Stroke of genius It’s something every reno job requires, and it’s the simplest way to breathe new life into a room – a lick of paint. Whether it’s the entire house or just one wall, here’s all you need to know to get your paint job right.

Colour basics Know nothing about colour theory? Here’s a quick lesson. There are three primary colours – yellow, red and blue. From these we get the three secondary colours – purple (by mixing red and blue), green (blue and yellow) and orange (red and yellow). Tertiary colours are made by mixing two secondary colours. Neutrals are white, black and grey. Unless you’re planning to paint your entire home the one colour, you’ll need to understand how colours work with each other. There are basically two colour combinations – complementary and analogous. Analogous colours sit next to each other on the colour wheel and they tend to create a harmonious combination. Complementary colours are those that are opposite on the wheel. Using complementary colours (say a teal blue paint on the wall with punchy orange accessories) will create a room with lots of drama. Also remember colours have a temperature. Blues and greens are cool, while oranges and reds are warm. However, a cool colour such as blue can be made warmer by adding a red tone to it, while a green can be warmed up with more yellow. Understanding this will help you see that even neutrals (which have either a warm or cool undertone) can fight with each other.

Doing it yourself? Follow these tips for a professional-looking job: • Before painting, prepare your walls. If there are any cracks or holes, fill these with a plaster filler. Let the plaster dry, then sand lightly to smooth it out. Dust the area and give the walls a thorough clean. • Remove or cover your furniture and cover powerpoints and light fittings. Lay down plastic to protect floors. • Measure up the room to see much paint you need. Take these measurements to your paint supplier, who will work out your requirements, or use an online paint calculator. We like the Haymes one at haymespaint.com.au/ inspiration/my-tools/paint-calculator/. • If the walls are new, it’s a good idea to use a primer or undercoat. If you’re going over a darker wall with a light paint, you’ll probably need an extra coat to cover the colour. • Stock up on the right tools. You’ll use brushes for trims, skirting boards and window frames, and cutting in on walls. Use rollers for large spaces. Always use a tray or small dish – tip out a small amount of paint from your tin into the tray or dish and top up as you go. That way you won’t introduce dirt into the paint tin. • Painting ceilings is tricky, but if you’re determined to do it yourself, paint the ceiling first – you don’t want to drip paint on your newly finished walls.

Light and colour Light – either natural or manmade – can influence how paint looks on the walls. Paint a piece of cardboard with your chosen paint sample and then take it around the room to see how the light in that room changes the paint colour. Tape it to the wall and see how the colour changes at different times of day.

Give your Concrete a Colour It Australia Makeover N& COME I UGE RH SEE OU AREA Y DISPLA Inspired choice When deciding on paint colours, take inspiration from friends’ and neighbours’ houses, pull pictures out of magazines and off websites, and collect brochures and swatches. That way you can build up a story of the colours that suit your home and your taste. Dark or light, edgy or classic? When deciding on colours you’ll probably be drawn to particular ones. But remember, light colours will help open up a small space, while dark colours will draw the walls in, making a large room cosier. So while you might like the idea of a dark burgundy for the small guest bedroom, ask yourself if it’s really the best choice. Also consider that while Pantone’s colour of the year might be your go-to shade now, you might not love it next year. Unless you’re prepared for a new paint job in 12 months, sticking to neutral colours is your safest bet. Still, have fun with it. If you’re concerned about a colour but just love the idea of being bold and using canary yellow in the dining room and cornflower blue in the kitchen, do so on just one or two feature walls, and paint the rest of the house in neutral tones.

how to: CREATE A TERRARIUM You will need: • Small pebbles • Charcoal • Small plants • Potting mix • Gloves • Spray bottle • A container or terrarium

Be cautious about overwatering your terrarium plants, especially if you have chosen succulents. The glass walls of a terrarium trap in moisture and heat, creating a greenhouse effect. This means water won’t evaporate and it can cause mould to grow in your terrarium. If succulents aren’t your thing, other plants that work well in terrariums include African violets, friendship plants, small ferns such as baby’s tears, polka dot plants, begonias, crotons and dracaena.

Going up If you have a small backyard or courtyard, potted plants might be your only option for a garden. But that doesn’t mean a boring cluster of pots on the ground. Go up, not out with your greenery – think vertical gardens (you can buy kits from your local hardware store), window boxes, wall-mounted garden beds and shelves to hold your potted pretties.

Material world If you’ve invested in quality outdoor cushions, it pays to look after them. While fabrics designed for the outdoors are more durable than other fabrics, they will still stain, fade and get mouldy if you leave them out in the sun and rain. So store them away when you’re not using them and wash your cushion covers and inserts separately. Always wash them according to the care instructions. Ensure both the insert and covers are well and truly dry before popping the covers back on.

Above board If you have a timber deck, give it some much-needed love. Remove all the furniture and give the timber a brush with a stiff broom to remove dirt and leaves that have accumulated between the boards. Grab a deck-cleaning fluid such as Cabot’s Deck Clean to thoroughly clean the timber. Then you can re-stain – just one coat should lift and rejuvenate the timber, all ready for next summer.
