Create a home gym

I

f you’re serious about f tness, have you thought about incorporating a home gym into your next renovation?

If you have, then no doubt you’ve considered the type of exercise equipment you’d like. But if you’re serious about creating a beautiful space that looks great – and that you’ll use every day – there are a few other things to keep in mind.

Make a list of priorities in the pre-planning stages to ensure the gym becomes a practical addition.

The more you like going into the space, the more you will use it.

You’ll probably be looking at getting a treadmill, stationary

bike, rowing machine and one or two other large pieces of gym equipment. It is ideal that you have plenty of room around each piece plus space to do free weights and room to pop down a yoga mat for stretching. If you have free weights, medicine balls and other pieces of equipment, ensure you have storage to pop them away at the end of each workout.

If you have space, placing a bathroom by the gym is a great idea, or at least have the gym close enough to a bathroom that you don’t have to traipse through the entire house to have a shower.

Don’t stop the music. Keep the motivation up with your favourite tunes, and invest in decent speakers for your home gym.

See the light Take care when lighting your gym.

Start a lighting plan after you decide on the position of the equipment so you’re not knocking your head on a pendant every time you go for a run.

Keep in mind you don’t want to be blinded by an overhead light that shines in your eyes every time you lie down to stretch. Wall sconces and lamps that throw light upwards are great for this reason, and they are also a f attering light, so when you look in the gym mirror, you’ll like what you see!

Up and down Hard tile f oors are not a good choice for a gym. Timber, or better yet sprung timber, is the best option. Also consider soundproof ng the f oor and walls – gyms, even home ones, can be noisy places. In a soundproof room you can crank up the music and go for it without disturbing the family.

Consider placing a full-length mirror on one of the walls – this isn’t just for vanity as it’s sometimes helpful to see yourself when you’re exercising. But from a design point of view, mirrors make a room look twice as large, helping to bounce light around the space.

Hang some beautifully framed, simple artwork or photos as well, so you have something serene to look at while you sweat it out.

Other tips • When designing, be sure you can easily access all equipment and that the equipment won’t be blocking doors or windows.

• If you don’t have windows, and even if you do, install a fan and consider a ventilation system to keep you comfortable and the room fresh.

• Don’t forget to include suff cient powerpoints.

TVs and treadmills Consider installing a television in your gym. If you love to watch the box, doing it while you work out is much healthier than slumping on the couch every night. Planning your kitchen? Answer these questions before giving the okay on the f oorplan: • Is the food prep area away from the main thoroughfare?

• Are drawers clear of all walls?

• Has adequate allowance been made for the major appliances?

• Is there any chance you will hit your head on a wall cupboard when prepping or cooking?

• Has enough clearance been allowed for the fridge?

• Has space been set aside for a dishwasher?

• Has provision been made for bins?

• Is there allowance for a hood and f ue above the stove into the open air?

• Will the open doors of appliances such as microwaves bump into walls, other f ttings or cupboards?

• Have wall cupboards got enough support to prevent shelves from sagging?

Style it up While practical considerations must be given priority in the kitchen, don’t forget to style it as you would any other room in the home.

Include comfortable, elegant seating, wellplanned lighting and well-placed accessories.

Marvellous marble Many seasoned renovators will tell you to avoid marble in the kitchen – this natural stone is quite soft and porous so scratches easily, and shows up stains from things like red wine and fruit. If you love the sleek, clean look, it’s probably best to avoid it, but if you have your heart set on marble, it is worth investigating. A marble bench will develop scratches but you might be okay with that. Ask your local supplier or kitchen manufacturer for advice.

Painting your walls? Choose a gloss or semi-gloss for your bathrooms – they repel water and are easier to clean than a matte paint. But gloss will show up bumps and imperfections, so be sure your walls are smooth before applying your paint.

WATER WORKS If you are creating your bathroom from scratch, you’ll have the luxury of placing your plumbing wherever you want. Most bathrooms fall into one of three designs – either one-, two- or three-wet-wall layouts.

While a single-wet-wall layout is the most limiting, in that your vanity, toilet and shower all run along one wall, it’s usually the most cost-effective way of dealing with plumbing.

TILING TIP When laying tiles, be sure to grab a damp sponge and wipe away adhesive or grout that makes its way onto the face of the tile straight away.

BUYING ART FOR THE HOME If there is one thing that can stump even the most seasoned home renovators and decorators, it’s buying art for their interior – and exterior – spaces. And we’re not talking about cute prints and homemade canvases. If you want to invest in professional pieces to enhance your home, here are some tips: 1. Decide what you like. Do you have a style you gravitate towards – tribal or contemporary, oils or watercolours, portraits, landscapes or something different altogether? Then think about how this type of art will work with the interior design of your home.

2. Research artists, visit galleries and look online, to familiarise yourself with various periods, mediums and styles.

3. By now you should have an idea of costs, so set a budget.

4. Talk to friends or acquaintances who have experience buying art.

Find out about reputable dealers and understand the process of buying. That way you’ll be much more conf dent when it comes time to bid at your f rst auction or approach a gallery owner to buy a piece and negotiate a price.

5. Art is an investment, but ultimately you want a piece that will put a smile on your face every time you walk past it. It’s a cliche, but the best advice is to buy what you love.

6. Keep all documentation related to the sale – receipts, quotes, catalogues. This is what will be used to authenticate your piece and place a value on it. Who knows, in years to come it might be worth much more than you paid for it.

BEDROOM // Mood lighting For ease, create a lighting scheme that can be controlled from both the door and the bed. When it comes to bedside tables, think about function, but form is also so important. Old-fashioned desk reading lamps look great in contemporary spaces, while dramatic f oor lamps are a good choice for larger, formal rooms.

If you don’t have the space for bedside tables, hang pendants to take the place of bedside lamps.

You will always need more light than you think, so include a range of lighting – overhead lights, lamps and wall sconces – for maximum f exibility.

Give it a rest Creating the perfect bedroom is easy when you know how. When choosing a bed, make sure it is in proportion to the room. A low headboard will create a streamlined look without overpowering the space. Remember texture and layers when it comes to styling your bedroom. However, too many fabrics will be confusing. A few luscious pillows and cushions in a neutral tone, matched with a textured throw is plenty for the bed.

Tile the splashback Tiling a section of your kitchen wall such as a splashback is a relatively easy DIY job with the right tools and some know-how. When you order your tiles, grab more than you’ll think you need, about 10 to 15 per cent, and then get to work!

STEP 1 Decide on your design – there are many ways to lay the tiles – by gathering brochures and searching the internet.

STEP 2 Gather your materials including tiles, adhesives, grout and tile spacers. Tools you’ll need include a rubber mallet, trowels, tape measure, tile cutter, level, pencil and drop cloth.

STEP 3 Starting at the midpoint of your job, mark on the wall where your tiles will go. Your level will help keep things straight.

STEP 4 Apply your adhesive with a notched trowel. Don’t do the entire area, but cover enough wall for several tiles.

You’ll use your reference points to help guide you on where to place tiles, and don’t forget the spacers so you’ll have even grout lines.

STEP 5 Check as you go with the level to ensure the tiles are straight.

Make a retro chalkboard Chalkboards look great in any room of the home and are super handy – write shopping lists in the kitchen, leave sweet notes in the bedroom and pop up your favourite motivational mottos in the living area. Here’s an easy retro chalkboard you can make in no time.

1. First grab an old picture frame – a simple wooden one like your baby boomer parents might have used at school will create a really cute board. But an elaborate frame is also effective if you want a more sophisticated look.

2. Head to you local craft store or art supply shop and buy a sheet of black core foamboard plus some chalkboard paint, a craft knife,

3. Now grab your foamboard and get spraying. A foamboard is a great choice because it is nice and light, so you can hang your frame anywhere. If you are planning a chalkboard for the kids’ bedrooms, however, you might want to choose a stronger base.

4. Once the chalkboard paint is dry, measure your frame and, using your craft knife, cut the board so that it’s a couple of millimetres smaller than the outside of the frame.

5. Now glue the frame onto the board with your hot glue gun.

Add some string and mount it on the wall. Easy!
