SOCIAL GROUPS RELISH BELLA ITALIA CELEBRATIONS
SOCIAL groups from Co.As.It celebrated the 76th National Day of the Republic of Italy with dancing and dining reflecting their rich cultural heritage last month.
Both Casa Serena and Casa Aurelia activity centres were decorated to bring back memories of bella Italia for guests (and staff) who wore traditional folk costumes and danced to the music of their youth. After a feast of Italian staples such as antipasto, farfalle in pesto and tortellini in sugo, attention turned to another culinary staple – wine.
A winemaking demonstration reflected the significant role it plays in their culture, economy and health – something many Italian immigrants brought with them to Australia.
Guests at both centres participated in the classic foot-stomping methods of crushing the grapes, an experience that reminded them of both Italy and family.
The Italian Week events were declared a success in evoking memories, blending cultures, and encouraging clients to participate in activities that stimulate balance, movement and cognition.
Co.As.It (Committee of Assistance to Italians) provides home support services and social connection to more than 5000 people of diverse cultural background every week.

HISTORY RESTORED
MEMBERS of the Sandgate Historical Society have celebrated the official opening of the latest restoration of the memorial to Robert Travers Atkin on the 150th anniversary of his death.
Atkin, an early Queensland social justice campaigner, journalist and politician and his sister Grace, who helped break new ground in education for girls, are both buried in the St Margaret’s Anglican churchyard.
The monument was erected in 1872 and has had two previous restorations.
The latest project which involved the Sandgate Historical Society, began in 2016, with almost $60,000 being raised by the Atkin family, the legal fraternity and the local community.
