Together we can bounce back Caloundra retailers and businesses have joined forces in a determined effort to recover from the financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

T

he coronavirus pandemic has taken its toll on the usually bustling precinct that is Caloundra.

But with restrictions easing, and local businesses banding together, the retail sector is back with shop doors open and retailers welcoming visitors with open arms.

In a show of strength, the Caloundra Business Alliance and Caloundra Chamber of Commerce have joined forces to promote an even stronger economic and retail response to the crisis.

Formed in September 2017, the alliance offers business owners a chance to galvanise marketing and promotion efforts and to reach the community through unique events.

Alliance secretary Selina Smith says while the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce

focuses on business-to-business networking, the alliance focuses on “connecting businesses with the community�.

There have been some changes to the committee, with original members coming back together with the added support of Colleen Koos from Coastal Chiropractic and new member Niki Selig from Selig Jewellers. “It makes sense that we join forces as we have all aspects of moving Caloundra forward covered,’’ Ms Smith says. “We have been working hard on brainstorming ideas to revitalise the Caloundra CBD post COVID-19.�

The chamber’s Olivia Sainsbury says Caloundra has a bright future with plenty of upcoming activities planned. “We have population growth in Aura with families moving in weekly, and businesses

taking over space in the industrial park,’’ she says. “The CBA and chamber are working together on additional projects. The popular Ferris wheel and Caloundra Twilight Markets will be back and running through the school holiday period. “There is plenty happening in Caloundra so be sure to pay us a visit.�

A great experience for the family is to have a walk in the outdoors along Bulcock Street and surrounding streets before stopping to snap up something delicious from one of the cafes along the Bulcock Esplanade to enjoy as a picnic.

he Sunshine Coast has everything we could want or need. Where else can you swim with whales, enjoy world-class food looking over the beach, hike the Glass House Mountains, and get access to the latest fashions all in one day?

I have spoken with owners and managers at coastal businesses like the Moffat Beach Brewing Co, SEA LIFE Aquarium, Rockliff Seafoods, Wide World of Lights, Rice Boi and Cozie Swimwear in Caloundra. Businesses like these and many, many more have struggled in recent months and some have stayed open only through the Morrison government’s JobKeeper program and other support.

With state borders closed, there are far fewer domestic tourists coming here. This

means less money coming in from outside the region, fewer jobs available for the people who live here, and a weaker economy. While the Queensland Labor government continues to delay opening the borders, we need to find a way to replace that lost income from inside our region.

We need to pull together as a community and do all we can to encourage and support these terrific Sunshine Coast businesses ourselves. That’s why I’ve created a grassroots campaign called #SupportSunshineCoast.

It’s easy to get involved. All you have to do is #shoplocal, #staylocal or #playlocal, and while you’re at it, jump online to tell your friends all about it with the hashtag #SupportSunshineCoast. If you live down on the coast, it’s time to spend a weekend in a lodge in the stunning hinterland. If you live up the range, why not spend a weekend here by the beach and breathe the sea air?

Together I believe we can get thousands of posts with this hashtag on social media in the months to come and show the rest of Australia where the best place to shop, stay and play really is. In fact, you can add the hashtags #shoplocal, #staylocal or #playlocal to your posts if you would like as well.

In the weeks and months to come please, plan a weekend away in another part of our region, choose a local shop for the products you need or splash out at one of our fantastic boutiques. Consider trying out a local activity, have breakfast at a local cafe or eat at one of our terrific restaurants. Finally, don’t forget to post about it on social media and, if you are in Bokarina, pop into my office to collect a #SupportSunshineCoast shopping bag.

These have been dark times for many.

However, amid these dark times we have seen amazing resilience and adaptability.

With the federal government’s support, the Sunshine Coast has not given up. Now it is up to all of us to build the Sunshine Coast we want to see in the months and years ahead.

Together, I know we can get our region through this crisis and ensure we emerge on the other side stronger than ever before.

hispers Cocktail Bar & Lounge opened in mid-January, following what director Lisa Walsh describes as “five months of extensive renovations of the old bank building, over two levels”.

Sophistication meets a relaxed, coastal vibe, with taste bud-tantalising drinks and food offerings. “It’s the type of venue where you can take your time to eat and drink, and experience quality entertainment,” Ms Walsh says.

The venue is home to a baby grand piano, and local pianists and vocalists perform regularly. “Friday and Saturday nights are most popular, with live entertainment, which sees most of the venue singing along to pop and rock classics on the piano,” adds Ms Walsh.

“Wednesdays are our jazz nights, while Sunday afternoons will shortly become a hub for jazz and sax lovers with a lunch/ drink special. People can also enjoy blind whisky tastings and whisky masterclasses.

“The former bank vault was ideal to provide a private room for blind tastings, whisky experiences and whisky flights. The

whisky vault still has its original door and fittings, and has since been fitted with a custom table and lighting, repurposed fence palings on the walls to provide a vintage atmosphere, and a range of pictures showcasing distilleries and whisky-related images from the early 1900s, including a copy of the US patent for the bourbon barrel.”

Functions are a speciality for the team, with booths a popular option. “Several booths accommodate eight to 10 persons at a time, while each of our VIP lounges accommodate 14 to 16 persons each, and can be consolidated to provide a dedicated function area for up to 50 people,” Ms Walsh adds.

There is so much to look forward to in the weeks and months to come as our region rebounds from a trying start to the year.

elcome back! I hope you are all doing well in light of recent circumstances and that everyone has been enjoying the glorious weather and the opportunity to catch up with family and friends. It is good to see so many people out and about exercising.

If you are a visitor to our beautiful region, welcome! Please stay and play a while. Caloundra is a must-see destination for shopping, dining and holidaying, and don’t forget to walk along Pumicestone Passage and enjoy our beautiful beaches.

For local business operators, it has been a trying start to the year. As a former small business owner, and Sunshine Coast Council Economy Portfolio holder, I know the difficult decisions you have faced.

Council is here for you. Council’s website offers a range of support, such as free professional advice, fee and lease waivers, upskilling program Level Up and workplace wellbeing program B-Well & Prosper. Council also put together the great publication Operation Bounce Back with chambers, My Weekly Preview and industry associations to support local businesses, so see if you can grab a copy.

We haven’t stopped though, we are working towards our economy resurgence plan to keep supporting you.

As the COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease, there is a lot to celebrate and

enjoy. I am excited to welcome back Australia’s tallest travelling Ferris wheel, and I look forward to seeing the sights of our beautiful region from 35 metres up over the next couple of months. I am sure it will be a big hit, as it was last year. It will be a great outing these school holidays.

I am also excited to see the suspended catenary lighting installation on Bulcock Street. This lighting feature has been some time in the planning, and I’m delighted that it is part of our streetscape.

It is good to see the Caloundra Regional Gallery has re-opened, and if you’ve been looking for a new book, you’ll be glad the Caloundra Library is open too.

I am enjoying my new role as the local councillor and look forward to connecting with you and hear how I can support you in the City of Beaches.

raeme Bowden is passionate about books. But it’s not just his enthusiasm for books that has made him a respected member of Caloundra's business community. It’s also his desire to support local authors and suggest non-mainstream publications to connect the community to an exciting world of writers and the written word.

It’s been just over three decades since Mr Bowden and his wife Chris purchased the Angus and Robertson franchise in Caloundra. People from all walks of life have visited the Caloundra bookstore. Mr Bowden says one thing everyone has in common is their passion for books and their love for reading, which gets people excited when they step through the door. He’s a big believer in supporting local authors and says that is one of the best parts of his job.

“It was 32 years ago we decided to holiday in Caloundra and it was then that we decided we wanted to stay and make our lives here,” he says.

The BookShop has experienced many challenges over the years but the support of the customers has kept it alive. “It was a big decision for us when Angus and Robertson decided to close their retail outlets to become an independent bookstore, but we are glad that we did,” Mr Bowden says.

He says that one thing he loves is recommending little-known names that become best sellers. “Not much tops it when we recommend a book by an unknown

Graeme Bowden author and it becomes a best seller or other people start asking for it.

“In July/August, we expect to see Caloundra local and now international author Jessica Townsend’s next book come out for middle-grade readers. We are honoured to have had Jessica do two book signings in store so far and look forward to welcoming her back again in the future.”
