or many years, I thought cosmetic surgery was all about the nip and tuck, the secret elixir of youth designed only to lift the sags and defy gravity as the years inevitably took their toll.

Then my mother signed up for surgery as her eyelids were drooping to the point where she could barely see past them. There was nothing beautifying about the experience, it was all practicality.

When the pads came off, it was quite frightening as all of a sudden she was looking like a startled rabbit (and terrified the grandkids!). Gradually we become accustomed to the newlook and she, of course, was happy to have her clear vision back.

Being something of a chicken when it comes to surgery, a cosmetic procedure is not something I would readily sign up for just to restore a youthful appearance like the queens of Hollywood. However, as Lorraine Page writes, there are plenty of good reasons to give it a go, and not all of them are about simple vanity. It’s also very much about feeling good about yourself and confidence.

The big news for me is that I am at last to become a grandmother, and I’m hoping the next generation will turn up on what would have been my mother’s 100th birthday. Mum only made it to 85, but it would be a fine tribute to her birth in Clermont, central Queensland, in November 1918. I am already befuddled by the hype that now surrounds childbirth.

Oh, how things have changed over the past 33 years. There’s so much information that one wonders how previous generations managed to survive!

Positive ageing - is cosmetic surgery right for you?

As people become more conscious about wellbeing, they want to look younger and, as LORRAINE PAGE writes, anecdotal evidence suggests there’s a growing interest in cosmetic procedures across all ages.

geing gracefully� or “ageing like fine wine� are those annoying euphemisms we’ve all heard for looking older and making the best of the sag and bag of a once firm face and body.

Even if we’re looking older and embracing life, a mental disconnect can set in as lax faces portray emotions we don’t feel such as tiredness, sadness or even anger.

So it’s not surprising that according to a group of doctors with a special interest in cosmetic medicine, not all of us are meekly sucking up whatever nature arbitrarily dishes out, as we grow older.

closely by dermal fillers for the face, Australians don’t stint themselves.

Australia’s per capita spend on non-invasive cosmetic treatments is among the highest globally and due in part to Australia’s harsh climate.

It’s a trend that’s showing no sign of slowing down, with fat transfers the new kid on the block joining the rejuvenation mix of dermal fillers in what is a rapidly evolving industry.

Although the terms cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery are often used interchangeably, there is a difference.

Cosmetic surgery is elective, while plastic surgery is a surgical specialty dedicated to the reconstruction of facial and body defects. A plastic surgeon can

perform cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.

The road that leads to more invasive, aesthetic procedures can be a much longer and more private affair, often starting with injections to temporarily smooth over wrinkles, and dermal fillers to address fine lines and plump up once rounded cheeks and lips.

Stories that circulate like urban myths among our friends about cosmetic procedures that have left some poor soul with a face that swells in summer and shrinks in winter don’t inspire us to pay someone else to fix our ageing visages.

A year ago, Trish, (not her real name), an independent and feisty woman in her mid-60s who works globally in the

entertainment industry, downed tools and reorganised her busy schedule to have the facelift she’d talked about having for 10 years.

In that long lead-up she’d tried pushing back the years with anti-wrinkle injections to ease her frown lines until the drooping skin along her lower jaw drove her to have serious discussions with a number of high-profile surgeons.

Working around celebrities in an industry absorbed with self, made those conversations that much harder. “I’d spent enough years looking at other people with big scars at the back of their head, hair missing and keloid scars around the hairline so hair can’t regrow,� she says. “I like to pull my hair back and go, and I hated these jowls.�

She says her son was aware of her growing displeasure with her facial appearance, but she made her decision solely in consultation with her overseas connections.

By chance, a friend in the medical industry in Australia put Trish in touch with a plastic surgeon in Australia. His plain consulting rooms, lack of Hollywood slickness and assurances that the end result would be a fresher version of herself and not someone else, appealed to her. “I listened to everything he said, and it made sense to me,� she says. “It wasn’t cheap. It probably would have been cheaper if I’d had it done in America.�

She took six weeks off work and booked in for a facelift to address the larger ageing changes of her lower face and neck in combination with an upper and lower eyelid reduction.

her body and grafted into another area to correct facial asymmetry from previous skin cancer surgery scars.

Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons president, Associate Professor Mark Magnusson, says Australian women tend to want natural changes and not transformations; their goal being an improved appearance that others think looks relaxed, rested and attractive.

“Common surgical procedures include eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), brow lift, facelift and neck lift,” he says.

“The procedures are often performed in combination so that the rejuvenations are harmonious throughout the face, although the area around the eyes may be treated in isolation for both functional visual field benefits as well as to produce a more relaxed facial expression.”

Prof Magnusson says the facial surgery market is steady but there is no historical data as this is the first year that society members have been asked to supply information about the number of procedures they’re undertaking each year.

At this time there are no reliable national statistics for cosmetic procedures due partly to the fact that cosmetic surgery is both elective and not covered

by Medicare.

The other contributing factor is that many different practitioners perform invasive and non-invasive cosmetic procedures.

In his 70s and retired, Bob, and wife Rose, (not their real names) were well aware of how age had hooded Bob’s eyes and encircled his neck with rolls of unsightly flesh.

He says surgery to correct both had never occurred to him until he was referred a year ago by his general practitioner to a plastic surgeon for removal of a cancerous lesion on his finger.

Bob is the first person to say he had no idea that at his age he could be a candidate for cosmetic surgery.

“One naïve side of me didn’t even realise these sorts of procedures could be done quite safely in a very safe environment,” he says.

Nor did he realise that part of his eyelid surgery, because it was to improve his visual field, was eligible for a rebate from Medicare and his private health insurance; or that developments in drugs, equipment and techniques have made anaesthesia possible and safe for patients of all ages.

As his surgeon talked frankly about the procedures during post-surgery treatment for his finger, Rose became the gentle force that helped modest Bob do a 180-degree.

ages and occupations, he still worried about how well his skin would heal and the cost.

Until the night before surgery, Bob says he had no idea how real this commitment would be, and he wondered whether at his age it was worth it.

“Nobody really says to you you’re going to be in a lot of discomfort and pain, you’re not going to look good for a while, you’re going to be bruised and battered up to your neck and shoulders and around your eyes, and you’re thinking what have I done?” he says.

The first 24 hours after surgery as he lay in his hospital bed were, he says, “a nightmare”.

“It’s a lot of money and commitment at a time in your life when you have to watch your dollars.”

Rose had a more visionary and pragmatic approach to Bob’s surgery.

“I wanted him to look like his best self,” she says.

“I persuaded him of the difference it would make in having his appearance more normal, and it’s been fabulous. I think looking more handsome and younger, all that helps no matter how positive you are.”

Trish went into surgery feeling very nervous and second-guessing her decision. Post surgery she battled claustrophobia until dressings were removed from her eyes.

“There might have been a day or so when I said to myself, ‘I asked for this pain, so shut up’. But it’s like childbirth, you forget about it after a while.”

She hired a carer to look after her during those first weeks of her recovery and slept on a special bed she brought from the US to keep her back and neck

elevated. Like Bob, she has kept her surgery quiet and says she will continue to do so.

Bob worries he might be considered vain and Trish considers Australians in general narrow-minded about cosmetic surgery.

She says the surgery has dented her savings but lengthened her working life.

“I’m not a big spender, so I suppose I would have left it for the day I retire – if I ever retire. The only thing I wish is that I had done it a lot sooner. I love it. Is it perfect? I wasn’t perfect before I started.”

That next overseas trip for Bob and Rose might have to wait a bit longer.

In the meantime, Bob says his surgery has been “worthwhile all round” and has made him more conscious of keeping fit and enjoying life to the fullest.

English, like all languages, is not static and has evolved. If D. Parmiter had done some research he would have found out just how much English has evolved quite naturally over the centuries.

The idea of gender neutrality is just one of the reasons for the current evolutionary trends. It’s a response to the exclusiveness of words or descriptions that have been in use for some time.

A good example is the word “mankind” and the encouragement to use “humankind” in its place. The diehards say the generic word “mankind” IS gender-neutral and includes men and women.

Just try switching the generic word to “womankind” – what an absolute outcry there would be from the men in the community. They could rightly claim they are not included in the term, although clearly the letters m-a-n are in there. What needs to occur with this subject is the ability for us all to stand in someone else’s shoes and see what it feels like to be excluded and make sensible and appropriate changes accordingly.

English terms and cultural expectations evolve. As they are with the

current attempt to minimise exclusive terms by incorporating gender neutrality where it can be done. This issue is one of sensitivity, understanding and foresight.

I am 66 years old and part of the older generation that D. Parmiter refers to, and I try very hard to lead by example making sure that I am not stuck in the past, pontificating about how terrible is this modern world of English language changes. The only saving grace is that our generation won’t be around too much longer and the English language evolution will be steered by younger, more thoughtful, sensitive and understanding people than our generation.

LETTERS I WAS interested to read your article and review of the book The National Heritage Listed Glasshouse Mountains and see the old photograph of Yorkshire glass houses, the image of which prompted Cook to give the mountains their English name.

These glass houses were common in industrial areas during the industrial revolution in England and were essentially giant convection chimneys which drew air in at their base to fire the furnace inside and generate the temperatures needed to fuse sand and chemicals and produce molten glass.

This could then be worked and turned into various glass products.

Unfortunately they have nearly all gone, there being only four left in England.

One, and the best preserved, is the Red House Glass Cone at Wordsley near Stourbridge in the Black Country (West Midlands). Built in 1790 it only closed in 1936 and was the site of Stuart Crystal Glass production, some of which was used on the Titanic.

It is now a museum and visitors can see demonstrations of glass blowing on site. The surrounding area has an industrial museum at Dudley.Spanning the River Severn at nearby Coalbrook Vale the world’s first cast iron bridge can be still be seen and walked across.

Our slang may be localised, but the predominance of American television in particular, has exposed us all to cultures and pronunciations not entirely the Oxford English to which we were accustomed. Americans once believed, and some still do, that the USA is the centre of the universe. They know little of other nations showing little regard outside their own borders and influence.

Names like Steve Irwin and Crocodile Dundee, and Australian films and songs, are perhaps their only contact with our language Down Under.

It defies belief that the annoying overusage of “like” and some phrases such as the sacrilegious OMG, trending, on trend and moving forward, have been adopted into our culture by both politicians and internet users. We are now mimicking these trends, changing the way we speak, to satisfy those who think this is the modern version, up to date with global evolution in culture and language.

We must remember that the Oxford English is not written or spoken in America and is no longer a compulsory standard for our education institutions.

The English language of our past is overridden by our ever-broadening exposure to culturally accepted modifications of functional English and politically acceptable terms of our own and other English-speaking nations.

A language all of its own “So, yeah... you know ... that’s like wow! A-mazing! So, well, like, you know ... it’s unreal, yeah?” Let’s try to rescue the English language for our young people, writes DAVID PARMITER.

H

ave you watched our young people being interviewed on TV? Or even our middle aged or older people, who should know better?

Channel Thing TV reporter: “You saw this vicious assault happening outside the hotel this evening, Chantelle. Was it bad?

Was it scary for you?” (A 20-something who has no clue – and that’s just the reporter.)

But this is a live feed. Point: You do not ask yes/no questions in an interview.

“So, yeah, like, it was awesome. I mean, this guy hit this other guy and, like, they all ran off. So, yeah, I was, like, totally shocked.

Yeeeah ...”.

How sad that this person cannot communicate, even at the age of 18. And they put it to air – every half-hour.

The problem with modern English is that our young people (children) have not been educated properly in the use of their own language. So maybe we should consider some of the current ways of Newspeak.

George Orwell anyone? Big Brother speak? It’s here, now. People these days have been brainwashed. Families have

been told that they need to know about correct parenting. First, there is no such word as “parenting”. It is a manufactured gerund (verbal noun) from the common noun “parent”.

So, you are, or can become, a parent; but there is no way that you can parent anything or anybody. It just cannot be a transitive verb with the direct object: child.

Thus, I parent, you parent, he/she/it parents are out; and so is parenting.

So, do the research on how to be a proper parent. Get the advice from Mum and Grandma. They’ve done it, so they know it.

Indigenous children have one birth mother and several aunties or grannies, who usually assist with the child rearing.

Why don’t we learn from their wisdom and pass on their knowledge?

Let’s consider other manufactured Newspeak, spread much like cholera through our young people. “So, yeah, right; are you for real?”

And their friends don’t say things to them, they “go”: “So, he goes ‘sup?’ and she goes, ‘yeah, wassup with ya?’, so I go, ‘doncha know?’

They use computers, spell-check and buzzwords which often do not correspond to the way we speak to each other on a daily basis.

This is all happening “as we speak”; which means “now”! So, say so. “At the end of the day” we are talking nonsense. “Just get over it!” Which means cease and desist.

Stop it.

Next, there is the political nonsense of “This is our plan for the future, going forward.” Well, we can hardly be going backward.

Why do we pay these morons to spout this rubbish? And it’s not “my Government”. You and your lot are our Government and will be answerable to us in the future for your current failures.

So, stop saying that you own the Government because you do not own it.

We own you, because we (some of us) voted for you; and you and our Government are falling asleep at the wheel. Just like the last lot.

The next challenge, going forward, is to find the resources to give working families some “quality time with their families”.

What exactly is quality time?

Grandparents can give children and option to hiding in their bedrooms developing myopia and curvature of the spine while playing with their devices.

More time with Mum and/or Dad on their dumbphones, while their kids tickle their iPads or access bad stuff on the internet from their bedrooms.

Have their parents not learnt from their grandparents just how to be a parent?

Take them to the park and play chasey or netball or footy.

Pass on the knowledge that life is not a rehearsal; you only get one go at it.

So, hey, kids, we’re with you. Have fun and let’s learn stuff ... together.

The days when phones were phones Whenever the telephone rang at home in the 1960s, Mum dropped whatever she was doing and rushed to answer it, writes KATE CALLAHAN.

I

can see her still – skimming across the worn congoleum, hastily wiping her hands on the ever-present apron, and reaching to lift the heavy black bakelite handset from its cradle.

“Hello?” she would say with slight trepidation in her voice.

If the phone stopped ringing before it could be answered, she would lie awake half the night, catastrophising. What ill had befallen whom?

In those days, the telephone did not ring often and when it did, it rang for a purpose.

Information needed to be conveyed, important news exchanged, or questions asked.

A telephone was a luxury that many could not afford. Calls were expensive and timed, so conversations by necessity were kept short and to the point. And if you missed a call, there was no way of tracking the caller.

Years later when phones had become ubiquitous and local calls were cheap and untimed, Mum and Dad still specialised in extraordinary telephone brevity.

Hello. Good. Yes. Right. No. Fine. Okay. Bye. But phones were not for chit-chat in those days. That’s what letter-writing was for.

Mum was an enthusiastic practitioner of the art. My father was an avowed non-letterwriter, a fact of which he seemed quite proud, though I remember his mother complaining bitterly that she “never heard from him from one year to the next”.

Dad was one of those free-thinking blokes who paid scant heed to social conventions.

Three and a half years as a prisoner of war in Changi had earned him the right to pick and choose how he lived his life.

He didn’t go to funerals (“Better to see people when they’re alive”). He didn’t talk about the darkness of war (“That was then”) and he didn’t participate in commemorative events (“I’m not interested in parades”).

And he did not write letters (“Why write a letter when you can pick up the telephone?”).

Which is why, I think, we had a telephone in the days when most people were still trudging, pockets bursting with coins, to the red PMG public telephone cabinet (AKA the phone box) adjacent to the local post office to make calls.

Failing access to a phone box, another communication option was the telegram. Telegrams were speedy. Not email-speedy as we have come to expect in this age of instant gratification, but speedy nonetheless.

Telegrams were rung through to the local post office and delivered the same day, or even sooner if the sender paid a premium for an urgent (pink) telegram. Unfortunately, those simple slips of paper carried disturbing connotations for people who had lived through either or both World Wars. The fate of loved ones was generally conveyed by a pink telegram beginning with the dreaded “We regret to inform you…”.

There was no such negative association with telephones. In

fact, thanks to the party line, telephones were a source of endless entertainment and gossip for sticky-beaks brazen enough to eavesdrop on the conversations of others on the shared telephone circuit.

By the time I was old enough to use the phone, the party line had given way to single subscriber lines. To make a call, one lifted the handset and waited for the switchboard operator to say, “number please”.

With a few clicks and whirs you would be connected.

But calls were still timed.

After three minutes, the telephonist would interrupt with the standard question, “Are you extending for another three

minutes?” Long distance calls, known as trunk calls, were very expensive and reserved for special occasions or matters of importance.

It was wise to ring beforehand and book a line, otherwise you could be up for a wait while the trunk call was placed and the connection made.

By 1970, the local exchange had become automated and soon after subscriber trunk dialling (STD) was introduced to replace operator-connected trunk calls.

Yes, in those days, a phone was a phone, a single-use communication device. But in the space of my lifetime and yours, the telephone in its mobile form has become a camera, road map, GPS, voice recorder, daily newspaper and radio.

But would our parents, who practised patience and selfreliance, have fallen for the cunning charms of the smart phone and the constant, instant, perpetual availability that goes with it?

Somehow I doubt it.

First land sales a jewel for the Crown This year marks the 150th anniversary of land selection on the Sunshine Coast. AUDIENNE BLYTH investigates the first real estate scene.

I

n 1868, 150 years ago, the Crown Lands Alienation Act was passed and attracted our first settlers.

It was called an alienation act because the land was being alienated from the Crown.

One of the very first selections on the Sunshine Coast was in August that year and made at South Maroochy Crossing, now Yandina, on the Gympie Road and where fresh water was available.

Land along the waterways was in demand first, as the rivers were the highways into the farming land of the hinterland.

The following land acts of the 1870s and 1880s attracted even more settlers.

Each act carried stipulations and the blocks were paid off like hire purchase.

Homestead selections and conditional purchase selections had different costs.

The price of homestead selections was two shillings and sixpence per acre spread over five annual instalments, called rents, of sixpence per acre.

(Imagine, a selection of 80 acres and the cost was £10!)

Conditional purchase selections were agricultural land and first and second class pastoral land and were five shillings an acre.

For younger readers: 1 acre is a quarter of a hectare; 240 pence or 20 shillings equalled a pound. At the time of those first selections, a day’s wage was five shillings.

Mending our ways to end days of disposable clothing We were always taught as youngsters how to sew, mend, and pass on clothing if it wasn’t worn out, writes KAY McMAHON. Somewhere through the decades we have neglected teaching our children these skills.

T

he fast-fashion system has supported this neglect and even as a grandma it has become easier – and cheaper – to buy children’s wear at a chain store rather than dust off the sewing machine and try to stitch or re-stitch a garment to pass on to grandchildren.

Latest statistics on textile waste are disturbing. And with popular television shows such as the ABC’s War on Waste highlighting the amount of waste, landfill and non-reusable textiles still being made, there are many reasons to sit up and take notice of how to turn these statistics around for the benefit of future generations.

But, there is some momentum for change in the environmental impact of the fashion industry, and it’s echoing around the world.

With the rise of sustainability books and forums, upcycling workshops, ‘op’ shopping or second-hand clothing markets and platforms, and even our most prestigious fashion magazine Vogue Australia now having a Sustainability Editor-at-Large, the tide is turning.

Queenslanders are also rising to the challenge to educate the younger

generation and re-introduce them to the fun of sewing and creating unique outfits refashioned from existing or second-hand clothing and fabrics.

On Saturday, November 24, the refashion showcase WornOUT will be held in Brisbane.

With sponsorship currently from

Reverse Garbage and Textile Beat, the show and its workshops promise to be a major contribution to reducing textile and fashion waste of southeast Queensland.

“WornOUT is an exciting opportunity to nurture an upcycling culture that enables designers and makers to explore creativity in unique, empowering, and resourceful ways,” says event director Jane Milburn of Textile Beat.

Jane believes in the slow clothing movement and lives by her belief that “sewing and stitching are life skills, just like cooking and baking. Life skills enable us to provide for ourselves.”

Jane travels the country conducting workshops at local libraries on how to upcycle and refashion garments and textiles for personal use and spread the word for mindful thinking about the clothes we wear.

Event manager Bill Ennals of Reverse Garbage says it is challenging the thinking around what is worn out.

“Textiles are our biggest selling item (at Reverse Garbage) as local businesses divert excess stock to the warehouse for resale, rather than sending it to landfill.

And our clientele is really engaging around creative ways to reuse fibres and

fabrics,” he said. The showcases are open to anyone and details on how to enter are available at reversegarbageqld.com.au Each showcase will be curated by Elizabeth Kingston of @timeless_styling Instagram fame who believes that “WornOUT aims to spark unconventional and local designers or disruptive thinking, by inviting designers to engage in playful storytelling through garments made using pre-loved and salvaged materials”.

“Every day is a new opportunity to create when we bring together textures, colours and shapes in creative ways and reinvent them as refashion,” she said.

In addition to refashion, WornOUT will include a Cosplay showcase for children and adults. Workshops and exhibition details will be available this month.

The day promises to be fun, informative and entertaining.

Journey of the pink ballet slippers It was 50 years and a series of “small world” coincidences that reunited HELEN MOORE with a painting of a pair of pink ballet slippers she had completed in her youth.

W

hen I was about 11 years old and visiting the library, a book with an intriguing title, A Dream of Sadler’s Wells caught my eye. This was the beginning of my passion for the Lorna Hill series of books about the famous Sadlers Wells Ballet School in London.

Her descriptions of the English countryside told of a magical landscape I longed to see, and the glimpses into London’s world of ballet were a revelation to a girl growing up in a small Australian country town.

Years later, I left that small town and moved to the city where life was busy with new work experiences, flatmates and social activities. Family bonds remained strong however, and I visited home whenever I could.

Being at home gave me the opportunity to indulge in oil painting, one of my favourite pastimes. I was not a gifted painter, but I enjoyed it all the same and found it fascinating how a few strokes of a brush could change a subject or scene from shadow to light.

The front veranda of our house was the perfect studio. There was plenty of room to spread out and while I was painting, Mum would sit in an old comfy cane chair and watch.

These were close and companionable times, with Mum offering occasional words of encouragement when I became frustrated with my limited abilities.

One day I decided to paint a pair of pink ballet shoes from a picture I had seen in a book. After much mixing of colours, brushwork and shaping of the slippers, the painting was as finished as I could manage it.

I left it in the garden shed to dry and didn’t think about it again.

Mum thought about it, however, as I received a letter from her a few months later to tell me she had taken the

painting to be framed and had given it to her cousin’s young daughter as a gift.

That was fine with me. I felt a bit embarrassed but was pleased that the “pink slippers” had found a home.

Several years later, on another visit home, Mum and I were in town and walked past a second-hand shop where we spotted the pink slippers painting looking lonely in the shop window.

We rushed in, bought it for a few dollars and took it home, happy we’d saved it from a likely dismal fate.

The painting didn’t cross my mind again until more years later when I attended a performance of Swan Lake at the Royal Opera House at Convent Garden in London.

It was a sublime and memorable experience.

Never, as an 11-year-old so far away, would I have thought I would actually

attend a ballet at the original home of the Sadlers Wells Ballet School I had read so much about.

In the days that followed I travelled in Europe before returning to London ready for my flight home.

For lunch, I found my way to the popular Swiss Centre near Leicester Square, and took a seat in one of the restaurants. As I glanced towards the entrance, I let out a cry of amazement as Sherron, a former flatmate from Australia, walked in.

It was her birthday, and, on a whim, she had taken a train to spend the day in London. We were gobsmacked at this incredible coincidence and hugged each other in joy.

Over the next few years back in Australia, Sherron and I made sure we kept in touch. On one interstate move, I left a number of items with her for safe

keeping. Among them was the pink slippers painting. I had rescued it when Dad cleaned out the garage.

Following several more moves on both our parts, I lost track of the painting.

Unknown to me, the painting had been deposited with Sherron’s Mum for what would turn out to be decades.

Many years later, her Mum moved from interstate to the Gold Coast and the pink slippers came with her.

Several weeks ago, and more than 50 years after the pink slippers had been created, I visited the Gold Coast for a brief holiday with Sherron.

I went upstairs to the guest room and there, lying on the bed and triumphant in its survival, was the painting of the pink slippers.

It was showing only minimal signs of its age as it had, after all, been carefully looked after by a dear friend and two caring Mums.

The pink slippers have come the “full circle” and I’m happy to report they are now home to stay.

2. Manage stress When stressed, your body releases hormones which increase your blood sugar levels.

Find some things that you enjoy doing that reduce your stress. Be kind to yourself. Spending time in the garden, around nature or simply having plants in the house has been shown to reduce stress.

3. Increase daily exercise The recommended minimum level of exercise to reduce your risk of diabetes is 2½ hours a week. If you are not getting this, make small changes that you can maintain. For instance, if you meet a friend for coffee, suggest you have a walk first. Or when you get the mail each day, lock the house and walk around the block.

4. Improve diet Include plenty of different

vegetables in your diet and eat wholegrains. Stock your pantry with snacks that are healthy and filling such as nuts. If you are craving something sweet, try a piece of fruit or a few berries.

5. Watch what you drink Soft drinks, sports drinks and juices all add calories and sugar to your diet. Drinking too much alcohol will increase your risk of Type 2 diabetes. If you drink every day, try going alcoholfree for two days a week.

The safest drink of all is water. Mix it up with a dash of lemon or make some herbal teas.

Type 2 diabetes is often hard to track. It can start slowly and the signs may not easy to see.

KERRIE CONNECTS WITH EUMUNDI HERITAGE

Polites grew up on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. She was friends with Wally Colautti as they went to the same school together. After graduation they lost contact.

Kerri stayed in the area and worked at the local council in economic development for small business. After marrying and raising her family she separated from her partner but later, on Facebook, she reconnected with Wally.

In 2016 she decided to come to the Sunshine Coast for a fresh new start.

Kerri and Wally are getting married in November.

The pair have been volunteers at Kunda Park Lifeline Superstore for 18 months. They originally visited to look for furniture and loved the Lifeline Superstore so much they decided to become volunteers. “ I would recommend volunteering to anyone as this is a great environment full of fun, laughter and learning,” she said.

Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Information Centre has a wealth of knowledge and information about the hinterland town’s heritage and places of interest for visitors.

It also has an arts space for local artists and heritage exhibitions called “Wan’din’in” meaning a gathering of people in local Kabi Kabi language.

Since being on the Coast, Kerrie has utilised her skills as a volunteer at the Noosa Pengari Steiner School for more than 20 years, and also as a volunteer leader at the Noosa Sea Scouts for more than 10 years. She has been a volunteer with Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Information Centre for more than two years and describes the centre as a “living museum” with more than 95 per cent of the objects and photographs in displays coming from Eumundi locals.

“I enjoy the human contact, welcoming visitors to our area and informing them about places of interest and local walking trails.”

She said she gained great satisfaction from connecting families through research material.

“Last week a couple from Brisbane came in wanting to research their family history. The lady’s great great grandmother was one of Eumundi’s pioneers. Unbelievably, the same day another person, unknown to the couple, came in and his great grandmother was the sister of other lady’s relative,” she said.

“This is an interesting and enjoyable environment, ever changing, and it keeps me intellectually active and connected to our community. I have also made some great friends as we share a common bond in volunteering.”

Save the children – a wartime experience Although the battles of World War II didn’t extend to southern Queensland and New South Wales, it was advised for some children to be moved from areas considered high risk. ROMA HINES, now 85, shares memories of her evacuation experience.

T

he year was 1941. Our farm was in the Port Stephens area of NSW. A few miles down the road was Williamtown Airport, the base for allied air forces. Port Stephens Harbour, home to a huge contingent of ships, was 20 miles north.

Right behind us in the hills was Gan Gan military camp, where our soldiers trained before going overseas to fight.

The newspapers and wireless reported only gloom, with Pacific islands falling to the Japanese as they made their way south through Asia and the Pacific.

On the farm, lunchtime was always 12.30 pm so Dad could listen to the news on the wireless. As war reports came on, Mum and Dad would glance anxiously at the huge map of the world that hung on the wall and raise their eyebrows.

Living in a small country town, the only entertainment was the local Saturday night dance, for which Mum, a great dance pianist, provided the music.

Soldiers flocked to the dance.

Some of the young soldiers were away from home for the first time and we would invite them to Sunday night tea. The menu never changed: cold mutton and salad, custard, fruit and jelly,

and homemade sponge cake, filled with fresh cream from our cow. Afterwards was a sing-song around the piano.

Mum was delighted when her cousin Tommo from Warialda arrived at the army camp. Little did we know that just as Tommo was finding comfort in our little village, before long we would be doing the same in his.

In December 1941 Pearl Harbour was bombed. Five days later, the Australian Government decided to evacuate children from vulnerable areas.

Mum had an aunt and uncle on a sheep property near Warialda. My 13-year-old brother, Colin, and I were to live there, along with our four cousins from a dairy farm just down the road, until danger had passed.

Accompanied by our cousins’ mother, Aunty Clarise, we left by train the following night. The departure will always live in my mind. My stern-faced parents clutched us and told us to be “good for Aunty”. Although I was only eight, I sensed the trauma and upheaval, a feeling that stayed with me for days.

After a 15-hour train trip, we arrived at Warialda to start a new life with an elderly aunt and uncle and their daughter

MEMORIES Mornings were busy emptying chamber pots, helping with breakfast, clearing up, and taking morning tea up to the shearing sheds or paddocks. And there was endless washing and drying up.

But the nights were dismal. I’d cry in my bed and wish I was home. I didn’t know there was such a thing as homesickness until I heard Aunt Flo discussing my problem with Mary. They wisely decided to keep me busy with kitchen chores, so I’d have less time to fret.

We had brought our bikes with us, so we could ride to school. Koloona was a one-teacher school, several miles from my uncle’s property.

Each morning we would meet up with children from neighbouring properties and ride to school together.

I loved our new school. We started the day with the national anthem and saluting the flag.

The playground had swings and I was mesmerised as my new friends soared high in the air. I had never been on a swing and was overjoyed when I finally grasped the idea of using body and legs to gain momentum. It was a great feeling of achievement.

The boy who sat in front of me in class was Bernie Kent, who was nine years old. He would often turn around in class and with a flashy smile have a little chat with me. We “evacuees” were something of a novelty to the local children, and as such, regarded as a trophy to win over.

One day he whispered that a fortune teller had told him he would meet a special girl with big brown eyes and fair hair. He said to the fortune teller, “I’ve already met her”. And there was that gorgeous smile again. I blushed from ear to ear and decided that this was what “being in love” felt like.

If we awoke to the sound of rain, it was very exciting because it meant no school. Ever tried riding a push bike through wet black soil? The wheels would be clogged within 50 yards. So, when it rained, we could run amok until Uncle collared us and gave us jobs to keep us out of mischief.

Roma Hines was evacuated when she was only eight years old but remembers it clearly.

Mutton was the mainstay of our diet.

When Uncle slaughtered a sheep, we knew to expect more mutton chops, mutton fricassee, mutton stew, roast mutton and cold mutton sandwiches.

As a break from mutton, rabbit was high on the list of menu options.

Uncle had given the “big boys”, my brother Colin and our cousin, Monty, aged 12, the job of providing the rabbits. With the prospect of selling the skins for up to eight shillings a pound, the boys would be up at dawn to do the rounds of their traps, arriving back later with a full sugar bag.

We were very good at entertaining ourselves and a surprising number of ideas were conceived while sitting on the dunny. There was no toilet paper, just squares of the local newspaper cut to an accommodating size and threaded on string conveniently hung on a nail near the dunny seat. Going to the toilet was a good opportunity to catch up with local events.

The article began with the heading, “Largest funeral in Warialda”, so when Saturday came, and the chores were finished, we began our own preparations.

We stuffed two dead mice, collected from traps, into the coffin, one of Uncle’s old tobacco tins.

and leaves from Aunt Flo’s garden. We dug a hole large enough to accommodate the tobacco tin.

Aunt Flo and Mary graciously allowed us to borrow hats, gloves, scarves and even high-heeled shoes. With great dignity, we were now ready to conduct a funeral service for the wee beasties.

Caterwauling the hymns with as much tuneless energy as we could muster, we wound our way around the massive flower gardens, stopping now and then to sob dramatically.

Finally, with heads bowed, we tipped the toy cart up and the tobacco-tinned bodies clattered into their final resting place. One day, Uncle Sid returned from a trip to town with the truck loaded with bags and parcels. He came to the door and bellowed, “So who’s got a birthday today?” I rushed out and he threw a little package at me. I recognised my Mother’s handwriting and tore the wrappings open. There was a birthday card, a pair of gloves and a pretty brooch.

Inside the card my Mother had written: “Now you are 9, little daughter of mine, and though many miles away, I hope this present will help to say, Many Happy Returns of the Day.” Well that opened the flood-gates. I sobbed and bellowed, “I want to go home to my Mum!” Aunt Flo drew me closed and patted my back. Uncle Sid jammed his hat on his head and, as he stomped outside, yelled, “Florence! Shut that bloody kid up.”

We stayed at Rose Valley until late 1942. The big boys remained a few months longer as they were old enough to help with the sheep and workmen were in short supply.

During 1942, Darwin was bombed several times and there were at least 235 casualties. Broome was strafed by Japanese fighter planes. Katherine, Townsville, Mosman and Port Headland were all subject to air raids.

How lucky we were to have a loving family to take us in!

Time for a good spring clean Spring has sprung and every year, along with the good old house spring clean, it’s a great time for a little computer or device cleaning, writes NATHAN WELLINGTON. delete it, because it could cause complications down the track.

If you have just bought a new PC, the manufacturers “conveniently” fill them with what we affectionately call bloatware, and while some of it may be useful for some users, for many it’s just wasted space, and often intrusive in the way that it pushes itself on you.

If all else fails, there is the nuclear option of a complete system reinstall.

he new wave of clutter is digital hoarding, such as those 5000 photos you transferred from your phone to your computer, or those 10,000 emails dating back to 2007.

Over time, if you don’t keep on top of your digital files they quickly get on top of you until it becomes just too overwhelming to deal with.

You may scoff, but I have clients who, instead of facing the prospect of clearing out their unwanted photos, emails, data, music or documents will actually go out and buy another computer, only to fill that one up quickly too.

Some of them have more than four computers on the go. It’s just not necessary, as there is a better (and cheaper) way.

Why don’t you take this opportunity to give your computer and/or device a good clean out and be ruthless.

Go through folders and see if there is any reason you are keeping so many photos. Do you really need to keep your

emails dating back 10 years?

If it’s only once a year, those few hours spent cleaning out your computer is time well spent. There is also some great cleaning software to clear out those built-up temporary files that are made during general day-to-day use.

“Ccleaner” provides both a free and paid cleaner that monitors apps that use system resources, cleans up unwanted system files and sorts out any errant registry entries that may be slowing down your PC. There’s a Mac version for macOS users on systems that may be running at a snail’s pace. You can also use Windows own inbuilt Disk Clean-up to remove old system files.

Look through the programs you use and delete the ones you no longer need.

On Windows 10, click on the Start Menu > Settings > System > Apps and Features, then select the App you don’t use and click Uninstall, but only the ones you know. If you don’t recognise it DON’T

Suzuki comes up with another little beauty Suzuki is one of those automotive brands that most people know and trust, even if many of them have never sat behind the wheel, writes BRUCE McMAHON.

S

uzuki cars – and often re-named counterparts such as Holden Barinas and Drovers – have long been part of the Australian motoring scene.

Some were bought as city runabouts, some as first cars, and some as pint-sized four-wheel drives.

The range is a touch wider these days, more sophisticated yet still a bunch of handy machines at pretty much the right prices.

And for many buyers, the Suzuki brand is also synonymous with economical motoring for this is a motor manufacturer which rarely strays from its heritage as a small-car maker.

So little surprise then that the RACQ has once again, after adding up the numbers, declared that Suzuki’s Swift and Vitara models are cheap to own and run.

NAMBOUR HERO REMEMBERED

Caloundra Family History Society president Valerie Thornton thanks Dot Whittington for sharing the Jim Hocking story.

ANOTHER fascinating lesson in history was presented to members and visitors at the Caloundra Family History Research meeting when Your Time editor and author, Dot Whittington, presented the story of young Nambour hero, Pilot Officer Jim Hocking.

In July 1944, Jim bravely saw his crew parachute to safety as he steered his crippled plane away from the town of March, in the Cambridge region of England, and saved many lives while sacrificing his own.

Dot’s new edition of her book, March Hero, adds two extra chapters that feature Jim’s wartime letters home.

Aged just 21 when he died, Jim is still honoured by the residents of March and was recently awarded the Star of Courage, the second highest bravery honour in Australia.

Jim’s nephew, Ian Hall, who accompanied Dot, was proud to visit March and learn more about his loved and admired uncle.

March Hero is a popular addition to our interesting and varied library as it is to the library in the village of March in England.

MORE than 60 local artists meet each week in Caloundra to collaborate on artworks in watercolour, acrylic, oil, pastel and mixed media.

They work cooperatively, assisting each other with subject matter, design ideas, colour harmonies, focal points – and now it has all come together for the annual Caloundra Arts Centre Association (CACA) Fine Art Experience exhibition and sale.

Visitors will be able to join one of the many “artist tours” of the exhibition, where artists will discuss the works. In the higher-level alcove overlooking the main floors, two “Artists in Residence” will be working on their latest works. All of the artwork is for sale.

NONAGENARIAN Dorothy Jenkins surely knows how to keep busy.

The Tinbeerwah Art Group member donned her beret and got busy putting the finishing touches to one of the paintings she will exhibit at the group’s Annual Art Show at Tinbeerwah Hall this month.

She has been a member for 15 years and at 92, is a shining example of how staying fit, and participating in various social activities keeps you young.

Dorothy walks 5kms twice a week with the Tewantin Tickers Walking Group, plays mahjong, and attends a weekly ballet for seniors class.

She recently returned from a month-long trip to France and her native Scotland, and is now planning a trip to New Zealand.

At the Tinbeerwah Art Group seniors are discovering or rediscovering talents and skills they never knew they had or have forgotten they had.

“Having spent many years pursuing careers and bringing up families it is only in retirement that we realise there is now time to take up a new hobby,” committee member Jan

The pros and cons of granny flats

The federal government has a number of concession cards to cover different situations. NARELLE COOPER discusses the three main cards.

Granny flat arrangements are an increasingly common means of families managing the care of an elderly parent, writes DON MACPHERSON.

ll Department of Human Services cards allow the owner access to concessions on prescription medicines and other Government and state/territory discounts (including some local savings, depending on the generosity of your local government).

THE THREE MAIN CARDS ARE • Pensioner Concession Card • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card • Low Income Health Care Card If you have a Pensioner Concession Card, you will have received it automatically because you have met a number of different criteria, including Age Pension or are over 60 and have been in receipt of some form of Centrelink allowance for more than nine months AND, of course, those who lost their pension on January 1, 2017, due to the increases in the assets test.

As the receipt of this card is “automatic” I cannot help further.

However, how do you get the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card?

If you do not qualify for an Age Pension because of assets or income limits, you are classed as a self-funded retiree and the Department of Human Services will issue you with a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card if your annual income is less than $53,799 for singles, $86,076 for couples

(combined income); and $107,598 combined for couples who are illness separated. PLUS: you must be over age pension age, meet residential requirements and not be in receipt of any other income support or benefit from Centrelink or Veteran’s Affairs.

Annual income is based on your taxable income (plus non-taxable foreign income, plus investment losses, plus employer fringe benefits etc, plus reportable super contributions, plus the ‘deeming’ of any allocated pensions).

The good news is that it is NOT asset tested. This card can be a valuable addition to your card holder.

For those that have not yet reached Age Pension age, there is the Low Income Health Care Card. Eligibility is based on your income over the eight weeks prior to making a claim.

It is $552 a week for singles (equates to an eight-week income of $4416 or annual income of $28,704) or $954 a week for couples (equates to an eightweek income of $7632 or annual income of $49,608).

Once you are receive the card your income can move up by 25 per cent before the card is cancelled.

ranny Flats are often seen as preferable to moving into an aged care facility as they keep the family together and provide close care and support for the elderly parent.

But caution is required, both in terms of Centrelink consequences, and also to preserve personal family relationships.

A common way involves the sale of the elderly person’s home, and payment to a child to live in the child’s home for the parent’s lifetime. That may include an extension being built.

Another way can involve the transfer of the elderly parent’s home to the child, with the child (and their family) moving into the home of the elderly parent, again with the elderly parent having a life interest in the property.

Gifts to children can fall foul of the gifting/deeming provisions of Centrelink but done properly (with a legal document) a granny flat agreement may not trigger these provisions, with benefit for all involved, without loss of pension.

The Centrelink consequences need to be fully explored prior to any agreement.

There are many risks, however, such as relationship breakdown between the parent and their child, relationship breakdown for the child and their spouse,

financial problems for the child (even bankruptcy), health deterioration of the elderly parent (who needs extra care the child can’t provide) or of the child who can no longer care for the parent.

All these possibilities need to be covered in the agreement. Also, a wide range of items such as payment of rates, insurance and electricity, cooking and care for the elderly person, perhaps offset against care for the grandchildren, may need to be documented.

Where there are a number of siblings, an arrangement with one child may cause tensions with the others, as the transfer or gift at the heart of the granny flat arrangement takes away from the estate and can effectively benefit one child in preference to others.

A family meeting is recommended to consider the pros and cons of any arrangement before it is put in place.

Properly drawn agreements, with careful consideration of the consequences in all respects can achieve a beneficial arrangement for all concerned, being mindful of all the risks, both financially and personally, of any granny flat arrangement.

Simple ways to keep cholesterol in the healthy range Lowing cholesterol levels can be as simple as swapping a few foods in your diet and adding a few supplements, and writes TRUDY KITHER, there are also natural remedies.

T

he recommended ranges for optimal cholesterol levels are usually classified as desirable when below 200mg/dL, borderline high at 200-239 and high at 240 and above.

A naturally occurring substance made by the liver, cholesterol is required by the body for the proper function of hormones, nerves and cells.

Cholesterol is normally kept in balance, but an unhealthy diet which is high in hydrogenated fats and refined carbohydrates can disrupt this delicate balance, leading to increased cholesterol levels. This imbalance produces an elevated LDL (bad cholesterol) and low HDL (good cholesterol), which increases the risk of heart attack or stroke. Other causes can include physical inactivity, stress, hypothyroidism and diabetes.

However, not all cholesterol is created equal. LDL cholesterol, also known as “bad cholesterol,” is the form that can build up on the artery walls and increase your risk of heart disease.

HDL cholesterol, on the other hand, is often called “good cholesterol” because it travels through the bloodstream, removing harmful cholesterol from the

arteries to help enhance heart health.

Here are some ways to lower cholesterol naturally with foods you can enjoy: Olive oil - Loaded with heart-healthy unsaturated fats, extra-virgin olive oil has been shown to reduce bad LDL cholesterol levels to enhance heart health.

Seeds - Varieties such as the nutritious flaxseeds have been shown to reduce both total and LDL cholesterol levels to keep your heart healthy.

Lecithin granules - Lecithin (derived from soy beans) acts as an emulsifier which helps dissolve fat and cholesterol.

Sprinkle one tablespoon on breakfast cereal, salads or in smoothies. Have up to three teaspoons a day.

Sweet potatoes - These sweet and tasty vegetables contain several healthpromoting proteins and compounds that have been shown to decrease cholesterol in animal models.

Green tea - Rich in antioxidants and catechins, green tea is one of the healthiest beverages that you can add to your routine. Drinking green tea can decrease levels of total and LDL.

Avocados - Avocados are high in healthy fats, potassium and fibre, all of which can help to keep cholesterol under control. They have been shown to increase levels of good HDL cholesterol, and can also reduce total and bad LDL cholesterol as well FOODS TO AVOID: Sugar and refined carbohydrates - Added sugar and refined carbs from highly processed foods can reduce your desirable cholesterol ratio by decreasing good cholesterol levels in the blood Transfats - Found in processed and pre-packaged baked foods, transfats can increase LDL cholesterol, decrease HDL cholesterol and boost the risk of heart disease. Try to cut these unhealthy fats out of your diet completely by minimizing your intake of processed foods.

Supplements to include: Fish oil (1000-2000mg daily) – Jampacked with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil can be especially beneficial if fish doesn’t always make it into your weekly dinner menu. It is effective at increasing levels of good HDL in the blood, to clear out LDL from the arteries.

COQ10 (200-300mg daily) Coenzyme Q10 has been shown to be useful in lowering cholesterol levels. It works by removing excess cholesterol and preventing atherosclerosis to keep your arteries clear.

Niacin (Vit B3) - (1500mg daily) – This Vitamin is commonly used in the treatment of high cholesterol. Niacin has been shown to reduce triglycerides and lower levels of LDL cholesterol, whilst also increasing beneficial HDL cholesterol levels as well.

Red yeast rice (1200mg twice daily) - Derived from white rice that has undergone fermentation. One analysis of 13 studies showed that red yeast rice was effective at decreasing both triglycerides and LDL cholesterol.

Aged garlic (500mg daily) - In addition to adding garlic to your diet, you may also want to consider adding an aged garlic extract such as Kyolic garlic to your supplement regime. Aged garlic extract, in particular, has been shown to have cholesterol-lowering properties in both human and animal studies.

EGGS SHELL OUT GOODNESS – DISPELLING THE MYTHS

Aside from the types of fats and oils we eat, their quality and source has a significant effect on our health, writes PHIL JOHNSTON.

F

ats need to be of the purest quality.

Once fats are processed or extracted from the source – olive, oil seed, grain or nut they rapidly oxidise (or rust) and begin to go rancid.

As bacteria, moulds and fungi start to grow in the oil, it becomes dangerous to consume. Temperature, storage, aging and light accelerate the process. Rancid fats hurt your blood vessels and brain.

Avoid broken nuts, ground seed-nut meals or flours and packaged nut milks.

Avoid all processed cooking oils such as olive, sunflower and grapeseed, as well as health-fad oils including coconut and flax. Frying or stir-frying with oils is a no-no. Use clean water-based or dry cooking methods instead, such as stir-fry, pressure-cook, steam or bake.

Fat stores toxins. Pesticides and chemicals accumulate in the fat of livestock. By regularly consuming meat you will accumulate those substances in your body.

Animal fat clogs the brain and slows

mental functions. The decaying flesh also triggers our immune system, producing inflammation and auto-immune problems which are great hasteners of dementia and circulatory disease.

We need to consume a small amount of oil with each meal. I recommend a small serve of nuts or olives, oil seeds and sun-dried fruit with each meal. Varying the type with each meal is important.

Try these suggestions: Nuts (small serve only): 3-4 almonds, a walnut, hazelnuts, pine nuts, brazil, pecan, fresh coconut etc.

Oil seeds: sunflower seeds (1 rounded dstspn), unhulled sesame seeds (rounded tsp), pumpkin seeds, flax seeds (boil some water and soak 1 dstspn overnight, drain water and consume with breakfast).

Sun-dried fruit (no added vegetable oils): 1 dstspn of raisins, currents, sultana, or a few figs, dates, apricots.

ALL THE BETTER TO HEAR YOU The struggle to hear conversations in a restaurant or a crowded room, is one of the most common problems presented to hearing specialists.

Most people instinctively place themselves in the corner so that they can see everything going on. That’s great if you’re a “people watcher”, but it’s the worst thing you can do if you have hearing problems. Our ears face forward too, so if you’re facing the crowd, you’re hearing the crowd.

Restaurants 30 years ago were comfortable places to communicate. They had comfortable chairs, thick carpet, curtains and table clothes, and soft background dinner music.

Changing interior design has conspired to make dining out an exercise in frustration. There is a long-standing myth that eggs are bad for you because they contain cholesterol.

It isn’t true.

The Heart Foundation says you shouldn’t be worrying about cholesterol in eggs as there are other, more important ways to keep cholesterol down such as not eating too many cakes and pastries and eating more fruit and vegetables.

Eggs contain several different nutrients – vitamins A, D and E, as well as B12, riboflavin and folate – that are good for your body. They’re also packed with minerals, including iodine, iron, phosphorus and selenium, meaning including two eggs in your daily diet is super beneficial.

Studies show that a protein rich breakfast can help improve feelings of satisfaction, reduce feelings of hunger and lead to a lower intake of kilojoules over the course of the day, particularly from high fat, high sugar evening snacks.

According to one study, including eggs as part of a low-calorie diet can help speed up the rate of weight loss.

Eggs can also make you feel full for longer, meaning they’re useful to help lower your calorie intake overall.

A serve of eggs contains 59 per cent of the recommended dietary intake of selenium, 32 per cent of the RDI for vitamin A and 14 per cent of the RDI for

iron – all nutrients that are well known for bolstering your immune system.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are two antioxidants found in eggs that also happen to be found in the macular region of the eye. Current evidence shows that including eggs in your diet can help eye health over the long term by protecting against retinal degeneration.

Eggs contain a special type of vitamin-like substance called choline which is difficult to find in other commonly eaten foods. It helps metabolise fat, maintain healthy cell membranes and may improve brain functioning and memory.

It can be difficult to obtain sufficient Vitamin D in winter but eggs can provide a useful boost to vitamin D intake as they are one of only a few food sources of this important nutrient. Vitamin D is important for helping the body absorb calcium, keeping bones and teeth strong.

If you are looking to gain muscle or bulk up, protein is key. The high-quality protein found in eggs has been shown to be an excellent way of getting protein in both before and after exercise.

And it’s a myth that you need to focus on egg whites only. A recent study found that eating whole eggs after exercise is more conducive to muscle development than consuming the protein from egg whites alone.

Pet subject for aged care

DISABILITY EXPO CONNECTS PEOPLE

A

ustralian households have one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world, yet it doesn’t carry through to aged care services, according to a study by the Animal Welfare League of Australia (AWLA).

The 2017 AWLA Pets in Aged Care Study revealed that while 63 per cent of Australian households were pet owners, only 18 per cent of residential aged care facilities allowed pets to reside with their owners.

Those ageing in their own home can’t always access the support to keep their pets either, with only 9 per cent of in-home services saying that they offer pet friendly services.

The result is that many seniors are forced to give away or surrender their beloved family pets when they make the move to aged care.

According to AWLA figures, about 7 percent of surrenders are directly related to the necessity for aged care.

This figure is believed to be higher when taking in other issues facing senior pet owners

such as unsuitable pet accommodation and lack of financial means to take care of a pet. An estimated 9600 surrenders to the RSPCA were senior-related.

“Elderly people moving into aged care can already feel a level of sadness due to leaving their family home and this sense of loss can be even more profound when they need to separate from their much-loved pets,” says Seasons Aged Care chief executive officer Nick Loudon.

“When a resident is strongly bonded to their pet and the care of that pet is well-supported there are huge benefits for that resident which creates a ripple affect across to other residents

and staff.” Aged services that support and encourage pet ownership may be in the minority, but the wide-ranging health benefits of pets for seniors is well documented.

Pet ownership helps to decrease feelings of loneliness and isolation, while increasing social interaction, providing purpose and meaning and improving the quality of life of owners.

Further benefits of pet friendly aged care services include: • Eases the transition to aged care • Reduces feelings of loneliness • Health benefits such as reduced stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure and increased aerobic activity.

• Greater uptake of aged care services due to not having to surrender their much-loved pet • Reduces animal surrender rates to shelters • Helps increase feelings of independence • Boosts morale and happiness for both staff and residents

Sharon Fulwood, a mother of three, two with different disabilities, found that researching and finding everything needed to support a family member with a disability was difficult and time consuming.

At every step of her children’s development, she needed to research disability aids and equipment, speciality products, specialist advice and appropriate support networks.

Experiencing frustrations and a disconnect in the sector motivated Sharon to do something for others.

She made it her mission to make it easier for Sunshine Coast families, carers and people with disabilities find the support, services and products to help them improve their quality of life.

The Disability Expo Sunshine Coast, the Sunshine Coast’s biggest Expo for people with disabilities, their families, carers and friends, was born and will be held in Kawana during Disability Action Week this month.

Sharon has created an event to connect businesses and networks within the disability sector together with families and carers.

The expo aims to assist local families and carers make informed decisions in relation to their loved ones and introduce them to local providers of these services and products.

It brings together more than 60 exhibits of products and services from Sunshine Coast businesses such as Just Better Care, Help Employment & Training, Volunteering Sunshine Coast and Steps Group.

“Why go to Brisbane, when you can get the products and services you need from a local?,” she says.

Other services and providers include health and fitness, social activities and recreation, independent living services and products, assistance products and support service providers.

BOOK review THIS IS GAIL

JO BOURKE I love medical shows and the TV program RPA has always been one of my favourites. Dr Chris O’Brien stood out – not only for his professionalism and expertise as a head and neck surgeon but also for his compassion and warmth towards his patients.

Like thousands of others I was shocked to hear news of his brain tumour diagnosis, and like others, I waited for snippets of news of his treatment and attempts to beat it over three years.

I flew through this book, apart from the times I had to stop to wipe tears away!

Any readers who have lost a loved one may well identify with the eloquent descriptions of loss and adjustments and eventual acceptance.

This is an inspiring book, an easy read but a profound one. Spare a moment to Google The Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and be amazed at the legacy Chris left for Gail to accomplish.

TONY HARRINGTON The themes of this true story are about true love, death, spirituality and bereavement.

I didn’t want to read this book as I had lost my mother a week earlier. I found it heart wrenching and I shed many a tear.

Having graduated as a physiotherapist, Gail takes a back seat to her husband’s outstanding and very public career, choosing to support him and raise their children.

After the early death of her husband and son, Gail desperately searches for signs from their spirits to guide her but finally comes to the realisation that her depth of her pain was due to her depth of loving and being loved.

She finally moves on to become a happy, contented widow who takes on aggressive corporate board members to achieve her husband’s dream and build the holistic Chris O’Brien Lifehouse cancer centre.

Her true self, a strong but kind and caring pocket rocket, is revealed. This is Gail.

A good read. 7/10

MARY BARBER I found it interesting to follow Chris and Gail’s campaign to secure funding for a world-class cancer centre. They called on many Australians of fame and fortune. Andrew Forrest, Quentin Bryce and Kevin Rudd all helped in their own way.

Chris O’Brien’s contribution to the lives of cancer patients and his vision for a holistic cancer treatment and research centre are impressive.

He certainly seemed to have been plugged into a universal battery to achieve what he did.

At times, this book was uncomfortable to read.

Hearing how Gail O’Brien and her family struggled with their grief was like walking in on a private conversation, especially when the blows kept coming.

As a tribute to a man and woman who galvanised fellow Australians into supporting big causes, it’s a good read.

But be sure you are not feeling low when you start reading it.

ELIZABETH PASCOE This book is a loving tribute from a daughter to her mother. It touched me deeply. Gail’s husband, the surgeon Christopher O’Brien, died after enduring five brain operations.

Then another tragedy stuck the family, with the death of son and brother Adam. How does one cope with such grief?

Thus began a spiritual journey for Gail.

She was invited to join the board appointed to oversee the planning and structure of the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, which was her husband’s dream.

After a few dissenting bumps along the way, Gail dug in. And she won the day.

At the end of Juliette’s book, Gail has written a letter to her daughter which says it all.

In 2008, inspirational surgeon Chris O’Brien published his bestselling memoir of his battle with brain cancer, Never Say Die. When he died in 2009, his wife set out to describe her own journey through loss to renewal and new purpose.

From a busy surgeon’s wife and mother of a picture-perfect family to a widow in her mid-50s, she was grieving not only her husband but also her son, Adam, who died not long after Chris.

While coming to terms with both a public and private loss, Gail took on Chris’s legacy as steward of the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse cancer centre, navigating the often bruising politics of boards and committees to ensure his vision was realised. She also went back to work as a physio after being out of the workforce for 20 years, while still holding her family together. She reinvented herself and found that she could survive and even thrive in a world without her soul mate.

JOHN KLEINSCHMIDT I was a regular viewer of RPA more than a decade ago, the main drawcard being the compassionate, inspirational and skilled work of Dr Chris O’Brien.

The first half of this book until Chris’s death in 2009 reinforced the admiration I had for this wonderful doctor and laid bare his drive to realise his vision for holistic cancer care, and the efforts of his dedicated wife and family to extend his time on earth.

Gail’s true strength and character are then revealed through a mosaic of grief, heartbreak on losing her first-born son, despair and determination.

Gail proved to be a powerful advocate to realise Chris’s vision, and inspirational in resetting her purpose in life.

Uplifting and enlightening.

SUZI HIRST Chris O’Brien was a hero to many people but reading this book made me realise how lucky he was to have such a strong wife in Gail.

The book is beautifully written by their daughter Juliette and is a fine testament to a family that shared great love and loss. I was very moved in places and shed a good few tears along the way.

Gail is an amazing woman and through Chris’s vision and her determination and often against all odds, the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse was opened seven years after Chris’s first operation.

Cancer treatment is tough. Chris taught us that the treatment should be holistic, treating the whole person – mind body and soul and the family.

I enjoyed this book.

Liverpool more than a Beatles tribute It’s not possible to be in Liverpool without being exposed to constant reminders that this is the home of The Beatles, writes RUSSELL HUNTER.

D

espite that only two are still with us, signs of the Fab Four are everywhere – including the occasional statue.

You can still stroll down Penny Lane and pass a barbershop (though the fire station never existed – it was perhaps poetic licence) and John Lennon’s home is a shrine. But fab though they doubtless were, there’s more to this city than The Beatles and the 1960s Mersey sound.

When the pre-fame Beatles were playing the Cavern cellar club their city was known more for its docks than anything else. British merchant seamen could be heard on trains and buses heading for “the Pool” to find work on the ships coming and going to all ports on the planet.

While Liverpool moves more freight today than ever it did, it comes and goes from a high-tech container port upriver from the city’s docks. Those docks stand silent now, their heavy cast iron rings that once fastened great ships to the quay, set empty and forlorn in the cold stone.

Much like their London counterparts, Liverpool’s docklands are in a process of rebirth as apartment blocks for a new age

of inner city dwellers. One can but wonder what the old dockers might have thought.

But the ferry across the Mersey is still there (more than one in fact) functioning now as a pleasure trip more than a means of public transport – the ubiquitous tunnel industry has seen to that – but still well worth a ride that affords a glorious view of the twin Liver Birds that dominate the waterfront.

The aptly named Dazzle ferry boats (a single glance will explain the name) took us on a round trip on a very affordable ticket. On a cold November day with the boat pitching in what could only have been Cape Horn-style, the round trip challenged the sailor in all of us. The swell even in the river was, well, dramatic.

What could it be like out at sea? (Hardy travellers can find out on the ferries’ annual jaunt up the coast to Blackpool) Back on terra firma, a street stroll tells of a city reinvented where trendy shops and eateries sit comfortably among older edifices steam-cleaned of their smoggy grime. Like the Lennon-McCartney fire engine, it’s a clean machine.

On Hope Street, not far from those

docks stand the Philharmonic Dining Rooms. Actually, it’s a pub, a spectacular Victorian pile built by, and for, one of the city’s 19th century brewers.

Named for the concert hall opposite, it has what can only be described as an atmosphere, enhanced by the sign enjoining lady tourists and sightseers to consult a member of staff before entering the gents’ toilet. Not because of any unseemly sights they might encounter but to ensure the privacy of the male users of the facility where resplendent roseate marble urinals have become an international tourist attraction.

The building itself is Grade 2 listed – while the gents loo gets a Grade 1. A short (ish) walk from the Philharmonic stands the ruined St Luke’s Anglican Church at the corner of Berry and Leece streets.

Built between 1811 and 1832 it is now colloquially known as the “Bombed Out Church” and it’s easy to see why.

Like all of Britain’s (and Germany’s) major cities, Liverpool took a fearful aerial pounding in World War II and St Luke’s has been allowed to stand as a roofless reminder and memorial. But like the city that surrounds it, it’s not a sad place.

Home to exhibitions, activities and curiosities it has an unadorned frankness that reflects Liverpool itself. Bombed out it may be, but St Luke’s has a future as well as a past. As the song In my Liverpool Home has it: “If you want a cathedral we’ve got one to spare” – and they do.

At either end of Hope Street stand the Anglican Cathedral of Liverpool and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic cathedral.

Opened in 1967 after more than a century of planning and false starts, the Catholic cathedral is a stunning modern circular design giving rise to a central tower that suggests (but isn’t) a steeple.

“The Mersey Funnel” it has sometimes been fondly termed.

Never far from controversy, the building has been the subject of a millionpound lawsuit when it was found that the roof leaked and the stunning mosaics were falling apart. But, repaired and refurbished, this bravest of buildings lives on.

The crypt was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in the 1920s and work commenced on what was to be the great Cathedral but stopped after the crypt was completed in 1930.

Some reports say the project ran out of money and others that it just ran out of commitment. Whatever the truth – probably a bit of both – what is left today beneath the Catholic cathedral is one of Britain’s great achievements.

A sense of awe is only compounded by a walk through these halls where it’s possible to feel small but not insignificant.

It’s just one of the myriad attributes of this special and treasured place that is also home to concerts, exhibitions, private functions and – again only in Liverpool – an annual beer festival.

And as in most of England’s great northern cities the people aren’t so hard to meet. The woman beside me on the bus gave me her life story in 14 stops.

Gentle giants of Ningaloo

GARDEN LOVERS HEAD TO CANBERRA

The waters off the coast near Exmouth are one of the few places in the world where you can swim with whale sharks, and ALLAN BLACKBURN finds the experience was well worth the trip to Western Australia.

T

hese extraordinary animals are the biggest species of fish on our planet. They are true sharks in that their skeleton is made of cartilage rather than bones.

In some respects they resemble whales more than sharks – they are massive like whales and feed mainly on plankton and krill as do many whales.

Whale sharks can be up to around 15m long and weigh more than12 tonnes.

To swim with one of these giants can be a life-changing experience.

For years, it had been a dream of mine and I recently was able to tick this off my bucket list.

These creatures frequent the waters around Ningaloo Reef from about April to August, so you have to time your visit

accordingly. Several operators offer tours and all are based in Exmouth which is a long way from anywhere.

then the visitors get into the water and follow the guide’s directions to encounter the shark.

My first encounter started slowly as I could not see anything, then suddenly the shark was right in front of me. I uttered a mild expletive into my snorkel. They really are big!

The sharks swim effortlessly, their huge tail slowly waving, yet humans have trouble keeping up and then are left behind.

The boat picks you up and takes you to the front of the shark and you have a repeat encounter. This can happen many times provided the shark continues to cooperate and your energy is sufficient.

Very little is known about these docile monsters. Most of the sharks at Ningaloo are males and it is not known where they go to breed.

They have a distinctive pattern of white spots and stripes on a dark grey background with ridges along the body. Their underside is pale. They have large dorsal and pectoral fins.

Unlike many other sharks, the head of a whale shark is broad and square with a wide mouth a metre or more across.

The mouth can contain thousands of tiny teeth but these are not used for feeding.

Their diet consists of minute planktonic organisms which are

strained from the water through the gill slits by a fine mesh of gill rakers. They are completely harmless to humans.

On my second swim, I found myself directly in front of the shark with its massive head and gaping mouth coming straight for me. I barely made it out of the way and was so close I could have touched it – what a thrill!

Then its tail fin almost slapped me as it moved away.

For such a gigantic animal, it was truly majestic and graceful.

After three encounters with these magnificent creatures, I was exhausted. Other, younger adventurers enjoyed further swims.

The day was not over, however, as humpback whales then put on a show as well as dolphins, turtles and other sea dwellers.

In some parts of the world whale sharks are hunted for their flesh, liver oil and fins. In Australia, they are a protected species and a code of conduct governs encounters by boats and swimmers. This has given rise to a thriving eco-tourism industry.

The tours are not cheap, costing about $400 each. Then there is the cost of getting to Exmouth as well as accommodation.

However, it is a unique experience and one that few people get to enjoy – it’s only money, so why not do it!

The splendour of India’s Golden Triangle India is a country of enormous contrasts where poverty sits beside wealth, beauty intermingles with filth, and structure and chaos compete for supremacy, writes LEN RUTLEDGE. It will dazzle your senses and cause you heartache at the same time.

I

t can be challenging and charming, overwhelming and stunningly beautiful. The eager friendliness of the people is endearing, and the food is unforgettable but there is still likely to be unexpected glitches.

India is a large country and the one with the second largest population in the world. It really is many countries all

rolled into one. If you lay a map of India over a map of Europe, you will see that it covers the area from Scandinavia to North Africa and from Spain to Russia.

Like Australia, it is difficult to see the whole country in one visit.

That is why my wife and I restricted ourselves to a part of northwest India, known better as the Extended Golden

Triangle. There were many highlights.

Delhi, India’s capital, is dotted with mosques, forts, and monuments left over from the Mughal rulers that once occupied the city but there are also some more modern temples and other buildings. The contrast between rambling Old Delhi and well planned New Delhi is immense, and it’s interesting to spend time exploring both.

Udaipur, in Rajasthan, is sometimes called the most romantic city in India because of its famous lakes and palaces.

The City Palace complex, the architecturally splendid Bagore Ki Haveli, and Lake Pichola with its Lake Palace Hotel are just some of the must-see sights.

Jodhpur is famous for its blue buildings and for the unusual pants worn by a polo team when visiting England in 1897. The impregnable Mehrangarh Fort, which rises above the city, is one of the largest in India. Also here is the magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace, one of the last great palaces built in India.

The royal family of Jodhpur still occupies a section of it, but most has been converted into a luxury hotel. Nearby Mandore was the capital of the Marwar region before Jodhpur was founded.

Pushkar is a sleepy little holy town that attracts a lot of backpackers and hippie types and is one of the most visited pilgrimage places in India. Pushkar Camel Fair, Rajasthan’s most famous festival, is held here late October or early November depending on the moon and attracts 200,000 visitors from around the world.

India’s desert capital of Jaipur, known as the Pink City because of the pink walls and buildings of the old city, lures visitors with its stunning ancient palaces and forts. It is an excellent place to shop for gemstones, silver jewellery, bangles, clothes, blue pottery, and textiles.

Nearby Amber Fort is set on a hill top overlooking Maota Lake and is accessed on the back of elephants. It was the original home of Rajput royalty until

Qutb Minar in New Delhi.

Jaipur city was constructed. There are quite a few worthwhile places to visit in Agra and around, apart from India’s most famous monument, the Taj Mahal.

The many interesting remnants of the Mughal era will surprise you and the crazy, congested bazaars of the Old City will fascinate you. Don’t miss majestic Agra Fort, Mehtab Bagh known as the Moonlight Garden, and the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daula or Little Taj. Indian food is widely perceived as being predominantly vegetarian but in fact, less than half of the Indian population is vegetarian. As India improves economically, the consumption of meat is increasing and the variety of cuisines available has sky-rocketed.

The Golden Triangle region has accommodation ranging from $18,000 (no, this is not a misprint) to $2 a night.

Naturally the quality and experience varies widely. We generally used 3-star accommodation and were happy.

While the animals are often the main drawcard for a trip to Africa, the continent has so much more to offer.

NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro was right when he said city dwellers spending a weekend in a regional area was one of the simplest and most meaningful ways people in the city could support regional towns and cities.

“Even though we are in drought, our cafes are still brewing coffee, our shops are still open and we are still in business,” he said. “Our servos would love you driving by. Our cafes would love you to have brekkie with some locals. Our accommodation houses, our hotels would love to have you stay and I tell you this, you’ll get that country hospitality each and every time.”

Take that advice, and here’s a few simple tips: Plan ahead. All regions and main cities and towns have visitor centres online.

You might see a place you really want

Hills End NSW to visit such as a winery, a museum, an historic building or a homestead. It is best to contact them before you leave so that you know the visiting hours and which days it is open.

The worst thing you can do is turn up in a town at 4pm, check in to your accommodation, have a drive around and leave next morning.

Take some picnic and barbecue gear and a fold up table and chairs on your trip. And always take a billy! Oh, and some Aeroguard and plenty of water.

You can find amazing views, quiet river spots, and hidden places far from the madding crowd. Often there will be a barbie or two in such places, so you can brew up a coffee or throw on a steak and sit back and breathe in the fresh air.

Easy sailing to remote islands The Conflict Islands have shot to prominence as an exciting new cruise destination for Australians looking for a sea change, writes Dallas Sherringham.

A day in paradise at Kiriwina Island.

F

or decades, Aussie cruise fans have enjoyed the chance to go to favourite ports of call around the South Pacific such as Mystery Island and the Isle of Pines but for passengers looking for something new, the emergence of Papua New Guinea and in particular, the Trobriand group, is a dream come true.

In order to develop a new destination P&O had to find a unique place. Enter business guru Ian Gowrie Smith who happened to own the 21 islands and lagoon that make up the Conflict group, which is adjacent to the Trobriand group.

Apart from the occasional visit by a fishing boat, the coral reefs and waterways are much the same as they have been for a million years or so.

I recently cruised to the Trobriands

and Conflict Islands on P&O’s Pacific Aria out of Brisbane. The Conflict Islands were our final destination on the 15-day Coral Sea adventure, a stunning finale.

We approached the island group’s main lagoon on a sparkling tropical morning with the blue water given an extra dimension by the shimmering sand below. The picturesque group surrounds the central lagoon which features one of the world’s most biodiverse reef systems.

In the distance was Panasesa Island with rarely-visited beaches and shaded walkways that would soon be teeming with passengers going about the business of tropical escape.

We had visited Alatoa in Milne Bay, Wewak on the North West coast and volcano ravaged Rabaul on New Britain, but this was not paradise. They were a

glimpse into the quaint town life in New Guinea and a poignant reminder of the dark days of World War II. But we were now looking for untouched places, islands like Mystery Island where you could quite happily spend a year or two escaping the rat race.

Cruising south we sailed through the narrow opening of a collapsed volcanic caldera at Vitu Island which caused a 20m tsunami in the 19th century. The rainforest inside the flooded canyon was so close to the ship that you could almost reach out and touch it.

Then it was on to the Trobriands, a truly untouched world of beautiful tropical beaches, friendly locals and pristine reefs, where the weather averages 25C year-round.

First up was Kiriwina, largest of Trobriands and an island covered in fragile rainforest. Until P&O started cruising there a handful of years ago, Kiriwina had seen few tourists under its shady trees. Next was Kitava with its unique outriggers and children singing and dancing under the massive palm trees which have a serious side to it.

Our final day ashore was on the Conflict Islands’ cruise HQ. P&O Cruises Australia has six dedicated cruises to Papua New Guinea in
