Get ready to laugh Hold on to your hats because Australia’s funniest festival is coming to Caloundra.

W

hat happens when Shane Jacobson, Fiona O’Loughlin, Michala Banas and Dave O’Neil get together with some of Australia’s best bands and musical talent?

We’re not quite sure, but we know it will be hilarious and a lot of fun!

More than 20 of Australia’s biggest names in comedy and music will feature at a three-day festival of laughter, tunes and food in August.

That’s Not My Dog – The Festival will be staged from August 26 to 28 at the Kings Beach park, Caloundra. Australian entertainment legend Shane Jacobson, whose movie That’s Not My Dog inspired the festival, leads a stellar line-up of comedians and musical artists in three days hilarious storytelling, fantastic food and Aussie music.

For his movie, Mr Jacobson gathered the cream of Australia’s comedy and

entertainment community on a country property with hilarious results.

The festival draws on this concept.

The festival precinct areas at Kings Beach will include a main stage, food and bar space, comedy and open-mic space, local musicians and large screens.

Joining the comedic headliners will be Aussie music icons Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows, Killing Heidi and Ross Wilson & The Peaceniks.

“That’s Not My Dog – The Festival is unlike any other festival in Australia,” Mr Jacobson says. “We are thrilled to be staging Australia’s funniest festival on the Sunshine Coast.

“The festival will get Australians laughing again as we combine hilarious joke and storytelling with brilliant music and amazing local food, beer and wine.

“A big thank you to the Sunshine Coast Council for supporting this unique event which will attract people from all over Australia to Queensland for a long weekend of laughter, fun and relaxation.”

Tell us about Whitepepper?

We are primarily a homewares store, but with a twist. Within our store we have The Pods. The Pods are a collection of retail spaces within Whitepepper.

They are: Blushing Ivy Home Fragrance, Bespoke Plants, [we have an amazing Conservatory, out the back] Go For Zero and Willelaine Aromatherapy. We sell really lovely wares for your home and focus on looking after our clients, making our store an experience not just a retail space. I am very proud of Whitepepper and our Whitepepper family.

How do you know what to buy for Whitepepper?

I love beautiful things! When I’m on a buying trip I don’t really have a preconceived list of what I’m searching for. I just go shopping, I buy things that I like, whether it’s a comfortable chair or beautiful wrapping paper. Whitepepper is a beautiful space, a lovely store, full of gorgeousness.

When did you realise homewares was your passion?

Is there a piece of home styling advice you’ve been given over the years that you still stick by?

I’ve always loved beautiful spaces, and like most people, the easiest space to make beautiful is your home, and it doesn’t have to cost a lot either! When I was little, I would decorate my cubby house, repaint it, move things around, and paint it again. I grew up in a beautiful art deco home, that I loved.

Everything was modest, but gorgeous. Think stucco plaster walls, timber mantles above the fireplaces, floral carpet [it was gorgeous] a vase full of flowers from the garden. Ahhhh happy, happy days!

Yes, basically, if you love it, it will work. I’ve never worried about making something ‘fit in’. I’m not saying, throw everything together and cross your fingers, but if there is a piece that grabs your heart, go for it. Often, when I’m helping with styling a home, we find that there are so many things in your home already that just need to be repositioned to give them new life. Mix in a few new pieces and you have a lovely space.

DINGLE AVENUE This colourful, massive mural snapshots Caloundra’s cultural identity and history. The mural captures the quintessential feeling of Caloundra’s past and present through quirky colourful drawings of iconic locations, activities and events in Caloundra, such as the heritage lighthouses and Pa & Ma Bendall (surfing pioneers) alongside the Caloundra Music Festival, the mullet

fishermen, the Strand building and Pumicestone Passage.

LAMKIN LANE Turn into this hidden laneway and you will unearth three beautiful murals. The changing rooms at historic Kings Beach Bathing Pavilion are playfully captured in a quirky mural. The repurposed photograph of a female bather is modernised with splashes

of fresh, neon colour. Adjacent to the pavilion mural, is a bold blue besser brick Aboriginal mural. Geometric patterned besser brick was a popular building material in decades past.

The retro feel and the symbolic connection to water that speaks to Caloundra’s coastal heritage is captured in the design.

The final Lamkin Lane mural features Caloundra’s oldest lighthouse. Built in 1896,

the heritage listed lighthouse sits on the top of the ridge in Canberra Terrace facing the shipping channel through Moreton Bay. The mural is cared for by Friends of the Lighthouse and the lighthouse itself is open twice a month to the public.

MEMORY LANE This small alley way located off Bulcock Street is affectionately known by locals as Memory Lane. Here, the murals feature images supplied by the local Caloundra community.

The patchwork art showcases the area’s connection to its coastal history, the ocean, surf lifesaving and Caloundra’s surf culture.

WILLIAMSON LANE Here you will discover the larger than life mural of Caloundra’s famous surfing duo Ma and Pa Bendall. The husband and wife surfing team are an integral part of Caloundra’s surf culture and the mural is a fitting tribute to the pair. Moving on through Williamson Lane the murals become more modern in style capturing the revitalisation of this coastal town and its emerging cultural scene. Williamson Lane, is also home to four oversized murals, which were created as part of the Horizon Festival of Arts and Culture 2016 by contemporary artists Fuzeillear, Thom Stuart, David Houghton and Joel Birch.

The streetscape designers, part of Australia’s First Coat graffiti collaboration,

completely transformed some of Caloundra’s walls and alleyways with eclectic street art.

CALOUNDRA REGIONAL GALLERY The downtown mural trail concludes at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery. Part children’s illustration, part magical monocycle story, this creation is truly whimsical. It is the result of a collaboration between Western Australian artists Andrew Frazer and Kyle HughesOdgers.

OLD FAVOURITE Kings Beach is without a doubt one of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular beach locations. It is also one of the oldest in terms of tourist attractions.

In 1937, bitumen was laid along Caloundra Road providing a more reliable access to the town. According to Sunshine Coast Council’s Heritage website, “the fashionable Spanish style architecturally designed Kings Beach Pavilion, with kiosk and changing sheds, is completed to cater for the influx of tourists enjoying the first surfing beach north of Brisbane. At this time the sand dunes close by were levelled to make way for a car park”.

Chilli Plum Meatballs

2-Ingredient Chocolate Bread SERVES 8 • 4 cups full-fat chocolate ice cream • 3 cups self-raising flour

Mango Chia Pudding SERVES 4 • Half a cup of chia seeds • 1 tablespoon honey • 420g can of coconut milk • 1 large mango 1. In a large bowl, whisk the coconut milk and honey until nicely combined. Add the chia seeds and stir well.

2. Cover with cling wrap and rest for 20 minutes.

3. Stir to dissolve any clumps, cover and let them soak overnight in the refrigerator.

4. Spoon evenly across four glass serving cups.

5. Pile high with freshly cut mango.

1. Preheat oven to 160C. 2. Lie a 23 x 13cm loaf tin with baking paper and set aside.

3. Place softened ice cream in a bowl.

4. Add flour and mix until just combined; do not over-beat or the dough will become tough when cooked.

5. Spoon the mixture into the tin and distribute evenly.

6. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes or until a skewer pushed into the centre removes clean.

Optional: Top with a deliciously simple chocolate buttercream: Mix together ½ cup softened butter, 1½ cups pure icing sugar, 2 tablespoons cacao powder and 2 tablespoons milk (or cream). This gorgeous icing can be piped or spread over the bread, scattered with chopped marshmallows.

• 500g pork mince (or chicken or turkey) • 1 cup fresh coriander leaves and stems • 250g (jar) plum sauce (I used SPC’s Plum Sauce) • 1/4 cup sweet chilli and ginger sauce 1. In a large bowl, mix together pork mince and coriander and season with sea salt and cracked pepper.

2. Using a generous tablespoon, roll into balls.

3. Heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium high heat and cook the balls until golden.

4. Combine plum sauce and sweet chilli and ginger sauce.

5. Pour the sauce over the meatballs and gently toss to coat.

6. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes; tossing occasionally.

Optional: Serve over egg noodles, sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds.
