Editor’s note

I

remember as a kid when we saw all the “old ladies” heading off to lawn bowls in their crisp white uniforms, and white stockings and shoes, we would laugh and say “there go the white leghorns”.

Much has changed. For a start, who am I to refer to “old ladies” when that’s me these days. Secondly, the uniforms have changed considerably and there simply aren’t that many “white leghorns” out there anymore.

As a cadet journalist, I had to be very careful not to confuse men’s “bowls” clubs with women’s “bowling” clubs and to refer to bowls not bowling, which meant 10-pin.

This came up a lot during winter when the Victorians would flood across the border for finer weather

Bowls unquestionably has been the predominant sport associated with retirees and the “oldies” for as long as I can remember. And while it still is the leader, its popularity is being challenged by the Baby Boomers.

This month we report on three sports that have captured the generation, one of them only a few years old but already hugely popular.

All are good for mind, body and soul, kind to creaky knees and, as they cater for all fitness levels, can be as fun as they are social.

But of course, all games are on hold for now, as is just about everything we hold dear – clubs and meetings, gatherings with friends, travel, entertainment ... it’s a long list and growing.

My apologies to all the community groups who contribute their notes.

With the current situation, there wasn’t much point in printing them, but be assured that all will be back in due course. Meanwhile, aim for good health in mind and body and stay out of harm’s way.

Good sports - beyond the bowling green While lawn bowls remains the staple social sporting activity, it’s not the only group sport for the generation. There are others that don’t require sprinting around a court, tackling opponents or being at the top of your game, and where enjoyment and socialisation is key.

GLENIS GREEN and DOT WHITTINGTON investigate some alternative games that are good for mind, body, and soul - and not too hard on old knees.

TABLE TENNIS FORREST Gump elevated the sport to a new level and now that age-old favourite, table tennis, is enjoying a resurgence with seniors who are rapidly realising its benefits for both mind and body.

Members are signing up to clubs and veterans’ championships are attracting talented players who travel throughout Australia and overseas to compete against the best of their peers.

Enthusiast Ken Hay, who began playing when he was 15 and is now a superfit 78, is one of the sport’s greatest advocates, saying its health benefits are enormous.

“Playing table tennis can pump the heat out and get the heart going,” he says.

“The sweat you lose helps with weight loss and the heart will be trained to pump at a higher rate and will become more efficient in providing good blood circulation.

“It’s not only the hands, legs and body that work, but also the mind.

Every action is calculated in the brain and sent to the body to execute. This game involves total mind and body coordination.”

And as Ken also points out, it’s a sport that can be played out of the sun and in any weather – in fact being indoors has distinct advantages as he and his club discovered when asked to play some exhibition matches outside on a windy day. They spent a lot of time chasing after that devilishly light, little white ball.

“Yes, it was like having an ashtray on a motorbike,” quips a player.

Social table tennis and learn-to-play recently started in the Nambour area headed by Ken, who uses his daughter’s dance studio, when she is not using it for dance classes, as a base.

If you ever had a hit of table tennis – or ping pong as many of us called it – years ago, then now might be the time to try again. But be warned, those little paddles or bats have changed a lot over the years and if you are a serious contender then

these days it’s all about the “dimples” or “pimples” on the bat’s surface.

“There’s a lot more to it than hitting a ball over a net,” says Ken. “Over the years it has changed a lot – since the ’40s and ’50s when everyone had a table tennis racquet.

Rallies used to go for ages.”

Changing the pimple surfaces and the rubber backing on the bats has turned the game into one of tactics and briefer rallies – sometimes just three or four passes over the net compared to dozens.

The International Table Tennis Federation set some rules when the Chinese began using extremely thick rubber which caused the ball to simply drop over the net when hit hard. The rubber thickness has now been reduced officially to 2.5mm.

“Manufacturers developed all types of rubbers and changed the game completely,” says Ken. “It’s now all about tactics and different rubbers. There are now 850 different rubbers and at international events they categorise the rubbers and inspect the bats.

With today’s rulings, one side of the bat is black and the other side is red with different combinations of dimples.

Ken proves just how healthy the game is by pointing to a member who had a stroke and used the sport as rehabilitation to regain his co-ordination.

“He was playing competitive social games again within six months,” he says.

Ken, who worked as a cartographer, took early retirement with a redundancy but when he needed more money, he began a trophy making business which he ran for just over six years until suffering a sudden and severe heart attack at 64.

“I had a 99 per cent blockage in my right artery and 75 per cent in my left. I flatlined for four minutes before they brought me around,” he says.

His ribs were cracked during CPR and using a defibrillator. He says the nurses and doctors were cheering when he finally came to.

“You have to keep moving as you get older,” Ken says. “You can live longer playing table tennis.”

PICKLEBALL WITH a dash of table tennis, a hint of badminton and a serve of tennis, pickleball is easy to learn, fun, and, according to players, highly addictive.

And if you have never heard of it, that’s not surprising as it arrived in Australia only two years ago, in late 2017.

At the vanguard of the sport in Queensland, James Sharley stumbled across the game while holidaying in Spain three years ago – language is not a barrier to playing – then returned home to discover there was a centre near his home.

“I was drawn by the laughter,” he says. “I was on the court for 20 minutes that first day and I’ve not stopped going back. There’s no sweating, no aggression.

It’s just fun.”

He notes that when you make a good shot in pickleball, it is usually your opponent who congratulates you.

The game is played on a badmintonsize court – or about one-third of a

tennis court – using a paddle and a hollow ball with holes in it. Called a wiffle ball, it looks like a larger version of the cat toys that have little bells inside.

“It’s like playing table tennis on the floor and is generally played as a doubles game so it’s very social,” James says. “The rules are peculiar so it’s not tennis.”

To ensure there are no blistering aces, the serve is underarm. It requires strategy rather than power.

The ball must be allowed to bounce on the first and second returns but can be hit on the full after that. There’s also a non-volley space either side of the net, so no slamming.

There’s no need to fear for creaky knees, as play moves forward and back, and there’s no call for twisting and turning or causing stress to knees and ankles.

“You can self-regulate to avoid stress on the joints,” James says. “There are

two risk factors – running backwards and hydration – but that’s about it.

Physios and rehab therapists are recommending it.”

He emphasises the game is more about placement and accuracy than strength and hard hitting.

“A few of our players have played tennis and squash before but most didn’t have any racquet skills at all, and some tennis habits need to be ‘unlearnt’,” James says. “Scoring is similar to table tennis and points are won only on the service.”

Players can pace themselves, as the average doubles match – and it is generally played as a doubles game – takes about 15 minutes. Sessions are two hours.

“It’s a small court but it’s still an aerobic workout,” he says. “It’s not as sedate as croquet.”

The other advantage is that it is usually played indoors and protected from the weather, although with pickleball’s growing popularity more venues are needed and James said this could lead them outdoors.

Apart from its addictive qualities, pickleball attracts the 55+ cohort because most venues currently are available only during the day. And many of its proponents discovered the game while on a cruise as it is a popular deck sport.

The game itself also suits any level of fitness, so can be played at various skill levels regardless of age.

“You can skill up if you want or just have a lot of fun,” James says. “You get what you want from it.”

The oldest member at last year’s championships was 83.

James has delivered his introductory talk to 159 newcomers – only one didn’t return for a second session after the first free games.

“The joy for me is watching a new player because within 10 minutes you can see the confident smile,” James says.

“It’s simply addictive.”

PETANQUE/BOCCE IF YOU’VE ever been intrigued by romantic images of people throwing balls on a grass or sand court and wondered just what they were doing, the answer is playing pétanque or bocce or sometimes boules.

Pétanque or boules (boule is French for ball) is the French equivalent of Italy’s bocce and Australia’s lawn bowls.

It is said, though, that the French version is traditionally played with metallic balls on a dirt surface beneath plane trees, with a glass of pastis at hand.

Brisbane Pétanque Club was founded in 2002 by a small group of enthusiasts who, for sheer love of the game, built courts at Kalinga Park, Clayfield, to better share the popular French tradition.

“You don’t need to have white uniforms and shoes to play, it’s very casual,” says Brisbane Petanque Club secretary Pascal Dufroux.

And it’s not just social, but “very, very, very social”.

“We have spare boules so anyone can come any time and try out,” he says.

The rules of petanque are simple. A game commences with a coin toss, “although we prefer to signal the start with the gentle pop of a champagne cork”.

Petanque was first played in Provence, in 1910, when a tournament

Centuries earlier in Italy, bocce was invented by the Romans who threw stones and later crafted wooden balls.

The heavy, usually brass-based balls have no bias which makes the contest more like a game of oversized marbles.

The green is also shorter and narrower than lawn bowls.

The balls can weigh anything from 900 grams to 1.2kg and are rolled towards

a boccino (smaller ball), with the closest being the winner. Some clubs also use composite coloured balls.

It is now played around the world and as well as being good for fitness in keeping bodies moving and bending, is also highly entertaining.

And while it may look like a gentle pastime, like its French counterpart, it can be excellent exercise for mind and body and a great way to make new friends. Players can be as social or competitive as they choose.

The difference between the two is that traditional bocce is more of a bowling game, while petanque is more of a tossing game, like horseshoes.

Bocce players take steps before throwing, petanque players stand still.

Bocce balls are usually rolled palm up, petanque balls tossed palm down, so they get backspin on release.

Italian-born Egidio (Eddie) Fratus, 76, who took up bocce in 1991, is one the sport’s greatest advocates. But the game is so user friendly that a 94-year-old club mate who had a hip replacement was able to resume play just four weeks later.

It attracts younger players too. Luisa Cazzola has lured her 20-year-old grandson Paul Currie to join her.

Paul says he enjoys both the social and competitive side of the game, as well as being able to play with family.

“A lot of nationalities and ages play bocce, but it’s mainly seniors over 65,” Eddie says.

My wife has had a level 4 in-home package for some time but is now regressing to need 24/7 care. She has the necessary ACAT code.

We received a long list of services that are government approved for use of in-home care funds, which include such nebulous items as â&#x20AC;&#x153;pamperingâ&#x20AC;?!

So, you think you can ask your provider (in our case, IRT At Home) for any of those things. But if that need is not in the providerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;stableâ&#x20AC;? it may not be available, because each professional required to meet each need has to be accredited.

Accreditation requires lots of form filling, and, for example, my wifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s usual manicurist was not willing to do that.

Instead, just to have her toenails cut she has to go to the approved podiatrist who charged more than $1000 for a pair of shoes which were unnecessary.

More recently, my wife had a stroke and now her speech is indistinct, so we asked for a speech therapist. Yes, there was one in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;stableâ&#x20AC;? but when contacted, we were told no appointment is available for six months. Another speech therapist is available in 10 days but is not yet accredited. We are waiting to hear if she will do the accreditation process. Likewise, hairdressing. My wifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s usual hairdresser declined to go through the accreditation process and we were put on to a hairdresser who is accredited â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but she works only two days a week at a retirement village 25 minutes drive away.

We have no complaint about the supply of daily carers and cleaners, but the complexity of getting other services supposed to be on offer is not good.

A few editions back you mentioned a book by Mocco Wollert that would interest anyone who has ever lived in Darwin. I have just finished her book â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bloody Bastard Beautifulâ&#x20AC;? about life in 1960s and â&#x20AC;&#x2122;70s Darwin when Mocco and her husband started their Aussie life, coming from Germany and moving straight into remote Darwin.

What a great book, full of humour, pioneering spirit and wonderful observations about life in the old Darwin. I wish Mocco would write a continuation of her life in Queensland from 1972.

(YT Mar), itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that old-school teaching of English, prior to the 1970s, covered acceptable expression, grammar, punctuation and spelling, according to the Oxford standard in every government school in Australia.

This standard of English seems to be a foreign language to communicators today.

The baby appears to have been thrown out with the bathwater.

Since then, it has been Raffertyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Rules and invented spelling, which much of the media and exposure to the internetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Americanisms adopt.

So ... the problem is, that there is no hard and fast rule, and it depends on oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s educators, education institution, level of education and audience. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Immersionâ&#x20AC;?, as all teachers understand, is the key to the acquisition of competence in language skills. The overuse of frustrating words such as â&#x20AC;&#x153;likeâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;basicallyâ&#x20AC;? displays poor communication skills. They are fillers for those who want to sound socially articulate and acceptable.

A vast majority has normalised these into day to day conversation.

Exposure to social media, with all its contributors, codes and abbreviations, has created functional languages unique, but exclusive to certain social groups, leaving interpretation to outsiders impossible.

Symbols and icons replacing words, have their following. Children learn more online from daily exposure, than from face to face communication. As a result, they adopt inappropriate language, which 50 years ago, would have been frowned upon.

Excellence in the English language, no longer a set standard of presentation, is negotiable, apparently. Anything goes, depending upon the audience. Up with that we will not put!

END OF AN ERA FOR STALWARTS

AFTER 20 years of dedicated service and commitment to New Farm’s Nash Theatre, Brian and Brenda White are calling it a day and will retire to Tasmania in June, all going well.

The couple, who have had a lifelong interest and involvement in community theatre in England and around Australia, have been involved in all aspects of the theatre and have witnessed the highs and challenges of the company over two decades.

The theatre’s location changed numerous times before it settled into its current home at 52 Merthyr Rd, 12 years ago.

Brenda says the heart of the theatre is its community and its multi-generational diversity.

Between them, the Whites have been involved in all facets of Nash Theatre, from administrative work and front of house to backstage.

They even shared the stage in the French farce A Flea in Her Ear. Brenda credits Nash Theatre’s forays into the Shakespearian

But there’s little doubt that Brenda and Brian have made precious memories to take with them.

Watching 17 and 70-year-olds working together under her direction stands out as one of many highlights of Brenda’s long association with the company.

“There’s no ageism in theatre, and it’s a lovely environment to work in because of that,” she says.

“It’s this diversity that is the most special and enduring quality of the theatrical community.”

FIRST AID VOLUNTEERS MORETON Bay First Aid Volunteers is looking for members to join them in their support of local community and charitable organisations with professional low cost first aid services at events.

The not-for-profit group, which began in 2018-19 has grown rapidly, with members coming from business, training, healthcare, finance, IT and even student backgrounds.

All funds raised are invested in the maintenance and upgrade of equipment, and training volunteer medics.

FRIENDSHIP is one of the greatest gifts. I once read that if you have one best friend in your life, you are very lucky.

Friendship is not something you can buy, it can only be given or found or created.

A friendship is precious, fragile but at the same time strong and resilient. But true friendship can only endure if it sticks to strict rules.

Rule number one is honesty. By that I do not mean you should tell your friend she looks rotten in that new dress or that she has put on weight or that her new hairdo makes her look old. That’s cattiness not honesty.

Honesty means warning your friend she’s making a mistake or doing

something you perceive as dangerous, when they can’t see it. They might be cross with you at the time but probably will be thankful down the track.

Money should never create upset between friends. I am forgetful. With each passing year it gets worse. I am mortified if I find out that I owe somebody money and there is no excuse for not paying it back as soon as possible.

If you can’t remember when you borrowed that money for a coffee from your friend, write yourself a note. My desk is littered with yellow post-its because my brain often refuses to work at more than half capacity.

There is no gender gap in friendship. I have wonderful male and female friends.

And no, my male friends are not all gay.

Age is also unimportant. I am, at least I hope so, friends with my grandchildren and their friends. I also have a gym friend who is decades younger than me. I call her my gym-friend because that it is where we met.

We spend a lot of time having coffee and discussing the affairs of the world.

We both have strong opinions and do not hesitate to voice them.

It doesn’t affect our friendship as we agree to differ. And if she really can’t see my point of view, I tell her that she should respect her elders!

May you find that special friend and your friendship last a lifetime.

PICTURE this scene: A colourful sunrise illuminates the sky, the tinted light dancing across the glass-like surface of the sea. A cool, fresh breeze touches my skin as I enter the water.

Now, with the sound of a needle scratching across a vinyl record, scrap that scene. Yes, the sunrise was picturesque, but the water was cloudy and choppy. This was Darwin in the wet season, so without a breeze, the air was thick and humid. Just getting dressed made me sweat.

But I had the chance to try stand-up paddle boarding, often known by its acronym SUP, and I wasn’t going to miss it. Hubby wondered what the appeal was because you can sit down in a canoe.

If you’re going to attempt to stand on

a long, floaty thing, then flat water would be the best spot to learn. A few ripples would not stop me.

As advised, I started by kneeling on the board before moving to an upright position. This proved tricky as the wavelets meant my feet were now on something akin to a giant plate of jelly.

In other locations, falling off would not be a big deal, but in Australia’s northern waters there’s more incentive to stay on the board.

The possibility of crocodiles, box jellyfish and sharks had me ready to sprint across the water in a biblical way.

There was even a rumour that a sea snake had turned up on the beach.

Eventually I mastered the standing part but dipping the paddle into the water caused further comical wobbling. My own version of stand-up comedy!

By the time I succeeded, the small waves had washed me to shore, so I started again. Progress was slow.

The most sensible thing I did was transfer to nearby Lake Alexander, where the water was more serene. I remained unconvinced that a croc would not make its way across the narrow slither of land to the lake. The activity was much easier without waves and I enjoyed a slow trip around the lake.

I’m told SUP is good for the core muscles. I certainly felt these and a few others the following day.

FISH TACOS • 3-4 pieces of boneless fish, chopped into cubes • ½ - 1 tbsp coconut oil • Pinch of seaweed salt • 8-12 large lettuce leaves (these will be the taco shells) Serve with Tomato Free Tangy Salsa Optional: grated cheese, sliced avocado, grated carrot, fresh herbs METHOD: 1. Wash the lettuce leaves and set them aside in a bowl.

2. Preheat a frying pan and add some coconut oil and allow it to melt all over.

3. Add the pieces of fish and salt into the frying pan and cook until golden brown and cooked through.

4. When they’re ready pop them into a serving bowl.

5. If you’re serving the tacos with grated cheese, carrot, fresh herbs and/ or sliced avocado, put them all into separate bowls.

6. Put the tomato-free tangy salsa into a serving bowl.

7. Put all the bowls on the table and allow everyone to help themselves.

8. Put 2 lettuce cups on top of one another and fill with the fish, tomato free salsa and other optional ingredients.

SLOW COOKED CARDAMOM SPICED BEEF

TOMATO FREE TANGY SALSA • ½ red onion, finely diced • 1 cucumber, finely diced • Juice of ½ lemon • Juice of 1 lime • ½ - 1 red chilli, diced • Salt and pepper to taste • A dash of apple cider vinegar • ½ bunch coriander, finely chopped (roots and leaves) METHOD: 1. Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl.

2. Taste the mixture and add more salt to taste if needed.

3. Serve on top of tacos or seafood or enjoy it mixed through salads.

• 2 kg diced chuck steak, grass fed • 3 tbsp coconut oil • 2 cans organic tomatoes • 4 tsp Chinese five spice powder • 2 tsp cardamom powder • 1 tbsp vegetable stock powder • 2 tbsp beef broth • 1 tsp pepper • 1 brown onion, diced METHOD: 1. Add 1 tbsp coconut oil to a pan and turn the heat to medium.

2. Add the onion and spices to the pan and stir until onions are translucent and the spices are fragrant, and transfer to your slow cooker.

3. Keeping the pan on the heat, brown the beef in 3 batches, transferring to the slow cooker as you go. You may want to add 1-2 Tbsp of coconut oil to this as you go.

4. Add all of the remaining ingredients to the slow cooker and stir through to combine.

5. Turn onto low, and slow cook for a minimum of 6 hours, or until beef is tender.

6. Serve with rice, cauliflower rice, wilted silver beet or spinach, or your chosen vegetable.

CHICKEN, SAGE AND ZUCCHINI FRITTERS • 2 cups zucchini, grated • 3 organic eggs • ½ tsp pepper • 1 cup leftover shredded chicken • 1 tbsp Chicken Broth

• 4 tbsp coconut flour, sifted • 1 tsp seaweed salt • 1/3 cup torn fresh sage leaves • Coconut oil, for cooking

METHOD: 1. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl until combined evenly.

2. Heat a frying pan on medium heat.

3. Add some coconut oil the pan and allow it to melt all over.

4. Add small amounts of the mixture to the pan (in fritter shapes) and cook no more than four at a time.

5. Cook on each side until golden, when ready place onto a plate with paper towel.

6. Continue cooking the rest of the mixture until you have used it all up.

7. When ready serve with a fresh salad, or use these as lunch box or work snacks.

Plane crashes not enough to ground this action man After three near-death experiences in plane crashes, you’d think pilot Gerry Geltch would be out buying lotto tickets and playing it safe, writes GLENIS GREEN. But it takes more than that to stop the self-confessed “big kid” looking for adventure.

A

nyone who knows Gerry Geltch, the second-generation sole director, owner and chief pilot of Air Fraser Island, also knows that this is an action man who loves the adrenaline rush.

Mountain climbing, kayaking, surfing, spearfishing, horse riding, caving, skateboarding, snowboarding – name just about any extreme sport and Gerry, who will be 62 in October, is in it boots and all.

His latest endeavour is a little more sedate by his standards – latin dancing – but he is tackling it with the same passion and rate of knots that have defined his life.

If the name rings a bell that’s because he was in the headlines

recently when a new Cessna 206 he had just bought for the Air Fraser Island fleet crashed into waters off Fraser Island.

“I’d only had it a fortnight and I was training a pilot for emergencies and there was a failure in the steering rudder, so I took over (the flying),” he says.

He thought he could fly the plane out of trouble and managed to get it airborne again, but a series of incidents caused by the rudder failure resulted in engine failure when he was about 350m out to sea and he had to ditch into the ocean.

To say the trainee pilot was a bit stressed might be an understatement.

“He had plenty of time to

contemplate what was going on and he did panic a bit,” Gerry says.

With the nose of the plane up and the craft sinking in 15m of water and waves lapping at chest height, Gerry managed to get the trainee out and into a life jacket but couldn’t find any of the remaining life jackets for himself.

“He (the trainee) was in shock with a gash to his head, I had gashes all over.

I hung on to him and dragged him into shore, about 300 yards. By the time I pulled him into the breakers an ambo officer had come out on a boogie board.”

Such an ordeal would have left most over 55s taking it easy for some time, but not Gerry. He was back rock climbing three days later, keeping track on his ever-present fitness app.

As a pilot he has to stay fit, so he also has a home gym and loves nothing better than climbing flights of stairs, boasting “I did 117 floors last time I was in Melbourne”.

His business is his other passion. He took it over from his father Harry who began offering the Fraser Island experiences and scenic flights in the mid-1970s as Harry’s Air Charter. Now Gerry’s son Troy, soon to be 28 and himself a new dad of Harry Junior, is readying to take it over.

Air Fraser Island offers island experiences from the air as well as the ground and now operates out of Sunshine Coast Airport.

Gerry says one of the perks of being a pilot travelling to one of the most famous islands in Australia is that he also gets to ferry around many celebrities and politicians.

As for those other near-misses in planes – one was in 2001 at the Sunshine Coast Airport in a Cessna 402 which he was buying off Dr Richard Heath. It crashed just short of the runway and Gerry ended up in ICU on life support with so many face

fractures his face had to be rebuilt with metal rods. He also suffered three breaks in his spine.

The other involved a seaplane which hit a log on takeoff near Kingfisher Bay on Fraser Island, but Gerry was not badly hurt.

“Ah it’s just another day in the office,” he says philosophically. “You’ll never kill me, it’ll be old age or misadventure, not disease. I love being fit – surfing, spearfishing, running up and down mountains and dancing. I love life. I’m just a big kid really.”

Gerry says one of his goals this year is to traverse the four points of Australia. He’s already done the South Cape walk in Tasmania, now there’s the east point at Byron Bay, Cape York in North Queensland and the westernmost point in Western Australia.

And he plans to keep running marathons, especially with son Troy who is also a triathlete.

Don’t be swayed while under tow Imagine heading along the Bruce Highway on a bright day, overtaking a slowish truck in a passing zone when, without warning, a wilful caravan wants to swap ends. BRUCE McMAHON reports on trailer sway.

I

t’s a tad scary as oncoming truckers pull to the side of the road. Travellers behind pull back. There’s a studied silence in the cabin as a bucking van tries to throw the outfit off the road and into the bushes.

What happens next could – in a matter of seconds – be catastrophic.

Trailer sway, or yaw or fishtailing or snaking, is probably more common on today’s roads than Australian accident statistics reveal.

Some vanners may only quietly mention incidents over an evening ale.

And remedies for trailer sway are not always intuitive according to experts.

“The severity of trailer sway ranges from a sudden frightening, but shortlived incident, all the way to causing a complete loss of vehicle control,” says Stefan Drew at Melbourne Trailer and Caravan Supplies.

He’s an advocate for electronic stability controls on caravans to control situations before they become an accident.

A swaying van or trailer can be caused by a number of issues: • Underinflated tyre pressures

• Uneven or over-loading • Poor, uneven hitching • Inappropriate speed • Oncoming vehicles • Low pressure area when passing another vehicle It can happen on good bitumen and in good weather. And once a van begins to sway that swinging, snaking motion may increase through the fulcrum at the hitch point. So what to do?

Most experts agree: • Stay calm and hold a steady course • DO NOT try and steer out of the sway

• Get off the accelerator • Don’t brake the tow vehicle • Apply – gently – the van’s electric brakes with dashboard controller • Pull over and check load, tyres and hitch level.

Most sway problems appear to begin with an uneven load upsetting the dynamics of the rig.

Vanners have responsibilities to check the distribution, and weight, of loads plus tow ball limits; also check the vehicle’s handbook for any towing limitations.

Some new vehicles sold in Australia, such as Ford’s Ranger ute, now have trailer sway systems inbuilt where, “for moderate sway, the front brakes will engage in a left-right alternating pattern to generate a yaw movement in the vehicle that counteracts the trailer sway.

For more severe sway, engine torque is reduced to zero and brake pressures are applied to all four wheels in order to reduce the vehicle’s speed below the trailer’s critical speed.”

There are also electronic stability controls which monitor trailer sway, and correct inconsiderate moves by braking the wheel(s) on one side of the van. These can be retrofitted to trailers with electric brakes.

PS: We’ve survived one big sway with a borrowed caravan with luck and on instinct alone; backed off the throttle, touched the brakes, held the wheel straight and then accelerated to straighten things up.

Most of the problem was caused by full water tanks which were sitting behind the test van’s axle, and a slight directional change.

New services in sight NORTHERN Brisbane residents can now reach life-changing technology at Chermside Day Hospital, which has introduced ophthalmic surgery to their list of professional medical services.

CDH has spent more than $500,000 implementing ophthalmic services, including new equipment such as an Alcon Centurian Phaco machine, a Zeiss Lumera 700 microscope and a Callisto eye system.

CEO and Director of Nursing, Ian Jones said CDH was the only private day hospital in the region, from the inner city to North Lakes, to offer this specialty service.

“The introduction of ophthalmology is to fulfil the high-demand from northern residents, particularly for cataract surgery, in an accessible, local setting, rather than having to travel to the city,” Mr Jones said.

“We’re proud to offer such speciality services here with top of the range equipment and highly skilled surgeons such as Dr Luke Maccheron, Dr Matthew Cranstoun and Dr John Hogden, with the support of specialised anaesthetists Dr Jules Maussen, Dr Ben Lincoln and Dr Steve Cook.

“Combined with our friendly and efficient atmosphere there are no difficult corridors to navigate and there is close parking to Westfield for relatives waiting for loved ones,” Mr Jones said.

Health and Welfare, the most common reasons for elective surgery in 2017-2018 was “other” cataract, with 71 per cent of these occurring in private hospitals.

“As the Australian population ages, there are increasing rates of eye disease and visual impairment driving demand for hospitals to offer eye surgery in the local community,” Mr Jones said.

The cataract surgery has already been performed on 50 people from the region.

Privately insured Northern Brisbane residents can receive a referral to an ophthalmologist and request to have their surgery performed at Chermside Day Hospital.

All by myself â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the challenges of living alone From the age of 75, more than 36 per cent of Australians are living alone, and three times more women than men are likely to be by themselves.

KENDALL MORTON reports that ageing solo brings some challenges.

arol Marak is the founder of The Elder Orphan Facebook group. She lives alone, and set up the group to provide social support for herself and others. Carol found the main concern for people ageing alone (solo agers) is not having a friend who will listen if they are feeling sad.

Secondly, they need someone to call in an emergency.

If you or a family member are ageing alone, here are some steps to help you stay safe and enjoy your independent life at home.

1. BUILD YOUR NETWORK Use meetup.com or Facebook or your church to create a small supportive community of solo seniors. Take a skills inventory of the group and see how you can help each other out. Someone who is housebound can make calls to check in on others or collect resources. Others may offer to give someone a ride to a medical appointment, arrange lunches or guest speakers.

2. AGE WHERE YOU ARE Think about your home and how it will work for you as you get older. Are there

many stairs? Is there a lift to your third floor unit? How steep is the driveway? Is the public transport handy? What about medical facilities?

If you are living your dream on a few acres 45 minutes from hospitals, it may be time to re-think this. Sometimes seniors are forced to move from their dream homes into care because the property becomes too much work.

You are more likely to have a fall or sustain an injury if your home is no longer suited to your needs.

3. STAY SAFE When living alone, falling over is a major fear. People fall for a few reasons. As you age, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s common to lose muscle mass, strength and flexibility. This makes you more prone to falling. Poor eyesight and medication can also contribute to falls. To help stay safe, join an exercise class for seniors or do your own program at home.

If you are not very mobile consider chair exercises, chair yoga and deep breathing. These activities can improve your blood flow, lift your oxygen levels and boost your mood.

Remove throw rugs from your home.

Install good lighting in all areas and be sure that the switches are within easy reach at night. Consider installing motion sensitive security lights.

4. PHONE A FRIEND Another major fear that is played out in the media is the possibility that no-one will know if you die suddenly. You could be sitting on the patio for a week before the mower man comes by.

So, remove the fear by setting up a check-in system with a few friends. Just send a group text by 9am each day to say â&#x20AC;&#x153;alive and wellâ&#x20AC;?.

If there is no reply, one of the group or a carer can drop in.

If you need more monitoring, you can ask the Australian Red Cross to call you regularly. They can also provide you with a personal alarm.

5. PROTECT YOUR INDEPENDENCE To live at home on your own, you need to be mentally alert. There is no one else to check if you turned the griller off. Brain training programs abound on the internet.

You can do pre-tests with these and often start with a free trial.

But donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t discount socialising. Playing card games with friends is highly beneficial. Also consider setting yourself some fun memory challenges.

See the book Memory Craft by Lynne Kelly for ideas. Your brain uses 20 per cent of your oxygen so keep it fuelled and calm with deep breathing or daily meditation.

Think positively about ageing alone.

Finding treasure after retirement Retirement is defined as the action of leaving one’s job, with an emphasis on ceasing work. That’s why STEVE MENDL doesn’t use the word retirement.

I

n the 21st century, with another 20 to 40 years to live and given both a functioning brain and reasonably able body, I don’t see leaving fulltime employment as entering retirement.

I see the transition from fulltime work as entering what some have referred to as Second Adulthood or Third Age. I refer to it as the “next age” or “next stage” of life. I use the word “stage” deliberately. We all play different roles throughout our lives.

One of my aims is to inspire you to consider what roles you would like to play in the coming years. The options are many and may be short, medium or long term in nature. The choice is yours.

Today’s workforce leavers are exiting employment earlier and remaining healthy for longer. Many will be retired for almost as many years as they worked and their lifestyles will reflect a level of activity beyond yesterday’s stereotype.

Today’s active Next-Ager has options: • Learn something new.

• Start a small business or begin consulting in an area of expertise.

• Undertake an ambitious physical fitness program.

• Work part time in a chosen industry.

• Develop an investment portfolio and play an active role in its development.

• Focus on more traditional areas of leisure – travel, sport and family.

Select activities and goals that are right for you. Formulate and carry out an action plan incorporating the ideal mix of activities to meet the goals you’ve set.

You may do part-time, casual or volunteer work; become a consultant in your chosen area of expertise; or embrace a different lifestyle, taking up new hobbies and interests, perhaps even in a different location.

You will have the opportunity to work on your health, relationships and even spiritual development.

There are no right or wrong answers.

Most people have a clear idea of where they are situated financially, but

planning for other areas of life is lacking, has been avoided or is non-existent.

BILL MCCARTHY An unusual book, a self-published autobiography by a man who has seen more misfortune than most of us, spanning many different careers including serving as a councillor and state MP. His story demonstrates how badly we treat our whistleblowers and anyone who stands up to vested interests. Throughout his life he maintained a strong moral compass, doing what he thought was right, often at his own expense. The straw that nearly broke the proverbial back was the tragic death of his wife. His slow recovery is an object lesson. However, the book is not written well, more like a stream of consciousness by PowerPoint, and I found this detracted greatly from his story.

MARY BARBER It is strange to start a book knowing the outcome. Colin Caudell has written an engaging and at times gripping memoir of his working life and the tragic death of his wife just when they were settling into life as grey nomads.

I took a few messages from this book: Childhood experiences such as bullying and illness are formative, no news there. Secondly, politics is full of rascals, no news there. Third, the hand of fate is unfair. You can be idling away enjoying your life, when out of the blue disaster strikes.

Colin Caudell had more than his share of struggles, bad luck and sadness. The final chapters of his book show he is building a courageous new life. I would recommend this book to anyone who has struggled or is struggling with loneliness, anxiety or trauma.

BOOK review

SUZI HIRST Colin Caudell’s story of his life and the tragedy of losing his wife is an easy read. Colin openly tells the story of his many ups and downs and it is a very honest tale that shows how frail and vulnerable we can be in this life.

Colin and his wife Sue were grey nomads travelling around Australia picking up odd jobs as they went.

An advert for traffic controllers in Queensland set them on the path to tragedy.

Suzanne was killed at a traffic control site by a truck travelling at over 100kms in a 40km/h zone.

Colin learnt life lessons despite all his struggles and now concentrates on the good things in his life. 5/10

PICK MYSELF UP AND DUST MYSELF OFF

A young man faced with adversity, Colin Caudell charged on to become a businessman and a state politician. Despite some critical setbacks Colin managed to pick himself up and dust himself off.

Life was wonderful – until the fateful day he saw his wife of 35 years disappear into a cloud of dust. A road worker, she was killed while directing traffic.

The tragedy engulfed his body and soul. As he struggled with PTSD, Colin embarked on a journey toward mental recovery.

Prior betrayal and mistrust heighten Colin’s resolve as he battles with politics, government agencies, and the legal system, to change laws regarding the way traffic control is conducted around the world.

JOHN KLEINSCHMIDT Colin Caudell, like many people, engaged in various life pursuits that resulted in success and failure, triumph and tragedy, at school, in the workplace and in life generally.

His experience with a petroleum company was interesting. It seems that industry has changed very little as they continue to unfairly exploit dealers and customers.

His accident and the tragic death of his wife while they were both in traffic control contributed greatly to mental health issues. I applaud his efforts to improve safety for traffic controllers but felt he might not always have used the best approach to achieve the improvements he sought.

He finishes on a positive note, finding love and contentment through social dancing. Not my preferred reading.

JO BOURKE This is an extremely detailed account of the life of Colin Caudell, building up to the tragic loss of his wife and his fight for justice and changes to the traffic controller system.

I loved Colin’s description of growing up in the early ’60s with the outback dunny and the simplicity of life in Brisbane. However, I found myself skimming over Colin’s account of his working and political life but perhaps it was necessary to paint a picture of a man who was developing a tenacity to overcome whatever life threw at him.

The grief portrayed in dealing with the loss of his wife and soul mate is tangible on the pages. Colin has poured his heart out with no holds barred. One can feel his anger at the way his attempts to make changes were so often thwarted.

It is heartening that Colin eventually found love again through a social dancing group. Some of his “matches” from online dating would be enough to make one run a mile from that particular forum.

I thank Colin for baring his soul so eloquently and wish him and Christine a long happy life together.

Colin’s biography shares his memoirs of the highs, lows and considerable achievements in his life.

Anyone born in the 1950s will connect with his billy cart boyhood in Camp Hill, Brisbane. He probably worked with my late father in 1968 at the Commonwealth Bank in Stones Corner.

I enjoyed reading about his varied careers in the petrol industry, rent-a-vehicle, local and state politics in South Australia, real estate in Caloundra and finally, as a grey nomad in Queensland, as a traffic controller.

He had a strong and loving relationship with his wife who was tragically killed. His personal grief, anxieties and depression gives the reader a good insight into PTSD. His efforts to find another partner through online dating services provides some entertaining reading.

Each adversity, tragedy, illness and accident makes him stronger and a better person. You will admire his strong sense of social justice and political machinations. 7/10

Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE), or Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, is the second most prevalent form of peripheral nerve entrapment (after median neuropathy at the wrist) and occurs when the ulnar nerve becomes compromised at the elbow.

The ulnar nerve is one of the three main nerves in the arm. It begins underneath the collarbone and travels down the inside of the arm, wrapping around the elbow and entering the hand, where it divides into two branches – the superficial branch providing sensation to the pinkie finger and medial half of the ring finger, and a deep branch providing motor supply to the remainder of the hand.

There are several potential sites of entrapment along the ulnar nerve but it is most vulnerable to compression at the elbow, where it travels through a narrow space with a lack of protective muscle.

Enlargements, tears, deformity or trauma to the elbow can all increase the nerve’s susceptibility to a UNE and/or dislocation.

UNE symptoms may include elbow pain, commonly with trauma, and an impaired sense of touch, often after prolonged or awkward positioning, such as in a sling.

Conversely, there may be no pain at all. If the UNE is severe, hand muscles can become weak and wasted. Numbness or tingling sensations of the fourth and fifth fingers also support a diagnosis of UNE. Proper neurophysiology testing is important to confirm a UNE diagnosis, rule out other conditions and determine if co-existing neuropathies are present.

Nerve conduction studies (NCS) can provide an accurate overall impression of ulnar nerve function.

Electromyography (EMG) can also be used to assess the functional effects of the injury.

We recently tested a 71-year-old woman who presented with a fracture in eight places in her right shoulder, after a fall while gardening. She presented with numbness in her fourth and fifth fingers – classic UNE symptoms – as well as a trigger finger and general weakness in her hand, which was initially likely attributed to the fracture.

It was important to determine if a UNE was present or if all of the symptoms were attributable to the fracture, whether the only site of injury was at the shoulder and whether surgery was likely to assist.

The neurologist suspected that a UNE co-existed with her fracture, as the symptoms in her fourth and fifth fingers emerged only after her elbow was kept flexed in a sling and not after the original injury.

NCS testing was conducted on her neighbouring nerves to rule out similar conditions. These were normal, rather than supporting a UNE diagnosis.

To determine if the UNE was in her shoulder or elbow, NCS was then conducted on her ulnar nerve, moving from the wrist up towards her shoulder. Results were normal from her wrist up to her mid-forearm, with poor responses at her elbow, returning to normal towards her shoulder. This indicated a clear UNE. Further EMG was not required.

Surgery was recommended, which would likely see the patient recover in full.

It was important for these tests to be performed, assuming that all of the symptoms should be attributed to the original injury. The NCS findings in this patient were also critical for correct management and an optimal long-term outcome for the patient.

Best of all, you can catch the ferry to Nelson Bay and there is a good chance you will see Dolphins on the way. While in the region, Boomerang, Blueys and Elizabeth Beaches are superb and Seal Rocks and Forster are a

“These are top entertainers that I find in Tamworth and see if they want to come. It introduces them to the western people and gets them known out there,” he says.

A coast of many colours The West Australian coastline is an eye-opening slice of country, from the tall and tidy greens of Margaret River to the bold reds of Pilbara and Kimberley.

BRUCE McMAHON recommends a long drive when WA opens its borders again.

F

lying from the east to Perth, renting a car and driving north to Broome – with side trips – over three weeks isn’t the cheapest travel experience. But it’s most rewarding and relaxing and is worth every litre of fuel and good and indifferent motel rooms along the way.

Anyway, a couple of days in Perth and Fremantle were plenty. Perth’s CBD is fine, Fremantle’s more colourful with markets, restaurants and pubs.

Three hours south is the Margaret River with fine wineries and breweries and spectacular coastline at Cape Leeuwin, Australia’s most south-westerly point and meeting place of the Indian and Southern Oceans.

There’s plenty to explore down this way – scenery, top wines and beers and food; and bigger wineries offering the choice of fine dining or drinks on lush lawns. It’d be easy to spend a good week or so down south but good light in Broome beckons and the Hertz Subaru Outback – an ideal wagon for this – is pointed north.

Highways are in good nick and there’s a welcome tidiness about WA roadsides with few hoardings. Pointers for fuel, food and accommodation are limited to official generic signage.

Lunch at the Lobster Shack in Cervantes heralds the beginning of some 3000km up Highway One with various side excursions down dirt roads such as to the Pinnacles, a natural wonder of big limestone pillars in a sea of yellow sand.

A night in Geraldton and then into Denham on Shark Bay for sunset over the Indian Ocean plus feeding dolphins at

Monkey Mia. While some jumps between highway stops can be a haul, there are numerous opportunities for breaks plus hundreds of free camp spots.

Time’s the limiting factor, so we press on from Carnarvon through to Karratha and bypass Exmouth and Onslow.

Karratha and Dampier are big business for gas and minerals but there’s also the chance to catch up with the Red Dog story of famous kelpie-cross Tally that wandered the Pilbara in the 1970s.

Port Hedland is another hot and dusty town dedicated to the mining industry yet boasts first class accommodation, and excellent food and service at the Esplanade Hotel.

Along with ever-changing scenery, this North West Coastal Highway continues to surprise with food and service, right down to affogatos on coffee menus in remote roadhouses with huge road trains parked out front.

Remember to insure against windscreen and tyre damage on hire cars, and carry some cash for isolated areas.

East to Marble Bar (worth the drive for the marbled rock) and from Port Hedland to Broome, the Pilbara fills the windscreen with deep and dramatic reds, and green-yellow spinifex running right down to white beaches.

Broome is a bustling town on the edge of the Kimberley, still with charms from sundowners at Cable Beach while camel trains saunter past, to pearl emporiums and mango beers at Matso’s brewery.

Save some time and hire a four-wheel drive to head up to Cape Leveque for a day or three to stay on the tip at Kooljaman or the Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, glamping on the edge of King Sound.

Stop in at Beagle Bay for the chapel decorated with shells before heading to Broome airport and flights back east.

Perth to Broome – and beyond – offers a very Australian experience from karri forests to bright white beaches, turquoise ocean waters and desert landscapes.

The road is good, and hospitality, food and accommodation top class. It’s well worth the drive and the dollars.

Choose your weapons and prepare for COVID-19 THERE is a lot of information flying around about what can and can’t be done to protect ourselves from COVID-19.

All the experts agree, though, that boosting immunity and making sure you are at peak health is the best weapon.

Three health professionals share their views on how to stay safe in the eye of the Coronavirus.

THE DIETITIAN Dietitian and founder of The Australian Superfood Co, Hayley Blieden: 1. Eat the rainbow: A diet high in fruit and vegetables is the best boost to the body. Also avoid processed foods 2. Exercise regularly: Even if you are feeling sick, slow movement is better than none at all.

3. Stay hydrated: Ensuring you are drinking adequate amounts of water enables your body to stay hydrated and can aid in flushing out toxins 4. Sleep: This is the time your body reboots.

5. Meditate: Enabling your mind to slow down, reduces stress on the nervous system and enables your body to function at its optimum.

6. Wash your hands: Coughing in to your shoulder or elbow, sneezing into a tissue and regularly washing your hands for a minimum of 20 seconds helps avoid germs.

A recent study by the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that supplementation with a probiotic/ vitamin C combination may be beneficial in the prevention and management of upper respiratory tract infection.

THE SLEEP EXPERT Sleep Health Foundation spokesperson, Dr Moira Junge: Hit the hay and boost your immunity. A growing body of research suggests sleep-deprived people may have suppressed immunity, potentially putting them at greater risk of catching viruses.

Sleep is now well understood to benefit immunity. An early night may be just what you need to boost your mood and immunity and help protect yourself from illness.

Those worrying about the virus are more at risk of sleep problems like insomnia. It’s a vicious cycle because if you’re sleep-deprived, you’re more likely to be anxious and when you’re anxious you’re more likely to not be able to sleep well.

Prioritise getting a good night’s sleep.

Put down your phone, close your laptop and go to sleep. If switching off a busy brain is difficult, here are some tips.

Set aside a ‘worry time’ during the evening. Use this time to think about what has been happening during the day, make plans and possible solutions.

Then don’t think about these things until the next day.

Keep the hour before bed as your wind down time – develop a routine that prepares your body and mind for sleep.

Listen to quiet music or do relaxation.

Create a favourite fantasy place or daydream of your favourite holiday spot.

If other thoughts come in, consider them for a moment and then try to gently replace them with calm thoughts.

“We know increasing numbers of people are using technologies to socialise, connect, learn, and in many cases, work or run a business.

Ensure that you keep yourself well hydrated which will keep your immune system strong.

The obvious and one of the most important is washing your hands after being out in public, especially after using public restrooms and transport.

There are numerous viruses. Many don’t have a famous name but can lead to the same symptoms or if not worse.

We live in a time of instant gratification with technology delivering everything we need instantly to our phones and other devices.

Health doesn’t work this way and we need to understand that our body will be healthiest with continued long-term love and support so that every aspect of our health, mind and body, is nurtured.

IT MAY sound like being told how to suck eggs, but with hand-washing now critical to the control of Covid-19, it seems we may not have been doing it right all these years.

Pharmacist Shoshana Eisner, who has been advising people how to wash their hands for the past 20 years, advises: • Scientific evidence is that washing your hands without soap is virtually useless in terms of killing bacteria and viruses including Coronavirus). Using some form of handwash is an absolute must.

• Do you know how often people on average people change the hand towels in their bathroom? Neither do I but I can guarantee it isn’t often enough. You may have excellent hand washing technique but can you guarantee that the person who used the towel before you does too?

• Mum was right. Now, more than ever, wash your hands often and definitely before you eat, no matter your age.

• Unless you are about to operate on someone or are immune compromised,

there appears to be little benefit to using antibacterial hand wash over regular hand wash.

• Unless you are nowhere near a tap wash your hands rather than use hand sanitiser.

• Use a good quality low-foaming/ sensitive-skin hand wash if you are prone to sensitive skin.

• Start moisturising your hands more.

Increased hand washing/sanitising does strip your skin which has the potential to generate cracks in the skins surface.

• If you are bored while washing your hands, that’s a good sign. Apparently 30 seconds is the magic number.
