Sims said.

October is “plan a cruise” month

ith more than one million Australians taking a cruise holiday each year, October has been declared “Plan a Cruise Month” by the cruise industry.

And the Cruise Centre recommends holidaymakers take advantage of special deals in October to plan their cruise holiday.

Cruise lines and travel agents accredited by the peak industry body, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia, are working together throughout the month to showcase the wide variety of cruise experiences on offer, proving there is a cruise holiday for everyone.

Aussies ready to sail away

ustralians have taken to cruising like a fish to water.

The nation reached a target of one million local cruise passengers six years ahead to become the world’s fastestgrowing passenger market.

More than one million Australians (4.2 per cent of the population) took a cruise holiday in 2014.

This is the world’s largest share per population and the first time any region has surpassed four per cent, according to Cruise Lines International Association.

Australians accounted for 4.5 per cent of the world’s 22 million cruise passengers in 2014, the fourth largest source market. That’s expected to rise to a 6.1 per cent share this year.

North America still dominates with 54.2 per cent of passengers, followed by Germany with 8 per cent and UK/Ireland with 7.4 per cent.

The South Pacific is the most popular cruise destination for Australians, with nearly

400,000 passengers (39 per cent) choosing to holiday in this region in 2014.

GOING IT ALONE ONCE you overcome the initial fear of the thought of travelling alone, especially when you’re not as young and fit as you’d like to be, solo travel is intensely rewarding.

The opening quote by Herman Melville sets the tone for the events that are about to occur on the high seas of the North Atlantic Ocean. Herbert Stone has come on duty for the midnight to 4am shift. There have been sightings of icebergs in the area and their ship had had a close shave earlier. His captain decided to stay put for the night.

It is April 4, 1912, and by the following day the greatest disaster in maritime history had occurred.

The Titanic had sunk with 1500 lives lost. Reporter John Steadman, whose life has been on the skids, decides to investigate. This is a compelling read, particularly since much of the story is based on fact.

David Dyer’s career as a lawyer, merchant marine officer and now as an English literature teacher has given him excellent insight and qualifications for his debut fact/fiction novel.

The story is about two ships, the Californian and the Titanic. Two men, Herbert Stone, the second officer on the midnight watch of the SS Californian who witnessed distress rockets from the Titanic and his Captain Lord, who failed to respond. Lord covered up his actions during inquiries in New York and Liverpool. John Steadman, a troubled alcoholic journalist, doggedly uncovers the truth about the personality conflicts between the two men possibly at the cost of 1500 lives.

A good story. 8/10

BOOK review JOHN KLEINSCHMIDT The Midnight Watch is a good story about the sinking of the Titanic well told from a different perspective. A steamer that saw the drama unfold could have saved hundreds of lives with a different response to the Titanic’s distress signals.

The story documents the response and the subsequent fall from grace of a well-respected ship’s captain and his second officer who chose loyalty to his captain over his own moral values.

The principal architect of their demise is a competent but unreliable journalist in search of the elusive scoop, first for his newspaper and ultimately to salve his conscience.

There are good and bad people in this story but there are no heroes.

Based on the true story of the SS Californian, the ship that saw the Titanic’s distress rockets and yet for some reason did nothing, this psychological thriller shows that the smallest of human failings can lead to the greatest of disasters.

Based on real events taken from historical records, the novel focuses on the relationship between the second officer, Herbert Stone, who was on the midnight watch and his captain Stanley Lord who ordered the British steam ship to stand fast. It examines the frailty of men, loyalty and fate.

Just when I thought nothing more, or at least nothing new, could be said about the Titanic, up bubbles The Midnight Watch. Australian author, lawyer and selfconfessed Titanic obsessive, David Dyer has produced a mesmerising page-turner from the viewpoint of the crew of the nearby Californian on that fateful night. Dyer, embeds himself in the story in the persona of a fictional reporter determined to uncover the facts. His careful and accurate research leads to a possible but, to my mind, highly unconvincing solution to the puzzle. Captain Lord, disgraced and unremorseful, retires to obscurity, leaving me alone on his wide sea agonising over his inexplicable and pitiless inaction. This book raises more questions than it answers, but don’t be afraid to dive in.

MARY BARBER It’s a hard thing to tackle such a familiar story and give it new life but all credit to David Dyer.

This was a magnificent read.

We step on-board the Californian which was within sight of the sinking Titanic. We meet the captain, and the officer in charge of the fateful midnight watch.

Dyer seeks to explain why these men did not assist the Titanic. He suggests that the timid second officer Herbert Stone, the stern Captain Lord and the fame-seeking wireless boy, were just behaving as their positions and personalities dictated. Rather a fatalistic view but before judging, we need to remember these men did not know what they were witnessing. Or did they?

This is a five star read that enriched my understanding of the Titanic disaster and ship life in general.

This is a novel I will read again! The author’s background as a lawyer and a ship’s officer has allowed him to depict accurately the scenes on board ship and in the courts.

There is much more though – for me the characters came alive. For example, “the city editor had tufts of reddish hair sprouting from his nose and ears, and his face was as narrow as a rat”. Every character is similarly and meticulously depicted, from the immoveable Captain Lord to the insecure Herbert Stone swayed by the allegory of his favourite novel Moby Dick. The depiction of the third class real-life Sage family is heart breaking and an insight into the terrible reality faced by all who knew they were about to perish. This is a debut novel for David Dyer who now teaches English in Sydney. It has hit the internet with an incredible number of comments and even the family tree for the Sage family. Definitely one of my all-time favourites!
