Nevertheless, I am now making a more concerted effort to keep up physical activity and have even been spotted lifting weights in a gym of late.

That’s mainly because of the fear that comes with an impending milestone birthday. But it doesn’t have to be all bad, and as Russell Hunter writes this issue, it really is a case of use it or lose it.

I’m always looking for an easy way out though and that just could be all the walking that comes with a holiday, so I’m off to Central America for a few weeks and planning to celebrate the above-mentioned birthday in Cuba with a friend of similar vintage.

We are heading off on a wing and a prayer; two “old girls� following their noses around Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Havana, the Panama Canal and the jungles of Costa Rica. Plans are flimsy and despite a few “what on earth are we thinking?� moments, we figure adrenaline will make the memories. So as I sip a celebratory 60th mojito in the land of Fidel Castro, I shall just be grateful that I have made it thus far.

have never been much of a one for gyms, but over the years have made regular forays into the field of fitness, none of them ever being a source of any great pleasure.

From memory, the worst attempt was when I decided to join some sort of jazz dance class. There I was, lined up with all the lycra-clad bunnies, trying desperately to keep in step, when I hurled myself right instead of left and sent them all flying like a row of skittles. “I’m left-handed,� was my excuse. “I have trouble deciding between right and left on my feet.� Which at that stage, they weren’t.

When my son’s petite ballet dancer girlfriend suggested I join one of her dance fitness classes recently, I gently explained that she had no idea of the

t’s becoming a cliché, but like all clichés, there’s some truth there: fitness is not only about adding years to your life, it’s about adding life to your years.

If you had a personal best, you’re not going to reproduce it in your twilight years. The best, longest, fastest, heaviest and highest are going to stay right where they are – in the past.

But that doesn’t mean the

55-plus are, or should be, mere onlookers in the world of exercise.

And the fitness industry hasn’t been at all slow to catch on and catch up.

A Google search will bring up page after page of gyms and fitness programs tailored to the over-55s – everything from miracle cures to the elixir of life.

Don’t be fooled.

There’s no easy way to get

the heart beating slower and the lungs working more efficiently. All involve effort of some sort.

The most popular is walking. It’s free and mostly pleasurable, but with so many of us time-challenged in what should be our resting years, there are all manner of options for getting fit and, more importantly, staying that way.

Most fitness experts seem to

agree that 150 minutes of exercise a week is important for seniors who, probably without being aware of it, have been living in deteriorating bodies since their mid-30s.

Brisbane City Council offers a free membership seniors centre. The 50 Plus Centre is open Monday to Friday in the basement of the City Hall in Adelaide Street and offers a huge range of low cost activities that include gentle exercise, ballroom and line dancing, yoga and many other ways to help keep you fit.

You will be asked for proof of age such as a driving licence or pension card. Call the council and ask.

Or Google ‘exercise for seniors Sunshine Coast’ or ‘exercise for seniors Brisbane’ to find a host of options. Most involve a fee, so don’t be shy to ask.

Your Time asked a couple of reputable providers what seniors can do to protect and improve their wellbeing.

Going to the gym, surprisingly perhaps, topped no lists although it wasn’t ruled out either.

Ruth Reinhard of Brisbanebased Health Thru Fitness is a comparative latecomer to the fitness industry who has definite views about the need to stay active in later years. Made redundant at age 57 from the

Queensland public service, she contemplated her future and decided to take control – something she strongly advocates for the seniors who now attend her individual sessions and group classes.

“Any movement is better than no movement,” she says.

“Over 55s, especially over 60s, find their lives revolve around the house, the kids, perhaps the grandkids – who tend to keep them at least slightly active.”

“Gyms can seem daunting to seniors. They’re seen as the domain of the young.”

But they probably need to do more.

“It starts with wellbeing,” says Ms Reinhard. “Of course you can take the dog for walks but the dog needs to stop for piddle, a sniff around.

“Really, you need a goal. I, for example, run classes for those with a goal.”

He suggests that people seeking enhanced wellbeing should start with something easy. “Walking is a good way to start and build confidence from there. Or ride a bike” he says.

“Gyms can seem daunting to seniors. They’re seen as the domain of the young. Of course that needn’t deter them but they probably need to have that basic confidence that exercise outside the gym can give them.”

But, as Ruth Reinhard points out, there’s also an emotional side to exercise, particularly among the over 55s.

She finds her own attendees (she’s now learning to teach – if that’s the word – Pilates) return not only for exercise but for companionship.

“Music plays a vital role for us. It enhances the mood, and while I realise that not everybody is a morning person, morning is a good time to exercise mind and body. I see them making new friends, which is also part of their wellbeing journey,” she says. “It’s healthy.”

And a vital part of her mission, as she sees it, is to keep older people out of nursing homes, although she agrees that many are extremely well run and are becoming progressive in terms of exercise.

“Exercise keeps people out of institutions and helps them take control of their own lives,” she says. “Exercise for seniors should be as important as sleeping.”

And as our bodies age, we can prepare through fitness and

health for any shocks the years may have in store for us.

Ruth Reinhard’s clients include doctors, who she says, have, like others, decided they need to be prepared for any health shocks their bodies may throw at them in their later years. But again, goals are important.

“We need something to measure ourselves against,” she says. “We need to set targets for ourselves. What we can do is give options but there needs to be that will.”

Rob Hubert Robert Hubert also wants us to challenge ourselves.

“The quicker the walk, the better,” he says. “Put on a pedometer and, as confidence builds, take on some hills, walk on the beach in heavier sand.”

It’s all about the joints, he says, which can and frequently do, show signs of wear and tear

as we age.

“Be careful of joint degradation,” he says. “Cartilage damage, back pain, knees, ribs. If there is injury there it can bring on weight gain through inactivity.

“Movement is good for older people. The more the better. It really is a case of use it or lose it”.

So when should seniors head to the gym?

“They’ll likely need a gym for weight bearing exercise that will maintain bone and muscle mass, once they’ve built the confidence, they need to take that next step.”

For both, though, it’s about making a difference in people’s lives.

“Our generation didn’t have gyms,” says Ms Reinhard. “Many of us come from single income families and we were closer to the food sources than we are today. But we can even now put fitness up there on our list of vital things to do.

“If people can give us their goals – and it’s not always weight – we can give them the tools they need to achieve them.”

And seniors are an emerging, if still under-serviced, market for the fitness industry, explains Robert Hubert.

“Unfortunately, the fitness industry tends to be run by younger people who tend to focus on their own group.”

He sees no evidence – yet – of a specialist sector emerging.

But people such as himself and Ruth Reinhard are testament to a growing demand that will surely find a supply.

FIVE MYTHS about exercise and ageing Myth 1: There’s no point to exercising. I’m going to get old anyway.

Fact: Exercise and strength training helps you look and feel younger and stay active longer.

Regular physical activity lowers your risk for a variety of conditions, including Alzheimer’s and dementia, heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, high blood pressure, and obesity. Not only can exercise help stem the decline in strength and vitality that comes with age, it even improve it. And the mood benefits of exercise can be just as great at 70 or 80 as they were at 20 or 30.

Myth 2: Older people shouldn’t exercise. They should save their strength and rest.

Fact: Research shows that a sedentary lifestyle is unhealthy for adults over 50. Inactivity often causes older adults to lose the ability to do things on their own and can lead to more hospitalisations, doctor visits, and use of medicines for illnesses.

Myth 3: Exercise puts me at risk of falling down.

Fact: Regular exercise, by building strength and stamina, prevents loss of bone mass and improves balance, actually reducing your risk of falling.

Myth 4: It’s too late. I’m already too old to start exercising.

Fact: You’re never too old to start exercising and improve your health! In fact, adults who

take up exercise later in life often show greater physical and mental improvements than their younger counterparts. If you’ve never exercised before, or it’s been a while, you won’t be encumbered by the same sports injuries that many regular exercisers experience in later life. In other words, there aren’t as many miles on your clock so you’ll quickly start reaping the rewards. Just begin with gentle activities and build up from there.

Myth 5: I’m disabled. I can’t exercise sitting down.

Fact: Chair-bound people face special challenges but can lift light weights, stretch and do chair aerobics, chair yoga, and chair Tai Chi to increase range of motion, improve muscle tone and flexibility, and promote cardiovascular health. Many swimming pools offer access to wheelchair users and there are adaptive exercise programs for wheelchair sports such as basketball.

Telstra calling at a premium

C

onsumers are paying up to a 92 per cent price premium to access Telstra’s troubled network, which has experienced seven major outages in the past six months.

Consumer group Choice analysed 280 telco products to see how much more Telstra customers were being charged when compared to equivalent or better offerings by other companies.

Of these, 53 like-for-like comparisons could be made with Telstra products with premiums on the majority of these ranging from 6 per cent to 92 per cent.

“There’s only so much free data Telstra can offer before they have to admit their network is failing on a fairly regular basis and its promised premium network is a thing of the past,” Choice spokesman Tom Godfrey said.

“With outages affecting pre-and post-paid mobile voice and data services, as well as broadband internet connections, it has become clear the Telstra tax being charged to access its network is not deserved.”

He said that by its own admission, Telstra claimed its real point of difference wasn’t data limits or cost, but network quality yet six months of network outages would suggest Telstra was a long way from offering a quality network.

“Although Telstra now claims to be investing millions to fix its failing network, this is too little too late for consumers trapped in fixed term contracts that are not getting the premium service they signed up for,” Mr Godfrey said.

“If you are trapped in a fixed term Telstra contract and are tired of the free data for a failing service, log your outages, record your loss and take the fight up to Telstra to get out of your contract without penalty.”

THERE’S some good news if you are fed up with forking out for new pantyhose – consumer group Choice has spot-tested 10 popular brands ranging from $6 to $75, and found the cheapest were top of the ladder.

“When it comes to laddering, the price of tights does not determine performance,” said Choice’s Kate Browne.

“One of the least expensive products we tested, Clio Super Soft 3-pack available from supermarkets, only cost $10, or $3.30 a pair, and were more durable than a $75 pair of Wolford’s.”

With Australians spending almost $600 million in hosiery in 2015, it pays to know where you stand when it comes to durability.

The tights test was conducted by RMIT’s Textile Testing Services, which specialises in laddering resistance testing.

“It’s incredibly frustrating when you buy a new pair of tights, carefully slip one foot in and then the next, only to find that once you pull them up they’ve already laddered,” Ms Browne said.

“With laddering a common bugbear, it’s great to see a number of affordable options performing well.”

Ten brands were tested and ranked.

Bonds Comfy Tops ($7.20), Razzamatazz Perfectly Matte ($7.20), Mix Basic 3-pack ($10), and Voodoo Lavish ($19.95) were also top performers.

LIKE to check up on something online before you buy? Then it’s good news as guidelines are being set for websites with consumer reviews.

The International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN) relates to those involved in the collection, moderation and publication of online reviews and endorsements.

Global enforcers have found that online reviews and endorsements are proving useful to consumers when, for example, booking travel accommodation and other related products and services.

It is important that consumers can trust the reviews and endorsements they use to help make these buying decisions.

“Consumers rely upon online reviews when make purchasing decisions and it is crucial that reviews are honest and represent the full spectrum of views,” ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said.

Review administrators will need to be equal and fair in the collection of reviews and transparent in their publication.

Traders need to ensure they don’t prevent consumers from seeing the whole picture; do not write, commission or publish fake reviews; ensure paid-for content is disclosed and ensure commercial relationships are disclosed.

Letters REGARDING your Editor’s note (July edition). I was very impressed with the segment regarding Drane Court. I am a Yandina boy by birth (1942) and lived there for 21 years. I remember Ron Drane very well and what you said was spot on.

He was not only a great artisan in the signwriting field but a genuinely nice person. Since I married in 1963 I have lived at Mons, until two years ago when my wife and I downsized to a home on Buderim. However I remember the Drane Court nonsense that went on with a few residents in that area who whinged and moaned to the council until they got their way and had it changed. Most of them were ‘blow ins’. If only they knew the background of that name they may have had second thoughts.

Having lived in Mons School Rd for over 50 years, I have found that the locals are much like the Yandina locals when I lived there – salt of the earth, community minded and friendly. We are finding this out again now as the Mons School will be celebrating its 100-year anniversary on August 6 and having spoken to numerous former students from those early days, it brings back that same warmth and sincerity that is getting harder to find these days. We are hoping this function will help re-kindle much of the temperament of those bygone days.

Congratulations for producing a magazine with such interesting and varied articles.

As a language teacher, I particularly enjoy reading David Parmiter’s “Watch Your Language” columns. Like David, I studied Latin at university and I agree wholeheartedly that it helps with your use of English.

I share David’s dismay at the misuse of the past tense of the verb “to sink”. I recently read an article about Barnaby Joyce and found the following sentence: “Last year, the ‘underdog’ sunk his teeth into Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s tiny terriers”.

As a senior citizen, I was particularly interested in David’s article (July) about language usage since World War II. As David is usually so pedantic about language use, I was rather surprised to find that he used the expression “pass on” twice within the same sentence: “Your duty is to pass on the skills and the experiences that you have acquired during your lifetime and pass them on.”

Ian Wood Social isolation of the single elderly is a reality today, especially among those with special needs or disadvantage.

Dementia and health issues impact relationships within families. There has been a great cultural shift over the past 50 years, where many families are no longer close or in contact, leaving the elderly to government assistance and resources, or to their own fate.

Many families have no intergenerational contact or community, due mainly to economic demands. The trend is for younger generations forced to work, to pay for child care, rather than depend on the old way of live-in parent helpers.

While many older family members find retirement villages and aged care their only option, it has created a thriving industry based on the incessant demand for these optional facilities. I cared for my own mother as her health and state of mind deteriorated.

However, I find that my own children have made their own lives and families and are entitled to such. I have planned to embrace retirement village living while I can still make my own decisions, with the available options of independent living, low care or high care on the same premises, without being a burden.

The world is changing. We can no longer assume younger generations will care for us in our twilight years.

My marriage broke up three years ago after 40 years. I ended up in a retirement village 10 years before my time.

The village was not only old and neglected, it was 100km from family. I spent 14 months there before managing to find a rental in a flatter area, needed for my poor mobility with osteoporosis.

I have never been so lonely in all my life. I see very little of my three children and rely on Anglicare, and Com-link to get me out. Even my car was taken away from me. I’m only 66, but feel much older.

What I lack most of all is real friends.

More than ever, everyone needs them. I will not give up, because I feel there is always another day, and there must be many others out there as lonely as I am.

We have to keep going.

His grandson Archer was born with seriously impaired hearing – and for a man whose life has been made richer through music, the idea of his grandson being denied the pleasure (not to mention never hearing any of his granddad’s many stories) was devastating and inconceivable to Barry.

“It was a shock to our family and we started considering what could be done to ensure our grandson’s future,” he says.

Then along came Hear and Say, the magical centre that helps deaf children hear and speak.

Archer received a cochlear implant and now, at 20 months old, is speaking, comprehending and making outstanding progress.

“Cochlear implant is one of Australia’s greatest inventions,” he says. “The day that Archer received his cochlear implants was the day his hearing, listening and speaking future began.”

GIVE CROQUET A TRY And now Barry wants to give back by using his talents as a speaker, author and musician to provide an afternoon’s entertainment of words and music to benefit Hear and Say. “They are 30 per cent funded by government grants and the remainder requires benefactors and donations, so they have an annual fundraiser called Loud Shirt Day,” Barry says.

“The concert at the Mooloolaba Surf Club is to help raise funds and awareness and I’m hoping everyone will wear a loud shirt on the day.”

Barry is planning an entertaining afternoon of “true-life stories, live music and inspiration”.

The 73-year-old recently wrote a one-man show using music and video and his trademark yarn-spinning to tell his life story, with songs from the ‘60s, the James Bond themes, Neil Diamond and Willie Nelson.

And his audiences love it.

“It’s about reliving the music from the times and sharing those memories with other

MEET THE AUTHOR IAN Mansfield was serving in the Australian Army when he was selected to command a team of Australian combat engineers to go to Pakistan to train Afghan refugees in mine-clearance procedures.

In September 1991, Ian, with his wife and two young children, left Australia on a one-year assignment – and didn’t return for 20 years.

CLUB POWERS into supporting farmers

It’s a common affliction, so common that PETER RICHARDSON expects there will be plenty of members for the STML club.

S

imple though it should be to find my hat, which I routinely hang on the back of the front door, it has recently perfected a clever disappearing trick.

This has caused me many an anxious search ranging wildly from the likely to the most unlikely hiding place, only to find that it is already on my head.

It’s only a knockabout cloth bush hat that can be roughly treated and often is, but I am, or rather was, quite fond of this humble headgear, so much so that I named it Ghandi in honour of that humble hero with the respectful title “Mahatma”.

I am reminded of this when I so frequently bleat, “where’s m’hat?”

I live only a stone’s throw

from three coffee shops, and Ghandi is well known at all of them, so a few weeks ago when he wasn’t hanging on the door, and I couldn’t find him anywhere in the house, I thought I knew where to head.

No luck.

Next I checked out some other shops in the village and then the drivers of several cars in which I’d been a passenger, but again, no luck.

So Ghandi’s gone and I am left lamenting, with a choice between a rather pompouslooking panama, a tweed cap of dubious origin and several skull caps all advertising something.

Where are you, Ghandi?

My hat is not the only thing that goes missing, though. All too often I go from room to room only to find I’ve forgotten what I’ve been looking for.

And then there are the words that escape me, not to mention the names of acquaintances I meet in the street.

Now, dear Your Time reader, if by now you are nodding knowingly and perhaps a little sheepishly, you are in good company, so welcome to the STML Club.

Now, where DID I put those bifocals?

Already an enthusiastic supporter of Rural Aid Australia through the Buy a Bale drought relief program, the club is working with the local community to raise funds for a Spring Hay Run departing the Sunshine Coast on November 27. The run will benefit local communities that are doing it tough as well as the droughtstricken farmers.

The dinner, on Saturday September 24, in the CPBC function rooms in Lamerough

Terrace, Golden Beach, will feature entertainment by ARIA award winner James Blundell and a first class menu.

Tickets are available at reception at the club and all proceeds will go directly to Rural Aid Australia.

Members of the community are also invited to buy a bale of hay from $20, at the donation barrels at the club.

Caloundra Power Boat Club is also doing its bit for local farmers and has recently signed up to source all of its dairy produce from Maleny Dairies.

This means that it now sources 90 per cent of its produce from local suppliers.

In a manner of speaking Just as Professor Henry Higgins taught Eliza Doolittle how to say “no”, DAVID PARMITER finds the negative gives it all away when it comes to our speech.

Professor Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady. made them labio-dental fricatives. So instead of “th” they would say “f”.

Now, on a standard qwerty keyboard I cannot type the phonetic symbols for all the sounds in the human mouth, you will be pleased to know.

But “th” can be voiced using the voicebox in “then” or voiceless with just breath, as in “thin”.

It’s the same with “f”. If you put your top lip on your bottom teeth and breathe out it is “f” if you voice it, it becomes “v”.

So a Cockney’s dad becomes “me old farver, kno’ wot ah meeng?”

So as well as watching our language when we write and when we speak in public, we should also be mindful of how we speak, particularly radio and television presenters, newsreaders and reporters and politicians.

Clarity of diction is a vital part of effective communication. But what would they know?

The graph plotted where in the oral cavity every vowel is formed: front high (“i”), front low (“a”), back high (“u”), back low (“α”) and every vowel in between.

These are sounds, by the way, not letters so they are represented by symbols which are not all on the qwerty keyboard.

Book project founded in years of friendship

A

nn Kerr was just over four years old, when she was evacuated from the outskirts of London to the safety of the country in Devon during World War II. She wouldn’t see her parents again for years, but the experience did put her in good stead for what was to be a marvellous career and a nomadic life working in refugee camps around the world.

Her story, At a Moment’s Notice – One Nurse’s Story has now been told with the help of her good friend, Carol Brunello who lives on the Sunshine Coast.

“We met through mutual friends in London in 1963,” Carol recalls. “I was 21 and living in London on my Big Overseas Experience. We were introduced by a girl I had struck up a friendship with on the ship over and we have been friends ever since.”

She says Ann would visit their shared apartment and, being older and married, could afford to bring them cakes and all the goodies they couldn’t afford themselves.

Later, Ann and her husband moved to New Zealand where Carol was living before she came on a visit to Australia in 1968, met her Australian husband and never moved back.

Carol Brunello and Ann Kerr meet again.

Now, more than 50 years later, Ann has just returned home to Gloucestershire after her latest visit to Carol at Halcyon in Bli Bli and they have finally signed off on the book which has been seven years in the making.

“Ann’s children had always been asking her when she would tell her story so when I was visiting seven years ago, I said the same. ‘You have been telling me so many stories every time we meet. It should be written’,” Carol says.

“She replied that she would do it when I agreed to write it for her, so we started that day.”

Carol also had many tape recording and letters that Ann had sent her while on many missions over the years, which provided valuable background and, with frequent Skype calls, it all came together.

The story is chronological as Ann’s

childhood explains how she could easily adapt to an itinerant lifestyle and empathise with refugees and others affected by war.

“Her childhood during the war was lonely and one of uncertainty and she saw her parents only briefly,” Carol says. “It seemed to instil in her a wanderlust, the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. She knew what it was like not to have stability.”

An anecdote from the Ann’s childhood during the post-war years tells how her mother would buy sausage rolls, remove the meat and add vegetables to make it go further, then put jam in the pastry so they could have dessert as well.

Ann later trained as a nurse and moved to New Zealand where she met her husband Graeme. They had two children and moved back to the UK where Graeme was a medical specialist.

When the children were old enough, Ann returned to nursing. Then she met a GP who had recently returned from Africa where he had been assisting people displaced by the war between Ethiopia and Somalia.

It struck a chord and she volunteered to join groups of clinicians who travelled

at a moment’s notice to provide medical care in times of crises.

This saw her working in Somalia, Thailand, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Cambodia, Rwanda, Chechnya, East Timor, Kenya and Southern Sudan.

In between missions, she held desk jobs as a recruiting officer with the Red Cross in both Geneva and London.

“Every mission was different, most were dangerous and some conditions were primitive but Ann overcame all difficulties and managed with her great sense of dedication and humour,” Carol says. Ann was awarded the prestigious Florence Nightingale Medal and an OBE for her services to nursing.

The book also touches on the situations which created the need for aid and how aid agencies operate, endeavouring to do their best in difficult circumstances.

“It shows the courage of someone who faced each day with a positive attitude in spite of witnessing distressing sights and of being constantly in personal danger,” Carol says.

And she is already plotting her next trip to the UK to catch up again with her old friend.

When wooden packing cases reigned supreme There was a time when learning to pack fruit in wooden cases was a skill taught at school and competition was fierce, writes AUDIENNE BLYTH.

T

he fruit industry was once believed to be the future of the Sunshine Coast and from about the 1920s to the 1960s, school children in the upper primary grades were taught an essential skill – how to pack oranges in wooden cases.

Competitions were held for the best team and the best packer.

The flourishing fruit industry needed wooden cases.

Bananas, pineapples, citrus, strawberries and many other fruit and vegetables such as beans and tomatoes were once transported to market in wooden cases.

Tins of kerosene, each holding four gallons (18 litres) were delivered to the householder in wooden cases.

Bulk tea was sent in a tea chest which later became a useful household storage hold-all.

In the 1890s, Cooper Walter Lanham in Nambour advertised silky oak butter kegs to hold

Cases never went to waste.

Shelving and furniture were often made from case timber.

Those not worth reusing were made into chips with a tomahawk, ready to light the morning fire in the kitchen

stove. Case mills flourished.

Keith White of Forest Glen, Frank Cunning of Tanawha, Dick Sawrey of Forest Glen, Kuskopfs and Bartholomews of Woombye, Carter Bros and Young Bros of Palmwoods, Kentish of Buderim, George and Fred Abel at Yandina, Dynes at

Valdora and Hempsalls at Kin Kin were well known.

In the 1930s, with the banana industry at its peak, small sawmills – Adams in North Arm, Atkinsons along Cooloolabin Road, and Loves in Kiamba Road – supplied the sawn timber for cases.

Cr Jenny Mackay’s grandfather, Jim Love, recalled how farmers would come and collect the case timber, 10 cases to a bundle.

In later years, the mill made deliveries and even made up the cases.

Coulson’s Boat Service delivered sawn timber for cases to banana farmers along the Maroochy River.

Local farmer Don Hartley recalled that “a bushel and a half” sized case was made for pineapples and beans.

The latter were picked, placed into kerosene tins (modified with handles) and repacked into cases.

A “bushel and a quarter” size

case was made for bananas and weighed between 70 and 80 pounds (35kg).

To make up a banana case, a clamp was used on one end of the case to give a bulge (before nailing) and to allow for shrinkage of the fruit in transit.

Sawmillers preferred flooded gum to any other timber, even blackbutt.

Another local farmer, Ron Want, bought the sawn timber for banana cases from Dynes’ Sawmill in Valdora.

He recalls his father buying timber for banana cases from Abel Brothers. In the 1970s Ron bought the timber for strawberry boxes from Love’s Sawmill.

When cardboard cartons became readily available in the 1960s, the production of wooden cases ceased.

Wooden cases have become relics of times past and relegated to museum displays.

And now, they are even collectors’ items.

World War I seminar

T

he Caloundra Family History Research group last month hosted a successful seminar to commemorate the centenary of World War I. Sponsored by Caloundra RSL and Caloundra Community Bank, the event was opened by Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle whose wife Judy is the group’s patroness.

History enthusiasts from throughout the region, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast attended as well as many CFHRI members, to make it a full house.

The hall was decorated with poppies and there was a World War I memorabilia display.

Various items on show gave poignant reminders of personal family involvement in the “war to end all wars”.

Lee Dominick from the 5th Light Horse Regiment Maleny Troop who gave an excellent talk on The Horse and its Trooper in The Great War, also brought a wonderful array of equipment used by the troopers, as well as her own beautifully kept military saddle.

Bill Kitson, retired founder and senior curator of the Brisbane Museum of Lands, Mapping and Surveying, gave a presentation on the involvement of the Queensland surveyors who enlisted for

the conflict, some paying the ultimate sacrifice; their talented futures denied.

Helen Smith, a public health/ infectious diseases specialist spoke of the many illnesses the soldiers faced in this pre-penicillin era. Even the soldiers who were lucky enough to come home were not completely unscathed because of these illnesses. There was also the ever-present danger of a GSW (gun shot wound) in all its forms, causing what we now refer to as PTSD. Toni White, consulting genealogist to the ADF and the Unrecovered War Casualties Unit had no photos to share, just her passion in finding the living relatives of those men who lie in foreign soils, “known only to God” and waiting to be claimed by their family.

Her involvement in finding family members for DNA testing has resulted in hundreds now having a grave for family to visit.

Coincidentally, among these people at Caloundra, Toni found a family present who are now to be contacted by the ADF team and invited to attend the funeral of their relative.

In all, three groups of people present at the seminar had connections to men who died on the Western Front, for whom Toni had found families through

SUNSHINE Coast Animal Refuge Society is hoping to increase the number of cats and dogs finding homes by making its hours more accessible.

“We feel like it is hard for families to come and see and potentially adopt our cats and dogs during the week as we were closing at 4pm,” manager Penny Brischke said.

“First we started by increasing our Sunday trading hours, which has been an enormous success with 11 and six adoptions the last two Sundays respectively. Even on the Sunday when we had the weather warnings, people still came out to adopt.”

Opening hours now have been extended to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays only.

“We have seen a lot of cat adoptions which is great as we have been struggling to keep bringing in cats from the Sunshine Coast pound,” Ms Brischke said.

BANKFOOT House, the oldest surviving residence in the Glass House Mountains, provided an entertaining outing for 17 members of the Glass House Country View Club last month.

The house was established in 1868 as the lunch stop and staging post for the Cobb & Co coaches on the Brisbane to Gympie goldfields run.

Only three families ever lived there, the last owner being Jack Ferris who died in 2002 at the ripe old age of 109.

The brilliant Mary Grigor Centre, an interpretive archival centre, details the history of Bankfoot House complete with photographs and memorabilia.

The things we have to do Waiting at an airport, JANNIE REDMOND has time to contemplate the life of a FIFO worker – and his wife.

I

look up from my book club reader – this month it’s a JK Rowling novel – as absorption has been disturbed.

Two toddlers are running in circles squealing with laughter. I smile.

Two more toddlers wobble over, stumpy legs splayed and held together by the cumbersome pouch of a nappy. Both hold a parent’s hand, directed to the excitement.

There is silence as they shyly face each other, heads slightly angled with intent survey. No more than 10 seconds pass then one child gabbles away at another.

Then, as swiftly as I had looked up, they all are running together, acceptance replacing shyness and uncertainty.

What a delightful reminder of the goodness and reception of a small child.

I am at the airport on my way home after a two-night stay in a city that, put simply, is industrialised. Cast your eyes in any direction and there are tanks, chimneys and metal structures aiming for the sky. My husband is a FIFO worker.

We are struggling emotionally with the long time apart. His new contract has a Sunday off a fortnight. He works Saturday then meets me at the hotel.

Oh yes, it absolutely does feel like a

clandestine rendezvous. Hallelujah, romance is still alive after all these years.

So what is the FIFO acronym? Fly in fly out.

Companies are less likely to build a town for workers in a remote area and instead, fly staff from one of the major airports to an airport closest to the worksite.

My husband’s new roster is 28 days on, seven days off. He returns to work on his seventh day off. So why is he doing this? For the money of course. He has been a FIFO worker for 18 months.

I laughed when he told me what his accommodation was called: Donga. It’s a portable tin shed to sleep and keep belongings in for the duration of rostered work time.

Big enough to fit a single bed, a shower, toilet and basin, a desk and cupboard – this is where my husband retreats for 29 nights per swing.

He tells me a donga spills typically, a fragrant aroma of stale sweat, wet socks and tobacco butts that greets you on opening the door, leftovers from the previous inmate. I can feel myself gagging. This camp site houses 3000 workers with dongas double-stacked. It takes time to find where your room is. I

would need a GPS. He does his own laundry and has two plastic containers he was given on his first day.

I had seen a few documentaries on television about being a FIFO worker.

Due to our experience I believe a handful of workers interviewed from a vast industry are arguably minority views and have little emphasis on the emotional ramifications of this style of working.

A West Australian parliamentary inquiry looked at the mental health issues associated with FIFO workers in response to the nine apparent suicides in WA in 12 months.

Isolation, remoteness, long day or night shifts for weeks on end, cramped unwelcoming living conditions, family and friends disconnection, lack of social support, mass-produced food, and an accepted culture to be tough, is something few would want to experience.

Do their FIFO pay packets mean it is acceptable?

These workers are but a number on an identification tag and are easily replaced; fodder in the drive of multinational companies for profit.

Yes, he does get good pay but at what price? He lives with the fear of loss of his

job every day. He is a full-time employee until such time as the contract is complete. Only management know when that is. The phrase “bottom feeder” is often joked about among colleagues.

My husband’s last employer paid $19 a week superannuation to their workers.

Is that reasonable?

My mind returns back to the children at the airport.

When does a human being lose rectitude and selflessness and when do the rest of us simply shrug our shoulders and say “there is nothing we can do about it, so why bother?”

I wonder if parliamentarians and CEOs would they commit to a year of doing my husband’s job without access to entitlements. Do I sound bitter? I hope not, as this is not what I feel.

I sometimes feel frustrated and annoyed with myself that I could have chosen my career more wisely.

I have never agreed that some positions are worthy of gigantic salaries, whether film star or prime minister.

It’s all about money. Oh gosh, let’s face it. I’m greedy too.

From the supermarket car park to the Never Never Kia has come a long way since its arrival in Australia and BRUCE McMAHON finds the fourth generation Sportage is not to be easily dismissed.

I

T seems like yesterday – but it was probably the day before – that Korean carmaker Kia arrived in Australia.

It’s Korea’s oldest car business, dating back to 1944 and now part-owned by Hyundai.

In the 1980s Kia built Ford’s little Festiva and developed a fair reputation for build quality; since then Kia has driven from strength to strength with ever-improving product of its own.

Most attention in the early days of Kia here centred around the four-wheel drive Sportage.

In the 1990s this was an honest enough rival for Suzuki’s Vitara, just a bit crude by the standards of the day and it rated poorly in crash tests.

The second generation Sportage was better, if a touch frumpish in style. But it showed the Koreans were on the move and the third generation from 2010 was welcomed by buyers

and critics as a handsome and competent SUV. Today there’s a fourth generation of the Sportage to consider.

It’s a little bigger, restyled inside and out, yet more evolution than revolution in style. Some may not take to the “tiger nose” grille but there remains an eye-pleasing sleekness to the wagon’s profile.

The SUV’s wheelbase has

grown 30mm, allowing for a 40mm longer body. It’s the same height and width as the outgoing model but headroom and legroom, front and back, have been increased.

As before, there’s front-drive or all-wheel drive Sportages, petrol or diesel engines and three trim levels.

All use a six-speed automatic transmission and prices start at $28,990 for a two-wheel drive,

two-litre petrol Si model running through to a premium $45,990 for an all-wheel drive, 2.4 litre diesel Platinum version.

That’s a lot of pickled cabbage for the range-topping Platinum Sportage.

But the high-quality Platinum cabin is packed with gear and driver-assist gizmos, from those to help a driver park to systems to help stop a driver running over people.

There are warnings for wandering out of lanes and detection systems for people sneaking up into blind spots.

Not sure if some of these, common enough across the car industry today, may breed a mob of lazy, even more indifferent drivers.

We do like the Platinum’s Smart Power Tailgate which opens the tailgate automatically if the key is “sensed” close by.

And there’s much to like about how the Kia Sportage drives and handles these days; this is one crowd that

understands Australian road conditions and drivers’ tastes.

All have full-sized spare wheels.

The Kia is no sports car. It turns into corners with confidence but doesn’t like to be rushed.

The quiet and compliant ride is generally good over all manner of surfaces and with the Platinum’s all-wheel drive, road-holding up there with more expensive SUVs. There’s the ability to lock the centre diff if the track gets real nasty.

While the Platinum version here isn’t cheap the Sportage’s basic dynamic and accommodation package is solid across all models.

Many may find a Sportage to suit back down the range – allwheel drive diesel Platinum versions are more suited to long, and more frequent, drives (just remember there’s no CD player) while cheaper two-wheel drive wagons would well suit urban duties and occasional trips to the Never Never.

Tune into smart television

We get asked for passwords so often now that most people just use the same password and this, writes COLIN DUNKERLEY, creates numerous problems.

New technology means solving a whole lot of issues before you come to wonder how you lived without it. NATHAN WELLINGTON discusses Smart TV.

ou’ve just visited a new website and before you know it you are asked to create a password.

Another one!

You pull out your little book of passwords and are so numb to creating a new one you just use one you have used before. This is not a good idea.

Recently a client contacted me to say that her LinkedIn password had been reset for security reasons. The security reason was 117 million usernames and passwords had been stolen.

You might have signed up to LinkedIn too and then never used it.

That doesn’t matter.

What matters was your username and password were stolen.

If you don’t use LinkedIn many other companies have had your username and passwords stolen like Sony, eBay and Dropbox plus many others.

After my client changed her LinkedIn password she had to visit every other website account and change every password. So if you use the same password for every site, if it’s compromised you must change your password on every site starting with your email account. Why your email

account? If you need to reset a password what do companies do?

Email you a link to change it. If someone has access to your email account they can get access to almost everything.

Sometimes when creating a new password you might just vary it slightly.

Sounds sensible at the time but when you have so many that are similar it is very easy to get them muddled. Fluffy1, Fluffy2 etc.

So what is the solution?

1. Use a password manager like 1Password or Lastpass. A password manager creates, remembers and fills in your password when needed. You don’t even need to know them at all.

2. Use a different password for each site and make a complex password. Here is a challenge for you. Memorise this password in 20 seconds “Tbmshtr3”.

Can you do it? Looks complex doesn’t it? It is but it’s simple as well. “Three blind mice see how they run 3” By taking the first letter of any song or phrase you can create tough passwords that are easy to remember.

have had a rush of calls from clients who are changing their internet to the NBN and are questioning the competency of their service provider and the hassle of setting up the new modem and home network.

For many there is a definite speed difference in having the new digital service connected, but not all services are faster. Many of the new modems support a wireless network that provides a 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ signal – and this is perfect for a Smart TV. “What is ‘Smart TV?” you ask. Well they can’t make you coffee in the morning but that is probably just an upgrade away!

The benefits of Smart TVs is that they provide internet streaming television for viewing pleasure.

The next question will be “Yes, but how much is this going to cost me?”

Well, Netflix uses 1GB of data an hour for standard definition television from the internet. If you are connected to the lowest Telstra NBN plan you get 100GB per month, so that equates to 100 hours of movies and television or 4.1 days of nonstop, no toilet breaks, no sleep, internet television.

When hands-on still matters How many times we hit shopping centres jammed with fast fashion stores with a wallett full of cred credit and find nothing to buy, muses KAY McMAHON.

M

any stores cater for androgynous-bodied 20-yearolds and don’t offer 55+ yearolds fashion that fits, suits our lifestyle, covers our lumps and bumps or lasts longer than two wears.

Fast fashion has done the fashion industry a disservice, especially those who remember what quality, make and fit was all about.

Local labels once offered a plethora of choices designed for local lifestyles, in sizes and proportions to fit local bodies and remained in our wardrobes for many years. (Many of us are now passing on special pieces to daughters and granddaughters.)

But don’t despair. We aren’t the only ones feeling the pain.

There’s a rise in consumers, young and old, who want a slower-paced and more local, community life.

There’s been a slow food movement, a slow travel movement, slow journalism and now slow fashion. Yes, slow fashion is fashionable and local designers are reaping some of the benefits.

An exponent of this movement is Paula Dunlop whose self-named jewellery label is slowly making a name for itself in the fashion and accessory

“What I’m interested in most is ‘process’, how we make things.” Paula says. “I studied art before I studied fashion and I think one unifying theme across my work in different creative practices has definitely been this idea of ‘slow making’ and the touch of the hand.”

She believes the love for her practice began in the family home.

“Both my mum and dad are good with ‘hands-on’ work. Dad has always been a skilled carpenter and handyman, while Mum was a keen sewer, but is more a knitter and crocheter nowadays.

“So I guess I grew up in a household

where ‘do-it-yourself’ was the norm and kind of absorbed this way of being, where you took on projects and learned through doing.”

Her “doing” is creating beautiful pieces with synergies between art and jewellery.

While she has had exhibitions of her work, she’s keen to combine her love for fashion so that the work is wearable. Her bangles and earrings take anywhere from several hours up to three days for the lariat neckpieces.

Currently she is working with Japanese glass seed beads as she finds them beautiful to handle and “quite seductive”.

“It reminds me of the pearl-headed

pins my mother used when sewing,” she said. “I used to sit under the sewing table and arrange and rearrange them into patterns.”

Paula’s pieces also require knitting with waxed cotton, weaving beads over that knitted cord and, for the lariats, weaving spiky beads into the woven base.

This is painstaking work and requires hours of concentration and focus while experimenting with new designs.

Her customers appreciate this process, happy in the knowledge they have one of only a few pieces hand-made with love by a designer close to home.

“I think my work appeals to people who appreciate thoughtful, handmade design,” Paula says.

And with her pieces available for sale in design-based retail shops, customers know their purchases are special.

If slow design is about quality over quantity, about better understanding the product and highlighting the need for consumers knowing how that product is made, jewellery designers like Paula Dunlop have a sparkling future.

A

fter spending most of her adult life moving around Central Queensland for her late husband’s career, Pam Hill, 69, decided a Lendlease retirement village would be her final move.

Who takes care of the family farm?

Rural properties can become the source of bitter argument without a proper succession plan, writes KATIE WORSNOP.

F

amilies often become involved in litigation after the death of a loved one when a son or daughter has worked on the family farm and contributed to the value of the family farm.

Typically, during succession planning, parents will leave the family farm exclusively to the eldest son, or will fail to recognise the contributions a child has made to the family farm.

Either way, this can lead to high a level of conflict within the family and result in costly litigation.

It is important when considering succession planning in the context of rural properties that parents consider: • How their children have contributed to their current wealth

• Who or what entity actually owns the asset • The need for any agreements, such as partnership agreements between husband and wife and any children working the property, business and family trust structures, or whether current agreements are adequate • The potential taxation implications for the succession plan.

What will happen after one parent dies? What if the remaining parent enters into a new relationship? Sweeping statements along the lines of “one day this will all be yours” have not necessarily stood up to be the case in the Will.

Should the children not working the farm be totally excluded from the family wealth?

The critical question for farming families is: when do we transfer control of the farm to our children? Should a transfer or division of the property occur prior to a parent passing away or by way of an inheritance pursuant to a Will.

To avoid a division within the family it is vital that all family members discuss the proposed plan to split control or transfer the family farm.

The best interests of the family and the profitability of the farm should be paramount.

No family wants on the death of a loved one to be arguing in court over their parent’s estate but this is the sad reality for many farming families.

WALKING ON the safe side Insurance policies can become a habit and, writes KATE CALLAHAN, an expensive habit that sometimes simply doesn’t pay.

I

’ve always been cautious.

Look to the right, look to the left, and look to the right again.

That’s how I ran my life, so when my marriage ended in the early 1990s, I insured myself against every eventuality.

I took out life insurance (to pay out the mortgage if I died), income insurance (in case I got hit by a bus but didn’t die), and trauma insurance (for 23 “defined events”, such as breast cancer and heart attack).

If I couldn’t look after my kids, then the insurance company would.

I set up automatic debits to cover the monthly premiums and tried not to think about the money I was spending on something I hoped would never happen.

The kids grew up and became independent. The mortgage was under control and I was otherwise debt free. I was earning a good living. I was fit and healthy.

But month after month,

year after year, I paid those premiums, too cautious to cut the umbilical cord that tied me to the policies.

When I remarried, my new husband questioned the value of all these insurances. He’d never had sleepless nights, wondering about who was going to look after him or his kids.

But old habits die hard, so I ignored his advice and persisted with my insurances.

Then I was diagnosed with facial melanoma.

Fortunately for me, it was caught early but the radical surgery knocked me for six. I felt disfigured and ugly.

When I finally picked myself up, my thoughts turned to the trauma insurance policy I’d taken out in 1988.

You can guess what happened. My claim was rejected. Apparently, my melanoma was “not serious enough”.

I was cured and never paid another premium.

Fast forward 30 years and moving house doesn’t elicit the same sense of excitement and urgency. In fact, there’s a level of dread.

Deep down you know your energy levels flag a lot quicker than they used to and there’s another secret you hold.

You have waaaaay too much stuff and the thought of moving bring on cold shivers.

So how you can take the stress out of your next move? Follow these tips and turn your move into a positive experience.

1. START EARLY Commence decluttering and reducing your excess well in advance of selling your home. Allow sufficient lead-time: don’t wait until your home is sold.

2. HAVE A CHECKLIST Write everything you need to do into a week-by-week checklist. The checklist should include disconnecting and reconnecting all essential services, as well as all the other tasks required to be done.

3. GET SUPPLIES Gather the packaging materials and supplies you need for packing. Bear in mind an average house requires between 40 and 60 boxes. Buying “seconds” boxes will save you some money, but don’t skimp on the quantity of supplies needed.

6. THE NIGHT BEFORE THE MOVE Leave out only what you need, that is, the bare minimum. You may feel like you’re camping out in your own lounge room but it’s only for a short period of time.

Enjoy the experience but make sure you get a good night’s sleep.

4. START PACKING Believe it or not, there is a right way to tape up the boxes and pack your belongings to prevent breakage and damage. Pack one room at a time and label every box with sufficient identifying details.

While some people will be prepared to undertake the move themselves, gone are the days when that was your only option.

It’s not uncommon for me to be left in charge of the move while the owners are absent.

Many of my clients have scheduled an overseas holiday to coincide with their move. The whole process is left in the hands of the organiser. They return home to find their new home fully unpacked and ready for living.

Well, lean in a little closer and I am going to tell you what I want you to do to start getting healthier. It doesn’t involve taking a little blue pill, or a red one for that matter.

Slow down and feel better Healing comes from within so, writes health blogger KAY STROUD, there is a lot to be gained if you take the time to smell the roses

I

t’s a great time of year to spend the day preparing and slow-cooking a beef casserole, and then to enjoy the delicious comfort food over a long, slow meal with family and friends.

That’s “slow food” right?

Well, no, not really.

The Slow Food movement is not so much about slowly cooked and eaten food, as it is about linking the pleasure of eating well with a commitment to local communities who produce food in a sustainable way and without exploiting people or the environment.

This is a progressive step, driven by a desire to be more responsible consumers.

Slow Food is just one of many groups that comprise the Slow Movement, a cultural revolution that advocates a shift toward slowing down life’s pace to allow time to re-evaluate current practices, consider local and global ramifications, take personal responsibility and make connections with people.

These are aims and activities

There’s more to slowing down than a slow-cooked beef casserole not always done at a slow pace.

There is Slow Education, Slow Gardening, Slow Travel, Slow Ageing, Slow Church, Slow Counselling, Slow Technology and Slow Medicine. And that’s just a sample.

These groups challenge the status quo. And it seems they are having a positive impact.

Could their stance help bring a new awareness that good isn’t necessarily a finite resource but can be made available for everyone, as we

seek more meaningful outcomes?

This is what I have found in my own experience. And I have learned that there’s no real progress in any field unless it leads thought in a more thoughtful, spiritual direction.

In relation to healthy ageing, for instance, the importance of spirituality, joyous pursuits and beautiful surroundings are gaining acknowledgement as being integral to health throughout

the whole of our lives.

“Every step of progress is a step more spiritual,” writes the discoverer of scientific Christianity, Mary Baker Eddy.

And she is not alone in thinking that.

Dr Michael Finkelstein, in his 2015 book about integrative or “slow” medicine wrote about our need for a model of healing where the objective is not to end a particular symptom, but to modify the entire mental, emotional, psycho-spiritual and social system.

He found, like Eddy before him, that when he added the metaphysical or spiritual aspect of health to his treatment, it helped his patients in ways he’d never imagined.

He found that thought, or consciousness, had to change first to affect healing.

That makes sense to me.

Increasingly valuing intelligent decision-making over thoughtless reactions leads us from a restricted, lowly, self-centred universe to one of

unlimited, more loving, possibilities.

As if to acknowledge the new model of medicine evolving, last year the renowned medical publication, The Lancet, launched a series of articles on the relationship of faith and spirituality to health for the first time in history.

Over many years I have consistently found that faith which leads to spiritual understanding has helped me take better care of my wellbeing. A milestone for me, while still a young woman, was the healing of destructive criticism of myself and others that had kept me downbeat for many years.

The “Slow” revolution encourages us to do everything as well as possible, instead of as fast as possible. That’s sound advice.

As we take some “slow” time to more thoughtfully and spiritually weigh our actions we’ll surely find a healthier, happier planet emerging.

THE annual Springtime on the Mountain open gardens festival at Tamborine Mountain is shaping up as the most diverse and spectacular for many years.

The festival was voted Community Event of the Year in January at the Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards.

Organisers have this year brought together eight private gardens – four for the first time and four great favourites – to open to the public over three days on the last weekend of September, Friday 23 to Sunday 25.

Offerings range from quaint and pretty cottage gardens to broad, open expanses with towering trees and delightful pockets of colour.

Just a few minutes from the tourist centre of Gallery Walk in Eagle Heights are three treasures; The Haven and Forget-Me-Not Cottage offer the colourful delight of cottage gardens while spectacular Villa Montana (pictured) evokes Italy.

The hub of activities will be the Vonda Youngman Community Centre in North Tamborine, where there will be a cafe, plant stalls, entertainment and loads of information about gardening from guest speakers.

They include Garden Guru Phil Dudman, radio host and magazine editor Paul Plant and horticulturalist and presenter Claire Bickle.

MAKE IT SIMPLE AND TASTY USING JUST 4 INGREDIENTS

“My Nana never counted a calorie in her life, she just ate good, wholesome, homemade meals and was rewarded with a long and healthy life.”

CONCERT BAND CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

A

ustralian entertainment legend Rhonda Burchmore will join with the Queensland Pops Orchestra to present an exciting night’s entertainment with a tribute to the great shows of Broadway.

Bringing her experience and knowledge to this production, Burchmore will lead and mentor up to 70 students from Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University Music Theatre course.

Many of these students are appearing in major productions in Australia and around the world and will demonstrate why they are the next generation of great music theatre entertainers.

With music from great productions such as West Side Story, A Chorus Line and Cabaret, the full chorus of students will bring the energy and colour of these significant Broadway events to life on stage.

THE Sunshine Coast Concert Band celebrates its 20th anniversary this month.

Music director Ken Chadwick and a group of dedicated volunteers met in 1996 and decided to gather a like-minded group of musicians to form a concert band.

Little did they realise that 20 years down the track, the group would be enormously proud to say it had raised about $500,000 for charities and not-for-profit groups on the Sunshine Coast.

The band has also proven to be a platform for musicians of different age and skill levels to get together in support of local institutions and to enjoy the camaraderie that playing together brings.

The band has become both a “first start” for school students and a “last chance” for musicians in their final years of playing.

Each has learned from the other and the broader community has been the beneficiary of some wonderful concerts along the way.

To celebrate the occasion, the band will be performing a special anniversary concert on

Saturday, August 20.

The day will feature many of the past and present artists, singers, musicians and dancers, who have made the ensemble an entertainment icon on the Coast. JAZZ PIANIST PRESENTS FATS WALLER AND COUNT BASIE SHOW

AFTER a sellout show last year, pianist Wil Sargisson returns with his Fats Waller and Count Basie show to the Jazz Sessions.

Joined by Peter Walters on double-bass, with guest vocals by local jazz artist Robyn Brown, it promises to be an amazing concert of the jubilant music of the 1920s and 1930s when the Boogie Woogie and Stride players were king.

ANDREWS SISTERS MAKE SUNSHINE MELODIES THE Andrew Sisters Tribute will star at the Judy Henzell Sunshine Melodies Concert Series this month.

There’s a fun vibe in the home of the royal family’s weekender, which for almost 1000 years has impressed allcomers with its battlements and turrets.

It is still the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world.

Next is St George’s Chapel, regarded as the finest medieval Gothic Church in Britain, which is the final resting place of many monarchs.

Add Eton; Datchet, where King Edward VII became the first monarch to ride in a motor car; and historic Runnymede where King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215.

And that’s just one section. The Thames Path is rich in history, big names and big houses and turns a walk into a treasure trove.

From her cottage on the edge of town at Quarry Wood, our great opera singing export Dame Nellie Melba sang for the trees as she practised her arias.

I kept a sharp eye out for Mr Toad, Mole and Ratty along the next stretch of the Thames as it was childhood memories made here that Kenneth Grahame drew on when he wrote Wind in the Willows.

And so it goes on, village after village, each filled with useless but fascinating trivia – Enid Blyton’s home in Bourne End; the pretty village of Cookham made famous by artist Sir Stanley Spencer; and the cottage by the river at Cliveden Reach where Secretary of State John Profumo’s affair with Christine Keeler caused the scandal of the early 1960s.

The fields become fewer and the urban tracks become bigger, better and busier as I cruise into Maidenhead, which had a saucy reputation from the early to mid 20th century.

Picture postcard scenes at every turn on a clearly marked route.

A local is quick to ask if I have come looking for Skindles, a hotel which in its heyday built most of that reputation.

It was here that straight-laced Queen Victoria’s son the Prince of Wales, who later became Edward VII, and his mistress Lillie Langtry met and the social set soon joined them there for parties and naughty weekends.

In the 1960s and ‘70s, Skindles became a music venue for the really big acts such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

Skindles has gone now, well outlived by the beautiful old stone bridge I cross.

Not much further downstream is the famous Sounding Arch Bridge, so named because there’s a perfect echo from the path underneath.

1838 to take the Great Western Railway across the Thames and has the flattest and widest brick arch in the world.

Onwards, and guests sit in the late afternoon sun at Oakley Court, an impressive Victorian house built in Gothic style by Richard Hall-Saye who wanted to make his French wife feel at home.

During World War II it was the secret HQ of the French Resistance, with Charles de Gaulle a regular visitor, then it was used as a spooky set for a number of films including the Rocky Horror Picture Show, before being converted to a hotel in 1981.

And so it goes on until, emerging from a bushy path to an expanse of green lawns, Windsor Castle looms into the

F

rankston Caravan Park is a good spot to stay the night before boarding as it is handy to the quay and, if time permits, I suggest a dummy run to familiarise yourself with the route as Melbourne traffic can be daunting, especially when towing a van at peak hour.

There are night and day crossings. We left at 9am so booked the ocean recliners rather than a cabin.

It is recommended to arrive at least two hours early to line up as it closes one hour before sailing.

My husband suffers seasickness so came armed with remedies and ginger tablets. There are numerous seating options on the ship and the restaurants and cafes were excellent, with many options to experience the “tastes of Tassie”.

We spent little time in the recliners and found ample seating on the ship.

Even the bars had great selections, particularly Tassie wines and beers.

It is important to do some research before booking as there is quite a range of fares and accommodation, as well as discounts on selected sailings throughout the year.

As ours was a day trip, we chose the recliners but on reflection we did not spend much time seated as there was so much to see and experience on the ship.

At booking you are required to give an exact measurement of vehicle and caravan, so that your allocation and fee

can be determined. You can take your pet but need to book a kennel and Tasmanian quarantine applies.

Loading runs like clockwork. On arrival, proceed to the vehicle check-in booth for a boarding pass, cabin key and ship directory.

You then remain in your vehicle for boarding, which is easy. Simply follow crew directions and the white lines until you reach your allocated spot. There is no need to reverse.

Be sure to take note of the deck

Quarantine inspections will be completed prior to boarding with random inspections taking place during disembarkation at Devonport Terminal.

Boats and fishing gear must be clean and dry and vehicles must be free from visible signs of soil and mud.

Loose gas cylinders also need to be declared and will be stored separately in a cage on the ship for collection on disembarking.

We disembarked at about 6.30pm and had a thorough quarantine inspection which delayed our exit.

We had pre-booked a van park a short drive from the port and were buzzing with excitement for what was ahead.

We stayed for more than two months and found Tasmania a wonderful experience.

We could have stayed another month but by April, snow was falling in the high country, a good time for Queenslanders to exit with promises to return.

This is a true story made possible by the commitment of journalists and editors of the Boston Globe. Over the years the paper had received letters about young boys having been molested by members of the priesthood. Most of the Boston police force was from Irish stock and the city’s heritage was bound with the church, which was sacrosanct. Letters kept trickling in about boys being abused by the people who should have been looking after them and finally the dam burst. Outrage followed.

The attorney-general took the matter to the high court and some 2000 documents were released. The modus operandi of the Church was revealed. There was naming and shaming of priests, but thousands of boys had lost their innocence. As one mother said, “being silent is a sin”. This is an emotional story and a disturbing read.

Both this book and the major movie Spotlight are excellent pieces of work. The investigative team of reporters from the Boston Globe detail the maleficence of not only the Catholic Church but also the leaders of the Boston community, judges, lawyers and the police. It outlines the squalid tale of the massive cover up of the sex abuse of young children by more the 70 predator priests. The betrayal of trust has exposed the failings of the Catholic Church to carry out what should be its core mission. Sadly this type of journalism is now gone being replaced with a one e-page article.

A heavy but excellent read.8/10

BOOK review JOHN KLEINSCHMIDT Betrayal is an expose of horrific sexual abuse of prepubescent boys by Catholic priests in the Archdiocese of Boston from the 1980s to 2002.

Horrendously, the Boston experience is only a reflection of the same abuse of children by priests in many countries around the world, including Australia.

In the US alone, a staggering 17,259 victims were abused by 6427 priests between 1950 and 2013 and that is only the reported cases. The book details sickening abuse of young boys, extraordinary measures taken by Bishops, Cardinal and Pope to hide the dark side of the Church and the reluctance of the Church to initiate reforms to prevent any further abuse of children.

The hypocrisy of the Church is breathtaking.

Informative but not an enjoyable read.

It is the trail of “hush money” secretly paid to buy victim silence, deeds that left millions of the faithful in the US and around the world shocked, angry, and confused.

How did I feel while reading Betrayal?

Shocked, disgusted, repulsed, disillusioned, enraged, bitter, saddened, powerless – all of these and more.

Do not expect to turn these pages and not experience an emotional rollercoaster ride. Investigative journalism is bound to be hard hitting. This Pulitzer Prize winning effort by the staff the Boston Globe was a recognition of their relentless pursuit of a pedophile priest which in turn led to uncovering a massive cover-up by the Boston Archdiocese of scores of such clerics under the leadership of a Cardinal who at one time was a possible successor to the papacy.

This is an important chronicle of a dark epoch in the Catholic Church. It is not an easy book to read, but an important one nonetheless.

MARY BARBER During the past 15 years, more than 1500 American priests have faced allegations of sexual abuse. This book takes these chilling figures and shows us some of the shattered lives behind them.

It describes the patterns of predatory behaviour, the grooming and the false persona of “all round good guy” that these evil men cultivate. These priests used their Church as their cover. Some even prayed with the boys while molesting them. Other priests molested boys in the confessional. Nowhere was safe.

I learnt a lot from reading this book. It is about the loss of innocence and the ongoing damage to a young person’s life. It’s also an important lesson about how power and position allowed the Church officials to ignore the voices of their parishioners.

With Australia’s Royal Commission into institutional child abuse ongoing and the popularity and success of the Spotlight movie, I approached this book with a gloomy anticipation. There were no surprises. Personally it brought back memories of being raised in Catholicism and the fear and guilt it engendered and the utter power of those in authority.

I found reading this book heavy-going and confess to skipping at times, as there was so much factual data and repetition. The “Afterword to the 2015 edition” was an excellent summary and I wish I had read that beforehand.

I am glad that I read this book, but saddened. I am encouraged by the changes in the Church but so much more needs to be done, not only in the Catholic church but in any organisations where the powerful can prey on the vulnerable. I think it will appeal to a select audience.
