I

t was the immortal bard who said “if music be the food of love, play on, give me excess of it” and as Julie Lake writes, it is also the food of life.

It’s the one excess in which “surfeiting,” as Shakespeare would say, won’t do any harm at all. It’s interesting that it’s not only good for the soul and the mind, but also has physical advantages in getting those old fingers moving, whether it’s on a keyboard or on strings.

Mind you, as someone who never got past Chopsticks, I would have to qustion inflicting my musical talents on anyone at all.

Contents and found I just couldn’t quite translate those notes from page, to fingers, to keyboard.

Trying to read those lines with “Every Good Boy Deserves Fruit” to work out every note, was a painful process for everyone involved. I gave up, claming you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. And now we have plenty of “old dogs” willing and succeeding at learning new tricks and realising a long-nurtured love of music.

I dared to suggest that my knowledge of ukuleles was still back in the 1970s with Tiny Tim tiptoeing through the tulips, and was roundly shot down. The uke is now a very serious instrument making seriously good music for plenty of over 55s willing to give it a try.

If you don’t believe me, head out to Kenilworth later this month and tune in for yourself at the ukulele festival, on April 20-23.

It sounds like it will be a load of fun and who knows, you could return home a convert.

Strike a chord that’s music to your soul If y you want a long, happy and mentally active life then, writes JULIE LAKE, start playing a musical instrument.

usic is the answer, that’s the message coming through loud and clear from medical researchers, therapists and music res teachers – and older people everywhere tea are embracing it.

From Los Angeles to London, Oslo to Osaka, time-rich retirees are forming Os rock roc bands and chamber groups and while wh some are relearning their skills after aft decades of musical inactivity, others are taking up a musical instrument for the first time. And loving it!

For years we’ve observed the long life span spa enjoyed by so many musicians, with pianists such as Arthur Rubinstein pia famously performing publicly into their fam 90s.

90s This anecdotal evidence of the benefits of playing music are now being ben quantified by many scientific studies. In qua one such study, an assistant professor of music mu education at the University of South Sou Florida studied the impact of individual piano instruction on adults ind between the ages of 60 and 85. After six bet months, those who had received piano mo lessons showed more robust gains in les memory, verbal fluency, information me processing speed, planning ability and pro other oth cognitive functions than those who had not received lessons.

The reasons for cognitive function improvement are obvious – playing an im instrument pushes your memory in ins many different ways. With some m instruments (guitar, harmonica) you may learn to play only by ear and thus not need to read musical notation but you will still need to n remember notes and chords and melody rem – perhaps even the words of songs. p Everyone who takes up learning an

instrument late in life marvels at the way in which fingers (or lips) soon seem to remember which chords and notes to play; this is called “finger” or “muscle” memory.

Besides improving your brainpower, playing music improves flexibility of hands, wrists and fingers, builds confidence and self-esteem and gives you a richer social life because few people play music in isolation.

It is, too, a great solace in times of trouble to pick up your instrument and just play by yourself “When you retire,” says Kathleen Nicholson, a therapist who started playing the flute in her early 60s, “it’s too

And there’s a musical instrument for just about everyone, whatever your physical disabilities.

While researching this article I met an

87-year-old man who is learning to play the panpipes and an 81-year-old who tried the ukulele but found his hands were too arthritic so he took up the harmonica and has turned out to be very good at it.

This means he can play the blues with other amateur musicians, something he’s always wanted to do and it has also improved his bronchiectasis, to the delight of his lung specialist.

Most over 50s taking up music for the first time opt for more accessible instruments such as the ukulele, guitar and harmonica.

Trevor Gollagher was an awardwinning professional drummer for 35 years and has played all over the world and with many well-known Australian groups, including the popular Little Fi and the Delta Kings.

Today he is equally well known as the ukulele man around southeast Queensland, teaching as well as performing.

“A couple of people I’ve met through my classes were sad and lonely,” he says.

“Through playing music they have made friends and turned their lives around.”

Trevor’s CDs show just how good a uke can be in the hands of a skilled player but he also makes tutorial videos, available free on YouTube, to help would-be players get started.

Dr Jennifer MacRichie, research lecturer in musical perception and cognition at Western Sydney University, is a strong believer in the idea that the third age in life should be a musical one.

“With the myriad benefits provided by playing a musical instrument, it would seem beneficial to have a wider variety of musical activities on offer to the older generation,” she says.

A cursory look at governmentsponsored programs, however, shows that teaching music to adults is a very low priority indeed.

Fortunately, thanks to the digital revolution, learning music has never been easier and cheaper, with online tutorials available for almost every musical instrument.

Some serve as samples for paid on-line tuition, often offering one-on-one structured programs. Others are free – and you can access them through your laptop computer, tablet or even your phone.

It’s a great way for people to try out their skills before spending too much money. If you want to really learn to

play well, however, you need to find a music teacher who understands the needs of mature age students.

This is especially true for the more demanding instruments such as the flute, saxophone, violin and piano, in which the ability to read music is required Heather Nel is best known for developing musical ability in children from an early age, but her Music Matters program brings a similar innovation to teaching adults.

Next to the ukulele and guitar, the piano is the most popular instrument with mature age students and Heather’s methods help overcome perceived difficulties of mastering something that has pedals as well as keys.

She teaches an easy keyboard playing technique that helps students learn music as they play.

“I have tricks to help people learn music easily,” she says, adding that she also studies the personalities, interests, inclinations and even the physical

disabilities of her older students to help them identify and achieve their individual musical goals.

If you don’t have room for a piano at home, Heather suggests an electronic keyboard which is smaller, lighter, portable and has built-in accompaniment from other instruments. And you can make the keyboard sound just the way you want – honkytonk, blues, classical – it’s all there.

You can even compose your own music using computer programs and apps – then print it out and play it, just as you can download lyrics, chord charts and sheet music for thousands of songs and instrumental pieces from pop to classical, tin whistle to trombone.

Taking up a musical instrument for the first time when you’re drawing your pension or spending your superannuation may seem daunting but many are doing just that, not only because it’s healthy but – more importantly – because it’s fun!

MAKING THE COMMITMENT Taking up music lessons in your senior years means carefully considering several aspects before signing on the dotted line.

Heather Nel of Music Matters says while it is exciting to learn a new skill in your senior years there is a greater chance that your health or life schedule may not permit your best intentions.

There’s also the risk of paying for a full term and then having to miss half the lessons you have paid for, or not enjoying it as much as you thought you would.

So she has come up with an “Agreement for Mutual Satisfaction” which she says better describes the relationship between teacher/coach/ friend and the senior student. “ I gain so much from my friendship with my senior students,” Heather says.

FRIENDSHIP FORGED BEHIND THE KEYBOARD AND PANPIPES

Elsie and Val share the joy of returning to music lessons and resurrecting skills they thought they had lost.

Whether it’s a new venture or a childhood skill revisited, music teacher Heather Nel finds that many over 55s are taking advantage of their changed life circumstances to indulge their lifelong wish to learn an instrument.

Among her students are 77-year-old Elsie and Val, who is about to turn 88.

They have found that enrolling in music lessons has not only given them something to look forward to each week, but also more confidence.

They met at The School Locker in Maroochydore, for music lessons and struck up a friendship.

“For years, I had been wanting to learn more piano theory and chord structures to help me to understand how

to play new tunes,” Elsie says. “I can play the old tunes by ear but I haven’t kept up with reading music so it is difficult to learn new songs.

“I am still very busy but I’ve decided to put aside some time just for me to learn how to read music properly.”

Val has always been surrounded by music. She studied singing at an Opera Academy in Sydney as well as classical guitar in London in her younger years.

“I recently I had to give up my music and was feeling quite depressed about it,” she says. “If you are lonely you have to make the effort to decide what you want to do, whether it’s music or something else. I needed something to feed my brain, something new.”

She asked Heather and asked about playing the panpipes.

“I had always loved the sound of the pipes, but did not know how to play them. I have to start right from the beginning, so it really feeds my brain, which is what I need,” she says.

Elsie’s lesson starts straight after Val’s, so their time overlaps.

“It is a treat to play and sing together with Val at lesson,” Elsie says. “When I heard her sing I had goosebumps.” And Val says she enjoys Elsie’s playing so much that she would like to share their music with others who can’t get out and about. continued over>

KEN PROVES HE’S THE D’UKE OF OZ FEW play the ukulele with more enthusiasm than singer/entertainer Ken O’Flaherty.

In his time, Ken has been a multimedia personality – and a multi-music personality too, playing in his own small uke group, the D’Ukes of Oz and the Irish band McGuinness and Co which toured the world helping promote Clive Palmer’s plan to create a replica of the Irish-built

Tit Titanic.

Today he mostly concentrates on the ukulele and teaches it too, through his classes Uke’nhavefun (he has a taste for puns).

Five years ago, Ken started the Sunshine Coast’s U3A ukulele classes, Su with four women students. There are now 200 members but even larger is the Sunshine Coast Ukulele Masters th Club (SCUM) of which Ken is a member.

Clu And there are other ukulele groups on the Coast too because this most sociable, inexpensive and unintimidating soc of instruments is the most popular choice for mature age students with time on their hands and music in their soul. the Ken says he can teach someone to play their first ukulele song in an hour pla and only a few basic chords are needed to start you off. And you can buy a decent uke for around $120 (cheaper ones are for kids).

Of course, as with any instrument, you can go on to become a virtuoso and upgrade to a better instrument but most players are content to strum simple songs and sing with their friends.

One such player is Ernie who almost gave up on his U3A ukulele classes because of the arthritis in his hands. Ken showed him alternative ways to play key chords and six years later Ernie is still playing – and his wife has joined him.

“The oldest player I know is 92”, Ken

says. “She can only play the C major chord because her hands are so gnarled but she joins in whenever this common chord comes around and loves singing along too”.

One of the things Ken O’Flaherty enjoys most is entertaining in retirement villages and nursing homes.

He is a great believer in music helping stimulate the memory cells of those with dementia and tells the story of the Scotsman who had been in a nursing home for months without showing any signs of cognition.

Staff had repeatedly tried – and failed – to make contact with him. Upon hearing this, Ken played the old Scottish ballad The Northern Lights of Aberdeen.

At once the old man responded. In Ken’s words, “he’d been just lying back in his chair taking no notice of anything and suddenly his eyes brightened, his foot started tapping and he even began to sing along”.

Since then the nursing staff in that home play Scottish music to their elderly patient to try and keep his memories alive. Ken has many such stories – and many examples of why playing the ukulele benefits your health and your social life.

“You can play a thousand songs with just a couple of chords,” he says. “So my advice is to go out there and have a go!”.

Lions return to the Menin Gate The Menin Gate lions which thousands of Australian and other allied forces marched past on their way to the Belgian battlefields of the Western Front during World War I, will return for a visit to their original home in the city of Ieper (Ypres) in Belgium.

They have been displayed inside the front entrance of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra since 1991.

From 1822 the stone sculptures bearing the Ypres coat-of-arms stood at the entrance to the Cloth Hall, the town’s civic and commercial centre, before being moved to either side of the street leading to the Menin Gate in the mid-19th century.

They remained there during World War I even as Ypres was reduced to ruins

by German artillery fire.

The lions, broken and scarred, were later recovered from the war rubble and in 1936 the Burgomaster of Ypres presented them to the Australian government as a token of friendship and an acknowledgement of Australia’s sacrifice in the region during the war.

A joint initiative between Belgian, Flemish and Australian governments will see the lions temporarily returned to the Menin Gate, coinciding with the centenary of one of the most notorious and costly campaigns of World War I, the

third battle of Ypres. This campaign included the battles of Menin Road, Polygon Wood, Broodseinde, Poelcappelle, and Passchendaele.

The names of 6191 Australians are among the 54,000 British and Dominion soldiers listed on the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing, commemorating those who died in the fighting in Flanders who have no known grave.

The lions will be taken home by the Royal Australian Air Force and arrive in time for Anzac Day. They will return to the Australian War Memorial after Remembrance Day this year.

While the lions are on display at the Menin Gate, there will be a small exhibition at the In Flanders Fields Museum to outline the history of the sculptures since their creation in 1822.

VIETNAM CANCELS LONG TAN CROSS COMMEMORATION The Vietnamese Government has confirmed there will be no official Anzac Day commemoration at the Long Tan Cross site this year.

Small groups will still be allowed low-key visits to the site, without media.

The Vietnamese Government is developing regulations and guidance for visitors. Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said Australians travelling to Vietnam for Anzac Day should plan accordingly.

“The Government continues to work with Vietnamese authorities on an

outcome that would work for both countries,” he said.

“While disappointing, we respect Vietnam’s right as a sovereign nation to determine the nature of commemorations held on its soil. We ask any Australians who will be in Vietnam to respect the decision.”

DOMESTIC AIRLINES PUSHED CLOSER TO “FARE” PLAY Consumer group Choice has welcomed a pledge by the ACCC to review the behaviour of Australian airlines.

“It’s great news that just two months after we launched our complaint into the shonky practices of Australia’s major domestic airlines, the regulator has decided to investigate,” Choice’s Matt Levey said.

“From repeatedly informing travellers they have no refund rights to a lack of redress when flights are delayed and cancelled, domestic airlines have been flying below the radar for too long.”

ACCC chairman Rod Sims said the regulator would be looking at the terms and conditions used by the airlines and

whether the sector was complying with the consumer guarantees for delayed and cancelled flights.

I am wondering if your English language guru can shed any light on why he feels we have words of the same spelling with vastly different meanings such as the following couple of examples: “The house we live in is within easy distance of a venue where jazz bands play live” and “It brought a tear to my eye when I saw them tear down my old home” Thank you for your monthly magazine, it is always a good read with interesting articles and information.

“The use”, singular, requires the singular “is”. Yes, subject/verb agreement is also really annoyink!

David Parmiter THE Willys Jeep correspondents Bruce McMahon and Bill Burton (YT Feb and Mar) would be interested in my holiday reading, the newly published Warbaby, the true story of the original jeep.

The American Bantam Car Co,

prewar Austin of England distributors in America, promoted and sold the concept to the US military, then designed and built the first jeep (note lower case j).

Their prototype rolled from the factory on 21 September, 1940.

The military gave Willys and Ford full access to the vehicle and Bantam’s blueprints, but Bantam was already producing its “Bantam Reconnaisance Cars” before the others had prototypes ready. The best features of the competing vehicles soon morphed into the standardised and interchangeable Willys MB and Ford GPW army jeeps (truck, ¼ ton, 4X4), comprising most of the 648,000 jeeps built during World War II. Willys built some 56 per cent of WW2 jeeps, Ford 43 per cent and Bantam 1 per cent. The latter are the “holy grail” for we jeep collectors.

Post war, the Federal Trade Commission directed Willys-Overland to “cease and desist” from claiming to have invented the jeep, a ruling still valid. In 1950 Willys trademarked the “Jeep” name (note uppercase J).

The full story is a classic one of bureaucratic conservatism, of big business against the little man, and of power, politics and inflated egos.

I was in the Public health care system and attended Gold Coast University Hospital. I’d put off the operation for a year, but decided I was being ridiculous and went ahead with it.

I’d asked for some sedation as I knew I’d be nervous but I was completely aware of what was going on and heard a lot of the conversation between the two doctors, as the younger doctor performed the operation under the supervision of

the senior doctor, who I was pleased to have for my op as I’d heard really good things about her. During the operation it was great to hear her praising the other doctor and at the end she said, “you’ve done a beautiful job”!

I was staying overnight at my daughter’s and that night I lifted the eye pad and looked at the television. I could not believe the clarity and brightness and realised how dull and blurry things had been to me pre-op. When I was home the next day I was shocked at how old I looked! Putting in eye drops four times a day for another three weeks was not a burden for me. I’m taking no chances so I’m not wearing my usual eye makeup but do wear my foundation.

I can see everything so clearly and it’s marvellous how one eye can compensate for the weak vision in the other eye. I’m now on the waiting list for an operation on the left eye, within 10 months.

Puulease! There are plenty of us not in our dotage once we hit 70. I have a friend who nursed her wheelchair-bound son for 53 years until he died on her 93rd birthday and she managed more than most of us can ever imagine well past her three score years and 10 mark and she is only now moving into care. And what about all the grey nomads travelling the countryside looking after themselves, not to mention the countless volunteers keeping organisations ticking over?

NOW that autumn is here and life has resumed its customary routine, we can but reflect on the highlights of summer, of which the “Summer of Tennis”

probably takes top billing.

On the last Sunday evening of January, the public was riveted to their TV sets by a most exciting finale of this year’s event by their favourites, Roger Federer and Rafael (Rafa) Nadal, using every technique, strategy and all their energy as they battled for supremacy.

Seasoned tennis fans and novices alike would not have been disappointed, regardless of who won, and Tennis Australia deserves all the praise and accolades for so successfully hosting an event with so much global interest.

As a tennis-loving nation, however, there was an element of annoyance that was inflicted on those of us tennis-savvy viewers and that was the incessant superfluous and intrusive commentaries with which we were bombarded throughout the series for hours on end.

Commentaries varied from repeated detailed descriptions of the most mundane and obvious strokes, just witnessed by the viewers themselves, to the mutter of encyclopaedic information that was quite superfluous and indeed distracting. Then there were the esoteric discussions of what players should or should not have done, or where they should or should not have placed themselves on the court or where that shot or other should have been placed.

None of this annoying and pointless theoretical discourse was consequential to the outcome of any of the matches.

Turning off the sound was not an option as that would have deprived viewers of court-ambience, the call of the ball-boys and the umpire’s rulings (although we could have done without some of the players’ excessive grunts).

Please Tennis Australia, take pity on us viewers in future events and have the commentators turn off their microphones when they have a compulsion to chatter among themselves, and provide relevant commentaries in the breaks.

There’s plenty to feed an addiction to dictionaries DAVID PARMITER looks up the word “dictionary” ... in the dictionary, of course. But which one?

T

he definition is a book containing a selection of the words of a language with explanations of their meanings, pronunciations, and etymologies ...; lexicon; glossary”.

Very interesting. But then you have to know what etymology, lexicon and glossary mean which, fortunately, I do.

If you look them up, you end up back with the dictionary, and Latin and Greek.

“Dictum” is Latin for a word – dictation, take down these words.

The word “gloss” comes from the Greek word for “tongue”. “Lexicon” is Greek for a word-book. “Etymology” comes through Latin from the Greek and means the derivation of a word.

Through English history, there have been literally scores of dictionaries, most of them created in the 18th and 19th centuries when scholars seem to have been obsessed with telling the reading classes where words come from.

The most famous of these was Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) English lexicographer and public speaker. His Dictionary published in 1755 became the Bible for students and teachers for the next 200 years.

In 1808, John Jamieson published his

Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language.

If you know the popular song D’ye ken John Peel? you might find this of interest.

The only word that strikes a chord with me is the word “glamorous”. The word “glam” is found in Gaelic, Icelandic and even Latin (clamor) and means loud or noisy. As in fashion, I suppose.

In the 1800s, there were many weird dictionaries produced.

John Hotten published his Slang Dictionary (1887) which included many obscure words, some of them now not printable. Like by-blow for an illegitimate child. What was he thinking? And why a dictionary of street language?

Then there was Edward Lloyd’s Encyclopaedic Dictionary (1895) which included words from Chaucer that he felt people should still know and use, even though after 400 years they had fallen into obscurity.

Thomas Darlington published The Folk-Speech of South Cheshire in 1887 for those who felt they needed to know this.

Nobody did.

John Phin felt the need to explain Shakespeare’s belief in fairies in his Folk-Lore of the Northern Counties of

England (1879). I don’t think they even had magic mushrooms back then. A Midsummer Night’s Dream?

But William Toone must take the cake. In 1831 he published his book about words nobody uses any more.

His Dictionary of Obsolete and Uncommon Words probably did not cause a rush to the bookshops, but scholars no doubt appreciated his hard work in uncovering the useless.

Feminists may or may not be familiar with the totally un-PC book by William Grimshaw. Ladies’ Lexicon and Parlour Companion (1854) will of course have omitted such vulgar male terms as “breeches” and “snuff”.

Henry Sweet (1845-1912) was a London-born wordsmith. The most influential comparative philologist (lover of language) of his day he became G.B. Shaw’s inspiration for Henry Higgins in the play Pygmalion.

Sweet helped pioneer the academic field of phonetics, and didn’t I sweat over Sweet back at Sarfamptern Universi’y!

Coming to the present day, we have the Oxford English Dictionary.

The Holy Bible of dictionaries was

begun in 1879 by Sir James Murray who was its editor until his death in 1915.

The OED is considered the definitive authority on the English language and gives you not only the meaning of every word, but also its derivation and every alternative usage.

In other words, you learn both vocabulary and grammar. Every writer and speaker should have this to hand beside the computer. Never mind Google; this is your primary word-source.

Americans rely on another dictionary, compiled by Noah Webster. Their vocabulary and grammar have diverged significantly from standard Oxford English and good luck to them. But colour has a ‘u’ in it; recognise and organise are spelt with an s; and I would never use Spellcheck on my computer because it can’t spell correct English.

Finally, what about us Aussies? Well, we have our Macquarie.

“The Macquarie Dictionary is to Australians what the Oxford is to the British and the Webster’s is to the Americans. It is our national dictionary,” writes Kevin Weldon in his preface to the 2011 signature edition which I won in a Literary Review competition.

The essence of a royal connection As we add vanilla essence to our baking, few of us pay attention to the label on the bottle and yet, writes DIANA HACKER, Queen has a very close connection to Brisbane.

T

here is an image of Queen Victoria and the words “Established 1897” on the vanilla bottle. I, for one, had not been very observant.

I came upon the story of the Queen Essence Company purely by chance when I was researching the life of Herbert Perry and his wife, the former Leila Elizabeth Markwell.

This couple was the first to live in Miegunyah and I allowed my focus to slip when I came across the marriage notice for Leila’s brother Edmonstone.

The following story unfolded.

In 1889, Edmonstone married Anna Elizabeth Taylor, the eldest daughter of Edward Taylor and Sarah nee Wells.

Edward Taylor was born in London in 1839 and arrived in Sydney in 1861.

In 1862, he moved to Ipswich and for some years ran a business with a Mr Berkley.

Eight years later, the business name was changed to Prosser, Taylor and Co until such time as Mr Prosser retired when Taylor formed a new company with George. L. Colledge and the firm began trading in Brisbane.

The business progressed vigorously and became well known for its vanilla and lemon essence.

The latter was favoured by many a shearer’s cook who appreciated the alcohol content.

Taylor and Colledge presented a display at the Exhibition (the Ekka) in 1897 and won six gold medals, using the name Queen.

This name was chosen for the essence because vanilla was a favourite of Queen Victoria.

HISTORY cheap” but good because it was so economical in use. Other products were Queen Extract rennet, and cheese and butter colouring, all manufactured in the Charlotte St premises.

At the Lady Lamington Poster Ball held in the Centennial Hall in 1900, Mrs Colledge participated, dressed as a shepherdess, advertising the firm.

After a social indiscretion on the part of Mr Colledge, the firm took a new partner and was known as Taylor and Elliott.

The company expanded and in 1922, products were developed in a laboratory in Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley.

In 1922 and 1923 the company was praised for its display of products at the Exhibition – from the Queensland maple display case to the elegantly designed perfume bottles.

They contained Lavender Water, old English Lavender, Boronia Flowers, Narcissus, Eau de Cologne and Eau de Queensland, Minnehaha and Diana perfumes.

The firm advertised soaps, bath salts, dusting powder, face powder, shampoos and brushes (particularly the Addis tooth brush) as being selectively packaged for Christmas gifts.

Old accounts from The Hospice, East Brisbane which was formerly Hanworth House, home of Captain Heath, show that Christmas gifts of 5/- [50 cent] bottles of

Taylor and Elliott’s Lavender Water were distributed to the lady residents.

Edward Taylor lived for many years at Sarlor in Edmonstone St, South Brisbane.

He was well known in bowls circles, being a member of the Booroodabin Club down the street at Newstead, as well as the Johnsonian and Brisbane Clubs and as a patron of the Masonic Club.

His other interests were photography, fishing and music.

Edward and Sarah celebrated their golden wedding at their home surrounded by their extended family in July 1924. Edward died in 1931 followed

by Sarah in 1932.

Historically and personally this has been an interesting story as my late father-in-law worked for many years at the Taylor and Elliott laboratory.

The Queen Essence factory continues production from its premises in Wakefield St, Alderley after being in South Pine Rd, Enoggera, for many years.

Now if I could just get back to my original search and locate the family members of the Menzies (after 1922) and Hayes families (after 1946) who also lived in Miegunyah, I’d be quite excited.

OLD MYRTLETOWN STILL HAS A STORY TO TELL MYRTLE sounds less than romantic for a place name, but in 1888, it was a far preferable choice for the good citizens of Boggy Creek, reflecting as it did, the groves of myrtle trees growing there.

By 1928, the name had morphed into Myrtletown which is about as close to the mouth of the north side of the Brisbane River as you are likely to get.

Actually, these days there’s not much town, or even any myrtles, but the place is compelling and, like a ghost town, sits at peace with its glorious past.

Myrtletown is 5km east of Pinkenba but struggles to retain a separate identity.

It’s hard to imagine that this industrial zone with large undeveloped blocks and few houses was once a prosperous agricultural district but a 1928 report described it as “a progressive settlement notable for its vineyards and market gardens and as an important contributor of grapes and vegetables to the Brisbane markets” with cosy homesteads and a population of at least 250.

Fertile Myrtletown was touted as the “home of the cauliflower”.

Myrtletown Reserve today is an oasis in an industrial desert with spreading fig trees, beautiful river views, picnic tables – and old concrete bunkers. It’s quiet, almost eerily quiet, green and interesting.

past. This area beside Boggy Creek was gazetted as a reserve for recreation in 1885. A second reserve was located further north and both were amalgamated in 1925 to make Myrtletown Reserve 3.55ha in the trust of Brisbane City Council.

This is where soldiers embarked for the Boer War and two world wars and also home to Brisbane’s World War II defences and the Navy’s Station 9.

Wander down to the water’s edge and if the tide is out, there’s another remnant of history — the rusted remains of what is believed to be the SS Koopa, a steamer once touted as The Queen of Moreton Bay. Launched in October 1911 she carried holidaymakers between Brisbane, Redcliffe and Bribie Island for 31 years.

She was decommissioned in 1953 (Bribie got a bridge) and then in October 1960, was towed into Boggy Creek and dismantled. Only a rusting hulk remains.

An unbounded locality within the suburb of Pinkenba, most of its residents moved on during construction of Brisbane Airport at nearby Cribb Island.

The local school closed in 1971 and industry has gradually taken over.

Today, Myrtletown is like the tidal swamp the hard-working settlers found in the 1880s but old Myrtletown, or even Boggy Creek, is a worthy adventure.

HEARING IT RIGHT

Under the gum tree again Watching his grandson’s cricket match is a bittersweet experience for HARRY DENNIS.

H

ere I sit under the gum tree again.

Another year has passed and grandson is back at school and a new season of weekend school cricket has commenced.

It is all I can do now, watch and encourage and just be there for him.

I used to love this game and my grandson enjoys the same passion I had for the game. I try not to say too much. I want to see him mix with his mates, enjoy the camaraderie of a team sport and learn his own lessons.

It takes me back to when I played.

Remembered moments of past glory and glossed over moments of despair and failure.

The game has a way of biting you in the bum. It can be so unforgiving. There is lots of time under the hot sun while in the field and lots of time on the sidelines when batting, just watching a team mate out in the centre.

And so it proved on this 30-degree sultry, humid day. The game started at 11.30 in the peak of the day’s heat.

The game is better suited to be played in the winter but convention and football make that impossible.

I had settled down on a slight levee

bank rise with a superb view down the wicket. I poured a coffee from my thermos and ate my Sao biscuits and cheese lunch.

My grandson bowled the best I had ever seen him. One wicket for one run off his allocated two overs. You might think that is not such a great achievement and I am just some doting grandparent.

He bowls these high-risk leg breaks.

They are the hardest things to bowl and you have to display such courage to even attempt them.

Of his 12 balls only one was pitched short of a length, his very last ball, and it was the one dispatched for one run.

pitching outside leg and breaking prodigiously. Yes, I was proud.

He was allocated a lowly batting position at number 10. He had made three runs when after completing a two he was in the process of adjusting his pad that had rotated on his leg. The only problem was he made the adjustment while outside his crease.

He was given out; run out. Technically the umpire was right and interpreted that maybe he was going for another run.

The lesson here is, if you are going to adjust your pads do it behind the crease not in front of the crease. Don’t give the umpire or opposition any chance to give you out.

It was a hard lesson for the boy. The one’s that hurt the most are the ones you never forget.

It is a game of courage and a game that builds resilience. It teaches humility if you but heed the lessons.

I can now philosophise but it was my grandson that needlessly lost his wicket.

Ageing models become the height of fashion The fashion industry is finally awakening to the power of older women and the dollars they add to the global fashion economy, writes KAY McMAHON.

n recent months, there have been several articles on the changing guard of faces, bodies and images gracing the advertisements and promotion for various fashion, jewellery and perfume ranges.

Ageing fashionistas, older actresses, musicians and models are now enjoying a resurgence of “call-ups” for catwalk, editorial and advertising campaigns.

While models such as ’60s icon Twiggy has recently been signed as L’Oreal’s brand ambassador, and ’80s model Christy Turlington is back on the catwalk, many of the new faces do not sport traditional modelling careers or bodies.

Actresses have become de rigeur among fashion images.

Seventy-one-year-old Catherine Deneuve has worked with Louis Vuitton, 69-year-old Charlotte Rampling signed with Nars a women’s clothing retailer, and 63-year-old Anjelica Huston has been the face for Gap. Musicians have been caught

While you could argue that most of these women have been genetically blessed – and have probably never had to clean a toilet or run the kids to school

between work, shopping and football or netball training – there is a glimmer that the ageism normally associated with fashion is changing.

Currently there are several popular fashion icons with no background in modelling or acting that are blitzing the contracts for fashion promotion.

The most notable, 96-yearold Iris Apfel, is hot property.

As one of the first to be photographed for Seth Cowan’s Advanced Style blog and movie, she has been feted by old and young for her style and fashion sense.

Her most famous quote that “dressing for your age is stupid”, has taken on a whole new meaning for women over 55.

Her Instagram and social media accounts give guidance and imagery on how to be comfortable in a unique look, and fashion companies all vie to have her sitting in the front row of their showings.

This may all seem remote to us here in Australia. However,

Australian women are also leading the charge.

Sixty-one-year-old Australian Sarah Jane Adams, otherwise known as Saramai, began a social media campaign for her jewellery business several years ago, but was surprised that photos of her and her eclectic style became popular.

Her love for Adidas shoes caught the attention of the company and her inclusion in the Advanced Style tribe has increased her popularity for fashion photoshoots, editorial opportunities and attendance at various events celebrating maturity, wisdom and style.

Her hashtag #mywrinklesaremystripes says it all and gives hope to the rest of us that our fashion sense should be comfortable and reflect our lifestyle, personality, bank balance and not the latest trends.

So, with Joni Mitchell singing in the background and Sarah Jane’s Instagram on my

mobile, I am off to follow their lead and rummage through my vintage bags to see if I can find something to wear to a wedding.

Or now ageism is on the slide, maybe a fashion company will “discover” my Instagram, forgive my wrinkles and XL body shape, and alert me to the perfect outfit for a mother-ofthe-bride.

New addition to the dream garage wish list When you test drive vehicles for a living, dreaming up the ultimate garage if you were to win the lotto becomes good sport. BRUCE McMAHON dreams on.

round here it was settled a while back just what would be coming if the lotto ticket delivered – an early 1970s Porsche 911, a dual cab, four-wheel drive ute (probably the Mazda BT-50) and a Mercedes-Benz C63 wagon (or maybe a Range Rover Sport).

And that’d be it, no Ferraris or Lamborghinis. An old Porsche (and we once owned one) can get the blood flowing, use up a tonne of driving skills, at speeds below legal limits.

A four-wheel drive dual cab ute is one of the most versatile vehicles on the planet. A C63 Benz is a premium hot rod and family car.

Maybe there’d be a custom ute project too, turning a LandCruiser ute into a more comfortable machine and reworking the Toyota body into a ’50s pick-up style.

So all that’s been pretty much sorted for some time, I just need to take more lottery tickets. But another candidate

Bring your photos back to life in seconds

SETTINGS TO MAKE YOUR DEVICE LIFE EASIER

Technology is taking away the burden of keeping your photos organised, writes the iPad Man COLIN DUNKERLEY.

Last month NATHAN WELLINGTON discussed accessibility settings for PCs. Now he shares five little-known accessibility settings for the smart phone or tablet.

uring the past 20 years digital cameras have made taking photos very easy, so easy that we seem to have lost control.

Because you are no longer limited by film, you keep clicking to make sure you get the perfect photo. At the time, you are sure one of the shots will be a good one.

The only thing is you never quite get around to picking the “good” one and often your collection of photos becomes bloated with duplicates or many similar photos that were never deleted.

What started as a wonderful hobby to preserve your memories has become a collection of excess that you rarely share with anyone.

With every photo taken the problem keeps getting bigger to the point where you don’t even know where to start. The thought of dealing with all those photos is overwhelming.

Thankfully technology has come to the rescue to solve the problems of duplication and similar photos you have in your collection. Many people spend hours trying to delete duplicates manually. You don’t have to.

Software exists for both Apple Mac and Windows PC and can be downloaded for free to find and remove your duplicate

f you have a Samsung, Lenovo, LG or Google phone or tablet you are using the Android operating system. This system was made by Google and has some fantastic settings to help you use your device.

Accessibility options come in all shapes and sizes and many are unique to the particular device or Android version.

Go to the Settings icon in the apps section of your device.

Talkback: Is great if your eyesight is failing or you’ve lost your glasses. Once you’ve selected this feature, whatever you tap, press or activate will be spoken aloud to you.

There are lots of Talkback settings to customise.

I would begin by activating all of them then paring each one back until you are happy with what the device is voicing.

Screen Changes and Magnification: Make your screen easier to see by changing the font and display size, adjusting the contrast and colours of the screen or activating the magnification.

You can triple tap the screen to zoom in and trip pole tap to zoom out, or you can triple tap and hold your finger down and then release your finger

photos in less than five minutes, even if you have thousands of them.

But what about photos that look similar? How to we deal with those?

Apple realises that many of our photo collections are full of similar photos so they have incorporated very clever software into the Photos app built into your iPhone or iPad to solve the problem.

This feature is called Memories and it creates a professional slideshow of your photos, timed to music with the touch of one button.

It is so smart that it analyses your photos for duplicates and similar photos and skips them in the slideshow.

Finally we can enjoy sharing our photos again without the embarrassment of “I was going to delete that”. This software is magic and will have you enjoying and sharing your photos like you always intended.

If you have issues with colour blindness you can try the negative screen settings.

Voice Access: If using a touch screen is difficult, the Voice Access app lets you control your device with spoken commands. Use your voice to open apps, navigate, and edit text handsfree.

Voice Access is currently in a limited beta release in English only.

Flash Notification: If you find it hard to hear your ring tone you can turn on Flash Notification and the flash lamp on the camera in the back of your device will flicker to notify you that you have a phone call or notification.

Touch and Hold Delay: This will change the duration of time that you must hold for any press and hold actions.

For those with dexterity issues, having a longer delay can help while navigating your device.

While there are a lot more accessibility options, and many are device-specific, I would suggest testing each one to see if it makes your experience a little easier to use.

Patricia has time for her imagination to run wild Patricia Earl has always had an active imagination but in retirement she has time to bring her visions to life, writes KAT DONAGHEY.

S

ince moving to Australia from New Zealand in 2012 Patricia has pursued what she calls her “very expensive hobby” self-publishing children’s books.

Writing rhyme and painting colourful watercolour animals helps fill the lonely days living apart from her husband Bob, a Londoner, who prefers to live in England where Patricia cannot access her New Zealand pension.

“When I moved here I struggled with

retirement because it’s not for me. I’m restless. That’s why I got stuck into the writing,” she says.

“The days were too long on my own and I missed my husband and I didn’t know anybody and I thought ‘I’ve got to do something’ so I pulled out all my old stories and started doing the artwork.”

Patricia has created four books since 2014, which she wrote and painted from her tiny eclectic apartment.

A fifth book, The Peacock Palace Elephant, is currently with her new publisher InHouse Publishing.

“I struggled with retirement because it’s not for me. I’m restless” The creative process stimulates Patricia’s vibrant imagination and injects youthful joy into her retirement years as she delves into a boundless world of “naughty” animals.

Her books are based on playful characters, such as Moki the cat, Pippy the possum and the deaf Peacock King who rents an elephant.

As Patricia describes their stories, a cheeky smile lights up her face.

“I like naughty animals; they’re fascinating really,” she says.

“They’re not supposed to be naughty these days but they are. People say I’ve also got a naughty smile.”

Patricia was raised the youngest of six children on a farm in Katikati in New Zealand and spent her days “running wild” and cuddling cows.

As the baby of the family she was inclined to naughtiness which is reflected in the characters of whom she speaks as

She lived in England for 15 years where she worked as a marriage registrar in Westminster before returning to New Zealand and then migrating to Australia.

Her husband visits during the year, and she flies to England when she can, but in between she has found new stimulation with her animal friends.

Patricia says new ideas often “creep in” at 2 o’clock in the morning as she lies in bed and she welcomes them like gifts.

“Oh, I love it,” she exclaims. “It’s awful when a story’s done. That’s the problem now, I’ve run out of ideas and have to start again.”

A love of poetry and Shakespeare (she has a BA English Literature) inspires her writing while the artwork reflects her

devotion to colour, like the vibrant blue of her nail polish and kitchen.

Patricia says it’s important for her to remain original both in her work and life.

She doesn’t dress conventionally and certainly doesn’t live that way with her husband away for months on end.

She will admit only to being over the age of 60 (laughing that age is “ghastly”) but as long as she has animal friends for company, she says she remains young at heart.

Your Home Care Package – it’s personal With the recent government reforms, about one million older Australians now have more control over their home care packages, but, writes KENDALL MORTON, how does it help

W

ell, it starts with having an open conversation with your care provider. Your care package is there to meet your personal needs and goals. To make this work, it’s essential that you feel valued and heard by your care provider.

How you use your home care package will depend on this conversation and ones that follow. Once goals are clear, the care provider will make a personal care plan with you.

Everyone is different. For one person a major goal could be feeling safe and happy at home. For someone else, it may be getting to choir once a week and managing back pain with various therapies.

Of course, care providers have a duty of care to assist with your personal needs, such as showering and dressing, but they also have a commitment to help you maintain and improve your quality of life.

If that means a morning at

bingo on Tuesdays or lunch with your bowling mates, then your care plan can include that.

People are often on home care packages due to diminished physical abilities. My point here is don’t let your world shrink because of reduced physical ability. We know from research that being engaged in the community is good for our psychological well-being and our physical health too. It staves off depression and broadens our perspective.

So, remember to talk to your provider about what you’ve enjoyed in the past and now need help with or what new social activities you’d like to try.

If you have done your Christmas shopping every July for the last 50 years and now you need help, your care plan should take this into account.

You may also be able to use your home care package for technology and equipment.

If an item will help you stay in touch with other people or

enhance your safety, then it’s a valid purchase. For example, an iPad or a personal alarm could be considered.

It’s also possible to use your funds for appointments with a physiotherapist or other allied health professionals.

If improved mobility and strength are important to you that will be reflected in your goals and your care plan.

In the end, home care packages can be quite flexible.

It’s about talking through what you need and making it happen.

If you need help to get to bed at 10pm at night, that can be organised. Home care packages are there to make your life easier and that all starts with having an open conversation with your care provider. Tell them about your goals and your routines and go from there.

Muscling up delivers rewards

THE Burnie Brae Healthy Connections exercise clinic launched its Muscling Up Against Disability research project a year ago with the objective of evaluating the effectiveness of progressive resistance training as a service model of care, to help stave off later life disability and live independently for longer.

Muscling Up Against Disability (MUAD) is supported by Australian Department of Health funding and is being conducted by Burnie Brae exercise physiologists in partnership with the University of Queensland, Bond University, St Vincent’s Health Australia and HUR Australia.

‘FIND YOUR FAMILY’ FOR BEGINNERS THE Queensland Family History Society (QFHS) is offering a beginner’s course in family history research commencing on June 26.

The six-week course is designed to involve participants in the process of sound genealogical research and to teach the most up-to-date methods of family history searching using a variety of resources.

All participants will have the opportunity to use all the resources at the QFHS Library and Resource Centre.

This means that any non-members who enrol in the course will have complimentary use of the library for the duration of the course.

In addition, everyone who enrols in the course will receive a copy of Shauna Hicks’s recent book Where do I start?: a brief guide to researching your family in Australia and New Zealand.

The course will be based around this publication and it will provide a handy reference guide.

It offers beginners a chance to find out what is available in the field of family history research, as it is not a case of just typing in your name and letting the computer or subscription website do the rest.

The course will be held at the QFHS Library and Resource Centre, at 58 Bellevue Ave, Gaythorne, from 7.30 pm on June 26. Cost, including the booklet, is $50 for QFHS members and $75 for non-members.

The MUAD Project has delivered 24 weeks of twice weekly progressive resistance plus balance training to more than 240 adults aged 65 to 92 years.

Participants have reported benefits from their participation as reduced disability, falls risk and chronic disease symptoms plus increased upper and lower body strength and cognitive wellbeing.

Dr Tim Henwood, who is leading the research team, said it was very satisfying to see how participation had led to incredible positive change in the lives of all participants.

“We are seeing the difference that this program is making. Some have stopped needing a walking aid, some are more capable around the house, some take less pain medication, some feel they have more energy and some talk about experiencing life again in a positive way,” he said.

“However, if there is one thing all the older participants in the MUAD Project have experienced, it is an improved life.”

Karla Buchanan, 78, is an enthusiastic

advocate for the program. She came to the program with some existing health problems, including a battle with bowel cancer that ended with a large portion of her bowel being removed.

She is happy to share examples of how the MUAD Program has changed her life.

“Now I can bend over to dig weeds, cut bushes and trim them,” she says. “I can do more cleaning in the house, and I can go shopping without my walker and shop for longer than I could before. Exercise gave this all to me.”

The program is proof that with targeted exercise, and in particular progressive resistance training, individuals can increase their health and wellbeing.

Burnie Brae, based at Chermside, is a not-for-profit community organisation founded in 1984.

It is now a vibrant hub of active, social, leisure and health activities, and provides a broad range of community services to over 50s.

A layer of good, thick mulch improves soil to retain precious moisture and cut down on watering

es, it’s quite true! We’re so afraid our plants will die of thirst that we wastefully pamper them with water rather than instituting a good regime.

Yet water, one of the planet’s most precious resources, is also expensive and so as we are in the dry time of year, learn to use water wisely rather than wantonly in your garden.

Improve your soil: A bit of effort now will reap dividends later. Buy in good soil if you don’t have it, add sand and gypsum to clay soil, add mushroom or good quality general compost to sand.

A rich, loamy soil retains water well but most southeast Queensland soils need a lot of improvement. Water will just run off clay or rocky soil and be wasted; sandy soils will absorb large amounts of moisture and dry out fast.

Mulch, mulch and mulch again: This is the slowest but most effective way to get water-retentive soil. Water in the morning: Most plants don’t take up water at night so precious moisture is lost by night watering. Early in the morning is the best time, before the powerful Queensland sun soaks up all moisture before the plants can make use of it.

However, plants of tropical origin – for example those in a Balinese-style garden – are the exception to the rule and are best watered in the evening or at night. Such plants do better with misting rather than heavy root watering and this technique uses less water.

Automated systems are a good thing but need regular maintenance to see that jets are not blocked and that nozzles/ drippers are reaching the plant root zones. They should not be used when you are away for any length of time unless supervised by a helpful neighbour.

A good watering twice a week is usually enough for any garden, except in very hot, windy weather. It’s certainly enough during our winter.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, LIZ DAWSON says exercise really is the key to a better life.

T

here, I’ve said it again but this week, the proof is in the pudding with research linking obesity to chronic kidney disease (CKD).

We all know that being overweight is bad for our health and most of us would naturally think of our cardiovascular health, but what about the heart’s forgotten cousin, the kidneys.

What do kidneys even do? After all, can’t you survive with only one?

In fact, your kidneys are so important that you were given two in case one went kaput! Kidneys play a major role in making the body work. They are like turbo cleaners, sorting out the good stuff from the bad stuff and cleaning your blood while they’re at it.

They are environmentally friendly little beans too, recycling the good waste from the bad and processing 200 litres of blood around the body.

And don’t forget they are the reason we can wee, making urine from the excess fluid and unwanted chemical waste in your blood.

So, when none of that works, the body suffers and therein lies the importance of eating well, drinking plenty of water and exercising regularly

to maintain good kidney and overall health. In my career I’ve seen my fair share of chronic disease patients and helped hundreds of people suffering from diseases like CKD to improve their quality of life through nutrition and exercise.

I have also helped many people reduce their risk of developing chronic conditions like CKD, by reducing excess weight and improving the blood filtering and metabolic process.

Statistics reveal that 63 per cent of Australians are overweight or obese, putting us at increased risk of kidney disease. Projections forecast the number of people on dialysis and requiring transplants to rise by 60 per cent between 2011 and 2020. (The Australian Kidney Foundation, Kidney Health Report 2017).

The good news is, we can fight the predictors and get onboard the exercise train, aka the treadmill, and improve our kidney health and overall wellbeing.

CONSULTATION for a single aged care Quality Framework to be introduced from July next year is now underway.

Consultation papers about two key parts of the framework are now open for comment – a draft single set of quality standards for all aged care services; and options for a streamlined approach for assessing provider performance against this single set of standards.

Anyone who is interested in the quality of aged care, including those who use or provide aged care, are invited to comment.

“We have an opportunity to shape the

future of an affordable, sustainable and flexible aged care sector and the two consultation papers are a crucial part of this process,” Aged Care Minister Ken Wyatt.

“The papers propose changes that will apply to Australian Government subsidised aged care services including for residential care, home care, flexible care, the Commonwealth Home Support Programme and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flexible Aged Care Program.”

He said the proposal would affect consumers, their families and carers, aged care organisations, staff of organisations, and other professionals in the aged care sector and related sectors.

The closing date for submissions is Friday 21 April 2017.

HEARING LOSS NUMBERS RISE ONE in every six Australians has some form of hearing loss, and this figure is predicted to rise as the population ages.

“By 2050, that rate is expected to be one in every four Australians,” Minister for Aged Care Ken Wyatt said. “If you notice something different about your hearing, visit your local GP, because once hearing has been damaged it can never be fully repaired.”

The federal government provides funding for the Hearing Services Program so eligible people can access a range of fully or partially subsidised hearing services.

In 2015-2016, almost 700,000 clients received help under the program’s voucher system, with more than 1.3 million services delivered.

This is about two completely different lifestyles and at times, values. We meet a handful of affluent white women who live a comfortable lifestyle assisted by the coloured maid who does everything from raising babies to polishing the silver.

The home help, especially old hands like Aibileen, know exactly how to walk through the minefield without being sacked at the whim of the lady of the house.

Enter Skeeter an exuberant tomboy with visions of being a writer. She needs material and realises Aibileen is an intelligent woman and so begins a clandestine relationship.

These are troubled times in Jackson and what these women dared to show is remarkable. Helen Reddy’s I Am Woman kept coming into my head.

This historical fiction deals with relationships between US southern states white women and their black maids in the 1960s.

Themes of social class, racism, cruelty, inequality and sisterhood are skilfully woven in a good story. Black maids raise the white children with great love and affection but are not trusted with the silver and using the wrong toilet can result in dismissal, a beating or even death. The author does a good job in trying to understand the thoughts, emotions and hard, thankless life of the black maids. With the rise of Trumpism and the erosion of civil rights in the US this book is a timely read. A good book and a great movie 7/10.

BOOK review JOHN KLEINSCHMIDT I have mixed feelings about this book. I found it a little underwhelming in its portrayal of the race issues in America in the ’60s, although to be fair, the author may have deliberately downplayed the more serious racial tensions of the time in favour of writing for a predominantly female audience.

I found the stories of the two negro maids Abileen and Minny and the role of the courageous Skeeter in documenting negro maids subservience to their shallow and narcissistic white employers enjoyable and believable.

However, the subplots around Skeeter’s romantic interest, and the poor, beautiful white girl Celia who “married up” were far from convincing. A good read for some, boring for others.

This 2009 novel is the story of black maids working in white Mississippi during the early 1960s through the lives of three extraordinary women.

Skeeter, 22, has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy until there’s a ring on her finger.

Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her 17th white child. Minny, her best friend, is short, fat, and arguably the sassiest woman in Mississippi. They come together for a risky, clandestine project that changes a town, and the way women-mothers, daughters, caregivers and friends view one another.

I loved this book from page one. The writing style is simple and maybe not the greatest literary effort, but an easy read.

Set in Jackson, Mississippi in the ’60s, during the Civil rights movement, it is the story is of three strong, very different women and their complex relationship - two black maids and one young white girl. Skeeter was brought up by her maid who has mysteriously disappeared. Skeeter has the opportunity to have some work published and decides to write a book about the life of the help and the discrimination they live through. The help eventually come together and tell their stories. Stockett brings these characters and their complexities to life and deals with racism and inequality brilliantly.

MARY BARBER The author conveyed the life of black maids in Mississippi in the early 1960s very effectively. There were the daily humiliations. It was “yes Ma’am, no Ma’am”. There was a lot of love in the book too, as these black women were nannies as well as maids. One of Aibileen’s great fears was that the little girl she cared for daily and loves deeply may grow up to despise black people. Stockett showed the insidious way that a black family’s life could be destroyed if they fell out of favour with their white masters, or mistresses. The maids took a huge risk in telling their stories. With just three main characters to focus on, I got to know them and care about them. However, I found the book about 150 pages too long.

This book captured my attention from the first page. Perhaps it was because it was written in the language of a coloured servant, but more likely it was because the words immediately set the scene of the inequality between the characters.

The mind boggles to realise how coloured servants were trusted to raise white babies from birth, yet were made to use “coloured” toilets.

For me, the characters came alive. I have not seen the movie because I do not want to spoil the pictures in my mind of Skeeter, Aibileen and Minnie, in fact all the characters. The women were virtually owned by the white bosses and even though daring to tell their experiences, their fear of being found out pulsed through the pages. To balance this palpable fear, the writer introduced humour, especially via Minnie and a solid sisterhood. I totally recommend it.

Chronic pain is not all in your head Unless you have suffered chronic pain, it is very difficult to imagine the stress it places on a person’s life and those around them, writes clinical psychologist DR CLAIRE JENSEN.

W

ithout intervention, chronic pain can significantly reduce a person’s quality of life, lead to sleep problems, exhaustion, stress, relationship and work dysfunction, as well as mental health problems.

According to Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) one in five Australian adults suffer from both severe chronic pain and either depression or other mood disorders, costing the country $35 billion a year.

Despite this, it is only in the last two decades or so that chronic pain has received increased research and funding.

We now know much more about how we can support sufferers to manage their pain levels, reduce the vicious downward cycle of pain and improve quality of life.

Like most modern medicine, taking a holistic approach is considered best practice and this extends to chronic pain management, where

practitioners take a biopsychosocial approach assessing the biological, psychological and social aspects of the person’s situation.

Many clients avoid seeing a psychologist as they are worried others will think “your pain is all in your head!” but cognitive strategies, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness and relaxation can be just as important as pain medication or physiotherapy.

Pain is a subjective experience and thus whatever pain the client describes is the true experience for them. Pain is certainly not “all in a person’s head” but the brain and body are closely linked and thus it is a great asset to learn how to access the brain’s natural medicine cabinet – how to assist the brain to relax and release helpful chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine.

A clinical psychologist can help work through the daily struggles that present, offering

strategies to help an individual manage pain, improve mood and sleep, as well as recognise how unhelpful thoughts feed into the pain cycle.

This in turn leads to an increased quality of life. Many chronic pain suffers feel trapped within debilitating negative thoughts that influence mood, memory, function and ability to enjoy everyday life.

CBT has been extensively researched for its positive effect on managing negative thoughts associated with pain, through adaptive coping skills, such as distraction and relaxation.

Another more recent technique embraced by health professionals around the world is mindfulness. Leading the way, Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn brought mindfulness to the forefront of chronic pain management to separate the person’s thoughts, moods and emotions from the pain itself.

APP FORGES CONNECTIONS WITH DEMENTIA

One of the most common complaints that practitioners and doctors hear from patients is that they are tired all the time, but help is available, writes TRUDY KITHER.

Anyone caring for someone with dementia will know the art of conversation can become a labour of love.

A new app developed by New Zealand Company, AmuseIT, is bringing people together through conversation thanks to more than 1000 simple, visual, quiz questions.

Developed specifically for people with dementia and in consultation with them and their families and carers, the app helps bridge the gaps through cognitive stimulation and reminiscence.

The AmuseIT app can be easily downloaded on to a tablet or iPad and used by carers, family and friends to facilitate a shared experience based on imagery and questions.

The visuals are prompts to encourage a conversation and the quiz questions stimulate decision making and memory.

The app supports cognitive activity through rekindling of memory, recognition of objects, problem solving and coordination.

D

ata shows that up to 25 per cent of patients suffer or have suffered from prolonged fatigue. Fatigue affects the nervous system which is a major part of the body’s control mechanism, coordinating the activities of the organs with one other.

This allows the body to coordinate changes in its external and internal environment.

As this control is affected by a dense network of fibres that impulses travel along (like telephone wires), the system is supported by complex relay stations in ascending order of sophistication throughout the central nervous system to the brain.

The brain is the coordination centre for keeping all the body’s functions integrated with its needs in a changing world. The mind can be seen as the consciousness of the brain’s activities.

The aim is to accept the mind and body as one, as indivisible facets of the whole person.

The main interaction between us and the outside world is the nervous system.

When the function of that system in controlling the body’s main internal systems is disturbed due to perceived

tensions, it results in a disturbance that is as real as trains, cars and telephone stations. The real nature of nervous conditions are as functional disorders resulting from perceived tension.

Tensions produce the tension, which in turn creates more tensions. While there are many potential factors in fatigue, a lot of them affect the same biological pathway creating a roadmap where treatments can be focused.

By addressing the common denominators of fatigue and also the underlying factors, it is possible to provide a quick solution for improvement in symptoms. One of the most common is the mitochondria of the cell (the cell’s powerhouse of energy).

It has the main responsibility of generating energy in every cell of the body. Science has found there is widespread mitochondrial dysfunction in fatigued patients. More specifically, the mitochondria have been found to be enlarged and to contain damaged respiratory chain constituents, DNA mutations and obvious defects in energy production.

Coenzyme Q10 (COQ10) is similar to a “rescue remedy” for mitochondria as it

has been shown to correct mitochondrial dysfunction in fatigued states and provide obvious benefits to the fatigued.

As COQ10 has a low bioavailability state, patients will get a higher therapeutic result by using a form that has enhanced absorption.

While most of the mitochondria determine the cell’s energy status, the brain uses 20 per cent of our total energy output. It’s no wonder the fatigued person complains of “brain fog”, poor memory and word recall and slowed motor skills and reaction time.

Artist Brett Whiteley’s story premieres.

oung at Heart, the world’s only film festival catering to film lovers over 60, comes to Brisbane this month.

Presented for the first time by Palace Cinemas, the festival has a specially curated selection of intense dramas, cracking comedies, and riveting documentaries.

Highlights include the Australian premiere of the period piece Viceroy’s House starring Gillian Anderson, Michael Gambon and Hugh Bonneville.

Based on the true story of India’s final Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten, who lived

with 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants, the film is set during the 1947 partition of the British Indian Empire into India and Pakistan.

The late Australian artist Brett Whiteley comes under the spotlight in the Australian premiere of the documentary Whiteley while the moving drama Tommy’s Honour starring Sam Neill, focuses on the relationship between Scottish father and son and how their unique bond gave birth to the modern game of golf.

The Secret Scripture starring Vanessa Redgrave recounts the fictional diaries of Roseanne McNulty, who has been confined to an asylum for most of her life.

There will also be special retrospective screenings of the 1968 film The Lion in Winter featuring Katharine Hepburn, Peter O’Toole and Anthony Hopkins, about King Henry II and the extremes his family go to in an effort to coerce him into deciding which of his three sons will be the next king.

And that’s just a taste of the program especially chosen to appeal to the over 60 audience.

QPAC CHOIR REVISITS ABBA MANIA THE QPAC Choir will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the arrival of 1970s super group ABBA for their first tour Down Under.

In March 1977, they toured to every capital city in Australia – except Brisbane.

ABBA Mania was in full flight at that time and there was a huge outcry from the Brisbane fans.

Even premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen, wrote a personal letter to the Swedish super group without success.

BBC pipes and drums meet Queensland Pops Orchestra in Celtic spectacular

T

he Brisbane Boys’ College Pipes and Drums will be debuting with the Queensland Pops Orchestra in the lead-up to their appearance at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo next year.

It will be part of a Celtic extravaganza with music from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the broader Celtic nations.

The BBC Pipe Band originally was a Fife and Drum Band formed as part of the Cadet Corps in 1939.

Pipes were introduced in 1940 when Piper and Lance-Corporal Robert Lawrie introduced his skill to the College community. Dressed in kilts of the Red Cameron tartan, the band functioned, predominantly accompanying the Cadet Corps, until 1945.

No band featured again in College life until a reformation in 1959.

Wearing Ancient Hunting Sinclair tartan kilts (1960-1977), it once again added colour to College and community

life with a high degree of ability and dedication to practice.

The current band tartan of Ancient Hunting MacLean, incorporating the College colours of green, white and black, was introduced in 1976 by a newlyformed band committee.

The band is required to play at a variety of events throughout the College, as well as representing Brisbane Boys’ College and providing a service to the wider community.

Performance includes school assemblies, sporting events, church services, Grand Concert, Sounds of Scotland Concert, BBC Open Day, Competitions, Speech Night and community events as well as Anzac Day. In recent years, there has been significant growth and interest in the BBC Pipe Band program with more than 80 boys learning to play or playing in the band.

Comedy of marital mishaps live at Sunnybank

C

amping and caravanning is something of an Aussie tradition and in Third week in August Sunnybank Theatre Group explores, laughs, cries and engages with a diverse group of campers, each with their own agenda as to why, how often and who, they choose for camping.

Campsites can be a happy, funny place and people generally mix and mingle – or so one would hope.

Take Sue, for example. She just wants some peace and quiet and to complete her novel but along comes inveterate and annoying campers Neville and Mary.

Neville knows everything about camping and is not unwilling to impart all his knowledge on unsuspecting campers, and not necessarily for the best. Maybe wellintentioned but certainly invasive.

He is supported by an equally dull and somewhat pompous wife. Together they

exact rules and regulations that most people want to ignore, however Neville is steadfast.

Add to the mix Mary’s suffering sister who comes along for the ride.

Tony and Jenny add an interesting twist to the whole camping experience and don’t necessarily conform to Neville’s bag of rules, or in Jenny’s case, any rules.

This is funny, thoughtprovoking and will bring back memories or a time when you had the energy to go camping.

The play by D.M. Larson and directed by Valerie Morgan, is about a group of women in detention who are given the task of cleaning up an abandoned theatre as a community service.

Drama classes are also supposed to help rehabilitate them as they are all serving

JOURNEY to the farthest reaches of the Sun’s planetary domain at Queensland Museum through the stunning photographic exhibition, Michael Benson’s Otherworlds: Visions of our Solar System.

Visitors can discover the intersection of art and science in 64 photographic images of the solar system based on scientific data from far-flung robotic spacecraft.

It reveals places of alien beauty combined with exotic sounds developed by English musician and composer Brian Eno, the father of ambient music.

The images have been created from raw data from digital archives of NASA and the European Space Agency to capture planetary landscapes as they might look if humans could visit and view them through their own eyes.

The first image was from 1967 and the most recent from New Horizons spacecraft when it swept past Pluto in 2015.

The exhibition continues until July 2. Entry is free.

The slow boat on the road to old Canton Sometimes trips don’t go entirely to plan, and as DALLAS SHERRINGHAM discovers to his detriment, the promised itinerary just doesn’t measure up.

M

ost travel stories paint the destinations in glowing terms with words like “stunning”, “amazing” and “superb”.

This is not a story like that.

This is the story about how wrong a day trip can go if you have a bad guide, a shambolic destination and an itinerary that is virtually impossible to follow.

Yet, it all started so well when I booked the day trip to Xiamen on our cruise ship.

It ran something like this: “Tour and shop in the exciting new city of Xiamen before experiencing the beautiful Chinese landscape as we take a leisurely trip to Guangzhou (formerly Canton).

Lunch at a traditional...” You get the drift.

I should have known something was wrong when our young Chinese guide led us off the ship and started running towards a fleet of buses.

Carrying a knee injury, there was no way I was running and at least half the tour group fell behind with me.

Now, when you get to a line of buses and everyone is wearing the same outfit

and all look the same, holding signs in Chinese, it gets a bit confusing. I finally found our bus after 10 minutes but rounding up the rest took a lot longer.

“We are running late so we will have to change the itinerary,” shrieked the tour guide.

Our shopping and sightseeing tour of downtown Xiamen lasted just one lap of the main street while we gawked out of the windows.

Xiamen looked like an interesting place and I was beginning to wish I had just spent the day there exploring independently.

The city is a modern port that has boomed from a seaside town. The air pollution is horrendous.

Our bus turned back on to the freeway and became embroiled in an hour-long traffic jam.

Finally we sped off in the direction of Guangzhou at high speed.

Our exploration of the countryside consisted of a toilet stop where the Chinese just glared at the tourists without any expression at all.

Suddenly the PA system blurted to life again: “We are running late so we will have to change the itinerary,” the guide shrieked again.

We finally arrived at Guangzhou and it turned out to be an impressive older city with no air pollution to speak of. We promptly stopped at an historic Muslim mosque.

Just why she seemed to think we would be interested in spending an hour and a half in the ruins was beyond me, but there we sat, slowly cooking in the hot sun.

Finally we moved off and she proudly announced we would be visiting a traditional old shopping and market precinct. After spending so long at the Muslim church we were finally going somewhere interesting.

We hopped off our bus at the top end of the market and she shrieked: “Five minutes here!”

I said: “No, we want longer” and most of the group stood firm with me. But not for long. continued over>

She started to run flat out towards the bus double-parked 100m away and most of the group went with her, all running down the street. It looked ridiculous. It was ridiculous.

I took a couple of photos and sauntered back to the bus at my own pace. There was a glare from the guide and the bus driver that made me shiver.

She jumped on the PA and screamed: “We have to change the itinerary because (glaring at me) some people have held us up”.

Next stop was the historic Temple of the Six Banyan Trees. We parked about

10 blocks away and once again our guide ran off down the street with some tour members trying to keep up.

The rest were strung along a 2km route. I did make it to the Temple, took one photo and then started walking back.

Finally, I had some time to chat with a couple of locals, visit a few shops and enjoy a coffee and an ice cream.

Life in Guangzhou is very traditional in every way and it was quite a culture shock for some of the less-travelled members of the group.

People lived on the street, they cooked on the street, they tossed

leftovers in the street – you get the drift.

After what seemed an eternity, our guide and her loyal band of followers returned and she yelled at my breakaway group: “You didn’t wait for me, I couldn’t find you”.

“Well, I guess we now are even sweetheart,” I said and climbed aboard the bus with some applause and laughter.

There are lessons to be learnt here and most of the problems were caused by my lack of research.

I wrongly thought the cruise line knew what it was doing, but, like many cruise lines, they had no idea how to organise a shore tour. Yet they still charged $175 for a disaster.

Next time I will research all the tours properly or maybe organise a local guide to show me around for $50.

If the shore tour doesn’t reach expectations, tell your shore tour manager on board. Enough complaints and he or she will have to act.

PS: I found out some days later when I made a complaint on board ship that the tour guides were actually college students learning English and did the tours to make extra cash and “talk the talk”.

That explains a lot. Maybe they are also training for track and field events at the Olympics?

WATCH FOR the tea scam To many Chinese, western visitors look like a walking bank deposit vault and they are eager to prise it open. One of the more common tools for that is the Shanghai tea house scam (also popular in Beijing, or anywhere in China for that matter).

Essentially, you are approached by – generally, but not limited to – a student or group of students who will offer to help you, ask you to take their photo and generally engage you in conversation. They become your new best friends and invite you to a tea house ceremony with them.

There, you are presented with teas to sample and all is hale and hearty until you are ready to leave.

By this time your new friends have disappeared and you are presented with a bill of up to $300 for a few cups of tea and no way to escape without paying.

Although it is well-documented and common, the scam can snag even wary travellers. The best way to avoid it is to be suspicious of anyone who wants to be your friend and never accept an invitation to join them for tea or a beer.

L

eaving Esperance after refuelling, collecting mail and exploring, we were on the road again heading for Cape Le Grand National Park and then on to the turnoff to Cape Arid NP. It is only 63km to the entry of the Cape Le Grand NP from Esperance, so there’s plenty of time to check out both camp sites in the park.

The drive from Esperance is by sealed roads to all locations with the exception of a twowheel drive unsealed road to Rossiter Bay which is regularly graded. Here you will find a small parking lot and a picturesque walk.

WA National Parks promote the trails in this area as “a walk on the wild side” and how true that is.

The Cape Le Grand Coastal Trail links many of the park’s coastal sections between Cape Le Grand Beach (western entrance to park) and Rossiter Bay (most eastern end) and

Rossiter Bay was named by explorer Edward Eyre after the captain of a whaling vessel. includes a hike up Frenchman Peak (262m and yes, that’s right, it’s not Frenchman’s) with panoramic views of the park and islands of the Recherche Archipelago.

On all the trails, many of them just a short stroll from the campground or car park of Hellfire Bay, Lucky Bay and

Thistle Cove, you will enjoy exceptional flora, spectacular granite formations, snow white sandy coves and magnificent views to the Great Southern Ocean.

Thistle Cove was named after John Thistle, the master of Matthew Flinders ship, HMS Investigator and it was here in

home to pygmy possums, kangaroos (some you will find leisurely hopping or just sleeping along the sheltered bays), colourful birds feasting on the nectar and lizards scurrying among the granite boulders and dense thickets of banksia.

The roads are excellent although very dusty as you travel through sand heaths, mallee and low granite hills with Russel Range and Tower Peak (600m) in the distance.

It was first named Cap Arride by French Admiral D’Entrecasteaux in 1792 but Flinders anglicised it to Cape Arid in 1802.

In the 1870s, the area, although remote, was promoted as having beautiful grassy plains and land cheap to buy.

There are ruins of homesteads and buildings around Thomas Fishery and Pine Hill.

Thomas Fishery is an historic site where, in the 1870s, a whaling station was established.

Hill Springs came about at around the same time when William Ponton ran sheep. He died in 1909 and, along with hardship and isolation, his family was forced to abandon the homestead. This wonderful wilderness is home to more than 1000 species of plants and 160 bird species with several threatened or endangered.

The most accessible campground is at Thomas River where in peak season, camp hosts will welcome you.

There are excellent,

reasonably new facilities due to a fire that went through and destroyed most of the flora and all the old amenities.

The campground has individual level campsites, some with incredible views over vegetation to the bay.

Other campsites are at

Thomas Fishery, Seal Creek, Jorndee Creek and Mt Ragged.

Fees apply and also operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

A local farmer who holidays at Thomas River regularly suggested we return in late winter and spring to see migrating whales passing by.

They come in so close to shore to de-barnacle on the large boulders that you can almost touch them.

There is 4WD beach access to drive all the way up the beach of Sandy Bight to Seal Creek and the other campgrounds.

Cape Arid NP forms an almost continuous nature conservation area all the way to the South Australian border.

You can also access this diverse park by walking trails near the coast on the Tagon Coastal Trail to Dolphin Cove and Len Otte Nature Trail.

Dr Livingstone was spot on The staggering beauty of Africa’s Victoria Falls captivates SEAN LUES, as much as it did the first European to come across them in 1855.

Victoria falls is the largest curtain of water in the world.

T

he Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, was named after his monarch by David Livingstone, a most notable missionary and explorer.

Livingstone is documented for being the first European to have seen the falls in November 1855, when he was completely in awe of the spectacle and wrote in his diary: “The whole scene was extremely beautiful; the banks and

islands dotted over the river are adorned with sylvan vegetation of great variety of colour and form … no one can imagine the beauty of the view from anything witnessed in England.

“It had never been seen before by European eyes; but scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.”

The beauty aside, one cannot describe the feeling of realising the sheer power,

feeling the ground shake and listening to the deafening roar as up to 750 million litres of water pour over the 1.7km wide cliff face every minute.

It drops more than 100m, pounding on to the basalt rock below so the spray rises back up to 500m high and visible up to 50km away.

This is where the local name is derived from: Mosi oa Tunya - the smoke that thunders!

It is this spray falling back down that covers the surrounding area (don’t forget to take a raincoat) and has formed the Victoria Falls rainforest.

It is not a true rainforest, but impressive none-the-less, with huge ebony, mahogany and fig trees among others.

There is a fantastic array of diversity and colour in the birds attracted to this lush area.

Elephants, warthog, mongoose and baboon are common around the town and the surrounding national parks are home for vast herds of animals.

Yet it is up in the air that one gets to see the enormity of the falls – how Livingstone would have known this I don’t know, but a “flight of the Angels” is something that I would consider mandatory for any visitor.

Depending on your level of comfort, this can be done in a small four-seater aircraft, a microlight (you being the only passenger) or a helicopter.

From the air, one can appreciate how the gentle-looking Zambezi River meanders across the flat and vast areas of Africa, then suddenly crashes over the falls before hurtling along the narrow gorges.

It is through these gorges that some of the best one-day white water rafting activities are undertaken daily by scores of tourists. There is also bungee jumping off the bridge close by, gorge swinging or zip-lining.

It is in north-western Zambia that a

Spray rises from the base of the falls. little bubbling spring emerges, starting the mighty Zambezi River on its 2700km journey through five other countries – Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and finally Mozambique – before emptying into the Indian Ocean.

For three days once a month, those who are lucky enough to be there and if there are no clouds, will see a Lunar Rainbow, or Moonbow as some refer to it.

On the night of the full moon and a day either side, the National Parks Department allows special entry into the falls for tourists to experience this.

There are other Europeans who have tried to lay claim to having seen the Victoria Falls first, but it is said that none could be credible for one simple reason – that anyone who did would have had to tell the whole world of this phenomenon of beauty and magnificence.

Which is exactly what David Livingstone did!
