WHAT’S HOT IN HOMES? My Renovation brings you six design trends that are getting home owners talking.

BOLD BATHROOMS

Chandeliers, embossed wallpaper, chaise lounges, mood lighting, piped music. It used to be that renovators would look through interiors magazines admiring bathrooms that push the design boundaries, but then stick with the safe cream tile, glass and neutral paintwork. But today’s renovators are throwing caution to the wind and using their imagination in this room.

FLEXIBLE SPACES

Given the average modern family’s lifestyle – busy – what home owners want most out of their homes, and what home renovators are wanting out of their renos, is f exible spaces. Open-plan living areas that do double duty are the way to go – kitchens that include a study nook, entertainment areas that convert to a parents retreat. Busy parents want to engage with children and guests while they cook and the kitchen hub is less a trend and more a complete change from a generation ago, when it was merely a workspace tucked at the back of the home.

NEW COVERINGS

Can’t afford a full renovation? It doesn’t matter. Just rip out your old curtains and blinds and replace with new ones – it will look like the whole home has had a makeover. The old rule that all window coverings in the home had to match is no longer. Mix it up – shutters in the lounge, blinds in the kids’ bedrooms, f oaty curtains for mum and dad.

VARIETY IN WALLS

No longer concerned with uniformity, many home renovators are now splashing out and including neutrals in the living areas, pink in the girls’ rooms, blue for the boys, and stone in the parents retreat. Striped walls are also cropping up in children’s bedrooms, while other rooms are getting not one but several feature walls in different tones.

LOW-MAINTENANCE BACKYARDS

Unfortunately the closest many home owners get to doing the gardening is watching programs about it on TV. Pavers and decks are replacing lawns, while low-maintenance, water-wise plants that look great but require little attention are popular with home owners who want to relax in the garden and not work in it.

CARPET, CARPET AND MORE CARPET

It never really went away, but carpet has certainly fallen out of favour in the past decade. Still, renovators are going back to it, especially in bedrooms, remembering how soft underfoot this f oor covering is. New sustainable carpets take the sting out of this traditionally environmentally unfriendly product, while other products are easy to clean, super soft and long lasting.

BEADHEADS

ecorative accent and comfortable back support in one. The bedhead is today’s bedroom must-have. You might already have one, and if you don’t you can certainly purchase one, but while you’re in the DIY mood with your renovation, why not have a go at creating your own?

You can revamp an old bedhead or simply use some MDF cut to your desired size and shape. Measure up the MDF or bedhead to f nd out how much wadding and fabric to buy and while you’re at the fabric shop, pick up a staple-gun if you

don’t already have one.

Using the bare bedhead as a template, cut the wadding with a 200-millimetre trim, which you will need to fold over and then staple in place to the back.

Lay the fabric face down and place the bedhead on top (wadding face down too), then bulldog clip into position. Check that the fabric is smooth before stapling it into place.

Pop the headboard against the wall or secure to the bed frame and you are done. If you have leftover fabric whip up some cushion covers to complete your new-look bedroom.

ou haven’t really made it as a DIY renovator until you’ve walked into a bathroom supplier and got yourself excited about showerheads.

And why shouldn’t you? There is a huge range of products that promise varying shower experiences in a range of designs and prices.

Before you part with your cash there are a few things to think about.

These days it’s easy being green, with water-saving products. So stick this on top of your list, especially if you love a long shower.

Think about how you will use the shower. Hand showers are handy when helping the kids wash at the end

of the day, so are a great choice for families. And rail showers are good because they can adjust to the height of each family member.

Rain showers just scream luxury, though if you don’t want a wet head every time you step in for a wash they can be bothersome.

Consider the kind of spray you like as well – do you like a massaging jet or a gentle experience? nterior designers Brian Patrick Flynn, Betsy Burnham and Molly Luetkemeyer share these lighting tips.

USE YOUR SCONCE: Include wall sconces, which cast a f attering glow and serve as striking decorative pieces. Pick up sconces from your lighting retailer or at op shops and garage sales. If you buy them used, ask a lamp shop or electrician to check all the wiring and replace any worn parts before installing them.

Don’t light a room exclusively with overhead lighting. Light from above that isn’t balanced by lamplight can be “prison-like”, Luetkemeyer says. Instead create “pools of light” at different levels

for a warm, layered effect, she says. Flynn accomplishes this by choosing lamps at various heights. “It’s all a game of scale and proportion,” he says.

BACK TO OLD SCHOOL: Edison-style bulbs, with their gleaming f laments, have become popular and look great in industrial or vintage light f xtures or in chandeliers. But they are expensive and give minimal light.

So use them “as sculptural features integrated into lighting”, Flynn advises.

Burnham says these bulbs’ popularity may not last, so it’s probably impractical to invest in too many lamps or f xtures that look good only with them.

he quality of the building you call home can have an impact on your family’s health. Poor air quality in buildings has been linked to illness, food sensitivities and allergies, and unfortunately a renovation can throw even more airborne nasties into the mix – many building materials, paints and f ooring products release volatile organic compounds (from things like toxic glues, paints and veneers), creating a nasty chemical mix in the home, during the renovation process and for years after.

If you are keen to have a low-VOC reno, start with the f ooring. You might think timber is the way to go over

carpet, but beware. Cheaper hardwood f oors can be topped with veneers and contain glues that are chocker block full of chemical nasties.

While bamboo is a beautiful and sustainable option, many products have been treated with chemicals that are anything but pretty. And you should be wary of recycled timbers – it’s a great idea to recycle but you don’t know whether or not the old timbers have been painted in lead-based products or treated with harsh chemicals.

The best bet is to choose a hardwood f ooring product that comes from a managed forest. Take care

hen dressing your windows you shouldn’t look past the good old fabric curtain. Sure, blinds and shutters are popular contemporary choices, but a well-placed curtain can make a room, and they don’t have to cost a fortune.

Ready-made curtains are a good choice, but if you’re worried about them looking the same as the curtains in everybody else’s homes, take a walk around your local craft or fabric store and choose some trims, ribbons or ties to enhance an otherwise plain product.

If you know your way around a

sewing machine and have decided to make your curtains from scratch, it’s also a good idea to think about how to tie them in with your cushions and other soft furnishings.

Simply having your curtains and cushions in the same fabric is a design no-no, though, so experiment with similar tones or contrasting colours to see what works best.

For large rooms with hard f ooring, buy your curtains extra-long and let them puddle on the f oor.

our outdoor areas have a lot to put up with in the warmer months, but Sunshine Coast renovators can help their lawns and plants get through the upcoming hot summer.

On the lawn, try raising the height of your mowing blade – while the jury is out as to whether or not this actually makes a difference, it is worth a try. Ripping out your lawn and re-turf ng with a tougher variety makes sense – especially if your lawn is old, patchy and always gives you trouble. Of course, if you are renovating you might be laying new turf anyway. Choose a variety that

suits not just our climate but your soil type – sandy coastal soils support different lawns than hinterland soils.

If you haven’t done so already, apply a wetting agent to the soil – even if it does get rain the water is more likely to penetrate if it has a wetting agent to help. And while you are at it give the soil a good aeration – again some soils are so compacted that rain can’t seep into the root systems, making the lawn far more vulnerable during dry summer months.

ou’ve spent months in the planning, watched on eagerly during construction and worked hard to ensure your landscaping and decking is up to scratch for your new pool.

However, that large puddle of water in your backyard might be having a very large and harmful impact on the environment. It’s not only the water it takes to f ll the average backyard pool – about 45,000 litres, no less – but also the ongoing electricity requirements and water top-ups too.

If you’re interested in reducing

your impact and electricity use, there are things you can do.

Consider installing a rainwater tank or stormwater diversion system for your pool’s supply. Fitting a cover will help reduce evaporation – as much as 20,000 litres is lost each year to evaporation.
