A steam train with a happy load of passengers at its Nambour base. TRAINING — ALL ABOARD
IF YOU love trains and have some time to spare, the Sunshine Coast Miniature Railway would love to hear from you.

Volunteers are needed to help operate the miniature railway in Florence St Park in Nambour and there are opportunities in every department of the railway.
“As our membership gets older we want to pass on the steam railway skills to others and many retirees, with time on their hands could be interested in assisting us,” says president Ken Coulter.
Volunteers can come alone or with family and friends as there is a job for everyone, from train operations and preparing them ready for passengers to selling tickets and working the snack ba.
The miniature railway operates public train rides on the fourth Sunday of each month when hundreds of eager travellers come along to ride the trains.
There are also monthly member days to just “play trains” and special days during the year just for members and their families.
All training (excuse the pun) is provided as the railway has safety first, and it’s also an opportunity to learn about putting carriages on to trains, connecting air brake pipes and learning to drive.
“If you want to drive a locomotive you will start on the battery operated electric locos as you also learn all about how a steam locomotive works,” Ken says. “Eventually, under supervision, you will be taught how to drive a steam loco until sufficiently experienced to take it out on your own.”
Members will assist with whatever aspect of the railway is of interest.
“For example, you may be interested in the railway tracks and learning how to weld, but whatever your interest you will be made very welcome,” Ken said.
“The railway is very conscious that all the skills of operating a railway have to be passed on and you will play an important part in passing the skills to another generation.”

Queensland’s Beefy’s will go up against Glenorie Bakery in NSW.
The bakery that raises the most funds through pie sales during the contest wins the trophy, but the real winners are kids at the Queensland Children’s Hospital and Westmead Children’s Hospital.
Since the competition kicked off in 2011, it has raised more than $230,000 for the purchase of vital hospital equipment.
Both teams are aiming high, having set their targets at $25,000.
Beefy’s will contribute $1 from every Big Queenslander Pie and $5 from every Big Queenslander Pie Pack to their tally.
Its State against State and Mate against Mate in the Pie of Origin. THE cooler months bring the many varieties of Camellia japonicas into flower, singles and doubles in white and various shades of pinks and reds.
They are great for spot planting or as an informal hedge. Buy while in flower to make sure it’s the colour you want
Another gorgeous plant is the magnolia, also flowering now in shades of mauves and purple. As they are deciduous, their flowers are shown to perfection on the bare branches There is also a beautiful yellow that goes by the name of Elizabeth, which is well worth seeking.
With the cost of veges going up, pop in a few lettuce, cabbage, silverbeet, beetroot and spring onions. A styrofoam box is good. Use a good quality mix with extra fertiliser and compost if available. Keep plants damp and use a liquid fertiliser fortnightly and you will be picking in no time. Prune roses to shape and plant fruit trees. Remove weeds while they are still small.
Mulch now while the weather is cool and give garden tools a clean and sharpen.
Happy gardening.

GREY MEDALLION IS BACK
THE Royal Life Saving Society’s Grey Medallion award course for over 50s to deal with an emergency when taking a dip, kayaking the waterways, or looking after grandchildren at the pool, returns to Caloundra next month.
“The Grey Medallion is not a swimming award as it’s not just about water safety and you don’t have to be able to swim or even be fit to do it,” says course facilitator Patricia Barry.
“The two-day course teaches people how to deal with emergency situations, give CPR, use a defibrillator, and undertake what we call dry rescues. You don’t need to even get into the water.”
The course covers emergency procedures, basic first aid and how to deal with marine stings and includes a section on water familiarisation for those who look after children.
The course, run by lifesavers from Ithaca Caloundra City Life Saving Club, is sponsored by BreakFree Resort in Caloundra and Accountants United.
The two-day course will be on two weekends – August 6-7 and August 27-28, 9am to 4pm, at Grand Pacific BreakFree Resort in Caloundra. Enrolment is only $5.
The course has been popular in previous years and places are limited so pre-enrolment is essential. To book, complete the on-line enrolment form at caloundracity.org.au or call 0402 454 644.
