H

aving downsized from a five-bedroom family home to a three-bedroom apartment to a two-bedroom apartment, I am all too well aware of the challenges.

There are two sides to the equation, the emotional and the physical. Add to that the financial and social factors and it is quite a mix to be dealt with, however I am living proof that it can be done ... sort of.

Packing up memories is probably the hardest, yet it is quite remarkable how much “stuff” can be accumulated over a lifetime. As a natural-born hoarder, there was a lot of work to be done. And it’s ongoing. I must confess to having a few little pockets of storage packed with the things I didn’t

Contents quite know what to do with, such as children’s books, old letters, photographs (ugh! a story in itself), mother’s prized silverware, a dinner service for eight (I don’t even have a table to seat eight these days) and various collections of teaspoons and kitsch crockery. I have been threatening to put the latter on eBay for years and still not quite made it.

Add to that the books and memories put aside for children who are not ready to take them and it’s little wonder I despair. Perhaps if I leave it long enough, the kids can just throw it all out and it won’t matter.

Lorraine Page looks at some of the practicalities of downsizing this month, although even after five years I’m still not finding the promised leisure she mentions. That time still goes to trying to clear the decks of old treasures. It has to go though, as my next downsize will be to a van for a long trip around Australia and there’s surely no room for junk, I mean old collections, there.

Movin’ on down – the joys and challenges of downsizing Making the transition to a smaller, more practical home can make more time for leisure, but it can also be overwhelming, as LORRAINE PAGE reports.

I

t’s usually later in life that our thoughts turn to finding a more manageable abode to hang our hat, which is why I remember the day my best friend announced she was buying her first home.

I was impressed. Belinda was barely 40 at the time of her epiphany and not one to plan ahead, yet, she’d deliberately chosen a modest two-bedroom home she could age in while staving off future downsizing moves for quite some time.

More than 10 years later, buying into a complex of single-storey villas that back on to a nature reserve and has the breathing space of acreage sits well with her.

she says. “I found a lovely townhouse with a semi-rural outlook and a large courtyard for my dog.

“I tended to think that I would gallivant around the world while renting this place out, then come back to it when old and doddery and grateful for singlelevel living. I seem to have completely bypassed the gallivanting thing.”

Her family also plugged the convenience of buying a home with very little upkeep, while Belinda weighed up conditions of ownership, building design and proximity to transport.

“My brother and his wife came and sat me down and said, ‘You don’t want to mow lawns. Get a townhouse’,” she says.

The first seed of my own downsizing light bulb moment was planted 12 years ago. My husband and I had bought a dual-living, two-storey Queenslanderstyle home with the needs of my ageing mother, Natalie, in mind.

She’d downsized a few years earlier from her family home to a small unit after a fall in the garden wrecked one of her knees.

My husband and I don’t have children so combining households seemed a good solution to her declining mobility.

From the start, the arrangement left my mother in need of companionship during the day as we both worked.

After less than a year, she wanted to be with “people of my own ilk” and bought into a retirement village leaving half of our house unused.

Although we made Mum’s old quarters our home office, I felt I was forever cleaning an oversized house that didn’t feel like a home.

As hubby and I mulled over our future, our suburb morphed before our eyes from unremarkable post-war homes into remodelled, two-storey McMansions.

All bore an uncanny resemblance to our own home.

And it wasn’t just our suburb. A cursory browse of realestate.com.au revealed that finding a modern, low-set home close to town that wasn’t in a

retirement village, or super-sized, was going to be our greatest challenge. We temporarily abandoned our search.

Brisbane real estate agent Gabrielle Trickey says clients in the 55-plus age group look for housing options that involve less land – and are notorious for clinging to their possessions.

In any one year, the proportion of older clients seeking to downsize makes up 30 per cent of her sales.

If 80-plus, they move for health or mobility reasons, or because their block is too large.

In her opinion, homeowners reduced to a single person or a couple without a strong family network, should have moved earlier.

“Nothing worse than lovely old people living in a house that they use two or three rooms of and don’t have the opportunity for a social chat with someone at least once a day,” Gabrielle says.

“These are very often vibrant, very alert folk in dark old houses.”

For older clients wanting to downsize at an affordable price, Gabrielle has little suitable housing stock because of the hills that dominate her real estate patch.

In a Federal Government push to release more property to the market and tackle housing affordability for younger families, from July 1, 2018, those over the age of 65 who downsize their home can pour up to $300,000 of the proceeds into their superannuation fund.

They must have owned their principal place of residence for 10 years.

The government is hoping this incentive will encourage some people to downsize into housing that is more suited to their needs; presumably in retirement

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unlikely many older Australians will take up the offer, as any change in a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s super balance as a result of this measure will count towards the Age Pension assets test.

Of those who have made the decision to move into a retirement village outside their locality, Gabrielle Trickey says they are very happy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I visit my clients who we have acted for in the sale of their homes,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once they move to a retirement home they are healthier, put on weight, and are able to chat and become more active. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s even better if thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a high care part to the village so that a couple can still see each other if one has a fall.â&#x20AC;?

According to the Retirement Living Council, the peak body for retirement villages, more than 184,000 Australians over 65 call a retirement village home.

More than 90 per cent of those residents indicate that village life meets or exceeds their expectations.

Additional figures suggest that improved wellbeing leads to significantly fewer government funded home-care packages than received by those who live at home in a private residence.

In their mid-60s, and on the cusp of retirement, Jan and Graham intentionally bypassed retirement villages when they downsized earlier this year from a large house in a Gold Coast eco village to an inner-city, two-bedroom apartment.

As Jan talks, the Wheel of Brisbane turns slowly behind her in the immediate distance and she agrees their 13th floor balcony view of the city skyline is nothing short of spectacular. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we decided to move it shocked everybody in the village because lots of those people said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll carry me out of here in a box!â&#x20AC;&#x2122;,â&#x20AC;? she says.

Peace of mind at a great price

â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the eco village there were lots of babies born and there were children of all ages. However, my mum was in a retirement village. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like it that her neighbours were her age. They love these bus trips and things. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a groupie.â&#x20AC;?

Visitors to the eco village found it idyllic, and although Jan and Graham say they enjoyed the communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s social side, after seven years both needed more intellectual stimulation.

The seed to move took root when Jan realised she was driving everywhere from the village, even just to buy a loaf of bread. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we came up for opera weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d stay in a hotel in Brisbane and have our little holiday weekend,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All of a sudden it was like, what about if we lived here?â&#x20AC;?

Jan â&#x20AC;&#x153;obsessivelyâ&#x20AC;? followed the Japanese-inspired KonMari method of decluttering and organising to downsize their possessions, but couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t part with their 1920s pianola or her classic 1961 Volkswagon Karmann Ghia.

These days thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s little need for her to drive. Supermarkets, churches, the performing arts, libraries and a park large enough for her grandchildren to kick a ball around are just a short walk from their apartment block.

Lee Janssen, Sunshine Coast-based managing director of Avalon Granny Flats, says more people are enquiring about his custom-built and kit granny flat homes as the industry evolves and responds to the rising cost of living and housing affordability. â&#x20AC;&#x153;More people are open to moving into a granny flat than they were 10 years ago,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Normally we deal with homeowners in the 40 to 60-years age bracket, either building for their parents or for an investment for the kids.â&#x20AC;?

The majority of residential homes are

legally allowed to put a secondary dwelling on their property. However, the rules governing occupancy vary from state to state and from council to council.

The site itself, Lee says, is the biggest variable in terms of how the dwelling is built.

Eight years ago, retired aged care nurse, Patricia, 63, received a shock diagnosis of breast cancer that changed the direction of her life.

When her daughter and son-in-law were offered work in Brisbane three years ago, Patricia sold her unit and moved with them from Victoria.

Her family bought a large house block in the north-western outskirts of Brisbane where they built a principal residence and an adjoining granny flat.

Parting with her independence and moving in with family on a life tenancy basis hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been easy, Patricia says.

Decisions have to be conferred, as both homes share a spare bedroom and laundry, and privacy respected, even though her flat can function separately from the main residence.

She says buying into a retirement village was considered but wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t an option as it would have drained her financially. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We worked out this is the cheapest way to go really,â&#x20AC;? Patricia says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nice to be around family. I know that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re there if I ever need them and having my grandkids around also keeps me young.

What Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got is very manageable. I really didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to go without.â&#x20AC;?

Now in her 90s, my mother is testament to the fact that if we live long enough a number of downsizes will probably be on the cards.

After 10 years happily ensconced in her first retirement village, she seized the redevelopment of her complex as an opportunity to transfer to a one-bedroom villa in an equivalent village with good

proximity to family and local amenities.

Our own revived downsizing search ended recently and unexpectedly when we found a freehold, low maintenance, low-set home with a small garden within 10km of the city â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a rare find indeed.

It may not be our last move, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m content for now, relaxing on our back patio catching distant glimpses of the sand dunes on Stradbroke Island, a gin and tonic in hand, which is much better than a cleaning cloth.

I really enjoy reading Your Time magazine. I have only just realised that I can find it online so that I can read it when I’m not home. It also gives me the advantage of being able to increase the size and make it easier to read.

I particularly enjoyed reading the last edition article “Mirror Mirror”. I realised that I look about 10 years younger than what I feel. I’m approaching 88 years! I’m going to try and enrol in the yoga class.

Barrie Thurecht At 82 years young, Myra Timmerman (YT August) is amazingly fit, flexible and such an inspiring role model.

While youth is the currency of the culture, it is longevity which counts in the long run. With obesity a major health concern nationally, it is admirable to see how she stretches herself and achieves, demonstrating to those a lot younger, that a positive outlook on life, healthy living and exercise, can guarantee quality of life, long after our use-by date.

While future housing and financial independence into our twilight years is imperative, we forget that longevity is

like reaping what we have sown in our early years. What was once crucially important in our formative years – looks, steady employment and a reasonable social life – is a passing phase as we age.

What is of major concern when we are young fades like our looks and a new perspective on life and what’s important, evolves as we mature.

The internet is detrimental to many young, who see celebrity status as their ultimate goal in life. Cultural success for the gifted and talented, usually means much sacrifice and many hours of practice, which the internet rarely exposes.

The recent exposure of parents in the US paying thousands for their offspring to attend a social media camp where they learn how best to promote themselves on Facebook and the internet in general, is a frightening trend and superficial. The internet is not the real world.

Our relationships, values, health and social networks, built up over time, are our main concerns as we age. Taking responsibility for these personally, before we are confined and restricted by our ageing bodies, is our best counter-tactic.

We all pay the ferryman to get us to the other side.

Eloise Rowe I totally agree with comments made by Val Downes (YT, August) and would go on to say that the TV ads really make me cringe.

For example, Aldi’s advertisement says: “Good different” not “good but different” and then there is the AAMI insurance advertisement that’s not very “insuranc-ee”. What??

There are many other examples and one wonders why the younger generation are not only lacking in basic manners such as please, thank-you, excuse me etc, but also their grammar and inability to string a few words together to make a sentence.

It truly astounds me.

There is another example of a TV advert in which a family is seated at a table and one family member asks a parent to pass a condiment with no please and no thank-you, so this is an example of not only bad manners but also promotes bad manners generally.

What hope do we have when conversation is limited to the mobile phone and its strange language?

Traditional newspapers are experiencing shrinking readership, television is focused on entertainment, even when dressed up as “news”. Both these platforms are losing vital advertising revenue to Google and Facebook which made a net profit of $88 billion in 2016.

Sam Dastyari is presently holding a senate inquiry into “The future of Public Interest Journalism”. Fairfax, News Corp and the West Australian newspapers are laying off thousands of journalists – one wonders what the future holds.

Our youth openly state they do not want to pay for news content and look to Google and Facebook for world news.

Unless a solution is found, newspapers could be a thing of the past within two years.

I think we all need to join the conversation and express our thoughts as to where we stand on this important issue. To my mind, we need quality journalism keeping us all informed on the important happenings around the world today. I shudder to think what the consequences of getting our daily news from social media.

The media plays a vital role as watchdog to a functioning democracy.

Marching on for a little piece of peace At 64, social justice advocate Christine Henderson is still girding her loins for battle, organising, encouraging and marching for a more peaceful world where women have a voice, writes DOT WHITTINGTON.

Entering her teens as the hippy generation was promoting peace and love, Chris got the notion that peace could happen and with her own innate artistic bent, found it all flowed for her.

Like most of the young idealists of her day, life intervened and Chris found herself in education, teaching art and

English at high school. From there she moved into behaviour management, becoming a consultant to schools and working with communities challenged by failing socio-economics.

All of it was good fodder for what was to come. In 1992, she was talking to a colleague and idly asked what was happening on the weekend.

“I’m going to my women’s peace group meeting,” she replied.

Chris says it was one of life’s moments when the world stopped still: “I went along with her to the meeting. It was a small group, most of them older than me.

I figured I had to get more involved.”

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) started at the height of World War I in 1915 and was still going strong, punching well above its weight with Non-Government Organisation status in the UN and a presence in almost 40 countries.

Chris was hooked. She is well aware it is a long-haul, but says that every little bit can make a difference.

Chris is now retired, well at least from her job with the Education Department, but says she could never truly retire.

n January this year, women marched on Washington in protest at what they feared was the beginning of a racist regime. Brisbane women joined their day of global action. They marched in Brisbane again for a Ban the Bomb rally in June. Both times, Chris Henderson was in the thick of it, organising rallies and drawing people together at short notice to have their say and build connections.

She turned 64 last month, and remains as passionate about peace and empowerment as ever, recommending it to other women looking to become involved in their community.

While Chris has always felt strongly about social justice and peace – “it’s the women and children on the ground who really know what’s going on in a war and yet the men in the military make the decisions” – she was 40 before her thoughts became actions.

And she hasn’t looked back.

“I can remember being passionate about social justice from my early teens,” Chris says. “My parents had come out of World War II and had been affected by both world wars. They just wanted things to be better for their kids.”

She quit in 2011, when her husband, Keith, was diagnosed with leukaemia.

Happily, he is now in remission but she learnt a lot along the way.

She now works empowering women so they can step up to what’s possible. She set up her own coaching business working with groups and individuals, to help women take the first step and has a project Unstoppable Women.

She also facilitates Women Howling at the Moon, which meets on the night of the full moon each month to share and celebrate stories of empowerment. Some members are in their 70s and 80s.

Mind the bump It’s a glorious winter’s morning and KATE CALLAHAN is sitting solo in a café sipping her first-ever turmeric latte, when she unexpectedly learns that there’s a lot more to childbirth than she had ever imagined.

I

was persuaded to try this uber-trendy coffee-alternative, flavoured with black pepper, cayenne, ginger, cinnamon and turmeric (of course), when a young waiter, handsome as all get out, pitched the health benefits to me in a charming and upbeat manner.

I’ve always been a sucker for a good line.

“You see, ma’am, turmeric is really good for the immune system, yeah? It has this super potent antioxidant that’s anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial.

Great for arthritis and good for the gut, too.”

He pauses briefly to give me a dazzling smile that shows off a set of perfectly straight, white teeth.

“I’d definitely recommend almond milk.”

How could I say no? In for a penny, in for a pound and now I’m sipping this spicy brew, hoping it works some magic on my arthritic hands, which have been giving me curry since I pruned the orchard last week.

One of the more entertaining things about sitting solo in a café is the opportunity for people watching. People have been watching people since Adam was a boy. We all do it, consciously or not.

But when you’re over a certain age, you have the major advantage of being invisible so you can people-watch with gay abandon and no one takes one skerrick of notice of you.

I cup my hands around my turmeric latte and settle in to get to know a little bit about the people around me.

To my right, there’s a 30-something couple, talking animatedly about the imminent arrival of their baby. They are debating the music they want to play during the delivery – “the birthing playlist”, Dad calls it. I smile to myself and file that term away for future use.

Mum is keen on a compilation of old favourites (Pearl Jam, Cold Play, Norah Jones) to provide reassurance and help manage the pain. Dad says he’s found a playlist on line that’s “scientifically designed” to alleviate the anxiety of women in labour. He nods and pats Mum’s hand, encouragingly.

Must be their first baby, I muse, stopping myself just in time from leaning over and seeking confirmation.

I admire the collaboration and attention to detail that is taking place at the next table and can’t help but think it wasn’t like that in my day, when childbirth was a more pedestrian, less vaunted undertaking.

Their conversation turns to recording the momentous event and I learn that the same photographer they had for their

wedding is on stand-by for delivery and newborn photos. They’re not sure if they want still shots or videos, but in the end, decide to have a bob each way.

That topic done and dusted, they turn their attention to the “birthing app” they’ve both loaded on to their smart phones.

Birthing app? What the…? My silent query is answered when Dad states with confidence that “the app will help guide the process”.

At this point, I’m thinking Dad must work in project management. I’m not sure how helpful he’ll find a Gaant chart in managing the three stages of labour, but putting my cynicism to the side, I quickly google “birthing apps”.

To my amazement, I am confronted with a vast array of offerings, including a certain “contraction labour coach” which offers “extra support in the final phase of your pregnancy”.

With this app, “you will have a midwife by your side during the whole childbirth”. You’re kidding me, surely?

Hold that contraction for a mo’ while I check the app.

Judging from the magnitude of Mum’s baby bump, which Dad caresses and pats absent-mindedly, they’ll be using their app sooner rather than later.

Mum has dressed her bump in a figure-hugging, polka dot playsuit that screams to the world, “I’m proud to be pregnant”.

With long hair and legs to match, she is a vision of expectant loveliness.

You go, girl, I think to myself, but there’s only so much you can ask of that stretch fabric, I silently warn the young mum-to-be.

I made my own maternity dresses (no trousers or shorts, thank you very much) according to the fashion of the day – loose and voluminous. The whole point of maternity clothing in the 1970s, when I had my babies, was to be discreet and disguise the pregnancy. Nothing clingy or form-fitting.

The idea was to attract the eye away from the belly by trimming the neckline with lace or ric rac braid, for instance, or pintucking the yoke. Cowl necks and Peter Pan collars were popular too.

If you were game to wear them, few design features were more distracting than a set of leg-o-mutton sleeves, which were puffy and loose on the upper arm, tapering to a tight fit from elbow to wrist.

Back in the now, I drain my tepid turmeric latte and return the empty glass to its saucer. Time to get cracking.

I gather my bag and sun hat, pausing briefly at the table on my right, “Love your outfit. It suits you to a tee. Enjoy your day, folks.”

CALL TO POLIO SURVIVORS

Polio survivors are urged to sign up on the polio register, in an effort to gain government recognition and improved support services.

Successive federal and state governments have shown limited interest in commissioning research to quantify the number of polio survivors living in Australia today and to understand their service needs.

There are up to 400,000 polio survivors in Australia and their battle with the disease is not over.

On Saturday September 16, Sue MacKenzie, an Australian Polio Board Member, will host “Walk with Me” It’s a short stroll along the riverfront leaving New Farm Park ferry terminal at 10am, to raise awareness and fundraise for polio survivors. (Last year’s participants pictured above).

Poliomyelitis (polio) is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus. It invades the nervous system, and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours.

Until the 1950s, polio crippled thousands of children every year in industrialised countries.

Soon after the introduction of effective vaccines in the late 1950s (IPV) and early 1960s (OPV), polio was brought under control, and almost eliminated in industrialised countries.

Today, survivors are facing Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) with symptoms such as muscle weakness and severe fatigue.

WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE

Declining to use nouns properly You may decline to read on, writes DAVID PARMITER, because he is going to remind you about grammar, the way our language uses nouns, or naming words.

I

n case you have forgotten, or never even knew, every noun, or naming word, in our language has six cases.

Yes, six, depending on whether it is the subject, the object, or has some other function in the sentence.

For those of you who are ahead of me and are thinking: “C’mon we know all that stuff. Remember, Mr Boring in Year Six?” Yes, I know, but most children, now being squeezed out of our education toothpaste tube almost illiterate, have no idea. So it’s up to us grandparents to do what our indigenous elders do so well: pass on the tribal knowledge.

Take a common noun; any noun. ‘God’ will be our example.

The nominative case is the name itself so it becomes the subject of the verb. God is ... or will ... be/do/cause/possess something.

The accusative case is when God becomes the object of the verb. As in “I love God”. Subject-verb-object. The simplest construction in the English language. We learned that when we were eight.

But between those two is the vocative case. When you just call out “Oh, God!”

With the vocative case you are appealing to the object of your appeal. “O Lord, forgive them, for they know not what they do!” The vocative. Many of our uses of the vocative case involve swear words: “Oh, you b----!” or “you s---”, as my brother used to say as I handed him the soap for his mouth.

Our mother was good at the vocative.

“Children, come inside now. Time for tea.”

Then there’s the genitive which in Latin means the possessive.

Give unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s. Give unto God that which is God’s.

Life is about wanting and giving so it makes sense that we have a possessive case. Usually by adding ‘his’ or ‘her’ to the noun. The King, his crown. The Lady, her court.

In English, the possessive ‘his/hers’ became shortened to ‘s. The King his sword = the King’s sword. It indicates the missing letter. And the apostrophe has been a pain in the bum’s ever since (wrong). There is NO apostrophe in a plural. You simply add the ‘s’.

Over 50s. There is never an apostrophe in a plural. Only in a possessive, the

genitive case. Signwriters please note, when you are using your signwriter’s chalk or brush watch your plurals and possessives.

And as for “its” or “it’s”. Lord, spare me (vocative). There is just no apostrophe in the possessive “its”; and the apostrophe in “it’s” represents the missing letter ‘i’ in the contraction of “it is”. Blackboards, posters and even TV ads persist with misplaced apostrophes. Check your daily newspaper with a highlighter pen.

The fourth case is the dative. What does that mean? Well, dative means giving. So if I am giving you something, I must use the dative case. “Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s”.

There you get two cases, “Caesari “ and “Caesaris”, in the same sentence. Two for the price of one.

Finally, there’s the ablative. The punitive blow on every schoolboy’s desire to go out and play.

What the @#$*% is this all about?

Well, for some reason the Romans felt it necessary that every noun should be saddled with yet another grammatical case. It serves no purpose.

Aged 11, we were exhorted by our magister et imperator, old Baggypants

Boring, to parrot: ‘from, by, which, or whence “. The ablative.

Thus: the ablative absolute ... “the battle being won, Caesar rested his troops.” The dictionary defines the ablative as being the sign of removal or completion. The ablative case indicates “the place from which, the time when, the place in which and the manner or means by which ...”.

“Oh, Lord, save us...” (vocative) but we all passed Latin and some went on to University ... and learned to conform, especially in jobs in government, law and the public service.

Anyone studying one of the sciences would now appreciate having a basic grasp of declining nouns and conjugating verbs in Latin and also how to construct sentences correctly in modern English.

So there you have it: six cases.

Nominative, vocative, accusative, genitive, dative and ablative. Ablasolutely.

And what this does for students today is prepare them for the law, medicine and other branches of science, because it gives them the ability to understand the derivations and meanings of about half of their new vocabulary. I rest my cases.

Men aged 55+ are taking to the kitchen, representing a significant proportion of students at cooking school.

And this isn’t about boiling an egg or meat and three veg either – it’s coulibiac of salmon, duck confit and black beluga lentils with chorizo and aioli that’s getting them in.

Resident chef and owner of the Golden Pig cooking school in Newstead, Katrina Ryan, says retired older men with time on their hands are enjoying the chance to cook up a feast and eat it in good company.

“One man, in his early 60s, has been to every class,” she says. “He leaves his wife at home and comes by himself and finds the class is his time out. It’s his social time.”

POP ON THE KETTLE TO PREVENT DISEASE Admittedly, it is all the fun part – menu decisions are made and the ingredients ready for them – although the classes will have the man of the family well equipped to do the cooking and impress friends at the next dinner party.

Bread and sour dough making is popular and so is the French Bistro style souffles and classic sauces, as well as Asian.

Nevertheless, but not surprisingly, one of the more popular classes among the men is Beer, Beef and Butchery, a hands-on four-hour session of butchery, cooking and beer tasting.

As well as learning the tips and tricks of the chef’s trade (there really is a right way to dice an onion) there are more meaty lessons such as seeing a whole pig cut up ready for the various parts to be boiled, poached, crispy friend, stuffed and roasted.

But while there’s plenty to learn about preparation and presentation, there’s also the social aspect of later eating the fruits of the labour with a glass of wine while students to chat about their achievements.

“It’s hands-on not just a cooking demonstration,” Katrina says.

And naturally, there is a choice of menus so that anyone can become the next master chef.

There is now even more reason to enjoy a cup of tea, with a new review of existing research showing the humble cuppa can help prevent a number of diseases.

Researchers from Edith Cowan University’s School of Medical and Health Sciences examined more than 100 studies from around the world that have looked at tea consumption.

They found that black, white and green tea can reduce the risk factors associated with Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes.

The findings could offer some hope to the more than 65 million people expected to be living with Alzheimer’s disease by 2030 and help reduce the 5.1 million deaths worldwide from diabetes.

“There is strong evidence that tea consumption can lower the levels of beta amyloid b in the brain, the build-up of which can cause Alzheimer’s disease,” she said. The researchers also examined evidence that tea consumption could be protective against diabetes.

Both population-based studies as well as human clinical trials also found a link between tea consumption and a reduced risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

Dr Fernando said that overall, tea appeared to offer a safe and acceptable approach toward lowering the risk factors associated with diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

PUSH TO BLOCK ‘JUNK’ HEALTH INSURANCE TAX BREAKS Consumer group Choice is asking the Federal Government to stop providing tax breaks and rebates for ‘junk’ health insurance policies, saying they offer little value to consumers or the community.

The call is part of a major submission to the Senate Inquiry into the value and affordability of private health insurance and out-of-pocket medical costs.

Choice defines junk policies as those that either exclude treatment for almost

all illnesses, including heart attack, stroke and cancer, or that only allow the policy holder to be treated as a private patient in a public hospital.

The junk products account for about 13 per cent of all hospital and combined policies on the market.

With more than 40,000 products on the market, many people find it difficult to cut through confusion that is private health insurance and get the best deal.

The weather was perfect and people started arriving early so that they could view our well-appointed display homes and take in all the Pavilion Recreational and Wellness centre has to offer; including indoor/outdoor swimming pool, spa, sauna, luxury cinema, ten pin-bowling alley, library, billiard room, craft room, and much more!

We were lucky enough to have the Milon (state of the art gymnasium) team and our personal trainer Jay, on hand to demonstrate to our visitors how the Milon system works and answer many questions about the benefits of low impact training. Our stunning display homes also proved to

be very popular with the over 300 people who attended. We were also delighted to see the community spirit building with our residents with many of them volunteering their time to man the tea/coffee station, show people around the Pavilion, be on hand to assist in the display homes and answer the many questions our visitors had about the benefits of Resort Lifestyle living.

After a lovely lunch, it was time for everyone to put on their dancing shoes and boogie to the sensational UK Bee Geez Tribute Band Concert. It was fantastic to see so many people up dancing and singing along to all the Bee Gees’ famous songs. The lucky draw prizes were drawn at intermission with one of our residents winning first prize, much to the delight of everyone.

There’s nothing quite like a Good Book For millennia the words of Psalm 121, “I lift up my eyes to the hills, whence comes my help”, have been of comfort and encouragement to the lost and lonely, writes DIANA HACKER.

M

ariners, explorers, lonely shepherds and those far from home have been lifted up by their faith and thoughts of loved ones far away. Often, a slim copy of the Bible was all the reading material that circumstances allowed. Slipped into a pocket, haversack or saddle bag, this volume contained the familiar stories, words of wisdom and promise.

There are many famous editions of the Good Book. In some families, a huge tome has been passed down through the generations and become an invaluable family archive with generations of entries of birth, marriage and death.

Other volumes are unique for their illustrations, calligraphy and ownership. The archive of the Queensland Women’s Historical Association holds some special volumes. One is a “self-explanatory” edition, while another is totally written in Pitman’ shorthand.

Sir Isaac Pitman (1813-1897) invented in 1837, the system of symbols, representing sounds of the English language, of a series of straight lines and curves which enabled the person to record speech at a fast rate.

This skill was highly regarded in the world of the private secretary before the invention of the dictaphone.

Another artefact is a Bible in two volumes, once the property of Queensland’s first Governor Sir George Ferguson Bowen, who

recorded the names and birth dates of his two sons and four daughters.

Another was the property of Patrick Leslie the first pioneer settler on the Darling Downs.

Patrick was given the Bible by his father, William Leslie of Warthill of Scotland, when Patrick left his home for the colonies. Patrick kept this on his person throughout all his travels and adventures, no doubt resorting to it when faced with fire, flood, drought and danger.

Since the invention of the printing press by the German goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg in about 1440, which made written history and information available to the ordinary citizen, books and libraries have been the pleasure and haunt of those thirsting for knowledge.

To the bookworm, nothing can match the feel or smell of a book. On Sunday, September 24, the QWHA has a book sale 10am-3pm at Miegunyah. Titles will be of mix of fact and fiction.

All stock will be priced to sell and all funds will benefit the running and upkeep of the house museum.

It is a credit to members past and present and friends that they have purchased, restored and maintained the house and its collection from membership fees and fundraising for the more than 60 years without any permanent or ongoing support.

Queensland citizens can be proud that the state’s history has

been so carefully collected, preserved and conserved for the future. Everyone is invited to call in during the day and browse.

There will be plenty of parking in Jordan Tce, Bowen Hills and it’s hard to miss the elegant Victorian Queenslander which is the home of the association.

Old favourite does its Civic duty The Civic has long been a mainstay of the Honda stable, an often cheeky and always conscientious small car with widespread appeal, writes BRUCE McMAHON.

T

here has been – as with all makes and models – some ups and downs but in 2017, the Honda Civic is pretty much on the money if a bit bigger and plusher than the original which arrived back in 1972 as a smallish two or three-door car.

This time around there’s a sedan and hatchback version with four or five doors, both carrying a 21st century style that’s hard to miss in the carpark.

Reminds us of a young Swedish visitor’s description of a platypus as a “beaver duck”, a strange-looking animal of different parts.

And while the Civic hatchback is a bold-looking car, the extra effort to make it stand out leaves rear vision compromised; it’s one of those cars where a rear-view camera makes a lot of sense.

Speaking of cameras, the Civic has another neat trick with a camera in the left-hand side mirror to show, on the centre screen, what’s alongside when the left-hand indicator is used.

The Honda’s angled and body-creased style is carried through to the cabin, a bit too much Thunderbirds Are Go perhaps for some tastes yet this is a quite comfortable and ergonomically-sound

interior. The only issue here is tyre noise creeping in on country roads.

And, to get rid of the gripes, the Civic runs a Constantly Variable Transmission.

Now for the most part, and for many drivers, this will not be an issue.

The Honda driveline is smart enough around town and happy at 60-70km/h speed limits.

The trouble for some will be that stretching drone as revs rise and it sounds like a badly slipping clutch.

Then there’s that sluggish feel, as momentary as it may be, when a driver asks the Civic to overtake and jump say from 90km/h to 110km/h; next thing you know it’s all connected up and you’re over the speed limit, especially with the 1.5 litre turbocharged engine in the VTi-L. Yet for all this – the out-there style, tyre noise and CVT – the Honda Civic is a tidy city and country car.

It’s happy to tour good roads and bad,

freeways and back roads with comfort and composure.

Indeed, alongside its cabin practicality and decent-sized boot, that’s the frontdrive Civic hatchback’s best attributes – road composure from well-sorted handling and road-holding characteristics.

The steering feel may not be as sweet as some in this class but the Honda sits flat and untroubled through sporting turns and rarely, even on damp roads, does the car feel as if it’s losing its grip.

It can be a fun and confident car to hustle along a country road; again, pity about that transmission when there’s an eager 127kW developed by the 1.5 litre engine in the VTi-L hatch, although the paddle shifters here can help find a better “step” in the CVT for a more sporting approach.

The Honda Civic VTi-L hatchback sits at a reasonable $27,790 in the midst of a very competitive segment – think Mazda 3, Hyundai i30, Toyota Corolla and such.

It is a good car, now with Honda’s five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty, and well deserves to be on today’s shopping list, even if it is not the leader in its class.

COTA Queensland is urging the State Government to immediately broaden the focus of its Advancing Queensland: an age-friendly community program and investigate the eight domains in unison rather than in isolation.

“We need to act now if we are going to be ready to respond appropriately and sufficiently to the ever-increasing number of ageing Queenslanders in the coming years,” Mr Tucker-Evans said.

“They have so much to offer in terms of experience, wisdom and time but need to be enabled to fully participate and be part of society.”

A one-off payment of up to $75 is being made to 2.5 million Age and 770,000 Disability Support pensioners, and 235,000 veterans on the Service pension.

The one-off payment of $75 for singles and $62.50 for each pensioner in a couple will be paid automatically.

The payments recognise that many welfare recipients have a limited ability to earn additional income to help them meet living costs.

Minister for Social Services, Christian Porter, said the same Bill also reinstated the Pensioner Concession Card to about 90,000 former part-pension recipients, who lost access to the card in January.

Downsizing is a big decision to make, emotionally and economically. BRIAN MOONEY explains the financial implications and what needs to be considered before packing up the family home.

he kids are gone … finally and suddenly, you have to clean a monstrosity of a house which probably doesn’t tie in with your idea of retirement being fun and a time to relax.

It probably amounts to one less day of bowls, bridge or golf and may be a noose around the neck if you want to travel frequently.

Downsizing is a decision-making process that comes up regularly with my clients. The important thing is to make sure all issues are dealt with before transactions occur.

So if you’re downsizing your house, here’s a checklist of the top five things you need to consider: 1. Tax – there might be Capital Gains Tax payable if you have rented out your home for a period or run a business from home, but usually there is no tax payable. If there is tax payable this means you will have less to spend on a new residence.

Make sure your Accountant provides advice on this before proceeding.

2. Transaction costs – has it been a while since you sold a house? Check the costs first as you may be surprised. Again, this

means less money for new residence and/ or investment. We can estimate these for you.

3. Superannuation – the federal government has proposed changes that will greatly benefit those over age 65 who are considering downsizing their home. If legislated, from July 1, 2018, those over 65 who sell their residence (whether or not they are buying another residence) can make a Downsizer contribution to superannuation (technical speak is non-concessional contribution) of up to $300,000 a person, or $600,000 for a couple. You must have owned the home for 10 years. For some, this will be a great new opportunity.

4. Centrelink – downsizing will most likely have an impact on your Age or Service pension. One of the implications is that Centrelink and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) will not assess the proceeds of the sale as an asset under the Assets Test for 12 months, assuming you are intending to buy again. The proceeds will be assessed under the Income Test.

YOUR WILL There are many personal affairs to be tied up when you die – apply for a death certificate, organise a funeral, call in assets, identify and pay liabilities, and see that the estate is distributed to beneficiaries.

This process is known as estate administration. It is essential that you leave a valid Will and that you put careful thought and consideration into who will act as your executor to ensure your wishes are carried out. If there is a dispute over your estate, then the executor will act as the middle man to resolve the dispute.

Depending on the size of your estate, the executor may need special skills, such as business or investment experience to properly manage your assets.

Generally, a spouse is the first named executor, but there is no rule or requirement for that to be the case.

You may choose to appoint a professional person to act as your executor, but you need to be aware that a professional may wish to charge your estate their usual fees for work undertaken as your executor.

It is recommended that you appoint at least one alternative executor in case your first named executor predeceases you or is unable to act for any reason. You can appoint up to four executors at one time, however all must be over 18 years of age.

Look after mind as well as body Psychological distress isn’t a normal part of ageing, writes LIZ BAMFORD.

W

e are all ageing, let’s face it. It’s a beautiful human reality and try as we might to reverse the process, not even the most esteemed scientist has the cure.

As we age, and particularly beyond 65 years, we accept a new normal, where health conditions are part of daily life and things start to slow down.

Although, this is inevitable, many older adults may also accept that a feeling of psychological distress is a normal part of the ageing process.

Research findings suggest that as we age, feelings of psychological distress may increase and for some, this may be a symptom of depression or anxiety.

Sometimes this emotional distress is triggered by a life event, such as a change in accommodation, death of a partner, or adjusting to a new or worsening health condition. Despite the ageing population and rising levels of psychological distress, more young people seek psychological help than the older section.

During the past decade, mental health campaigns and industry-based initiatives have helped enormously to reduce stigma associated with mental health issues.

That said, the social perception of mental health issues being common, is

relatively new and for the older generation it may feel counterintuitive to ask for help when feeling sad, lonely and “not quite right”.

Feelings of powerlessness among the ageing population is common, particularly when experiencing physical changes and this can transcend into emotional and psychological difficulties.

Although these feelings are common, this does not mean they are to be expected and should be ignored.

It is just as important for older adults to talk about their feelings and emotional experiences, as it is to present physical complaints to the doctor.

Like the physical complaints, if left untreated they may worsen. Talking to a psychologist can help understand what might be happening when feelings of sadness, worry or frustration are overwhelming. A psychologist can also devise strategies for dealing with new realities of life and manage feelings of sadness, worry, grief or loss.

SURVIVORS TAKE HEART FROM SUPPORT PROGRAM THE Heart Foundation has launched a new integrated program to improve support for heart attack survivors and reduce the risk of repeat heart attacks.

The brochure My Heart My Life and website provide information and support to patients about their condition, the importance of cardiac rehabilitation, psychosocial health, medications and clinical and lifestyle risk factor management. It includes interactive actions plans and case studies.

An “email journey” reinforces key information and guides heart attack patients through steps as they progress on their recovery.

The Heart Foundation Helpline, which has responded to more than 600,000 calls and emails from Australians with heart health questions since it began in 1998, provides free personalised information and support on heart health, nutrition and lifestyle.

Results from the Heart Foundation’s annual Heart Attack Survivors’ Survey reveal that less than one in three patients understand their condition, one in three stops taking medications as directed, and less than one in four will attend cardiac rehabilitation.

About face at the reunion As we age, whether gracefully or disgracefully, there is a magnetic attraction to the way things used to be, writes DUNCAN COLE

N

ostalgia is usually coloured by “selective positive recall” as we erase memories of all those things and people we disliked way back when. It makes it all seem as if today is a continuation of the successful journey.

This may be true in our own minds, but it is mostly an illusion. One of the grand levellers is the reunion.

My recall of the few that I had previously attended placed them somewhere between root canal therapy and an enema. If they were jerks back then, they were probably still jerks. If you got on well with them, there would be no problems and communication would be easy.

I had a wonderful experience recently. It was the 50th anniversary of the date when 123 of us young lads joined the Navy.

We commenced our apprenticeship at HMAS Nirimba in the western suburbs of Sydney at Quakers Hill. We were ascribed the acronym MOBI – Most Objectionable Bastard Imaginable.

It was quite a remote outpost to most of us, being gathered from every part of Australia. And from every part of Australia we descended upon a caravan

Maybe age had mellowed us, or the aberrant natures, harboured for so long as memories, were not all that annoying or aberrant after all.

It was such a pleasant experience meeting a lot of people I had not seen for so long. I discovered that five of our group had spent their lives with the teenage sweethearts they had met at our depot dances.

My brother and I play in the band The Mobiles, and we played Beatles, Rolling Stones, Animals, Gerry and the Pacemakers – the list goes on – until the lights were dimmed.

Then it was into some Shadows instrumentals and soft ballads, to the snogging on the dance floor, and more outside.I felt a special closeness to those people on the last night of the five-day reunion.

I had taken my relatively new 12-string guitar just in case I was requested to play, but the night flew past so quickly. I promised to take it to the next one. The final day’s breakfast revealed us all in our natural glory, as if time had not passed.

A few days after returning home I received a message from a fellow Weapons Electronics man, one of the attendees.

He was not someone I knew well during my Navy days but he had read some of my scribblings, and he had an idea. His project was to record the “true” history of HMAS Nirimba – no frills. All he needed was a capable writer.

There is not a definitive history of the MOBI breeding ground in existence, so it appealed to me. We are now working together on that project from opposite sides of the country.

Cupboards piled with paraphernalia keepsakes photos craft and sewing gear that could come in handy… one day.

Should I use it up, wear it out, make it do or scrap it now, throw it out, buy it new; must I sort through all my memories pack them up for charities and toss them in the bin.

Can I bundle up my life and cart it to the dump?

A TASTE OF MELANESIA COMES TO CLEVELAND

WANTOK Musik , a night of Melanesian music and dance comes to the Redland Performing Arts Centre (RPAC) on Sunday, September 17, the weekend of Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) Independence.

The showcase celebration is a partnership in community cultural development with the Quandamooka Festival and is an exciting opportunity to experience a gathering of Quandamooka and Melanesian communities, artists and musicians.

The evening will feature contemporary and traditional Melanesian musicians and will be headlined by George Telek, a PNG musical icon and international artist, who will bring his signature blend of

contemporary and traditional Melanesian rhythms to the RPAC stage. His 1997 album Telek, won an Aria for best world music.

Also on the program is panpiper Charles Maimarosia from aremote village in the Solomon Islands, Tio from Vanuatu with his vocals, ukulele, guitar and violin skills, and Ben Hakalitz from PNG who has 30 years of musical experience and technique on the drums.

They will be joined by musicians and artists from Quandamooka Country, as well as other musicians from PNG and West Papua, for an amazing night of indigenous music, dance and culture.

To complete a night of Melanesian indulgence, sample the food in the RPAC Piazza, and browse the art and craft on display in the concert hall foyer, which will be on show for the month of September.

The main performance in the Concert Hall starts at 6.30pm.

NEW Farm Nash Theatre promises pure entertainment in its presentation of the French classic La Cage Aux Folles.

La Cage Aux Folles, a nightclub owned by Georges, features a drag show starring his partner Albin. After 20 years of unwedded bliss

Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better-or-worse get a bit of both when Georges’ son announces his impending marriage.

Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade as “normal” when he meets the family of the bride-to-be but Albin has other plans.

Based on Jean Poiret’s hilarious French play of the same name, the multi-Tony award-winning musical, La Cage Aux Folles is filled with singing, dancing, laughter and fun.

It is directed by Leo Bradley with musical director Mary Greathead and choreographer Shai Lewis.

THE Queensland Family History Society presents a seminar focusing on 19th century English research using parish records, workhouses, and quarter sessions.

Parish records give the details of life within the parish, including baptism, marriage, and burial registers as well as vestry minutes, payments, and disbursements to the poor, parish apprentices, bastardry examinations and bonds and maintenance orders.

The establishment of Poor Law Unions and a workhouse within each were major components of the New Poor Law instituted in 1834. This law ended outdoor relief and the workhouse was meant as a place of last resort for parish aid.

As a result, it was a feared

and dreaded place for our ancestors.

There are genealogical treasures in Quarter Session records. Since 1388, quarter sessions were held usually four times a year in English and Welsh county and other courts.

They heard criminal cases but also granted licences for a variety of occupations, heard Poor Law cases, settlement disputes, granted certificates of dissenters’ meeting-houses, and generally kept the peace.

GOLDEN OLDIES AT NEW UKE FEST

THE inaugural Bulimba Uke Fest (BUF) brings a packed program of music with a tropical Hawaiian theme on Sunday, October 22.

Festival organiser, Sandra Beynon said it was an amazing testament to the power of older musicians that they were headlining the festival in their various guises.

Mama Juju and the Jam Tarts is made up of four women over 50 while Aloha Baby Band is three men from Murwillumbah also over 50.

“Brisbane Ukelele Musicians Club (BUMS) is largely made up of over 50s,” says Sandra, whose alter-ego is Willie Nelson’s Love Child.

The festival starts at 11am and continues until about 9pm, with a “jam session” for all players.

Guitar Brothers Red Hill are sponsoring two ukuleles as prizes for the One Minute Uke Shred, with entries now open online and final judging on festival day.

“The focus is squarely on community participation and engagement and festival tickets are priced very low to ensure as many people can afford to get involved in BUF,” Ms Beynon said.

Local realtor, Shannon Harvey of Place Bulimba, is supporting BUF with a donation of $1000 towards paying performer overheads on the day.

“I love this community which has given me so much, and I am very proud to be helping get this fledgling festival some wings so we can grow it into an annual occasion on the community calendar of events,” she said.

This festival is another example of how over 50s are involved in creating fresh new events in the community, remaining vital and finding ways to engage at all levels in society.

“Just because we are over 50, doesn’t mean we have to retire from music,” said Ms Beynon.

“We are discovering new ways to stay in the game, and we love what we do, so I encourage all older musos to dust off their instruments, get together with likeminded people and get out amongst it.

The Bulimba Uke Festival will be held on Sunday, October 22, at Bulimba Golf Club.

The reader travels with them through inhospitable territory to North Alaska.

It would seem at times to be an incredulous journey, but it is shown, through their persistence, determination and love for each other, that anything is achievable. I enjoyed this story and highly recommend it.

I struggled to finish this book. The plot was too far-fetched to be plausible. It took more than 150 pages to get the story going. The main characters were too good and too brave to be true. I liked the descriptions of the ice, snow, freezing cold and darkness of the Arctic winter. The concept of a deaf 10-year-old child relating the story and her view of the world was a good idea. I also liked the anti-oil and gas fracking theme. This book might please some but was not for me. 4/10

BOOK review JOHN KLEINSCHMIDT There are many reasons why I thoroughly enjoyed this book despite several moments that bring into question the plausibility of the storyline. The Silence is drawn from Ruby, a smart and tenacious 10-year-old who, deaf from birth, communicates her thoughts and feelings strongly through signing and the clever use of technology. The vividly descriptive skills of the author compelled me to feel the silence of a piercingly cold and continuously dark midwinter Alaska. Mother Yasmin, is brave and resourceful, relentlessly moving the story towards an unlikely reunion with husband Matt, who delivers a warning about the environmental consequences of the unrelenting quest for oil.

“Fists beating once on your chest then going up in the air – sign language for ‘hoorah!’.” This book was a real page turner from start to finish, easy reading and with a few twist and turns along the way. Although the story at times was rather far-fetched, I enjoyed reading it and was in a hurry to find out the truth. Had Yasmin’s husband really had an affair? Did he die in the fire? Ruby always believed they would find her father, but would they? Ruby’s intuition and her wisdom beyond her years and the way she handled herself was beautifully portrayed. I enjoyed this book.

Matt is filming wildlife in Alaska and on November 24, his wife Yasmin and their 10-year-old daughter Ruby, who is deaf, arrive from London to spend Christmas with him. They are told he has died in a freak fire and his wedding ring and phone were discovered among the debris.

Yasmin is convinced he is alive and within hours she and Ruby are driving alone, across a frozen wilderness where nothing grows, nobody lives and where it will be permanently dark as the night will last for another 54 days.

And someone is watching them.

MARY BARBER It’s hard to pigeon-hole this novel. It’s a thriller based around a mother and her deaf daughter as they search northern Alaska for their missing husband and father, in the bleak November weather.

I particularly enjoyed Ruby’s first person insights into the rich deaf world.

She is about to start middle school and her mum is pushing her to stay at the mainstream school. She wants to go to the deaf school where she will just be Ruby, rather than the “deaf kid”.

The book is repetitive in parts and could be 50 pages shorter but it’s an interesting storyline. Also British author Lupton has described the cold, isolation and menace of the Alaskan winter so well it gets into your bones. Rug up for the ride.

This is a love story with a difference. For someone who enjoys watching programs featuring tough truckers dealing with blizzards and black ice on the North American roads, I found it unbelievable that a slight woman who had never driven a truck before could achieve a journey where other truckers gave up due to the weather forecasts.

The story grew on me due to Google checks. The towns and roads do exist with accompanying pictures and the delineators are sufficiently high to be visible.

And Yasmin was no ordinary woman, a physicist with capabilities to understand what appeared to be random numbers and plot locations. Very impressive!

For me the hero of the story was 10-year old-Ruby. The world of deafness revealed through her coping mechanisms and intelligence was insightful and moving. I found myself visualising little Ruby far more than the other characters.

On the whole I enjoyed this novel.

Tight-knit community rallies for charity

C

aboolture’s Halcyon Glades community is going above and beyond to support local charities in

need.

It began when residents in the over 50s community decided to lend a helping hand to local charities by donating clothes and materials, making toys for young children, knitting chemo bags for patients and creating comfort items for local nursing homes and hospitals.

More recently, residents rallied and donated almost 30 boxes of pre-loved goods plus a mattress, three doonas and five rugs to The Caboolture Action Group.

The Caboolture Action Group is a non-government funded, not-for-profit, volunteer-operated registered charity.

The organisation relies on donations from the public to aid the homeless and disadvantaged in Caboolture and the surrounding areas.

The Art and Craft Group at Halcyon Glades put the collective skills of its members together to make eight single blankets, 48 scarves and eight beanies, as well as an assortment of wristbands and socks.

In total the Halcyon community banded together and donated four boxes of linen, seven boxes of clothes, one box of toiletries, two boxes of odd and ends, one box of baby clothes, two boxes of baby toys and one box of shoes.

“After researching local charities, Halcyon’s Arts and Crafts Group decided to hold a charity drive within the community to help raise some muchneeded goods – an initiative that proved to be quite successful,” she said.

Community members have also banded together to knit chemo bags for patients in hospitals, alongside the Quilters Group which makes comfort items for local nursing homes.

Halcyon Glades also has home owners who come together in the community work shed to construct cradles, trucks, play phones and numerous other toys to donate to children in need.

Discover Norway under the midnight sun A cruise along the lacy coastline of Norway is not all lolling about on the deck as ANGELA BENSTED hikes, kayaks and cycles the fields and fjords.

A lookout is cantilevered over the sheer drop below for stunning mountain and valley views.

“I

’m a cruise ship virgin,” I whisper to the tall man behind the bar, as I struggle to understand the cardswipe and signature process.

“Well there’s no better way to pop your cherry,” he replies, passing me a glass of pink champagne as the ship sounds two blasts from its horn and slips away from the dock.

On a whim I’ve picked Norway for a holiday, its lacework coastline making it feel less like a country than the crumbling edge of a continent, as if someone smashed along the edge of Sweden with a hammer and the fallen rubble has taken root and declared its independence.

Many cruises include pit stops at Norway’s fjords but I’ve chosen Hurtigruten, literally “fast way” in Norwegian, a local shipping line established in 1893 to ferry passengers and goods between remote coastal communities. With an increasing reliance on tourism for its economic viability, Hurtigruten has woven daily excursions into its cargo route, changing with the season.

There are 540 passengers aboard the MS Midnatsol, the aptly named ship I’m calling home for the next six nights.

It’s June so we won’t see the northern lights on our trip – they only dance across the sky in the autumn and springtime.

But we will cross into the Arctic Circle for the summer solstice, the longest day of the year when the sun doesn’t set, but dips to kiss the horizon before climbing again. The north-bound journey starts in Bergen, Norway’s original capital and second largest city.

Bryggen, and narrow houses with steeply pitched roofs are stacked neatly behind them, playing leapfrog up the hills towering over the water on either side.

A funicular hauls people above the city for a view from Mount Fløyen, but before embarking I prefer to walk off the morning’s waffles by joining the locals, hiking the zig-zag roadways up the same hillside for a breathtaking experience.

Thanks to the hike and my pink champagne I sleep well on my first night at sea and wake ready to explore.

On day one the Midnatsol enters the World Heritage listed Geiranger Fjord, sailing slowly through mint-green waters, past sheer cliff faces dotted with farmhouses and striped with waterfalls.

Many passengers disembark at Geiranger. As the ship does a U-turn to continue its journey north, we board a coach to run a parallel course overland, starting with a steep ascent through nine hairpin bends called Eagle Road.

Our driver Raphael is from Poland but has an Australian wit. I remark upon his impressive driving, after he takes us along skinny roads, squeezing past campervans and other coaches to reach a lookout high over the Geiranger Fjord.

He shrugs and says this road isn’t the worst of it, then leans in closer and says “Anyway. I am drunk.”

From here we travel through dewy farmland producing berries, pears and apples. Roadside verges look like neglected English gardens, carpeted with lupins, flower spikes like foxgloves, heavy with pink and purple blooms.

These plants, introduced by wellmeaning bureaucrats to beautify an already breathtaking country, now threaten native vegetation and are considered pests.

The bus climbs higher, over stone bridges and churning streams. We reach bracken-covered plateaux with pockets of snow by the road, and crane to see the peaks of the adjacent cliffs, shrouded in heavy mist. Our guide calls this weather “trollish”, perhaps inspired by the location, Trollstigen (“troll way”).

At the highest point there’s a lookout, cantilevered over the sheer drop below, giving photographers the chance to snap mountain and valley views. For the more adventurous there are rickety stone stairs and a narrow track ascending higher.

Of course, what comes up must come down, and after enjoying the view and shopping for souvenirs, we hold our breath and, in my case, close our eyes, as Raphael manoeuvres our coach down 11 hairpin bends to the valley below.

He pauses for us to take photos at the waterfall and jokes about the brakes failing; reassuring us only a few coaches ever get stuck, before delivering us to a restaurant for coffee and snacks.

By now I’m ready for a stiff gin but instead I feast on bread with cheese and reindeer sausage and pancakes filled with sweet cream. From here we continue north to meet the ship at its next port of call in Molde. Rivers and streams, watery capillaries making their way to the fjords and then out to sea, weave like ribbons across the landscape.

Strips of emerald green are wedged between waterways and hillsides, scattered with white houses and red barns and boatsheds. We reach the port at around 9pm and dine at a local hotel; a piece of fat, firm cod served on creamy mashed potato, sprinkled with sautéed cabbage and crispy bacon pieces.

This adventure sets the tone for the rest of the cruise. At one stop I join a cycling tour, at another I take to the water in a kayak. One morning, in the middle of a wide fjord, a small charter boat sidles up to the Midnatsol to welcome on board a few dozen passengers and whisk them away to Svartisen, Norway’s secondlargest glacier. After a short journey through Holandsfjord followed by a gentle hike, we sit by the edge of the

It’s a gentle hike to Svartisen Glacier. glacier’s lake, sobered by the news the ice slick has receded 15m in 17 years.

Some visitors drink coffee and eat slices of lefse, a traditional Scandinavian flatbread. Others raise a toast to nature’s majesty with Moscato served over 2000-year-old ice. The sun shines on our first day north of the Arctic Circle and the passengers, mostly Norwegians and Germans with a few French, some Americans and a couple of Australians, are in a party mood.

Just before midnight the captain steers the vessel into a narrow gorge, Trollfjord, a space so narrow we feel we can reach out and touch the sheer cliffs on either side. The ship slows to a crawl and the skilled crew take her round in a circle, spinning on her own axis.

Passengers put down their drinks and drift outside, standing as still as the night air, soaking up the midnight sun glinting off snowy peaks. A family picnics on the distant shore. Once we curve around the top of Norway, leaving the sheltered fjords for the Barents Sea, the weather turns bleak. Howling wind and needling rain forces passengers inside to play cards over hot chocolate or beer. I’m tempted to cancel my shore excursions but soldier on and my tenacity is rewarded.

In Honingsvag, I join a dozen or so people for a bird safari. We travel by coach past fish drying racks, timber frames as big as houses strung with nets and shrivelled cod, and the world’s northernmost petrol station. “They don’t even bother advertising their prices,” our guide says. She tells us the locals have two seasonal wardrobes, both woollen.

“The only difference is the colour.”

We pass through snow-pocked tundra, nibbled at by reindeer and silver foxes, to board a small fishing boat.

Eventually the fishing boat slows and circles. Binoculars and zoom lenses work overtime as we shuffle in our weatherproof jumpsuits from portside to starboard, squealing like children.

On day seven we leave the cruise at Kirkenes, the final port on the northbound journey before the ship returns to Bergen, and fly two hours to Oslo for the connection home.

ou could be just a few days drive from Innamincka (about 1000km north of Adelaide); on your way to Birdsville or the Strzelecki Track; or heading to The Dig Tree following in the steps of Burke and Wills – but just around the corner there’s a place that’s very special.

Burke’s Memorial, Wills Memorial and King’s site of rescue are all found in the Innamincka Regional Reserve while the Dig Tree is a short 40km drive into Queensland; but that is another story.

Coongie Lakes is today’s destination and the effort is worthwhile. It is about 100km north-est of Innamincka in the north-eastern corner of South Australia.

The land is a mix of crown, pastoral lease and protected area.

The region permits conservation, grazing, petroleum exploration and mining and managed recreation to operate side by side, making it the first reserve of its type.

It is the traditional lands of the Yandruwandha, Yawarrawarrka, Ngamini and Dieri people and a spiritual place for Aboriginal people who lived in this region for thousands of years and still retain a strong link and presence.

The two-hour drive from Innamincka makes Coongie Lakes easily accessible for the day or a place to stay a while.

The road/track crosses small dunes and along floodplains and eventually along Cooper Creek. This area can experience flooding, so road conditions are changing and it’s worth checking to see it is open.

We were among the first in after it had been closed for 18 months.

You may experience ruts, corrugation and most certainly soft sand, so a 4WD is recommended.

We were travelling with a roof top tent and found the going easy. Offroad camper trailers could navigate the access but caravan owners chose to park up their vans in the town common ($5 a day) and take the tent for an overnight stay.

There is a day entry fee and if staying, camping fees per night. Be sure to take plenty of water as it is an isolated area.

Permits can be purchased at the

general store in Innamincka and it is a small price to camp in paradise.

There are various camping choices in the Reserve and National Park. About 20km short of the lakes are three designated camp sites on the Cooper with no facilities. The next sites are at the end of the track where camping spots have plenty of shade and clean drop dunnies.

You can walk or drive from here on a short, easy trail over a dune to the Lake Coongie, which can’t be seen until the end of the track – and then the view is jaw-dropping.

The last camping sites, no facilities, are 1km back along the same track from the turnoff to the dunes. There are many beautiful sites around the lake’s edge.

Motorboats, camp fires, fishing and generators are not permitted in the park but you can canoe or kayak on the lake.

The lake’s edge has plentiful birdlife with a staggering number of waterbirds such as ducks, cormorants, ibis, swans, brolgas, pelicans, spoonbills and water hens.

RAIL ADVENTURES CLOSE TO HOME

It is an important feeding, resting and breeding area for an enormous number of migratory birds and is also listed as Important Wetlands in Australia.

We also spotted kangaroos and were on the lookout for reptiles including the local resident inland taipan. At night we could hear frogs calling their greetings.
