Support our local businesses A few words from the CEO, Brady Sullivan

pring is a beautiful time of year in Caloundra. It’s a time to admire new growth, bask in the warming conditions and explore the opportunities of our beautiful coastal lifestyle. This spring offers similar opportunities for our business community. Small business acts as a conduit for community through which life takes place on the Coast. It provides employment, opportunity and meaning for our friends, neighbours and family. For both business owners and employees, it puts food on the table, a roof over our heads and builds opportunity for future generations. To best understand and advocate for our community as we navigate the COVID pandemic and into the future, the Caloundra Chamber recently partnered with the University of the Sunshine Coast to complete the Business Health Check Survey. The report tells the tale of a region that is inspired by its beautiful landscapes and a burgeoning community of increasingly diverse opportunity; a city of beaches that helps drive 97.5 per cent of local business owners to enjoy their work-life balance and draw satisfaction from their work. Our

region’s rapidly changing population and investment is exemplified through a community who self-identify as innovators, who build new opportunities. This is evident in the 68.6 per cent of businesses who agree that their business is financially performing well and almost 60 per cent who are confident in the local economy. Even with the barriers of the pandemic, many businesses are performing extremely well. Though it is clear from the results that the effect of the pandemic has not been equal to all businesses – particularly those in tourism, hospitality and retail as they are forced to bear the brunt of COVID restrictions to help keep our community safe. So what can we do as a community to support those who are both flourishing and those who need help? Buy local! Explore a new cafe in town, check out our local artisan brewers and distillers or book your next holiday through a local travel agent. Most importantly, feel empowered to talk about the stories of opportunity in the region. The survey results clearly demonstrated the uncertainty of the pandemic and our responses is not just driving vulnerability in the bank accounts of business owners but also increasingly negative outcomes for their mental health and wellbeing. This is why the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, through support of the Queensland Mental Health Commissioner, DESBT, USC and Sunshine Coast Council has partnered with local organisation the Thompson Institute to provide mental health and wellbeing programs free to local businesses. Find out more information about the study and partnership on our socials @CaloundraChamber. Brady Sullivan, CEO Caloundra Chamber of Commerce

From strength to strength

n 2017, business owners came together to form the Caloundra Business Alliance (CBA) with the mission of making the Caloundra CBD an even more vibrant place to spend the day. Since that summer in 2017, our membership has grown and we now represent more than 80 members. And our membership is still growing. In 2018 we launched Shop Caloundra, which includes our website, Facebook page and, of course, the Shop Caloundra Gift Card. Over the past four years we have had great support from Sunshine Coast Council, local state MP Jason Hunt and Facebook Community Fund grants. When we started in 2017 we certainly did not envisage the problems that small business in Caloundra would face during 2020/21, but I am proud to say that we have traversed these problems and we are looking back on the past two years as our most successful. During this time we have supported the Shop Caloundra magazines with the help

and support of My Weekly Preview. This edition is our 10th edition since 2017. We have launched our new Shop Caloundra website, supported businesses through advertising and social media, worked with the council and the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce on Christmas events, and have initiated many radio campaigns to promote the Caloundra CBD. But the one initiative we are most proud of is The Shop Caloundra Gift Card. The Shop Caloundra Gift Card is a Shop Local campaign to support local businesses in the Caloundra CBD. When you purchase a Shop Caloundra Gift Card you are supporting your own local community by keeping funds local. The cards can be used at more than 70 businesses in the Caloundra CBD and make the perfect gift for someone you love. So this Christmas support local and purchase a Shop Caloundra Gift Card. Selina Smith, president Caloundra Business Alliance

Time of our lives It’s all happening in and around Caloundra – so get out and see what’s on offer and support your local small businesses in the process.

Councillor Terry Landsberg, Division two THANKS FOR SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL FESTIVAL The music industry has done it pretty tough over the past 18 months. All the musicians who played at Caloundra Music Festival over the October long weekend were so grateful to finally get on stage in front of a large crowd. The festival presented 350 performers through 63 acts, engaged close to 300 crew and some 350 volunteers to people power our three-day festival. Further to this, the festival contracted more than 100 local suppliers for operational support with lights, audio, cleaning, security and much more.

05.indd 1

I’d like to thank everyone who attended and acknowledge some of our small business sponsors – Norton Music Factory, Mooloolaba Music and Your Mates Brewing Co – for their contribution to the festival. Overall, the feedback has been extremely positive! Everyone worked together to stay COVID safe and we were able to celebrate festival life again. I can’t wait for Caloundra Music Festival in 2022!

community to support local businesses by buying from a store with a door. When you buy local, you’re supporting more than just the local economy. Many of our small businesses are owned by local families who really need local support. With Christmas fast approaching, it’s a great time to get your gifts from a great local shop. Jump on to the new Buy Local Sunshine Coast platform and see how you can support local first.

BUY LOCAL Did you know there are more than 33,000 small businesses registered in our local government area, providing critical employment opportunities for our workforce. Our local business are the backbone of our region’s economy and have shown amazing resilience in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re calling on the Sunshine Coast

CALOUNDRA GETS READY TO LIGHT UP THIS CHRISTMAS Christmas will be here before we know it! Make sure you are in town on December 3 to kick off the festivities with the Christmas Tree lighting at Felicity Park and magical Christmas markets in Bulcock Street. Then bring your pet down for a fun Santa photo in Felicity Park on December 12. Keep an eye on council’s Facebook page for more details.

BIKE TRAILS BRING ADVENTURE TO SUGAR BAG ROAD Looking for a weekend adventure? The pump track is now open at the Sugar Bag Road Mountain Bike Trail precinct. The new track is easy and fun for all ages so make sure you head down and give it a go with the kids this summer. The new track is part of stage one of the Caloundra Town Reserve Mountain Bike Trails project, which has seen the delivery of a kiosk, new toilets, showers, wash-down bays and storage, a new trail dual slalom run, an advanced skills area and the junior skills area for children. The project is proudly funded by the local government and Queensland government’s COVID Works for Queensland program. Stage two of the project is set for completion in the first half of 2022 and will include a spectator seating area, further landscaping and much more. Shop Caloundra | Spring 2021 5

Kings Beach from Perle Hotel

into the ’60s

In the 1960s, Caloundra was all ‘dunnies, dirt roads and tank water’ and with Bulcock Street running through its centre, it was really a big country town on the beach. WORDS: Dorothy Whittington.

t was first promoted as the ‘Gem of the Sunshine Coast’ to motorists leaving the Bruce Highway at the Landsborough turnoff, and although the biggest of the early seaside townships, Caloundra was the family destination. It was the quieter and more sedate end of the region, where children could paddle in the still waters of Pumicestone Passage or young surfers could always find a wave. Bulcock Street, a dirt road in 1960, still looked like the main street of a country town long after it became a tourist centre. And Bulcock remains the only Sunshine Coast beach beside a traditional CBD. It was a long journey – about two hours – from Brisbane to Duck Holes Creek near the aerodrome and Dicky Beach was so far

on the fringes of town it was said to be “out in the sticks”. Like all of the beach towns, Caloundra had historically taken second place to the hinterland. It was first known as ‘Caloundra via Landsborough’ as visitors would arrive at Landsborough railway station to board a bus or book a private vehicle for the journey down to the sea. Landsborough, or Mellum Creek when it was on the Cobb & Co line, was at the foot of the timber-rich range. It was renamed after the Scottish explorer William Landsborough when the railway line opened in 1890. William Landsborough had led an 1861 search for Burke and Wills in the Gulf of Carpentaria and was the first explorer to cross the continent from north to south.

The government gave him £2000 in 1881, which he used to buy a property at Caloundra he named Loch Lamerough. (Roy Henzell bought “1000 acres for £1000” of that 2372 acres – most of it impenetrable swamp – at Golden Beach in 1946. It was considered to be in the flats and so far out of town it was unlikely anyone would ever want to live there. Today it’s called Pelican Waters.) Back to the 1960s. Nobody had to lock their doors, because there was only one road into Caloundra and therefore only one road back out of town. The coastal road north to Mooloolaba was a rutted, sandy track that wasn’t sealed until 1964. Heading into Bulcock Beach, there were trawlers and the fishing fleet tied up, with jetties and little houseboats. The population

would treble or quadruple at holiday times when the holidays flats would fill up and caravans set up at Kings Beach. Oronsay Avenue, although only a few blocks away from Bulcock Street, was also a dirt road and nearby Canberra Terrace was a narrow track with small fibro houses lined up on each side. The central town area extended only to Minchinton Street, with only a few houses beyond that. There was only one primary school and older students travelled to Nambour High. In the town there were two doctors, one dentist and two pubs – the Perle, which made way for the Kings Beach Tavern, and the Reef. If you wanted to dine out, you went to the Perle. The Kings Beach store was the only place to get a cold drink on a hot day. The old Strand picture theatre with its canvas seats, which was something of a landmark on Bulcock Street, was demolished and replaced with the Tudor-

style shopping and cinema complex The Strand, in 1980. In 1968, a fully furnished five-bedroom home “with all amenities and 120-degree views of the ocean” could be purchased for $10,000. Caloundra’s population had grown so much that, in 1968, the Landsborough Shire Council moved its headquarters out of Landsborough to the corner of Bulcock and Minchinton streets. Those new offices were too small by 1995. Caloundra’s population virtually tripled in the decade from 1970 to 1980, and Landsborough Shire officially became Caloundra City Council in December 1987. The old beach houses and brick six-pack holiday units have long since been replaced by elegant apartment complexes. What hasn’t changed is Caloundra’s spectacular views west across Pumicestone Passage to the Glass House Mountains and east to the shipping lanes off King’s Beach headland. Ginger Glazed Ham

Cheat’s Pavlova

• ½ ham on the bone • 150g Buderim Ginger marmalade • 30 cloves • 24 fresh, plump cherries

• 200g dark chocolate • 400g plump, red cherries • 500g pavlova base • 300ml cream whipped

Preheat oven to 170°C. Remove outer skin of ham and reserve (use when storing ham to keep moist). Using a sharp knife, score the fat into diamond shapes. Place ham on rack in a roasting tray and brush with marmalade glaze. Pour 1¼ cups of water into roasting pan. Bake ham for 25 minutes until golden. Remove from oven and set aside. If there is liquid in the base of the pan, place on the stove and reduce over medium heat until syrupy then pour over ham before serving. Garnish with cherries before serving.

To make the drizzle, place the dark chocolate in a ceramic bowl and heat in the microwave in 30-second increments, stirring after each nice and smooth. Dip in 12 cherries, with stalk intact, into the chocolate. Set aside to set. Place the pavlova on a cake stand and pour the remaining chocolate mixture over the cake, starting in the middle, allowing it to run over the sides for a decadent and dramatic look. Top with whipped cream and decorate with loads of fresh cherries, studding randomly with the chocolate coated ones. Serve immediately. Optional: Sprinkle with chopped hazelnuts.

Santa’s Bark Melt 200g milk or dark chocolate in a microwave in 30-second increments until nice and smooth. Pour into a paper-lined baking tray. Top with whatever nuts, Goji berries, hundreds and thousands, caramel popcorn etc. Place in fridge for 15 minutes or until set. Cut into random shards to serve.
