Studies suggest that if the brain is not stimulated, the potential to “forget” how to hear is great and closely related to the length of time your brain goes without stimulation.

The longer you ignore hearing loss the less options you will have available to treat your hearing condition.

A number of studies have come to light over the last few years showing a link between hearing loss and dementia. Specifically, a pair of studies out of Johns Hopkins found that

A

dear old — and I use the term affectionately — friend of some four decades, celebrates her birthday a few weeks before me, so over the years we have always mailed each other a birthday card. We still do.

As the years have flown by, the theme of the cards has changed and looking back, they well represent our changing lives. Cards that started out with work puns became relationships, became mumsy, became travel ... and now, she has just retired and become a grandmother, so it changes again. This year’s card featured two grey-haired women chatting in a gallery.

One says “look at those two old women over there” and the other replies, “that’s a mirror. It’s us”.

Contents Pauline du Reitz discusses the subject this month as she ponders whether what we see when we look in the mirror is an accurate reflection of who we are or what we think we look like or, as is increasingly becoming a catchphrase, are we the “invisible” people. (I must add this can be an advantage. Nobody takes much notice of an old girl, so she can get away with doing as she pleases).

Claude Tranchant, who at 64 completed a most remarkable journey, tells her story in this month’s Our People section which is dedicated to those who prove age is no barrier and there’s no substitute for rich life experience.

She says the whole time she was walking for 100 days covering 2500km, she was always seeing herself as the 16-year-old girl who had never had a chance to discover herself or to cope alone in the world.

It’s a common theme as, for any number of reasons, many begin to tackle life on their own.

Mirror, mirror on the wall …

Retirement, super, pensions, health and housing seem to be the topics of the day for anyone over 55, but, asks PAULINE DU REITZ, who do we see when we look in the mirror and does our reflection honestly capture who we are in our own minds?

Myra Timmerman is still lithe and energetic at 82, with a flexibility that is the envy of many half her age.

ur culture has changed in recent years. The focus has turned to looking youthful and trendy.

Many people in our community post their images and activities on social media and measure their worth by how many “likes” or comments they receive.

Younger generations are looking and even behaving like celebrities with selfies now de rigeur.

I recently was asked to speak to a group of Year 8 and 9 students on the topic of Understanding and Managing Bullying.

During question time, I asked them how they saw themselves and what they wanted. I was shocked when a large number said they just wanted to be famous.

They wanted celebrity status and would do anything to get it. They also

said that measuring up to social media standards frequently produced anxiety.

Girls spent a lot of time watching YouTube videos about makeup and fashion and the boys were fixated on sport. Both seemed to have a strong focus on body image.

We live in a culture with an emphasis on meeting individual needs. Stereotypes of youth, beauty and celebrity are championed. Those who don’t live up to the stereotype are not as likely to be seen or valued as an individual.

In contrast, the over 55s come from a culture where family and community contribution and building a future for others and our country were the major values and activities.

As we age, whether we see ourselves in the mirror or a photograph, there is often a gap between what we see and how we feel about what we see.

Asked how he saw himself, Knox replied, “I see an aging body, but inside I still feel young and energetic”.

He has recently retired from radio, but still works part-time flying planes. He got his pilot’s licence in 1973.

His attitude is positive and his lifestyle includes daily swimming and walking. He says he was inspired by Sir Frank Moore of Brisbane radio fame.

As a young man, Knox worked for Sir Frank in Longreach and then followed him to Brisbane during the heady days of Colour Radio 4IP, led by Sir Frank.

them because of their age.

I wanted to know what they were doing to keep the fires of interest burning in their lives.

The group ranged from those with a public profile to the ordinary people who, like most of us, are simply getting on with the job, travelling, volunteering or participating in social or activity groups.

Veteran radio broadcaster John Knox, who soon turns 79, said that a few years ago, he walked into his school reunion and saw a lot of old people. He then realised that he was one of them.

Knox’s perception of himself is not unusual.

There are times in our lives when we feel better than how we think we look, and there are times when the image that we see tells a story of illness, sadness or grief.

His own radio career spanned 50 years. Today, he is a great advocate of approaching the latter years with energy and determination.

David Greenwood, one of the “Good Guys” from the early days of 4IP in the late 1960s and early 1970s, is still working as general manager of a cluster of regional radio stations in Queensland.

Also mentored by Sir Frank, he believes that work keeps him going and says that if he couldn’t work, he would need to find something else to keep his mind active.

“I started work when I was in my mid-teens. Sir Frank taught me the value of hard work. In some ways he was extremely tough, but he modelled to us that striving for excellence and having good people around you were two very important factors,” he says.

Both men agreed that the skills and experience of older people are no longer valued.

I recently heard a 40-something media personality discussing the dilemma that she and her friends faced – whether or not to have Botox.

She discussed the pressure she was putting herself under to conform to how we are “supposed” to look.

Myra Timmerman, at 82 is more energetic and sprightly than many others her junior.

She has been teaching yoga for 40 years and still presents four classes a week.

Her U3A class numbers are huge, made up of both women and men over 55.

Myra says she feels confident in herself, knowing that what she does is the best for her. She also gains great satisfaction from knowing that she is offering something to others that affects their strength and flexibility.

Radio broadcaster John Knox ruled the airwaves and, nudging 79, is still going.

“I have noticed that people of all ages, in their 60s, 70s and even 80s, who come to yoga classes change their demeanor.

They take responsibility for their bodies and become more physically comfortable,” she says.

Asked how she thought most women of that age bracket see themselves, she says there is generally a strong lack of acceptance and appreciation of the body as it ages.

“When I look at myself, I remember how lucky I am to be alive, still planning, working and travelling,” Myra says. “I enjoy everything that I do.”

At the Buderim Men’s shed, I was surprised to hear how men saw themselves.

Many believe that most people see older men as irrelevant. Others see age as a messenger, letting them know they might not always be capable.

One man told of how he had been in a coffee shop and was about to carry his coffee to the table when a younger customer took the cup from him and placed it on a table.

Rather than appreciating the kindness, he felt resentment because it indicated he was being seen and treated as someone who was old and therefore incapable.

Another was more positive, saying he had appreciated it when he was using a walking aid and people had stood back for him to pass.

Most of the men said that they felt younger than they looked.

“If we worried about physical deterioration, it would destroy our ability to enjoy the now,” Angus Ross said.

Research has suggested that many men have difficulty in retirement and develop an illness or die within 18 months of quitting work.

After a life of structure and achievement, life lacked many of the positive validations they knew.

In the same study, it was suggested that women coped with retirement differently. They handled retirement

more positively and had more ability to handle complexity.

More women were involved in volunteer work where they enjoyed social interaction; and women had a more active role in extended family dynamics.

Vicky, who works in a shoe shop, came up with one of the best answers to my question, “how do you see yourself?”.

“When I look in the mirror, I see wisdom. I see a face and a body that has moved through time, learning from the good and bad stuff,” she said.

When we look in the mirror, we evaluate our standard of “OK-ness” in life.

This feeling comes from three sources – achievements, interactions with significant others and self-acceptance, or how we acknowledge who we are.

With regard to how we see ourselves and how others see us, there is a tendency, as we grow older, to step back and to stop contributing to society.

THREE QUESTIONS THAT COULD OR SHOULD BE ASKED ARE: • What is happening to our culture and communities and the values and attitudes that are emerging ?

• If we consider that individualism and superficial standards and activities in our culture and communities might be detrimental to younger ones and their wellbeing, are we, as potential older mentors, prepared to take a stand, comment or mentor?

• Are we prepared to personally honour and celebrate the changes in the way we see and value ourselves?

Current culture seems to value mentors who are “someone” or celebrities rather than people who have achieved and can pass on knowledge, skills and experience.

Maybe, instead of stepping back from life, we could be still make a difference.

THE informative Watch your Language article by David Parmiter, on the origin of the humble potato (YT Jul) reiterates how Europeans were first introduced to this, previously deemed “cattle food”.

Being of European origin, I know how my own mother refused to offer us pumpkin, as new immigrants in the early ’50s, for the same reason that pre- Drake and Raleigh Europeans never considered the benefits of potatoes.

Luckily, I grew up here in a multicultural environment, educating my gourmet tastes, having tasted roast pumpkin and lauding the delight of foods we were denied at home.

It took a lot of convincing my mother of the benefits of pumpkin, which were not lost on my own children.

In Dutch, potato is translated as “earth apple” as in French and German. There is an old Dutch saying that what the farmer doesn’t know, he doesn’t eat.

Pumpkins are common European cattle food, but it is the cattle who are the healthier, to the detriment of the population which has been misled for centuries. How would our Australian roast meals go without roast potatoes and

pumpkin as staples, as it has been for two centuries?

Eloise Rowe WE may be the Baby Boomers but the X and Y generations seem to be the “Me” generations. I have been concerned by the loose term “intergenerational wealth” I have heard this being used as a kind of disenfranchised phrase to justify living in a government sponsored home and deserving it.

It seems to me that people have short memories. In World War II, my father fought in New Guinea against the Japanese and I never saw him again after I was two. Apparently he had bad nerves after the war. My mother said he had changed a lot and sadly these soldiers and their families received no assistance.

We did live in a wrought-iron army hut for 18 months, but then my mother left my dad and returned home to live with her mother.

My husband’s father passed away when he was 33, leaving a wife and four children aged two to 10 alone in the world.

So no “intergenerational” for us.

We realised our position quite young

and studied at night, went to work, paid our taxes for 75 years all up, and after improving our lot by extra hard yards – no drinking, no smoking etc – and raising a family, we are now aged 70 and 72. We receive no government financial assistance. We did receive a small part pension after my husband retired aged 69, not because he didn’t want to work, but because he had major heart malfunctions.

We could do with a bit of help ourselves now. I have osteoarthiritis bone on bone in my left knee and my husband is frail and failing. Because we don’t get any pension we can’t get subsidised assistance for harder home jobs.

This is just a short story of one of the marginalised Australian Baby Boomer families.

Friends in our peer group whose fathers didn’t go to war have had a very different life to us, one of support both emotionally and financially and they all managed to get the pension even though they retired younger than my husband did.

Looking back, we should have probably not been so generous and kind to our kids, but then we knew how hard it was for us, so we tried to make their lives better.

Food for thought.

I was pleased to read Judy Campbell’s comments re the English language (YT Jun) and empathise with her completely.

Further to the faux pas Judy mentioned, I am sure she also shares my disillusionment with the following usages that are so common in today’s generation: Me and dad, her and her husband, yous, eveythink, somethink, “the other day my husband says to me … and I says back…”

Then there’s “she goes” instead of “she says”, the residents “that” rather than residents “who”, overuse of “you know” and “like”. The list goes on.

Is the internet or schooling responsible?

Language, any language, spoken or written is how we communicate with one another and good language is like listening to a beautiful melody.

Sadly, today that melody is becoming a cacophony. When I hear any of the above I cringe at the assault on my ears. Even TV presenters are guilty of some of these.

Val Downes OK. I give up! After complaining about that dreadful American word “snuck”, I find it has now crossed the Atlantic. It was bad enough when John Marsden and Ian Rankin used it, but I recently heard a character in an episode of Dr Who use it.

Oh for the days of innocence There was a time when children could go on camping holidays and not have any adults interfering with their adventures, writes DAVID PARMITER.

S

wallows and Amazons was the first of 12 books written by a middleaged retired journalist called Arthur Ransome. His characters John, Susan, Titty and Roger Walker set sail in Swallow and were soon joined by their friends Nancy and Peggy Blackett in their boat Amazon – two 12’ wooden dinghies in the Lake District, six children having fun together, and no adults allowed.

Mrs Walker would row across with fresh milk and other provisions, and check that Susan (as eldest girl) was being “mummy” to the two younger ones.

Captain John was in overall charge.

When Mummy had written to Daddy overseas asking if it was permissible, their children going off on their own in sailing boats unsupervised, he had replied, “If they’re stupid they’ll drown; if they aren’t stupid they won’t drown.”

Ransome had had a brief but mysterious and dubious career in Moscow, writing for the Daily News and the Manchester Guardian.

The Red and White Russians were fighting among themselves and after the Revolution in 1917, established the communist Soviet State.

Ransome journeyed by train as far east as Stalingrad to report back to England on the conditions of the Russian people under the repressive and bloodthirsty tyranny of the Bolsheviks.

This was his first career.

He regarded himself as simply an observer and photographic recorder, but the English Government thought differently. His lengthy and close involvement with the Russian politicians (as a journalist) made him a person of interest in the corridors of Westminster.

He later became romantically involved with 23-year old Evgenia Shelepina, who just happened to be the private secretary to Leon Trotsky. When news of this reached London, the English Government immediately labelled Ransome as a likely Russian spy.

But he was simply a newspaper reporter accurately covering the changing life in Russia; taking photographs and reporting on what he observed among the ordinary people.

In the late 1920s, Ransome brought his lover of 10 years back to England, divorced his wife and married Evgenia.

They settled together in a cottage on

an eastern hillside of the Lake District and, with Evgenia’s loving support in overcoming his deepening depression through the pre-World War II years, Ransome began his prolific 15-year writing career. The books, and his own hand-drawn illustrations, gave him a happy and satisfying middle-age ... and a huge income from the worldwide translations of his books.

The books are based partly on Arthur’s happy childhood on the lakes, where his father taught him to sail small dinghies. Here was planted the seed of the future adventure books. One feature of his books stands out: the language and manners of the children.

Interestingly, both families had lost their fathers in childhood and were brought up by single mothers and various “interfering aunts” yet they all grew up extremely responsible and well-behaved.

There is an ongoing attempt to turn some of the books into exciting children’s films; but WH&S would not allow children to go camping unsupervised.

And worse, the PC brigade could not put up with Laetitia (known through all the books as Titty) and demanded a

change in name. And the youngest boy is called Roger. Well, being “rogered” these days would just not pass the censors, so his name would have to be changed also.

Maybe Wayne would do!

The behaviour and language of the children had to change from natural chit-chat to the formal party-dress and correct manners. Pirate Captain Nancy had to be addressed by her despised birth name of Ruth and as a temporary young lady her innocent swearing (“jib-booms and bobshanks” and even “golly gosh”) had to give way to “goodness me and how are you Aunt Jane?”

Blue sailing trousers and red pirate caps had to be replaced with snow-white long dresses.

These books reflect an idyllic period in English society and culture; a time between the wars when life for children was carefree and joyous. This is a life that has been lost, and in the 21st century is denied to children everywhere. The Nanny State and helicopter parents have taken control.

Swallows and Amazons should be compulsory reading for today’s children – and their parents – before it’s too late.

Life before the wheelie bin Once upon a time, the world was a simpler place and we lived a virtually waste-free and more frugal existence, writes KATE CALLAHAN.

F

ood scraps were fed to the chooks or the dogs, or if you lived on a farm, the pigs.

Stale bread was turned into bread and butter pudding or dried in the oven and broken up with a rolling pin to make breadcrumbs for cooking.

Holey socks and jumpers were given a new lease on life with the deft touch of a darning needle. (A gold star for readers who know what a darning mushroom is!)

Torn clothing was patched and grandad’s worn out trousers were cut down into shorts for the grandchildren.

What was broken was fixed and if repair was impossible, things were reused in all manner of inventive ways.

Next to nothing was discarded because a use could be found for almost anything. “Repurposing” it’s called today.

I will never forget the creative brilliance of my mother in converting her fur coat into a fancy-dress costume for my brother. Mum and I loved that old coat, which had hung idly in her cupboard for 20 years or more.

Like her crepe sunray pleated frocks with lace inserts in the bodice, it was a relic of her carefree single days when she dressed up, went to dances and balls, and stayed out late.

There wasn’t much call for a fur coat on a dairy farm in 1968 and so, with the annual school fancy-dress ball approaching, Mum took up her scissors and upholstery needles and made the best little grenadier guard hat outside of Buckingham Palace for my brother.

She sculpted the frame of the hat from chicken wire, covered it with pieces of black fur coat, and lined it with the thick brown satin from inside the coat.

Making the red jacket with brass buttons and black trousers was the easy bit.

My brother’s grenadier guard outfit was an inspired example of “repurposing” and Mum’s hard work and ingenuity were acknowledged when my brother won the prize for best dressed boy.

Foodstuffs in those days came in paper or glass. Every second day, two loaves of high top white bread, wrapped in white butcher’s paper and tied up with string, appeared in our mail box at the top of the driveway.

The butcher’s paper was used to light the combustion stove, which in turn heated the water, and the string was stored and reused for all manner of things, like tying up parcels or attaching tomato plants to a trellis. From years of use, the lid on Mum’s pudding steamer

had given up the ghost and so string was used to tie on a butter wrapper as a makeshift lid.

Groceries were packed into thick brown paper bags or cardboard boxes.

There was no better fun than walking up the steepest hill on the farm with a good strong cardboard box, jumping in and sailing down the hill at breakneck speed.

Cordial, an annual treat at Christmas time, came in a glass flagon, which was returned to the factory once empty.

Less appetising, however, was the free school milk that was supplied in small bottles containing a third of a pint.

The taste of the milk at “little lunch” on a

hot Queensland Day remains a vivid and unpleasant memory of my schooldays.

Then along came plastic, which, on any measure, is an extraordinary material. It can be turned into pretty well any shape you want and made in pretty well any colour you choose. It’s also very, very durable.

I didn’t realise it back in the ’60s but our phone, wireless and light switches were all made of an early form of plastic, Bakelite, which is now regarded as highly collectible.

It’s a bit ironic really that something that contains formaldehyde and asbestos would be sought after, but different

TIME WARP strokes for different folks, I suppose.

No, my first recollection of plastic is Tupperware, named after one Earl Tupper who had made polypropylene items for the US military and went into consumer products after World War II. These new plastics were very desirable and were sold through a party plan, with rewards for hosts.

When a friend encouraged (nay, pressured) me into attending my first Tupperware party in the early 1970s, I bought under sufferance a green lettuce keeper, which still has its place in my oversized “Tupperware drawer”.

These clever plastics in pale pink, blue and green hues were nothing short of investment pieces. They were expensive and a tad trendy, and once the technique of sealing that last corner of the lid was mastered, there was satisfaction in knowing that the air was locked out and the flavour in.

As time has gone on, however, plastics have expanded into single-use items like drink bottles, plastic wrap and shopping bags.

This is where we’ve got into strife and there’s no point mincing words, folks, Australians have become very wasteful.

Plastic is now so ubiquitous that we don’t even really notice it. It’s also cheap, so we can afford to be lazy.

According to the National Waste Data Report, we individually generate, on

average, more than two tonnes of waste a year, much of which is plastic. That’s roughly equivalent to 250 large garbage bags of rubbish a person.

No wonder we have to wheel out our rubbish.

The old metal bins that once a week were picked up by burly garbage collectors who threw them on their shoulders and then tipped the contents into the back of their truck just don’t stand a chance.

REMEMBER WHEN In the days before wheelie bins, we managed to cope well enough with a small metal bin because: • Food scraps were fed to the chooks or put in the compost bin.

• Newspapers, old envelopes, bags and other paper items were used in the garden or burnt in the backyard incinerator.

• Glass jars were washed and put aside for leftovers or relishes and jams, if not yours then to give to the neighbour or the CWA. • Bottles were traded for the refund.

• Plastics were rare or non-existent.

This left only cans and the occasional plastic tub, so there was plenty of space for it in the little tin bin.

An animal rescue charity in Dayboro is facing an uncertain future after the Queensland Government banned visitors unless the not-for-profit group spent $300,000 adding an additional lane to Dayboro Road, which is managed by Queensland Transport and Main Roads.

Farm Animal Rescue (FAR), a registered charity sheltering animals rescued from abuse, neglect and cruelty, cares for more than 60 animals, including pigs, goats, cows, chickens and sheep.

The group is now seeking support from concerned community members by

signing the petition “Jackie Trad: Keep Farm Animal Rescue Open For Visitors” through the website Change.org “Our supporters donate to the charity to help animals, not so that we can improve the state’s highway infrastructure,” president Brad King said.

“We don’t have $300,000 to spend.”

“No other farmed animal charity in Australia, or as far as we can ascertain anywhere in the world, has been asked to spend charity money on upgrading a highway.”

Boots to bliss – Claude’s incredible journey On her 64th birthday, Claude Tranchant pulled on a pair of hiking boots and set off alone on a walk that would take her 2500km and 100 days but her incredible journey, writes DOT WHITTINGTON, was very much about learning she was much more courageous than she thought.

N

o, that’s not a zero too many. Claude Tranchant walked the equivalent distance of Townsville to Melbourne, or an average of 25km a day every day for more than three months.

A true pilgrim, she did it with a 14kg pack on her back and with little training or even any real grasp of the enormity of her undertaking until she was there, walking the St James Way, from northern France over the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain.

“I didn’t know what real walking was,” she says. “I didn’t understand the distance but on Day 1, I realised I was not trained.”

A palliative care volunteer for more than a decade, and a cancer support volunteer for more than 12 years, Claude had left her native France for Queensland in 1979, with her husband and the first of her two

children. At 58, she emerged fearful and uncertain from a broken marriage and took a job as a “checkout chick” in a fruit shop to help pay the bills.

“A customer knew I was French speaking and said she would like to walk some of the pilgrim’s trail in France, about 240km, and asked if I would like to join her,” Claude says. “As it turned out, she couldn’t go but she had planted the seed and the idea kept growing in my mind.”

It kept growing as the trail of the 9th century pilgrims to the shrine of St James was calling her and was to become much more than just a walk but a journey of discovering her own willpower and resolve – and overcoming fears.

In early 2010, Claude set off back to France. She had a guidebook but no GPS and no pedometer, and described herself as slightly overweight woman in her 60s who had

never walked much more than a stroll around town.

“In my mind I was 16, not 64.

I had lived with my parents, then my husband and I had never really done anything by myself so now I was back in my youth doing these things alone,” she says. “I had started to prepare for the walk but I had no comprehension of the challenges I was going to face. I thought it was to put one foot in front of the other and then to keep going. When you have never trekked you don’t understand.”

Leaving Vezelay in the Burgundy region, Claude walked 21km on the first day.

Mud, slush and constant hills to climb made it seem much further: “At the beginning, the path was always climbing. It may be only as high as Mt Coot-tha but when you have already walked a long way, it seemed so high.”

And so it went on, day after

OUR PEOPLE day as she made her way southwest on one of the less-travelled paths of the Camino de Santiago but one which nevertheless had been taken by thousands of pilgrims over centuries.

There are four routes to the shrine Three converge around the base of the Pyrenees and a fourth in Spain as they follow a single route to the Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.

While there were many others travelling the Spanish path, for the first eight weeks through France, it was a lonely trail through forests, wilderness, countryside and deserted villages but she came to enjoy being at one with nature and even being alone.

At one stage, she walked for more than 15 days without seeing another soul on the path.

Claude had to overcome her great fear of dogs, heights and of getting lost, but she conquered them all.

“In France I didn’t meet a soul on the trail for days at a time. I was lost all the time.

Sometimes there was not one trail but an intersection with three choices in front of you,

and no one to ask. It was total fear,” she says.

“Every single day I had to make choices. I got used to becoming lost. I had to control myself and overcome my fears and I learned to trust myself. I realised that this is just like life.

You come to points in your life where you have to make difficult decisions on your own.

I realised I was facing everything that in my life is challenging.”

She also met others along the way and was thrilled that the white-haired lady was to become known on the trail as “Claude the Australian”.

Claude says there were many days when it would have been easy to quit. She was in pain and permanently exhausted. Her feet were bruised, her toenails had fallen off and her shoulders ached from the weight of the backpack.

When her boots became so thin she could feel the rocks under her soles, she preferred the pain to the blisters that new shoes would bring. But with it all came the satisfaction of great achievement.

“At the end of the day, the number of kilometres had no meaning for me. It is a long way,” she says. “It is more significant to me that I walked for 100 days than that I walked 2500km.”

As her epic journey was coming to an end, her feelings became conflicted. After three months, she crossed her last mountain and felt only turmoil that soon she would have to return to the real world. It would soon be over.

She decided to continue, and walked on past Santiago de Compostela, to Fisterra known as “the end of the world” to finish at Muxia on the coast, about another 120km.

“It’s a calling,” she says.

“Whatever reason it might be that takes you there, you will discover it as you walk.

“For me, I had no idea when I set out. In my head I was 16 and it was one step at a time. I learnt a lot. I didn’t know how strong I was. I discovered me, I discovered I was resilient.”

She found herself grieving when she came home and then a friend suggested she should write her story. Once again it was the challenge of the

unknown. English was her second language and she knew as much about writing a book as she had about walking. After three months, she started writing.

“I wrote the same way as I did the walk, with ups and downs, reliving it as I wrote,” she says.

Boots to Bliss, was launched in December 2012, 33 years to the days since she had first landed in Brisbane. It has since become the one of the bestselling self-published books in Australia.

For her 70th birthday last year, Claude went to the Northern Territory and walked the Larapinta Trail, 215km in 14 days. This year she plans to go walking in Nepal and for her 75th birthday in 2021, she hopes to return to the Pilgrim’s Way. She still volunteers as a support worker for cancer and and palliative care patients but her walk has also opened up a whole new world. She met the French President at the Sydney Opera House and makes guest appearances all over Australia.

“I am happy to do talks and help women overcome their

fears and embrace life. Age is irrelevant,” she says. “If I had said, ‘you can’t do that Claude’ I would never have overcome my fears.”

A woman with a dream – and vision to make it happen “I have a dream” is the famous quotation of Martin Luther King and Martha Lilian Young also had a dream, writes DIANA HACKER.

S

he was born Martha Lilian Chandler in Warwick on January 24, 1900, one of seven children in a pioneer family. Her paternal grandparents had arrived in Queensland in 1857 and settled on land first owned by Patrick Leslie in Warwick.

Martha developed a deep interest in the history of Queensland but her nature was a perfect dichotomy for she still thought of England as home.

She could best be described as having a charming personality, of strong character, forthright, forceful and influential with a knack for knowing the right people in the right place while valuing and enjoying their friendship and assistance.

She dressed sensibly and conservatively and never changed her way of dressing her hair. On December 7, 1926 Martha married Charles Henry Young. The couple had only son and they made their home at Como, Ormiston in 1937.

Como was history itself, originally being 12 acres established by Francis Bigge in 1853. In 1910 the original house was burnt down and a new house built within the beautiful garden. Here Martha established a rustic tearoom which was open to the public and became a popular spot for locals and visiting dignitaries.

During World War II the tearooms were closed and Martha’s exceptional organisational abilities came to the fore when she became officer in charge of the Comforts Funds Hospitality Bureau for the Royal Navy.

Once peace was declared, she reopened her tearooms but society had changed and she closed in 1952. She found another outlet for her exceptional skills and influence by joining the Women’s Historical Association.

In 1954, she became president of the association which had now added Queensland to its title. She

Martha was determined to record women’s history and in this endeavor, she was well ahead of her time. Posterity must be truly grateful.

Before the Great War the achievements of women were largely recorded in letters and diaries and were seldom valued in the same way as those of fathers, husbands or brothers.

Careers for women were strictly limited and were viewed as an occupation to fill in time before marriage or as a way of a spinster woman maintaining herself.

In 1959, Centenary year, Martha was a member of the Historical Committee of the Centenary Council, and the Women’s Centenary Committee and was in demand as a speaker.

In the New Year’s Honours List of 1960 she was awarded an OBE, Civil List as president of the QWHA. Within the organisation she was president, recorder and convener of the Plaques Sub-Committee.

This sub-committee researched the history of people and places of outstanding importance in southeast Queensland and overseas; sought permissions and raised funds to install 87 plaques.

In 1964, during an overseas holiday, Martha and secretary Gwyneth Campbell affixed six plaques on historic sites in England, Scotland and France.

Martha’s dream of a memorial to the pioneer women of Queensland became almost an obsession and the association was beginning to amass a wealth of memorabilia.

In December 1966, she inspected a property in Bowen Hills and was of the opinion that it was most suitable. By February 1967, a deposit had been paid and a loan organised.

On the afternoon of March 18, 1967 Martha signed the documents which passed ownership of Miegunyah, the Victorian Queenslander, in Jordan Tce, Bowen Hills into the trusteeship of the Queensland Women’s Historical Association.

A new era of endeavour was about to begin; however it would be achieved without Martha for within sight of her dream, she suffered a fatal heart attack that same evening.

Rules for roses in a humid climate

HEAD OFF ON A SPRING ADVENTURE

A rose by any other name would still be hard work – especially, writes GARDENEZI, in southeast Queensland.

D

espite the challenges, for many people no garden, or patio, is complete without at least one of these most loved of flowering plants.

There’s no great mystique to successful rose-growing but you do need to follow basic rules: 1. The sheer number of varieties on sale today is bewildering, so buy from a good garden centre and get advice on choosing only from those that do well in this climate.

2. Plant it in a sunny, open spot which drains well.

3. Prepare the soil in advance.

You can’t just stick a highlybred plant like a rose in the ground and expect it to flourish. The soil must be dark in colour, crumbly, easy to dig, full of worms.

4. Feed every six weeks throughout the summer with blood and bone and added potash or a commercial brand rose food.

5. Water well at least twice a week or more in very hot

What winter? Put a jacket on it There’s a nip in the air and even though Queenslanders enjoy a mild winter, there are times when we need something a bit warmer, writes KAY McMAHON.

Q

ueenslanders have become experts at layering for the rare cooler days and nights. The irony is that if you read the current fashion magazines and shop the trend-driven stores, the rest of the country is only just catching on.

Everywhere you look lately fashion experts are singing the praises of coats and jackets supplementing summer garments for Australian winters, rather than heavy woollen ensembles.

“Say it with a Jacket” headlines many fashion columns and “a versatile piece that can mix and match” heralds others.

All are obvious suggestions for those of us who live in warmer climes. The dilemma is that the jackets that are being peddled, while embroidered, beaded and sequinned – yes, for daywear as well – outstrip my budget.

But I’ve had an epiphany while my husband has been directing me to clean up boxes of retro and vintage garments that I

can’t bear to gift or sell.

I already have many similar jackets in my collection that haven’t seen the light of day since I went through my contemporary minimalist and recognition-of-aging phase.

I found the black buglebeaded ’50s jacket, hand-made silk shoulder pads intact, that was given to me when I was involved in a second-hand clothing store Arsenic and Old Lace in the late ’70s. And yes, a great name for a retro store.

Then I rummaged through and found the Chinese embroidered vintage woollen jacket that I had picked up in a

New York flea market in the 1980s for only $40.

This jacket has served me well over the years and while woollen, is light enough to throw over any outfit, day or night, to keep westerly winds at bay.

Another find was a fullysequinned Easton Pearson jacket.

It made me nostalgic for the fashion parades and events, both here and overseas, where other guests looking more “fashionista” would ask the label’s name. But yes, I think I might wear it during the day and even try it over jeans for lunch with the girls.

And while we’re on Easton Pearson (one of the biggest wardrobe dramas in my life

when they ceased operating), their burnt orange, brocade, three-quarter jacket bought several years ago, has been the staple of my wardrobe at many overseas fashion conferences.

Many times, I became best friends with the Indian educational contingent because the jacket was an opening conversation piece. They appreciated the quality of the fabric, the colour among the tonal European contingent, the contemporary design, the wearability, and the fact that it was daylight in Paris.

And finally, my favourite jacket for both winter and summer in Queensland – a vintage Japanese kimono. I have become addicted to an online Japanese kimono store www. inchiroya.com that is trying to save the plethora of vintage kimonos being lost to more modern varieties.

The store has items for all budgets, from 100 per cent silk to 100 per cent cotton, many embroidered but most in

beautiful retro prints. While I have to hand-sew large hems to wear them over jeans and dresses, it is worth getting out the needle and thread. And best thing – kimonos fit all body shapes, so sizing is not an issue.

So, what’s my point? I’m sure many of us have plenty of impressive, stylish and now vintage jackets hidden away that can come out for a few outings this winter. You won’t be wearing the current offering, but will stand out in the crowd with jackets that make a statement while not competing with younger generations.

You may not have the same ripped-jean silhouette as your granddaughters, but they’re the ones who’ll be asking to have a loan of your most-treasured archived jackets.

Bring it on winter. My jackets are now aired and ready for lunch with the girls. Are you reading this husband dearest?

or many people, the lure of the “Beautiful one day, Perfect the next” climate sends people packing north to fabulous Queensland. This was not the case for residents David and Jane Ross though.

They instead headed South to where the weather was a little cooler.

David came from one of the original families in Darwin. His Dad went up there before World War 2 with a truck and a shovel. He went on to build a big trucking company which David eventually managed. Jane lived in Darwin from the age of 9 and it was while she was home on holidays from boarding school, that she met David at a local dance, Jane was a beautiful 15 year old and David a strapping young lad of 18 years. The pair went on to marry five years later and raised three

sons on acreage outside of Darwin with lots of pets and horses.

Their family holidays were often spent on the Sunshine Coast and they dreamt of moving south and buying a farm. This dream wasn’t achieved until 2003, when the boys were all grown up. They purchased a 50 acre property at Belli Park and bred Brahmans and Australian stock horses. After five years, they sold the farm and bought a couple of acres on the Eumundi Range.

David and Jane started thinking about the value of living in a community with people of similar ages and interests. Upon hearing of Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa, they decided to come down to the Resort and have a look around. With the Cooroy-Noosa Resort in the early stages of construction David and Jane

What is the difference between junk mail in the letterbox and junk mail on a computer?

Internet connection or wireless network issues regularly come up for NATHAN WELLINGTON to solve, so here’s the first in his series on how home networks work.

o you remember when you enjoyed opening your inbox and seeing the many emails from friends and relatives? In 1998, they even made a movie about it, You’ve Got Mail, with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Today the inbox is often overloaded with bills or marketing from businesses you may have used, along with unwanted emails advising you have won a gift voucher or the Nigerian lottery!

So, what can you do to minimise junk emails and what constitutes junk email?

Junk mail in the letterbox is totally unsolicited, it is not addressed so you easily identify it as junk. But when that brand sends you an email it is usually because you signed up to a newsletter or a loyalty program like Flybuys.

While you associate that brand with junk mail, it is in fact not junk email.

Why does this matter? Junk or spam email at one point represented 80 per cent of all emails sent. The trouble is we keep giving the filters mixed messages.

Most email programs have a junk or spam button and too often we flag a genuine Coles email, received because you have a Flybuys card, as junk. What you should do is unsubscribe from the email. If only it were that simple!

What about the emails that say they are from Coles but are not? How can you tell the difference? If you tap the sender’s name the email address of the sender will be revealed and if it does not contain the brand’s website address, it is spam.

This is not an email you want to unsubscribe from as that will only confirm you are a real person and you can look forward to much more spam if you “unsubscribe” from an email you never subscribed to in the first place.

Here’s my tips: 1. Only unsubscribe from emails you legitimately subscribed to.

2. If the sender’s email address does not match the business website flag it as junk/spam.

3. If you are unsure do not unsubscribe, but delete the email and move on.

ome networking has three terms, and you may find them on a modem/router: • LAN is Local Area Network and is when you use a particular Ethernet cable to connect computers and printers to talk to one another and to the internet.

• WLAN is Wireless Local Area Network and is the wireless signal from your modem/router that connects your wireless devices to each other and the internet.

• WAN is Wide Area Network and is usually a port on your modem/router that can be used to connect to another network. Some people use this to connect their router to a separate modem.

The WLAN or Wi-Fi as it is referred to, uses radio waves to connect your devices. It has a lot of challenges to over-come in getting information from point A to point B, such as how the data travels through the air, the data has to avoid colliding with one another, it needs to get to the right device and back, and then forms to make an image or sound.

When streaming video, time slicing and data rates also determine the success or failure of the wireless connection.

With the introduction of the NBN, many people are being provided with

new modem/routers during the upgrade, but traditionally the modem/router was separate. The router connects all your devices together, like a bike wheel. The router is the hub and your devices are at the end of the spokes. The modem is the bridge between your internet service and the router, so that all your devices can access the internet.

The wireless signal on most modern modem/routers use 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. The 2.4GHz band is quite crowded, because it’s also used by old cordless phones, garage door openers, health monitors, and other devices.

The longer waves used by the 2.4GHz band are better suited to longer ranges and transmission through walls and solid objects, but because so many other devices use this frequency, the resulting congestion can cause dropped connections and slower-than-expected speeds.

The 5GHz band is less congested, which means you will likely get more stable connections at higher speeds, but it is less able to penetrate walls.

Well-behaved Swift presents personality at a practical price The world loves the pert little Suzuki Swift, writes BRUCE McMAHON, as more than five million have been sold around the world since 2005.

T

hat was the year the compact Japanese car took on a unique and charming body style with snub nose, truncated rear and deep windows.

It was a character recognised from The Gap to the Ginza.

That Swift morphed into the updated model of 2011, different in part yet with similar profile. The cheeky style remained, as did the Suzuki’s inherently decent road manners and appeal as a comfortable commuter.

So now comes the third iteration of this successful, well-loved little car.

For 2017 there are two engine choices, three transmissions to consider and four trim variants with list prices now running from $16,990 to $22,990.

(Consider this: the first of this family of Swifts started out at $15,990 in 2005, car prices have been pretty stable for a bit now and that’s with the inclusion of new gear and updated dynamics for most.)

And while there’s more substance yet again for this new generation Suzuki the style remains familiar, from the deep, wrap-around windscreen through to near vertical tailgate.

Perhaps the grille and headlights have become a touch generic, but there is more

muscle to the Swift’s haunches.

The all-new body today sits on a new and smarter chassis with longer wheelbase and wider track (the distance between the wheels).

So this five-door bodied Swift is shorter, wider, lower and more aerodynamic than before.

Increases in body dimensions bring more shoulder room, front and rear. Seat heights have been lowered to help compensate for the lower roofline, but the back seat is still best left to just two adults – or a pair of kids’ safety seats.

The boot is bigger too, albeit sitting over a temporary spare tyre which probably isn’t a huge issue in a car less likely to be heading overland to Darwin anytime soon.

According to Suzuki’s calculations, thirsty folk could now accommodate five cartons of beer back here, two more than in the outgoing model.

And that’s the story with the Suzuki Swift of 2017 – a bit more of everything from cabin accommodation and fitments to driving dynamics.

Standard gear now includes Bluetooth

connectivity, hill-hold assist on auto models and daytime running lights. The top two models – GL+ and GLX – offer lane departure warning, weaving alert and a quite intuitive adaptive cruise control which uses radar to maintain distance between Swift and cars ahead.

This new chassis handles better than the old, the steering is more precise, there’s less body roll and front end grip is much better.

For most Suzuki drivers the base 1.3 litre engine and its 66kW will be adequate, if best mated to the five-speed manual gearbox rather than the Constantly Variable Transmission.

The turbocharged 1 litre engine for the top-line GLX offers a keener 82kW and arrives with a six-speed automatic – this one would be more fun with that manual transmission.

At the end of the drive the latest Suzuki Swift will get the commuter home in safety and comfort. It is a wellbehaved, well-built small car with some individuality and all at a reasonable price.

Yet some will be hoping there’s a Swift Sport model in the wings, a touch more purposeful to better showcase the depth of this new car’s abilities.

REVIEW PICKS UP DISINTEREST

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be super silly Sometimes you just have to take control because if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good chance youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be sucked in, chewed up and spat out, writes ALLISON BROWN, who learnt a salutary lesson the hard way and is probably not alone.

I

â&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always dealt in words not numbers, talked people and events not superannuation and accounting.

When I was married, I was quite happy to hand over the business affairs to my spouse. He was happy to do it, I was happy not to and so I bumbled along, eyes glazing over and smiling politely when anyone wanted to talk about investments and returns.

When I became single, I was referred to a financial planner so I let him take over, happily signing away care of my meagre superannuation, trusting and confident that he had my measure.

The financial planner was of a similar age and seemed to understand that this was no time for me to take risks but to consolidate and build slowly and wisely.

He said I could ring him any time and I did, about once a year around tax time.

And so more than two years rolled on and if anyone enquired about my super, I smiled happily and said it was fine as I had a financial planner looking after it for me.

At tax time last year, I asked him why I was paying so much in insurances and he reassured me this was the right thing at my age.

Typically â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and stupidly â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I believed him, baffled by the jargon of it all and not really understanding a word he said, but quietly confident he knew what was best for me.

Then my bubble burst.

Chatting after dinner with friends, the subject turned to super and retirement and planning for old age.

My friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s husband was telling me how he was shuffling their super to take advantage of current markets blah blah

Peace of mind at a great price

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was hopelessly out of control and had no idea what was happeningâ&#x20AC;? blah and then asked me how I was going.

I suddenly realised I was hopelessly out of control and had no idea what had been happening to the 18 per cent of my salary I was sacrificing every week.

I contacted the financial adviserâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office the next day and asked to see recent statements.

The contents were terrifying. I was paying $250 a month, yes a month, for life insurance.

Why do I need life insurance? I have no idea. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have little kids or a big debt. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enough for my adult children to inherit.

Then it got worse. I was paying more than $500 a month, yes a month, for my income protection insurance.

I recalled I had been worried, being on my own, that I would need backup if I got sick, but I had never bothered to find out the premium because the nice man had explained it would come out of my super fund and I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel it.

I did some sums and realised if I had been banking these premiums, I would now be months ahead and would be able to pay myself no strings attached.

I also spotted that I was paying the nice financial adviser a retainer that was worth my than my full cover health insurance with extras for one phone call a year.

What a fool I had been!

Yes, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all my own stupid fault. Yes, I cancelled everything immediately and signed all the forms to transfer my super back to my employers.

The balance of my super, despite pouring every spare dollar into it, had grown by only $2000 in the two years the financial adviser had been looking after my nest egg.

I had wasted thousands.

I am not blaming the financial adviser.

He was doing a job and I was letting him do a job on me.

The moral of this story is that even if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand some of these things, make your own enquiries, make an effort to learn more about it and take control.

If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t, somebody else will.

ASIC has released a report about key aspects of consumer engagement with their superannuation funds, focusing on the experience of less-engaged members.

The review sets out key principles that can help improve member experience of superannuation.

It also points to some areas for improvement, including provision of insurance through superannuation funds and disclosure practices.

It mapped three stages of the superannuation lifecycle: Joining a fund, participating in a fund and changing or leaving a fund, and looked at potential risks or problem areas for consumers, assessing how these were being managed by funds.

This included examining where changes occur to a memberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s arrangements without consent, such as variations to insurance policies.

Some of ASICâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s concerns related to poor disclosure where membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; insurance cover has ceased or changed without adequate forewarning by the superannuation trustee.

ASIC also found that some trustees may be using inappropriate defaults in dealing with their members.

In some cases, where trustees have moved members within a fund, trustees are treating members as â&#x20AC;&#x153;smokersâ&#x20AC;? for the purposes of calculating their insurance premiums without knowing whether the member smokes or not.

This can result in a higher premium for the member, which would be inappropriate given the low and decreasing levels of smoking among members of the public. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Inappropriate defaults can be adverse to consumers, as they are unlikely to notice the change in status that has been applied to their account,â&#x20AC;? ASIC deputy chairman Peter Kell said.

Exercise is preventative medicine and fear of falling should not discourage physical fitness, because, writes KENDALL MORTON, loss of strength, balance and flexibility only increases the risk.

The refreshing cool nights and warm days of a Queensland winter lose their charm when colds and flu start spreading, but, writes TRUDI KITHER, there are specific herbs to help boost our immune system and increase energy levels.

ach year, more than one-third of adults aged 65 and older have a serious fall. This is no accident.

Joints and muscles change as we age and some movements become more difficult.

Many household obstacles can become a hazard. The ability to readjust balance and centre of gravity slows down which often leads people to change their gait. They walk with a wider or a narrower stance or shuffle.

These changes can cause falls and the remedy is exercise.

The National Institute on Aging in the US says loss of muscle strength, bone density, flexibility and balance isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t inevitable. When these losses occur, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s generally because the individual is not exercising.

Exercising for 30 minutes three times a week, can take 10 years off the age of your heart. It is also good for the brain as it improves blood circulation and reduces inflammation.

Recent research reveals that exercise positively impacts the hippocampus region, which is important for balance and memory functions.

It also found that seniors who exercise

regularly have less brain-tissue atrophy than those who live a sedentary lifestyle.

Despite the evidence, it can be hard for older family members to overcome the fear of falling and become more active. Safe exercise is the key. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not necessary to go to a gym.

Strength training to build muscles and bones can be done at home by lifting free weights, using stretch bands or pushing against your own body weight. Many daily activities such as gardening, washing, shopping and sweeping involve some strength building.

Speak to a doctor first, so you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t overdo it. Wear sturdy shoes and start slowly. To stay motivated, consider exercising with a buddy.

You can build exercise into your day by pairing it with something you already do. For example, each time you put on the kettle, do some stretches at the bench.

Manage the sting of diabetes

Diabetes is an incurable disease that affects 1.7 million Australians but, writes TIM FRENCH, it doesn’t have to be a death sentence for the one person diagnosed every five minutes.

D

iabetes is one of Australia’s biggest health epidemics, the fastest growing chronic disease that costs the nation an estimated $14.6 billion and rising.

It is our responsibility as health professionals to put a stop to it and the good news is, the disease is both preventable and manageable through lifestyle factors, healthy diet and exercise.

It affects the pancreas, a vital organ that produces insulin and converts glucose into energy, reducing it from bloodstream. Like all things in the human body, without proper function, things can go pear shaped and in the case of a malfunctioning pancreas, the effects are serious.

There are two types of diabetes. In type 1, the pancreas has gone completely kaput and the body has become insulin dependent requiring injections or an insulin pump to control glucose levels.

In type 2, the pancreas is screaming out for help, trying its very hardest to convert glucose into energy but it’s struggling and as a result, the body is building an insulin resistance, leaving too much glucose in the blood.

Potential complications for both types

of diabetes are the same and can result in heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, limb amputation, blindness as well as mental illness.

On a more positive note, the disease can be controlled and in some cases its effects reverted through healthy diet and managed exercise.

Adding to exercise’s impressive resumes is its ability to make the body more sensitive to insulin, lowering blood glucose without insulin for hours after exercise.

Exercise Physiologist, Liz Coolee from Northside Allied Health, has been working closely with Jeffery Moore, who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2007, and has had some significant health improvements.

“The positive impacts exercise has had on Jeffery’s condition are testament to

the powers of diet and exercise,” she says.

Jeffery had tried to exercise previously but not under the care of an exercise physiologist who really understands how to manage the disease.

“Since starting at the clinic 18 months ago, Jeffery has lost weight, reduced his waist band, improved his sense of worth and outlook on life” Liz said.

Jeffery said he now recorded and analysed his blood glucose levels daily but previously had not understood the purpose.

“My clothes are getting looser and I’ve have to put my belt in the next hole,” he said.

Jeffery has also been seeing a Northside Allied Health accredited dietician as part of his management plan, providing him with a diet plan and better education about healthy food choices while monitoring his progress.

Putting names to faces – and addresses We can live in a street for years without knowing our neighbours’ names, but then, one day along comes an opportunity to speak to them.

CAROLYN COOMBES takes up the challenge.

I

was walking up the hill from the bus stop, concentrating on my breathing.

When walking up hills, my breathing demands attention. Not good to be ageing.

Returning from my monthly meeting of the Queensland Women Writer’s group at the library, thoughts esoteric competed with breathing.

Suddenly an anxious face invaded my personal space. Huh? The elderly Italian woman from two doors down, across the road, behind the leopard tree.

I knew her by sight only.

“Have you seen white little dog?” she asked.

“No, there was no dog from the bus stop to here,” I replied.

“I dunno where he is. I opened the door, and he gone.” Her tears were escaping too.

Focus brain. She was too frail to gallivant through the neighbourhood looking for her dog.

“I will put these bags away and look for your dog. What’s his name?”

“I dunno, I call him Puppy. He my son’s dog. He small, white.”

When I greeted my husband and dumped my stuff, I spoke of my intended walk to find a small white dog, called Puppy. He suggested I drive. Good idea.

I rolled the window down as I passed

the woman, to let her know I was now searching.

“I ring my son. Puppy name Ollie.”

“Thanks.” A nervous smile flitted across her face.

“He go up street neighbour say.”

“That’s helpful, I will go that way too.”

Cruising the streets I tried to think like Ollie. Could he find his way to the park? No, he wasn’t there.

Would he cross roads? Would he follow people? Perhaps yes, and I’d find him shopping.

Sure enough, he was opposite the shops, seemingly trying to eat gum leaves from a fallen branch. Starving so soon?

Perhaps he too had used emotional energy.

Would he run? I stopped, carefully crossing the road, crooning, “Hello Ollie, what a lovely puppy” in case he answered to Puppy instead.

Ollie was so interested in eating, he expressed no surprise or distrust, at being bundled into a small white car, matching his appearance.

I did wonder if I could be kidnapping another random dog, but I knew that my neighbour would be a witness for the

defence if I needed to front court.

As we arrived back safely, I was thankful I’d driven.

I couldn’t have carried him the distance, not with my lungs.

The neighbour’s face transformed to cavernous joy, revealing few teeth.

“Put him down. My son, he say, ‘I give him to you for one day and you lose him’.”

“I will put him down inside the door, so we don’t lose him again.”

Suddenly we were inside her home behind the shut door, but she didn’t want me there.

I was hustled outside, taking care Ollie didn’t do another Houdini act.

I still do not know her name, although I have lived in the street for 12 years, but I now know Ollie’s.

That is enough for a future conversation and possible connection.

What an unexpected opportunity to get to know each other.

TAKE A TOUR OF ANCIENT ROME IN an Australian exclusive, Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum has opened at Queensland Museum as part of an international touring exhibition.

It is a rare and unique opportunity to have an exclusive exhibition on the doorstep.

Fiction cannot be as compelling as the real thing and so it is with this story set in Poland during World War II. Jan and Antonia Zabinski are deeply committed to their zoo, particularly Antonia who has an abiding affinity and dedication to all animals. Bombs rain down on the zoo and there is chaos, with many of the larger animals stampeding out through broken gates and dying. After a drunken party by the Nazis, butchers went hunting and killed some more. It’s heartbreaking reading but this is about the glorious people, the Polish underground.

Desperate people are hidden among the small animals, secret codes, dyed blonde hair to appear Aryan … there are all sorts of tricks. This is a story of tenacity and survival and everyone should read it.

I really enjoyed this book. Many of my favourite themes were explored: World War II Polish history, the despicable horrors of Nazi Germany, the heroism of the suppressed Polish people with man’s good nature and determination triumphing over evil.

The heroine loved and understood animal behaviour with her senses so finely tuned into their thoughts and feelings she could almost be one of them. She understood how a hunted human animal and zoo animal felt.

The moral of the book is that animals are people too and our friends. “If any creature is in danger, human or animal, you save it”. I loved the author’s narrative and descriptive writing style. She has a beautiful turn of phrase. It is a bit long-winded in the middle section but overall a great read.

BOOK review JOHN KLEINSCHMIDT Polish names are at best difficult and I found that a distraction. The story is well researched, but in my opinion provides an unbalanced mix of detail about Antonina’s family, the Jewish people they save, zoo animals and the Nazis who occupied Poland during the war.

The Zabinskis’ love of animals and warm friendships with people who pass through the zoo provides a human element to the story, but nonetheless the story is centred on the cruelty of the Nazis and their Warsaw Holocaust. For me, the book could have had more detail about the dramatic life of Antonina’s husband Jan and the clever strategies used to save Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto.

Polish zookeepers Jan and Antonina Zabinski manage to save more than 300 people from Warsaw Ghetto by hiding refugees in the empty animal cages after their zoo is bombed.

They are forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck, but fight back on their own terms, covertly working with the Resistance.

Antonina puts herself and even her children at great risk. This true story is the result of extensive research by a great storyteller.

September 1939, Warsaw is being bombarded and taken over by the Germans. Jews are relegated to the Ghetto and Antonina and Jan Zabinski run a zoo ahead of its time. The zoo is all but destroyed and then put under the administration of Lutz Heck, a zoologist they knew before the war. Lutz had friends in high places – Goring and Goebbels – and was obsessed with bloodlines in animals and wanted to bring back German animals now extinct so used their zoo. This is a moving true story that again proves the truth is stranger than fiction. Recommended reading!

MARY BARBER This portrait of Antonina Zabinski is deeply moving. The author has used diaries, letters, interviews and historical documents to recreate life at the Warsaw Zoo during the Nazi regime.

The book is lively and full of anecdotes, some amusing, some painful. The antics of the zoo animals provided a welcome distraction for people living in hiding, not knowing if or when they will be free again.

Ackerman brings this period of history to life very effectively. She describes the racist practices of the Nazi regime and shows the bravery and fortitude of the Polish people. Their selfless actions in hiding and protecting thousands of Jews saw many survive the war years.

This book is well worth the read, but don’t expect to be entertained.

This is an extremely moving story. Diane Ackerman meticulously researched the history of Jan and Antonina Zabinski to give the reader a confronting account of their enormous courage saving 300 Jews. The lengthy introduction, portraying the Zabinski’s idyllic life before the invasion of Poland, was necessary to help the reader absorb the contrast, as life changed for all with the Nazis occupation.

Jan and Antonina were not Jews and were very well respected in Warsaw society considering the unusual Zoo they had set up. How easily they could have chosen to ignore the plight of the Jews. Stories like these challenge me, the reader, to wonder what I would have done! Not easy to answer – even giving a drink of water to a Jew was punishable by death! Why did they do it? From an interview with their daughter Teresa, “they believed it was the right thing to do, that’s what a decent person would do.” For more insight into this remarkable story, there is an excellent YouTube video by the author which gives an insight to the research and meaning behind this story.

Definitely recommended.

Wild West still holds secrets of Wild Bill and Calamity Jane Students of the Wild West refuse to give up their search for an answer to the question that’s baffled experts for over a century so, writes DAVID ELLIS, just what was the real relationship between legendary Wild Bill Hickok and less than law-abiding Calamity Jane?

V

isitors to today’s Deadwood in the Black Hills of Dakota can still ponder that question as they not only walk the same boardwalk streets that Wild Bill and Calamity Jane trod 140-odd years ago, but also visit their side-by-side graves and wonder at the strange relationship between these complete opposites.

The one-time Marshall Hickok (between engagements he was also a hired-gun and professional gambler) is known to have considered Calamity little more than a drinking mate. So just why did the alcoholic hooker ask to be buried next to “her great love” as she was dying nearly 30 years after he was shot dead in a Deadwood bar room?

History tells us that, as in the movies, the Deadwood Stage did roll-out over the hills, lawbreakers were lynched in the streets of “the shootin’est town in the West,” and that Wild Bill and Calamity Jane did on occasion step Deadwood’s boardwalks together.

And, just as in the movies, 30,000 gold miners did flock to Deadwood in the 1870s-80s, just as today tourists can visit the tombstones in the town’s cemetery of those who met their death by natural cause, rope or bullet.

But unlike in the movies, Hickok wasn’t interested in upholding justice when he left his new bride in Wyoming and jumped the Deadwood Stage. He planned on relieving gullible miners of some of their Black Hills’ gold at the poker table.

And again, unlike in the movies, when he arrived in Deadwood in 1876, Hickok was mysteriously accompanied

by Calamity Jane Cannary whom he’d previously worked with in a Wild West Show, together with a colourful one-time Pony Express rider, ‘Colorado’ Charlie Utter.

Calamity soon turned out to be anything but Hollywood’s Doris Day who would host Wild Bill to candlelit dinners in a rose-gardened Deadwood cottage.

Deadwood had hit the headlines in August 1875 when gold was found in a nearby creek. Within days, thousands of hopefuls had flocked to the Black Hills, in the beginning scooping-up nuggets “as big as candy bars” and when these easy pickings petered out, blasted their way into the gold-bearing hillsides.

On a fateful August 2, 1876 Hickok – who drank with his left hand to keep his gun-hand free – dropped into the No.10 Saloon for a game of poker. The only seat at the table had its back to the door, so he opted out, fearful of ambush from behind.

Fellow gamblers talked him into staying, and he’d played just a few hands when drunken hoodlum Jack McCall stumbled through the bat-wing doors, and shot him dead with a single bullet to

the head.

His black aces and eights that spilled to the floor are known to this day as a “deadman’s hand.”

McCall was tried, but acquitted on his claim it was revenge for Hickok killing his brother. When it was discovered McCall’s outlaw brother was already dead, he was recaptured and hanged.

Calamity Jane meanwhile was doing what Hollywood didn’t tell us: she was working as a barmaid and part-time prostitute in local saloons, often taking her pay in whiskey before both lifestyles caught up with her.

Just before her death she asked that she be buried next to Wild Bill and posed, haggard and gaunt, with a bouquet, at the grave “of her great love”.

That was in 1903, 27 years after Wild Bill’s death and when she was 53. Today the bodies of Martha “Calamity Jane” Cannary and James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickcok lay side by side in Deadwood’s

This leaves historians mystified. The newly-married Hickock was immaculate in dress and grooming, and constantly wrote home to his new bride Agnes in Wyoming.

Conversely the “less than attractive” Calamity Jane dressed as a man, swore furiously, and on drunken sprees would shoot out the lights of saloons and gambling houses.

Deadwood today is a fascinating trek back into the Wild West, with a gambler’s El Dorado of restored boardwalk casinos, saloons and dining halls, an 1860s gold mine to explore, and museums recounting its wild past.

Lunar landscape an expected treasure If you are doing the Darling Run or just travelling past the Willandra Lakes region, grey nomad BEVERLEY EVERSON recommends stopping off at the remarkable Mungo National Park.

An ancient landscape that is constantly being changed by the wind and rain.

I

n case you haven’t heard of it, Mungo is just south of Pooncarie in NSW or about 88km northeast of Mildura.

It’s on a good sealed road parallel to the Darling River through a landscape of river gums, mulga scrub and red soil.

The last part, on Top Hut Rd, is 50km of dirt but usually suitable for all types of vehicles. The area is continually being moulded by wind and rain and is dominated by dry lake basins, white, red and brown sand dunes, mallee scrub, clay plains and sparsely forested cypress pines all within a lunar landscape.

One possible origin of the name Mungo is the Paakantji word for canoe which is “mungoe”. The vast spaces, big

skies and rich colours fill the senses and carry you back to an ancient time when tribes roamed, lived and played beside the lake’s edge and food, water and shelter were plentiful.

Human presence goes back 42,000 years. In the 1960s, the oldest remains of Mungo Lady and later, Mungo Man, were discovered. Geologist Jim Bowler found mussel shells, stone tools and other evidence of an ancient culture and on a later expedition, saw what looked like burnt bones. Archaeologists were called in and research is ongoing.

National Park formed in 1979. It is one of only four listed in Australia for both natural and cultural values.

The park is geared for many interests such as exploring by car (a 4WD is not required but rain may cause issues), mountain biking and walking.
