Editor’s note

I

’m not even going to mention the “R” word in this welcome to the new year. What’s the point? The years are rolling so fast into each other that if I haven’t got it right by now, resolving to do things differently isn’t going to help.

That said, I can set out to hope that I will survive another year intact, mentally and physically. And it will be December again before we know it.

As much as I hate to be cynical, I am the New Year Grinch. I have never seen much point in putting on a silly hat, blowing a whistle and trying to convince myself that in a single stroke of midnight life is going to change dramatically; that January 1 is going to be much different to December 31.

Contents Y2K bug that was going to shut down the world? But midnight came and went and nothing happened, No momentous change. Nothing.

Mind you, I’ve always been a bit of a sucker for joining hands and singing Auld Lang Syne. Some of my best new year memories were made in my small neighbourhood, playing tennis and swimming on rural acreage while the kids ran amok. It was relaxed, easy and in good company, so there’s not much more to wish for.

Fun seems to come from much humbler activities than huge fireworks displays.

If you have any special memories of new year celebrations I would love to hear them.

So now it’s out with the old and crack on with the new calendar year, a perfect time to launch a quest for happiness. As Lorraine Page points out in this issue, laughter is still the best medicine. Perhaps that’s the best resolution (oops, I said it) of all, a simple quest for happiness, in whatever form it takes. And so, I wish you all a very happy new year.

Laugh in the new year – happiness is up to you The pursuit of happiness is a life-long business, a science even, and, writes LORRAINE PAGE, there are simple steps you can take every day to tip the scales of personal contentment in your favour.

A

s a new year rolls out like a blank canvas, you may have had more than a passing thought on how to turn every “Happy New Year” you’ve been wished into just that.

We live in a culture that encourages us to be our best, bright, bubbly selves, but reaching those dizzying heights of self-exhortation often elude us.

Sure, we can book into happiness conferences or retreats, buy books on wellbeing, hire a happiness coach and even take study courses about the personal, social and professional advantages of happiness at work – or we can try something much more lighthearted.

When David Hume donates blood, the 54-year-old leader of the Banyo Beehive Laughter Club is told he has the blood pressure of a 21-year-old.

“It’s a positive thing to hear,” he says,

“and I put that down to laughter and general exercise as well.”

Following in the waddling footsteps of silent-film comic Charlie Chaplin, who’s reputed to have said, “a day without laughter is a day wasted”, he’s one of many Australians laughing for wellness through “laughter yoga” since its arrival Down Under in 2003.

Around Brisbane there are a number of laughter clubs all run by certified leaders, springing from one started 15 years ago in inner-city New Farm Park.

Regionally, there are clubs as far afield as Hervey Bay, Mackay, Rockhampton, Mount Isa and Cairns.

The Banyo club usually attracts more women than men prepared to try something new, but the activity is for everyone and all ages.

Apart from tapping into ancient religious traditions, what else makes for a happy, healthy and meaningful life?

According to what is probably the world’s longest study of adult life, the Harvard Study of Adult Development, one clear message keeps emerging: good relationships keep us happier and healthier, not fame or fortune.

The 75-year study is still going strong and is now turning its attention to the Baby Boomer children of the original participants.

Rather be thankful for the fact that we wake up in the morning, then start to have fun and be joyful. It’s up to us to expand the possibilities available.

If you’ve ever been tempted to feel a little smug about your love life when friends around you are splitting up, then that’s the time to look at your own relationship.

Couples counsellor, Raywyn Roberts, a clinical psychotherapist with Partnership Power Counselling, says it’s never too late to revive a relationship that’s been limping along and, in doing so, reboot your own happiness.

“Couples come and see me and they’ve got something from 20 to 30 years ago, or from when they first

married that they haven’t repaired,” she says.

“It’s like having an elephant in the room, or a thorn in your shoe. It’s never too late, especially when you have so many memories to pull from.

“There doesn’t need to be anything psychologically wrong with people to go to couples counselling. I’ve had people who’ve said I just want my relationship to be better.

“When home is going right, we have the extra energy to go out into the world.”

Mending a stuck relationship can take a number of sessions, and while there’s no government rebate for couples counselling, limited rebates are available from private health funds.

Treating yourself to a week’s holiday may feel good at the time, but it’s far smarter, Raywyn says, to invest in therapy for long-term relationship happiness.

Letters MY brother has been on the national queue for a Home Care Package Level 4 for 820 days.

He is content to wait his turn but would like to be reassured about the mechanics of how it is administered.

How does a queue operate when there are two criteria to be taken into account at the same time: level (ACAT 1-4) and priority (High, Medium and N/A)?

What exactly is the algorithm?

When new Level 4 places are released, are these allocated first to High Priority Level 4 and then if not exhausted to Medium and then to N/A? If so, this would mean that a client assessed as Level 4 but accepting an interim package at a lower level (priority N/A) is somewhat disadvantaged, as they deteriorate (on a “blank” priority).

The department should provide more clarity in this area. When the quarterly reports are published, it would be more informative if the tables could give the maximum wait time of clients by level and priority, not just the average, which is potentially misleading.

REASONABLY cheap houses can be built – the key cost is land, commonly called Raw Land cost.

As a project engineer manager, I have been involved with some large developments and have observed greed on percentage profit and tricks to get people to buy urgently which brings me to the current situation of many going into retirement with almost no money.

It’s true and probably will get worse although I would have thought more males would be in the situation because in a divorce, females usually get the house. Either way, I estimate about two million people are going into retirement who, with a partner, could pay off a small new home with $110, 000, share paying about $150 a week which is cheaper than renting a dump in a slum suburb.

Extending the share amount to $150, 000 the repayment is probably just over $200 a week plsu rates $20-$30 a week twin share. There exists such properties in medium class areas already, but they are not common.

Many banks have a policy (probably illegal on age and finance discrimination)

of not lending to the retired or pensioners. There are still a few who do, and they will consider a 5 per cent but want a 10 per cent deposit.

A hopeful buyer then would need $5,000-$10, 000 for a deposit.

A better method would be to form a co-operative where cheap land is purchased, say 54 lots, as is now for sale at Tweed Heads. Apply to council as a housing development and get quotes from town planners, engineers, contractors, etc. For just over $100,000 each, two and three-bedroom houses could be developed in some small towns.

Building cost is about $1300 sq m, so a two-bedroom, two-bathroom compact home of 60-100sq m would be $76,000$130,000 plus land cost for a total of $200,000-$250,000, which is then divided between people.

If someone could collect together 10 to 100 people who want to live in a certain district, have a small deposit and a commitment to buy on completion, this system would work well. But a good organiser would be necessary.

I WAS delighted to read in the December magazine that there are others who are also critical of the incorrect usage of “disinterested” as synonymous with “uninterested”.

Disinterested also means “having the interests of others at heart, unselfish”.

I recall an article about the relationship between Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Charles was said to have become “disinterested” in Diana. If that had been the case, the marriage might have been much happier.

genuine relics. There are three claiming to have the head of St John the Baptist in various parts of Europe.

The Benedictine Abbey in the town of Ebersberg in Germany claims to have possessed Sebastian’s cranium encased in silver since 934 AD. On St Sebastian’s Feast Day (January 20), this is used as a cup from which the faithful receive the consecrated communion wine. The St Stephen’s story has also been subjected to the gruesome side of Christian piety.

On Boxing Day in Ireland, budding delinquents (who became known as Wren Boys) would dress up and use the example of Stephen’s death by stoning as an excuse to stone to death innocent wrens and peddle them to households in exchange for money.

That tradition has (hopefully) long ceased, but Wren Boys still dress up in some areas and go around town collecting money for charity.

A final note, 10 years ago I was in England during a severe snow storm and signed up for a walking tour around Oxford of sites associated with the Inspector Morse stories.

We fell into a line as we trudged through the snow, and I found it easiest to step into the grooves made by the person in front of me. It was then that I

Contentment comes with a downsized ‘want’ list When long-standing arrangements for a weekend away fell through, KATE CALLAHAN was more relieved than disappointed.

I

f I’m to be entirely honest, I was slightly exhilarated when told that the plans had turned to custard.

It’s not that I wasn’t looking forward to the weekend or that I didn’t like the people I was going with. It’s simply that cancellation of the weekend meant I didn’t have to bother packing, driving or making arrangements for the dogs.

More significantly, it meant I could revert to my favourite pastime – pottering around the house and engaging in unremarkable domestic business.

Prune the roses. Wash the clothes.

Fill the bird feeders. Water the pots.

Snooze the afternoon away.

It sounds terribly tedious, I admit, but I love the humdrum of my predictable existence.

In truth, I have turned into a boring old homebody, who craves peace, quiet and my own company.

It wasn’t always like that, however.

There was a time when I yearned for excitement and all the material possessions I didn’t have.

When I was 10, I ached for a horse.

Somewhere along the way, I’d encountered Anna Sewell’s novel Black Beauty. Then when I became a dedicated

coloured inserts in the daily rags. I remember falling in love with the first Mater home I visited.

It was a towering two-storey job, massive to the eye of a child from the bush. It was made from gleaming white brick and crowned with a tiled roof as blue as Twiggy’s eyeshadow.

It had everything our little farm house didn’t. I was mesmerised by the neatness of the gleaming white quartz in the driveway and the pristine garden beds. The lounge had cream shag carpet, My Friend Flicka fan, I was well and truly hooked on the romantic notion of owning a horse.

I campaigned hard, but romance met reality. My ever-practical father was quite unmoved.

“A horse eats three times as much as a cow,” he said, and that was the end of it.

It was never discussed again.

I traded horseflesh for bricks and mortar not long after.

There was floral wallpaper, built-in cupboards, pictures on the walls, a shower in the bathroom and a tiled floor in the laundry. The Mater home was in Aspley or perhaps Bill Bowden’s “Little Aspley” – Strathpine.

It must have been summer because waiting outside was a pink and white Mr Whippy Van, catering to an eager line-up of children and adults wanting soft-serve ice-cream.

Although I preferred the more familiar Mr Frosty, the purveyor of soft-serve treats that trawled the Brisbane of my childhood, I was delighted to have a coin pushed into my palm by an indulgent uncle and skipped off to join the queue.

As I grew older, Mater homes were replaced with other serious longings. As a teenager, I craved independence and a car of my own.

As a young mother, all I wanted was a good night’s sleep, someone to cook a meal for me and a leather lounge.

At university, I was obsessed with good grades and end of semester celebrations. In my 40s and 50s, I wanted travel, career progression, nights out and a big salary to pay off the mortgage.

And now I’m a down-sizing ageing hermit who tells her kids not to buy anything for her birthday because “I have everything I want and more than I need”.

I’m content and thankful. It’s a pretty good place to be.

Be prepared for life’s box of chocolates When I was just 11 years old, and about to be banished for eight years to a boys’ boarding school, my mother gave me my first huswif. It was pronounced “huzziff” and was my daily reminder of Mum, writes DAVID PARMITER.

“Y

ou’ll need this,” she said, “for sewing on buttons and mending your socks”.

The kit included needle and thread, scissors, some grey wool and a darning needle. Also an egg for protecting my fingers as I darned the holes in my socks.

In those days, you learned stuff! There were also a couple of bandaids for when I pricked myself and a small bottle of TCP for dabbing on the wounds and preventing infection.

Oh yes, in those days you learned about personal health and safety; but this was “do it yourself, look after yourself” and don’t let the Nanny State interfere and ruin your life.

We didn’t.

We all had our home emergency kit, the “housewife” or huswif. It also turns out my Dad was given one when he joined the Royal Navy as a 17-year old midshipman.

In Old English, the housewife was the

keeper of the hearth; the provider of meals, carer of children and old people, and the person who kept the family together. No Centrelink in those days.

The “hus-bond” (pronounced hoosebond) was the guardian of the house; the hunter and provider of the food and the protector of the family. When danger threatened, the husband would join with the other fathers and together they would face the foe. That was his job.

So, what went wrong? Why did it all change?

In the Middle Ages, it took a village to raise a child. It also took a village to look after the elderly, the infirm and the intellectually challenged. There was no government agency to pick up the pieces, so people looked after themselves ... and each other.

Even the lady of the manor would come around and visit the homes of the poor to offer food, medicines and comfort.

That was part of her job. She was the welfare state.

The lord of the manor would put on Christmas food and festivities for everyone. That was part of his job and responsibility.

Summer, inspired.

Fast forward to 2018, and everything is different. Toddlers are often raised in child care centres while mum and/or dad, or both, work to pay off the banks’ usurious interest rates.

In the suburbs, many mothers spend four hours a day in their cars trying to get to work, or home again in time for dinner, and before the kids go to bed. Many fathers face the same challenge.

What happened to sitting down with the child on your lap and helping them read? What happened to watching age-appropriate TV with children?

Asking about their day at school and discussing world events? Explaining why their devices are strictly rationed to no more than for homework research?

And then there is the family library.

Read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Why? Because you might learn something about life 150 years ago; tolerance, self-reliance.

Then there is the use of language.

Why are so many inarticulate? Can’t string four words together without umms, errs and grunts – and that includes TV and radion reporters.

There was a time when children

could recite some short poems like Daffodils by William Wordsworth and were introduced to some of Shakespeare’s sonnets (there are 150 of them). Or the better of his 36 Plays, like Macbeth, Julius Caesar and Hamlet.

What are they about? How would you have behaved in a similar situation?

After all, the plot-lines are repeated daily in our lives and in our newspapers.

Canberra and politics anyone?

“Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get” said Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump. And life for most of us may turn out to be a box of chocolates.

If we pick a hard nut, hopefully we have the right upbringing and skills to crack it.

One of the greatest skills we can learn and pass to our children and grandchildren, is the ability to put together words into sentences, paragraphs into an essay, and to deliver a speech in public (stage or parliament) to prove to everybody that we are coherent, articulate and professional in the use of our English language.

That’s the least we can do.

The Golden Girls Eight years ago, four 50+ women decided to join an eight-week gym challenge. Their lives were changed forever, writes CHRISTINE PITCHER.

W

hen they signed up, the “girls” were aged 53 to 62 years and had varying levels of fitness.

Wendy Howe and Jenny Warburton already knew each other and Chris Warwick and Debbie Baird signed up individually.

At the time, all they had in common was that they feared they were becoming couch potatoes and were keen to do something about it.

Chris had always been an elite athlete, so the challenge was welcomed. For the others, there were mixed emotions.

Wendy, the oldest of the group, had spent many years bushwalking but had never seriously trained at a gym.

Jenny and Debbie had some exercise experience, but nothing compared with what the challenge would bring.

The four soon teamed up and before long, they had become known as the Golden Girls.

The name stuck and so have they, turning an eight-week

In the first training session, their personal trainer John Ward, asked Wendy how she was going.

He describes her blank look as being a bit scary and said she subsequently collapsed into his arms.

Wendy, at 70, is now intimidating, lifting twice the weights of other youngsters in

the gym. Part of the challenge was to run 1.6km – Jenny describes it as being a struggle which took her 12 minutes.

The run inspired them though, and they took it up as a regular activity. Within six weeks they had significantly reduced their times and they haven’t stopped since.

They continued their workouts with their trainer, lifting weights, cardio fitness, and gym classes as well as swimming

and water aerobics. Jenny, who is now 67, said when she started she was unfit and overweight.

“Now I am 7kg lighter, feeling fit, healthy and toned,” she says.

“When I started running my heart rate would go up to 190, now I’m averaging 148 just by improving my fitness.”

The four run and exercise six days a week and have competed in a variety of events including the Noosa Marathon, Gold Coast Fun Run and the City to Surf in Sydney.

They regularly participate in Park Runs, with Chris, 63, being rated in the top 10 per cent of competitors in the world for her age division.

The girls continue to train with Ward at Invigorate Gym. He has been there from the start and continually encourages and challenges them to achieve more.

And they love it.

Their goal is to run 1000 km in one year.

They have also set their sights on the Mudgee Wine race which includes wine tastings

along the way.

The Golden Girls also raise money for charity – the Butterfly Foundation, an organisation which offers support for those with eating disorders.

They plan to do more fundraising in 2019 and for this group of Baby Boomers, the sky is the limit.

Competing in this year’s Noosa Marathon when they finished third in their division, which wasn’t based on age but gender.

HISTORY

Saddle up, schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in for another year As another year begins, we can look back on some remarkable changes in the classroom since education began on the North Coast, writes AUDIENNE BLYTH

O

ur first provisional primary schools were at Buderim in 1875 and Mooloolah Plains and Mooloolah Bridge in 1878 and 1879.

The Maroochy Provisional School was opened between Yandina and Nambour in 1879 with children from both Yandina and Nambour attending to make up the required number of 12.

A provisional school became a state school when the number exceeded 30 but until then, parents raised funds and supplied timber for a building as well as a suitable site along with a horse paddock.

Both teacher and children rode horses to school, often along bush tracks. Until a provisional school was built at Eumundi, George Gridleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s children attended Fairhill Provisional School â&#x20AC;&#x153;walking along a five mile track their father had brushed for themâ&#x20AC;?.

The teacher banned tomahawks at school after they chopped down a tree to catch a koala and the tree fell on a pupil and knocked him out. The koala escaped to another tree.

At lunch time they liked to find native beesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; nests or catch

lobsters. Once they got wet through by shaking bushes and had to be sent home early.

Another time they let the teacherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s horse out of the paddock, mischief that was remedied with the dreaded cane.

Teachers of those early days coped with remote conditions.

The first teacher at Yandina Provisional School in 1889 came to Maroochydore by the steamer Tarshaw, was met by a

committee member and rowed up the Maroochy River to Yandina. At Lower Doonan Provisional School the teacher complained that she not only shared her bedroom with one of her pupils but because of a lack of spare beds, also her bed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bad roads no less than the distances involved prohibit travelling â&#x20AC;Ś all of which conspires to render Lower Doonan a swamp-pitted, inaccessible jailâ&#x20AC;?.

There was much emphasis on parades and marching, sitting up straight and using good manners.

On school verandas, children chanted tables and spellings, learning by rote.

Classrooms contained long wooden desks and benches. Slots in the desk held slates, a smaller slot held slate pencils.

A vesta tin with a small sponge for cleaning the slate was kept handy. A cupboard or press in the corner of the room held reading books and copybooks. A monitor measured out the ink

for the inkwells on each desk and gave out the pens and nibs.

No one wanted to blot a copybook as children practised the art of neat writing.

A teacherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s equipment was a large clock, a desk and chair, a large blackboard, chalk and a duster. A cane or two was also on issue and could be applied to outstretched hands for misdemeanours, even forgotten homework.

With an increased population, one-teacher schools became a feature of farming communities. Highlights of the year were Arbor Day, District Sports Day and Break-up Day. Perwillowen, Cooloolabin, Poona, Kiamba, Valdora, Yandina Creek and Brownsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Creek are some of the hinterland one-teacher schools that once flourished.

Most closed in the 1960s and children were transported by bus to bigger centres. School days, to many of us, were some of the best days of our lives.

Tune in to the new fashion buzz

Seeing myself as a fashion aficionado with a focus on over-50-year-olds, I’m forever on the lookout for whatever the zeitgeist is in the world of fashion, writes KAY McMAHON.

I

’m keen to stay current with the designers I mentor, the people I work with, and the two generations of family I have helped create.

Last year was the year of Instagram for fashion followers.

For younger busy families, Instagram is about staying in touch with family and friends by only having to post a photo and add a few hashtags. (Apparently making your own hashtag has huge credibility.)

However, for me, it has been about finding like-minded Boomers who are also navigating this new world we call “aging”.

From advanced style “Insta celebrities” displaying their over-50 style and gaining millions of “Insta friends”, to many of us just sharing photos of what we see and wear on our holidays, this technology has introduced a new mode of global communication.

But here we are at the beginning of 2019 and there is a new buzz in fashion: the podcast.

While many of you may have listened to the Radio National True Crime series, there are also many specific podcasts that take fashion seriously and contribute to the conversation of its relevance in this world.

Like some of you, I’m a late-comer to this medium.

Many of the younger generation say they listen to podcasts on their commute to work in peak hour traffic, cleaning the house, pounding the streets while exercising, chilling in the bath or getting through mindless administration work.

It seems it’s an activity where multitasking is easy.

Local fashion podcaster Carla van Lunn of Fashion Wayfinder fame, believes it’s because of this that the podcast has

become so popular among so many.

“You don’t have to always have your eyes on a screen,” she said. “I love podcasts because they are so ‘indie’ as well and I can finally listen to people talking about fashion in an interesting and serious way.

I am also able to pause the conversation and return to it later.”

IN THE KITCHEN

Chicken on Sweet Corn Puree

Tahini Chewy Bars

Serves 4

Makes 12

• 4 large (200g each) corn cobs • 4 x 150g boneless, skinless chicken breast halves • 2 tablespoons (20g) coriander seeds, ground

• 1/3 cup (60g) raisins • ½ cup (130g) tahini • ½cup (120g) agave nectar (honey or rice malt syrup) • 1 ½ cups (150g) rolled oats

• 1 punnet (250g) cherry tomatoes

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a 20 x 20cm square cake tin with baking paper. In a large bowl, stir together the tahini and agave.

Stir in the oats and raisins. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and smooth with the back of a spoon.

Remove the kernels from the corn by carefully cutting downwards. Steam the corn and puree with a little of the water from the steamer. Season to taste. In a nonstick frying pan, add 2 tablespoons of water and cook the chicken over moderate/ high heat for 4-5 minutes each side, or until cooked through. In the last minute, add the coriander seeds and cracked pepper, turning to completely coat the chicken. Set aside to rest.

Bake for 10 minutes or until golden. Cool completely before slicing to serve.

Add the tomatoes and sauté until just softened. Serve the chicken on the sweet corn puree and top with sautéed tomatoes.

Here are some healthy new year ideas from the 4 Ingredients Diabetes cookbook, so they are all suitable for diabetics and require just four ingredients.

Chocolate Cinnamon Mousse Serves 6 • 4 x 200g avocados • ½ cup (45g) raw cacao powder • ¾ cup (180g) agave nectar • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Halve the avocados and scoop out the flesh. Place all the ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth, using a spatula to scrape the sides. Spoon into serving glasses or a healthy, raw cheesecake base and chill for a couple of hours before serving.

Thai Salmon Cakes Serves 4 • 2 cups mashed sweet potato • 2 tablespoons Thai red curry paste • ½ cup coarsely chopped coriander • 400g cooked salmon (or 415g can, no added salt pink salmon, drained and cartilage removed) Place the sweet potatoes in a large saucepan, cover with cold water, and bring to the boil. Boil for 10 minutes or until tender.

Drain well, cool and mash. Add the remaining ingredients, season with cracked pepper, shape into patties and cook in a nonstick frying pan over medium heat until just golden brown, about four minutes a side.

You will be amazed how rich and creamy this amazing mousse is and made mostly with raw, nutritious ingredients.

Know where you’re heading The tech majors are out in force to woo you with their wares and part you from your money. The start of a new year is a good time to sit back and take stock of what gadgetry might – or might not – be helpful, writes NATHAN WELLINGTON.

T

his is a good time to think about your tech wares and see if they’re in need of an upgrade, or if there is another piece of tech that may complement your lifestyle.

I am very practical, so I look at some of the latest tech and decide if it is actually going to make my life easier. If it isn’t, then why buy it?

The tech majors are always releasing new gadgets, many of which I find quickly become redundant, but as we move into another year, I am seeing some clear purchasing trends following the year of the wireless home network.

With the roll-out of the NBN nearing completion, many households now have a good bandwidth to stream movies and music to their devices in the home.

I have lost count of how many smart TVs, entertainment systems, tablets, phones and computers I’ve connected with each other through the wireless home network.

Many have been buying Google Home, and Alexa by Amazon, so you can talk to your tech and they will either answer or activate a device for you.

Every year there are leaps and bounds in this technology. Another option is a

sound bar that complements your smart TV, and you can use it as a separate speaker and play music wirelessly from your computer.

I have also seen a shift in purchasing patterns. Instead of purchasing a CD to listen to music, you can subscribe to a music aggregator like Spotify or Apple Music and have access to millions of songs for a low monthly fee.

Or, instead of renting a DVD, you can subscribe to Netflix or Stan and once again have access to thousands of movies for a low monthly fee.

Gone are the days of the DVD collections as we stream entertainment into our households and direct to our Smart TVs, tablets or wireless devices.

If you are looking for some new tech to try and have fast internet in your home, I would suggest purchasing a wireless speaker, or consider upgrading to a smart TV and trial one of these services and see if it fits your lifestyle.

If you’re not quite a movie or music buff and still sit at your computer to read your emails, I would suggest looking at one of the many tablets on the market, so you can shift your email viewing experience from the study to the more comfortable

couch.

If you are in the market for some new tech, the internet is your oyster.

Do some research online, look for reviews, product comparisons, and even compare prices at online stores.

This a fascinating story of untold wealth, power, manipulation and a narcissist who thought he was descended from a Roman god and would have everlasting life. Oh, and for good measure, had a lust for women which started during adolescence. With five marriages, five children and five divorces, children hardly being seen by their father, and another three turning up in California later in life, it’s a Hollywood director’s dream.

The Mafia is thrown in for good measure – and it all came from some li’l old oil found in the Oklahoma boom of 1903.

And it’s all true.

I found this Getty dynasty biography interesting but not enjoyable. The principal character J. P. Getty, the richest man in the world, is an egocentric sex-obsessed, mean, spiteful, money grubbing financial wizard who destroys the lives of most of his wives, children and grandchildren. His relationship with his family is totally dysfunctional.

He is so cold and mean, he allows the Italian Mafia to torture his grandson rather than pay the initial ransom.

He certainly lives up to the saying “It is easier for a camel to pass TONY HARRINGTON through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God”.

Read this book and you will learn lessons on how not to live your life.

BOOK review JOHN KLEINSCHMIDT In the words of the author, J. Paul Getty left his family “too much money, a tangle of troubles and a legacy of broken lives”. How Getty made his money was a combination of luck and exceptional business skills and that makes interesting reading. However, he must surely qualify as one of the most blatant womanisers and worst husbands in the world and among the top echelon of worst fathers of all time, making the story around his family at best distressing. Despite the advantages of immense inherited wealth succeeding generations struggled for fulfilment and happiness in life with almost none of them reaching that goal.

Not an enjoyable read.

The oil tycoon who created the greatest fortune in America came close to destroying his own family in the process.

This warts-and-all family biography looks at how J. Paul Getty’s enormous wealth – $4 billion divided among 19 heirs – played havoc with his family. It is also a Ridley Scott movie starring Michelle Williams and Christopher Plummer.

Scenes had to be re-shot when Kevin Spacey was withdrawn from the lead.

Jean Paul Getty - the richest man in the world ? Really?

Well it all depends on what you value and what you believe makes you rich. I believe the author has done very well in showing that he was a man lacking in empathy plus emotionally empty.

This book makes interesting reading in telling the story of a family that had it all but had nothing. I have to say it is not for everybody although an interesting read, and well written.

JPG was a man whose whole focus was making money, avoiding tax, chasing women - he married five times. His interest in his children was limited. Even when his son was kidnapped and he could of paid the ransom he refused because it was against his principles. Hateful man!

MARY BARBER The biographer John Pearson injects his opinion and reflections here and there, but mostly this is a straight tale of the Getty family.

With so many people involved the author has obviously had to leave some stories out.

The real-life drama around the kidnapping of 16-year-old Jean Paul Getty III was a particularly interesting part. The book has drug addiction, alcohol, hopelessness and redemption.

It also has a generous smattering of public figures and film stars, including Mick Jagger.

Although it took a while for me to get into it, I did enjoy the book as the stories unfolded. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes biographies or recent history.

What a fascinating and painstakingly researched account into the life and loves of J Paul Getty – full family tree in the front and 14 pages in the index at the back.

No doubt about the facts!

Money certainly did not make this man happy – quite the opposite with obsessive frugality, five marriages, five divorces and an absolute lack of paternal love, even attention, towards any of his young offspring.

I found this book depressing for the first half and after that fascinating as the story took on the persona of a soap opera, unfortunately factual! We had the lot – kidnapping, AIDS victim turned activator, famous names on most pages and morbidity due to drugs and depression.

There were times when I felt like flinging All the Money in the World … but it was worth persevering – if only for the chance to count one’s own blessings!

It was a sobering account of one man’s sad existence despite his unimaginable wealth. Check out his photo on Google – not even the hint of a smile!

Training can help get the best out of your 4WD Four-wheel driving on a sandy beach is an acquired skill but one you are never too old to learn. BRUCE McMAHON suggests adding it to your must-do list.

M

oreton Island is one of southeast Queensland’s prized treasures.

Sitting just off Brisbane, the world’s third-largest sand island is, for the most part, a sub-tropical garden surrounded by clear waters, blue and green.

And while Moreton is an easy, less than two-hour ferry ride out of the capital, it is an old school four-wheel drive place best tackled in a machine with high and low range capabilities.

There’s no bitumen. There are patches where even the best mobile phone services won’t work. There’s no mechanical repair shop.

The island is an 8 out of 10 four-wheel drive experience, not so much for degrees of difficulty as for the combination of great adventuring and the natural, unreconstructed beauty of the place.

Yet some sand-driving skills are needed and that’s where Isuzu owners, new and old, have a ready-made advantage through the company’s I-Venture Club.

The club runs regular 4WD training and expeditions around the country; in Queensland the one-day courses are held on Moreton Island.

No-one’s ever too old to learn

That fee covers the barge, vehicle permit for the island, breakfast plus lunch and afternoon nibbles.

It’s a bargain considering the logistics and the clear and straight-forward advices offered by the clear and straight-

talking David Wilson.

Plus there are his instructions – in trickier spots – relayed over two-way radios fitted to each vehicle and calming the most nervous of newbies.

Last time out Rebecca and Wendy Nelson (mother and daughter) “learnt lots” in their MU-X, even while they’d driven on sand before.

“But here you learn so much more stuff, I’d highly recommend it,” says Rebecca.

It was young Josh Bennett’s first foray on sand plus he was keen to see how modifications on his D-Max ute would work out.

The bonus, Josh said, was being able to learn all this in a safe and controlled environment with others, and an expert four-wheel driver, on hand.

Keeping the income stream flowing The financial industry can be overwhelming when someone starts talking about market-linked investments and the effect of someone sneezing in the White House or hiccupping in the mining sector, writes NARELLE COOPER.

I

am just going to play the nice guy (or girl) here and help you feel a little better by saying it has nothing to do with intelligence or that feeling that things are getting harder to understand as time goes by.

Mostly, it is that it just doesn’t interest us … like understanding how the computer works.

However, there are those who do understand the markets and have chosen to do it themselves and manage their own superannuation funds.

Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (or SMSF) are a wonderful product, offering investment flexibility and a higher level of control than more traditional “managed” super products.

Now, transition these SMSFs into an “income stream” and the paperwork for Centrelink just got a little more complicated for trustees/owners.

Each year an accountant is required to

complete annual tax returns and audits for SMSFs. Producing an income stream schedule was just part of the process. This schedule must be sent to Centrelink by December 31.

For those with managed super income stream (or allocated pension) products, Centrelink now updates its records directly from the investment company and the pensioner can rest easy knowing that big brother has it sorted.

Centrelink has updated income stream superannuation products in July/August each year. From 2019, Centrelink will request this information twice a year, August and February.

Because of this link between Centrelink and investment companies many owners of managed income stream products will not notice. At the moment, Centrelink is not going to ask for a February update from a SMSF. Phew!

However, say your age pension is

under the assets test and the value of your SMSF has dropped following the sneezing and hiccups of the share markets OR you make a lump sum withdrawal. To get an income schedule to update Centrelink, may mean going back to your accountant.

If you do not want the additional expense of engaging your accountant, then Centrelink has a form for this purpose – the details of income stream product form SA330.1807 (only 12 pages) OR we can help simplify the process to a one-page

document completed by the owner/ trustee as and when required.

NEW VILLAGE CONTRACTS ARE ON THE WAY SIGNIFICANT changes to pre-contractual disclosure are designed to increase the information for and understanding of purchasers prior to committing to purchase of retirement living accommodation.

The main new mandatory documents that replace the current Public Information Documents are the Village Comparison Document, and the Prospective Costs Document.

They ensure greater clarity of the costs payable by purchasers on entry, during occupation, and on exit from the retirement village. Also introduced is a 21-day cooling off period (up from the usual 14 days) though this can be waived down to seven days with legal advice, using the specified form. There is greater certainty about the costs of reinstatement or refurbishment on exit.

Condition reports must be provided

by the village operator, on entry, and within 14 days of exit. The retirement village industry is booming, and with the demographics of the Baby Boomers, and people living longer, this industry will only increase in size and scope.

The new provisions are intended to provide greater understanding and comfort for those moving into that phase of their lives. They are also likely to be of assistance to the family of elderly people looking at retirement living options.

While the Village Comparison Document and Prospective Costs Document are mandatory, there remains a myriad of other legal and financial aspects that will vary from retirement village contract to contract, and from operator to operator, so expert legal advice on any contract is essential for any prospective purchase.

here are some foods that really donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help your stress levels. Here are some foods that are guilty of elevating stress.

Caffeine â&#x20AC;&#x201C; This doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean you have to give up your morning cup of coffee, but if you constantly have a cup on the go then it could be increasing your stress levels.

Caffeine is a stimulant, which can result in a steep rise in blood pressure and a rapid heartbeat. It can also dehydrate you, leaving you with headaches.

Alcohol â&#x20AC;&#x201C; You might think a nice drink will help you relax, but the truth is that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s feeding your stress. Again, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stimulating the production of stress hormones and the two feed off each other. It can also interfere with sleep.

Refined sugars â&#x20AC;&#x201C; There are no nutrients in sugary foods. They are what we refer to as dead foods. They are designed to taste good and hook you â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which they do very well. As delicious as they may be, you can expect mood swings and sugar crashes following the highs.

Sweets â&#x20AC;&#x201C; We all love baking and when we hit the coffee shop and spot an iced donut looking back up at us it can be difficult to resist. Because they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t contain fibre, the sugar burns quickly, increasing your glucose levels and boosting your stress. Sugar needs a fibre friend to allow for a slow burn.

Potato Chips â&#x20AC;&#x201C; If you think youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re good because you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a sweet tooth â&#x20AC;&#x201C; think again. Potato chips are packed with trans fats which is the one type of fat you should exclude from your diet altogether.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s guilty of increasing belly fat. They are simple carbs, which means they provide a mood boost and a major crash.

Deep fried foods â&#x20AC;&#x201C; During the holiday season the temptation to indulge in deep-fried foods is overwhelming. They are packed with trans fats, carbs, and are going to fuel a fatty stomach and increase your risk of depression while theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re at it.

Ice cream â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Is there anything more comforting than ice cream when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve

Trans fats â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Trans fats are a giant no-no. They arrived in the 1950s, suddenly finding a home in boxed baked books, fried foods, and even margarine. As well as increasing your risk of depression, they are guilty of clogging your arteries thus increasing your risk of stroke and heart attack. The Mediterranean diet is a healthy option and has no trans fats whatsoever.

Fruit Juice â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Why is fruit juice so bad for you? Fibre. The fibre allows you to process the sugar slowly, but when you drink it in a juice, it creates such a spike in your blood sugar that cortisol floods your system and it can induce a panic attack.

So, these are the types of foods that will exacerbate your stress levels, but some foods have the opposite effect and can actually help reduce stress levels Magnesium â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Is known to help alleviate fatigue and irritability which often accompany chronic stress. Sunflower seeds, flax and pumpkin seeds are good sources of this key mineral.

Avocado â&#x20AC;&#x201C; This healthy fat helps you beat stress. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s packed with folate, vitamins B and E, and beta-carotene.

Berries â&#x20AC;&#x201C; You can get plenty of vitamin C from a berry hit. Vitamin C is seriously helpful when it comes to beating stress.

Fatty fish â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Salmon, tuna, and other fatty fish contain omega-3 fatty acids that have anti-inflammatory properties to counteract the negative effects of stress hormones, adrenaline, and cortisol.

Cashews â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Nuts are great for a healthy snack. They are full of protein and healthy fats, and are an excellent source of zinc.

AS a woman ages, her body undergoes changes that can sometimes cause a variety of issues.

These include stress incontinence, painful intercourse, vaginal irritation or dryness or vaginal laxity.

Key findings in the report of relevance to Queensland were: • The majority of older Australians feel younger than their current age, with more than half feeling at least 10 years younger.

• Women feel 12 years younger than their actual age, whereas men feel 10 years younger on average.

• On average, those aged 80-89 feel 13 years younger than their age.

• Of survey participants 78 per cent rated their quality of life highly, at 7 or more out of 10, including a quarter who feel particularly positive, 26 per cent rated their quality of life a 9 or 10.

• Just over one in five rated their quality of life at the mediocre or poor end of the scale, with 7 per cent giving a rating of just 0-4.

COTA is seeking a commitment from all political parties to develop a comprehensive long-term national strategy to address the needs of older Australians – including raising rent assistance by 40 per cent; taking a whole-of-government approach to budget funding; and reducing ageism, particularly age discrimination in the workplace.

Issues investigated included employment, age discrimination, cost of living, financial security, health, home and aged care, housing, later life planning, consumer rights and transport.

REPORT SURVEYS STATE OF THE OLDER NATION THE Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland is calling for greater focus on older person’s health and wellbeing, in response to a new landmark national report launched in Canberra.

The State of the (Older) Nation 2018 Report is the most comprehensive national study ever undertaken to seek the views of Australians aged over 50.

COTA Queensland chief executive Mark Tucker-Evans said the report highlighted the need for older people to not only be valued but to feel valued.

Support systems need to in pace for those who are at risk or are vulnerable, and to have adequate access to health and mental health services in Queensland.

“While the report shows that a high percentage of people rated their quality

of life highly, seven per cent rated their lives as mediocre citing health, financial, and negative emotional issues as the top three contributors,” he said.

Today most Queenslanders can expect to live into their 80s and some, beyond.

Longer life provides the opportunity to reconsider not only what older age might be but how our whole lives might unfold.

Yet the extent of the opportunities that arise from these extra years of life will be very heavily dependent on one key factor: health.

“If people are experiencing these years in good health their ability to do things that matter to them will be little different from that of a younger person, Mr Tucker-Evans said.

GALAPAGOS DUCK COMES TO CALOUNDRA

ONE of Australia’s best known jazz bands, Galapagos Duck is coming to the Sunshine Coast this month for a Sunshine Coast Jazz Club session.

The band began in the late 1960s when members were playing a winter season at the NSW skiing resort The Kosciusko Chalet at Charlottes Pass.

After returning to Sydney, they continued working together and established themselves on the Australian jazz and music scene during the 1970s.

It was the house band at the emerging jazz night club The Basement, near Circular Quay.

The band continues to work in concert halls, night clubs and jazz festivals as well

as in the recording studio and on radio and television.

Although the membership has changed over the years, the direction remains the same – creating a jazz performance experience that can be enjoyed by everybody.

OLD RASCALS RIDE AGAIN

OLD favourites Michael Caine and Jim Broadbent star in the true crime film King of Thieves, about four men in their 60s and 70s, who pull off a major heist in London’s jewellery district in 2015.

Based on the infamous true events, what starts as their last criminal hurrah quickly turns into a nightmare driven by greed.

A famous thief in his younger years, 77-year-old widower Brian Reader (Michael Caine), pulls together a band of criminals to plot an unprecedented burglary at the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit.

The thieves employ their old-school skills to plan the heist over the Easter holiday weekend. Posing as servicemen, they enter the deposit, neutralise the alarms, and proceed to drill a hole into the wall of the safe. Two days later, they escape with allegedly more than £200 million in jewels and cash.

When the police investigation starts, the cracks begin to show as they row over how to share the goods and become increasingly distrustful of each other. The crime has become public knowledge, and a frenzy of speculation begins, captivating the British public and the world media.

Experts add knowledge and passion to bespoke tours Recent research identified that Baby Boomers and beyond are looking for more than a holiday when they travel. DOT WHITTINGTON talks to three tour organisers who are catering specifically for special interests.

aby Boomers are inveterate travellers and for many, a whistlestop tour of picture postcard scenes is no longer enough. There’s a real desire to get to know more about the world around us.

University of Queensland researcher Dr Lintje Siehoyono Sie last month revealed that older travellers who engaged in positive and meaningful travels were most likely to recall memorable experiences.

Her findings suggest that there’s a shift from relaxing getaways to deeper cultural experiences – and what better way to achieve that than by combining an existing interest with travel?

That’s just what tour leaders Dominque Rizzo (food, wine and cooking), Penny Hegarty (gardening) and Jennifer Parish and Stewart Cameron (music) are doing.

All are experts in their chosen field and are turning a tour into a deeper experience, whether it’s a cooking class in Sicily, buying orchids in Singapore or a night at the opera in Italy.

What they have in common is that

they all lead bespoke small groups that cover everything along the way, so travellers can get under the skin of a destination without having to worry about annoying details.

“All you have to worry about is what to wear,” says Dominque.

As Jennifer puts it, “These are not ‘follow the spotted umbrella’ sort of tours.

No early morning rushing to jump on the coach for endless days of whistle-stops.”

And Penny adds, “It’s about making it easy, pay and pack. This isn’t 44 people on each of three buses descending on a small village hotel at the same time for the dogfight over rooms.”

Instead, it means travelling like a group of friends who are able to tap into expert knowledge while getting a well-rounded experience, or “total immersion” as Dominque calls it.

And by keeping groups small, they often access boutique venues, restaurants and galleries not available to large groups.

All are passionate about travel and experts in their field and have managed to bring the two together to create something different and special.

Girls On Tour

While they find specialist tours have particular appeal to single women who are looking for secure solo travel, many couples also sign up to do things the easy way – the tour you take when you don’t want a group tour.

Similarly, those over 70 also enjoy the security and convenience of small group specialist tours.

As Jennifer puts it, “Baby Boomers seem very happy to have someone do the leg work and present wonderful experiences for them to enjoy. And why not?”.

Dominque’s food, wine and cultural tour guests are also mainly aged 50 to 70-plus and Penny’s gardeners are a similar demographic.

Dominique was born in Brisbane to an Australian mother and Sicilian father, so has a personal connection with the food and culture of Sicily, as they often returned to her father’s homeland during her childhood.

“My memories are embedded with images of Sicily’s rustic peasant landscape,” she says. “The memorable raw elements of riding in open air trucks, the smell of horses, chickens and rabbits running freely, bountiful orchards of lemons and oranges, and collecting fresh seasonal garden vegetables.”

She now brings her fresh culinary style to her Brisbane restaurant Putia Pure Food Kitchen in Banyo, to regular cookery classes, and to the pages of her cookbook My Taste of Sicily.

Her Sicily tours are a combination of cookery classes, unearthing the local cuisine and learning about the island’s history and culture.

“I loved watching my uncle prepare the pigs for the bleed and use every part of the animal – the coiling of pork sausages, then piercing them with sticks ready for the grill; constant farm to table encounters; rolling the polpete; stirring

the pasta; and picking wild greens, fennel and broad beans,” she says.

Tours find a balance of this local life, a collection of little known places and activities, with popular tourist sights. Her memories combined with family connections, means guests get “complete immersion”.

“Although my focus is on food, we also cover history, art and heritage sites so people can get deeper into the country and meet the locals. I’m well qualified to do this in Sicily,” she says.

“And if you want to know more about the Mediterranean diet, you can do it first hand, cooking with the locals and picking up the tips. No previous skills are required.”

From making salami in the mountains to cooking fresh fish on the coast; staying in ancient convents to five-star hotels; riding Vespers to a small boat trip to the islands, everything is covered – with Italian lessons thrown in along the way.

Each tour offers a balanced itinerary combining food sourcing and activities, hands-on cooking classes; local food market visits; cheese and wine tastings; and farm tours and vineyard lunches.

Jennifer Parish and Stewart Cameron are both opera singers. They met in Brisbane in 1993 when they were both singing with the Queensland Pops Orchestra. A year later, they launched the OPERATIF! performance company.

are hard to find or access on your own.

“Securing good seats to performances overseas can be very tricky,” Jennifer says.

“We take a lot of time to forge good relationships with venues and box offices so we know we can always get good seats at the La Scala Opera House for example.”

As performers, they know how to pace an audience experience.

“We’ve always allowed space and time to absorb what’s going on,” she says.

“Whether it’s for listening to a performance or embarking on a trip of a lifetime, it’s a similar process. There needs to be variety, high-points, downtime.

“I guess we design our tours the way we like to travel,” she says.

Penny Hegarty is a horticulturist, so for her guests that means not just trips to hidden gardens, but also useful advice from what will grow at home to customs regulations on seeds and cuttings.

“In Singapore you can buy orchid vials and bring them back. Between us we can buy different varieties and have a potting session and swap them when we get back,” she says.

“I can say, ‘don’t get that it won’t grow where you live’, and I know just what we can and can’t get through Customs. Along the way, we can also discuss their gardens at home and I can help with general gardening advice.”

She had been working as a tour director for a garden club leading tours mainly in Australia. Then, on a private trip to New Zealand, some of the members asked her if she was taking a tour there.

She wasn’t but she gave it some thought, put her first tour together 15 years ago and the rest is history.

“I love travelling and I love gardening, so it’s a perfect combination,” she says.

Her formula obviously works. Three travellers have now been with her on seven tours.

“Most tours are mainly people with an interest in gardening, but they come from all professional backgrounds,” she says.

“These are people who want a holiday in a small group and to be well looked after.”

She has just arrived back from China where as well as beautiful gardens off the beaten track, the group also visited the

major sights, such as the Terracotta Warriors.

“While I choose destinations with gardens in mind, we also get into the culture and history through the garden and visit everything you would expect to see on a general itinerary,” she says.

The China trip was autumn to see the native maples in their full glorious colours, but it was also the right time for picking the chrysanthemums for tea making.

“We went to a tea plantation and saw them growing, being picked and dried and then sampled the tea,” she says.

Next year, she plans to return to Japan for the cherry blossoms, her favourite time of year.

London’s famous Chelsea Flower Show and Monet’s Garden outside Paris are also on her itineraries.

“Monet’s garden was stunning. I’ve been there three times and only once caught the wisterias in flower on the bridge,” she says.

Like the others, her tours are about personal service and satisfaction.

“I have a big garden so before we go I open it up for morning tea and to answer last minute questions and get everything in order before we depart,” she says.

I

t’s that time of year again when both locals and tourists get the chance to take a walk on the wild side with the Swiss national dog, some of which have achieved worldwide fame as movie stars, starred in a host of advertisements and featured on postage stamps.

Every weekend from the end of December until the end of February, the Barry Foundation – based in Martigny, Switzerland – organises leisurely walks accompanied by Saint Bernard dogs in the mountain village of Champex-Lac. The 90-minute walks take dog lovers around the idyllic, snow-covered alpine lake, with participants taking it in turns to hold the Saint Bernards on a lead.

“As long ago as in historical times, the St Bernards used to pull carts. This remains a very suitable activity for the dogs, even today,” says Manuel Gaillard, who is in charge of the dogs.

Ideally, the walk should be combined with a visit to the St Bernard museum, which is the only one of its kind in Switzerland and tells the story of the dogs, the Great Saint Bernard Pass and hospice.

“The museum in Martigny is open every

day. Visitors can find out more about the history of the hospice dogs and meet other dogs from our breeding kennels,” says Rudolph Thomann, managing director the Barry Foundation.

As owner of the breeding kennels, the foundation is responsible for the continued management of the 300-year-old breed and the preservation of the special type of hospice St Bernard.

The Barry Foundation is named after the legendary Barry, who lived at the hospice from 1800 to 1812 and is considered the most famous of all the dogs who ever provided rescue services on the Great Saint Bernard Pass. He saved the lives of more than 40 people.The many legends surrounding his name greatly contributed to the St Bernard’s reputation.

As a result, there is always a dog named Barry at the hospice, which was founded by monks in the 11th century as a refuge for travellers and pilgrims on the 2469m Great Saint Bernard Pass. For centuries it was an important traffic route between the economic centres of northern Italy and North West Europe – and for pilgrims on their Via Francigena route to Rome.

Large mountain dogs have been kept at the hospice since the mid-17th century to guard and protect those staying there. The St Bernards were rapidly adopted as companion dogs and above all, as rescue dogs for travellers who lost their way in the snow and mist.

The reputation of the Saint Bernards (then called Barry dogs) grew throughout Europe in the 19th century, thanks to chronicles published in many languages and to reports passed on by word of mouth by the soldiers who had crossed the pass with Napoleon in 1800. The legendary Barry became the archetype of the rescue dog.

Today, St Bernards no longer play a key role in mountain rescues. Helicopters and faster, smaller dogs get to the scene much quicker.
