With the warm days and occasional showers, the gardens are still growing well, along with the weeds ! The dreaded hippeastrum grub is back, these black and white grubs can decimate our lovely bulbs in a truly fleeting time as they make their way through the leaves and into the bulb. Check daily and remove damaged foliage or dispose of any grubs you see.

Most bulbs can go in now, including jonquils and daffodils.

Rununculi and anemone forms are also available to plant now.

Plant some sweet peas on a fence or trellis for beautiful perfumed cut flowers, the Spencer varieties are highly regarded.

A great time of the year to plant vegetable seedlings or seed which can include lettuce, spring onions, beetroot, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, beans, peas.

Plant seed for carrots.

If you are looking for a good hedging plant sasanqua camellias are a good choice and flowering now. The japonicas are also starting to flower with many beautiful varieties available.

Caladiums are starting to die back, don’t forget to put a label in the pot and withhold water until Spring to stop them from rotting.

Still time to fertilise before the cool weather sets in.

I have recently returned with a group to the Wondai Garden Expo, I don’t think anyone returned empty handed ! Join me in May for a fabulous day out on a nursery crawl around Brisbane and Deception Bay.

Bare root roses are starting to appear now, get in early for the best varieties.

Check out the upcoming Agricultural Shows to see what grows well in our area, the Nambour Garden Expo is on again in July and not to be missed.

I love this time of the year, the days are getting shorter but much is achieved with the cooler days.
