F

rom a young age, I couldn’t wait to be 16. I couldn’t see past that number.

Sixteen seemed to be when every girl (especially Marcia Brady of The Brady Bunch!) suddenly turned cool.

They wore the latest fashions and hair styles, had real dates with boys, knew so much about the world and listened to the best music.

And for the first four months after my birthday, being 16 lived up to all my expectations. Life was a blank page, ready for me to start writing my story.

I was doing well in Year 11 studies, playing basketball and softball to keep fit, building the pocketmoney and bank account as a casual ‘checkout chic’ at Target Chermside, and lapping up the interest shown by certain boys.

Then my world came crashing down: my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The sweet and innocent Sixteen Going On Seventeen that The Sound of Music promised was short-lived.

If I could go back in time, I would tell myself that it’s all going to be okay. A kooky friend will get me through it. The life-long love of a good man is just over a year away.

But I also would tell her to help mum more as she navigates her own grief and unwanted new status as a widow.

In our cover story this month, journalist Janine Hill asks Queenslanders who have become household names what advice they would give their 16-year-old selves.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and we are told that with age comes wisdom.

Would they have lived their lives differently if they only knew what they know now? How much would they want to try to help their younger selves avoid the potholes, U-turns and ‘wrong way’ signs in their working or personal life? Would they attempt to minimise the heartache, grief and drama – or is that what made them what they are today?

It’s an interesting exercise. I, for one, believe in rising above what life throws at you. Only you can make lemonade from the lemons, and I am certainly grateful for the happy, safe and steady, wonderful life I have had because, well, it is uniquely me.

Whether 16, 56 or 86, living life to the fullest, with no regrets, is perhaps the best advice we can ever take on board.

And with that aim in mind, travel writer Marie Barbieri this month gives us a peek inside some swanky Las Vegas hotels where you really can live it up p (if ( money y is no object!). Enjoy the read.

I would also share that unconditional love is the meaning of life. Knowing that changes everything. It means you will always see the best in others and have gratitude for everything.

Also, do not make the mistake of thinking that kindness is weakness.

Kindness is wisdom, and you cannot have one without the other.

It’s also important to revel in your accomplishments. It’s easy to get caught up in the next urgent thing to do.

Instead, take time to celebrate the special achievements you make. You did that – party!

Today, as a 61-year-old woman, I continue to remind myself of these life lessons. After all, we are still learning every day.

You don’t have to get everything sorted ASAP and you have plenty of time.

Kick the can down the road and don’t take relationships too seriously.

When you’re a 16-year-old male, you’re not old enough to realise you’ve got plenty of time. You’re 15 years behind women socially and the reality for a male is that you haven’t got anything interesting to offer women until you’re at least 21.

I wish I just accepted that, and that things change for the better. Basically, don’t worry about it.

Your life isn’t slipping away.

At work, you feel you have to get up to speed quickly and that by 30, you should be fully developed. That’s not the case and you are best in your 50s.

When you’re young, you don’t realise that you’ve got plenty of time. You think everything has to be done now and everything is urgent and it isn’t.

Things are going to get better.

You won’t have acne for life, and a year is not a long period of time.

ALLAN PEASE, body language expert, author, speaker and Pease International chairman What would I tell my 16-year old-self? I would say, “Allan, all the goal-setting techniques that you’ll hear about, they work.

Do them all. Having deadlines and plans of action – that works, too. Do it all.”

But the one thing I’d say to him that I didn’t learn until later in life is to decide what you want, not how you’ll do it.

Most people think about how they would do something. “How do I become rich? How do I become a millionaire? Live on the beach? How could I become like Mother Teresa? How could I do … whatever?”

They can’t think of how, and so they get bogged down in the details and possibilities and, as a result, they lose motivation and the goal doesn’t happen.

Just decide what you’re going to do, not how. Say: “I’m going to do this! End of story, full stop, over and out, that’s it, that’s what I’m going to do!”, not “how will I do it?”.

But, others ask, “How would you do this, Allan?” The reality is, it doesn’t matter how.

How is none of your business. Just decide what you’re going to do, and the part of the brain called the RAS (reticular activating system) will find the how.

You’ll see the how once you’ve decided the what.

Scott Hutchinson HAYDEN KENNY, surf legend At 16, I was in the throes of leaving high school in Maryborough.

There were a lot of industries there, such as Walkers Limited shipyards and locomotive building, that needed people.

Representatives of those industries – in my case, the railway – came to the classroom and would make pitches to us.

In the railways, you could start as a lad porter and work your way up. My grandfather was working in the locomotive works. I thought, “Yeah, that must be a good job. I’ll take that up.” So, I went home and explained to my mother: “I’ve left school and I’ve got a job in the railway.”

It was a bit of a shock announcement.

She, like everyone else, thought you should finish your main education up to Grade 12.

Maryborough was a hive of activity, as far as repairs and maintenance on the railway goes. My 11 years in the railway took me to some interesting places.

The railway had a system of small sidings and towns. Ideraway, outside Gayndah, had a house where a ganger and his wife lived and she looked after the station. It was one of the first ones I got sent to. When they went on holidays, you’d get sent to relieve and your accommodation was in the goods shed, and that was where you lived for about a month.

You looked after the mail, you had to operate the little telephone exchange, and the Commonwealth Bank.

It was a bit of a unique experience until

when I went into the army at 19. They had to keep your position open when you did national service: 13 weeks initial training and then four years and nine months part-time.

Would I do anything differently?

To me, the railway was an opportunity that presented and I took it, and that became my life’s foundations. I’d probably say I should have done and discussed it more with my parents but I got an impression that the railways wanted an answer there and then.

It was a strict life. Everything was built around honesty, your handshake – different rules of living.

Even when I was going to school, if there was a funeral procession, you got off your bike and took your hat off. You never swore in the house. The house rules were made by your parents. There were penalties and maybe a bit of a clip under the ear if you did the wrong thing.

It wasn’t violence: just a wake-up call.

And you think back today and say, “I’m glad I got it because it taught me a lesson.”

BOB ANSETT, entrepreneur, Budget Rent-a-Car Australia founder My parents divorced when I was nine and I went to Wesley College in Melbourne as a live-in student for two years.

When my mum remarried to an American engineer, we sailed to California and I was immediately despatched to a military academy for another two years.

When I was 13, we moved to Vista, not far from San Diego, and I went to high school where I was exposed to a new way of learning. By 16, I had made it on to the football and baseball teams, and participated in track meets and basketball.

I got a summer job with a survey team that year, and when I finished school, I worked on an underground railway in Anchorage, Alaska. After a year in Alaska, I was called up for US military service.

After doing my training, I registered to join the paratroopers.

Ultimately, I was sent to Japan and served out my time at Far East Military Headquarters, just out of Yokohama. I took over the morning calisthenics for more than 3000 generals, officers and enlisted men at Camp Zama. During the summer, I managed the swimming pool and became knowledgeable about management in general.

Not too long after, I returned to Australia and set up Budget Rent a Car. The advice that I would pass on to my 16-year-old self is largely about ways in which to prepare myself for the future.

At the back of my mind, I had always thought of ways in which I would ultimately take over my dad’s airline. I worked hard at thinking through things I could do to prepare for this advent.

I clearly wanted to get into aviation in the US, learning about aircraft during my time in the paratroopers.

I wouldn’t change anything.

Retiree GARRY REYNOLDS shares his thoughts on the world around us.

SORRY, BUT WHAT WAS YOUR NAME AGAIN? I’VE always admired seniors who can remember names with ease.

You meet them at barbecues. After shouting your name once, in a gale, while a dog is barking, an hour later they glide back over with: “Lovely chatting earlier, Garry.”

Meanwhile, I’m standing there thinking (during the awkward silence): “Was he Noel, Neville or Neil?” before mumbling desperately, “You too, mate.”

It’s not that I don’t care about names.

I can remember the 1964 Dragons premiership-winning forward pack and every neighbour’s dog I’ve ever met.

But introduce me to a new person at a morning tea and the name evaporates before the scone plate has even reached me.

So, I decided to try to improve enough to attend a community event without living in fear of the second greeting.

The first revelation was embarrassingly simple: listen. Most of us don’t hear the name at all. We’re too busy preparing our own introduction or silently checking

whether we’ve got spinach in our teeth.

These days, I pause, look at the person and let the name land. It’s astonishing how effective basic attention can be.

Then I repeat it. “Lovely to meet you, Sandra” – not in a clingy way – and just once.

It gives my brain a fighting chance.

After that comes the fun bit: pictures.

Our brains adore them. Lily becomes an actual lily. Graham becomes a gramophone.

Mark becomes a thick, black marker pen.

Sometimes, I quietly attach the name to a feature – kindly, of course: red glasses Rachel; tall Tom; laughing Linda. They’re all little mental hooks.

And when all else fails, I’ve learned that the most powerful technique is graceful honesty: “I’m sorry. Remind me of your name.” People don’t mind being asked again.

They mind being avoided.

So, if we ever meet and I get your name wrong, just smile and forgive me. I’m trying.

Like I said, I still remember the Dragons’ 1964 grand final forward pack: Porter, Ryan, Armstrong, Rasmussen, Provan and Raper.

But there’s only so much room up there.

Life in the slow lane

I IMAGINED ‘addiction’ meant people using heroin, cocaine, prescription medication, gambling or alcohol.

I don’t take, do or use any of those (my little drink of wine at the end of the day does not count).

We are all familiar with the havoc these addictions can cause in a person’s life. I have been lucky to never have been tempted by these products. So, I am addiction-free. Or am I? Mr Google describes addiction as: “Dependence, craving, habit, weakness”.

In accordance with this, I am fully addicted – to a lot of things.

Looking at myself more critically, there are things in my life I feel I can’t do without.

I confess to Lindt chocolate being one of those things.

Then, there is that cup of coffee at the coffee shop – another habit.

Champagne is also a thing I have a weakness for, even though I only drink it on special occasions (but, let’s face it, occasions can be created at will!).

On my desk stands a little saying:

“There comes in every woman’s life a time where only a glass of champagne will help”. If nothing else, that is my excuse.

We all know about the cravings during pregnancy. My pregnancy cravings were hot potato chips.

My daughters were born in the Sixties, when the housekeeping for the week was handed out to me in cash by my loving husband.

It was a whole 10 pounds. By being very frugal, I could manage with this.

We only had money in the household budget for occasional movie tickets.

It did not, however, include a serving of hot chips at the interval (even though the whole theatre would smell of chips).

Still, even with my cravings unfulfilled, both my girls turned out all right.

My big weakness is clothes with stripes and spots. I probably should have been born a Dalmatian dog.

As soon as I see a garment with spots or stripes in a shop, I am drawn to it like a magnet.

My friends laugh and tease me about my stripe-and-spot ‘addiction’.

Seriously, the last thing I need to have is another dress with stripes but the temptation to buy it will overcome common sense.

I am always astounded – actually, worried – when I see people with their eyes ‘glued’ to their mobile phone. This is a relatively new and dangerous addiction, and I fear it will take over people’s time. Watching TV can also easily become an addiction when it takes over a big chunk of your life.

When does craving or weakness turn into a dangerous addiction?

Would we be able to recognise that point?

I feel that we have been lucky, especially the real ‘oldies’ like me, that recreational drugs were not fashionable and that we were never tempted to try them.

SOMETIMES the unexpected things that happen while on holidays are the best.

I’m not talking about delayed flights or missing luggage, but the unplanned experiences which were not on the travel brochure that end up making good anecdotes.

After a six-week European adventure, it’s those moments that I recall fondly.

People often ask, “What was the highlight?” It may be jetlag talking, but the trip was so good that I find it hard to pick a favourite.

It started with an eight-day cruise on the Danube, which was as beautiful as the travel agent promised. I certainly enjoyed the unexpected upgrade to a luxurious suite with a huge window to view the passing scenery.

However, some of the most enjoyable moments came from excursions which were not pre-booked.

For example, I didn’t expect to go to Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic and had not listed it on my travel insurance.

Not noticing this option may have been due to the lead-up to my holiday, which was spent watching news reports on whatever new havoc was happening in the Strait of Hormuz and wondering if I’d be going at all.

behind the town’s 13th century castle – where I borrowed a disc from a café and ended up throwing a frisbee in the sunshine, while everyone else browsed the souvenir stores.

With a couple of weeks to fill, I decided to go to the Cotswolds in the UK to do some walking, partly because it sounded nice and partly because I felt in need of exercise after the abundant food served on the cruise.

What I expected was to be ambling through picturesque English countryside – which was indeed the case. What I didn’t expect was to be in Blockley while a television crew set up for the filming of the program Father Brown, right outside my hotel window. But as much as I wandered by, having a stickybeak, I was not employed as an extra.

Another surprise was being invited to a game of bowls by the lovely owner of another place I stayed. I found myself in the tiny village of Bushley, playing indoor bowls with a dozen locals who, between bowling, exchanged good-natured banter.

A supper of homemade cake was

served with a hot cuppa and plenty of laughs before the game recommenced.

In the same area, I walked from Tewkesbury to my accommodation in Twyning after being told there was a trail along the banks of the Avon River.

With laden backpack, I trudged past grazing sheep for 3km, having to negotiate several stiles along the way.

The weight on my back threatened to pull me rearwards and I feared I’d land in sheep dung with legs in the air like an upturned turtle. I quickly developed my own stile-crossing style!

I ended up walking the trail several times and started to call the sheep by name. They mostly ignored me, probably because ‘Roast’, ‘Stew’ and ‘Chops’ were not their real names.

Not really a city girl, I even enjoyed a visit to London where I decided to see Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution. One of the actresses, Tamsin Heatley, took the time to chat with me before the show as it turns out she knows my daughter-in-law.

In no way did my travel plans involve meeting a real-live actress. She was lovely and to see her transformation into a Scottish character on stage was amazing.

It wasn’t all fun and games as the 1940 ‘beer riot’ took to the streets

I

n 1916, a strong temperance campaign was led by New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania to introduce a 6pm closing time for hotels as a wartime measure intended to reduce drunkenness and improve public discipline.

Queensland debated the idea but never legislated any change.

In 1923, the Sunshine State finally amended its liquor laws to require hotels to trade between 8am and 8pm, Monday to Saturday (no trade on Sundays), replacing the previous trading hours of 6am to 11pm.

Many hoteliers, believing the laws to be commercially ignorant, simply disobeyed the mandated curfew – most without consequence.

The serving of ‘sly grog’ had become a tolerated grey area that kept drinkers happy and hotels profitable.

In late 1940, however, authorities decided to crack down. Police began actively enforcing liquor laws in Brisbane hotels and, in particular, the 8pm close.

By this time, Brisbane had become a major wartime training and transit centre for troops – including Australian

On Saturday, October 26, tensions broke. Just after 8pm, a group of soldiers was ordered out of a Queen Street hotel in which they had been enjoying some beers.

A few began scuffling on the footpath.

A passing police officer, trying to intervene, only made things worse and, before long, hundreds of other soldiers and civilians had joined the fray. As it became clear a full-blown riot was developing, scores of civilian and military police poured into Brisbane’s CBD. By the time the initial riot was quelled more than four hours later, “hundreds of pounds worth” of plate glass windows and doors from the Grand Central and His Majesty’s hotels had been smashed, a beer keg rolled down Queen Street (reportedly accompanied by strains of Roll Out the Barrel) and trams appropriated by soldiers chanting: “We want beer!”.

At midnight, there remained “fully 5000 people still congregated in Queen

Street”. By 2am, the soldiers had been shepherded onto Adelaide Street and taken back to military camps.

There was disciplinary fallouts from the riot, but it did lead to the installation of ‘wet’ canteens in AIF camps only a few weeks later, and an extension to general hotel opening hours to 10pm by December the same year.

That in turns helps to reduce feelings of anxiety and loneliness, while encouraging interaction and emotional comfort for participants.

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery says he is pleased the council was able to acquire the robotic companions as part of efforts to provide inclusive programs for those with the condition.

“People living with dementia and their carers often experience significant social isolation as a result of their diagnosis. So, coming to the library and interacting with other people through a fun and playful activity like this can assist in improved

THINKING about your health is a great thing to do daily.

I don’t mean to ponder the fact that you can no longer run as fast as you once did. Or perhaps you can no longer run and do the physical things you used to.

Lifting, pulling, reaching and all the normal things we may have done regularly may not be done to the same intensity – perhaps not even done at all.

What I mean by “think about your health” is to concentrate on what you can do and try as much as possible to continue to do it for as long as possible.

Can you or do you still use stairs, walk every day, play pickleball, ride your bike or attend aerobics or aquarobics sessions?

Are you still playing bowls, tennis or gateball? If you are, well done.

Keep up the good work.

I know of a woman who was slowly going blind but she continued to play golf.

People with visual impairment can play golf with the aid of a personal guide who directs them to the ball and on

hether it’s been months or years, the path back to exercise is simpler than you think.

Sometimes life gets in the way. Illness, injury, a difficult season or simply losing the habit — there are countless reasons people step back from regular exercise. And the longer the break, the more daunting the return can feel.

But here’s what matters most: where you’re starting from is less important than the fact that you’re starting.

Even a few weeks of inactivity leads to measurable changes: reduced muscle strength, lower cardiovascular fitness and decreased flexibility.

After months or years, these changes are more significant.

But the body has a remarkable capacity to respond to exercise, regardless of age or how long the break has been.

The science is clear: people in their 60s, 70s and 80s who begin or return to exercise see substantial improvements in

strength, fitness and function.

The enthusiasm of returning is wonderful, but doing too much too soon is the most reliable way to end up injured or discouraged.

Your motivation is ahead of where your body currently is.

The goal in the first few weeks is not fitness: it is re-establishing the habit, letting your joints and muscles adapt and building a base to work from.

Start with frequency over intensity. Three short sessions per week of gentle movement — even 15 to 20 minutes — is more valuable than one hard session.

Walking is an excellent starting point. Bodyweight

movements, stretching and balance exercises are also ideal in the early stages.

Progress gradually. A useful rule of thumb is to increase volume or intensity by no more than 10 per cent per week. This gives your body time to adapt without breaking down.

If you have existing health conditions — perhaps heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis or joint problems — it is worth speaking with a professional before you begin.

They can assess where you are, identify any considerations and design a program that is safe and effective for you.

The hardest part is always the beginning. Once movement becomes a regular part of your week again, the benefits compound: more energy, better sleep, stronger muscles and improved mood. Start small, start smart and trust the process.

Recently, I met a 70-year-old lady who still does small triathlons. She told me: ”I come last every time but I love being able to still swim, run and cycle.”

Here’s what items to delete first when your phone is full EDIN READ takes us step by step for how to best manage storage but still keep precious memories and important information safe.

ew things are more frustrating than seeing a message that says your phone storage is full.

Suddenly, you cannot take another photo, install an update or download an app.

The good news is that this usually does not mean you need a new phone.

In most cases, a careful clean-up can free up plenty of space.

The first step is to see what is using your storage. On an iPhone, go to Settings, General, iPhone Storage. On most Android phones, go to Settings, Storage.

Your phone will show you which categories such as photos, videos, apps, messages or downloads are taking up the most room. Photos and videos are often the biggest culprits. Modern phones take excellent pictures, but those files (especially videos) can be quite large.

Start by removing blurry photos, accidental screenshots, duplicate images and videos you no longer need. It is also worth checking for long videos, as just a few of these can take up a surprising

amount of space. Be aware that deleting a photo does not always remove it straight away.

On an iPhone, deleted photos usually move to the Recently Deleted album, where they can stay for up to 30 days.

Android phones may have a Bin or Trash folder that works in a similar way.

Emptying this folder can free up space immediately, but only do this once you are certain there is nothing there you want to keep.

Next, look at your apps. Many people have apps they downloaded once and have not opened in years. On an iPhone, you can use the Offload Unused Apps option. This removes the app itself but keeps its documents and settings, so you can reinstall it later. On Android, you can uninstall apps you no longer use. If you are unsure about an app, leave it alone until you know what it does.

Downloads are another common hiding place for old files. These might include restaurant menus, tickets, instruction manuals, email attachments

and documents you only needed once.

Check the Files app on an iPhone or the Downloads folder on an Android phone. Removing old, replaceable files is one of the safest ways to make room.

Messaging apps can also use a lot of storage. Photos, videos and voice messages sent through Messages, WhatsApp or Messenger may remain on your phone long after you have looked at them. Check for large attachments and delete anything you no longer need. The same applies to downloaded podcasts, music, movies and television programs.

Try to avoid installing random ‘phone cleaner’ apps. Some are helpful, but others use alarming warnings, excessive advertising or expensive subscriptions.

Your phone already includes useful storage tools: these are usually the safest place to start.

A simple rule is to delete what is replaceable first. Unused apps, old downloads and unwanted videos can usually go before family photos, contacts or personal documents. Take your time, check your backup and avoid deleting anything you are unsure about.

A full phone can feel stressful, but it is often easier to fix than it first appears.

With a little patience, you may be able to free up enough space to keep your phone working well for a long time yet.

When a couple of librarians are drawn to each other by their shared passion for reading and preservation of the wealth that books hold, little do these young women know how their lives could soon be torn apart by the cruelties of war.

With Dorotha returned to her native Poland and the horrors for the Jews inflicted by Nazi occupation and Joyce in the middle of London’s Blitz, the thread binding them seems shattered.

What remains steadfast is their solid belief that books can be a salvation when all other hope seems gone. With extraordinary courage, each in their own way sets about finding ways to bring library books to the displaced people – Dorotha in the ghastly Polish ghetto and Joyce to the thousands sheltering in London Underground stations.

Despite how graphically the evils of this time in history are depicted, I found myself compelled to keep reading to the very satisfying end. What I look for in a great book – strong female characters demonstrating resilience in incredible difficulties, while retaining the love that only strong friendship can generate – was within these pages in spades.

FAULT Line is a little different within its genre, devoting a great deal of time to the development of its central characters: estranged brothers Alex, a patent lawyer, and Ben, a cynical elite Black Ops soldier.

A client of Alex who has developed a state-of-the-art encryption system with potential as a cyber weapon is murdered.

With his knowledge of the system, Alex is exposed to great danger.

After an attempt on Alex’s life and despite their backstory of family differences, Ben steps in to protect his brother.

The plot is uncomplicated, with some satisfying twists at the end.

What gives this novel depth is the characters and the moral ambiguity of Ben and the government organisation he works for.

A little slow at times, gripping at others, but, nonetheless, a very worthwhile read.

The MX-5 might make no sense – but it’s heaps of fun BRUCE McMAHON realises you may need to have deep pockets to buy one, but this two-seater roadster has plenty of character and charm.

(these levers, goes the joke, are great anti-theft devices in an age when most vehicles run with automatic transmissions – though you could have one here if you wanted).

And, just like in old-school sportsters, the biggest dashboard instrument, right in the driver’s face, is a tachometer to monitor the quick-revving 2-litre engine and 135kW which arrives at a sparkling 7000rpm.

Torque, the force that gets the rear-drive Mazda off the line, is rated at 205Nm at 4000rpm.

Maybe the MX-5 doesn’t boast big numbers, but weighing in just over a tonne, there’s decent power-to-weight and, with the Mazda engineers’ attention to handling and road-holding dynamics, this is one quick-enough-for-Australianlimits machine.

Here is a very agile vehicle: a proper sports car which allows a committed driver to use as much power as he or she sees fit to attack mountain roads.

Now, something like a well-handled

azda offers a fair range of sensible machines – from workhorses to premium SUVs – but the brightest star remains the impractical MX-5 roadster.

It’s the Lotto car.

The two-seater, soft-top MX-5 has been around for a time.

Its longevity is thanks to its lightweight charms, subtle evolution since 1989 and precious few rivals.

So, despite this Japanese roadster being of little use for family motoring or general transport duties, despite it being a snug fit for full-sized adults, and despite price tags heading north from around $43,000, this is a gem of a car.

It is very much fit for purpose – like Suzuki’s pint-sized Jimny.

Drop the top and drop down into the cockpit (please practice egress technique before exiting the cabin in front of a crowd) and the Mazda fits like a glove.

Everything is to hand, including the option of a six-speed manual gearbox and handbrake lever, just like the old days

V8 Mustang may well eat up twisting kilometres faster but there’s no denying the thrills of a well-placed MX-5 turning into, and exiting, a fast corner (this is aided by low-profile, 17-inch tyres – not always great for ride comfort in Southeast Queensland).

The Mazda points in with authority, holds its line and punches out with fair speed.

Snick-snick-snicking through the manual gearbox is a most agreeable throwback to more open-minded motoring when drivers had to appreciate the nuances of particular machines.

Careful, fuel-crisis driving could see around 7 litres per 100km.

Hustle the MX-5 along and that can blow out to 10 litres per 100km or more.

But here’s the thing: even putt-putting down to the shops can be fun.

There’s all the modern-day comforts and conveniences such as a touchscreen

for infotainment, a decent stereo system, phone hook-ups, blind-spot monitoring, rain-sensing wipers and rear parking sensors.

All iterations of the MX-5 have been cute or handsome.

This current generation arguably carries the smartest, most purposeful of roadster styles to date, roof up or down.

The top can be lowered and stored with ease and there’s just the one handle when it’s raised to lock it into place.

All this ... and still room for a weekend’s luggage.

It’s well worth taking an extra Lotto ticket for one this week.

So, the Mazda MX-5 has sporting character and charms not always evident in today’s motoring world.

We’re much more sensible these days … even if we’re worse drivers than when folk had some understanding of a motor vehicle’s dynamics.

DOWNSIZING: LOOK BACK AND STEP FORWARD ONE of the most effective starting points to downsizing is found in looking back.

Take the time to remember what it was like when you first moved out of the family home to live in a unit or house with mates, just like in the TV sitcom Friends.

Remember how you were chasing the freedom and fun of living independently?

Remember how you only needed a certain amount of space since you were actually looking for lifestyle? Remember how location was important, close to restaurants, night spots and the beach?

Remember how you could get by with the minimum of ‘stuff’ and still live and love life? You didn’t need much.

Nothing much has changed. You can still choose to live like that. If you can look past where you’ve come to – the amount of furniture you have acquired, the ornaments you’ve collected, the crockery you’ve treasured – and lay yourself bare, you’ll find the starting point to downsizing.

It’s those overwhelming thoughts of “how can we possibly fit all our possessions into a three-bedroom/two-bathroom unit or townhouse?”.

The fact is, you can’t, and there’s every chance you don’t need to. You really need to get your mind around that first. Once you have, there are many strategies to successfully downsizing.

Start by being honest with yourself as you move through the home and see the ‘stuff’ you haven’t used for years.

Begin in the kitchen and be brutally honest about the crockery you possess, the cutlery you store, the bowls, pots and pans you have. Dig and delve, pause and reflect.

Move along to the garage and look at the gear you don’t take off the shelf anymore – water skis, gym equipment, the surfboards/golf clubs.

The bedroom and hallway cupboards will reveal even more regarding how little you need to get by as you recognise things you haven’t set eyes on for years.

Another very important thing to look back on is the amount of maintenance that big home has required over the years, not just in the dollar amount but in blood, sweat and tears. Think about the weekends in the garden when you could have been relaxing over a long Sunday lunch overlooking the water somewhere. Looking back on all this will motivate you to move forward into a decision to downsize.

Finally, make sure you take the time to reflect on the many happy times. They are precious memories and you can take them with you when you make this next move.

They don’t take up any space to store and you can call on them whenever you want.

A GREAT-grandmother, former fashion model and video shop owner has celebrated 100 years of life, love, laughter and cherished memories.

Helen Whitney, a resident of the Carinity Cedarbrook aged care on the Gold Coast for the past eight years, turned 100 on July 2. She was born in Smithton, in north-west Tasmania, to Eric and Edith Anthony in 1926 – one of 13 children: seven boys and six girls.

While growing up, she attended schools in Latrobe, near Devonport, and loved to play netball. At 21, Helen married the love of her life, John Henry Whitney. They were wed on January 17, 1948, in Devonport. Helen and John welcomed their first-born daughter the same year.

The couple went on to have a further five children. John and his brother Maurice owned and operated a fish and chip shop in Devonport where Helen often helped out. She also worked as a Robinson’s Photography Studio receptionist.

She loved knitting and gardening and in more recent years has enjoyed reading gossip magazines, especially stories about the British royal family. She has always been passionate about fashion.

“Helen loved fashion and always dressed and presented immaculately,” her daughter Annette Green says.

“Her love of fashion led to her modelling for fashion boutiques across

From Devonport to Smithton, near the north-western tip of Tasmania, to Leongatha in Victoria, they settled in Toowoomba in 1972 where they owned and operated a video store and John went into real estate. The family had many summer holidays in Noosa. In retirement, Helen and John moved to the Gold Coast.

They spent the remainder of their time together enjoying the beaches and watching their family expand to eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Conveyancing technology and requirements continue to update

T

he Commonwealth recently introduced onerous requirements for lawyers and conveyancers in relation to clients buying and selling properties.

The Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter-Terrorism Financing (CTF) laws came into place on July 1. They impose significant identity requirements

for clients in any buying or selling transaction, as well as a risk analysis of each party by the conveyancers as to whether they could be involved in money laundering and/or terrorism financing.

Our clients are buying into retirement villages or over-50s resorts (and often selling their homes to fund the purchase).

In our experience, they are not in the

practice of channelling money to terrorists or acting as a front for Russian gangsters, but (somewhat excessively) all transactions must comply with the AML and CTF regime. It increases work for clients and lawyers.

This is an added part of the electronic way conveyancing is done these days.

Those of us who have bought and sold properties over the years would be familiar with the traditional way a settlement happened: all the parties, usually through solicitors and the banks, met in a room and handed around signed transfer and stamp duty documents, new mortgages, old mortgages releases and bank cheques to complete the settlement.

Once that occurred, the physical documents were sent off to the Titles Office for lodgement and registration, and the parties rushed off to the bank to deposit their cheques before the banks closed.

Not anymore. Transfers of real estate are now handled via an electronic platform known as Pexa. Until recently, electronic settlements were optional. Now, they are compulsory. INSURERS REVEAL AUSTRALIA’S RISKIEST DRIVERS (AND HOW TO AVOID PAYING MORE THAN YOU SHOULD) WHEN it comes to insurance, it turns out age isn’t just a number.

New research from Compare the Market shows drivers in high-risk age groups could pay up to $1200 more than motorists deemed to be less risky.

New road users – 17-year-olds on a P1 provisional licence – had the highest average insurance premium of all age groups ($3897).

They pay about $580 more on average than a 16-year-old learner, who may be less likely to have an accident by driving under supervision.

The data shows premiums generally fall as drivers mature and gain experience.

Average costs dropped by around $1000 for 18-year-olds with a P2 licence and improved each year thereafter until drivers hit 64.

From there, driver premiums gradually rise again and reach a peak at age 99.

The comparison experts analysed quotes from eight comprehensive car insurance brands for example drivers aged between 16 and 99 years old with the same vehicle model and other driver profile details.

Compare the Market’s economic director David Koch says today’s pricing decisions are usually influenced by yesterday’s claims.

“They say the best predictor of the future is the past, and basically every time someone makes a claim it adds to the tapestry of data insurers use to calculate future risk,” Mr Koch says.

“Young drivers starting out on their provisional licence are less experienced on the roads and statistically much more likely to be in a serious crash.

“The higher the risk of an accident, the higher the premium.”

While drivers can’t change their age, Mr Koch says drivers in potentially risky groups may still be able to save by shopping around.

“All insurers have different

risk appetites, and some will even cater to higher risk groups,” he says.

“That means that while premiums for younger and older drivers may be more expensive on average, there were often much cheaper premiums available.

“In one case, we found a $1219 difference between quoted premiums for a 17-year-old P-plater.

“That’s not a bad bit of pocketmoney for 15 minutes of legwork.”

Ways for mature-aged drivers to save include restricting the driver age and adjusting the excess.

GRANDPARENTING WITH BENEFITS AUSTRALIAN grandparents provide billions of dollars’ worth of unpaid childcare each year.

While it is undeniable that parents and children benefit immensely from the practical and emotional support that this older generation provides, emerging evidence suggests that grandparenting may also offer important benefits for grandma and grandad.

Caring for grandchildren can be a socially and mentally stimulating role. It may involve having conversations, planning activities, helping with homework and responding to a child’s changing needs. These activities draw on a broad range of cognitive and social skills. They may help support cognitive health in later life.

A recent study examined data from more than 1700 adults aged 50 years and older who participated in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.

Grandparents who cared for grandchildren performed better on measures of memory and executive functioning than those who did not provide care. Among grandmothers, providing care was also associated with slower cognitive decline over time. But providing more hours of care was not necessarily associated with better cognitive functioning.

Instead, what grandparents did with their grandchildren appeared to matter. Grandparents involved in activities such as leisure pursuits and helping with homework tended to perform better on cognitive tasks.

Dr Sarah Grainger and her team at the University of Queensland are leading a world-first study examining how social cognitive abilities, such as empathy and understanding others’ emotions, change across older adulthood. The team is exploring whether everyday social roles and experiences, including involvement with grandchildren, are associated with social and cognitive functioning in later life.

COTALITY’S recent report showed June saw the biggest monthly fall in national housing values since 2022.

Values fell 0.4 per cent, with Sydney and Melbourne leading the way.

Growth in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide slowed.

Many economists are expecting housing conditions to remain soft in the months ahead due to interest rates and tax policy changes, among other factors.

Sydney and Melbourne values fell 1.2 per cent and 1 per cent respectively.

The once ‘booming’ Brisbane and Perth prices rose, but at a much slower pace. Adelaide was flat.

Cotality’s research director Tim Lawless confirmed what we suspected: that a lot of buyers “are reluctant to buy into a marketplace when they are fearful that prices might be going backwards”.

That’s why Brisbane’s auction clearance rates are down, as are open-home attendance rates, resulting

in properties remaining on the market longer.

At the time of writing, Brisbane’s auction clearance rate – the percentage of auctions ending with a successful bid – was 43 per cent one week, up from 23.5 per cent for the previous week, but still 20 per cent less than last year, which was 63 per cent.

The number of properties listed for sale was up 25 per cent. However, this was not because more people were selling but because properties were taking longer to sell.

It is always critical to investigate a real estate agent’s employment background before making a final selection decision. This will reveal experience and expertise.

It is also critical to select agents who have achieved success in sellers’ and buyers’ markets, especially considering the market we are now experiencing.

I’m so over watching TV and vegging out – even on holidays CHARLIE GRIFFITHS soon realises that the life of a couch potato is not only tiring, it easily becomes tiresome, too.

I

was sitting on the couch, laptop perched on my quads, eyes wandering around the room, wondering why I even turned the computer on.

I exclaimed to my wife, in the tone of a six-year-old toward the end of the excruciating summer holidays: “I’m bored!”

Without moving her head from whatever fascinating program had her transfixed to her iPad came the emotionless response: “Why are you bored?”

I didn’t know if this was a rhetorical question, but since it showed minutely more interest than “that’s nice, dear”, I thought I should attempt to keep the conversation moving.

“I think I’ve over-vegged.”

Barb’s instant animated reaction was, “That’s bloody obvious! What are you going to do about it?”

Let me explain. After months of hectic report writing to meet critical deadlines, the company I consult to recognised signs of burnout and suggested that I take advantage of a quiet time and take two weeks off to smell the roses.

Normally, under these circumstances, I plunge headfirst into personal projects such as building a deck, erecting a fence, pruning trees and other outdoor activities that improve my physical and mental fitness. But the weather forecast promised persistent wind and rain. So, I made the outof-character decision to explore the mysterious world of the couch potato.

I had all the necessary tools to conduct my experiment: a comfy recliner, a 60-inch TV screen, Netflix and Foxtel accounts, Starlink unlimited internet, a smartphone, laptop and a fridge full of goodies.

I had no distractions since Barb was working. The lounge room was my oyster.

Sliding out of bed sometime midmorning seemed the appropriate starting point. Then, a long hot shower to thaw my muscles that had contorted after 10 hours of immobility, a breakfast of reheated leftovers and mount the recliner.

“Let’s see what that mad bastard did overnight?” was my first mission. Then, hopefully catch gorgeous Justine’s Gourmet Chef for some culinary inspiration before …

whatever. I watched some thoughtprovoking UFO documentaries, a couple of true-life murder mysteries, a heap of cooking shows and wore out the scroll button on my remote trying to avoid the mountain of utter crap that the commercial world mistakenly believed would benefit my life and wellbeing.

At 4.30pm, guilt would tug at my toes.

So, last night’s dishes would be washed before Barb’s return. If she was lucky, I might attempt one of Jamie’s or Justine’s simpler recipes before settling in to an evening of viewing.

It is amazing how tired I was after a day of solid inactivity, retiring by 8.30pm for another night of restless discomfort.

I realised after a week of consciously inducing a vegetative state that my brain

and my body were devoid of energy and inspiration. I tried to motivate myself by venturing into a shed that houses all manner of fun distractions: drum kit, dart board, exercise bike and workshop. In no time, hunger drew me back into the house.

The TV went on while I was reheating a quick meal. Then, the cycle repeated.

My conclusion is that Couch Potato Kingdom is a very dark place and lounge lizards are a doomed species.

I resolve to return to my active life where aches and pains remind me of achievements, my brain no longer wallows aimlessly in a sea of sludge, and I never again utter: “I’m bored.”

Formed in Melbourne in the early 1960s, The Seekers achieved extraordinary international success, becoming one of the first Australian groups to top charts in the UK and the US. Their clean harmonies, folk-pop sound and distinctive lead vocals captured global attention at a time when few Australian acts had broken through overseas.

At the centre of their success was the unforgettable voice of Judith Durham, whose clarity, warmth and musicality became synonymous with their sound.

And beside Barron Hilton’s statue of ‘The King of Rock’n’Roll’ is an equally charismatic (but living and breathing) gentleman named Gordon Prouty.

The hotel’s welcoming vice-president of public relations stands immaculately dressed in a plum-pink suit and pastelpink and white floral shoes that match his tie and pocket square. ‘Flash Gordon’ then takes me backstage.

The Westgate was opened as The International Hotel on July 2, 1969,

by Kirk Kerkorian. The 30-storey resort hotel (later, Las Vegas Hilton) showcased greats such as Johnny Cash, The Righteous Brothers, Aretha Franklin, Brooks & Dunn and Kenny Rogers. But it’s particularly famous for Elvis’ sevenyear residency.

“Opening night on 31st July, 1969, took place in Showroom Internationale (later renamed International Theater),” Gordon says.

“Elvis hadn’t performed live on stage for eight years. He sang his not-yetreleased Suspicious Minds. And after that, each of his 636 shows were sold out.”

“In my book, It’s showtime!, I share behind-the-scenes stories from my backstage perspective working on Elvis’s stage,” he says, handing me the gift.

We head to the dizzying decadence of the 30th floor via an elaborate goldstencilled elevator, internally ornamented with prize artworks.

Entering the 1226sqm Imperial Sky Villa reveals frescoed walls and ceilings, lion-headed chairs and columned hallways.

Although heavily altered and extended over the years, the suite was David Stanley, stepbrother to Elvis Presley “It was the largest showroom at the time, seating up to 2000 in the largest hotel in Las Vegas,” Gordon says.

He introduces me to Craig Hayes, the theatre’s head stage carpenter.

With props wedged under his armpit, he reminisces.

“My dad was here on Elvis’s opening night. And I’ve now worked here for more than 30 years,” he says.

“By the way, right where you’re standing is where Elvis always entered ‘stage left’.

“There would be someone with a flashlight there. That was my dad.”

The giant candelabra chandelier above plush sofas and a thick-pile rug is of unparalleled elegance.

And by the grand fireplace is where Elvis had his bed.

At the time of my visit, the suite was displaying nostalgic imagery for the hotel’s ‘Year of Elvis’ celebrations. The grand homage marked what would have been Elvis’s 90th year. And it can be rented for, ahem, US$20,000 per night.

It’s the closest I’ll ever get to touching Elvis when a hand reaches out to shake mine.

My emotions once again surge.

David Stanley’s mother married Vernon Presley after Elvis lost his mother. And he leads the My Brother Elvis experience at Westgate, comprising backstage tours to include intimate audience talks about working with his brother at the theatre.

“I worked on Elvis shows for five years when the hotel was the Las Vegas Hilton,” he tells me.

He’s also authored several books on growing up with the Presleys.

“I still feel my brother’s presence here.

Even right now,” he says, pulling from his pocket a photo of him and Elvis in 1972.
