I

t’s the little things that creep into life without us even noticing, yet looking back we can see how much things have changed in a lifetime. The case in point was a pillowcase. I recently bought a new pillow and noticed that it had a use-by date printed on it. How extraordinary.

When did that become necessary?

I always imagined you just kept using a pillow until one day it didn’t suit any more or was looking the worse for wear, not that it had a life span or that you were too silly to work out for yourself when to toss it out.

This led to a discussion with an old school friend, and soon we were rattling off all the little things that we

Contents had seen appear or disappear in recent decades, from the kitchen (I still have a pressure cooker and she still has a melon-baller) to the lounge (turntables and big speaker systems) to the bedroom (when kids had only one “good” dress). The old puddings (sago and tapioca) have become desserts and the days of recycling rubber bands, string and brown paper are gone or fast disappearing.

Kate Callahan discusses some of the changes around us in Time Warp, a new nostalgia column starting this month. Another new column is Life in Focus with Pauline Du Reitz who observes life in our changing world.

Again, it’s the little things that matter.

On an entirely different subject and one, that like taxes, is inevitable, Angela Bensted writes about death and funerals. It’s a difficult subject that touches us all and yet we are so reluctant to think about.

The way to go ...

It’s a subject that affects everyone and yet one that nobody really wants to discuss. ANGELA BENSTED investigates changing funeral industry trends.

W

hen 81-year-old Cliff said a final goodbye to his wife Mary Patricia (Pat) he planned every aspect of the event himself with meticulous attention to detail.

He sat opposite the funeral director in his front room, trying not to look at Pat’s dusty piano and photos of their eight children, leafing slowly through a coffin brochure.

He agonised over the timbers, the handles and the linings as he struggled to respect his graceful wife without being “too flashy”.

A deeply religious man, Cliff then spent hours tinkering with the service

booklet, determined that every prayer, every hymn, be the perfect ode to his “beloved”.

Fast forward four years to Brisbane’s Holy Spirit Northside Hospital where Cliff’s been told he has incurable cancer.

Within hours of absorbing the news, Cliff reminds his assembled family he doesn’t want a funeral and his body has been offered to the University of Queensland’s Biomedical Sciences School for research.

“There was no doubt about his intentions,” Cliff’s eldest son Mark, 59, says. “He never had any second thoughts.”

body to go to the university years ago, but only a few weeks before his death the service had closed its intake for the year so they couldn’t accept it.

With time running out, the family scrambled to contact other universities, eventually finding a place for their father with the QUT Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation.

The University of Queensland, Griffith University, James Cook University and the Queensland University of Technology all accept bequests of bodies within a certain time of death.

The bodies are used for teaching the

next generation of medical students and scientists, and then later cremated at the university’s expense with the ashes generally returned to the family.

“I don’t think Dad had a very high opinion of himself. Maybe he thought, almost tongue in cheek, he could do some good when he was dead,” Mark says.

And while his mother Pat’s funeral had been very traditional with a church service and burial in her family’s plot, Mark says his dad wanted none of that.

“He didn’t want to be lying in a coffin paraded in front of people in the church,” Mark says.

Despite Cliff’s aversion to funerals and eulogies, his family honoured him with both when he passed away last November, just days after his diagnosis.

“We felt he should have one and he should have had it in that church where he belonged for the greater part of his life,” Mark says.

The importance of the funeral ceremony to the grieving process has become lost in today’s fast-paced world according to the Queensland Funeral Directors Association.

President Brett Gow and his colleague Don Burstow, the immediate past president, say there is a significant long-term trend to no-frills disposal rather than ceremony.

“Families are confusing efficiency with effectiveness,” Don says.

“People are avoiding ceremony, electing to have funeral directors just transfer a dead family member to crematorium without a funeral.

“People are not gathering. They’re not embracing the pain of their loss.”

COVER STORY ceremony with tradition. Just like the people they honour, funerals can come in all shapes and sizes, particularly with the move away from religious ceremonies.

Don estimates that nearly 70 per cent of services today are conducted by celebrants whereas, maybe 15 years ago, this figure would have been less than two per cent.

With the increase in celebrants has come an increase in modern music, rather than hymns, and the option of having a funeral in the home.

Many families are finding creative ways to weave things into the service to make it more personal.

The family of one motor racing identity wanted his hearse adorned with his racing numbers and his name on the doors and the windscreen.

“It looked magic, like a hearse on the grid at Bathurst,” Don says, prompting Brett to suggest it was the quickest time he’d ever made the trip to the cemetery.

Don says there are no limits on a funeral ceremony.

“If it’s legal we can make it happen for families.”

As people take more interest in the style of their send-off, they’re also asking questions about how their body is laid to rest.

Some would rather plant a tree than have a headstone to mark their passing and green burials are gaining popularity as people consider their carbon footprint, even in death.

Traditional burial may involve embalming with chemicals which can be harmful to the ecosystem, cremation consumes a lot of electricity or natural gas, and the upkeep of a lawn cemetery involves constant mowing.

Crystal Waters eco-community in the Sunshine Coast hinterland has its own green burials cemetery and the Alberton cemetery on the Gold Coast has a natural burial section where there are no grave markers, just a simple sculpture at the entrance where families can place a plaque.

But otherwise, there are limited options for green burials in southeast Queensland according to Esther Swanborough from Swanborough Funerals.

“So far there hasn’t been the demand,” she says, adding “most people will choose a funeral that is in between.”

“The lacquers and the finishes (in traditional coffins and caskets) are not environmentally friendly,” Esther says.

So people conscious of environmental impact are choosing caskets made from

Funeral directors also regularly work with families from non-western backgrounds to observe cultural traditions while still abiding by local laws.

In the Hindu tradition bodies are burnt on an open pyre, a practice local authorities here are unlikely to embrace.

“But we have been asked,” Brett says.

Instead, he arranges services at the front of the cremator where the family can push the coffin in.

Don adds a Hindu family will be much more hands-on in the care of the deceased, washing and drying the body and then anointing it with oils and powder, before dressing it themselves and placing it in the coffin.

While Cliff’s “non-funeral” as the family called it last year, had all the hallmarks of the traditional Catholic ceremony, there was no coffin.

But Mark says this didn’t affect his

ability to grieve his father. He wasn’t with his dad when he died but arrived at the hospital soon after to sit with him.

“Having been through that, not having a body at the funeral made no difference,” he says.

When a person dies in hospital, there’s a window of about three hours for family members to sit with the body, according to Holy Spirit Northside Hospital’s Mission Executive, Mary Dalmau.

Outside that time, a visit to the hospital mortuary is generally available, which Mary says can help with grieving.

“There is a sense that viewing the body is a good thing. It gives completeness,” she says.

“Some people say they want to remember their loved one (a certain) way, but (viewing the body) is a reverencing of life.”

“But death is confronting,” he says.

Society is generally healthier and living longer so our experience attending and organising funerals is being delayed.

Don’s family business records reveal that, 100 years ago, by the time someone reached 15 they’d probably faced four or five significant losses.

her husband brought her young grandchildren to the side of the coffin.

In front of a chapel full of people, she explained what had happened to their grandfather, telling them it was ok to be really sad that he had died and not to be frightened.

“She gave this wonderful piece of teaching not just to her grandchildren but hopefully to the others in the chapel as well,” Don says.

Decisions on viewing a body are intensely personal and each family member must make their own decision.

For some families, a personalised funeral is not an option, as even the simplest solution might be unaffordable.

The Queensland Funeral Directors Association puts funeral costs at between $4000 and $12,000, with cremations cheaper than burial, particularly if a new grave needs to be purchased.

Families who can’t afford this can apply to the Coroner’s Court for assistance.

The Government chooses the location and there can be no grave markings.

In 2016 there were 159 so-called pauper’s funerals in the South Queensland region (Brisbane and surrounding areas) and 55 in the Sunshine Coast region, the majority cremations in both regions.

It’s been nearly six months since Mark’s dad died and while he’s relieved the family could honour Cliff’s desire to donate his body to medical research, the lack of a physical memorial bothers him.

“Apart from records in a government building, there’s no permanent record of him having lived and died.

“There’s got to be something permanent, some sort of recognition,” Mark says.

But as for ignoring Cliff’s request for no funeral, Mark says the family has no regrets.

“Funerals aren’t just about the person who has died. If anything, it’s about the rest of the community,” he says.

“The funeral is for the family and others to say goodbye.”

WHAT TO DO when someone dies Death is a fact of life, but it’s something we don’t like to think about – until we lose someone close to us.

Here are some of the decisions that to be made, your rights and obligations: A post mortem will automatically be scheduled if the deceased has not visited a doctor within three months.

For family, this can be a traumatic experience. It can also cause unwanted delays. To avoid such a situation, it is important, especially for the elderly and those with health concerns, to visit a doctor for a check-up quarterly.

Ambulance officers do not remove the deceased. Call the police rather than the ambulance service in the event of an unexpected death at home, or if you are in doubt.

If no doctor is available, and the body must be taken to the nearest State hospital mortuary by the Government contracted funeral director, this is done at no cost to you and no fee is due.

You may wish to contact a minister or priest. It is not necessary at this time to discuss arrangements, but you may wish to seek spiritual guidance.

If a death occurs at home and the deceased has been under the care of a doctor, then call your doctor. If not, or you are unsure or concerned, call the police and they will contact the doctor.

If for any reason a doctor is unavailable, the police will arrange for the body to be taken to the nearest State hospital mortuary. Once a death certificate has been issued, the body will be released into the care of a funeral director of your choice.

If the death occurs in a hospital, when you are ready, the body will be taken to the hospital mortuary. You then have to make arrangements through a funeral director.

Most nursing home residents have already nominated their funeral director. Staff will immediately notify you if you are not already in

attendance. A doctor’s certificate is still required and once issued, the body will be released into the care of the funeral director.

Never feel rushed or pressured.

You have every right to take the time to sit with the deceased until you are ready for the body to be removed.

When you are ready, call the funeral director to make an appointment at the chapel or request an interview at your home.

You are not bound by any preexisting arrangements. A prearrangement is a free service not an obligation. It is an opportunity for an individual to list their wishes for their funeral service.

However things can change as time goes by, and these arrangements are not an order but a guide to take pressure off at a time when it is difficult to think clearly.

You will probably already have discussed if burial or cremation is preferred. For cremation, it is important to also obtain Government forms for permission to cremate before the body is released into the care of the funeral home.

VICTORIA BARRACKS REVISITS LIGHT HORSE AT BEERSHEBA

Major General (retired) Peter Phillips and Ros Phillips enjoy a tour of Brisbane’s Victoria Barracks with volunteers Bev, Karen and Marilyn. Maj Gen Phillips was a Brigadier when he served as Commander First Military District from 1980-83.

THE Army Museum South Queensland will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the legendary charge by the Australian Light Horse at Beersheba from July 28.

The exhibition will be on display at Victoria Barracks, until December.

A visit to the exhibition will include a tour of Victoria Barracks and devonshire tea in the historic Officer’s Mess.

Another interesting aspect of a visit to the Army Museum South Queensland is an inspection and explanation of four very important field guns which include

the 25 Pounder, its replacement the M2A2, the L2 BAT (Battalion Anti Tank) and the Bofors.

The generosity of Allied Coating Services, Redbank Plains, International Paints, Willawong and Darra Tyre Services for their assistance with restoration, has been much appreciated.

SURVEY FINDS RETIREMENT AGE IS A MATTER OF GENDER

RESEARCHERS for a recent retirement survey found that men are in denial over retirement age while women are prepared to roll up their sleeves well into their 80s.

The survey of more than 750 Queenslanders aged over 45 found 22 per cent of respondents expect to retire in their 70s or 80s — and 70 per cent of those are women.

Most women believe they will retire older than their parents did, while most men expect to clock off at a younger age.

Chiou See Anderson of Elements Retirement Village which commissioned the research, said 40 per cent of residents were single women and she was not surprised by the gender divide.

“Older women realise that they may not have enough assets to retire, while men of the same age generally are better prepared and have a more structured financial plan in place,” she said.

“Working is also attractive to women because it’s a great form of socialisation.”

The retirement survey also found that 17 per cent of Queenslanders are not looking forward to retirement; 52 per cent plan to stay in their current home when they retire and 20 per cent of retirees have considered going, or have gone, back into paid work.

I made good use of these vehicles in the 1940s and 1950s in the Royal Air Force and later in the construction industry.

They were a total American product (Willys never operated in the UK) and the engine, and in fact the

basic vehicle, was designed by WillysOverland (at one time the second largest car manufacturer after Ford).

In 1940, the USA government were looking for a small, light and manoeuvrable easily maintained all purpose vehicle for the US army. The four wheel drive Willys “Quad” fit the bill almost completely.

Billie Marty THANK you so much for those excellent articles and advice for Aged people who have the need for My Aged Care (YT Feb). My husband had a stroke in November, 2016 and was discharged from rehab on February 8, 2017 and put on to a TCP in-home care program.

However, because he had to be admitted to hospital on March 8, for more tests, our TCP program was immediately cancelled. Since that date I have been negotiating my way around the very complex maze of the new My Aged Care Program.

Even though Michael had been assessed by TCP on February 2, and we have an official letter of approval from My Aged Care, he is still in the queue waiting for funding so we had no in-home care for almost two weeks after was discharged on March 13.

At least Anglicare have come to our rescue and I now have a psysio and 2 x 2 hours a week respite care, but I understand this service may only be available for two weeks.

I have therefore contacted Kendall

Morton, the woman featured in your story, to see if she can give us any assistance of working through the maze that is the new in-home My Aged Care program.

It has been a very stressful time for myself as my husband’s advocate and for him without any physio or OT in-home care.

Denise Corbin I WOULD like to make readers aware of a blatant case of ageism I was disgusted to witness just before Christmas. So taken aback was I, that it has taken me this long to understand, mostly through talking it out with friends and relatives.

The scene played out thus: an older female approached a trendy-type business regarding services that they offer. I don’t know if she already had an appointment or was just shopping, but she was turned away with some flimsy excuse which, I have since found out but already suspected, wasn’t true.

That older female customer had a resigned look as she politely took her leave, while we few witnesses stood gaping at what had occurred.

The part that I had the most trouble understanding was how a smallish business can turn away ANY customers at the expense of keeping up their trendy image! As an older person myself, I never want to feel so resigned to being turned away for that very reason — age.

Shame on them. I would not have been so gracious as to leave the premises without comment on their deplorable customer service attitude, but at the time I was present at the request of friends and did not want to embarrass them by making a scene.

I have named and shamed that business to my friends and relatives, a small thing to do I know but they’re not worthy of free publicity from any further action I could take.

Language is a story in itself So what exactly is language? DAVID PARMITER examines the progress of the sequence of sounds that humans put together to communicate.

I

t may be “Hey, you” or “How, kiemo sabi” or “wassup bro”. It could even be “Ngayulu waltja tjutangka kuwarri tjunururiki”, which means “today I’ll be together with my family” in the language of the Gagadju people of Kakadu.

Language began in the late Stone Age when people needed to talk to each other.

“Hey, bone-head, help me move this dolmen into position so we can get the lintel on top; it’s going to be the summer solstice soon”. Stonehenge brings back that conversation from 5000BC. Here, in Gondwanaland, the peoples who moved here 40,000 years ago also needed to communicate, using language which still survives.

As the Stone Age moved on to the Bronze Age, and later the Iron Age (around 3000BC), people in Europe started moving about. Slowly the nomads advanced from a hunter-gather society into an agrarian society and began to settle, grow crops and herd animals.

Civilisation, as we know it, began.

With it, there developed an oral tradition of story telling. Nobody could read or write hence they passed their stories from generation to generation by word of mouth.

The age of the Norse sagas and the Saxon warrior tales began. Think Beowulf and The Battle of Maldon (AD991, Saxons vs Vikings). By the way, the Saxons won. We may say language began with monosyllables. Most of the Celtic language consists of short “grunty” words which described immediate family and environmental relationships. Point, and name.

Man, wif, cild, bec, broc, wey, cum, go are Celtic words which survived. Anyone speak the modern Celtic language, Welsh? In time, the Saxons began to put monosyllables together to form what we call “compound nouns” – hus-bond, wif-man, house-carl, shield-wall, war-axe and lif-blöd. Verbs, the doing words, were introduced to connect the nouns.

When the Normans arrived they took over the culture and enforced their own laws, written in Latin, so the language developed into two strains. The language of the nobility and the older language of the common people. The pig/cuw in the field became the porc/boeuf on the table.

The lord of the manor had to look after and protect the serfs on his estate, while ripping them off for their labour.

This was called feudalism, or the

forerunner of the welfare state. We have not learnt very much!

During the Renaissance, the English upper classes travelled extensively around the Continent; sometimes for warfare and subjugation, and sometimes for self-education in the more advanced Romance civilisations of France, Italy and Greece. Along the way they picked up new and more flowery ways of speaking.

Thus our language became more complex, our vocabulary more rich and our grammar more formalised along the established Latinate model.

Society from then on became divided between the educated and the literate, and the ill-educated and the industrial.

Two languages again.

Today we have many languages. The common language we use at home, largely monosyllabic, as it always has been. “Do. Don’t. Yeah. Nah. How was school? Good. Like. Y’know. Whadevah.”

And don’t forget the ‘F’ word: Fanks.

The other unprintables were also Saxon rude words for body parts and functions.

All monosyllables.

Then there’s the literary language that we read in newspapers and books, usually peppered with longer words and

more complex sentences because it is designed to be read by literate people.

The language of the law is full of convention, legal-speak and obfuscation because it is the job of the law to manipulate the truth.

The defence lawyer knows a client is guilty, but has to outplay the prosecution by legal argument into check-mate to get the client off when everybody knows the defendant is guilty. Or otherwise.

The language of commerce is to fool you into wanting their product by telling you that you need it. But you cannot rush in and save by spending more than you’ve got in the bank. Oh, yes, you can; just borrow more ... at 22 per cent usurious interest by corporate thieves.

The language of politics is to persuade you to vote for the next lot on the grounds that you hate what the last lot did, or didn’t do; which was to ‘post-truth’ their promises and deliver you nothing.

Politics is the art of keeping your seat until pension time. Plus you get expenses.

Finally, there’s the language of the Internet. And if you don’t understand that, you’ll get bitten. Online anything means taking your pants off to the world.

I wouldn’t recommend it.

Let’s do the Time Warp again Remember the good ol’ days? A time when life was simpler? KATE CALLAHAN introduces her new nostalgia column, Time Warp, which will recall, reminisce and ruminate on the many changes, sometimes very small ones, that have occurred during our lifetime.

M

ention the term “time warp” in conversation and you will almost certainly be met with a smile, a few fancy dance steps, or if you’re lucky, a few bars of: It’s just a jump to the left / And then a step to the right / With your hands on your hips / You bring your knees in tight / But it’s the pelvic thrust / That really drives you insane/ Let’s do the time warp again.

It is one of the most memorable songs from one of the most remarkable cult musicals of the 1970s, the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

You know the story. A straight-laced, square couple, seeking shelter from a storm find themselves in the castle of a transgender alien mad scientist, intent on creating a buff bodybuilder for his own fascination and entertainment.

It’s all pretty outrageous stuff – haunted mansions and secret labs, corsets and glitter, sex and the destruction of innocence – which brings me to the point of this new column.

Gather close and I’ll let you into a personal secret. Sometimes I feel like Janet attending the Annual Transylvanian Convention – so out of

place, if you know what I mean.

Sometimes I wish I could just turn back the clock and stay right where my memories take me so often – the past.

Now that would be a fine old time warp – an imaginary distortion of space and time that allows people to move from one period another.

Perhaps it’s a function of age, but the seemingly endless sunny days of my youth call me more frequently now that I’m in my 60th year.

(Perish the thought, I’m starting to sound like my mother, who with damp blue eyes would refer wistfully to “the halcyon days of yore”.)

But Mum, you were dead right. Back in the old days, things were easier and simpler somehow.

Okay, washing was an all-day affair and, sure, you had to stoke up the boiler or feed the ringer, taking care not to get fingers, thumbs or long hair caught in the apparatus.

But you didn’t have to spend half the morning in a knot of frustration talking to a Telstra “consultant” in some far-off land about the vagaries of your home internet connection.

Gosh, life in the ’60s and ’70s was good, which is not to say that life in 2017 is miserable. Life is generally better than the alternative, but modern life is just different from how I remember life being.

Wardrobes were smaller when I was young because we didn’t have many clothes. There was no need to learn the “art of decluttering”. We were flat out having enough of any one thing. You would have to say that our propensity for accumulation is a recent phenomenon.

These days my clothes spill from one built-in wardrobe to another and then to another. I also have large plastic bins to house my winter clothes during the summer – and please don’t mention the shoe collection.

My better half and I can’t share a walk-in wardrobe. It’s big enough for his clothes only.

Back in the 1960s, Mum had two good frocks, which were for Church or school concerts. She had two pairs of shoes, one of which she had bought before the War, one hat, one handbag and two pairs of gloves.

Socks were darned. String and brown paper were saved. Grandfather’s old

trousers were cut down for the children.

Stale bread was turned into bread and butter pudding. The combustion stove heated the water.

And without wishing to cause fright or offend sensibilities, sometimes (well often, if I’m to be completely honest) we shared the bath water. I always had first bath. It was a privilege of being the youngest and the only girl.

Dad always bathed last, but he smelled clean, just like Sunlight soap. If I close my eyes, I can smell him now.

Granny Smith apples came in boxes and, to prevent bruising I suppose, half the apples were wrapped in squares of green, wax paper. It was my job to collect the wax paper, flatten out each piece and then thread it onto a hook made of fencing wire, whereupon the whole kit and caboodle was hung in the outhouse and used for ablution.

It all sounds rather appalling now, but it didn’t seem so at the time. One of the golden rules of joyful reminiscence is that it just does not do to apply today’s standards to the past.

And so, dear Reader, welcome to Time Warp.

James turns life into a new picture of health When the going gets tough, the tough get going. JANET MARSHALL meets living proof that there’s no need to give up — enjoy your later years for longer.

T

wo years ago, James Middleton Murray was overweight, his blood pressure was sky high and his cholesterol level was rising: years of running and football had wrecked his knees. He was also taking medication for depression and a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes was just around the corner.

At 67, he was looking his worst-case scenario for old age in the eye – ill, and ending his days in a nursing home, perhaps afflicted with the dementia that two of his close relatives had endured.

But two things were in James’ favour.

Firstly, he received bi-lateral knee replacement surgery and, secondly, he possessed the grit and determination to change his lifestyle.

Today, just two years later, James is trim, muscular and 23kg lighter.

He exercises regularly, no longer needs any medication and the threat of diabetes has receded.

He has also written a book, Ageing Well, to inspire and help other seniors to follow his example. James believes that anyone can become fitter, leaner and healthier if, like him, they are prepared to put in the work and have the grit to stay the course.

James Murray, now nudging 70, is ready for a long and healthy y old age and (right) his guide book.

“I’d always played sport and lifted weights when I was younger,” he says.

“But several years ago I started a business and it didn’t do well. I then took the plunge a second time and that also failed, this time leaving me bankrupt.

“During that intensely stressful period, I stopped looking after myself, quickly gained weight and became depressed.”

James was given medication to treat

his depression and the high blood pressure and rising cholesterol levels that went with his weight gain.

Then, he visited an orthopaedic surgeon and in February 2014 made the radical choice to have both knees replaced in one round of surgery. It was the turning point for his return to the lean and muscular body he’d had in his younger days.

“The pain I experienced after surgery was dreadful and climbing the 12 steps up to my bedroom five days later took me an agonising 15 minutes,” he says.

Yet, only three weeks later, James was walking without crutches and had made the decision to get a grip on his weight and start walking his way back to health.

“My surgeon had given me the tools I needed to turn my life around – my new knees. I started by walking for 30 minutes each day and gradually built up to much longer walks. I also started to lift free weights again and within a month I had lost 4kg.”

It was just the beginning, and over the next 10 months muscle gradually replaced body fat and, with the help of his wife Angela’s healthy recipes — some of which are featured in his book — his

weight continued to fall away.

Better still, he no longer needed his prescription medications, and by the time he saw his surgeon again he was a healthy 82kg.

“I cut out sugar and extra salt, reduced my alcohol intake and ate less dairy,” he says. “Gradually, I lost my taste for sweet and salty things but I enjoyed the freshly prepared meals and, as I grew fitter, I stopped worrying about ending up in a nursing home and burdening my children and grandchildren with expensive care bills.”

Today, James is an enthusiastic speaker to groups of seniors who are keen to hear how they too can improve their health through exercise and food and enjoy their later years for longer.

“I tell them that if they are prepared to get up and move then they’ll not only be a healthier version of themselves, they’ll also live longer and enjoy their remaining years.” he says.

Norwegian shipbuilder bestowed names on a new state The famous Norwegian polar exploration vessel the Fram has a strong Queensland connection, writes DIANA HACKER.

C

olin Archer, born in Norway in 1832, was the eighth of nine sons and 13 children of William and Julia Archer. He was well educated as were his siblings, and at age 17 was sent to California to find his brother Tom. This errand was successful as was his gold digging and he continued on to Queensland.

Colin arrived at his brother’s Eidsvold Station in 1852 and took up residence at Coonambula an out station established by Willie, Charles and Tom Archer. Here he was learnt all facets of colonial life.

Colin traversed the Callide Valley and Peak Downs areas resulting in the discovery of the Fitzroy River and the mere (lake) which they named Farris after a lake in Norway. He marked out other pastoral runs between Biloela and Gladstone and named them Kroombit and Karibo as well as naming Callide Creek, from Kall Eide, Norwegian for “the ferryman”.

The bell from the Fram the Byfield (File Fjield) area where Mt Sleipner and Mt Berserker also bear names of Scandinavian origin. Colin returned to Coonambula by way of Port Curtis which he declared “very fine” and “well adapted to shipping”.

Charles Archer began the move from Eidsvold to Farris, later known as Gracemere, and

Colin brought supplies to the new run in his modified ketch Elida. He also took another Archer family vessel, the Jenny Lind, up Raglan Creek.

While at Gracemere he drew the plans for the graceful homestead built beside the mere.

Colin returned to Norway for an extended vacation in 1861, intending to return, but he never made it. He established a boat building yard at the water’s edge below the Archer family home Tolderodden, in Larvick and married in 1868.

By 1871 he had built a boat, Maggie I for himself, two rescue boats and two pilot boats and from 1872, began building bigger vessels. By 1880 his reputation had spread around Norway and Britain and by 1890, the world.

Colin’s best known work was his design and construction of the polar exploration vessel the Fram built in 1891-92, in consultation with Fridjt Nansen.

Both the bow and stern were strengthened with a 1.25m

thickness of oak. The sides were 70- 80 cm thick and had three layers, two inner of oak and the outer of Greenhear.

The Fram was designed as a three-masted schooner with a 34m high main mast of pitch pine. A triple expansion steam engine of 220hp gave a speed of 6-7 nautical miles in a calm sea.

The scientific voyage to the North Polar region under the command of Fridtj Nansen saw the Fram deliberately frozen in so that the northern ice cap drift could be examined.

Colin’s triple wooden hull withstood the great pressure of the ice. In 1911 Roald Amundsen was in command of Fram when it reached the South Pole, which was achieved ahead of Scott’s expedition.

On Amundsen’s return, Colin hosted a dinner at his home to honour the adventurer.

Fram thus held the record of having sailed furthermost north and south. In the late 1930s it was brought ashore in Oslo and a building erected over it.

A museum was developed within the building, housing many artifacts related to polar exploration and the daring men who undertook such risky adventures.

For his work, Colin Archer received the Order of St Olav in 1886 and in 1896, the Commander of the Order of St Olav for “services rendered for ship construction and the furtherance of scientific voyages of discovery”.

While the construction of Fram was a great success, the rescue boats, still known as Colin Archers, are considered to be his greatest contribution to mankind as they have saved many lives. The first of these was built using material left over from building Fram.

Colin closed his Rekkevik boatyard in 1909 and died at home in 1921.

Participants train in a community gym-clinic, using age-specific HUR resistance training equipment, and are guided, supported and motivated by exercise physiologists.

he Muscling up Against Disability (MUAD) project is making a difference, with participating adults aged 65-92 years, averaging more than 230 per cent increase in upper and lower body, and core strength.

Burnie Brae Healthy Connections exercise clinic at Chermside, launched MUAD a year ago to evaluate the effectiveness of progressive resistance training as a service model of care.

Since then, more than 240 have participated and resistance training has been found to be a powerful but underutilised approach to beating later life disability.

While more older adults are becoming proactive about their personal health, few are turning to weight bearing and resistance training exercises to promote and maintain muscle mass and strength.

Wardrobe revolution proves an Insta-success With ageing no longer a dirty word and Baby Boomers embracing encore careers, there’s a new generation that will not just sit and crochet but is re-inventing itself and experimenting with all things technological, writes KAY McMAHON.

“I started on Facebook but then discovered the advanced styling phenomenon [a book, movie, Instagram sensation created by Ari Seth Cohen chronicling the style of mature, boomer women].

“I saw these women and said, ‘That’s my tribe. That’s what I want to be when I grow up’.”

Elizabeth’s early posts focused on her accessories and were photographed by her son.

She has fine-tuned her portfolio and has branded herself as “curating and creating, and telling stories through colour, pattern and styling”.

She now collaborates with professional photographers and other creatives to build her online presence.

“My current job working in fashion came about by Instagram. And now I am running workshops on fabric manipulation, embellishment

and how to extend your style by customizing and individualizing your look. These are also promoted on my social media.”

She describes herself as a “thrifter” and a lover of the slow fashion movement.

Hey … they know my name!

An act of kindness at a supermarket checkout sets PAULINE DU REITZ thinking about how we are perceived in a changing world.

A

couple of years ago, I was in a queue in a small supermarket. The age demographic lined up for the checkout was probably 60 years plus.

An elderly man, about five places in front of me had just paid for his shopping but was experiencing difficulty as he tried to maneuver his trolley out through the door.

The check-out chick, possibly half his age, waved at the queue and said, “hold on folks, I’ll be right back”. She moved to

the elderly man, took his trolley and helped him to slide it along and set him on a course towards the car park.

As she said goodbye to him, she patted his back in a kind manner while smiling and talking to him. She returned to her checkout, looked at the queue, and said, “Thanks for waiting”.

When I had paid for my groceries, I thanked her for her kindness to the elderly man.

I also said, “do you realize that you

may be the only person who speaks to that man today?”

That checkout experience stayed with me for days. I had never considered that there are possibly some, maybe many, in our community who live alone and one of the few activities where they connect and have some interaction with others might be in a store.

I made a seachange 15 years ago. I came from a large city where no one really notices you and it didn’t matter, because there were plenty of interactions and things associated with my lifestyle to give me a sense of connection.

For most of my time since moving, I have worked, but in recent times, I retired. Now that I am retired, that means fulltime writer, and there are many days when I don’t see or interact with anyone.

I have also joined the age demographic of the people in that supermarket queue. I notice how older people are treated, sometimes with kindness, sometimes ignored, sometimes with impatience or disdain.

Recently I was at a department store counter where an elderly woman was having some difficulty organising payment from her purse. The shop assistant was quite unpleasant to her.

When it was my turn to be served, I commented that the woman had had some difficulty and the shop assistant very quickly made some disparaging remarks about “old people”.

I lent in close and said very quietly, “you know, one day, you will be old, just like that woman, and you will be mortified if someone treats you as you treated her. You will also be thankful if someone like you is respectful and kind”.

I’m sure, there are times when we all observe the manner in which elderly people are treated. The big question is, are we prepared to stand up for them?

As a culture, do we respect and acknowledge that those, other than the young and trendy, should be valued.

Most of us grew up in a culture where older persons were respected. The world has changed, from a sense of community and belonging, to a focus of individuality and self-centeredness.

As community participants, our options are to accept the behaviours that disregard us, or others, or to respectfully remind the offenders of their behaviours.

If we let them get away with poor behaviour, they will think that the behaviour is acceptable.

Of course it is always important to be aware of the positives.

In recent years as I have aged, I notice that people out there who I have never met, call me Sweetie, Love, Darl, and other names of endearment, and I laugh and think, hey, they know my name!

Free forum connects prostate cancer experts with community

T

he Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) has this year chosen Brisbane to host Community Conversations, connecting the Australian community with leading researchers to share the latest findings in the field.

PCFA is encouraging Queenslanders to attend the free event, at the Translational Research Institute (TRI), one of the nation’s leading prostate cancer research hubs.

Facilitated by former ABC journalist, radio host and author Julie McCrossin, this open, interactive forum will give access to the latest information on prostate cancer and the latest trends on the management of the disease.

This is a newly created platform for researchers specialising in prostate cancer to address an audience impacted by the disease and share the latest medical advances related to prostate

cancer detection, treatment and management.

Topics will include current treatment options and diet and nutrition to help manage side effects of treatment.

In addition, to benefit culturally diverse communities, the event will specifically cater for attendees of Chinese background via an interpreting and translation service.

Survivorship research expert Professor Suzanne Chambers, academic GP Professor Jenny Doust, urologist and researcher Ian Vela, researcher Michele Teng, nutritional researcher Olivia Right, CCQ community services manager Amy Parker and prostate cancer nurse Chris McNamara will deliver presentations and also form a panel to specifically address questions from the audience.

“PCFA supports world leading research into prostate cancer and we feel it is important to allow people in

the community who have been affected by the disease to hear the latest news direct from the source,” PCFA chief Associate Professor Anthony Lowe said.

“When a family is faced with a prostate cancer diagnosis, being exposed to the latest research can help put you in a better position to participate in decisions about treatment.

“The Community Conversations event in Brisbane will bring together researchers, members of the public and PCFA representatives to deliver information about prostate cancer from a range of perspectives.”

CONSIDERATIONS FOR ALZHEIMER’S THE services of Alzheimer’s Queensland (AQ) are based on the assessed holistic needs of each individual client including behaviours of clients with dementia.

In assessing these unique behaviours, AQ considers a set of general principles related to behaviours.

In the third and final part of its series, AQ explains what needs to be considered.

Consider the emotion when behaviour is being exhibited, for example, does the person appear anxious, sad, happy, angry, bored, agitated … AQ assessors and staff provide respectful acknowledgement of the emotional needs of both carers and the person with dementia.

Minimal restrictions are placed on the mobility or choice of the person with dementia.

Consider if there is a consistent time of day when the behaviour occurs. Experiences evoke memories or meaning for the person and AQ works to understand and interpret the demonstrated behaviour. We work with carers to prompt and increase awareness of possible

triggers related to behaviours.

Consider if the behaviour, such as wandering, always occurs in the same area.

AQ listens to the accounts from carers in relation to their experiences and their knowledge of the person with dementia to ensure assessment and intervention is accurate and there is timely response to changing needs.

Consider if the behaviour such as wandering outside the home is a high risk – often goes to door, tries to use handles and/ or follow others out and may get lost. AQ case managers and professional staff such as occupational therapists and an interior design manager work tirelessly to promote a safe living and social environment in all residential aged care facilities, multi-service centres and the homes of the clients.

Shopping for a better mood Most of us have experienced the positive feeling of a post-shopping rush but, writes clinical psychologist KATHRYN SMITH, there is a little bit of science behind the term “retail therapy”.

I

t’s exciting to have something new, so an improved mood during a shopping expedition means the brain releases oxytocin, making us feel happier, more relaxed and less stressed – although I wouldn’t go as far promoting it as formal therapy.

A recent study published in the Journal of Psychology and Marketing by researchers Selin Atalay and Margaret Meloy found that 62 per cent of shoppers had purchased something to cheer themselves up and another 28 per cent had purchased as a form of celebration.

Consumer behaviour is complex and has been studied for years, with many theories on why people are so obsessed with commodity and owning “things”.

We live in an age when we are judged on material things such as what car we drive, the type of clothes we wear and the size of our house, so it’s little wonder that the desire to own things is stronger than ever.

But retail therapy is more than just material desire. When practiced in moderation it can offer a range of therapeutic benefits, including socialisation, relaxation, boosting

self-confidence, stress relief and creative expression.

Researchers noted that people who are experiencing low mood are searching for greater control over their situation.

Shopping is their coping mechanism offering a controlled environment where they have a say over where they shop and what they purchase.

But is this a good thing?

Like everythng, moderation is the key.

As a psychologist I has seen the devastating effects of addictive behaviour. Although retail therapy can improve mood, there should be positive reasons for using it as an outlet.

Using shopping as a method of escape from reality that in turn results in credit card debt or financial stress, is counterproductive.

Signs to watch out for include; irritability after shopping, feelings of extreme guilt or hiding your purchases.

If you feel your shopping experiences are getting out of control, the first step is to acknowledge the problem and if required, seek professional help.

Nowhere Man, once called Orphan X, is a covert undercover agent for a secretive arm of the US government. What a rollicking great story. I enjoyed it from start to finish. There is a deftness, a slightly satirical touch which never descends into sensationalism. If you have an affinity for weaponry this will be right up your alley.

I don’t know one from another and learnt quite a bit. This is a vividly told tale with a moral tucked in there for the reader to find. Will this hero surpass the great James Bond?

“This book is one for the boys,” said my wife after a quick speed read. For once, I agree with Herself Indoors who is an inveterate reader and book club member. In the genre of Jason Bourne and Jack Reacher, this fast-paced action based novel, with one kill every 10 pages, offers nothing new and nothing brilliant. I found it a bit far-fetched but being one of the boys, also entertaining, engaging and enjoyable. The author writes well and makes you feel as if you are there and part of the action. The ending is a bit weak. One for the plane. 6/10

BOOK review JOHN KLEINSCHMIDT The Nowhere Man may have been more appealing had I read Orphan X, in which the author introduced Evan Smoak. Evan is a highly-trained assassin reinvented to help people in dire trouble. Unexpectedly, he finds himself in trouble, kidnapped and held captive in somewhat luxurious surroundings by Rene, a sadistic freak who has seemingly unlimited resources to subdue, contain and thwart many attempts to escape. Evan’s eventual escape, aided by his mentor and father figure, is a little far-fetched and rather drawn out compared to his revenge on Rene and saving a young girl destined to be enslaved in a foreign country. A passable read, but Evan doesn’t quite do it for me.

Loved this book, well written and a page turner from the beginning. Evan Smoak’s character is well developed and there are so many twists and turns that I was not sure that he would survive. Evan does pro bono work to help those desperately in need of his specialised services. The deal is, you call him, he solves your problem, then you have to give his number to someone else in need. Evan is kidnapped and becomes the captive. I found the book hard to put down as I was wanting to know what would happen next and how Evan was going to escape as the odds were so against him. I will definitely be reading more of Gregg Hurwitz’s books

MARY BARBER A powerful opening sets up this high voltage thriller. It’s a familiar tale – government-trained killer goes AWOL. Evan is carrying a lot of guilt and thinks he can settle the score by taking out lots of bad guys and helping people who are desperate and forgotten.

It has all the usual elements – fights, weapons, high tech surveillance, a love interest and Swiss bank accounts. But this thriller is a cut above the rest. Evan Smoak is a likeable hero who finds himself in a real bind. It’s an ideal airport book – the time will fly. Four and a half stars from me.

Ah good old blood and guts in a story told with frenetic pace – loved it!!

Early in the plot the good guy Evan Smoak is captured and faces the usual insurmountable odds to escape. Of course we all know Evan will win out in the end, but there’s enough sub plots and twists and turns to engage the reader and to whet our imagination to conjure up the often understated gory parts.

It wasn’t essential but I was pleased to have read the precursor “Orphan X” beforehand. Suffice to say that I have now reserved a few more novels by this excellent author at my local library. Definitely recommended.

Haval introduces an affordable SUV The Haval H6 is a Chinese-made, affordable sports utility and, writes BRUCE McMAHON, the most popular best-seller of its type in its home country.

H

ere, the Haval H6, may never usurp Mazdaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all-conquering CX-5 as Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most loved SUV but this latest offering from Great Wall, the makers of a range of Haval wagons, shows much improvement over previous contributions.

The front-wheel drive H6 now deserves some consideration if chasing a value-packed, decent-sized wagon.

It has landed in the middle of the most competitive segment in the Australian market â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the ever-growing medium SUV class thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s taking over from conventional sedans and wagons.

And it has a fair chance of attracting a reasonable audience.

First up, the Chinese SUV looks fine. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing in the Haval H6â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s style to frighten the neighbours; indeed many will be taken by the quiet and modern bodylines and this H6â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

Euro flavour.

Others may find the looks a bit too understated.

And this 4.6-metre long wagon offers good cabin space, from front seats to a decentsized cargo area. Rear seat accommodation is particularly decent for this class of fiveseater.

The driving position is well-sorted and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s little missing here in the way of driver aids, comforts and conveniences. If anything, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll take a fair week or two to learn

all the switches and controls.

Cabin ambience is fine, maybe a little overdone with one too many different â&#x20AC;&#x153;luxostyleâ&#x20AC;? surfaces and finishes but the Haval logo shining on the road when front doors open will impress bystanders.

Among standard safety gear is blind-spot monitoring, tyre pressure monitoring system and a rear camera (handy because rear vision is limited somewhat by the narrow back window, a common issue with that popular sloping rear roof design for

SUVs). Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a keyless entry with dashboard button for firing up the Havalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s turbocharged two-litre petrol engine.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s said to produce 145kW at 5300rpm and 315Nm of torque at 3000rpm and does appreciate being stirred for smarter getaways. It may be best to hit the Sport mode button which sharpens up throttle responses and allows for a sporting exhaust burp on gear changes through the six-speed auto.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a smooth pairing this motor and gearbox, maybe a bit too slinky, too linear sometimes.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where paddle-shifters help out for more defined gear changes to satisfy a dedicated driver, though remember the official fuel consumption figure is 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres, a tad high in this day and age.

The H6 rides well enough and sits on handsome Cooper A/T tyres. But this rubber â&#x20AC;&#x201C; hard-wearing it may be â&#x20AC;&#x201C; doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give as much as may be

appreciated for comfort or traction.

At low speeds around the town thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s some pitter-patter from the front wheels feeding back through the steering and the wagonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grip, in particular on wet surfaces, can be found wanting.

But maybe no-one is about to take the Haval H6 around the Lakeside circuit anytime this weekend.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s here is a reasonable wagon at reasonable prices â&#x20AC;&#x201C; $29,990 and $33,990 for the Lux version â&#x20AC;&#x201C; backed by a five-year/100,000km warranty and five-year roadside assistance.

The Haval H6 is arguably the best of Chinese auto products available today.

It may lack the polish of some rivals but it also, with all the standard gear taken into account, lacks some of those rivalsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; price tags.

The unknowns are reliability and resale values.

Mono Audio is great for people with deafness in one ear, so instead of playing recordings with distinct left and right channel which is used for stereo, you can play the same audio channels in both ears.

Switch Control is an amazing app for those with motor skill issues. It allows you to operate your Mac without touching a mouse or keyboard. You can navigate through onscreen

keyboards, menus and the dock using a variety of switch options, paired with mobility devices such as a joystick.

Dwell Control is also outstanding as it allows you to use head or eye tracking hardware to move the cursor and select or drag onscreen items.

There are many more features to explore such as sticky keys, onscreen keyboard, Siri and dictation. If you own a Mac, I would suggest going through some of these settings and try each out to see which suit your needs.

Good neighbours will be on watch Living alone, independent yet frail and ageing, is a dangerous business but, writes RUSSELL HUNTER, the alternatives can be worse.

F

iercely independent though he was, that old man should never have been living alone. He couldn’t even get up once he’d fallen down.

He lived in a small unit over our back fence and we’d see him occasionally, glass eye and battered bush hat, shuffling around his small yard.

We never saw him out of there and never spoke to him. He kept himself to himself.

That was until he fell down.

My work regularly keeps me well into the night and so it wasn’t unusual for me to wander into the spare room at 11pm. I think I was looking for batteries.

But that was immediately forgotten after I sighted our neighbour on his floor behind the (fortunately) open door although the fly screen door was closed.

A feeble arm flapped against the wire from time to time.

He was trying to attract attention which in itself would have invoked in him a deep sense of shame. He was such a private person.

I called triple-0 and spoke with a patient and understanding ambulance dispatcher who said he would send a team but meanwhile could I go and see

what assistance I could give – in fact just let him know help was on the way and he wasn’t alone.

Of course I could.

“But your guys will get there before I do,” I told him.

That’s because the high back fence (you wouldn’t see him from our downstairs) was unscaleable, certainly for my age and fitness level.

No, I explained, my wife and I would have to walk to the end of our road, take two left turns and return on the parallel road to get to his flat.

As predicted, the ambos got there first. They were doing the things they do but one found time to thank us and let us know he’d be OK. “We’ll take him to hospital and they’ll likely keep him for observation a couple of days”.

So he was back that week. With a pair of wheeled walkers, one outside and one in the flat. They looked dangerous to me. I don’t think he used them much.

On our next contact with him was when he’d fallen while sweeping out his yard. Again, from my small upstairs office (I work from home) I could see his arms flailing pathetically as he struggled to get

himself upright. This time my wife did the walk and got him on his feet. He thanked her profusely and returned to sweeping.

Perhaps a week later we heard the noise as the police broke into his home.

It seemed the care worker assigned to him had been unable to raise him for her weekly or whatever visit and feared the worst.

But he was certainly alive when they got him out and into the waiting

An older woman who may well have been a relative (but had to our knowledge never visited there before) did spend a day clearing out his things.

There were letters, documents, maybe photographs, taken away in large plastic bags.

I mentioned the experience to a chap I met at a function, as a conversation

starter. It turned out he was a pastor in one of those new churches.

Thankfully I didn’t get a harangue about the need to repent etc as the end was nigh, but he did say he did a lot of work with old people, a surprising number of whom were technically homeless.

The hospitals, he said, had more old people as in-patients than they cared to admit.

“They’re not there because they’re sick but because they have nowhere to go,” he said.

“Quite often the hospitals can’t bring themselves to turn them out. That’s where people like us try to help. But it’s always too little.”

He hoped, as did I, that our neighbour had found a home though he added, quite matter-of-factly that it may not be in this world.

We never did get our neighbour’s name.

SUNNYBANK THEATRE GROUP PRESENTS COMPELLING DRAMA

TWELVE Angry Men, written in 1954 by screenwriter and playwright Reginald Rose, won the Award for Outstanding Drama in 1955 and now this intriguing production is back as the Sunnybank Theatre Group’s latest production.

Some will remember it being made into a black and white movie in 1957 inspired by and starring Henry Fonda among other big names in cinema.

Set in the early 1950s in New York, it remains a humane and highly efficient piece of theatre, but shows its age presenting us with an all-male, all-white jury (perfectly plausible in the ’50s).

adapted for the London stage in 1964, set in one room, one day, 12 men deliberating over sending a 16-year-old AfroAmerican boy, accused of killing his father, to the electric chair.

The evidence sounds solid, but Shaw, as Juror 8 (they all go nameless), has spotted flaws. His numerous reasonable doubts punch holes in the case, worming through the minds, and occasionally hearts, of fellow jurors.

Directors Pam Cooper and Lesley Davis guide the action sure-handedly, the actors roaming around the room, keeping things fluid and presenting an ever-changing

perspective – what the men must feel is suddenly playing out inside their heads, once Juror 8 starts turning over the case.

Audiences will be captivated by this compelling drama and the fascinating way the writer draws us into the lives of a family, whose suburban domesticity is confronted with such an intense situation.

ust over an hour’s drive north of Brisbane, Caloundra, at the gateway to the Sunshine Coast, ranks up there among some of the world’s favourite tropical holiday destinations.

Although I’m no stranger to Caloundra, it had been a few years – actually, many years – since my last visit, so a mid-week holiday beckoned as the perfect chance to renew auld acquaintance while enjoying a beach break.

It turned into a holiday escape into a part of the world that has been blessed by Mother Nature and enhanced by a new sophistication that didn’t come at the cost of its down-home hospitality.

So, I booked into Pumicestone Blue in Bulcock St, and for the next 48 hours let Caloundra work its magic.

I soon discovered that I could have an international experience at home.

WEDNESDAY 2pm: Check-in to luxury apartment on the 9th floor of Pumicestone Blue. Pause to admire the stunning views of Pumicestone Passage and the waves rolling in over the Caloundra Bar, framed by Norfolk pines and the northern tip of Bribie Island. A

container ship looks close enough to touch as it edges up the coastline, moving surprisingly quickly before it passes out of the picture. I get my bearings from the 12th floor roof garden which has views up and down Bulcock St but best of all, the Glass House Mountains lurking on the horizon, an unparalleled backdrop by any measure. The best spot to see them is while lounging in the infinity pool or one of the spas.

3pm: Too easy to be lazy. Time to get moving. I cross Bulcock St and head down to the Esplanade, to join the Coastal Pathway for a saunter along the waterfront. The air is fresh, the water is clear and gentle, the path is pretty. Life is as it should be.

3.30pm: In an open and airy space at Esplanade level of the Rumba Beach Resort I discover Blend Hair and Spa. Time for a touch of Bali, a massage. Choose your oils and massage style and let Jeanette do the rest. She is friendly and helpful and has a magic touch. I’m wishing I had allowed more time for this as Blend is just that, a blend of a hairdresser, beautician (manicures and pedicures) and massage in a spacious salon with three quite separate areas. It’s everything you need to while away an afternoon with a bit of self-indulgence. And

they look after the menfolk as well, unless, of course, they are out with a fishing rod.

5.30pm: Time for a quick change and it’s up to the roof garden for champagne as the sun sets over the Glass House Mountains and the lights turn on in Caloundra giving a whole new perspective to that magnificent view.

7pm: Dinner. An evening stroll down the street and around the corner leads to Alife’s Moo Char Bar, the fine dining establishment of Alfie Langer and his wife Janine. I spot a framed Australian rugby league jersey hanging on the wall – yes, it’s that Alfie and he’s usually there to greet his guests and have a yarn (although this is a rare occasion when he’s not in). The menu is enticing and the small plates are a good opportunity to sample a few of the flavours – from barbecue duck with crispy pastry and sand crab with green mango and coconut salad to baby back ribs in Irish Guinness and waffle potatoes and popcorn chicken with roast beetroot, it’s a tempting list. The Langers look after the details themselves so there’s a definite personal touch to it all.

THURSDAY: 7am: Up for an early swim at Bulcock Beach after a pleasant stroll beside the waters of Pumicestone Passage. Home to shower and then another stroll around the corner to the Paleo Place where a touch of

Tuscany awaits in its ambient setting with a fruitful passionfruit vine wrapping around the rails and, overhead, an old bicycle slung on the wall, all in what would have been the front garden of an original house. The food is good too and as the name suggests, there are plenty of choices to cater for sugar, dairy or gluten free and vegan but sausages and bacon too of course. There are coconut pancakes, a vegetable stack, fruit salad, eggs in all forms and paleo bread topped with fresh kale in lemon garlic and avocado. Yum! Being mid-week there is a generous discount going as well.

9am: The car comes out of its secure covered carpark for the first time to head down to the Pelican Waters dock for a 9.30am departure on Caloundra Cruise’s Eco-Explorer heading down the Passage through the marine park. Binoculars are provided so even if you’re not an avid birdwatcher, you can’t help but become engaged. An informative book shows what species to be looking out for – cormorants, spoonbills, black swans, and raptors for starters - and gives a brief history of the area as well.

We cruise past Military Jetty and the World War II gun emplacements and the enthusiastic guide, Sandy, shares her knowledge of the waterway, its history and its inhabitants (did you know the Bribie Island pine is borer-resistant so was used for palings on the oyster farms here? Or that Matthew Flinders named it the Pumicestone River in 1790?)

At Lighthouse Reach on the northern end of Bribie Island we drop anchor for a morning tea of freshly baked bikkies and fruit, perfect for the location. A brahminy kite flies overhead, reminding me of a trip to Langkawi in Malaysia where it is the national bird. The silence is broken only by the music of the birds and the lapping water.

Having a relatively low attention-span the thought of a river cruise usually scares me, but there is so much to see here there’s not even time for a snooze. 2pm: Hmm, it’s a hard call after a tough morning out and about. Do I make an expedition down Bulcock St to check out the local shops, head down for a swim and an afternoon on the beach, go up to the roof for a swim and a spa or relax on my private balcony with a book for a nanna nap.

6pm: Early dinner as tonight’s the theatre. Shirley Valentine is in Caloundra on its national tour and it’s one-night only.

Perfect timing. The Events Centre is another stroll up the street – I’ve now officially walked north, south, east and west and find everything at the doorstep – and it regularly has big-name acts and performances so without having to worry about parking, it’s a good chance to catch a show. Dinner is an international choice Nepal, India, Mexico, China, Italy, the US … in the end I settle for Thailand.

FRIDAY: 9am: Time to head home, but one last treat before turning south. Coffee Cat is only a 1.5km coastal walk from town but the car’s packed so I swing over to King’s Beach to have breakfast so dangerously close to the beach that I can hear the breakers crashing on the sand. Sitting in the shade of the pandanus I watch the swimmers and surfers while browsing a menu of fresh fruits, lemon and poppy seed pancakes and corn and chorizo fritters before settling on an acai bowl, an old favourite and this one is up there with the best I’ve had. I could be on the Med in Spain or the south of France.

While I feel like I have really been on adventure away, it’s a short trip home and the only regret is that it couldn’t have been longer. Next time, a mid-week stay will need those extra couple of days.
