A

s I may have mentioned about this time last year, I’m not much of a one for New Year resolutions.

I have enough to worry about without setting myself up for failure with unrealistic expectations, which new year resolutions inevitably become. That’s pragmatic rather than glass half-empty.

That said, there’s no harm in aspiring to do better and I hope that this might be the year I really do manage to shed a few pounds, walk more often, get up earlier and all those other things that have never come naturally to me. I might also carry out my threat to downsize to a van and head off on a year-long trip around Australia. And pigs might fly.

Enough! That’s ambitious enough for now. However, there are many among us who do actually manage to pull off

Contents long-held ambitions and as Julie Lake writes in this month’s cover story, retirement presents an excellent opportunity to pursue the dreams.

Write that book, learn to play the piano, build the garden, put the photos in albums, research the family history ... it’s all possible. Little wonder it’s a recurring theme among retirees that they don’t know how they ever managed to fit in time for fulltime employment.

I can’t help but admire those who have the self-discipline to make their resolutions a reality. As the German poet Johann Goethe wrote, “thinking is easy, acting is difficult and to put one’s thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world”.

I currently have some friends visiting from the UK and while here, they are celebrating their 78th and 83rd birthdays respectively. When they said a couple of years back they were planning a trip Down Under, I secretly scoffed. I mean, who plans a 15,000km journey years in advance when you’re 80? Well, they did it and this just might be the year I finally get my act together too. Good luck for a satisfying and rewarding 2017.

Repurposing not retirement - this is your time It’s not so many years since stopping work meant a gold watch and post-employment years spent playing bowls, pottering in the garden or watching daytime television. But now, writes JULIE LAKE, it’s the opportunity to pursue all those things you have always wanted to do.

any of today’s retirees have much higher expectations than living the quiet life and regard retirement not as the end of useful life but a chance to reinvent themselves and find new purpose.

Take Jill Garnett for example. She left full-time employment at 58 to write a book. It sold reasonably well and today she is the author of nine books still in print.

When she discovered how little money authors received for their work she began her own online self-publishing business, purchasing a domain and using a webhost company.

Today she uses the Amazon platform, where authors can benefit from that company’s sophisticated selling and marketing programs.

Jill also studied palaeontology and spent several years looking for fossils and working on dinosaur digs in western Queensland. The best fossil in her collection is 370 million years old, found in an old gravel quarry.

Jill’s other retirement interests include studying – and teaching – Japanese, working on citizen science projects and playing the ukulele.

“I turned 70 last year,” Jill says, “And I can honestly say that these have been the best years of my life. It’s wonderful to have the time to finally do all the things I always wanted to do – and a few I never even thought of doing! I want to be a participant in the game of life, not just an onlooker!”

Retired nurse Brenda Quaife, too, has been playing the ukulele for a couple of years and belongs to a group that gives occasional public

performances in her local community.

She has also joined a singing group and plans to learn the dulcimer.

Ukuleles, it turns out, are the most popular musical instruments among older people who have never played a musical instrument before, and uke groups can be found all around southeast Queensland.

Some retirees (or should that be repurposers?), however, are prepared to tackle tougher challenges and are proving that you can, in fact, teach an old dog new tricks.

Heather Nel of The School Locker music studios has been teaching students to play various instruments for 30 years.

Her oldest student is an 81-year-old former trumpeter who recently decided to take up the saxophone.

Another of her students started learning the piano at 74 and went on to pass three music exams.

Heather says that with older people it’s about learning and sharing knowledge rather than teaching.

Exercise techniques can be developed to help overcome any deficiencies of age, such as stiff fingers.

“Older people have more intuition (than the young) when it comes to learning music,” Heather says.

For many, it has proved life changing, mentally stimulating and physically uplifting.

Besides music – and excluding sport – art, craft and writing are the most popular pursuits for retirees.

Journalist Glenis Green gave up full-time reporting but still does some casual subediting from her home computer – when she’s not at her easel.

something purely visual rather than computer-orientated,” says Glenis who had been interested in painting since winning a school art prize.

She took it up again when her adult children bought her paints and an easel two Christmases ago.

Another artist, Patricia Stockwell, combines her love of painting with a love of plants to produce botanical art as exquisite as it is accurate in detail.

To achieve this level of expertise she has spent the past dozen or so years taking every botanical art course she can find, learning from Australia’s leading plant painters.

The advent of Amazon’s selfpublishing platform six years ago has made it possible for many would-be writers to publish their work in either print-on-demand or ebook format.

But Jill Garnett warns it is not a licence to print money.

“There is a lot of self-indulgent rubbish out there and you need to invest some money in promotion both on and off-line if you want to actually sell your books. And narrowly-targeted markets are the best,” she says.

Birdwatching is another popular interest among retirees and with southeast Queensland’s rich birdlife, there are several local groups as well as state and national organisations with sophisticated communications programs to engage the binocular brigade.

Citizen science projects, in which people with sufficient time to spare can engage in bird and other wildlife surveys and monitoring projects, are today attracting participants from all around Australia.

Jeff and Marg Eller sold their plumbing supply business about 10 years ago and, having become interested in birdwatching, turned it into an almost full-time interest.

Peace of mind at a great price

Dr Jaap Vogel, 62, has been flat out travelling inland Australia and writing since retiring.

They are the mainstay of their local bird group, travel all over Australia looking for unusual birds and are even involving their grandchildren in their favourite hobby.

While Marg does the sound-recording Jeff has become a proficient bird photographer, creating sophisticated video productions with appropriate backing music and special effects.

Those who want a little more excitement in their retirement years than improving their golf handicap, throwing in a line or joining a bridge club, take the opportunity to travel.

While most are content to visit the places they’ve always wanted to see, others turn it to more significant account.

Jaap Vogel trained as a doctor and became a science writer specialising in medical matters. He is also an artist working in more than one media whose

exhibited works range from metal sculpture to photographic art.

While in his 50s, he was diagnosed with leukaemia. His response was to buy a large bus which he named The Spirit of Curiosity and do something he’d long wanted to do – travel around inland Australia.

During his three-year trip he took an interest in Aboriginal culture and social problems, turning it into a book, Wake Up Time and doing volunteer work in two Northern Territory museums.

Now 62, and settled back in southeast Queensland, he has recently published another book, a natural history photo essay called Green Island in the Sky. This has received some financial support from his local community and also features photos of works by other nature-connected artists.

The leukaemia has returned and

thanks to his medical knowledge, Jaap realistically faces the fact that his latest, very expensive treatment, suppresses the symptoms rather than offers a cure.

“It can’t change the quantity of my life but it can change the quality,” he says, and as long as that quality lasts he will make each day count, especially when it comes to doing his bit for the preservation of southeast Queensland’s natural environment.

Brenda Quaife sums it up nicely when she says that during her years of nursing and raising children she never had time for the things she enjoys now, such as yoga, walking and, of course, music.

She quotes a poem by her mother, who lived to three months short of 100 and had a happy and active life to the end: “Dream what you want to dream, Go where you want to go Be who you want to be Because you only have one life and one chance to do all the things that you want to do”.

BEWARE THE DEAL THAT’S TOO GOOD THE Australian Federal Police (AFP) is warning investors to be cautious after a fraudulent investment scam, or Ponzi, was found to be targeting Australians.

The AFP began investigating an illegal Ponzi scheme after receiving information from the FBI in the US in June last year and identified a company called Options Rider operating in Australia.

It promised a large, risk-free return on investment. Returns were paid to initial investors from new money paid to the organisers by new investors, rather than from profit earned. There is no real investment and eventually the new investors dry up, as does the money.

Participants risk losing their money and also potentially face legal action.

The AFP has identified and restrained more $8 million in 37 different bank accounts around Australia. AFP Criminal

Assets, Fraud and Anti-Corruption manager Peter Crozier said any scheme with a suspiciously high rate of return, or that claims to have software which will do the trading and generate money should be questioned.

“Unfortunately people can fall for Ponzi schemes due to the promise of getting rich quickly. It’s best summed up in the old adage that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” he said.

Warning signs of a Ponzi scheme: • Suspiciously high rate of return • The person who tries to recruit you is someone you think is trustworthy • The recruiter may have already invested in the scheme and received great dividends • The investment rewards you for referring others.

The scammer’s main objective is to get your money. They usually ask for payment via wire money transfer or iTunes cards.

To push victims into paying this money, the scammer might threaten that there will be no further benefits until the situation is resolved.

“The Department of Human Services will never ask you to deposit money in order to receive a payment,” Ms Rickard said. “If in doubt, don’t use any contact details provided by the caller. Look up the government department or organisation yourself and phone or email them.”

MERITON ACCUSED OF TAMPERING WITH REVIEWS The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has instituted proceedings in the Federal Court against Meriton Serviced Apartments, alleging that from November 2014 to October 2015, Meriton took steps to prevent guests it suspected would give a negative review from receiving TripAdvisor’s “Review Express” email to avoid them posting potentially negative reviews.

It is alleged that this was done by

CENTRELINK SCAMMERS ON THE PROWL THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is warning the community to be aware of phone calls from scammers pretending to be from the Department of Human Services or Centrelink.

The ACCC’s Scamwatch has received more than 2200 reports of this scam since January, with more than $27,000 reported lost. Four individuals have reported losses of $1000 or more.

“If, out of the blue, you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Department of Human Services or Centrelink and claiming that you are eligible for an increase in your pension or benefit, hang up,” the ACCC’s Delia Rickard said. “The scammer will claim that you’ve been sent a letter about an increase in your benefits and not

inserting additional letters into guests’ email addresses provided to TripAdvisor so that the email addresses were ineffective, and not sending other guest email addresses to TripAdvisor.

“Consumers rely on independent review platforms like Trip Advisor when making purchasing decisions,” the ACCC said. Consumer group Choice said a one-way tide of positive reviews could be a sign something was amiss.

OUT WITH PRE-SELECTED EXTRAS FOR AIRLINE BOOKINGS VIRGIN Australia has stopped preselection of travel insurance on its online booking platform following discussions with the ACCC. Its customers will no longer have to “de-select” travel insurance if they do not wish to purchase it but rather, select if they want it.

The ACCC has been concerned that the “opt-out” model means that a number of consumers inadvertently end up paying for unwanted “pre-ticked” extras.

Jetstar has since advised it plans to stop preselection on baggage, seat selection, travel insurance and charity donations from July 1, next year.

Letters I liked the sentence in Watch Your Language in Your Time (Nov) which illustrated the use of four “hads” in succession.

Two of my favourites, which I’ve used to show off my knowledge ever since I was a young teacher in the 1950s, were used to keep the good kids quiet while the others finished a task.I’d ask them to punctuate the following: Tom where Jim had had had had had had had had had had had the teacher’s approval.

If they got that, I’d add the next punctuation test: That that is is that that is not is not is that it it is.

Peter Beard I hope the article about my wonderful experience with karate in Your Time (Dec) dispels some of the misconceptions many people have about it being too physical, perhaps too violent and, at best, a sporting activity for the young only.

I was infuriated by the lack of insight into the rescue dog and want to take the writer to task.Firstly, I agree that puppies should not be given as Christmas presents. Many of them are being treated

like a disposable piece of rubbish. Throw it away as soon as you tire of it.

You shouldn’t be talking about the BAD rescue dogs but rather the type of people who go out and adopt the rescue dogs, then expect the poor things to just conform to a way of life.

You should not purchase any dog (rescue or not) only to leave it alone all day in the backyard and go off to work, come home, feed the thing, take it for a walk if it’s lucky and then expect it to be happy. I agree that most, if not all (and I am no expert on that subject) of these rescue animals suffer from PTSD. Surely with a lot of love and patience, training and care you can transform the lives of these sweet little things. Would your suggestion be that we euthanase all the animals in shelters everywhere?

It would be better to work on getting laws passed to prevent people who continually abuse animals from ever owning an animal again. Not once did you mention the benefits of a dog for the old, lonely and housebound. There are no BAD dogs only BAD owners.

I own a rescue dog, beaten to within an inch of her life, starved to less than half her body weight, left to die in a locked house in the middle of summer

with no food or water. She’s a ray of sunshine in a cruel, heartless world.

If you are so worried about your neighbour’s barking dog perhaps you could offer to babysit it once in a while.

June Young I’d like to congratulate you on another fine year in publishing, a feat that cannot be extended to many of your contemporaries.

Too many exhibit laziness in their publications and the malaise extends to the electronic media as well. I feel that there is too much emphasis on social media at the expense of the legitimate one. Too many spelling mistakes which change the whole meaning, eg barrister instead of barista.

As regards the electronic variety, perhaps David Parmiter may like to write an article about the demise of the English language, particularly the elimination of two letters of the alphabet – t and k. You now hear Toyoda, twenny and thirdy as examples and the letter k is pronounced gay. That’s my whinge for 2016 and may 2017 be a good one.

Vow to keep speakers and writers on their toes

GOOD ONE, GRANDPA!

Time for New Year’s resolutions and DAVID PARMITER writes that he has made one that he intends to keep.

R

I

resolve this year to watch my language. Fat chance, given that almost nobody these days takes much care or pride in what they say or how they say it.

But I’m from the old school, so here goes.

These days, unwillingly “retired” and apparently past my use-by date, I am writing for you.

And I am still passionate about our language; about the correct use of words, correct grammar and proper pronunciation and enunciation by our broadcasters.

So let’s watch their language and make their New Year’s resolutions for them. May they also become ours.

We resolve to stop saying “There’s lots of ways ...”, “today there’s less people ...”, “there’s many things you can do ...”.

Whatever happened to correct subject-verb agreement that Mrs Teacher drummed into you in Year 4? The TV ads may be written by the illiterati but you do not have to copy them.

“Now, there’s lots more reasons than ever” to get your grammar correct (sorry!).

Plurals demand “there are ...”, not “there is” and the word “lots” is redundant when you have more reasons already.

We resolve to pronounce the letter “t”.

“The Beadles” were Mr and Mrs Bumble in Oliver Twist so why don’t you call the pop group the BeaTles?

Why do we turn a central consonant “t” into a “d”? Why can’t we pronounce “matter”, “butter” and “little” with the double-t that is there, instead of lazily using the double-d?

And “wanna” is just the sloppy, lazy way of saying “want to”.

“It’s getting so much beTTer all the time”, as Paul McCartney correcTly sang it. So watch your Ts. We resolve to engage brain before mouth.

We resolve never again to use “umm”, “yeah”, “like” in any sentence or use phrases such as “she goes”, “she’s like” or “yeah, like, I’m like” four times in every utterance.

We also resolve not to say “amazing”, “no way or “whadever”!

We will show that we think before we garble, and that our vocabulary is more than just grunts and monosyllables.

In shops, cafes and pubs we resolve not to say “er, I’ll grab a pie, I jus’ wanna beer, gimme a pot.”

We will remember “please may I have

...” and “thank you”, just as if Mum was listening, with a backhander ready if we forgot our manners.

Watch morning television with a notepad on your lap. Note the ridiculous speed at which the presenters speak.

Tick the box every time they fumble, read the autocue wrongly or mispronounce everyday words.

Not one of them watches their language ... or cares if you miss it.

“Watch morning television with a notepad on your lap” They show complete disregard for their audience (you!) by their ignorance, incompetence and lack of respect for the English language.

They are a turn-off, so resolve just to turn them off! (Note: no split infinitive, “to just turn off”!)

So I want us to start 2017 by making this our group New Year resolution: “we resolve to annoy and nag the journalists, media presenters and the general public to bloodywell speak and write properly, and to Watch Your Language.”

Now we’re told Australian school students are falling behind in maths and science so maybe we need a successor to Digit Dick. Why not Digit Al? But back to learning by rote. Was it all that bad? Yes, you’d have to be well through your three score years and ten to recall those dreary hours of sing-song repetition of the times table.

And yes, I hated that daily routine, especially when the teacher interrupted my day-dreaming, pointed at me and barked, “Richardson, six sevens are… ”.

Eventually though, the relentless repetition filed this and all the other times tables so permanently that even now, some 80 years later, I don’t need a calculator, smart phone, or the latest gizmo to calculate my grocery bill.

Just about every form of communication technology is being rapidly superseded as Silicon Valley comes up with the latest digital breakthrough and, as we all grow older and less able to keep up with change, surely there is opportunity for another super hero. Digit Al could well be the next to come to our aid.

Dependency a two-way street

A

ustralians believe that parents and their adult children have an obligation to support each other practically and financially, according to research by the Australian Institute of Family Studies.

Institute director Anne Hollonds said Australians supported allowing adult children to live in the family home, but were less inclined to have ageing parents come to live with the family.

Ms Hollonds said 63 per cent of Australians believed that parents should allow adult children to live with them if they needed a roof over their heads.

“Within families there’s a recognition that intergenerational support is a two-way street – both for young people finding their feet but also for older family members who are becoming frail and in need of informal care,” she said.

However that obligation does not extend to widespread support for adult children having their ageing parents come to live with them.

Less than half of the study respondents agreed that adult children should let ageing parents live with them in cases of need.

Older people themselves were also squarely against the idea, with the over 65s the least in favour of ageing parents

having to live in the homes of their adult children.

The research found 60 per cent of Australians believed that parents should provide financial support to their adult children if they were in difficulty.

And if the situation was reversed, 64 per cent of Australians said that adult children should return the favour and provide financial support to their parents.

“Older people’s relative wealth and extended years of good health suggest many have an increased capacity to support their adult children in financial and practical ways,” Ms Hollonds said.

“This inter-generational exchange of time and resources appears to be happening in line with the changing needs of young adults. More young adults are remaining or returning to the parental home and many grandparents are caring for grandchildren on a weekly basis.”

The study confirmed stronger commitment to inter-generational support among Australians born overseas. Migrants from non-English speaking countries tend to place more reliance on family support than help from outside agencies and 65 per cent said that adult children should let their ageing parents live with them.

hazard alert has been issued for components used in metal-onmetal (MoM) hip implants.

Microport Orthopedics, in consultation with the TGA, issued the hazard alert due to the increasing revision rate identified overseas since 2009.

It said there had been few users in Australia and the rate of revision in this country had been low.

In MoM hip implants the two moving surfaces in the joint are both made of metal.

There is a growing body of evidence that because the two moving parts of a MoM hip implant wear against each other they can release trace amounts of cobalt and chromium into the patient’s body.

Young mum finds her place is in history For more than half a century Diana Hacker has been making history. DOT WHITTINGTON talks to the longest-serving member of the QWHA.

W

hen she was a young wife with a small baby, Diana Hacker was told by her mum that she had to do something useful with her time and given two options.

“I was 23 and my mother told me, ‘now that you are a married woman you should look to joining some erstwhile association like the CWA or the QWHA’.

She happened to be a member of both,” Diana says.

“I had always liked geography and history so I chose the Queensland Women’s Historical Association.”

That was 52 years ago, in 1964 – just 14 years after the group was founded in 1950. Diana will be 75 next month and she is now the longest-serving member of the QWHA, although by only one year.

These days she is an archivist and a committee member although 52 years has given her the opportunity to hold a variety of roles in the organisation, which is based at the historic home Miegunyah in Bowen Hills.

Her participation in a group dedicated to researching and preserving Queensland history, and in particular the contribution of women to the state’s development, has only increased with time. When she first joined she had a

“For the first few years I was busy with the babies but once I got them off to school I could go to the lectures that really appealed to me,” she says. “By then it was the mid-‘70s and we had moved from Newstead where the QWHA was founded at Newstead House, to Miegunyah in Bowen Hills which it bought in 1966.”

QWHA members were busy returning the historic home, which had been divided into three flats in 1947, to its

early glory. Members were building and cleaning, developing the museum inside it and running a regular lecture program as well as organising all sorts of fundraisers to pay for it all.

These were the good times, when the membership was just on 1000. Today, with a changing society, numbers have dropped to under 200.

When her children were “well and truly off my hands” Diana’s participation increased and she served a year as president, worked on the alterations and then found her niche in the archives.

“From the start, Miegunyah was like a

second home to me,” Diana says. “I don’t have a bed there but, by crikey, sometimes I have almost needed it.”

And her work does go home too. She has her own filing cabinets jammed with notes and bits and pieces.

The amateur historian, “I don’t have any letters after my name”, works on keeping records in order, does research to expand the records and is always looking for stories about Queensland women, past and present, to keep their stories alive. Her crowning achievement has been producing three volumes titled The Matildas, collections of stories about women that she has found in the archives, through her own research, or picked up from other members.

Her current project is putting together the life stories of all the women who have lived at Miegunyah. After 52 years, Diana has no regrets about her choice after her mother’s ultimatum.

“I have never had any doubts it was right for me. At first because I was so much younger than the others.

Gradually I have become the senior member and a lot of newer ones have to come and ask me about things,” she says.

“I still love it as much as ever, probably more now because I have the time.”

Dancing around but with scant support Members of the Society of Women Writers Queensland have plenty of tales to tell. This month, it’s a short story by 80-year-old BARBARA BUFI.

“D

o you have to make such a racket this early?” Kath’s face was grumpy. She pulled out a chair and flopped at the kitchen table.

“Hello to you too,” Mark laughed, and resumed his story about the dance, not bothered by his sister’s bad mood.

“You should have seen it, Mum. At first nobody knew what was up until their feet started getting tangled up as they danced. In minutes they had circulated around the dance floor.

Everybody just broke up as they realised what had happened. You must’ve seen them too, Kath.”

“Of course I saw them,” snapped his sister. “Everyone saw them! How you can think it’s funny I don’t know. Laughing at somebody else’s misfortune – you’re really gross, Mark.”

Mary passed a mug of tea across the table to her daughter.

“Here love. I know we shouldn’t laugh, but you have to admit, all those dancers getting tangled up in a pair of abandoned undies is funny.”

“We all thought so,” Mark choked out.

“This reminds me of Aunty Lola,” Mary said. “I’m sure I’ve told you this story before, Kath. I was about your age

then, and Aunt Lola was getting on a bit.

“She had to go down to Brisbane on the train and Mum and Dad asked me to go with her. It ended up being a nice trip, she was good company; liked a joke and didn’t mind a little drink, so we had a ball.

“When we got into Roma Street station I helped her off and collected our luggage. I steered the trolley around the heaps of sheets and towels the cleaners were throwing out of the sleepers on to the platform. Suddenly Aunty Lola stumbled and grabbed my arm.

“I looked around just in time to see her step out of a pair of pink scanties and kick them onto the nearest pile of bedding.”

“Scanties? What the hell are scanties?”

Mark interrupted.

“They’re ladies’ old-fashioned undies with sort of floaty flared legs, Mark. They were all the go then, long before today’s bikinis and thongs!

“Anyway, Lola hissed at me ‘Just keep walking Mary, don’t look back!’ and that’s what we did. We walked away up the platform as if that embarrassing garment had nothing to do with us.

“She was a quick thinker, old Lola. Not many people would have had the presence of mind to react that fast when

their elastic failed.”

“You’d think elastic would have improved since those days,” Mark snorted. His cackling was contagious, and Mary was soon giggling helplessly too.

Kath looked disgusted. She pushed her chair back and marched out of the kitchen. They heard her bedroom door slam, which sent Mark into gales of laughter again.

“Stop it Mark! You can see Kath’s really upset. Here, you stack the dishes, I’d better go and see if she’s OK.” Mary could hear muffled noises through the door. “Can I come in love?”

Kath was face down on the bed, shoulders heaving.

“What on earth’s the matter, Kath?

What’s upset you so much?”

Kath sat up, eyes streaming.

“Shut the door, Mum,” she hiccuped.

“I don’t want Mark to hear. I’ll die if he finds out!”

Mary suddenly realised. “Kathleen Mary! You’re laughing! What’s going on?”

“Oh Mum, can’t you guess? Those were my knickers last night at the dance!”

She dissolved again, squeezing the words out around giggles.

“When I felt them sliding down,

Aunty Lola flashed into my mind.

Keep your cool, I thought, so I just kept on dancing…”

“But your partner must’ve noticed…”

“He didn’t see a thing. I didn’t miss a beat, just kicked the knickers sideways and they were shuffled along the floor in a flash. I kept right on talking, gazed up into Frank’s eyes, and sort of steered us gently in the other direction.”

“You mean nobody saw them drop?”

“Not a soul, Mum. Who looks down when they’re dancing? By the time people were looking to see what was getting tangled in their feet I was safely on the other side of the floor, looking suitably innocent, wondering what was going on, just like everybody else.

Nobody suspected a thing.”

“Great presence of mind, love, it must run in the family. Aunty Lola would’ve been proud. It’s a pity we can’t tell your brother how quick witted you were, but your secret’s safe with me.”

Mary started to laugh again and hugged Kath tightly.

“Listen, you’d better sneak out and get the sewing basket. I’ll help you check the elastic in the rest of your knickers. You mightn’t be so lucky next time.”

Summer is well and truly here and whether entertaining or keeping the heat out of the kitchen, it’s easy to keep your cool using just four ingredients.

Serves 4

JERK CHICKEN WITH MANGO SALSA

• 250g vanilla bean Greek yoghurt

Serves 4

FROSTY FRUITS

• 12 blueberries

SWEET SALMON AND SUMMER CORN SALAD

• 12 raspberries Spoon a teaspoon of yoghurt into each hole of 2 x 12-hole ice cube trays.

(Each recipe Serves 2)

Place 1 blueberry in each of the holes of one tray, and 1 raspberry in each of the holes of the other tray.

Divide the remaining yoghurt between each of the holes, making sure to completely cover the berries.

Place in the freezer for 4 hours or until set. Pop out of the trays and store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 1 month.

BEFORE

• ½ lime (35g), juice and grated zest • 1 tablespoon (25g) raw honey • 2 x 150g salmon steaks Combine the lime juice, a little zest and honey in a small bowl. Add the salmon and coat well. Marinate for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180oC. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Transfer the salmon to the lined tray and brush with any remaining marinade. Roast for 20 minutes or until it flakes easily with a fork.

(CORN SALAD) • 1 x 200g corn cob, husk on • 1 large zucchini (300g), cubed • ½ lime (35g), juice and zest • ¼ cup (4g) chopped fresh coriander Wrap the corn in its husk in cling wrap. Microwave on high for 2½ minutes. Remove, let cool, then husk.

Stand the corn in a wide, shallow bowl and with a sharp knife, slice downwards to release the kernels, discard the cob.

Transfer the kernels to a medium bowl. Add the zucchini, lime juice and zest, and coriander. Season with cracked pepper and toss to combine.

• 4 x 150g boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 2cm thick) • 2 tablespoons (20g) jerk seasoning • 2 large mangoes (500g each), peeled and cubed • ½ lime (35g), juice and grated zest Heat a BBQ or non-stick frying pan to medium-high heat. Rub the chicken breasts with the jerk seasoning. Cook the chicken breasts for 5 minutes on each side, turning every minute, or until golden and cooked through. Home sweet empty home There are just over nine million private dwellings in Australia and at any one time, only about 85 per cent or 7.8 million of them are occupied full-time, writes MICHAEL MATUSIK.

A

further five per cent or 425,000 dwellings are used by visitors or for short periods of time and 10 per cent or 935,000 private dwellings are not used on a regular basis.

I repeat, one out of every 10 private dwellings in Australia is not used on a permanent basis.

It is “unoccupied”, according to the national statistician.

What is even harder to believe is that the number and proportion of unoccupied private dwellings has increased around Australia during the past 10 years. There were 830,000 unoccupied dwellings in 2006.

One would have thought that many owners would have either sold or rented out these underutilised assets. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

The quick reply to these numbers would be that most of these unoccupied dwellings are apartments in coastal markets

such as the Gold Coast and Cairns.

And while the proportion of unoccupied stock is higher in the regional coastal cities/towns – 13 per cent on the Sunshine Coast; 11 per cent on the Gold Coast and in Cairns – eight per cent, or close to 450,000, private dwellings in our eight capital cities are not being used on a regular basis.

Why? Overseas investors who would rather lock it up and not rent it out? Maybe. There are, for example, 145,000 unused private dwellings in Melbourne compared to 120,000 in Sydney.

Some of our regional centres – more so than our coastal markets – have a high proportion of locked-up dwellings.

In Geelong, 18 per cent of private dwellings are unoccupied and one in eight of Ballarat’s dwellings are also not used on a frequent basis.

It is the same for many dwellings in regional towns across South Australia – average 22 per cent; Western Australia, average 17 per cent; and Tasmania 17 per cent.

These are mostly family holiday accommodation, the second home or “batches” as they are called in New Zealand.

It seems a real waste, if you ask me.

Maybe, instead of a baby bonus, the government should have implemented a housing bonus to give owners an incentive to fully utilise their housing assets.

Frankly though, a stick would be better than a carrot, with much higher land tax being charged on those residential properties not under regular occupation.

We cannot keep handing out money.

Here are some more related housing statistics:

• One quarter of the Australian population lives alone; a further 27 per cent live in couple-only households and just 40 per cent have children living at home.

• There are 2.65 people, on average, per household, which has increased over the past decade but it is down from 3.5 people per dwelling two generations ago.

• There are now 3.2 bedrooms per dwelling, which continues to increase and is up by almost a whole bedroom since the late 1950s.

• More telling, is that today there are 2.4 million homes in Australia with four or more bedrooms, which is up from 2 million similarly-sized private dwellings just 10 years ago.

• Today, one in three Australian dwellings holds four or more bedrooms. Yet, three out of five (57 per cent) of our lone person households live in detached housing, as do four

out of five (78 per cent) of our couple-only households.

Most of these single and couple households live in three or four bedroom properties.

I stress – there is nothing wrong with this.

But the official statistics show – again – that we continue to overcapitalise in our housing stock in this country.

We have more housing than we can poke a stick at.

Fighting from the beaches of Bribie Further clues have come to light in the intriguing story of the big Allied amphibious training base at Toorbul Point in World War II, writes RON DONALD.

T

oorbul Point is the mainland area where the bridge to Bribie Island starts but was much bigger in a wartime context.

It took in the big hillside expanse which is now the Sandstone Point residential area, as well as Spinnaker Sounds Marina and extending west to Ningi.

Aerial photos from 1943, show the whole camp areas dotted with army and navy huts and other buildings.

The newly-established Combined Training School at Toorbul Point was an initiative of the Australian Army and was under the command of AIF 7 Div. Lt-Colonel Lionel Rose.

Its primary purpose was to train Australian troops for amphibious warfare in New Guinea.

Lt-Col Rose compiled a report on the activities of CTS between July 19, 1942 and March 21, 1943 when the establishment was taken over the US Navy for the ongoing training of sailors and troops for assaults on Japanese-held islands in the Pacific.

The craft used initially by the Australian infantrymen in simulated beach assaults on Moreton and Bribie Islands were contraptions known as folding boats which could carry about 20 fully-armed soldiers and were towed by commandeered launches manned by RAN personnel.

As time went by, big high-powered US landing craft began to arrive at the Toorbul Point establishment and the much-maligned folding boats were phased out.

US Navy LCI (Landing Craft Infantry) could carry 200 soldiers who, in beach assault landings, would disembark down a ramp on each side of the bow. Bribie Island wartime baker, the late Fred Kling, likened the ships and the ramps to “corvettes with telescopic ramps on to the beach”.

They were replaced mainly

by Higgins boats able to accommodate 36 soldiers and by LCTs landing craft, 33m long and with a carrying capacity of five 28-tonne tanks.

Assaults on Bribie Island beaches were carried out under simulated battle conditions, including floating smoke screen, machine gun fire on shore and strafing and bombing raids by

RAAF aircraft.

In his report, Lt-Col Rose listed the projects which had to be undertaken by Australian Army units before CTS commenced its first course on August 5, 1942.

These included the construction of “dummy craft” (landing and a “ship’s side”).

While the location of this training facility in preparation

for beach assaults from landing ships, was not specified, Australian soldiers including artillerymen and tank crews, confirmed after the war how they had clambered up and down landing nets on the ship’s side while comrades at the bottom swung the nets to simulate the action of a ship rolling in the sea.

Equally intriguing is an official Australian Army survey map of the Toorbul Point area compiled in August 1942, which shows a training platform on the beach midway between Toorbul Point and Sandstone Point.

Was this the site of the “dummy craft and mock ship’s side” mentioned in Lt-Col Rose’s report?

Recent clues suggest that the Americans during this occupancy of the CTS area constructed wharf-like structures along the beach extending as far around as what is known now as Kal-Makuta Drive near Spinnaker Sound.

These structures have disappeared with the passage of time.

A Brisbane businessman nearing retirement recalls exploring the foreshores of Ningi Creek with his younger brother during family holidays in a modest house near the waterfront in the post-war period.

He recalled seeing wharflike structures and tree trunks in which US personnel had carved their names and home addresses.

Another recollection comes from a man, now in his 80s, who visited the camp as a teenage

apprentice with his employers, to check on the US Navy’s refrigeration set-up.

His lasting recollection of the visit is that “all the Yanks seemed to be walking around eating ice cream”.

Surveys for residential development in recent years revealed the location of wells which supplemented the Toorbul Point camps water supply.

Unfortunately, nothing remains of the significant timber structures on the waterfront.

An official report shows that more than 20,000 Australian and US servicemen comprising infantrymen, commandos, cavalry and artillery personnel and the crews of 28-tonne tanks, trained at Toorbul Point.

Five tanks could be accommodated in the 33m US Navy landing craft at the CTS. In addition to soldiers there were 300 RAN personnel at the base in December 1942, and 400 US Navy members at March 21, 1943, when the area was taken as a US amphibious training establishment.

When the Americans left, Toorbul Point became a training area for barges and soldier-sailor crews of the Australian Army Water Transport Service prior to going to the Pacific theatres of war.

Retired journalist Ron Donald is the author of numerous articles and three books on wartime Bribie Island. Most recent is The Yanks Called it Terrible Point, the story of the big allied amphibious training base at Toorbul Point Moreton Bay.

Dahlias delight with a blazing return to fashion Consider the dahlia, the once-humble flowering bulb plant that has come into its own, writes GARDENEZI.

T

he dahlia now comes in such a variety of colours and sizes that you can make a summer-to-autumn bed from dahlias alone.

Put the tall ones with the big flowers at the back and the shorter-growing varieties at the front; maybe stick in a bit of alyssum and greenery to soften the plant palette and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got an easy-grow, easy-care floral display that at dusk and dawn will look rather like an impressionist painting.

The downside of dahlias is, of course, that although todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s varieties can keep you in colour from late spring to late autumn, they do disappear back underground for almost half the year.

We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t usually lift bulbs in southeast Queensland as they do in cold climates, so you need to plant that same bed with winter-spring flowering annuals during the dahlia â&#x20AC;&#x153;downâ&#x20AC;? period.

Then, in late spring to

summer, depending on variety, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll pop back up again to surprise you with a vivid show, just as the pansies and petunias are ready to be pulled out.

The same goes for pots.

Plant some dahlias now â&#x20AC;&#x201C; spoil yourself, be lavish â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and when they stop flowering in late

autumn, simply cut back the daggy foliage and pop in some cheery annuals.

First, replace the old potting mix with new. In very large containers, remove the top section of the mix, gently loosen around the bulbs for aeration, then put new mix on top. Top up mix again in spring when you remove the spent annuals.

Dahlias donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need much care.

Mulch beds in early spring, first adding plenty of compost to the soil. If compacted, dig over lightly.

Soil should be slightly sandy and very well-drained. Feed well and regularly once the leaves appear, until late summer.

Water thoroughly and regularly.

Spraying with a soap spray or Pest Oil will control most leaf-chewers and other insect pests.

THE GARDENEZI STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO PLANTING Getting your plants well established from the start saves a lot of time and trouble down the track. So follow the GardenEzi planting guide to make sure everything you put in the ground is going to stay there and flourish.

Trees and shrubs â&#x20AC;˘ If the plant comes in a pot, first soak the pot to moisten the roots and loosen the mix. If the plant is bare rooted, soak in lukewarm water overnight before planting. â&#x20AC;˘ Dig a hole thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the same depth as the pot and twice its width all round. Square the corners a bit to help roots spread outwards â&#x20AC;˘ Mix compost (or a good quality potting mix) with the soil taken from the hole; about the same amount of each. Crumble some of this mixture in the bottom of the hole. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bother to do this if your soil is already nice and crumbly and full of worms â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the new plant will thrive very happily for a while without any extra effort from you. â&#x20AC;˘ Gently remove the plant from the pot and place it in the hole.

Make sure the top of the root ball is level with or even just slightly higher than the surrounding ground, to ensure your young plant wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get waterlogged. If the root ball is wrapped in burlap (hessian), loosen but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t remove it when planting (however any nonorganic wrapping MUST be removed). â&#x20AC;˘ Hold plant in place while filling the hole with water, almost to the top. Allow the water to drain completely. â&#x20AC;˘ Now backfill with the soil taken from the planting hole, firming it around the roots as you go. Once the hole is filled and the plant in place, at just the right level with the surrounding ground and with its stem nice and straight, firm down the soil around the base. â&#x20AC;˘ Make a shallow depression all round the plant so that rain or hose water wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t run off. â&#x20AC;˘ Water thoroughly. A dose of liquid fish or seafood fertilizer will help the plant cope with planting stress and any sudden weather extremes.

Farewell to a faithful old Aussie friend It’s farewell to the old faithful Australian ute, the tilly, as it is known in some parts, writes BRUCE McMAHON.

W

ith Holden and Ford shutting down local production lines, both Commodore and Falcon utes are headed for the back paddock; invented in Australia and interred in Australia.

Sad, but the humble local ute that once worked from farm to factory became less versatile in the past couple of decades.

Both Fords and Holdens became low-slung, two-seater sports machines – handsome, comfortable and fast but not great load carriers.

And folk from Brisbane to Birdsville moved toward the more commercial one-tonners, Japanese-designed utes in the main. Among offerings from the likes of Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi were a range of single-cab utes, dual-cab utes, two-wheel drive utes and four-wheel drive utes for a wide variety of tasks.

These utes could carry more people and more stuff and, in the case of four-wheel drive

variants, go that much more further when roads turned ragged. As these machines became better engineered, with better road manners and comforts, and as people realised their versatility for work or play, the market bloomed.

The Japanese were followed by the Koreans, the Chinese and now the Germans with Volkswagen already here and Mercedes-Benz to introduce the X-Class ute in 2018.

To keep up with the evercompetitive field, Holden’s Colorado ute has had a decent makeover across the fleet, engineering changes in the main to better compete with rivals in 2017.

Unlike the Commodore ute range there’s a welter of choice among these Colorados, from a two-wheel drive, single cab LS at $29,490 through to a fullykitted, four-wheel drive dual cab at $54,990.

While single cab, two-wheel drive utes have gained fresh comforts and safety in recent years, these remain more the workhorse. The four-wheel drive, dual cab utes are the heroes, vehicles which attract attention as a substitute for the family car or SUV. Now Holden’s dual cab Colorado ute for 2017 is a more positive machine on the road than before. Reworked suspension is more subtle and better suited to handle day-today drives. The Holden’s electric power steering has been revised, also helping make the ute easier to place on the road; the leaf-sprung rear end settles more quickly over rough stuff so it’s a more comfortable machine all-round.

The 2.8 litre diesel engine produces decent power and torque – 147kW and 500Nm respectively – and a six-speed auto mates well with this powerplant, if sometimes a bit reluctant to shift down a ratio.

But this Colorado’s engine, driveline and chassis are good enough to tow up to 3500kg and carry a full tonne, so nothing wrong with the Holden’s work credentials.

The four-wheel drive is a decent off-roader with grunt, clearance and traction controls although it would be nice to have a little extra low gearing in low range first, the auto’s a bit quicker than some; yet Holden’s hill descent control is one of the more reassuring systems for creeping down slopes.

The cabin is quieter than before but no bigger and, while comfort levels and ergonomics are fine, it feels a tad cosier and perhaps a little old-fashioned compared with some rivals.

This is a good machine all-round and while the Holden Commodore ute may disappear, the Colorado carries the badge with some distinction, whether to tow caravans, cart rubbish to the dump, get out birdwatching or run grandkids to the shops.

Joy of learning never stops Our education continues throughout life and the iPadman COLIN DUNKERLEY feels privileged to see the satisfaction that comes with mastering something new.

W

hen I was younger (much younger) I couldn’t wait to finish school so I didn’t have to study anymore.

I naively thought that when I had finished school, my learning was done. Boy, was I wrong!

No matter what direction our lives have taken there has always been change as products and services evolved.

Sometimes we didn’t want the change but life has taught us that nothing stands in the way of progress and whether we like it or not, change is going to happen.

And that is how it should be.

Ten years ago we carried around small, hard to read mobile phones that could, well, make phone calls.

Now we carry the most advanced computers that masquerade as phones in our pockets or handbags.

This change in technology has so many benefits and has made communicating with each other simpler than ever.

“You don’t need to learn how to do everything on these new devices in one day.”

However we often sabotage ourselves by trying to learn something new in one or two attempts. If that fails we write off the technology as being beyond us.

As children we made lots of mistakes while learning but still celebrated progress.

As adults, many people are quick to make excuses such as “my memory is not what it used to be” but usually it is just the unrealistic expectation of thinking we can learn everything new with one lesson.

It’s time to take the pressure of yourself. You don’t need to learn how to do everything on these new devices in one day.

In fact, you don’t need to know how to do everything they can do.

But this technology is not going away so don’t get left behind. Put the joy back into learning and have fun and celebrate while you make the inevitable mistakes.

I have been incredibly fortunate to see, time and time again, that wonderful feeling of satisfaction that someone who did not grow up with technology gets when they master something new.

Just this week I was privileged to see a client with a sight impairment make a free audio call through her iPad to her brother overseas.

The joy on her face as she accomplished this will stay with me for a long time.

have many clients who just can’t press the delete button, then they call me because their computer is running slow or it’s out of room.

I even know someone who would buy a new iPad each time one was filled up with photos!

So, new year is a good time to clean out the digital warehouse of unwanted photos, documents and emails that have been gathering valuable space and potentially slowing down your computer.

Get Organised: Put your files in the right folders. If you don’t know where they are, open windows explorer or Mac finder and look for folders named Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures and Videos. They are there to make it easier for the computer to find relevant material so start moving them into the right folders.

Clean up your Desktop: If you have many documents and files on your desktop, put them

Empty your Rubbish Bin: Right click on your Rubbish Bin and click “Empty”. Delete your old emails: Every new year I delete every email that is more than six months old.

Start culling your pictures: Stop putting it off, it’s time to get rid of them! There is no other way around it, so dive in. Start by deleting the duplicates.

Disk Cleanup: Windows computers: click on your menu button and type Disk Cleanup on your computer, open it and check the boxes - Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin and Temporary Files and then click “OK”.

Take action now to avoid conflict later An enduring power of attorney is equally important as your will, writes DION McCURDY.

A

n Enduring Power of Attorney (EPoA) is a legal agreement giving someone else the power to make financial and/or personal and health decisions on your behalf.

“Enduring” simply means that the power continues even if you lose the capacity to make the decisions yourself.

If you are unable to make decisions for yourself, for example, due to illness or being overseas, giving someone your enduring power of attorney means that your wishes can still be carried out.

While the Supreme Court of Queensland has ultimate oversight of enduring powers of attorney, it is the Queensland Civil and Administrative

Tribunal (QCAT) that deals with most matters.

If you do not make an enduring power of attorney and you lose capacity, then someone may have to make an application to QCAT to either have QCAT make a decision for you; or have themselves appointed as your administrator or guardian, in order that they may make decisions for you.

The person making the application can represent themselves at QCAT, but getting legal advice is highly recommended.

If there is any chance that someone will contest the application then it may also be necessary to apply to be represented at the QCAT hearing by a lawyer.

The process of going to QCAT can give rise to family disharmony; taking of sides and arguments over what decision you would have wanted made, or who is the best person to be appointed to make decisions for

you. This may cause your family great expense, stress, and uncertainty at a difficult time and also delay the decision of QCAT. The best way to avoid QCAT is to get advice from your lawyer when making your enduring power of attorney so that your future needs can be catered for and you have time to consider your wishes and directions.

Having only a basic Enduring Power of Attorney in place may not be enough to avoid QCAT. An issue that should be dealt with in all EPoAs is authorisation for your attorney to engage in certain types of conflict transactions.

A conflict transaction is one in which there is a conflict between the duty of the attorney and the interests of the attorney, or a relative, business associate, or close friend of the attorney.

One of the most common

examples of a potential conflict is in dealing with your accommodation in a retirement village or nursing home. For example, where: • in order to raise sufficient funds, your attorney needs to sell an asset you have specifically gifted under your will to someone else and selling the asset results in the attorney being entitled to the portion of the nursing home bond as part of the residue of your estate; or • you appoint your spouse as your attorney and he or she wants to act in your overall best interests as a couple and mix his or her funds with yours.

If you do not authorise conflict transactions to take into account your future needs then it will be necessary for your appointed attorney to apply to QCAT for authorisation.

Enduring Powers of Attorney are an important part of your estate planning – as

important as your will – and they require legal advice and careful consideration.

Ron celebrates a lifetime of bliss

F

ROM creating educational material for children to drawing, painting, and writing, Ron Manning lives a rich and colourful life.

At Hibiscus Noosa Outlook, he continues to do it all, his wife Betty by his side.

“When I proposed, I promised to passionately kiss her every day of our marriage and I have upheld that promise,” he says.

While Ron says Betty requires a little more care these days, they are able to continue living together and enjoying their life to the fullest at Hibiscus Noosa Outlook.

“Betty and I go out for meals maybe three times a week,” Ron says. “It’s just lovely, like going back to the old-fashioned friendliness of knowing your neighbour and feeling comfortable and safe where you live.”

is always someone on hand should they need anything.

“Every day is happy. I like having a happy place and this is it,” he says.

Whether he is writing, drawing, lyricising or singing, this artist has the knack.

Ron’s best known work is the Aussie Alphabet, which he recently passed on to be published as an educational set.

It started as a funny song he sang for children and expanded to colouring-in drawings and artwork as part of his larger exhibition at Brisbane’s World Expo 88.

As he sets about writing the next chapter, Ron is just grateful to have Betty by his side.

“She’s a one-of-a-kind sweetheart,” he says.

The dilemmas of downsizing The contract was signed on Monday and the panic set in on Wednesday. KATE CALLAHAN recalls having to squeeze the contents of a five-bedroom farmhouse into a dinky two-bedroom beach house.

T

he only way to manage my escalating alarm was to get stuck into it.

First I converted my linen press, more like the manchester department of DJs, into something more manageable.

I loaded six jumbo garbage bags overflowing with doonas, sheets, towels, cushions, blankets and rugs into the car and drove to the Op Shop, feeling warm inside.

On a roll, I attacked the kitchen cupboards and packed up everything I hadn’t used in 12 months, with the exception of my late aunt’s pressure cooker. (There are exceptions to every rule and the pressure cooker had to stay.)

I went through my cookbook collection like a dose of salts.

Goodbye Margaret Fulton (circa 1975), the Women’s Weekly’s Best Ever Biscuit Collection and piles of others.

But I stopped short of parting with the recipe books that had been handwritten.

I saw my mother’s handwriting, then my aunts’ and my grandmother’s, all lovely cursive script, mostly in fountain pen, stretching across the dog-eared, gravy-splattered pages.

It was easy to tell from the food stains which recipes were favourites.

Feeling rather wistful and wiping a tear from my eye, I turned my attention to the wardrobe, a delicate downsizing operation to be sure.

There was a memory attached to every garment – where I had bought it, where I had worn it, who I was with at the time, how I felt when wearing it.

I gritted my teeth and decided to apply the KonMari method, made famous by downsizing guru and best-selling author, Marie Kondo, who says that life truly begins only after you’ve put your house in order. Really?

The idea is to keep what sparks joy and chuck the rest. If it sounds easy in principle, it’s difficult in practice.

I can assure you this was the hardest

part of my downsizing dilemma, but some hours later, after a lot of soulsearching, I had filled three 5kg postal satchels with corporate wear, leather bags and heels.

Destination? My dear friends, still on the corporate treadmill, keen to have my carefully maintained cast-offs.

Then it was time to assess the library.

There was no way all those books would fit into the beach house.

A strategy was needed. True to Marie Kondo, I quarantined the books I couldn’t part with – the kids’ exercise books with their early attempts at writing stories; my late mother’s prayer book; and the other books that touched my heart deeply for some reason or other.

Brutally, I then combed through the rest, looking for sacrifices at the altar of my downsizing.

I counted 23 management books, a legacy of spending too much time in airport bookshops; dozens of poetry books and classics I’d never read again; and more self-help books than a psychologist’s waiting room.

It’s one thing to know that Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus, but why did I need to know that Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office?

I must have had too many coffees at the Qantas Club.

Another trip to the Op Shop and the

book collection was culled to only those that sparked joy, genuine joy, such as AB Facey’s A Fortunate Life and Hugh Lunn’s Over the Top with Jim. Marie Kondo would have been proud.

I went to bed that night feeling justified and in the morning awoke with a smile that can only be described as smug.

But as I reached for my morning cuppa, I spotted the pressure cooker, sitting alone on the dining room table.

Could I bear to part with it?

The cooker was one of those random things that my late aunt had given me during one of her clean-outs.

“Here, Kate,” she said. “You have this, love. I’ve got no use for it anymore.”

And so I took it, knowing full well I had no use for it either.

Now that wretched, half-century old pressure cooker, so lovingly given and so reluctantly received, was part of my downsizing dilemma. But I had to get tough. Out she went, that old cooker, and I made a solemn vow that henceforth I would not accumulate.

Please God, keep me honest … otherwise the kids will complain loud and long when I’m gone.

EVER thought about finding where you came from?

The Queensland Family History Society (QFHS) is offering a beginners course in family history research next month. The six-week course addresses the process of sound genealogical research and teaches the most up-to-date methods of family history searching using a variety of resources.

Don’t worry, be happy – now Optimists have been scientifically proven to live longer and have less mental and physical illness. Clinical psychologist STAN STEINDL suggests putting positivity first in the new year’s resolution list.

A

s humans, we innately search for happiness, contentment, joy and a purposeful life. But what does it mean to be happy and is it possible to be happy without experiencing sadness and a whole range of other emotions?

Unfortunately, try as we might, even the most experienced professionals and scientists cannot provide the exact formula for happiness, as we all have different push buttons and emotional compositions.

What we do know is consciously promoting positive behavior in all aspects of life; in relationships, in our workplace and at home, has a profound effect on our level of happiness. Having a positive outlook is contagious (as is being negative) and can turn situations around.

And although some of us are naturally more inclined to view life with a ‘glass half empty’ attitude, research suggests there are ways to turn a pessimist into an optimist.

If optimism doesn’t come naturally, here are five tips to fill the half empty glass.

1. Think about bad situations as

temporary. This is the underpinning nature of an optimist. Think, “this is just a small setback and there will be more opportunities in the future” 2. Put things in perspective. When you find yourself in a negative headspace, it can be helpful to think about others who might be in a worse situation.

3. Consider your own health. Research suggests that optimists live longer and have better physical and mental health. Looking on the bright side will positively impact your health.

4. Talk it through. Communication is a large part of positive thinking.

Whether it is with a friend or a professional, talking about your situation can help you become more positive and put things in perspective.

5. Be kind to others. There is nothing more fulfilling than doing something to make another person happy. Whether it’s a random act of kindness, volunteer work or being compassionate to a colleague in distress, being kind is emotionally satisfying and helps nurture your inner optimist.

RENOVATE FROM THE INSIDE OUT As 2017 lifts off the launchpad some of us have commenced a “renovation rescue” on ourselves by resolving to eat healthier and exercise more.

Looking after the body certainly can make us feel better but for a real makeover, resolve to become better acquainted with your inner pilot light! A friend related how he was in hospital recently, suffering from a life-threatening illness. Things were looking grim. Then his heart stopped.

Another patient later related how, at that moment, the medical staff on duty noticed that he was dying and began to congregate around his bed, not rushing to him with defibrillator or drip, but unexpectedly telling jokes, laughing and talking loudly and animatedly about everyday things. They continued by his bedside, including everyone in the ward in the jovial conversation, until he began to regain consciousness.

Did they inherently grasp that their confident and loving presence was more effective than apparatus or medication?

Well, it certainly seems that way. You could say that spiritual discernment brought healing and harmony.

Herbs superb for beating the blues Retirees can worry and suffer anxiety for a multitude of reasons, but it’s something that can be treated with non-addictive herbal remedies, writes TRUDY KITHER.

A

nxiety is not only a silent epidemic in today’s society but it’s also an insidious and debilitating one.

It removes the pleasure and joy from one’s life so that the day-to-day endless worrying eventually takes its toll on the nervous system and ultimately mental and physical health.

It turns every day into a momentous effort with the only seeming relief being the escape into sleep at night – if you can.

Anxiety is not just being stressed or worried about something in particular – although even just one situation or event can cause constant worry, which turns into anxiety.

Anxiety can come in a variety of different forms such as generalised anxiety, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and phobic disorders.

Use of anti-depressants has doubled over the past decade, leaving Australia second only to Iceland, as the major user of these drugs.

Anti-depressants range from Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI), Serotonin and Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRI), Monoamine Oxidase

medicine it is also valued for its tonic and strengthening properties, especially for those suffering from overwork or nervous exhaustion. It is also a restorative tonic for the elderly and chronically ill and counters the debility that comes with long-term stress.

The withanolides that this herb contains are similar to the body’s own steroid hormones making it an excellent anti-inflammatory while also containing a high iron content.

Valerian (Valerianan officinalis) is well known as a central nervous system depressant and combines well with Skullcap for the relief of tension and hops for insomnia. It is a sedative and also an excellent treatment for anxiety, nervous tension and even headaches. Being an antispasmodic herb it will also help in the relief of cramps and can help where there is pain associated with tension.

Skullcap (Sculletaria laterifolia) relaxes states of nervous tension while renewing and reviving the central nervous system. It is good for treating anxiety, depression, insomnia and nervous headaches. It also has a specific use in the treatment of seizures and hysterical states as well as epilepsy.

Inhibitors (MAOI), Benzodiazepines and Beta Blockers.

However, they all come with severe warnings, side effects and sometimes strict dietary rules – and they can become addictive.

Fortunately, herbal remedies can be just as effective, easier on the body and have little to no side effects. They are not addictive.

Examples of excellent herbal remedies to treat anxiety are: Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) helps to dampen symptoms of anxiety.

Its gentle sedative properties produce a soothing and relaxing effect, reducing symptoms of nervous over-activity and panic.

It’s a valuable herb for many nervous states and is also used to treat conditions such as asthma, palpitations, high blood pressure and even cramps.

In these cases, the antispasmodic and tranquilising properties are the key to its usefulness, reducing the over-activity responsible for these disorders.

Withania (Withania somnifera) or Ashwaganda is an excellent herb for reducing over-activity and encouraging rest and relaxation. In Ayurvedic

Magnolia (Magnolia officinalis) has been used in Chinese herbal medicine since 100 AD to support and nurture the wellbeing of the body and treat a plethora of ailments. The two active compounds (Honokiol) and (Magnolol) are up to 1000 times more potent than Vitamin E in antioxidant activity. These are also thought to contribute to magnolia’s primary anti-anxiety and cortisol balancing effects.

In studies, Honokiol was found to be four to five times stronger than diazepam in reducing anxiety without the side effects. While diazepam reduces anxiety it also increases muscle relaxation, an effect not shared by honokiol.

In cases where there are high cortisol effects from the anxiety or disturbed sleep patterns due to the cortisol rising at the wrong time of the night, magnolia is invaluable.

It also has several powerful effects on acetylcholine levels in the brain, offering potential benefits for Alzheimer’s patients.

I absolutely loved this heartwarming novel by Inga Simpson who has a dual doctorate in creative writing and the history of Australian nature writing.

The themes of bereavement, ageing, imperfect relationships with children and grandchildren are realistic and beautifully written.

Changing times in rural Australia are well explored.

Mr Wigg’s passion for growing and caring for fruit trees, especially peach trees, certainly touched my green heart.

Mr Wigg is the first novel for Inga, who now lives on the Sunshine Coast.

Do yourself a favour and read this book. You will not be disappointed. 10/10

I do not have a book that I could single out as my favourite, so instead I have chosen a favoured author.

Crime fiction is my preferred genre mostly because I read for pleasure, not education or any other altruistic reason.

Good crime authors create interesting, clever and crazy characters that allow them to peel back the layers of society and reveal the best and worst of humanity.

Norwegian Jo Nesbo wins my favourite author status.

Nesbo is the creator of Harry Hole, a damaged but highly effective detective operating in violent settings that provide opportunity for social commentary contrasting with US crime.

Give Jo Nesbo a go – but please, read the Harry Hole books in order.

I first encountered Colette’s stories as a girl growing up in a small country town on the slopes of the Great Dividing Range in NSW .

The Nadine Chronicles, was my first introduction to the world of Colette whose books gave me great comfort after my mother died when I was only 16.

Earthly Paradise is an autobiographical account that taught me many things which have stayed with me.

Madame Sidonie Landoy Robineuu-duclos, a Paris-born, 30-year-old widow, married Mules-Joseph Colette, a former captain of the select Zouave infantry, whose leg had been blown off In Italy.

It is 1865 and with Sido’s two children, they settle at her manor about 100 miles from Paris. They eventually have two more children, a boy and a girl.

The girl goes on to become the honoured French writer, Colette. Colette grew up in a home full of cats, flowers, books, love and children. The garden was her sanctuary.

This book is a shimmering magnificent tribute from a much-loved daughter.

The love between Colette as a young girl and her marvellous mother makes Earthly Paradise a true treasure.

I channelled White Fang yesterday.

A big grasshopper was feasting on my mandarine tree.

Well, I’m not good at catching insects so I called on White Fang, the silent hunter.

He didn’t growl before he leapt, just straight in for the jugular.

I caught the intruder and twisted its head off. I had put my gardening gloves on first.

Okay, now for the book. I loved White Fang.

It has stood the test of time as a wonderful novel about dogs and wolves, their intelligence and their longstanding links to humanity as working animals and companions.

It’s about loyalty, patience and giving life a chance.

Jack London spent time in the northern wilds of Canada where he set this book.

Plenty of bar stories and beers must have gone into this tale. It’s rich with characters, some rough, some downright mean and evil.

London’s admiration and knowledge about wolves and their habits shines through every page. I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this classic.

Favourite book? Might as well ask, “Who’s your favourite child!”

My choice of a romantic story will surprise my friends who know me as a crime/ medical story aficionado but I pick this book up occasionally when I need to switch off.

It is like wrapping a warm scarf around me, drinking red wine and allowing myself to enjoy the descriptions of the beautiful bridges in Iowa, along with the precious four days of deep love discovery between Robert and Francesca.

It is the sadness of a love story thwarted by the decision of Francesca to stay with her husband and family.

Perhaps for me, as my favourite book, it is allowing myself to just occasionally revisit the halcyon days of my marriage, cut short by my husband’s death.

To quote the author, “In a universe of ambiguity, this kind of certainty comes only once, and never again, no matter how many lifetimes you live”.

Pops plans a huge year of orchestral entertainment

ueensland Pops, the alternate professional orchestra celebrates its 32nd year with a top program of orchestral entertainment for 2017.

A national leader as an arts company, this freelance professional orchestra is going from strength to strength and is succeeding without government funding.

So how does Pops manage that? By providing Queensland audiences with simply great entertainment.

The first new feature for 2017 will be the launch of a new recording.

The CD features some of the guest artists and music that has built the Pops’ reputation over many years.

hat sits under the border between France and Switzerland, generates temperatures 100,000 times hotter than the sun, and shoots protons at one billion kilometres an hour?

Step inside the Hadron Collider, a super experiment operating at the frontiers of energy, temperature and human ingenuity, at Queensland Museum until April 25.

Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland, and takes visitors to the heart of a particle collision.

Queensland Museum Network CEO and director Suzanne Miller said while many people have heard of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) they may not understand its purpose.

“Thousands of scientists are working in the LHC to improve our understanding of the building blocks of life,” she said.

“This immersive exhibition uses tangible elements to help explain particle physics and

quantum mechanics.

“Science helps us discover what’s in the universe and how those things work today, how they worked in the past, and how they are likely to work in the future.”

It is the world’s largest machine.

Consisting of a 27km ring of superconducting magnets, it is the work of more than 10,000 physicists and engineers from 100 countries.

Developed by the Science Museum in London, Hadron Collider: Step inside the world’s greatest experiment is the closest experience possible to visiting the famous site.

Visitors can be virtually transported to the world famous CERN laboratory, talk to virtual scientists, walk the tunnels of CERN, explore the control room and stand in the heart of a particle collision to relive an historical moment of scientific discovery.

THE LARGE HADRON COLLIDER: FACTS AND FIGURES • The LHC is the largest machine in the world and cost approximately £2.6 billion to construct.

• Thousands of scientists, engineers and technicians spent decades planning and building the LHC, which continues to operate at the very boundaries of scientific knowledge.

• In the LHC, protons travel at 99.9999991 per cent of the speed of light. This is equivalent to 299,792,455m per second or 1 billion kilometres per hour. That’s 30 million times faster than Usain Bolt.

• In the time you read this, a particle in the LHC could have travelled around the world 30 times.

• At full energy, each of the two proton beams in the LHC will have a total energy equivalent to a 400 tonne train travelling at 150 km/h. This is enough energy to melt 500kg of copper.

• The LHC produces 15 petabytes (15 million gigabytes) of data per year – the equivalent to a stack of CDs 20 km tall.

The WORLD in Your Hands Travel in Your Time Finding Napoleon - everywhere on Elba Exploring the Mediterranean aboard a SeaDream Yacht Club cruise goes far beyond the normal cruise ship routes, writes MICHAEL OSBORNE.

Portoferraio on Elba island in the Tuscany region of Italy. and where he threw himself into building new schools and hospitals, improving road networks and encouraging the arts, Napoleon was also quietly plotting his escape.

He was successful just 10 months after setting foot on the island. And he did it remarkably easily.

One evening when the British Navy’s “guard ships” based in the island’s Portoferraio Harbour were conveniently away elsewhere, Napoleon – a hero to most of the locals – and his men simply hopped aboard a few vessels put at their disposal and sailed 280km across the Med to land near Cannes in France.

Today, just 31,000 permanent residents live a laid-back lifestyle on dreamy little Elba, somehow putting up with four million visitors who annually invade the place between March and October.

their spreading disfigurement of the picturesque landscape.

We spent a captivating day on Elba during a Mediterranean cruise, taking a tour with a proverbial “walking encyclopaedia” guide from Italian sightseeing specialist DDP-Incentive.

She had a yarn to spin about everything from Napoleon’s time on the island to the wine, the culture and the honey industry. Bees thrive on wild rosemary and lavender and the blossoms of Australian eucalypts that were imported to manufacture medicine.

Among places to visit are the historic Tenuta La Chiusa winery that’s both a winery and a collection of holiday cottages right on the beach in Portoferraio, and which dates to the 1700s. Today’s owners proudly say Napoleon chose to stay there on a couple of occasions.

T

his is one of the great attractions of small luxury cruising – the world is yours to explore at your pace in a totally relaxed and unrushed atmosphere.

A case in point was my visit to the island of Elba, famous as the place where Napoleon was exiled two centuries ago.

Of course, Napoleon could certainly have done a lot worse than being exiled to the little Mediterranean island in 1814, as punishment for his surprising loss in the war with Russia, which he’d sought to add to his many other conquests across Europe.

Not only was Elba a place of exquisite natural beauty in the sunny Tuscan archipelago off Italy, but the allied Sixth Coalition that had forced the Emperor’s banishment allowed him to take a thousand or so faithful troops and other followers with him.

Extraordinarily, he was also allowed sovereignty to run the place.

But while he stated publicly that Elba was “where he would be happy to rest”

tossed with gusto into another favourite called Schiaccia Briaca – the locals’ appropriately-named “drunken cake”.

And yes, our guide assured us, Aleatico was a favourite of Napoleon, who would drink a glass with breakfast every day.

She revealed her grandmother swore by the wine too, quaffing a glass a day for her health – and Grandma lived to 100 years.

There’s also the tiny off-shore island of Monte Cristo, the one made famous by Alexandre Dumas in his 19th century tale The Count of Monte Cristo.

If you want to visit there, register now as only 1000 visitors are allowed on this national park annually and waiting time is three years.

Elba still exports vast amounts of roof and floor tiles made from the local clay, but it is its beaches, restaurants, bars and museums and its connections with Napoleon which makes it famous.

Just about every major building seems to have some link with the man.

READY TO ROCK A SOUTH PACIFIC CRUISE Australia’s biggest rock‘n’roll festival at sea, Rock the Boat, is back and set to be bigger than ever.

Rock the Boat 7 will include performances of one of the world’s greatest rock bands, Status Quo and their new 16-piece band, backing vocals, acoustic band and six-piece string sections.

They will be joined by an illustrious line up of Australian rock legends in what will be rock n’ roll paradise on the high seas.

HOLOCAUST EXHIBITION OPENS IN CANBERRA

GOOD NEWS FOR GREY NOMADS

A new permanent display titled The Holocaust: witnesses and survivors has opened at the Australian War Memorial.

It tells the story of the Holocaust through the experiences of several survivors who later made lives in post-war Australia.

Memorial director Brendan Nelson said the display was a much-needed addition to the Australian War Memorial’s World War II galleries.

He said the Holocaust and its impact was also an Australian story as between 20,000 and 35,000 survivors of the genocide made new homes here.

The Australian War Memorial with the support of the Jewish Holocaust Centre has developed the exhibition.

It includes more than 85 collection items from both institutions.

Many items are original documentation from Jewish men, women and children who survived ghettos, and concentration and extermination camps.

The display features the artwork of the official war artist Alan Moore, who accompanied British troops as they liberated Bergen-Belsen.

This exhibition at the Australian War Memorial reveals the extremes of humanity’s capacity for evil, as well as its spirit of endurance and survival.

A critical section of the national network between the Northern Territory and Western Australia has been flood-proofed to a 1-in-50-year standard, with the roadway and two bridges over Saddle Creek on the Victoria Highway raised in time for the wet season.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said raising the roadway to 2m would help keep local communities connected and industries moving during the wet.

“This is the only sealed road connecting the Northern Territory with the Kimberley region of Western Australia, so improving the flood immunity of the two bridges over Saddle Creek Bridge as well as their approaches is an important part of keeping people connected during the wet season,” he said.

Historically, the crossing at Saddle Creek has been closed by flooding for hours at a time, three to four times a year.

“The project delivers a more reliable, safer highway for residents of the region as well as the pastoral, mining, tourism and freight industries that rely on this interstate connection,” NT Senator Nigel Scullion said.

The Selous Game Reserve is a massive and yet unknown expanse of Africa, teeming with wildlife, including the famous “Big 5”.

The reserve is one of the largest fauna reserves in the world, officially covering more than 50,000sq kms. With adjacent wildlife controlled areas it covers more than 100,000sq kms and was declared a World Heritage Site by the UN in 1982.

Famous for its large herds of buffalo and elephants and relatively good sightings of the rare African Wild Dog, among many other species it also has an impressive list of bird species.

The reserve is named after the English explorer, author, hunter and conservationist, Frederick Courteney Selous.

He was finally allowed to sign up for World War I in 1915 at the age of 64, when it was realised that men with his attributes were needed if the Allies were to enjoy any success in this area.

Up, up and away from all the wildlife Caravans have all the comforts of home but, writes grey nomad BEVERLEY EVERSON, occasionally it’s nice to get away for a few days with the basics and leave the caravan behind.

W

hen our children were young, our weekend camping trips took huge organisational skills to fit everything in the station wagon – tent, sleeping bags, large esky, surfboards, food and all the paraphernalia that goes with camping.

With all that early experience, we are now efficient campers who travel a lot lighter.

Of course we do like our comforts and having a rooftop tent (RTT) certainly allows for easy setup with a comfy mattress.

The RTT is quickly and easily assembled and is a great compromise between regular camping and towing a camper trailer.

It is a compact package securely attached to the roof rack on the vehicle that can be instantly unpacked into a comfortable bed with a decent mattress.

All you have to do is unzip the bag, unfold and drop the ladder that gives access to the ground. It’s a very quick setup.

The RTT is easily lifted and fitted to most vehicle roof racks with no need to modify and are small enough for easy

The beach is quiet, except for passing wildlife. have a spot.

The usual Queensland National Park fees apply.

The only facilities are toilets with picnic tables on most sites. You need to take everything including plenty of water for drinking, cooking and showers.

Generators are not permitted but fires are allowed in off-ground fire containers.

Only gas/fuel stoves are allowed, and bring your own wood.

Once you are set up, all that is required is to make a cuppa, sit back and look out to the beautiful blue ocean and watch life go by.

The campsites have walking tracks to access the beach and most have ocean views.

You are also likely to see a wallaby jumping along the beach and dolphins swimming by or hear the laugh of kookaburras in a nearby tree.

Obviously, because this is the tropics, the best time to camp is autumn to spring as the summer months are extremely hot and humid.

Access to the campground is via 6km of good gravel road and breathtaking views of the ocean and Cape await.

There is also a parking area for day trippers.

A short walk up the beach leads to an estuary which looked very enticing for the keen angler.

It is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park but fishing is permitted.

Remember though, that this is crocodile country and box jellyfish and marine stingers are common.

RTT camping is a great alternative to caravanning and lighter on fuel.

You have the flexibility to go off road where the caravan can’t go and get the full experience of a particular area.

As bedding is part of the roof tent you really only need to pack some essential cooking utensils, food, esky or car fridge and clothing/toiletries and water.

It definitely rounds out the experience while on the road.

Panama hats off to a cruise An escorted small group tour to the USA and Panama is a grand adventure, writes Escape consultant VALERIE CLEMENS.

e were a very excited group as we set off from Brisbane airport together, anticipating the adventures to come on our Panama Canal and USA trip.

The bucket list tick though, went to the journey through the Panama Canal.

The day prior to the transit we visited one of the locks on land to find out how they operate and watch passing ships.

We ended with some time in San Diego to explore this lovely city. We were all pleasantly surprised at how it was clean, friendly and easy to explore.
