I

t happened a couple of months ago, but it’s weird how the experience has stayed with me. With an armful of new-season fashion items, I was the only person lined up at the Kmart fitting rooms.

The assistant acknowledged me and waved me on through as another senior woman was exiting. That customer seemed a little flustered as she tried to sort through a similar bevy of choices. In any case, she was blocking the entry. Not a problem. I was in no hurry, so I waited patiently for her to regain her composure.

Without warning, a 20-something came up behind me, sidled past the woman at the entry and straight on through to the fitting rooms in one smoother-than-silk motion.

The assistant and I exchanged a look.

Mine said I couldn’t believe anyone could be so rude when, clearly, I was waiting (and I threw in an audible “Hmmph” for good measure!). And the assistant’s look said she’s surrounded by inconsiderate customers on busy Saturday mornings every week and there’s nothing she could do about it.

I probably should have yelled out: “Excuse me, I was next.” But it happened so fast and Miss Inconsiderate had disappeared

around the corner before my mouth and brain could get in sync.

I know one friend who wouldn’t hesitate to call out people behaving badly.

But, if you’re getting on in years, a stand-up argument with a younger person isn’t always a wise choice. So, we tend to let it slide – to everyone’s detriment.

I never really thought about seniors being invisible until I became one. Even as a child, I always spoke up with a “he/she was before me” if served out of turn at the deli.

Bars can be tricky, no matter what your age, if a better-looking drinker or regular walks up and yells out their order.

The fact is, ignoring, overlooking or failing to acknowledge someone is awful at any age. But I hear of the ‘invisible senior’ and ‘selective seeing’ often these days.

Deliberate ageism is equally as abhorrent as racism and sexism. In this month’s cover story, Carrol Baker tells it like it is, and talks with experts who outline ways of dealing with ageist behaviour.

The more we make a fuss, the more we do call it out, the more people who understand and recognise the problem, the more likely it is that change will occur.

It’s annoying to be invisible in plain sight CARROL BAKER knows what it feels like to be ignored, overlooked and passed by, simply because of ageism.

H

ave you ever felt invisible?

Believe me, it’s no superpower. In a tech shop recently, I waited patiently to be served.

Two giggling 20-somethings skimmed past me and sashayed over to the bored-looking male sales assistant. He promptly ignored me, plastered a grin on his face and served them first, while I stood quietly seething.

Ageism had reared its ugly head.

It’s a bias that leads to marginalisation and discrimination.

It can make you feel invisible and irrelevant and it’s ruled by powerful stereotypes, conjecture and harmful

assumptions. Professor, author and ageing expert Amanda Barusch says ageism is a prejudice that targets later life. She explains that it operates on two levels.

“First, job applications are ignored, services denied and respect withheld,” she says.

But as Ms Barusch points out, the most insidious is the second level: the attitude that creeps into the minds of older adults.

“To spare others the bother, we just edit ourselves out, don’t apply for the job, don’t ask for what we need and don’t rise to the next challenge because

we think we are ‘too old’,” she warns.

What do your senior years mean to you? Creaking joints, forgetfulness and feeling old? In the mirror, you see someone who doesn’t look like how you used to. You stress about losing your health and being overlooked at work.

The reality is, just about everyone is fearful of the passing of years. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Getting older, can mean enjoying newfound freedoms, hope for the future and the wisdom that comes with age.

Youthfulness isn’t perfection, although popular media and marketing hype propelled by companies with deep

pockets would lead you to believe it is.

Ageing also brings knowledge, internal strength and resilience.

There can be a quiet confidence in knowing that you’ve survived this big, beautiful, crazy world and all its joys and hardships so far.

The term ‘ageism’ was coined in 1969

by American psychologist and gerontologist Robert N Butler, who described it as systematic prejudice against older people.

It’s a complex issue, partially because it’s all encompassing.

Dr Marlene Krasovitsky, co-chair and campaign director of Every Age Counts, says ageism is widely accepted and normalised.

“It’s impossible to swim in the sea and not get wet. No one is immune,” she says.

It’s imperative to check your own internal voice. Dr Krasovitsky explains that this means challenging unhelpful assumptions.

“If I forget something, I might think I’m having a senior’s moment, or if I’m struggling to get off a chair, I might think, ‘What do I expect for my age?” she says.

“We enforce that thinking, whether consciously or unconsciously.”

There’s good reason to challenge that mindset.

Adopting a positive attitude about ageing means you’ll likely live longer.

A study of 14,000 over-50s at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health showed that people with the highest satisfaction with ageing had 43 per cent less risk of dying over a four-year period, compared with those who were the least satisfied.

Other studies by researchers at Yale and Miami universities showed you can live up to 7.5 years longer if you embrace positive ageing.

COVER STORY something to be feared, but a stage of life that is truly worth celebrating.

Let’s light a match, and watch it flicker, fuelled by the collective consciousness, to slowly blaze a trail of positive ageing attitudes.

Let’s get pro-ageing conversations happening and challenge perceived societal norms of what it means to grow older.

Margaret Morganroth Gullette, anti-ageing activist and author of Ending Ageism or How Not To Shoot People has a card as a tool of enlightenment for those who make ageist remarks or behave in an ageist way.

Part of it reads: “(Ageism) has a political and personal impact like that of racism or sexism. They marginalise, silence and deform an entire class of people.”

The words might be blunt, but the message is crystal clear.

So, too, is the effect of ageism on older Australians.

Sue Leitch, co-chair of Elder Abuse Action Australia, says ageism is not just an attitude problem: it has real and damaging impacts.

“It erodes dignity, limits choice and, in many cases, paves the way for elder abuse,” she says.

Ageism in healthcare and the workforce limits choices.

It influences self-worth and silences internal cries for justice.

In modern medicine, ageist assumptions can shape the level of clinical care offered to patients.

It’s an attitude by the medical fraternity that is far from being a soothing balm.

Ageism can serve to diminish legitimate issues. Everyday ailments and symptoms such as aches and pains or feeling tired and lethargic are often put down to simply getting older.

Dr Krasovitsky says this may have

potentially devastating repercussions.

“It can mean life-threatening and death-hastening impact if symptoms are just put down to a person’s age without proper investigation, testing and treatment,” she says.

In the workforce, older Australians are often discriminated against.

Dr Krasovitsky says comments including “past it”, “too slow”, “no good with technology” or “being greedy and hogging jobs so others can’t move up” are often the norm.

“These stereotypes only serve to marginalise and exclude,” she says.

In an age where inclusion and diversity are encouraged and celebrated, why is it still okay to make ageist jokes in a way we’d never make sexist or racist jokes?

Changing the narrative can be empowering. But to really get the message across, Dr Krasovitsky says a softly, softly approach is the way to embrace positive change.

“If you hear an ageist joke, action or comment, say you are feeling uncomfortable – start in a gentle way.

We want to bring people with us in this journey,” she says.

Find your voice and speak up.

When it comes to confronting ageism, Ms Barusch agrees it’s important to start small.

Ask questions. Why didn’t I get the promotion? Why did you serve that person first: I am standing right here?

If someone says, “You look young for your age”, it might be a complement, but scratch the surface and Ms Barusch says it’s far more insidious.

“The assumption buried in that phrase is that looking your age is something to be pitied,” she says.

“Ultimately, ageism won’t be dismantled one comeback at a time.

“It requires people of every age to call it out when we see it.”

65 YEARS OF ART REDCLIFFE Art Society (RAS) is marking 65 years next month with special festivities.

APOLLO MALE CHOIR THE Brisbane Apollo Male Choir is the longest continuously performing male choir in the state, formed 142 years ago in 1884, battling on through two world wars.

It was one of the most prestigious choirs of its time, at one stage having three active members who had been Queensland premiers. In 1886, the choir had four vice-presidents – then chief justice Sir Charles Lilley (who had been the premier from 1868 to 1870, Sir Samuel Griffith who was the premier at the time, and Sir Thomas McIlwraith who had been premier from 1879 to 1883.

The present choir regularly performs 12 to 15 concerts each year at retirement villages, aged care facilities and church and community groups in the northern suburbs and a few in the south and east.

The choir practices every Monday afternoon (1-3.30pm) in the hall behind the St Clement’s Church on the Hill, Stafford.

The 20-strong choir is always looking for members to join, regardless of singing ability. There are no auditions.

ASK just about any man or woman over the age of 60 and they’ll tell you that “when you gotta go, you gotta go”. Thank goodness Australia has a host of free public toilets councils have built in suburbs, CBDs and along highways (unlike overseas, where tourists often have to pay for the privilege).

Where to visit THE Red Dress has arrived at Museum of Brisbane, stitching together stories from around the world. This award-winning, 14-year, global community art project was conceived by British artist Kirstie Macleod. Every thread carries a compelling story expressed through embroidery. From 2009 to 2023, pieces of The Red Dress travelled the globe, being embroidered on by 367 women, 11 men and two non-binary artists from 51 countries, including refugees, asylum seekers, survivors of war and disadvantaged women worldwide. The project was initially designed to spark discussions about identity, but has evolved into a powerful platform for self-expression. he Brisbane River has always been a vital transport corridor, linking neighbourhoods and carrying people across the city in their daily lives.

In the 1960s and ’70s, that routine was often disrupted when ‘The Lilac Devil’ came to visit.

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), a South American waterborne weed – also known evocatively as the ‘The Lilac Devil’, due to its attractive purple-blue flowers – is one of the most invasive plants in the world.

Its dense root system and astonishing speed of propagation mean it can double in size week by week, given the correct conditions.

Once fully formed, it can destroy native animal and fish habitats by consuming huge amounts of oxygen and providing a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Originally brought to New South Wales as an ornamental plant in the 1890s, the weed quickly spread from Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens up the east coast. By 1900, it had brought Ipswich’s bustling Bremer River to a standstill.

Life in the slow lane

“ARRRG!” How often have I heard that exclamation or used it myself. It is the sound of frustration the world over.

And isn’t our life full of frustrations – especially for older people, expected to live in a world which is becoming stranger and faster by the day.

We have all heard that fake-friendly

voice on the phone: “Your call is important to us. One of our operators will be with you shortly.” If my call is important, why don’t they answer it? And the ‘shortly’ can take a long time.

The waiting is made worse by being ‘assaulted’ by endlessly repeated music.

Try ringing a government department, your bank, an airline, the Australian Tax Office or Centrelink, just to name a few of the worst offenders.

When you are finally connected to a human voice, it is usually the wrong person and you are thrown back into the line of waiting customers. You never get to talk to the same person twice.

I sometimes feel like a bouncing ball, thrown at random into the guaranteed wrong hands. When I was still smoking – eons ago – I would light a cigarette before one of those calls: it calmed the nerves.

Frustration is irritating, upsetting, makes you want to scream or use bad words – like when I can’t find my glasses.

They must be in the house? When I find them eventually, sitting on my head, I feel such a fool.

Making a booking for a restaurant can also be a most frustrating enterprise. It is not Joe or Mary who answer the phone but one of those infernal answering machines. I do not just want to book a table, I also want to explain that we might be late and that one of the guests is allergic to gluten. You can only hope that they get your message.

The worst thing is when I find myself frustrated to the point of being irrational. I should have known that bus No.X would not be running today, but I simply forgot.

Anyway, shouldn’t buses be reliable?

Checkouts in shopping centres are also a constant source of frustration. Not many have an express lane. You have three items and you are stuck behind a customer with a trolley overflowing, or with a checkout person who moves slower than a snail.

I get frustrated with myself when I haven’t listened to that inner voice telling me to take an umbrella. The sun was shining when I left the house, but I ignored the clouds on the horizon. So, I got wet and ended up with a cold. Arrrg!

HISTORY AWAITS AT ENOGGERA COMMUNITY DAY DID you know that there was an Enoggera police station and where it was located?

The police station opened in 1888 and over the years, some very brave men served the community.

It was their unhappy lot to attend many gruesome scenes, and to be assaulted while carrying out their duties.

The Enoggera ‘beat’ was large and

required officers to be away from home for days at a time.

ABOUT 16,000 brave souls took part in the EVA Air Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival last month.

It was my son’s first marathon: a distance of 42km. Wanting to show support for his attempt, I decided to give the 10km run a crack. I must have been caught up in the hype as I wouldn’t normally run this far voluntarily.

As the event date approached, some training was required. For my son, with full-time work and two young daughters, opportunities to train for the run were few and far between. He did his best with the precious-little spare time he had.

I’d like to say I did the same, but being away on holiday put a pause on my workouts. Although, ‘pause’ would suggest I actually started training at all. There were many excuses to defer a morning jog: too busy, too cold, too lazy. I used them all.

I attend Saturday morning parkrun when I have the chance, which meant I knew I could make 5km. My times are steadily becoming slower, but just doing that distance is an achievement these days.

Life’s an adventure

to buy a coffee. Not a bone in my body ever wanted to jog further than the 5km.

With a week to go, I came down with a nasty cold and barely felt like crawling out of bed, let alone donning my joggers.

Despite being on the Sunny Coast, the big day dawned with rainy weather.

Arriving early, I hunched against the cold breeze while trying unsuccessfully to keep my shoes dry. As is my strategy for running, I spent a good deal of the time drifting off and thinking about just about anything else. Now and then, I muttered to my limbs to just keep going.

One thing that did help were spectators shouting encouragement along the way. As my race bib bore my name, these messages felt personal. With people cheering me on, I felt obliged to keep going. I couldn’t let them down. When I crossed that finish line and saw my granddaughters with their hand-made signs, I almost cried. My son also completed his marathon, impressing his mother, who now knew how hard it was to go a quarter of that distance.

With a participation medal around my neck and my spirits high, I briefly wondered if I could do a half-marathon one day. After all, Australia’s Louise Hoskins just became the oldest gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games at the age of 76.

In an interview, she commented, “Get out there and give it a go. Don’t sit at home.

You can always do something.” Well said!

Suzuki’s all-electric offerings are well worth considering BRUCE McMAHON knows the e-Vitara has some competition – especially on price – but he is still impressed, with the Ultra interior a standout.

S

uzuki, a well-established and respected maker of economy cars, has drifted into the all-electric stakes with a more premium offering.

The five-door e-Vitara arrives in Queensland with three variants: two front-drive models and one all-wheeldrive. Other parts of the country do with just the entry-level, two-wheel-drive Motion and the fully loaded, all-wheeldrive Ultra.

Here, there’s the added choice of a two-wheel-drive e-Vitara Ultra, packing all the goodies into a middle-of-the-mob offering from $54,990 driveaway.

It’s still dear and outprices some of the Chinese competition.

Yet, this is most likely the more appealing of the electric Vitaras.

The front-drive Ultra has a wealth of safety, comfort and convenience features.

It’s comfortable, easy to drive and has a bigger claimed range – up to 426km – than the more expensive all-wheeldrive Ultra.

So, unless a family is often battling a

slippery goat track, this could be the best e-Vitara.

It’s still a pity to see Vitara’s transition from an all-out, mud-plugging, fourwheel-drive wagon with low range to today’s whisper-quiet, 61kWh batterypowered machine on low-profile rubber, but that’s the way it is.

Now, it’s about 128kW of power, 193Nm of torque and a DC rapid charge of 45 minutes to get from 10 per cent battery to 80 per cent, or about nine hours if plugging in at home.

The compact e-Vitaras measure in at a city-friendly 4.2m long by 1.8m wide on a 2.7m wheelbase, which allows for decent accommodation for four adults.

Boot space is adequate for a compact, unhindered by the need to accommodate a spare wheel. Instead, there’s a miniscule air compressor and bottle of sealant.

It’s a handsome-enough machine, if a touch ubiquitous, with a style that could possibly lead to it being confused as belonging to Kia’s stable.

run with 225/55R tyres which don’t always provide a comfortable ride on Southeast Queensland roads.

Yet the car’s suspension, road balance and general dynamics are well sorted.

Power and torque offer a smooth and decent performance, while the e-Vitara is a light and easy car to navigate down motorway, back country road or suburban street.

Helping out here are a host of safety aids such as lane-keeping assist, blindspot monitors and multiple collision braking: the Suzuki will tell you quick and lively if sensors believe it’s in any danger.

So, this is a well-behaved and sensible, all-electric compact in a tidy package – something people expect from a Suzuki.

What’s not quite so expected is the more upmarket and 21st century interior

with, in the Ultra, the likes of a floating centre console, glass roof (with sunshade), heated door mirrors, 10.25 inch multimedia touchscreen, wireless phone charger and electric driver’s seat ... even a subwoofer for the Infinity sound system.

All this accompanies the usual convenience features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an array of steering wheel controls and, unlike some Suzukis, a proper control knob for audio volume.

And so, e-Vitaras are well-considered packages that add a smart all-electric compact SUV to Suzuki’s range.

Well worth consideration, while remembering there are a number of rivals from Japan, China and Korea around these price points (and some cheaper) which also have appeal in this part of the market.

Myths about seniors’ resistance training busted

hat you’ve been told about strength training and age is probably wrong. Here’s the truth.

Resistance training remains one of the most misunderstood forms of exercise for people over 60. Myths and misconceptions keep many older adults away from one of the most effective tools for maintaining independence, managing chronic conditions and improving quality of life. Let’s set the record straight.

Myth 1: Resistance training is dangerous for older adults When performed correctly and progressively, strength training has an excellent safety record across all ages. The risk of not doing it – muscle loss, falls, frailty, reduced bone density – is far greater than the risk of doing it appropriately. Exercise physiologists are trained specifically to design safe, effective programs for people with complex health needs.

Myth 2: You need a gym and heavy weights Effective resistance training

can be done at home with resistance bands, light dumbbells or even your own body weight.

Squatting to a chair, stepping up a stair, doing wall push-ups – these are legitimate strength exercises.

It’s the principle of progressive challenge that matters, not the equipment.

Myth 3: It will bulk you up Significant muscle bulk requires very specific, highvolume training and nutritional conditions. For older adults, particularly women, the hormonal environment makes this virtually impossible without extreme effort. What resistance training does produce is lean, functional muscle that supports

your joints, improves your posture and keeps you capable.

Myth 4: Cardio is more important Cardiovascular fitness is important. But for older adults, muscle strength is arguably more critical for independence and fall prevention. The good news: many forms of strength training also provide cardiovascular benefits, especially circuit-style training.

Myth 5: If I have joint pain or a chronic condition, I shouldn’t lift Conditions such as osteoporosis demand resistance training. Weight-bearing and resistance exercise are among the most effective ways to maintain and even build bone density.

Arthritis, heart disease and diabetes also respond positively to appropriately prescribed strength training. Talk to your doctor and exercise physiologist.

Strength is not a luxury for older adults, it’s a necessity. And it’s never too late to build it.

MOST of us have a story to explain our fatigue: a demanding job, a new baby, too much screen time before bed.

But there’s a specific kind of tired that no amount of sleep fixes, and here is how you can tell the difference.

The supporters of AI say it can provide a summary of emails received, documents to be read, contracts to be understood.

Our experience of AI as lawyers is quite different.

We have seen: 1. Emails summarised incorrectly – where the meaning provided by AI is completely wrong.

2. Legislation quoted incorrectly – sometimes years out of date.

3. Cases described incorrectly – sometimes even made up.

WITH the burgeoning housing crisis, the number of people experiencing homelessness in the Sunshine Coast is predicted to take an upward trajectory in the upcoming years.

Committed to serving and walking with those experiencing homelessness, the Table of St. Francis seeks to build a ‘system of care’ for the most vulnerable in the community.

For the past three years, the grassroots charity has been providing freshly cooked meals, clothing, tents and other emergency relief items to the homeless community in Quota Memorial Park, Nambour, following an outreach model of support.

These operations rely solely on community and corporate donations.

“People experiencing homelessness are people, like you and me, who deserve compassion and the dignity of having their basic needs met,” says founder Francis Hiranil.

The Table of St. Francis plans to expand its operations with a project fittingly named ‘Compassion Mobile’. The charity is aiming to raise $50,000 to purchase and fit out two mobile food trailers, allowing volunteers to take their service wherever the need is greatest within the Coast region and beyond.

“People experiencing homelessness are often transient,” explains outreach volunteer and board member Jonard Erro.

“We want to bring the service to the people, instead of the people coming to us.”

THE Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) is a non-profit health promotion charity.

It was founded by former NSW State of Origin star and professional rugby league player Mark Hughes and his wife Kirralee in 2014 after he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

The foundation was established to address the significant lack of funding for brain cancer research in Australia, which has contributed to mortality rates remaining largely unchanged for more than 30 years.

Since launching the Beanie for Brain Cancer campaign in 2014, MHF has grown into a nationally recognised organisation, with more than one million beanies sold through its partnership with the National Rugby League.

LEAVING A GIFT

THE CLINICAL TRIAL THAT GAVE JAN A LITTLE MORE TIME WHEN Jan Mundt enrolled in a clinical trial after being diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer, she was hoping for one thing: more time with her family.

She never imagined the treatment would not only give her precious years with her family, but also contribute to a breakthrough now helping thousands of Australians facing the same disease.

Diagnosed in 2018 after seeking medical attention for persistent chest pain, the Ipswich grandmother was stunned to learn she had advanced lung cancer – despite never having smoked. The median life expectancy for people with advanced lung cancer was less than a year.

“I just remember thinking I had a two-month-old grandson I was never going to see grow up,” Jan says.

Referred to Mater Hospital Brisbane, Jan joined a Mater Research clinical trial led by Mater Cancer Care Centre director of medical oncology Dr Vikram Jain, testing a pioneering combination of immunotherapy and chemotherapy for advanced lung cancer.

More than seven years later, Jan has walked her eldest grandson through the school gates on his first day of Prep, welcomed a second grandson and celebrated family milestones she once feared she would never see.

The treatment Jan received through the clinical trial has since become a

standard treatment on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), giving eligible Australians with advanced lung cancer access to the same therapy.

Dr Jain says Jan’s experience showed how clinical trials can transform cancer care, benefiting current and future patients.

“Lung cancer treatment has come a long way in the last six years – and much of that is down to the success of clinical trials and the participation of patients like Jan,” Dr Jain says. “The treatment that Jan underwent has since become a standard treatment on the PBS.” Mater Research is conducting more than 200 clinical trials across cancer, neuroscience, women’s and babies’ health and other specialties, helping bring promising new treatments to patients while generating the evidence needed to improve healthcare.

SOME friendships take years to grow.

BRISBANE PRICES REMAIN ‘HEALTHY’

HOW ONE IDEA BECAME PART OF VILLAGE LIFE THE sound of metal boules and friendly laughter has become a familiar part of village life most afternoons at Somerset Indooroopilly.

What began as a casual conversation between residents has grown into the thriving pétanque club.

Residents Wendy Armitage and Graeme McDowall helped turn the idea into reality, working with village management and Aura Holdings to fundraise and build a purpose-built piste.

Two years on, the Somerset Pétanque Club hosts regular games in the heart of the village.

Pétanque is a French-inspired game in which players throw metal boules to land as close as possible to a small, wooden target.

The game has quickly caught on, with Graeme’s coaching helping newcomers build skills and confidence.

The club’s first winter competition in 2025 drew 14 teams, ending in a closely fought

11-9 grand final, followed by presentations and afternoon tea in the village café.

“It is fantastic to see so many residents and spectators embracing the game with such enthusiasm,” Wendy says.

This year’s season opened with light-hearted challenges.

“The biggest crowd-pleaser was lobbing a boule into a car tyre, which caused no end of frustration and amusement and was a lot harder than most players anticipated,” Wendy says.

For many residents, the club has become much more than a weekly game. It’s a chance to stay active, independent and connected at their own pace – proof that retirement living is about more than a beautiful home. It’s about finding a home that works for you, and a community where friendships grow naturally.

SALMON BLINIS WITH WHIPPED BUTTER

• September 1-30 Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Ingredients: Blinis • 150g plain flour • 2 tsp caster sugar • 3 tsp baking powder • 180ml full cream milk • 1 egg • 50g Western Star Salted Butter, melted • 350g smoked salmon.

Whipped Lemon Brown Butter • 150g Western Star Salted Butter • 1 lemon, zested *Method: In a large bowl, sift in the flour, baking powder, sugar and a pinch of salt. In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk, egg and half of the melted butter. Gradually whisk the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, until a smooth batter forms. Transfer into the fridge for 30 minutes.

While batter chills, prepare the Whipped Lemon Brown Butter. In a heavy based frying pan, melt butter. Continue to cook the butter until it starts to brown. Remove and refrigerate until completely cool.

Place the cooled butter into the bowl of a stand mixer and whip for 3-4 minutes, or until light and fluffy. Add the lemon zest and mix until combined.

Heat a large non-stick frypan over a medium heat.

Lightly brush the pan with a small amount of the remaining melted butter. Add about one tablespoon of batter to the pan and cook for 1 minute or until small bubbles appear on the surface. Flip and cook for a further 30 seconds or until cooked. Repeat with the remaining butter and batter. To serve, top the blinis with the whipped butter and smoked salmon.

The coffee harvest snapping off a dozen photos on my first sighting. But I’m unwilling to pose perilously at the pool’s edge, swimsuitclad and trailing a diaphanous scarf behind me. I hang onto my beach towel and my dignity.

After a couple of days, I discover the resort’s heart, beyond the brochure and the seductive charms of four-poster beds and private jacuzzis on villa terraces.

One morning, I take a tour with Elman to the Ecological Wastewater Treatment facility, which is far from sexy in anyone’s book, let alone that of an influencer. But it’s an important cog in the resort’s sustainability wheel, keeping it all moving and in sync with the environment.

He points out some of the tanks where wastewater is collected, aerated and filtered to irrigate the plantation and gardens during the dry season, and tells me rain and groundwater are used in the guests’ bathrooms. As we head to the EcoLab plastic recycling plant, Elman shows me the solar panels fitted atop the horse stables (yes, there are five ponies to ride), which provide 20 per cent of the resort’s electricity.

The lab is a place of manufacturing and learning: a huge thatched workspace whose walls are lined with eco-bricks: plastic bottles filled with plastic bags, which have been collected from the resort and neighbouring villages.

I meet four schoolgirls on an excursion to learn about plastic pollution and how recycled plastic can be turned into usable goods.

When it’s time to unwind, there’s that inviting pool, jacuzzis perched above the forest canopy, a siesta in my muslin-swathed, bambooframed bed and happy-hour cocktails as the sun sets.

I end my stay on a caffeinated note. Following a plantation tour with Giri, I head to the coffee hut to taste the brews lined up in readiness for my somewhat finicky tastebuds.

The Balinese take their coffee black, no sugar. So, in keeping with custom, I do likewise. I sip a range of styles, including Natural, Fully Washed, Honey, Wild Luwak and Munduk Espresso. It’s akin to wine tasting, but I’m wired up, not mellowed out.

With a flavour of 1979 Australian suburban life, the reader soon becomes enmeshed in the lives of the residents of this Canberra cul-de-sac, helpfully detailed on the front page with a list of ‘who lives where’.

Such an eclectic mix of characters is so strongly developed that the reader can’t help but be drawn to love and loathe various ones in unequal measure. As you would expect, each of these residents has views and beliefs on each other and the local happenings which are shared along the ‘grape vine’ of whispers, suspicions and accusations.

This is unlike any crime novel I’ve read before, as there is no mystery – we know right from page 1 who killed the unfortunate Antonio, leaving his foot to be discovered in the woods soon after.

As each chapter is set in different times, the author cleverly paints details of the lead-up to the gruesome crime, as well as the follow-up. By writing it in this manner, Kate Kemp very cleverly dripfeeds the facts and characters’ thoughts and feelings to the reader, ensuring it is gripping from the outset.

The unexpected twist towards the end had me laughing aloud. Bravo, Kate Kemp!

I ENJOY Australian historical fiction and Judy Nunn is my favourite author in that space.

Floodtide is set in West Australia and follows the lives of four young men through their social development, careers, successes and failures over a period of four decades.

Mike – a brilliant international environmental scientist, Spud – a rough-and-tumble business entrepreneur, Pembo – a geologist/mining magnate, and Muzza – a paraplegic victim of the Vietnam War and artist are sworn mates for life. Each follows a different path that takes us through the development of Perth, the mining boom in the Pilbara and the WA Inc. corruption era.

The family and loves of the four add interest to the story of each, as does a dreadful mishap in their university years that affects life decisions.

A long but easy and enjoyable read.

IT’S the winter of 2049 and Daniel is elderly and long isolated.

After yet another devastating storm – this time destroying his beloved longan tree – he finds his fragile peace threatened by a growing friendship with a widowed neighbour and the appearance of a young reporter digging into a shameful event buried deep in his past.

Across the autumn of 2000, the summer of 1949 and the restless springs of the mid-19th century, the tangled roots of Daniel’s family tree unfurl – to the moment an Irish orphan

finds her fate entwined with that of a Chinese bushranger.

This is a well-written literary work about a family of mixed Chinese/Irish heritage centred in Far North Queensland.

The story is told from the future, working back.

The family story is mainly told through the first-person narrative by various family members – an interesting technique.

This is exquisite writing with a strong sense of place and great character development. Well worth reading.
