I

love this time of year – the days are still warm but the nights are cooler, the beach is less crowded, and we don’t feel guilty about Sundays spent on the couch with a good book and a movie. But if you think the cooler months mean renovation projects are put on hold, it’s time to think again.

Some reno projects are better done in winter, when the sun isn’t beating down on newly painted walls and the beach isn’t beckoning.

Get winter ready

S

ummer has f nally left the Sunshine Coast, which means it’s time for home owners and renovators to make the home cosy for the months ahead. Winter might mean the winding down of reno projects for some, but for others the work continues, and one of the projects that’s hotting up at this time of year is sorting out the heating for the home.

If you have decided you must have a f replace in your newly renovated home, there are a few things to consider. As well as taking into account aesthetic considerations, such as the style of f replace and how it will sit in your

interior design, the most important considerations are generally more practical. Firstly, where will your new f replace go? Whether you go for gas, electric or wood-burning, placing it in a central position where it will most eff ciently heat a large area makes sense.

Safety is important too, so always go to a reputable supplier with a long history of installing heaters and f replaces on the Coast.

There is nothing more romantic than a wood-burning f re, but they can be energy wasters, as much of the heat can end up going up the chimney in traditional open f replaces. As such, slow-combustion wood heaters are a good option for

DIY do’s After a long, hot summer it’s time to tackle a few jobs around the home. It’s the perfect time to revitalise the deck – sand it back to remove scratches and give it a new coat of varnish. Then get stuck into the garden. Hire a chipper and feed in all branches and leaves that are lying around, which you can then use to mulch garden beds. While you’re hiring equipment, grab a high-pressure cleaner and clean paths and driveways, the house exterior and decks of mould and grime.

Gas f replaces have really come into their own in the past few years.

They simulate the look of wood burners but without the mess. If you have access to gas, they are def nitely worth considering.

Finally, once you have settled on a f replace for your reno, keep that heat inside by ensuring it doesn’t escape through windows, under draughty doors or between f oor boards. Pull your curtains across when you have the f re going, keep internal doors closed and block up any draughts.

Shades of winter If you’re looking for inspiration for the latest colours, take your cue from the fashion world. Winter looks are heavy with militaryinspired hues, unisex shades and the odd splash of colour. Look out for khakis, dusty pinks and blue-greys when shopping for paint, accessories and window coverings.

Softly, softly There are so many beautiful, affordable cushions and throws at our favourite homewares stores, but how to choose the ones that are right for your home? Your soft furnishings should co-ordinate with other elements of the room but that doesn’t mean they have to match. Going for patterns in similar sizes or the same undertone is a great way to bring harmony. And remember, unless your cushions and throws will be purely decorative, go for those in fabrics that are machine washable.

Get down You’ve probably noticed that those tiles, vinyl f oor coverings and timber boards are feeling cold underfoot, which means it’s the season for rug shopping. Remember the f oor is often the f rst thing you see when you enter a room, so going with striking patterns and styles can lift and revitalise a tired space. Be bold when choosing rugs.

Why we love mosaic tiles: • Mosaics don’t just look amazing, but given their size, they create a textured surface that is about as slip-resistant as you can get.

• If you don’t have the budget for an entire room reno, replacing just one wall of tiles with mosaics is a low-cost way to completely transform the bathroom.

Sit in the bath before you buy it. While your ideal tub might look stunning in the showroom, try before you buy to check for comfort, and for size. A grain of truth Most of us love the look of timber, but working with an over-abundance of woody features can make interior styling tricky. Too many timber f nishes in various colours and grains make a room look mismatched. When mixing your timber, in furniture, cabinetry and on the f oor, follow these rules to get it right: • Keep the grains the same. As a rule, a tighter, f ner grain is formal, while a looser, larger grain is more casual.

• All colours have a cool or warm undertone.

Keeping the undertone the same, even if the colours vary, will help in creating a unif ed look.

• Placing a visual boarder, such as a piece of furniture, between each timber piece will draw attention away from their differences.

CUT & PASTE Creating a mood board is a great first step when decorating. Here are tips on how to do it.

Take a look through home style magazines and you’ll notice the rooms that really stand out are more than just the sum of their parts. These rooms have drama, contrast, texture, personality and interest. They work because they have been carefully planned.

When styling your own home, you too can create winning rooms. And you do this by starting with a mood board.

A mood board helps focus your ideas. There are so many beautiful pieces of furniture, homewares, soft furnishings and paint colours out there, so it’s easy to get distracted. A mood board helps keep you on track.

The aim of a mood board is to bring together all the elements you love – paint and fabric swatches, sketches, pictures from magazines and catalogues, colours and styles, curtain and carpet samples – lay them all down and carefully remove what doesn’t work. The aim is to take away as much as to add, until you have all the elements to create the perfect space. And you haven’t yet spent a cent.

Tip Creating a mood board from scratch? Start with your statement piece, the element you must have in the room, such as an amazing bedhead, antique chair or designer rug. Take a picture of it, pin it up and build your mood board from there.

Moodboard how to: 1. Gather together your samples, cuttings, swatches and pictures and lay them out. You might want to grab a strong piece of cardboard or a corkboard to pin them to. Or simply stick them up on the wall.

2. It’s a good idea to lay out the elements as they would appear in the room – so carpet at the bottom, light f ttings up the top and soft furnishings in the middle. Try to have the size of the sample ref ect the space it will take up in the room. A paint card should be bigger than, say a swatch of fabric for the cushion.

3. Look for elements that don’t work, such as pieces that upset the balance, and remove these. How does your mood board feel now?

4. Is there anything missing? Add and subtract elements until you are happy.

Concrete in domestic settings is appearing in f ooring and benchtops, but if you can’t get enough of this material, how about some concrete vases and planters for indoors and out? And the good news is you can create these yourself on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Here’s how: STEP 1 Gather together your materials, including premixed concrete, rubber gloves, buckets to mix the concrete, cooking oil and a paint brush. You will also need plastic containers or boxes in various sizes to act as moulds for your concrete.

STEP 2 To make the moulds you will need a small container and a larger one – their variation in size will affect how thick the walls of your planter/vase will be. Then you will need to thoroughly coat the inside of the large mould, and the outside of the smaller mould, with your cooking oil (this is where your paintbrush comes in handy).

STEP 3 Now it’s time to pop on the gloves and mix your concrete. It’s a good idea to

keep the mixture quite thick so add less water than you would for other jobs.

Place some concrete in the larger mould – you don’t want to f ll it up because you’ll be pushing the smaller mould into the concrete. Don’t push your smaller mould too far down as you want to ensure you create a nice thick base. When you are happy with the placement, pop a weight in the smaller mould to keep it in place.

STEP 4 Once the concrete dries, you can carefully remove the smaller container, before tipping out your new planter from the larger container. They should come away from the containers easily thanks to the cooking oil. You can then add drainage holes by carefully drilling the bottom of the planter. Smooth out any rough edges with sandpaper.
