T

he old saying goes that charity begins at home, but is it being taken too literally? How much is too much when it comes to the kids?

Do we bail them out of financial trouble, give them a helping hand, a cash surprise from time to time or just spoil them rotten?

Do we share what we have earned, giving them a fair cut of what we have or do we insist on making their own way in the world?

It is often said that Baby Boomers give too much to their children as they want them to have the things their parents couldn’t afford to give them.

I think that line is becoming a tad hackneyed and too readily trotted out by those making a case about the

Contents generation that has been perceived as having it all.

Lorraine Page this month investigates the biggest intergenerational wealth transfer in history as Boomers, who make up a quarter of the population but have more than half of the nation’s private wealth, head into their twilight years.

Not everyone is spending their children’s inheritance and living it up.

Some are already picking up the tab for a house deposit, a new car or an island holiday for the grandkids.

Others are providing board and lodging for the kids, and sometimes their kids too. But before accusatory fingers are pointed for not instilling self-reliance and financial responsibility, there are current house prices and university debts to consider. It’s a different world from the one our parents knew when they told the kids to get out and get a job.

Baby Boomer bankers As Baby Boomers retire, some may find themselves propping up the next generation with their hard-earned nest eggs, whether they like it or not, which just proves the old saying that blood is thicker than water, writes LORRAINE PAGE.

A

s Boomers hit their 70s, social researcher Mark McCrindle predicts we will witness the biggest intergenerational wealth transfer in history.

That’s because Boomers currently comprise 25 per cent of the population yet own 55 per cent of our nation’s private wealth.

Some are already feeling the pinch on retirement savings as relationship

breakdowns take a toll on their families.

Five years ago, 70-year-old Annette was a self-employed empty nester and working long hours when out of left field her household more than doubled in size.

Welcoming back their middle child was a no-brainer for her and husband Clive, although some adjustments had to be made.

“My daughter was in an abusive relationship and she decided to leave,”

Annette says. “It was a very quick thing.

To make space for her and her two young children we had to get rid of furniture, and that was very hard for my husband.”

She admits they were more fortunate than most families in the same situation as they live in a multi-level house and were only using the lower space to store furniture.

“You just adjust because it’s your child and they’re going through a very traumatic time, and for the grandchildren you want to make it as easy as possible so they can emotionally adjust,” she says. “I never even thought about how it was affecting me.”

Neither did the couple consider how long their home would be a place of refuge; instead adopting an attitude of support that would end when they knew their daughter had found her financial feet.

A study of more than 1700 Australians commissioned by finder.com. au in 2015 found that 86 per cent of parents provide financial help to their adult children, with lending money and cash handouts the most popular ways they contributed financially.

McCrindle Research has crunched the numbers again, revealing housing unaffordability as one likely culprit that will continue to drive that assistance.

Two years ago a house in Brisbane cost about 27 times more than it did in 1975, while average full-time earnings have risen only ten-fold in the same period.

The outlook for our next generations in finding affordable housing becomes even more critical when these figures are combined with Government findings that

reveal a disturbing trend in the labour market: one in 10 employees worked part-time four decades ago, now over a quarter of Australian workers work part-time.

Lorraine Pirihi, a Baby Boomer who mentors business owners over 50 through her website relaunchyourlife. com.au, challenges the notion that the majority of Boomers are travelling around Australia in a caravan spending their kids’ inheritance.

She says many Boomers have had

“Parents who are drip-feeding away the inheritance to their children because they haven’t set clear ground rules” failed business partnerships or made bad property investments and are struggling to find well-paid work that’s not on contract and for which they’re not overqualified.

“Bottom line they didn’t grow up with super. They don’t get huge payouts. I know for a fact many of the over 50s cannot find work,” Lorraine says.

She’s had clients whose children have come back home for various reasons, and attributes the high expectations of the younger generation, to parents who

overcompensate because they weren’t around for their children when they were growing up, and parents who can’t say no when asked for a handout, for creating a Peter Pan generation.

Which makes her scathing of parents who are drip-feeding away the inheritance to their children because they haven’t set clear ground rules.

“In my own era I just went to work at 15 and I didn’t know what university was,” Lorraine says.

“Everyone wants their kids to have a better life, but giving them a better life doesn’t mean you physically throw stuff at them. They don’t learn from that.”

Lorraine helped her own children when they were younger. She kept her son on her health insurance while he was a student and helped her daughter out with a house deposit.

Her son paid his own personal bills, including the food he ate, when he lived at home, and when the equity in her daughter’s house grew, the loan was repaid.

“You can bankroll a little, but it has to be paid back. You get nothing for nothing,” she warns.

Late 60s retiree Lillian says she and husband Mike have given their three children, now in their early 40s, “measured” support over the years.

They did their share of babysitting when the grandchildren came along and have continued to give in other ways.

Three years ago they helped their youngest pay for her divorce.

“She was finding it very hard as she has one child and her ex-husband was an alcoholic who’d lost his job and had no money,” Lillian says.

When her daughter’s family home was sold the money was paid back and Lillian and Mike used some of it to take the family, including their five

grandchildren, on a week-long holiday to the Gold Coast.

“Mike just wanted to, as he retired a few years ago with a good payout,” Lillian explains.

More recently they paid for a troublesome tree to be cut down for one of their other children as the neighbours were complaining.

“They normally don’t ask, we usually offer,” she says. “If they do ask for money, they will borrow and pay it back. They’re always very grateful for what we do. I suppose we just love and trust each other.

I thank God every day for my kids.”

Self-employed, now retired Lena, 72, admits to dipping into her superannuation three years ago to the tune of $30,000 to landscape her daughters’ new home.

“I have been over-generous but I’ve done it because I haven’t got anybody else but my (two) girls, and they are important to me,” she says.

A considerable amount of asbestos contaminated soil had to be removed from the old garden and Lena knew her daughters wanted the landscaping done and wouldn’t dream of asking for help.

How her father treated her financially has in turn influenced how she has supported her own children.

Growing up, Lena and her two siblings didn’t go without. Her father, who she says was not generally known as a generous man, gave her £100 in shares when she was 12 and £1000 for her 21st birthday, which she used as a deposit on a house.

Previously a farmer, shares became her father’s business after he was bedridden with tuberculosis for four years. He passed that knowledge on to Lena who says she’s made quite a bit of money over the years playing the share market.

She gave both her daughters 10 per cent of the deposit on houses they bought in the early 1990s. Last year she took them all on holiday to Hawaii as a thank-you for a previous time when she’d been unable to help them out financially.

Asked if she has imbued a sense of financial responsibility and gratitude in her children despite her generosity, Lena says she has because each has studied hard at different times in difficult circumstances to further their careers.

“The girls call the garden ‘Mum’s garden’, which is lovely. They never refer to it as their garden,” she says.

When her household dynamics changed Annette confesses to erring on the side of generous, and only expected some kind of financial contribution when her daughter stabilised emotionally.

“We never kept records anyway,” she adds. “I think she realises her financial responsibilities and she’s gradually taken them on.

“It’s a gradual weaning process, so that when we know that she can go out and pay rent and support herself, that’s the point when we say go for it.”

One of the upsides of that support has been the deeper relationships that Annette says she has forged with her daughter and grandchildren that might otherwise not have happened as her ex son-in-law was controlling.

When children have returned and are living less harmoniously with their parents under one roof, Lorraine Pirihi says there are plenty of free professional resources available to help manage that situation.

“If you can fix it financially you’re doing well, but emotionally it’s a different story,” she says. “It’s about setting boundaries and learning to say no, because don’t forget, everyone’s an adult now, but you’re the parent.”

Grey Medallion a (free) life saving course Older Australians are in the highest drowning risk category and are also often in charge of grandchildren, making it essential to know what to do in an emergency.

And that’s where the Grey Medallion comes in.

The Royal Life Saving Society program designed specifically for the 50+ age group is a free two-day course teaching skills that could save family members, friends or even your own life.

“Many people think that the Grey Medallion is a swimming course. Wrong. You don’t have to swim, or even be fit or able to swim to complete it,” says trainer Patricia Barry.

The course covers CPR, basic first aid, use of a defibrillator, how to act in emergency situations on land or around the water and water safety skills.

Dry rescue skills show how to help in an aquatic emergency without getting into the water.

“We are all prone to accidents, so the course covers some basic first aid, stroke

recognition, how to deal with marine stings and emergency procedures,” Patricia said.

“Many older Australians are also carers for their grandchildren, so we include a section on water familiarisation.”

The course is being run by the Ithaca Caloundra City Life Saving Club during Seniors Week at BreakFree Resort, Caloundra, 9am-4pm on August 26 and 27.

“We are thrilled that the Council on the Ageing has funded this course,” she said.

“Most people think that young children are the ones who are most at risk from drowning.

Sadly, it’s the over 50s who are the highest-risk demographic.

“Nearly 40 per cent of those who drowned last year were in this age group. This course aims to teach people how to be emergency-aware and what they can do to help in an emergency.”

When the Ithaca Caloundra City Life Saving Club ran the course last year it filled quickly.

As places are again limited, pre-enrolment is essential.

“We’d encourage anyone over 50 to enrol. It is run by fully accredited RLSS Grey Medallion trainers, first aid trainers, and lifesavers,” Patricia said.

FORUM PROVIDES CHANCE TO MEET AGED CARE MINISTER THE over 50s can have their say directly into the ear of Federal Aged Care Minister Ken Wyatt next month, when he visits the Sunshine Coast for the Fairfax Seniors’ Forum.

Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien said the forum would bring together seniors from all walks of life to discuss the issues that matter to them.

“This is a unique opportunity for our older population to have their concerns heard directly by the Aged Care Minister,” he said. “He is responsible for policy decisions that directly impact seniors so if you have any matters you believe should be on the federal government’s agenda then I encourage you to come along and speak up.”

The forum will be on Friday, August 4, at Living Choice Twin Waters Retirement Village from 1pm to 3.15pm.

“I would like the forum to make a positive difference to the lives of seniors who have given so much to this country.

We need your input,” Mr O’Brien said.

Fairfax Seniors’ Advisory Committee chairman Carol Cashman said the

workshop would focus on health issues which had been ranked as a priority by Sunshine Coast seniors.

She said anyone could attend and participants would be divided into tables of about 10 for the discussions.

Topics will include the lack of subsidies for natural medicine, rising costs and restricted cover of private health insurance, a range of issues relating to GPs, funding of palliative care and mental health, and services for independent living.

Ms Cashman said the over-50s community could make a real difference by getting involved. “People can also raise other issues. This is certainly a great opportunity to have the Minister here listening to your concerns,” she said.

“Seniors on the Sunshine Coast enjoy life and enjoy being healthy. We have a very active community of seniors and an active seniors committee.”

HEAD WEST FOR SENIORS WEEK KENILWORTH has a diverse and interesting ranges of events coming up again this year for Seniors Week, August 19-27.

Last year’s events over five days attracted more than 140 visitors, both local and further afield and ranged from tai-chi for arthritis, colouring and knitting to line dancing and a singalong.

“It is as if a united Kenilworth has been reborn, with people from all walks of life from in and around the town and the coast joining in and having a lot of fun together,” Kenilworth Seniors Week co-ordinator Yvonne James said.

As well as many of last year’s events returning by popular demand, special

guests will include Antarctic explorer Syd Kirby, Nepal village worker Dee Dunham and author Jo Kadlecek. There will also be stretching exercises, a games and puzzles session and an ecumenical church service.

Other possibilities being investigated include nutrition and Gubbi Gubbi yarning.

Opening night will be Saturday, August 19, at the Gheerulla Hall with an evening of ‘60s music and dance with five-piece band, the Strangest Dreamers starring former mayor Bob Abbot on harmonica.

Collector manages to have the last word Peter Bowler is a collector and within his impressive hoard, writes ANGELA BENSTED, is his own book of weird and wonderful words that has sold more than a million hard cover copies around the world since 1979.

Nestled between book shelves and a display case housing a parliament of owls, the glittering coffin seems out of place in his sprawling home.

That is, until Peter opens it to reveal a pile of music CDs stacked neatly on its shelves.

Peter and his wife Diane are incurable collectors with books, music, antique gramophones and other precious finds from second-hand stores jostling for space on walls and shelves.

At 83, Peter was surprised to hear from his American publisher six months ago that his most famous collection, a trio of books about language, had been republished as an omnibus edition with The Superior Person’s Complete Book of Words, The Superior Person’s Second Book of Weird and Wondrous Words and The Superior Person’s Third Book of

Well-Bred Words. He spent six months in the 1970s trawling through dictionaries for gems, then crafted witty ways to use them in modern conversation.

He was drawn to words he had never heard of, particularly scientific words, which might be used in unexpected and often funny ways.

“Originally, I was thinking about a couple of words which were interesting, just a little bit unusual and carried this little extra layer of meaning,” he says.

“I wondered, if I was writing a dictionary how would I define these. It got me thinking, there are a lot of words I could find like this.”

Words like “helminthology”, for example, he describes as “the study of parasitic worms. Some universities give courses in this and call it Political Science”.

With his eye for the unusual, esoteric, arcane and archaic, and a bent for collecting, writing “books about funny words” seems an obvious

pastime for a retired education specialist. His first book was published in Melbourne in 1979 and was an instant hit.

Then along came American publisher David Godine in 1983.

He bought the rights and found a receptive market in the US; although it never did make Peter his fortune.

Rather, he had a 40-year career in education policy. It meant he travelled a lot so he would pack a dictionary in his case and read it, page by page, hunting for words to include.

Peter was a reluctant media star, a bit bemused by the interest in his off-beat book.

But he talks enthusiastically about his 10 years as a literary critic for the Canberra Times, a part-time pursuit he took up after leaving his Government post. He says he’d knock on the editor’s door and ask what he had to review, grabbing a book from a pile on the desk to take home and read.

“I enjoyed that immensely,” Peter says. “It’s the one thing I feel I did really well.”

Today, writing continues to fill the nooks and crannies of his days, with a memoir and a novel he’s calling The Decline and Fall of Us, vying for attention.

He says his novel, which he doubts will see the light of day, is “a serious attack on modernism – overpaid managers, computer experts who’ve got us all by the throat”.

It was inspired in part by the constant push by banks and government departments to put all of their processes online, despite many older Australians not owning a computer.

But the lexicographer isn’t getting rich through royalty cheques and doubts he’ll earn enough from the latest omnibus publication to buy the matching sarcophagus for his living room.

“I’ll be long gone,” the collector says. “Such a pity. It would be nice to have the two.”

I

t may be hard to believe, but the Pommie bar stewards did not invent the potato. They were introduced from the Caribbean in the 16th century by Elizabethan buccaneers such as Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh.

They came along with other noxious substances such as coffee and tobacco.

Remember Bob Newhart, that clever American comedian in the ‘60s?

Because I read it all on the wall of a Metro train station on the northern line in Paris.

It remained a lowly cattle feed until the 18th century when an ingenious army medical officer and pharmacist saved the army of Louis XVI from complete annihilation through starvation during the Seven Years War. The pharmacist’s name was AntoineAugustine Parmentier (1737-1813). He recognised that to resolve the problem of a famine endemic among the forces of Louis XVI he would need to feed potatoes to the troops to supplement their meagre ration of meat and bad bread.

But how to get the men to eat this dirty soiled “cattle feed”?

I shall translate and précis the Metro walls for your enlightenment.

“He quickly realised that to overcome the reticence of the French people to eat the pommes de terre (“earth apples” or potatoes) he would need to encourage the posh nobility to become the trend-setters.

He persuaded Louis to put guards around the market gardens of Sablons, near Paris, during the day. This aroused the curiosity of the masses. What was so special about the plants with the purple flowers?

“The crowning achievement in 1785 was a special Court Dinner staged for the King and Queen, at which were served several dishes of different forms of cooked potatoes.

Marie Antoinette herself wore a corsage of purple potato flowers. It quickly became the fashion at Court.

“Throughout the Empire the potato became the staple food of those in high society and of the French armies, thanks to Dr Antoine-Augustine Parmentier, army pharmacist extraordinaire. For his services to the army and to the people of

France, he was presented to the King and Queen in the gardens at the Palace of Versailles.”

So never mind the fictional “let them eat cake”; the truth of what Marie Antoinette might have said was “Let us all eat our potatoes”.

David Parmiter does not claim relationship to Dr Parmentier as he comes from a line of Huguenot refugees who had fled France for England a century earlier. He spent two years at a French primary school before completing his education at an English boys’ boarding school, “where every meal was served with watery, lumpy mash”. It gave him a lasting distate for potatoes.

For the love of a good dog-eared book The older I get, the more I enjoy my own company, writes KATE CALLAHAN. Gone are the days when being alone was called loneliness and existence had to be justified by non-stop activity. It’s easy to while away the hours reliving the joys of a tattered old book.

T

hree months into my latest stint of retirement – yes, this is my second go at it – I’ve become an advocate for a more relaxed way of life, one in which tomorrow offers the opportunity to do whatever doesn’t get done today.

And so it happened the other afternoon, prompted by the sudden loss of yet another contemporary and feeling rather wistful, that I abandoned the usual domestic chores and sat down to sort through my book collection – as you do.

I’ve made a promise to my kids that when I shed my mortal coil, there won’t be a mess left behind. My possessions will be in some semblance of order and I’ll cull the unnecessary here and now.

As I sat on the floor in front of the bookcase, surveying the task ahead with an empty carton for discarded volumes by my side, it occurred to me that I’m not so much a reader as a lover of books.

I love their fragile yellowed pages, their sweet mustiness, and their heartfelt inscriptions. “To my little sweetheart for Christmas 1961” wrote my dear departed uncle in my treasury of nursery rhymes.

I haven’t been anyone’s “little sweetheart” for such a long time and, as I

leafed through this fragile old book, it was good to be reminded that I had been.

I took from the shelf a set of Queensland School Readers, reprints that I’d bought years ago. As some of you may know, the Readers were first used in schools in 1915 and, in various iterations, were used for the next 60 years.

At the beginning of the school year, pupils from Grade One to Grade Seven in my day were issued with a Reader. We all hoped to get a brand new one, but they were usually dog-eared from many years of use by pupils past.

The Readers were marvellously instructive little books that were, for many Queensland children, their first exposure to English literature; British,

Australian and Queensland history; traditional fairy tales; and Greek and Roman mythology.

Leafing through the pages of one volume on this winter afternoon, I felt a tingle when I came across an old favourite, the “Story of Atalanta”; a blonde version of Wonder Woman, fleet of foot, incredibly athletic and, of course, beautiful. For a girl in the early 1960s, what was not to love about Atalanta?

She was an ace on the running track, such that no bloke could beat her. And this is where it gets interesting. She said, silly girl, that she’d only marry a man who could beat her in a race. Many tried but failed, with nasty consequences, until Hippomenes came along with a bag of golden apples, a gift from Aphrodite.

He threw the apples behind him as he ran and Atalanta could not help but stop and pick them up. It goes to show there really is more than one way to skin a cat.

The afternoon was wearing on, but at this point in the book culling exercise I was really starting to enjoy myself.

Taking another Queensland Reader off the shelf, I found “The Stone in the Road”, a morality tale that has stuck with

me. A wise king wants to teach his people to be industrious and self-reliant, so one night he puts a large stone in the middle of the road in front of his palace.

In the morning, a farmer comes along, drives his wagon around the stone, and curses the useless people for leaving it there. Next is a self-important young soldier, who trips over the stone and storms off in anger. And so, the day passes, with every passer-by complaining about the stone but doing nothing about it. At nightfall, the miller’s daughter comes along and removes the stone from the road. As a reward for her diligence, finds a box of gold hidden underneath.

The moral is that hard work is not necessarily its own reward.

By now kitchen duties were calling me. As I put the empty cardboard box back, I thought of my five-year old grandson who started school this year.

Not for him the enduring pleasures of the Queensland Readers. They are so “last century”, it seems. No, he must have an iPad to do his reading homework.

But somehow, I can’t see him in 50 years’ time spending a leisurely hour or two browsing through his iPad collection.

Chambers brothers make a brave new start Brothers Thomas and Charles Chambers were among the earliest timber-getters to arrive on what was to be called the Sunshine Coast, writes AUDIENNE BLYTH.

A

family story about the arrival of the Chambers brothers in 1863 is that they stowed away on the Paddle Steamer Gneering in Brisbane bound for Mooloolah Heads (Mooloolaba).

Charles was 16 and Thomas was 15.

The boys were found out and returned to their father. To their surprise, he said he was quite happy for them to begin their careers in the timber industry because he knew the timber-getters, James Low and William Grigor who, with

William Pettigrew, also owned the Paddle Steamer Gneering.

Low and Grigor would often stay at their family’s inn, the Sawyer’s Arms in Brisbane. In fact, the inn was a popular meeting place for timber-getters.

Timber-getting on the Maroochy River had begun only in 1861. The Mooloolah River bar was easier and safer to cross than the Maroochy River bar.

The Maroochy district had the better timber.

Many of the first timber-getters on the Maroochy River had previously worked for William Pettigrew at Moggill.

With the passing of the Unoccupied Lands Act in 1860, they were able to move into the district seeking the forests of cedar, beech and pine.

Some worked upstream on the Maroochy River felling the trees; others specialised in rafting down the logs.

Charles Chambers and his wife Ann, her brother Peter McMahon and others, all lived in slab huts near Chambers Island where the logs arrived after being rafted downstream.

A chain across the river at Chambers Island stopped the logs and they were hauled out of the water.

Bullocks then snigged the logs five kilometres overland to the Mooloolah River where they were assembled on to a punt and taken out to the Gneering, which was equipped with a powerful steam winch for loading.

The Gneering was the great workhorse of the early timber industry for almost 30 years. It carried logs and later sawn timber to Brisbane and returned with provisions – flour, sugar, tea and whisky for the timber-getters.

For 50 years from 1861, logs were rafted down the Maroochy River until the closure of the Maroochydore Sawmill in 1903. By then, logs could be more easily transported to Brisbane sawmills by rail.

Both Charles and Thomas became well known for their skill at timbergetting and working with bullock teams.

When not working in timber they delivered goods. Charles delivered the boiler for Dixon’s sugar mill at Buderim.

Both married and lived out their lives on the Sunshine Coast.

In 1865, 18-year-old Charles Chambers married Irish immigrant Anne McMahon who was 21.

Their 10 children were: Mary Ann (1866), Thomas (1868), Catherine (1869), Charles (1871), Jane (1873), Margaret

Thomas and Elizabeth Chambers at their home at North Arm. It was said that Elizabeth worked beside her husband, helping him to cut down trees and haul the logs on bullock wagons as they pioneered the timber industry.

(1875), Alice (1877), James (1877), John (1880) and William (1881).

Four of the children – Thomas, Margaret, James and John – died in infancy.

Charles selected land along what is now Bradman Ave at Maroochydore, opposite Chambers Island and also selected 160 acres at North Arm. He and his wife relocated to a property on the Eumundi-Kenilworth Rd which remained in the family for many years. Many of their descendants still live on the Sunshine Coast.

Thomas Chambers and his wife, Elizabeth, had no children. It was said that she worked beside her husband cutting and hauling timber.

Thomas selected 140 acres in North Arm on the North Maroochy River.

Ninderry Rd crossed the river there and the name Chambers Crossing was coined.

A new bridge opened in 1996 and is named Chambers Crossing Bridge.

What would you do if I sang out of tune?

A relationship is any connection that you have with another. It could be a partner, relative or friend, but sometimes, writes PAULINE DU RIETZ, that connection causes concern because it goes ‘out of tune’,

I

often laugh. Well, to tell the truth, I quietly scoff, when I hear statements about falling in love at first sight. I hear myself muttering, “that’s lust, not love!”

There are many definitions of love, but perhaps one of the best comes from a book entitled The Art of Loving by the psychotherapist Erich Fromm.

I first read his work in the late 1960s. He states that love is the active concern for the life, growth and wellbeing of another. In other words, love is not just a feeling like lust, but behaviours that support the connection between those who care for each other.

This means that you can care for, even love, someone who doesn’t care for you.

In the early days of loving, people demonstrate kindness, consideration, acceptance and respect. They see the lovely qualities and characteristics that the other person displays.

We often describe this

process as the “rosy glow” or looking at life through rosecoloured glasses. In psychological language, we call this process limerence, which means, we pick up on the characteristics that we like and rarely recognize the faults.

As we move through our relationship with another person we often complain that the person has changed.

Sometimes change happens, but sometimes we have missed reading the characteristics or even negotiating the characteristics that may have a bad effect on us.

There are many great things in culture, but we fail to teach effective relationship skills and values. The values that we need to sustain effective relationships include: care and kindness, acceptance, respect, compassion and forgiveness.

The three main relationship skills are: effective communication, dealing with conflict and being capable of

negotiating to have your reasonable needs met.

Being able to open your mouth and make a noise is not effective communication.

Being competitive or always compromising, avoiding situations or constantly people-pleasing, is not effective conflict management. Effective interpersonal negotiation skills mean that the parties can move towards an outcome, even if there are differences. These differences need to be accepted and respected.

While writing this, I can hear the radio in the background. The broadcaster is commenting that this year marks the 50th anniversary of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. They then played the song, With a little help from my friends. I listened to the words and noted some: “What would you do if I sang out of tune, would you stand up and walk out on me?”

Love, both the feelings and

the behaviours, is an important aspect of our culture. One of the ways we obtain our sense of being OK comes from our assessment of the love, that is, the active concern, that comes from others to us.

In love relationships with a partner, your children, or friends, change happens. People change for all sorts of reasons.

The reasons might include physical, emotional or psychological changes.

People sometimes sing out of tune. In fact, there are times that they might consider that we are the party singing out of tune.

The truth is, we all sing out of tune on occasions.

How does one sing out of tune in a relationship? Well, expectations, standards and behaviours sometimes change.

How people see situations, circumstances and events, can change. How we make sense of our world can change. Because we, or others begin to behave as though we are singing out of

tune, behaviours that demonstrate disregard and rejection often take the place of care and kindness.

If we practiced more effective relationship skills, we might have a better chance of feeling OK. One of the saddest things that can happen as we get older, might be the feeling that we are not valued and appreciated in a manner that makes us feel OK. We need to have a feeling of belonging to feel good about ourselves. We also need to feel that we are accepted for who we are and what we have provided.

To be really emotionally and psychologically healthy, we also need to have the courage to stop investing our energies and regrets in things that don’t pay off. Self-care is important.

If your evaluation of yourself is that you are singing out of tune, you need to develop an active concern for yourself, then make some adjustments, so you can feel better.

I was he and he was I – a glimpse of immortality Watching his grandson’s football game, HARRY DENNIS remembers his own youth on the field and gets a glimpse of life’s continuity.

I

knew that this would be a night to remember. My grandson was playing under lights on the main ground in the Under 14s. Unbelievable, how good can it get? I played under age football on the MCG but not under lights.

The organisation and management of the team is so professional. They mimic all the behaviour from the top AFL clubs. They have a coach, assistant coach, runners, water carriers and a first aid officer.

I have to pinch myself that this is only an Under 14s game.

It is a frosty night. The frogs up and down the creek have been silenced and we are enfolded by the heavy moist air.

I am positioned alongside the race through which the boys will run on to the oval.

Holding a hot mug of coffee, I listen to the coach giving the boys a motivational speech and then their voices rise as one, as they chant, “Go Roos”.

Moments later they burst

from the changing room with determination in their hearts, and adrenaline coursing through their veins. There is solidarity and security in numbers as the tightly bunched group run on to the ground. It strengthens their resolve.

For a brief but significant moment, I was he and he was I. Just like he, I stood at centre half back, legs astride, chest thrust forward, looking towards the forward line. I felt invincible. I could handle anything that came my way.

Power was within my marrow. I stood taller, I was stronger. All was before me.

Maybe it was the sprigs on the base of the football boots but it felt that I had an extra two inches of height. My spine was erect and strong. I breathed in the cold air. I was ready for battle yet again. The game was on. He nudged his opponent in the side to indicate his presence and intent that there was no easy ball to be had. He wore No.

35 on his back. It seemed a large enough innocuous number such that he should be regarded as a team player.

Not one of those players with single digit numbers on their backs was shooting for individual stardom. All for the team. Well, was that really true?

Maybe like I, he was really chasing stardom for himself, the team was secondary to personal success and acknowledgement that he really mattered.

I could see it in my grandson

and I understood fully because I had felt it and experienced it myself in my youth.

His opponent was taller but not as solid, not tall where it mattered in the heart, in the soul, in the bone marrow.

I intuited that my grandson had his opponent’s measure. He could leap higher and had more pace. That was in my head space and I hoped by some magical telepathy I could transfer this thought to my grandson.

To see every part of the play I repositioned myself around the ground, my focus always on him. While concentrating on his game I thought back to some of the great, and not so great, moments in my junior sport years. I value the lessons learnt in coping with success, disappointment and defeat.

To face adversity and take bad decisions on the chin are part of the training. To get up again and again after setbacks and foolish mistakes against all odds, is what maketh the

person. Sport, through the pressure of competition, provides instantaneous correction and drives us forward both to humility, understanding, compassion and excellence.

A defender is required to stick like glue to his opponent but also know when to leave and intercept the ball or assist a team mate. Burst through packs and make clearing kicks and provide drive into the forward line is the modus operandi.

I did all that back then until I came out the other side of a pack with a broken collar bone and little finger. He was doing it tonight under lights. He was now my legs carrying me forward with him. My eyes were moist and not because of the cold. For a moment, past and present merged such that I was he and he was I. They won the game, but the result was immaterial for I had gained a glimpse of life’s continuity and immortality.

anna Cry” is the name of the ransomware that encrypts your computer files and is aimed at extorting money in return for unlocking your files.

It was released on May 12, and specifically targeted government infrastructure through a message server protocol. Within three days it had spread to more than 230,000 computers in 150 countries and demanded $300-$600 for the key to unlock the encryption.

If you fall victim to this virus, it is virtually impossible to unencrypt your files without the key. Unfortunately, there is little reason for the perpetrators to provide the key even if you pay the fee, so the first lesson is DON’T pay the fee.

Another regular scam is directed at people selling on Gumtree or eBay. It usually comes by email and is worded like this: “I would have loved to call you directly but due to the nature of my work with the Australian Army Corps we do not have access to phone at the moment, which is why I contacted you with internet messaging facility.

“I want it to be the perfect graduation gift for my son and am making it a surprise package. I don’t mind adding an

extra $200 for you just to organise the posting. I am already in talks with freighters that will handle the pickup and delivery. I will really appreciate if you can email more info.”

These scams are aimed at enticing you to send the goods before you receive payment, or pay an upfront fee to release funds or pay for freight. Remember: • Only trade with local buyers who you can meet in person.

• Do not engage in overseas transactions.

• Do not send any money upfront.

The key is vigilance and prevention.

Make sure your internet and email security is up to date. Buy an external hard drive from the local technology store, twice the storage size as your computer, and back up your computer regularly.

You will inevitably come across a scam throughout the course of your computing life but there is no reason to live in fear; just plan to be safe, vigilant (and slightly cynical) when surfing the internet.

Forget fear, buying fashion online can be fun Shopping online is not as intimidating ting as you might think, w writes KAY McMAHON, whose new vintage textile and hand-printed fabric purchase has just arrived in an exciting parcel from India.

T

he Madame Hall design is a combination of traditional Kutch, Gujarat textiles in the bodice with hand-printed cotton in the skirt. It is glorious and very special.

But it was the experience: the designer discovery, purchase, delivery and then the wearing that made me realise that fast-fashion shoppers are missing out on so much of what is special about fashion.

Let me explain. The purchase was completed on-line in the Etsy store (etsy.com). But I have been following @madamehall on Instagram for many months.

Her story of being an ex-pat Sydney girl who worked in costume but is now living and working in Bhuj, India was inspiring enough.

But it is her love of traditional textiles from this local region and her Insta stories of the respect, acknowledgement and admiration for her small studio of “making” staff that sealed the deal for me.

She is a canny designer. Her designs are forgiving for Boomer bodies and simplify the angst of hoping the garment will fit on delivery.

Once purchased through the Etsy process, the tracking number was emailed and estimated delivery time confirmed.

The package which arrived at my door was small, but as required by India Post, stitched into a strong cloth (calico in this case) bag. Cute. Inside was a beautiful hand-embroidered, branded Madame Hall calico bag with my dress folded neatly

inside that. And attached to the dress was a hand-written note from Lisa (Madame Hall) herself.

How special.

But the best was yet to come.

The many comments from old and young fashionistas at an event where I was on the panel, warmed my fashion heart. Many of the millennials had never seen traditional Indian textiles up close before.

The more mature in the audience, who have an appreciation of textiles, admired the contemporary design combination and the knowledge that this was a garment that was inclusive for all ages and body types.

(Madame Hall’s Etsy followers have increased I’m sure.)

So, although by some people’s standards this dress was not cheap, to me it ticked all the boxes for the many reasons I love fashion.

1. It was made by people whose faces and names have been acknowledged by the designer and are credited constantly for their painstaking and quality making expertise. Very ethical.

2. Madame Hall’s designs include traditional local embroideries and textiles with many vintage pieces that are up-cycled into her designs. Love the sustainability aspect.

3. There is always an interesting and traceable story to Lisa’s

pieces. A transparent supply chain.

4. It fits me. Woohoo!

5. It makes me feel fabulous when I wear it. Double woohoo!

6. There are not thousands of the same garment in the world.

This is unique and special fashion that does not cost a fortune.

This experience has also taught me that Baby Boomers need not be afraid of buying some things online. This dress is not available at a store.

I would not have been the proud owner of this unique and exquisite fashion item if I had been afraid of embracing online sales.

And now I’m off to workshop it with my vintage Japanese silk kimono and my woollen footless tights, because it has turned nippy this morning.

A tiddler with a lot of zoom-zoom THE small car class, that bunch of tiddlers from all corners of the world, is no big money-spinner for car companies in Australia, writes BRUCE McMAHON.

M

argins are tight and profits slim.

And these days more people, young and old, are looking to SUVs from small to large.

Yet there’s need, and some bread and butter here as well, for dealers to have small cars on the showroom floor. And there’s always the likelihood that a frugal customer buying into a brand’s small car will continue up the size chart as needs change and funds swell.

Mazda is one of those that has done okay out of the babies since the Mazda 121 of the mid-1980s. These days the Mazda 2 is one of the best of all small city cars around; since 2002 almost 170,000 Mazda 2s have been driven out of showrooms.

The current generation of Mazda 2 arrived in 2014 and this season takes on some minor upgrades to remain a class-leader.

There is precious little on the outside to differentiate this updated car. Both hatch and sedan have clean and crisp style lines as before.

Both run with a 1.5 litre engine and choice of manual or automatic transmissions to drive the front wheels.

The handsome hatchback version

remains just over 4m long and about 1.7m wide; the sedan is 4.3m long, about 1.7m wide and a fraction lower. These dimensions, and a 2.5m wheelbase, allow the Mazdas exceptional turning circles, most handy in today’s shopping centre car parks.

Despite these compact dimensions, the Mazda 2 is quite comfortable up front for full-sized Australians. And, as with all

modern Mazdas, the driver is wellcatered for; seating position, ergonomics and visibility are all quite decent plus there’s that air of zoom-zoom sportiness to the cabin.

The rear seat is perhaps best left to grandkids or short outings with adults.

Standard gear includes air conditioning, power windows, pushbutton start, trip computer, cruise control

and Bluetooth connectivity for phones and such.

Move up through the four-variant range – Neo, Maxx, Genki and GT – and there are touch screens, satellite navigation and digital radios available.

But all Mazda 2s arrive with a string of safety and driver aids. There are traction and stability control systems, five airbags, hill-start assist and emergency brake assist.

Important here is the business of Smart City Brake Support for the front of all Mazda 2s. This detects a possible collision and brakes the car autonomously. The top three grades have this on the back of the vehicle as well.

(Neither does the base Neo model have a rear view camera as standard.)

Still, there’s more to a car than safety pillows and warning bells and electronic aids and the Mazda 2 is a comfortable riding car with safe and sure handling characteristics and enough performance to keep up with – many even get ahead of – city traffic.

It’s an agile and likeable small car with likeable prices starting at $14,990 and offering lots of combination choices through to $23,680 for a GT model.

BOOKS As winter sets in, it’s a perfect time to curl up warm in bed with a good book. GAYLEEN WILSON reviews some of the latest releases.

Heart Breaker

by Shannon Curtis This steamy romance begins with a murder.

After losing her father in an unsolved murder when she was a teenager, Harmony now finds her cousin’s body, and makes yet another promise to her mother to find the killers. The attraction with the detective handling the case is instant. More bodies are found confirming a serial killer is loose. Driven by her promise to her mother and her lack of faith after police were unable to solve her father’s murder, she sets to work, using her cyber forensic skills and becoming an anonymous informant. To set up the serial killer she attempts to use herself as bait. I was in suspense and can imagine this as a movie.

While it’s not the sort of book I would usually read at bedtime, I enjoyed it. It brings home the dangers present online.

A romantic novel based in southern France during the Crusades of the 12th century, I appreciated the glossary but also used Google to check some of the words used in this era.

I give the author 10/10 for the storyline and the enjoyment of this book. It is hard to put down.

Richart, a powerful Lord, has agreed to an arranged marriage. Adele, a maidservant takes the identity of that look-a-like bride. When Richart is overthrown by his uncle and halfbrother he is imprisoned and Adele is taken away.

Deception has lost her the comfort, grand feasts and trappings of wealth.

Crusaders have started a religious war which causes the terror, unhappiness and hardships in day to day life.

While separated they suffer horror and ill-treatment and their reunion does not simplify their safety.

A great read, fast moving with a few twists and turns which kept you interested to the end.

In a small rural Australian town, cracks begin to show in the relationships of typical happilymarried families when temptations are acted upon. Could something as simple as marital communications have prevented the domino effect of loose morals, deceit and disloyalties of these closely-woven families? The arrival of a new male principal and the attraction of the president of the P&C sets the school on fire. When reputations and respectability are on the line, blame must be cast on others. Blackmail forces the principal to take stress leave which enables the township to get back to its pre-principal lives with even more cracks in relationships.

Can the dedicated principal return to a hostile community? The result is more manipulation, loose morals, deceit and disloyalties and some new beginnings.

This novel left me feeling flat. No chance of happy escapism with negative values of characters reminding you too much of real life.

This romantic novel has family secrets, and new relationships from old acquaintances.

Residents work together to bring money and people back into their small town which holds too many memories and emotional baggage that has followed two sisters into adulthood. The return of an unwanted ex-wife and non-maternal mother to town strengthens the siblings in their efforts to regain a friendship after years of being separated by distance and childhood animosity.

Good story lines are set in this country town where people who made negative long-term decisions after past unsuccessful relationships are given a second chance to move on and get over their fears to trust again.

I enjoyed the story lines and found it an easy read, with problems facing the characters being realistic.

If you like the style of Jodie Picoult, you’ll like the complex interpersonal relationships. The insight into the tulip growing industry is a bonus.

Even the ghost’s former dreams are relived.

The author keeps a steady flow of twists and turns of characters as well as covering the real feel of hardship for today’s dairy farmer.

A good read.

During brain surgery, the first black Pope has a near-death experience and receives a message which imbues him with new understanding and determination. The Church must use its vast resources to help the sick and the poor. Other Christian religions must do the same. The Catholic Church should also change its policies on contraception, celibacy, and women in the church. After this divine inspiration, the Pope must implement vast changes which alienate cardinals from the developed world, as well as powerful nations and dark forces within the Vatican.

What a weary, dreary husband and wife are Harold and Maureen. Having no rapport with the central characters of this book, I plodded on, hoping for a brighter outcome .

On a spur of the moment decision Harold decides to walk to visit Queenie, an old work colleague, who is now residing at a hospice miles away. He just starts walking.

Poorly prepared he ends up with the most appalling, blistered, suppurating feet.

This vividly descriptive passage did me in!

Even the fauna and flora of the English countryside failed to lift my spirits. This book was not for me.

This allegorical tale is unusual and quite refreshingly different from most novels. Harold’s unplanned and unlikely 627 mile walk to save a friend from cancer is really an unrealised pilgrimage to save himself. As he walks he mentally walks through his past life.

He finds the answers to his feelings of poor self-worth and ordinariness. He finds a new connection to people and nature. He finds new freedom, renewed love and affection for his wife, forgiveness and redemption for past failures.

It is a bit repetitive and long winded at times and has a fairly predictable ending. Good job 7/10

BOOK review JOHN KLEINSCHMIDT Author Rachel Joyce conveys the emotions of Harold’s pilgrimage or “walk of faith” with absolute clarity of heart and mind. This book is not a warm and fuzzy read as I thought it might be. Rather, I found my feelings ebb and flow with the achievements and failures of Harold’s unplanned and ill considered walk to save Queenie and his self-determined appraisal of the disaffection of his wife and son. While the story is embellished there are no pretentious words or complicated plot. It is a simple, well-told story about an ordinary man and his emergence from a mundane existence. Surprisingly, a very enjoyable read.

THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF HAROLD FRY

This is a charming book that is indeed a pilgrimage, a story of love, loyalty, courage, regret, forgiveness and discovery of oneself. Traumas and secrets long unsaid are relived and realised. Harold meets many different characters along the way, each with a story and a lesson for him. He learns to live off the land and the kindness of strangers with nothing more than he set off with.

His life is changed forever as is his relationship with his wife - all for the better! Loved it.

Recently retired Harold Fry lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does. Little differentiates one day from the next.

One morning a letter arrives, addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl, from a woman he hasn’t heard from in 20 years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye. But before Harold mails off a reply, a chance encounter convinces him to deliver his message in person.

In his yachting shoes and light coat, Harold Fry embarks on an urgent quest, determined to walk 600 miles to the hospice.

MARY BARBER I found the writing jarring at times. Some sentences didn’t flow well. As for the story, it’s a sad tale. Harold sets out to post a letter to a dying friend and ends up walking the length of England to give it to her instead.

The journey is an inner one and an outer one. Harold is doing penance for the things he failed at in life, or thought he failed at – being a good father, a good husband and a loyal friend.

I enjoyed the descriptions of the English countryside and the varied characters who joined Harold along the way. I have also read the second book which tells the story from Queenie’s point of view. That was excellent.

Initially this book irritated me! The practicalities were missing – how did Harold pay for his lodgings and meals! Not to worry – I was soon enticed into Harold’s journey of self discovery and his gradual understanding of the life events which had shaped him. It is also his wife Maureen’s story – left behind, indignant and angry and gradually sensing the possibility of change for both of them.

This could have been a sentimental and boring story but I found it full of twists and turns with a few surprises. I loved the writer’s style – the cameos of many of the people Harold meets are priceless. Many of the characters have stayed in my mind especially the ones who “joined the walk” introducing humour and pathos at the same time.

For me Harold’s pilgrimage is motivational! Many of us “just exist” caught up in the busyness of life. How challenging and rewarding it might be to take our own time out and accept the crazy mix of experiences that make us who we are and dare to change like our Harold and Maureen! Definitely recommended.

Watch out for the super changes Superannuation changes come into effect this month. Australian finance expert PETER SWITZER lists the top three points to remember as part of the new order.

1. SUPER CONTRIBUTIONS CAPS The annual contributions caps for both before-tax contributions, and after-tax contributions, have been reduced from this month 1 July. The before-tax contributions cap is down to $25,000 a year, and the after-tax contributions to $100,000 a year.

Remember if you exceed the beforetax contributions cap, the excess amounts will be included in your assessable income where they are taxed at your marginal rates plus an additional charge.

2. DON’T EXCEED THE $1.6 MILLION TRANSFER BALANCE CAP The new $1.6 million transfer balance cap limits the total amount of super you can transfer from your accumulation super accounts to tax-free retirement phase accounts to receive a super income stream. If your balance exceeds the new limit you may face consequences such as having to remove the excess and being liable for excess transfer balance tax. If the total value of your retirement phase accounts is between $1.6 million and $1.7 million you have six months to remove the excess capital without penalty.

3. TRANSITIONAL CGT RELIEF IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE CGT relief is only for assets held throughout the entire period from November 9, 2016 to June 30, 2017. This relief does not apply after July 1, where you take action to comply with the super changes, or your fund reallocates assets.

Your fund will also need to make an election to use the transitional CGT relief on or before your fund is ‘required to lodge’ its 2016-2017 tax return as it is not automatic.

The ATO is consistently updating information on its website to provide more information to help you prepare for the super changes.

PLAN AHEAD FOR PEACE OF MIND AN Enduring Power of Attorney and an Advance Health Directive are important documents, and each is quite different.

Depending on your circumstances, you might need one or both to protect yourself in the future.

So what do the documents do, and why do you need them?

A power of attorney for financial matters allows you to appoint a trusted person to look after your financial affairs either on a temporary basis (overseas travel or other absences) or on a longer-term basis should you lose capacity through sickness, accident or simply inability.

An Enduring Power of Attorney allows the trusted friend or relative to make decisions such as how you shall be treated medically. Having such documents in

place can be a great reassurance to both yourself and your family.

Additionally, retirement villages and aged care facilities may require you to have it in place before you take up residence.

The Advance Health Directive means you can make difficult health decisions yourself. Because of the far-reaching consequences of the decisions, it is a requirement that this document is completed by you in the presence of your doctor who then certifies it has occurred.

The Advance Health Directive document needs to be prepared before the doctor’s appointment. It is essential you receive and consider legal advice on the consequences before you go.

STROKE is a serious medical emergency which requires urgent medical attention, so it is essential to be aware of the warning signs and take action quickly.

“There are life-saving and disability reducing treatments available for stroke, but they are only effective if you get to hospital quickly,” Stroke Foundation CEO Sharon McGowan said.

The Stroke Foundation has a simple acronym to help people remember the signs of stroke: Face – has their mouth drooped?

Arms – can they raise both of their arms above their head?

Speech – is their speech slurred? Can they understand what you’re saying?

Time – Call triple zero (000) immediately. Do not delay.

Ms McGowan said a person was likely to show at least one of these signs when they were having a stroke but symptoms might appear only briefly.

A stroke happens every 10 minutes in Australia and can affect anyone, of any age. It is a sudden interruption of blood flow to the brain.

Brain cells can quickly die without the oxygen that the blood supplies.

“It happens in an instant and its effects can be devastating,” Ms McGowan said. “Too many people make the mistake of lying down, calling a family member or waiting to see their GP, when they should be calling an ambulance. We want everyone to understand stroke is a medical emergency, don’t just ‘wait and see’ call 000.”

What is keeping seniors awake?

ARM YOURSELF AGAINST STROKE

Aging affects sleep patterns so there’s a reason for the nanna nap, but set some boundaries and manage your sleep patterns, writes clinical psychologist KATHRYN SMITH and psychiatrist CURT GRAY for Sleep Awareness Week, July 3-9.

I

f the phrase “I slept like a baby” is far from your vernacular and you’ve noticed a gradual change in your sleep pattern, along with other undesirable physical changes, chances are you’ve fallen victim to the human phenomenon of aging.

Along with the physical changes that occur with aging, our sleep also deteriorates as we get older.

Having difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep is common in older adults and this can be due to a number of factors, including changes in sleep architecture and circadian rhythm.

Sleep is broken into repeated stages throughout the night, including light, deep and REM sleep (the active dreaming phase).

Typically, older adults spend more time in the light phase and therefore don’t get the satisfaction of a deep sleep. In addition, the natural circadian

rhythms that coordinate timing of bodily function is affected as we age. The body tires earlier in the evening resulting in an earlier wake time.

But the real disparity in the human phenomenon of aging is, even though our sleep is on the decline, its needs remain the same throughout adulthood.

This may be how the term “nanna nap” got its name – with less deep and REM sleep throughout the night, daytime fatigue leads older people to nap.

However, unless the nap is kept short (20 minutes or less) and before 3pm, daytime sleep can be counterproductive and lead to even less quality night time sleep.

Aging physiologies aside, sleep disturbance in the older adults can also be due to psychological, social or environmental factors, such as changes in accommodation, death of a partner, illness or chronic health concerns.

Older adults also tend to

have more worries or concerns that can keep them awake at night or lead to a restless sleep.

It is important to talk about feelings and emotional experiences just as you would present physical complaints to a doctor. Talking to a health professional about what is concerning you, at any stage of life, can provide a huge sense of relief, as well as empower you with strategies to manage day to day and probably sleep better at night.

Other effective ways to manage your sleep health

include: • Get regular exercise, particularly weight or resistance training as this has been shown to increase and deepen sleep.

• Learn a relaxation routine.

This will vary according to what relaxes you most.

• Avoid alcohol. Contrary to popular belief, it won’t help you sleep. It might put you to sleep but can disrupt your sleep throughout the night.

• Form a worry list. If you are a worrier, write down your worries on a list and review them during the day rather than thinking about them at night.

• Attempt to delay your bedtime to decrease chance of early morning waking.

• Stay out of bed when you are not sleeping.

HIGH blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke – and more than 4.1 million Australians have it but are not managing it.

A Stroke Foundation campaign encouraging Australians to check their blood pressure last month found that of more than 36,000 who took the test, 38 per cent of men and 26 per cent of women recorded high blood pressure.

“This is concerning because high blood pressure is one of the key factors in stroke, which is one of the nation’s biggest killers and causes of disability,” Stroke Foundation CEO Sharon McGowan said.

“More than 4.1 million Australians are living with uncontrolled high blood pressure. It does not have any symptoms, so the results have been a wake-up call for many.”

She recommends visiting a GP for the check and make the lifestyle changes needed to bring the reading down and reduce the stroke risk.

o one really desires to be sick, yet our hospitals and cemeteries are full of victims of lifestyle-related diseases. Over the years many patients have said, “If only I had stopped smoking; if only I had exercised more; if only I had beaten my sugar addiction; if only I had looked into healthy eating; if only...”

A perfect Finnish in Helsinki Travelling to Europe just became a whole lot more fun and relaxing. RODERICK EIME tests Finnair’s new Airbus A350 en route to Helsinki.

stablished as a proper city in the mid-16th century, Helsinki has plenty of history to go around and like so many Scandinavian cities, museums, restaurants and shopping districts abound with their own particular flavour.

Helsinki likes to ride on its “City of Design” status, a meritorious label attached to it by UNESCO, no less.

“Admittance to the City of Design Network fortifies Helsinki’s status among the design cities of the world,” proud Mayor Jussi Pajunen says.

So what does that mean?

“Functional design, unique gastronomy, maritime appeal and friendly locals” according to the website.

All of which I can attest.

Patient hosts from the city showed us the new and funky shops like those of TRE, Minna Parikka and 2OR+ where designers really lash out and we sampled several of the city’s progressive and

contemporary eateries that demonstrate this “unique gastronomy”.

The delightfully retro Vinkkeli served lunch and dinner was at compact and cosy Kuurna. Both make great use of local and seasonal foods – think smoked reindeer, ligonberries and root vegies.

There’s so much choice in Helsinki and Finns love to eat out.

What’s Finnish for “tipple”? They don’t mind a drink either, and there are plenty of fun places. We explored a quirky speakeasy called Trillby & Chadwick, modelled around prohibition drinking holes from the early 20th century and named after the famous private detective agency that once inhabited the place.

Yes, Finland had prohibition from 1919 to 1932. There’s even a slit in the front door, no photos allowed and when you’re done, you exit at the rear.

e started out early from Wallabadah as temperatures can reach 50C by midday in this part of the country in summer.

in history. There were 97 blazes across NSW while 37 fires were uncontained and at emergency level.

So, there we were, cruising down the Oxley Highway about 20km east of Walcha, keen to escape such a terrible, blazing hot day, when we spotted the sign “Welcome to Oxley Wild Rivers National Park”.

Even though we were keen to get to the coast and the Pacific breezes, we decided to drive in long enough to check if this was somewhere we would want to return.

The Apsley Falls picnic and campgrounds are 1km of bitumen road off the highway and a welcome surprise.

The falls were spectacular, with a picnic area, camping ground of 15 bush sites and a direct walking trail to the scenic Apsley Waterfall and rim gorge walking trails.

John Oxley was the first European to visit this area in September 1818, which would have been a much more pleasant time of year to turn up.

He was followed by cedargetters who made their way into this remote area with rugged gorges. Next came the graziers, working to make a living from the wilderness.

There is plenty of wildlife in the rugged bush, including cheeky brush-tailed rock wallabies that hop casually through the camp sites.

In fact, there are 350 animal species and abundant birdlife listed in this National Park which is part of the Gondwana

Rainforests of Australia World Heritage area and an excellent example of dry rainforest.

In spring, there are colourful wildflowers and in summer, the river waters are warmer than the Tablelands making it great for swimming and canoeing.

Winter has crisp, cool and clear days to enjoy a fire in individual pits set up at each camp site.

Three areas in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park have day use fees – Halls Peak, Riverside and Youdales – and no pets are permitted anywhere in the national park.

The campground is a short designated walk from all trail routes and the falls. The views are amazing across and down the gorge. There is another camp area (which we did not have time to see) at Budds Mare.

Vietnam’s frantic pace an exhausting attraction Third World, Communist and confronting with an amazing 92 million people – that’s Vietnam. AUDIENNE BLYTH takes a busy yet alluring 18-day tour.

eing 70-plus year olds, we believed we were up to it. There would be six flights, nine bus trips, several boat trips, a train journey of 13 hours, eight hotel changes, three treks in the jungle and long walks to pagodas.

Our date of departure was the beginning of summer (May) and temperatures were over 30C with humidity at 90 per cent.

Vietnam has a thin strip of coast over 3260km and mountainous regions that set it apart from neighbours, China, Cambodia and Laos. It has a long history of conflict and foreign invasion.

Vietnam has many facets. There are old trading towns such as Hoi An which had its heyday as a port in the 16th and 17th centuries; and the World Heritage site of the Cham people from the 7th to the 13th century. There are Buddhist monuments and pagodas; and grand buildings from the French occupation.

In a hot and humid climate, tropical orchids and lotus flourish and are on display for sale or filling public parks.

Traditional clothing is still worn by the slim Vietnamese women, the ao dai, a tunic over long pants.

After arriving in Hanoi from Singapore, our tour group took the

Terraces of Sapa near the Chinese border. three-hour bus ride down to Halong Bay. The bus was old and we sat with knees under our chins.

Halong Bay is a World Heritage attraction and provides the picture postcard scene often used to lure visitors to Vietnam. And they come. We counted about 30 boats, each with up to 50 cabins, while on the bay for three days.

Next, we travelled the winding and steep mountain road in another cramped old bus, for five hours to the Sapa Valley on the Chinese border, where we gazed in wonder at terraced rice fields.

Sapa and Halong Bay remain the highlights of the visit.

From Hanoi, we travelled by train

overnight to the old city of Hue. For 13 hours the train rocked and rolled in the manner we remembered from the Queensland trains of the 1960s.

The countryside is beautiful; farm workers plough with water buffalo and cut rice with scythes; villages have thatched roofs. At Danang, we were amazed by the spectacular yellow bridge with the fire-breathing-dragon super structure. Then, it was a flight to Nha Trang and a boat trip to the islands before another flight on to Ho Chi Minh City where the guide recounted stories of the Vietnam War. We heard about Ho Chi Minh, the burning Buddhist monk and Phan Thi Kim Phuc, the nine-year-old girl whose image became famous as she ran from the napalm attacks.

We travelled by boat along the wide, fast-flowing Mekong River and saw large paddy fields in an area known as the great rice bowl of Vietnam. There are rubber plantations and forests and an orchard offered a taste of exotic tropical fruits such as sapodilla, rambutan, jackfruit, mangosteen and durian.

An air-conditioned coach took us 70 km outside the city. How fortunate we were, sitting high above the sprawling poverty and roadside rubbish. Many

people live in slum-like conditions.

Land is expensive and if a family manages to purchase a small block, they build a house of three to seven stories to accommodate several generations. At street level, the house is rented as a shop to provide income for the owner.

Last call was to the underground tunnels of Cu-chi used by the Viet Cong forces. The extreme heat and the confrontational nature of the day was exhausting. The sheer size of Saigon is overwhelming, an enormous city of 13 million and 6.5 million motorcycles swarming the streets like angry bees.

The tour was rigorous, the weather uncomfortably hot and the countryside beautiful. And it was a relief to get home and relax.

DIRK HARTOG’S PLATE IN SYDNEY JUST over four hundred years ago, Dutch mariner Dirk Hartog (1580–1621) sailed into history when, on 25 October 1616, he made the first documented European landing on the west coast of Australia.

Until October 29, the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney will have the first European artefact to appear on Australian soil, the Dirk Hartog Plate, on loan from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

It is likely to be its last appearance outside the Netherlands.

Part of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), Hartog and his vessel Eendracht

were on a trading mission when they encountered fierce weather and deviated from their course. They eventually arrived in Shark Bay, Western Australia.

Having happened upon this new and distant land, Hartog raised an inscribed pewter plate – the Dirk Hartog Plate – as a testimony of his arrival and departure.

The plate was recovered more than 80 years later by Willem de Vlamingh in 1697 and taken to Amsterdam. It now consists of 17 separate fragments.

Mephisto is coming home ONE of Australia’s most significant war artefacts, the German tank Mephisto has returned to Queensland.

The only surviving German A7V Sturmpanzerwagen tank in the world, Mephisto is one of the best known objects in the Queensland State Collection.

Mephisto was salvaged by the 26th Battalion, which was made up mostly of Queenslanders, during World War I. The soldiers helped drag the abandoned tank behind allied lines near VillersBretonneux in July 1918. It arrived in Brisbane in June 1919. Tanks were first used on the battlefield on the Somme in 1916. Since July 2015, the 33 tonne, 8m tank has been on display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

After being carefully wrapped, Mephisto, accompanied by a team of museum conservators, was transferred to a de-humidified balloon-like cover called a carcoon at The Workshops Rail

Museum in Ipswich. It is now on show at the Ipswich museum but will return to the Queensland Museum at South Bank.

Chairman David Conry said Mephisto was considered part of the state’s history.

“Like many Queenslanders I have fond memories of visiting Mephisto as a child while it was at the old Museum in Bowen Hills and having my photo taken with it.”
