few years ago, my son, who had moved into a share house with mates, decided it was a great idea to get himself a pet. He was keen on a big dog, but I ruled that out immediatley, pointing out that it would be forever.

He was planning to head overseas in a couple of years, what would happen to it then? Against my better judgment, it slipped from my lips, “but I guess if you got a cat at least I could look after it for you while you were away.�

Fateful words. The kitten duly arrived and we all oohed and aahed at its cuteness, while he justified it all by saying it had come from a refuge and we had given it a chance at life. He was merely doing his civic duty.

Naturally, it wasn’t long before he was off for a weekend and the kitten

arrived at my small apartment. Then they were having a party and it was no place for a cat; then he moved to a place where pets weren’t allowed.

There was a brief custody battle when I pointed out it was spending more time with me than with him, and then it was all over. The cat is now mine; the person who never wanted the responsibility of a pet.

It sheds hair all over my house and I wake up with hairballs. It lounges around all day and gets cranky when I try to push it off my bed. It is growing fat for lack of any real exercise.

And I’ve become extremely fond of it and enjoy her company. She doesn’t answer back or even listen for that matter. She does her own thing while I do mine and we rub along very well together. She adds a bit of life.

Angela Bensted this month investigates the value of companion pets, how they enter our lives and make them richer and although I hate to admit it, I have to agree. The inherited grey cat ticks all the boxes.

here’s a clipped pooch standing guard on a Brisbane verandah in the fading winter light.

Actually the dog is sitting down on the job, performing its security duties from a comfortable chair.

One ear cocked, head tilted, the dog appraises everyone approaching the gate with a knowing gaze, weighing the

chances of a pat, a scratch or possibly something to eat.

Only when she lets out a warning bark does the pup seem anything other than human.

Her doting owner, Dawn Laughton, has always been a dog person, her mantelpiece dotted with framed pictures of pets she has loved over the years.

When the last two died, the grief was too much.

“I just couldn’t do it again,” she says.

But then she met Chelsea.

The moodle (maltese crossed with a toy poodle) appeared one day at the house next door, inherited by the young family from a relative who’d relocated.

The family’s busy work and school

schedule didn’t leave much time for canine cuddles and the cunning Chelsea soon sniffed out Dawn as a more comfortable fit.

Regular visits became occasional sleepovers, followed by some extended stays and holidays away with Dawn.

Eventually the neighbours agreed to permanent adoption and today Chelsea is a fixture on Dawn’s lap.

Passersby, local workers and young mums with toddlers in strollers, stop to pat the pup and chat to Dawn.

Having crept into Dawn’s life by stealth, the dog is more than just a companion; she’s a canine introduction service, bringing a wide circle of people into the retiree’s otherwise quiet life.

Humans have been sharing their verandahs with animals since we learned to tame them and harness their skills for hunting and farming thousands of years ago, eventually making friends with our furry helpers.

Egyptians opened their doors to cats about 4000 years ago and our love affair with dogs stretches even further back.

Animal Health Alliance of Australia and with 63 per cent of households estimated to include one, Australia has one of the highest ownership rates in the world.

We love them so much we give them human names.

A recent review of Australian council records by The Guardian reveals Bella, Molly, Charlie, Max, Ruby and Jack as the top six dog monikers.

Dawn and Chelsea’s story is a typical one, with studies confirming pet ownership has many physical, psychological and social benefits, particularly for older people.

This is good news for the thousands of animals languishing in shelters across Australia.

Penny Brischke manages the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge at Tanawha, an animal shelter which saves and re-homes around 1000 animals a year.

She says retired people are particularly suited to adopting certain pets, especially animals which are old or have special needs.

“They want to give them a couple of good years of life and they’re happy to have their pets lying inside on the rug by the fire, eating beautiful food,” she says.

Others finally have the time to spend with an active dog.

“They’re the ones we see down at at the Esplanade walking their cattle dogs or their staffies,” Penny says.

“Or they get a little dog because they want to go travelling in their caravan and they want to be able to take their dog.”

Finding the right pet is about finding one that matches your lifestyle she says.

Adopters should consider how much exercise an animal needs, how long they are likely to live and ensure they aren’t over-extending themselves.

“That’s the beauty of coming out here,”

It’s an area where contracts and regulations appear to give way to common sense and a live-and-let-live spirit.

Mike’s village in Noosa Waters has introduced a no-pet policy, with exceptions made for residents who already own one.

But when a neighbour acquired a small dog and another resident mentioned it to management, they were told “I am aware of it but nobody has complained,” Mike says.

“Nobody wants to be the first to complain.”

And if anybody does “she’ll just toddle off to the doctor and get a certificate saying it’s a comfort pet. End of story.

Despite potential complications, pets can be a welcome distraction during retirement upheavals.

For Patricia and Brien Dunne, a puppy named Charlie has helped them through a bumpy transition, distracting them as they’ve sorted through a lifetime’s accumulated treasures and adjusted to a new suburban rhythm.

The couple had always owned a dog, but once they moved from the family home in Emu Park to be closer to family in Brisbane, Brien declared there’d be no more.

“I said ‘yes dear’ and then started googling to find out where I could get one,” Patricia says, explaining how she found Charlie, a maltese terrier shitsu cross.

It hasn’t been all smooth sailing.

In the early days, Charlie treated their living room like his own personal bathroom and tore holes in her favourite knee rug.

Patricia contacted the seller to give him back, declaring she was “too old for this”.

But Charlie’s scruffy face and loving nature won her over.

He even made friends with Brien.

And the puppy stayed.

The couple’s daughter Rosie says having a dog has improved life for both of her parents, especially as they cope with the early symptoms of Brien’s dementia.

“Having a dog has softened Dad,” she says “and it gives them something in the middle to talk about.”

Brien’s a bit unsteady on his feet and macular degeneration limits his activities.

Having Charlie keeps him on the move.

“I think he feels quite confident that when he’s got little Charlie on a lead he can walk,” Rosie says.

“And it gives him regular tasks to do that he’s done all his life, even if it’s just filling the water bowl.

Susan Dawson, a vet at Kedron’s Anvet clinic, says it’s hard to put a figure on how much pets cost.

“Dogs are a luxury item these days.

“In the past they’d just eat scraps from the table and if something went wrong we’d just shoot them, put them down,” she says.

At a minimum, owners should visit a clinic one a year and preventative treatments for fleas and worms might cost around $200.

But it’s the unforeseen costs that can mount up.

“At least once a week I have someone in the clinic that can’t afford to pay for their pet’s treatment,” Susan says.

Where finances or living arrangements are an obstacle, people can enjoy furry friends through fostering or volunteering at an animal refuge.

Susan warns though, that fostering is not for everybody.

“You have to be prepared to give them back,” she says, something the dog-loving vet finds difficult.

Her own home includes a rescued greyhound and a staffordshire terrier.

“Greyhounds make great pets,” she says. “They’re gentle and affectionate and don’t need much walking.”

For some people, cost, convenience and clean carpets rate a poor second compared to the joy of owning a pet.

Brien and Patricia’s dog Charlie is still just a pup, tearing around like a ragged paint streak through their beige brick retirement villa.

Patricia smiles when I ask if the pooch is completely house trained.

“Not yet,” she says, “but I love her anyway.”

Scammers turn to tax

T

he Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is urging Australians to hang up on and delete tax scams after more than $1 million was reported lost to scams already this year.

More than 300 people have reported losing money to tax scams in the first half of the year, compared with 400 people who reported losing money in the previous 12 months, with $1.6 million lost in total.

These incessant scams come in many guises but generally claim that you have underpaid your taxes and are required to repay the tax debt immediately or face frightening repercussions such as arrest.

“Tax scammers are particularly aggressive so many people feel pressured to pay quickly without questioning them,” ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard warned. “The most threatening scammers even say that police are on their way to arrest you but can be stopped if you pay immediately.”

The scams often use personal information found online to try and convince you they’re legitimate. They usually ask for payment for an “unpaid debt” via wire money transfer, credit card, direct debit cards or even iTunes cards.

The call looks like it comes from a local phone number but most use voice over internet protocol (VOIP) phone numbers to disguise the fact that they are calling from overseas.

The ATO said that while it made thousands of outbound calls to taxpayers a week, it would never cold-call about a debt, would never threaten jail or arrest, and certainly wouldn’t behave in an aggressive manner.

If you’re not sure, hang up and call the ATO back on 1800 008 540.

The ATO would never request payment of a tax debt via gift or pre-paid cards such as iTunes and Visa cards, nor would it ask for direct credit to be paid to a personal bank account.

Other scams using the busy tax time to slip under the radar include phishing emails, which aim to get your personal details.

These scammers tell you that you are owed money by the government but to collect it, you must first pay a small fee.

If you think you have provided your account details to a scammer, contact your bank or financial institution immediately.

THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is making it easier for consumers to check their goods are safe with the new Product Safety Australia website.

There were 670 recalls in Australia last financial year compared to 596 in the previous financial year.

“Consumers can easily check our Recalls information to ensure they don’t have any unsafe goods lying around in their homes or garages, and act quickly to remove potentially harmful products.

Consumers can report an unsafe product to the ACCC by completing a simple web form to help protect others from harm.

The new website also provides consumers with safety education, lists the products that are managed by mandatory safety standards and explains which specialist agencies have responsibility for products that aren’t managed by the ACCC. Visit productsafety.gov.au/recalls

BUYING medicines and medical devices online can pose a serious risk to health, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) warns.

The TGA is advising consumers to exercise extreme caution when purchasing medicines from unknown overseas Internet sites.

Products purchased over the internet may contain undisclosed and potentially harmful ingredients and may not meet the standards of quality, safety and efficacy as those approved by the TGA for supply in Australia.

The supply of such products is illegal but TGA investigations have found that a number of Australians may have bought products online.

It is working with the Australian Border Force to help stop future shipments entering Australia.

SUGARS DISGUISED AS FRUIT SNACK BARS A review of 224 snack bars has found some of the biggest brands are tricking consumers by depicting images of real fruit on the pack even though the products are loaded with added sugar and contain minimal fruit.

Consumer group Choice found the “fruit” ingredients in snack bars often owed more to chemistry than agriculture. Brands using healthy-sounding names such as Go Natural and All Natural, Aldi’s Hillcrest Chewy Strawberry & Yoghurt Muesli Bars and Kellogg’s K-Time Twists Raspberry and Apple, trick you into thinking it’s a healthier choice.

I’d heard of Playfitness, a local gym where Veterans go and figured, rightly as it happened, they catered for the weary, creaky and somewhat cranky.

I wanted to be able to get up off the floor without hanging on to something.

One year into training I went down with breast cancer. I kept up training as often as I could throughout a year of chemo. Now, a year on, I am back achieving personal bests. I work out alongside all people from all walks and all ages. We share one goal. To walk tall.

Then, at my last stop I threw caution to the wind and was spending the remainder of my holiday money. My first shock came when I was informed I had to pay a departure tax before checking in – $US29 thank you.

Second surprise: There was a charge of $US25 to check in non-carry on luggage. How could I be booked on a flight that required payment for checked in luggage when I had already flown six flights all with luggage allowance?

There was no warning given from my travel agent that I would need to budget $US54 to hand over at the final departure point. But then there was one last nasty surprise. They wanted to charge me for food. And no cash (not that I had any left).

Only credit cards for a $US7.50 burger.

If my travel agent had done her homework she should have been able to warn me of the departure tax, that this “reputable airline” would cost me the last of my holiday funds and I would need to take a cut lunch.

It was with interest that I read Dot Whittington’s piece about booking through a well known travel agent. I also booked a holiday through what I imagine was the same company and had also been told they only used reputable airlines.

After reading her story I checked my ticketing – argh! I had two 6.30am flights booked and hotels do not allow you to check in until the afternoon. Why was I

nce upon a time, when I was in my mid-teens and still wet behind the ears, I made my very first airline flight, and a memorable one it was.

I revelled in the thrill of looking down on Australia for the very first time, and what more could I want than the comfortable, roomy window seat in the dear old DC3 and the attention of the air hostesses who made this VUP (Very Unimportant Person) feel like a VIP? Now, airline travel is about as exciting as catching a bus and thanks to the security measures necessitated by the threat of terrorism, one has to succumb to a raft of do’s and don’ts.

Necessary though this is, it adds to the problems of the STML (Short-Term Memory Loss) club of which I am a long-term member.

Just one instance of how short term memory loss can strike at the most inconvenient time: On an airline journey not so long ago, I had to change planes. There was the

usual checking of all our carry-ons and I dutifully emptied all my pockets – or thought I did.

I was next required to take off my shoes and asked if I objected to being patted down.

“No worries” I told the patter-down; but as he went through the routine, he patted my left chest, and suddenly alert, barked “What’s that?”

Soothingly, I told him it was just my cardiac pacemaker, which I had already declared.

“It’s a bloody big pacemaker”, he said, and it was then I remembered that in case I became a bit peckish on the flight, I had salted away – wait for it – a couple of milk arrowroot biscuits.

They were in my shirt pocket, right above the pacemaker.

That patter-down no doubt enjoyed telling his workmates about the SOB (Silly Old Blogger) he had frisked, and my grandson had another entry for his “Good one Grandpa” collection.

Where there’s a Will there’s a way So, what do you know about William Shakespeare, asks DAVID PARMITER. Was he boring, written by somebody else or have you never heard of him?

T

his, about a bloke who contributed 37 plays, 154 pop songs (sonnets) and who built out of recycled timbers a theatre on London’s Southbank which he called The Globe.

A man who died on his 52nd birthday in his home town after binge drinking out with his mates.

He contributed more than 1000 words to the lexicon, which in time were included in the first dictionary of James Murray and are included today in the ever-evolving OED. So watch your language as you remember Will.

Now, many people think of him as a country bumpkin from Warwickshire.

Uneducated, so how could he have written all that stuff about Venice and Egypt and Illyria? And the histories of kings? And Romans, Greeks and fairies?

His dad was a glovemaker, and a town councillor. In 1569 he was elected mayor of Stratford-upon-Avon.

His son, William, was then five years old and they lived in a posh house in the town’s main street, Henley St. At the age of seven, Will went to the Edward VI Grammar School, one of the 160 new schools endowed by Henry VIII’s young son, the newly crowned King Edward.

At the age of nine, Will went up to Big School. There he was introduced to poetry, and in particular to the works of Ovid. This learning also grounded him in the new world of the classics. The world of history, tragedy and comedy.

He developed his love of language and literature; of sophistry and argument; of metaphor and simile; and of puns and dirty jokes.

By the age of 18, he had learned to cope with love, lust and family breakdown. He courted Anne Hathaway and made her pregnant so they had to arrange a hasty marriage. He wrote her a cheeky Sonnet (#145), and had to deal with the disgrace of his father’s fall from fortune and bankruptcy.

He solved all of these problems by running away to London and joining The Lord Chamberlain’s Men at James Burbage’s new “theatre” in Shoreditch outside the city walls north of London.

They became the biggest hit since Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales back in 1400.

London had seen bloody bull - and bear - baiting shows in the yards of the taverns; and the wandering players had come through with their Mystery Plays and magical stuff. But now we had plays starring Richard Burbage, Will Kemp and William Shakespeare.

Now I move into the murky waters of his authorship. His first play is said to be Titus Andronicus, written about 1589.

This is all Romans and Goths and blood on the floor and it’s live theatre.

His second play, written in about 1590, is a re-hash of a popular earlier history of Henry VI against Joan of Arc.

I challenge this as one of his because it has a cast of dozens and his theatre company only numbered about 12, of whom at least two were boys playing girls.

The first play that I consider Shakespeare’s own invention is Love’s Labour’s Lost. This is about unaffected carefree country life compared with the false and totally affected city-folk of London society which Dickens later so cruelly but accurately caricatured.

This play was presented at the court of Queen Elizabeth I to great acclaim. It also includes the role of Clown (Costard).

This convention was drawn from the Italian theatre of the Pierrot where the clown could make fun of the patron or monarch and get away with it. Others, such as Feste in Twelfth Night, made a feast of it and was rewarded with a statue in Stratford as a memorial.

So while students today may complain about having their noses rubbed in some “boring old fart” by people like me, they get the giggles ... and then they get reading.

After all, young Willy got a girl preggers when he was only 18. How cool was that? Or maybe not.

The Association of Residential Parks Queensland (ARPQ) has been formed by homeowners to support their rights in residential parks.

This includes assisting with matters of concern relating to the park operators.

ARPQ is state-wide and focused on providing correct information, advice, assistance and support when disputes arise between home owners and park operators.

As a committee of volunteers, ARPQ is passionate about giving homeowners in these parks a voice. This extends to researching legislation that covers all aspects of the industry and representing your interests to the legislators.

Anything associated with denigrating the rights and freedoms of older people in these parks concerns the organisation.

Rural Aid Australia with the Caloundra Power Boat Club has launched a community campaign across the Sunshine Coast to help western

Queensland farming families preserve the bulk of the breeders and young stock.

This time the drought has lasted so long that farmers are being forced to take their core breeders to the abattoir.

For those who have sold off stock, there may be no way back when the drought finally breaks as stock prices will soar and it will be an expensive business for those with any money in the bank.

PRIVATE HOSPITALS KEEP BUILDING The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has reported that in 2014–15, there were 1322 hospitals in Australia – 698 in public and 624 in the private sector.

In the five years to 2014–15, the number of public hospital beds increased by an average of 1.1 per cent each year to 60,300 and private hospital beds increased by an average of 2.9 per cent to almost 32,000.

Beds available for overnight hospitalisation, as opposed to day care, accounted for 63 per cent of the increase in public hospitals. For private hospitals, 96 per cent of the increase in beds was in hospitals providing overnight care.

In 2014–15, recurrent expenditure on public hospital services by hospitals, Local Hospital Networks and state and territory health authorities was about

$57 billion.Of that, the main types of services funded were admitted patient care (57 per cent), outpatient care (17 per cent), and emergency care (10 per cent).

There were more than 10 million hospitalisations overall, with the most common reason being dialysis for kidney disease (1.4 million), followed by cancer (1.1 million).

About 1 in 4 hospitalisations involved surgery, with 60 per cent of surgery occurring in private hospitals.

Cataract extractions were the most common surgeries performed (246,000).

Public hospitals admitted about 700,000 patients from elective surgery waiting lists, with 50 per cent admitted within 35 days of being placed on the list.

Join the battle against dementia

SEPTEMBER is Dementia Awareness Month, a time to encourage discussion about one of the biggest health issues facing Australians.

More than 353,800 Australians live with dementia and this is expected to reach 900,000 by 2050.

An initiative of Alzheimer’s Australia, Dementia Awareness Month aims to encourage Australians to become dementia-aware, have a better understanding of what it is like for a person to live with dementia, and ultimately be encouraged to create communities where people with dementia are supported to live a high quality of life with meaning, purpose and value.

This year’s theme is “You are not alone”.

Dementia is the greatest cause of disability in Australians aged 65 and over, so many people with dementia live alone or with an elderly partner at home and are at risk of getting lost, falling, or suffering other injuries.

Dementia is the umbrella term for a number of neurological conditions, of which the major symptom includes a global decline in brain function.

It is a condition that has been noted for hundreds of years although it was relatively rare before the 20th century as fewer people lived to old age.

It was not until the mid 1970s that dementia begun to be described as we know it today.

We now know it is a disease symptom and not a normal part of aging.

There are more than 100 diseases that may cause dementia, the most common being Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies.

PAIN IN THE BACK An estimated 3.7 million Australians had chronic back problems in 2014–15, according to a report by the Australian Institute for Health and Welfare (AIHW).

The report, Impacts of Chronic Back Problems, addresses an individual’s quality of life, as well as the impact on the community.

Chronic back problems are defined as long-term (six months or more) health conditions and include disc disorders such as a herniated disc or disc degeneration); sciatica and curvature of the spine; and pain not caused by another condition such as osteoporosis or osteoarthritis. People with chronic back problems are more likely to report a poorer quality of life than those in the general population, with similar rates for men and women.

People with back problems are around two times as likely to say they have poor health, high levels of psychological distress and severe bodily pain.

GOOD NEWS FOR DIABETES PATIENTS Up to 20,000 Australians living with Type 2 diabetes will find it easier and cheaper to manage their condition following the announcement of a $70 million subsidy for revolutionary medicines.

Federal health minister Sussan Ley has announced the new diabetes treatment Exenatide (Bydureon®) will be listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) from September 1.

It means patients will have to inject themselves only once a week, rather than twice a day, avoiding up to 13 injections per week. They will also save more than $1600 a year.

“As one of our most prominent chronic diseases, Type 2 diabetes is placing a significant cost on the nation’s health and finances at nearly $1 billion a year,” Ms Ley said.

“According to Diabetes Australia there were about 4000 amputations last year that could have avoided with better daily management of a patient’s condition. Our hospitals also saw over 900,000 diabetes-related admissions.”

PALEO RESEARCH CONTINUES Despite growing in popularity, the Paleo diet causes more negative side effects than traditional diets, Edith Cowan University research reveals.

The Australian-first study involved 39 healthy women, half eating a Paleo diet and the rest the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating (AGHE) diet, over a four-week period.

More than one in five women who ate the Paleo diet reported instances of diarrhoea, compared with none of the AGHE group. The Paleo group also reported higher rates of tiredness, and trouble sleeping.

Lead researcher Angela Genoni said work was now underway on a new project examining the long-term impact of following the Paleo diet, particularly on gut health.

“Removing entire food groups like dairy and grains from your diet is likely to impact overall health,” she said.

Old hall timbers are soaked with memories

A

local hall or as it was labelled, the School of Arts, began popping up in many small townships to further the cultural and social life of the community.

Such a hall was to provide social amenities and meet the cultural needs of the community with a library and reading room. These were the first public libraries.

Queensland’s first School of Arts opened in Brisbane in 1849 and on the Sunshine Coast, Mapleton’s hall recently marked 100 years.

Other centenary celebrations will be at the Glasshouse Mountains hall on September 10, the Yandina School of Arts in October and Cooloolabin Hall in January 2017.

Many towns on the Sunshine Coast built a school of arts – Woombye, Nambour, Eumundi, Coolum, Maroochy River, North Arm and Cooloolabin.

Not all have survived and some have changed their names.

The halls were built with funds from the community.

In Yandina, a ladies committee set about the task, going door to door asking for donations.

For more than 100 years, committees and volunteers have grappled with rates and insurance bills, painting, floor sanding, general maintenance, cleaning, grant applications and accounting.

Along with the high points there have been difficult times when the hat needed to be passed around members of the committee to make ends meet.

Halls have been, and will go on being, a focal point of the community. They form the fabric of the district’s cultural history.

Many have come and gone or moved on to their own premises. Groups included fruitgrowers and canegrowers, sporting and progress associations, patriotic rallies during wartime and the CWA. Churches held their first gatherings of the flock there and there were protest meetings and elections.

These old wooden buildings have

heritage value but the real value of heritage is in the memories of generations of residents.

Remember the school fancy dress balls, the flower shows, the dances, the debutante balls, the “wog” and “card” evenings, the wedding receptions, the Saturday night “talkies”?

We could go on remembering until the cows come home. Watch out for these centenary events. There will be a wealth of history on display. What are your precious memories?

And if the Queen decides to send out congratulatory messages we could reply to her that public halls have been loyal and have generally kept her photo on display since 1952 and that of her forebears before that!

Make it easy on yourself

Checklist to tune into a new world of viewing

Why do we make technology harder to learn and use than it should be, asks COLIN DUNKERLEY, the iPad Man.

T

here is a secret to making technology easy to use – when buying new technology why not set yourself up to succeed by, at the very least, buying the same brand devices?

It’s hard enough to learn about one product so why do so many people try to learn three? You possibly have a Microsoft Windows computer, an Apple iPad and an Android phone.

This means you have to learn three different operating systems; three different ways to do the same thing.

And don’t get me started on trying to make the three different platforms try to talk to each other.

Unfortunately, the Android platform is a fragmented mess because it is made by so many different brands and is running so many variations of the software, that even if you have the same brand of tablet and phone, the chances are high that you will still have to learn two different variations.

Most retailers and telcos don’t tell you about Android fragmentation and are still selling “new” Android products with software that is up to four years old and cannot be updated.

The reality is you can start making

technology easier by reducing the products needed to two.

With advancements in technology the reliance on the home computer is diminishing. More and more people are just using an iPad and iPhone to do everything they once did on a computer.

If you own an Apple iPad you already know how to use the Apple iPhone. If you own an iPhone you already know how to use the iPad. They both work off the same operating system and more importantly the same version of operating system so learning to use them is the same.

There is still learning to be done and always will be, but at least by having two products that behave the same way you give yourself a chance.

I also recommend making your iPads and iPhones easier to see by resisting the urge to put a busy photo in the background. Keep the background plain and then make your text bolder and larger so it’s easier to read.

Smart TV opens up a new world of viewing, writes NATHAN WELLINGTON

F

or about the same price as renting a DVD you can have thousands of movies and programs available through internet television for a month.

So, if you are ready with a bowl of popcorn and a comfy chair to settle in for the world of internet television, first check to see if your television is suitable.

It must be internet compatible. Most TVs made during the past three years are smart and connect wirelessly to the internet. Older ones will have an Ethernet cable connection at the back of the screen.

If it doesn’t have either of these, type the make and model of your TV into Mr Google and ask “Is my --- a smart TV?” and you will usually get the answer.

If your TV isn’t smart it may be time to go shopping. If it is smart, then you may need only to connect it to your modem. It is relatively straightforward, much like connecting your computer or tablet to your modem.

If you have a wired connection you will need to run an Ethernet cable from your modem to your TV, then go into your TV’s menu/setup and find the networking settings.

spring spectacle for any size garden is the New South Wales Waratah (Telopea speciosissima and other Telopea species).

This giant of a flower satisfies those who like to grow Aussie native plants but want the size, colour and dramatic effect of popular exotics.

It puts on a great show outdoors from August to November and the long-lasting

blooms are one of the best cut flowers ever to grace a vase.

Flowers come in various bright shades of red to cultivars of yellow and white.

Strangely, you don’t see many of these shrubs being grown in the home garden.

One reason is they are not a common stock item in garden centres so look for them in a specialist native plants nursery.

Given all this they will thrive for many years and reward you with spectacular flowers throughout spring.

Pruning is important for continued

good flowering and should be done once the last flower of the season has gone, usually in late November – early December.

In fact, if you are cutting most of the flowers for vase use then you will be doing all the pruning required and this will also keep the shrub to a manageable 2m or so in height.

The big waratah flower heads bring honeyeaters to the garden.

And here’s a tip – because this shrub, even when well-pruned, looks a bit straggly, plant it in the centre of a bed and put shorter, colourful plants all around it.

Tweaks keep this little beauty up to date There have been a few changes to the Mazda 3 but BRUCE McMAHON finds it remains a worthy consideration.

T

he compact Mazda 3 is one of Australia’s best-selling cars for good reason – it has been offering style and substance at decent prices for three generations.

Almost 40,000 Mazda 3s rolled out of showrooms here last year; around the world more than 10 times that were sold, accounting for one-third of the Japanese maker’s volume.

This third generation Mazda 3, launched in 2014, remains a good-looking car and decent to drive.

Now a mid-model refresh for 2016 has given the car a subtle polish-up in both the style and performance departments.

Mazda’s general manager of product Hitoshi Takeshita says the company’s “human-centred development philosophy” requires continuous improvements to the fleet.

So to move the Mazda 3 on, there has been small changes to front and rear styling to make the car look wider, lower and

more dignified up front.

There has been an instrument panel tidy-up, an electric park brake added and some more safety and convenience contrivances made available.

But no more CD player and no more diesel engine option.

With the advancement in petrol engine technology the loss of the diesel is not a great

concern in this segment but not sure if everyone is ecstatic about the loss of the CD player.

For many these remain convenient audio systems with better sound quality than other compressed music systems.

Anyway, the new season Mazda 3’s available with 2 litre or 2.5 litre petrol engine, six-speed manual or six-speed auto and six trim grades from

The other major, albeit also subtle, changes for 2016 are in the handling department where this updated Mazda arrives with computer-controlled G-Vectoring Control.

This GVC adjusts engine torque to front wheels in response to steering inputs and smooths out the each-way forces on the wheels.

As the steering is turned, GVC generates a minute deceleration force, loading up the front wheels to increase grip and responsiveness.

The result is sweeter steering, fewer steering wheel corrections needed (especially on rougher surfaces) and smoother turns into corners, although it needs a back-to-back comparison to best appreciate the difference.

On a closed circuit, with set speeds and a bunch of witch’s

hats to weave through, the new Mazda 3 is that tad nicer to steer than previous incarnations.

Many drivers may not appreciate these new-found nuances but, easy to say, the technology does make the car that little more enjoyable to pilot and that little safer to steer in everyday driving.

There’s a fair bit of competition in this part of the Australian car market, from the likes of Mazda’s own CX-3 and other SUVs let alone Hyundai’s i30 and the venerable Toyota Corolla.

But the Mazda 3 has held its ground well.

Style, road dynamics, five-star safety and accommodation plus, at the top end of the range, a most premium feel are all there.

These latest style and mechanical updates enhance the attractions of a very decent car with widespread appeal and, as with most Mazdas, there is its sporting bent.

I’m a septuagenarian, get me out of here A visit to friends on the Gold Coast turns into the trip from hell for RON McKENZIE who gasps, “Movie World, be damned!”

Upon returning to their home I decided to use the Public Holiday strategy. At every opportunity I pointed out that all attractions and theme parks would be subject to intense overcrowding on Queen’s Birthday.

While there seemed to be some discussion about the crowds the response was a little disappointing and when I retired for the night, Movie World was still on the next day’s agenda.

By the time I awoke Monday morning I had decided that it was eminently reasonable for me to refuse to attend on the grounds that it would be far too crowded and so I informed the 3 Ms (Millie, Marie and Mal) that I would stay

that it was a wonderful experience to see fruit trees and ride around on a small train and bring home a handful of macadamia nuts that were unbreakable.

I had asked Mal several questions about Movie World which resulted in vague responses about Batman and I feared the worst. Thus I retired that night with an uneasy feeling about tomorrow.

Tuesday arrived and was a little fresh and slightly overcast. I was genuinely desperate to avoid the anticipated agony that the day might bring.

I had several strategies in mind but deep down I had little hope of success.

Having avoided Fruit World I knew that the consequences of refusing to join the 3

recently returned from the Gold Coast and it is with some regret that I am forced to admit that I have crossed the line and there is no doubt whatsoever that I am now officially senile.

No sane septuagenarian would ever allow himself to end up in the predicament that somehow I managed to find myself in, in June.

Whether I was enticed, pussywhipped or brow-beaten is of little consequence. History will show that I ended up at Movie World!

We drove down to visit longstanding friends who, for the sake of anonymity, I will call Mal and Millie.

Mal and I first met 61 years ago at a schoolboy tennis tournament at Kooyong. Subsequently we shared a flat for many years and I was best man at his wedding.

My wife is a close friend of Millie and they spend many hours on the phone.

Mal has not been well for some time and Millie is incredibly diligent in doing whatever she can to bolster his spirits.

She is also extremely hospitable however, she has the totally misguided view that her guests will welcome her planned itinerary of activities.

I would never dare speak for my wife but by now you may well have realised that I am somewhat of a free spirit and Millie’s suggestions left me less than excited.

A yum cha lunch at Robina was the first item on the agenda and I had no issue with this although I was mildly distressed that Millie seemed to regard yum cha as something of an Olympic sprint. No sooner had we sat down than copious miscellaneous dishes began to appear.

My attempts to stem the flow of the different courses had little impact as my wife inevitably sides with the opposition.

The food was tasty but I had a major problem in adjusting to the seeming necessity to finish lunch in 20 minutes.

Perhaps my regular three-hour lunch each Friday with a couple of geriatric mates has made me less flexible.

Nevertheless yum cha was fine but dark clouds were gathering on the horizon.

Millie (whom I love dearly) often uses the “fait accompli” technique to achieve her own ends.

During lunch she mentioned a few times that “we will go” to Movie World tomorrow.

At this point I should stress that “docile acquiescence” is not a character trait that people regularly attribute to me, nor is it one that I crave.

While I may be a geriatric I still claim to have a mind like a steel trap and it was apparent that I needed to do something to avoid this pending disaster.

“I was generally desperate to avoid the agony that the day might bring” home and I hoped they had a lovely day.

Sadly, I did not allow for Millie’s flexibility and after clandestine discussions (of which I had no part) the decision was made to change Worlds that day. The plan was now to visit Fruit World today and go to Movie World tomorrow.

I immediately protested and explained that at my advanced age I could not cope with “world’” changing events at such short notice and I would stay and look after the dogs. Strangely enough I escaped severe censure at this point and the 3 Ms went off to look at fruit trees.

They arrived home and assured me

Ms once again would shatter the peace I crave.

I made a half-hearted suggestion that it “was not a nice day so why don’t we go and have a nice lunch”?

As expected this was ignored and thus I accepted the inevitable feeling that I was to go to Movie World.

We set off with Marie and Millie happily talking drivel while Mal remained silent and I wondered how I had allowed this to happen.

The car park was not particularly busy and I managed to indicate to Marie and Millie that yesterday would have been a disaster. We strolled to the entrance and I should acknowledge that from this point I was in grave danger of cardiac infarction.

The first trigger was when, after several reviews of the sign, I realised the entrance fee was $89.50.

I am quite naive in the current scale of charges for such attractions but Mal had

previously suggested that the cost was probably about $60 a head.

My blood pressure began to rise and continued to rapidly escalate as Millie and I waited in line to pay this exorbitant fee. It seemed that the people in front had some sort of VIP pass and 15 minutes later I had reached the position where I was asked to pay $189 for the privilege of entering a place where I had no desire to be!

My state of mind did not improve when I discovered that I had not transferred funds to my usual cheque account and had to pay by credit card for an additional $3.50!

As a man of great self control I walked silently along with the 3 Ms to an area which featured a contraption which took the occupants straight up and then straight down relatively quickly.

None of the 3 Ms who had been so keen to visit Movie World were at all interested in sampling this highlight.

We strolled down through the main street and my rapid analysis led me to conclude that this was an old, run-down establishment where I should not be.

There seemed to be nothing much going on so we ended up in an area where the crowd could overlook an asphalt quadrangle.

After 20 minutes of sitting and doing nothing, we watched a couple of cars come out, burn rubber and make a lot of noise. Next was a mildly entertaining 4D movie.

I am allergic to queues and waiting for 10 minutes to enter the theatre further escalated my blood pressure. Surely there was more to come?

Millie told us that there was a nice ride near the Batman cave. This turned out to be a moth-eaten dreadful excuse for something which could not possibly interest or even scare a three-year-old.

I found it hard to focus with my blood boiling and recognising that I had allowed myself to visit this dreadful place.

What I could be consuming and what wines I could be drinking at this point in time for my $90 flashed constantly through my mind.

The 3 Ms were not inclined to make comment because they also recognised that we had been taken for a ride. After an hour I demanded that we leave and have lunch outside and for once everyone agreed.

So I am issuing a warning – never ever, ever, under any circumstances, contemplate a trip to Movie World.

A pet subject Often when preparing a will, people will forget to make allowance for what should happen to their pets. EMMA NISBET explains.

id you know that the law recognises a pet as a “chattel” (or item) and therefore, a person can deal with the ownership of their pet in their will.

A good way to ensure that beloved animal members of the family are cared for in the event of your death is to provide for them in your will.

This might include ensuring sufficient money is available to provide for them, but more importantly, ensuring that there is a person or organisation who is prepared to take on the important duty of caring for your pet or finding them a loving home.

When providing for your pet in the will, there are a few options available: • Establish a trust for the care and maintenance of your pet.

This provides more certainty in ensuring the funds are actually used for the care of your pet.

It is important to obtain legal advice on the drafting of the trusts as the trust may fail if the terms are uncertain/

vague, including for example, failing to address what will happen to any surplus funds after the death of your pet.

• Leaving a pecuniary legacy in the will to a person and expressing a wish that the person uses the funds to look after your pet.

This is a non-binding gift. It is ultimately at the discretion of the recipient as to whether they use the funds to fulfill your request.

• Leaving a legacy to an animal charity, in exchange for the charity caring for, or rehousing your pet to a suitable home.

It is important to speak with the intended charity to ensure that they are able to provide or arrange for suitable care and accommodation. You will also need to consider what will happen in the event the charity is unable to care for, or rehouse your pet, at the time you die.

You can leave your money or property to an animal charity.

It is possible to leave a bequest (of property) or a pecuniary legacy (cash) to the care of animals generally provided the bequest is for charitable purposes.

Many animal charities advertise for such bequests in Queensland, and include suggested wording for bequest clauses in your will on their websites.

It is particularly important to use the correct form of words if you write your own will or use a purchased will kit.

It is better to have legal advice when making a bequest to a charity of any kind to ensure that it is practicable, and worded correctly.

’m going to come straight out and make a bold statement. Most of us have difficulty being honest. Now before you dismiss me and say I don’t know what I’m talking about, please hear me out.

I’m not saying people are liars or are deceitful, quite the contrary. Most people I meet are truly delightful.

I’m talking about something of which most of us are guilty. Gulp! Here goes.

We have difficulty admitting we’ve got too much stuff.

Now, some of you will nod in agreement and freely admit you do. Some of you will point your finger and say, “ah, yes my husband/wife does”.

There’s also a small portion who will fervently disagree with my statement.

The truth is we can make do with very little, if we want.

For most people the moment of truth comes when it’s time to move home.

Yep, after living in the same house for five, 10 or even 20 years, that’s when you realize what’s been lurking in your cupboards.

Actually, I wonder if some cupboards are breeding grounds for the weird and obscure.

Why is it then that when you pack up the house, you unveil things that haven’t seen the light of day for years?

Scarily enough, there will be some items you pluck from obscurity and have no idea what they even are.

The big question is, why keep stuff you don’t use?

There’s a myriad of responses to this question, and I reckon I’ve pretty much heard every reason.

These range from “I paid a lot of money for that”, “we bought that on holiday”, “I inherited it” to “it might come in handy one day”.

While these responses may be true, the defining question is: what do you really need?

Don’t get me wrong I’m not

“Focus on the end goal of living with less. Simply put, get rid of the excess and you’ll feel much better for it.”

• Are you procrastinating or delaying making a decision?

• Can you gift or bequeath it to someone who can use it?

The early town on top of the mountain bears little resemblance to the Buderim we know today.

I

t’s hard to imagine that Buderim, the prized property plateau 200m above the nearby sea, could be anything other than a superb place to live, but its first residents preferred its cedar in the 1870s.

By the turn of the century, its rich red volcanic soil was favoured for farming.

Coffee, (Ernest Burnett won a London trade fair award in 1899) bananas (Joseph Foote produced the Mons Mari in 1912) and ginger (the southern hemisphere’s only ginger factory) were the most famous crops.

Land values took over after World War II and, with the subdivision of new

estates capitalising on magnificent views from every angle, Buderim soon established itself as an enviable and somewhat upmarket place to live.

Many of the rich and famous chose it in retirement, Queensland Governor Sir John Lavarack (1885-1957) among them, so much so that for a time it was dubbed

“heaven’s waiting room” by mischievous locals.

This combination of rich soil and retirees also makes it the well-tended garden of the Sunshine Coast and a pretty place to live.

There was considerable residential development during the 1960s and it

FOCUS ON BUDERIM never really stopped. The population doubled between 1991 and 2006 as technology made it possible to build on steep slopes and housing began to flow down the escarpment.

Once just a network of residential streets spreading out from the main street which runs right along the top of the

mountain, it now officially includes North Buderim, Tyrone Heights, Kuluin and Kunda Park to the north and Timberdale and Mons to the west while its eastern and southern slopes have also been handed over to clusters of new suburbs.

A time when agriculture ruled

T

he earliest settlers on Buderim were involved in the timber industry.

With cleared land, sugar plantations followed. In the late 1800s Buderim had two sugar mills.

Ainslie Davies of Buderim Podiatry, says her great-grandfather, Ernest Burnett was the sugar boiler at the second mill.

Ernest’s brother John K Burnett was the manager at the mill.

The sugar industry hit hard times and both mills closed in 1893.

Many sugar growers switched to other crops, mainly citrus and bananas.

Joseph C.Dixon brought coffee plants to Buderim in 1872, a time when the sugar industry was flourishing and cane was still the principal crop.

In 1898, Mr G.A Reibe selected land on the northeast slopes of Buderim and planted coffee between clumps of bananas.

The crop thrived and at its peak was producing about 10 tons of coffee a year.

He then manufactured coffee with a machine constructed for the purpose.

Ernest Burnett grew bananas and coffee when the sugar mills were closed down.

In 1899, he sent a sample of coffee

Buderim Craft Cottage will present its annual Sculptured Garden exhibition from Saturday, October 8 to Sunday October 16.

Visitors will see a presentation of sculptures for both gardens and interiors, including ceramic wall art, and functional pottery designed around the theme of “Rhythms”.

The exhibition will showcase a plethora of styles, with participating artists integrating glass, metal and wood into their work.

Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be available both weekends in the covered courtyard overlooking the Memorial Hall and Craft Cottage gardens.

Visitors on the exhibition’s second weekend should also visit Buderim’s popular Spring Garden Festival at the Memorial Hall next door and at other Buderim venues.

The exhibition has been held annually since 1997 and is organised by the Potters Group of Buderim Craft Cottage, which is a not-for-profit community association.

Buderim is home to the Suncoast Christian Health Centre which was established in December 2008, as a small medical practice with a big dream.

Owners Shanti and Peter Herbert were acutely aware of the difficulties the public faced when needing medical attention at times that were not 9-5pm, Monday to Friday and with Buderim at the centre of a population hub, it was the perfect place to settle.

“People needing healthcare in the after-hours period, were stuck with going to hospital emergency departments, waiting for a home visit, or

sticking it out till Monday morning,” they said.

“Hospitals are not renowned for immediate service, as their job is to prioritise medical presentations, as you would expect. That meant that people with ailments that weren’t life-threatening could wait for literally hours to be seen by a doctor. Not everyone is happy with bringing strangers into their own homes either.”

The Herberts wanted to provide a health model that was accessible at all times, for primary care services.

The advantage of having an in-clinic acute care centre, means people can be seen by a GP at any time of the day or

night. There are minimal wait-times, and patients can also receive medication when pharmacies are closed.

Peter and Shanti are able to provide a high quality service by using the in-clinic concept.

“The advantage of working in a clinic-based environment is that the GP and registered nurses have access to all the usual diagnostic tools, at their fingertips, to maximise patient outcomes – ECG, spirometry, audiometry and skin surveillance to name a few,” they said.

A comprehensive range of medications can also be held in stock, due to the fact there are no space restraints.

When owner of Buderim Podiatry, Ainslie Davies was offered the opportunity to relocate her business to Box St Buderim, it had real significance.

The land has a close family link as it was the property of John Thomson from 1915 to 1920.

John brought his family to live

here to help his then wife’s failing health.

Their three children included Ainslie’s grandmother, Madge Thomson, who later became Madge Burnett, marrying one of the local Burnett boys.

The property was typical of farms in the area at the time, growing bananas and citrus.

The house was called Hawthorn, which is the same as the high hedge that bordered the property for many years.

The property was marked for redevelopment a few times and mounds of dirt that created an appearance like levee walls raised the level of the land.

The current medical centre in Lavarack St was built in 1992.

Big-hearted volunteers put their best foot forward

T

housands of volunteers from across Queensland will take part in the Heart Foundation’s annual Big Heart Appeal from September 1-14.

An army of more than 20,000 people will be doorknocking their neighbourhoods to help raise funds for important heart research.

Heart Foundation Queensland CEO, Stephen Vines, said the Big Heart Appeal was the only national public appeal by the charity and a highlight in its annual calendar.

“In Queensland over 90 per cent of the Heart Foundation’s funding comes from the donations of everyday people,” he said. “That’s why the Big Heart Appeal is so important to us.”

Heart disease is the single biggest killer of Australians and in Queensland claims the lives of 11 people each day.

New data released by the Heart Foundation in August has revealed regional Queenslanders are more likely than Brisbane dwellers to be admitted to hospital for heart-related conditions.

In fact, Queensland dominates the list of national hotspots with 12 regions included in the top 20 with highest

hospital admissions for heart-related conditions including heart attack, heart failure and angina.

“The recent data shows the challenge we have and the need to continue supporting research that will help with preventing, diagnosing and treating heart disease,” Mr Vines said.

The Heart Foundation is currently funding 18 research projects in Queensland and 200 researchers across the country.

Leaky gut explains a lot of problems Digestive issues have become a common occurrence but, writes TRUDI KITHER it can be successfully treated.

L

eaky Gut Syndrome is referred to as intestinal permeability. This involves damage or alterations to the lining of the bowel.

Because this means the bowel is more permeable, toxins, microbes and undigested food can leak through the gut wall.

These leaking substances can cause many problems in the rest of the body when they leak through the intestine and this is what leads to the symptoms that are associated with leaky gut syndrome.

Most people who have the syndrome don’t even realise it. The problem with diagnosis is that it is associated with many possible symptoms.

Most common symptoms of leaky gut are excessive flatulence, chronic abdominal pain, diarrhea, feeling bloated, heartburn, sleeping problems, chronic depression and fatigue, muscular pain and cramps.

You also may have skin problems, constant hunger, low tolerance for exercise, anal irritation or hemorrhoids, shortness of breath, swollen lymph glands, allergic reactions to food, liver dysfunction and recurrence of bladder infections The most common causes of

leaky gut syndrome are allergies, stress, parasitic infections, unbalanced diet, celiac disease, hypochlorydria (a condition that causes low production of stomach acid), excessive alcohol, reactions to pharmaceutical drugs, candidiasis (thrush) and dysbiosis involving microbial imbalances in the body.

There are quite a few things to do to treat the condition. These include: • Consume homemade Bone Broth daily – the bones, marrow and skin contain collagen and amino acids.

• Probiotics – one of the most common treatments as it is necessary to encourage the growth of good bacteria.

• Changes to the diet can help improve the symptoms. These can include reducing sugar intake, avoiding caffeine and alcohol and eating more whole foods instead of the processed kind.

• Glutamine repairs the lining of the intestine and reduces inflammation.

• Avoiding carbonated soft drinks.

• Stress management techniques to assist with relaxation.

CHICKEN BONE BROTH RECIPE This is a very old and simple (yet effective and tasty) healing recipe for the gastrointestinal tract which includes the stomach and the intestines.

A side note is that as collagen supports your connective tissue, it can help create glowing, supple, youthful-looking skin. Any type of marrow bones can be purchased but ensure that they are organic or at least grass-fed, free range. It doesn’t matter whether they are beef or chicken. This recipe is done with a whole chicken and can be kept in the fridge for 3-4 days or frozen and defrosted when needed. Bone broth can be consumed as it is (one glass or more daily, preferable gently warmed before drinking), or used as a base for soups, casseroles or any recipes that requires chicken or beef stock. A great idea if you are going to is to pour the stock into ice cube trays before freezing so that you can pop out the cubes when needed. Another handy tip is that bone broths are really easy in a slow cooker. Just put all the ingredients in and let cook throughout the day.

• 3 garlic cloves • 1 organic or grass-fed, free-range • 1 knob of ginger, sliced finely chicken (largest you can find) • 1 bunch fresh thyme and/or oregano • 1 onion, chopped • Pinch of Himalayan salt or good • 1 carrot, chopped quality sea salt • 3 celery sticks, chopped • Black peppercorns • 3 zucchinis, chopped • Enough water to cover chicken • 2 tblspns apple cider vinegar METHOD In a slow cooker or large stockpot place chicken and remainder of ingredients. If in Slow Cooker, put on low for eight hours. If in stockpot, bring to boil, then cover and gently simmer for at least six hours. Remove the chicken and allow to cool. When cooled the meat can be removed and used as shredded chicken for other meals. Keep the bones and return to the slow cooker or pot for a further 4-5 hours for a rich stock.

Allow the stock to cool, skim off the fat and discard.

(Handy tip: to skim fat off the top of liquid, put the liquid in the fridge until completely cooled. This way you can easily get a spoon and scoop off the solidified fat and discard quickly and easily. Stock will keep in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze.

Pops prepares a grand finale to the season

The Best of the Pops wraps up another grand and colourful year for Queensland’s most entertaining orchestra.

An alluring selection of music has been painstakingly chosen based on the generous applause and enthusiastic feedback from audiences over the many years the Pops has been performing at the QPAC concert hall.

Gregory Moore has earned his “best of” stripes, having been a member of the Pops family since his debut in the inaugural Scotland the Brave series in 1998.

An original member of the world-renowned The Ten Tenors, Greg has since toured internationally with the successful Scotland the Brave show and many other theatre productions, while closer to home he has wowed Pops audiences with a showreel of

songs from all corners of the globe. Sharing the limelight with Greg for this final in the “Best Of” series will be many of the musicians who make up the Pops Orchestra.

There will also be a special guest appearance by More Than Words, a corporate vocal group handpicked from the Queensland Show Choir.

Formed only last year, the ensemble sings a variety of genres and styles, from The Beatles to Buble.

ANNETTE Hill returned to piano lessons last year and is loving every minute of it.

“I love playing and singing the old songs from our era. It really cheers me up,” she says.

“Learning Piano means so much to me. It takes me away from everything else. I am really in my zone when I am playing.”

Her teacher is Heather Nel of Music Matters, at the The School Locker music studios in Maroochydore, who says there are many therapeutic benefits.

Using both hands keeps the brain active and it builds confidence as well as being fun and challenging.

The lesson book is the Alfred’s Adult Course, which has many songs from the era of retirees.

“And when my family and friends visit we have a good time singing the old songs,” Annette says.

“It is something that I can do just for myself. I find it very relaxing.”

She said she had kept her grandmother’s piano at home and decided to brush up on the piano lessons she had taken as a child.

“In your retirement you really stop using your brain and the piano fills that void,”

Annette says. “If I am at home feeling a bit lonely and sad I go and play my piano and it gives me a lift.”

Tall tales and true from the Mexican desert Horse riding in the wilds of southern Mexico rings of a frontier adventure even, as BRUCE McMAHON discovers, when you end up face down. ranch owner and guide Mary Jane Gagnier leading the way. She knows the district and, as a long-distance endurance rider, knows her horses.

So we ride up and over limestone ridges. There are cacti galore, a desert orchid here, ferns there, yucca and native cane.

There’s lantana and prickly acacia. It’s hot, maybe 40 degrees, and the hills overlooking the valley farmlands are wild country.

It’s just that after four hours in the saddle without drinking enough water, this gringo misses the (dis)mounting block and falls from the horse in unedifying fashion back at the ranch.

It’s not all about reliving the days of the Cisco Kid for Oaxaca – capital of Oaxaca, Mexico’s southernmost state – offers a tonne of other enchantments from ancient and colonial buildings to colourful arts, fine chocolates and fried grasshoppers. The top three most popular travel destinations for Australian residents in 2015-16 were New Zealand, Indonesia (including Bali), and the United States of America.

The same three countries were among the most popular travel destinations for Australians 10 years ago, along with the United Kingdom, Libby O’Toole from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Migration Analysis and Reporting Team said.

“Australians made 1.3 million shortterm trips across the Tasman to New Zealand last financial year, 452,300 more trips than we made 10 years ago,” she said.

“Short-term resident departures to Indonesia have increased more than five times over the last 10 years. At 1.2 million trips, this was the second most frequently visited country.”

The United States was third most popular in 2015-16, more than doubling

the 2005-06 figure with more than one million trips.

Rounding out the top 10 were the UK, Thailand, China, Singapore, Japan, Fiji and India.

A decade ago, the top 10 destinations were New Zealand, United States, UK, Thailand, China, Indonesia, Fiji, Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

In 2015-16, holidays made up 59 per cent of all journeys, and the average amount of time people spent outside Australia was 23 days.

Most international visitors come from New Zealand, with 1.3 million Kiwis taking short-term trips last financial year, over 246,400 more than 10 years ago.

Visitors from China followed as the second most popular source of travellers to Australia, with 1.2 million visitors.

This was almost four times the number that came to Australia in 2005-06.

Hats off to a grand cruise of Panama and the US

A small group tour to the US and Panama is a tick for the bucket list, writes Escape consultant VALERIE CLEMENS.

W

e were a very excited group as we set off from Brisbane airport together, anticipating the adventures to come on our Panama Canal and US trip.

Everyone in the group had their own reasons for joining this tour, so it made for great conversation as we all got to know each other.

After resting from the flight, we had a couple of days to explore the beautiful city of Miami.

We did an extensive city tour, having a Cuban coffee in Little Havana and admiring the graffiti art in the Wynwood area.

Our welcome dinner at the Southbeach area was delicious and a fun night.

We had three couples celebrating wedding anniversaries on the trip along with a couple of birthdays, so we had plenty to celebrate.

The next day was an everglades adventure where we got up close and personal with wild alligators and enjoyed an exhilarating airboat ride.

The two-week cruise from Miami to San Diego had plenty of variety.

We cruised the Caribbean past Cuba, Jamaica, and the Bahamas and visited several ports in Central America.

The wildlife such as the flamingos, toucans, macaws, and monkeys were a highlight, along with visiting coffee plantations, the fabulous old town in Guatemala and finding out how tequila is made at a family-run factory in Mexico.

The bucket list tick though, went to the journey through the Panama Canal.

The day prior to the transit we visited one of the locks on land to find out how they operate and to watch ships going through.

The day of the transit took all day passing through 3 locks and across the lake with jungles and small villages to admire on the way.

This was an incredible experience.

We ended with some time in San Diego to explore this lovely city. We were all pleasantly surprised at how it was clean, friendly and easy to explore.

he days might be over when you were richer in time than dollars and a backpack and a red-eye flight added up to a few more weeks on the road, but that doesn’t mean your travelling days are done.

The good part about being a matureage traveller is that you have more life experience to draw on to fully appreciate the experience.

When the thought of hauling out a sleeping bag at airports and railway stations has lost its appeal, it simply means finding a new way of doing things.

Just think, you can upgrade to a hostel or even a hotel, and there are plenty of websites to find a good deal.

Nevertheless, there can be not just physical limitations to work around, but also the idea that the planning can just get all too hard and it’s easier to stay at home.

But there are ways to avoid the pain.

When booking flights, avoid really early starts. They are stressful and tiring and can also be more expensive with airport taxi premiums.

The extra day waiting at an airport is no longer part of the adventure but represents the loss of a day in your itinerary.

Thieves and touts can see you as an easy target now that you are not running

as fast as you once did. Worse, you might find it easier to sling them a few dollars to avoid the hassle.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR THE MATURE AGE TRAVELLER:

• Travel insurance is now essential not optional. Like it or not, the risk of falling and a minor sickness turning into a major event has increased. Premiums rise after you turn 70, but even then, the cover is good security. Don’t forget to pack a first aid kit and medications.

• Be aware of personal security. Hotels are not always safe. Don’t hang out the “clean my room” sign which advertises your absence. The safe in the room doesn’t guarantee the security of passport and valuables, but it helps provided you work out how to use it.

Use the security chain on the door when you go to bed.

• Be careful of what you eat. If you are in a village which is a long way from the sea, don’t order seafood. In some places, it’s easier to turn vegetarian. If you’ve seen meat sitting in market stalls in the hot sun, you’ll get the idea. A change of diet can be enough to bring on the Delhi belly, but ordering a spicy vindaloo or a heaving serving of cheese or bratwurst is just asking for trouble. Also be wary of foods that might conflict with medications you are taking. Talk to your doctor before you leave if this is likely.

• Remember not to pack medications in checked luggage or leave them lying around your hotel room. Always allow

enough to keep you covered in the event of delays. Don’t carry loose pills.

This is a clear warning in countries such as Malaysia. All medications must be carried in the bottles or packets in which they were dispensed with the name of the patient on the label and must carry a description of the contents.

• Avoid wearing too much jewellery or having an expensive camera slung over your shoulder. It sends a message that you are worth robbing and is just something else you have to worry about protecting.

• Keep a minimum of cash in the purse or wallet you are carrying. Never open it up to reveal lots of dollars, especially in crowded markets.

• Sensible flat shoes that keep you balanced and comfortable will get you through a day’s touring without falling or hurting. There are plenty of good looking shoes that fit the bill and have been made with the older traveller in mind.

• Don’t miss out on the local experiences because you have locked yourself in your hotel room or been too afraid to venture off the beaten track. Often it’s easier to engage a local in conversation when you have a few years under your belt. Be cautious and enjoy.

Enjoy a day trip to the Victoria Barracks

A

heavy oak bar with a sword slung overhead, pressed metal ceilings and big old leather chairs … you can almost smell the port and cigars in the old officer’s mess at the Victoria Barracks on Petrie Terrace.

In fact, the whole complex scattered on the hill above the Roma St railway yards is a step back in time to what literally has all the principal characteristics of a 19th century British Empire military barracks, albeit on a small scale.

There is a central parade ground surrounded by a soldiers barracks, officer’s quarters, hospital and guard house as well as separate ordnance and transport compounds, together showing the military lifestyle of the 19th century.

Behind the historic stone wall off Petrie Terrace, on an elevated and strategically located site, there’s a whole new perspective of the city.

The story of the Victoria Barracks starts in 1864 after Queensland’s first governor, Sir George Bowen decided the colony should have a military force rather than police doing both jobs.

The state’s first military and convict barracks had been built in 1828, where the Treasury Casino now stands and the old stone walls went up in 1858, when

Part of the original officer’s quarters. there was a gaol in Petrie Tce. At the time, this part of Brisbane was known as Green Hills, a nod to its location and the views at the time. The Green Hills Barracks allowed the 100 Imperial troops views of the river to keep an eye on the wharves and government stores and also the growing settlement below.

Of the original buildings, a guard house, officers’ quarters and a main barracks building still survive.

The barracks were extended in 1866 and 1867 to provide a military hospital and a commanding officer’s residence.

When the next governor, Colonel Samuel Blackall, took over in 1868, he saw no point in having a military.

The barracks switched back to police from 1875-1885 and the police stables, which still exist, were built. They were elaborate, with the front door high

enough for police to be mounted and ready to ride off down the hill at a moment’s notice. It is said that in wet weather it is still possible to smell the horses in this elegant old building.

Then along came the third Governor, Lt-Colonel George French of the Royal Artillery (and also the architect of the Australian Defence Force) who urged the government to form a battery of permanent artillery.

He restored the military barracks and Queensland Defence Force in 1885 and a few years later it was re-named in honour of the Queen, Victoria.

The Police didn’t like being near the military so they moved up the hill to their own police barracks.

In the late 19th century the military hospital was also used as Queensland’s first Lunatic Reception House where mental patients were considered for institutionalisation at the Woogaroo Lunatic Asylum at Wacol.

During World War II, Victoria Barracks became the communication centre when the allied headquarters was moved from Melbourne in July 1942.

In all, the Victoria Barracks has 25 buildings dating from 1864-1967, the last being a rather ordinary typically ’60s model built for communications during

the Vietnam War. Most of the others are more elegant and are mainly brick with corrugated iron roofing.

If you plan to visit this part of history do it soon as these old buildings, 150 years of Queensland history, have been allowed to run down (not even a lick of paint) so that they are now at risk of being sold for development.

There are regular tours of the Victoria Barracks and parking is available on site or it’s a short walk from Roma St station via the Barracks shopping precinct.

The museum is operated by the army history unit and the Queensland Military Heritage Foundation.

From the eye catching front cover to the beginning of this story, it is a fast-paced, totally absorbing story, with a distinctive dialogue.

We meet Billy Graves, the detective in charge of the night shift team of the LAPD, and travel with them through the mayhem, murder and sometimes, sheer dullness of the shift.

We meet the families, retired DIs, a mortician and persons of interest along the way.

This is about revenge and human frailty. Mr Price is a master wordsmith and this thriller holds the reader’s attention to the end.

Having worked as an emergency physician all my life, we have a saying “nothing good happens on the streets after midnight”. The seedy underbelly of New York nightlife comes alive, or should I say dead, in this down and dirty cop yarn. The storyline is gut wrenchingly real and all the characters are disturbingly real.

Price’s writing style is not only very tight but also engaging.

Who would ever want to be an NYC cop? Reading this book I really worried about my daughter living in NYC. This book is not for the faint hearted. It is very entertaining for those who like this genre. Disturbing. Well written. 8/10

BOOK review JOHN KLEINSCHMIDT Billy Graves, once a member of a tight-knit group of gung-ho cops called the Wild Geese is now a Night Watch Police Officer in New York.

Five of the group remain, only Billy still in the force. All five have a “white”, a criminal who has committed a despicable crime but evaded punishment by beating them and the system.

The other Wild Geese take the law into their own hands and as this plays out, Billy and his family are stalked by another cop set on revenge.

Billy’s loyalty and relationship with his old partners is tested by his knowledge that they have unlawfully eliminated each other’s Whites.

Modern New York language aside, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

A New York City police detective is under siege – by an unsolved murder, his own dark past and by a violent stalker seeking revenge.

This American crime fiction novel is about Billy Graves who, in the mid-1990s, worked as part of an aggressive anti-crime unit known as the Wild Geese.

He accidentally shot a 10-yearold boy and now, in his early 40s, he is content to just get on with his job. Then a call changes everything.

I should first declare that this particular genre - crime/ thriller - is a particular favourite of mine.

And, when it is written with all of my specific boxes ticked – suspenseful, dark and gritty, vividly drawn characters and, most importantly, a high body count – then I am content.

This novel has a plot which is intense, detailed and filled with the distinctive patois of New York detectives.

It is a book noir and will transfer to the medium of film perfectly as I am sure it soon will. A great read for fellow aficionados.

MARY BARBER This is a well-crafted crime novel that breaks down the divisions that prescribe how we usually see crime.

These police are hurting, haunted by cases where the perpetrators got away. I admit, it did take me a few chapters to settle into it.

If you watch NYPD or similar shows you will be at an advantage. The story line moves along fast with a great cloud of doom hanging over the main players.

There are no extra words in this book.

The dialogue is punchy and the descriptions are vivid and original.

Can I call a crime novel poetic? There, I just did.

From the start this gung-ho style of writing depicted sordid accounts of incidents faced by NYPD police on any night.

The main character, Billy Graves, is the youngest of a group of seven policemen nicknamed “the wild geese” due to their penchant for unconventional modus operandi dealing with protagonists some years before. Due to the nature of the job, each of them had far-reaching memories of the ones that got away, that plagued their memories.

I usually love reading crime novels but this one was a struggle for me. There were so many characters, so many acronyms, so many names that often I lost track of the narrative.

For me it took a long time to arrive at crunch time and by then I was glad to be finished. Not one for me to recommend but enough encouragement for me to check out other titles by this author.
