From the editor Today is World Suicide Prevention Day that asks us to pause, check in with the people around us and remember the importance of being there for one another. In this issue, journalist Abbey Cannan shares the deeply personal story of Sunshine Coast mum Linda Delamotte and her son Jack, who died by suicide, aged just 25. Out of her devastating loss came Linda’s determination to do something to help others who find themselves in suicidal distress. Her vision is jacks place: a local facility designed to provide a safe, therapeutic space for people who need more support than a GP or counsellor can provide, while also helping the families and friends walking alongside them. Linda describes it as the ‘missing middle’ in mental health care, and her hope is that no other family will find themselves wondering where to turn when someone they love desperately needs somewhere safe. It is an important conversation, and one that feels particularly relevant today. Linda’s message is also a simple one: we don’t need to have all the answers to help someone who is struggling. TOUGHER BAIL LAWS TARGET SERIOUS REPEAT OFFENDERS The Breach Bail, Go to Jail and Other Legislation Amendment Bill is the next phase of the state government’s Adult Crime, Adult Time reforms.
T
he Crisafulli Government has introduced new legislation aimed at strengthening Queensland’s bail laws. The new legislation aims to target adult and youth offenders who commit serious offences while on bail. The Breach Bail, Go to Jail and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2026, introduced to Parliament recently, is the next stage of the state government’s Adult Crime, Adult Time reforms. Under the proposed changes, committing a serious offence while released on bail would become a
standalone offence, carrying a mandatory minimum sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment, to be served wholly in custody. The bill also would introduce a new ‘high degree of confidence’ test for serious offenders – meaning police or a court would have to be satisfied to a high degree of confidence that an offender would not commit another serious offence while on bail before bail could be granted. For young offenders, serious offences would include those covered by Adult Crime, Adult Time. For adults, the definition would also
include coercive control and child sexual offences covered by Daniel’s Law. The reforms would require defendants to show cause as to why their detention is not justified and satisfy police or the court that they would not commit another serious offence while on bail. The government has committed to passing the legislation by the end of the year. Premier David Crisafulli says the reforms represent one of the most significant packages of bail reform ever introduced to the Queensland parliament. “We are expanding Adult Crime, Adult Time to deliver stronger bail laws to make Queensland safer,” Mr Crisafulli says. “We made a promise to take on Labor’s weak bail laws, we listened to Queenslanders and we’re delivering. “These are important reforms the ministers have been working through for some time to deliver the nation-leading stronger bail laws that will restore safety.” Attorney-General, Minister for Justice and Minister for Integrity Deb Frecklington says the reforms will put victims first and target offenders who pose a risk to the community. “Queenslanders have made it clear they want tougher bail laws that put victims first and that’s exactly what the Crisafulli Government is delivering through our Breach Bail, Go to Jail reforms,” she says. “We are also cracking down on offenders who seek to harm children and exploit our most vulnerable, because protecting Queensland kids is not negotiable.” Minister for Youth Justice and Victim Support and Minister for Corrective Services Laura Gerber says the
government is responding to calls for tougher bail laws while also investing in early intervention and rehabilitation. “We will always put the rights of victims ahead of the rights of offenders,” she says. “Alongside our tough laws, we are also delivering more early intervention and rehabilitation programs than ever before to help turn young lives away from crime and prevent the next generation of youth offenders.” Minister for Police and Emergency Services Dan Purdie says the government is delivering more police and stronger laws. “We are delivering the fresh start Queenslanders voted for with more police, stronger laws and fewer victims including tougher bail laws,” he says. Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Amanda Camm says the reforms will strengthen protections for victims of domestic and family violence by including coercive control in the new bail provisions. “Coercive control and domestic and family violence have no place in our society and too many have already lost their lives as a result,” Minister Camm says. “The inclusion of coercive control under the strongest bail reforms in the country reinforces our resolve to improve the lives of Queensland women and children who, all too frequently and tragically, experience harm at the hands of others.” The government says the reforms form part of its broader approach to community safety, alongside increased policing, early intervention and rehabilitation programs. Police data shows victim numbers have fallen by 9.6 per cent.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME AT JACKS PLACE Out of an unbearable tragedy, a Coast family is spearheading the building of a safe, community-based mental health facility aimed at providing wraparound therapeutic support, connection and hope for patients. WORDS: Abbey Cannan.
T
hree days before her 25-year-old son Jack Delamotte died by suicide, Linda Delamotte had a conversation no mother should ever have to have. Jack told her that everything in his brain was telling him to kill himself. But while he knew he needed help, he did not believe the existing system could give him somewhere safe to go. That devastating gap would drive Linda’s vision for jacks place: a Sunshine Coast charity supporting people in suicidal distress who need more help than a GP or counsellor can provide. Now, on World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10, Linda is asking the community to help build that vision, one symbolic brick at a time. Jack grew up on the Coast and attended Mountain Creek School, where he built an extensive network of friends from all corners of the region. For Linda, remembering him means remembering the person he was before the tragedy that changed her family forever. “Jack was a fun-loving character,” she says.

“He sang out loud to music and could be heard from the other end of the house. “He loved fooling around with friends. “He was committed to exercise, with the gym being one of his favourite places. And clean eating. He loved food. “I hope he is remembered as that fun-loving, generous guy, not the one who was broken by an unexplained mental illness or in the tragic way he passed.” Within days of Jack’s death, Linda says she knew something needed to change. “To be very honest, I don’t even know how my brain could have had this vision at the time, because I was barely breathing at his passing,” she says. “I just knew we had to do better.” That vision became jacks place Foundation. Linda says the idea was shaped by what happened to Jack and the difficult choices he faced when he was in suicidal distress. Just days before Jack passed, he said, “Mum, everything in my brain is telling me to kill myself. But I won’t go to SCUH (Sunshine Coast University Hospital) Emergency to wait on the plastic chairs and then be discharged anyway.” Linda says Jack’s experience exposed

what she sees as a critical gap between the public and private mental health systems. “He was speaking from experience, and this is not uncommon where people presenting to emergency don’t meet the criteria for admission,” she says. “And he couldn’t go to a private mental health unit because he couldn’t get a private psychiatrist, and even if he did, he would have to keep his suicidal thoughts to himself. “When he did have a private psychiatrist and they were planning an admission to the private mental health unit, he was told to keep his suicidal thoughts to himself because he won’t be admitted if they know that.” For Linda, the most confronting part was that the people around Jack knew he was at risk, yet there was nowhere she could take him where he could be safe. That experience has shaped what Linda calls the ‘missing middle’. “The missing middle refers to the gap in care between the public and private mental health system. We are not duplicating what either are doing, but filling the gap,” she says. myweeklypreview.com.au

Jack Delamotte, who died in 2022 “Suicide prevention is complex, and so that requires an extensive collaboration not only to develop the care, but to deliver it into the future,” she says. “We want engagement from many areas of our community, and to date we have had very encouraging responses.” That community support is now being channelled into a new fundraising campaign for World Suicide Prevention Day, as well as Mental Health Month in October. Called ‘Building Hope, One Brick at a Time’, the campaign invites people to purchase a symbolic brick for $10 to help support the future of jacks place. “The message is simple: jacks place will be built by all of us,” Linda says. “It gets made out of thousands of small acts – a donation, a business putting its hand up, a trade offering time, someone sharing our story with the people they know. “And every brick stands for someone: a son, a daughter, a partner, a mate, a workmate. Somebody who needed a

safe place to go and couldn’t find one.” The response from the Coast community so far has reinforced Linda’s belief that the need extends far beyond her own family. “The response has been both compassionate and passionate for supporting us to achieve our vision,” she says. “Sadly, so many people in our community have been impacted by suicide in some way, and many have been impacted by the missing middle. “So, they understand all too well why we are doing what we’re doing and why it is so critical.” For Linda, the work remains deeply personal. But the vision is now much bigger than one family’s loss. On World Suicide Prevention Day, she wants people to remember that helping someone does not require perfect words or a perfect solution. “On a day like today, it’s easy to feel like the problem’s too big to do anything about. It isn’t,” she says.

jacks place is being developed as a community-based residential and non-residential model of care, designed to provide intensive therapeutic support, connection and hope before someone reaches a point of crisis. The model will also recognise the needs of the family and friends supporting someone experiencing suicidal distress. “We will be delivering wraparound care specific to each individual,” she says. “What that means is holding them in a safe and therapeutic (not a hospital feel) space and connecting each guest to relevant people and services, according to their circumstances and needs.” The planned facility will be surrounded by nature, with birds, trees and landscaped spaces intended to create a calmer environment. “Our people will be guests, not patients, and they will choose to come to jacks place,” she says. “All feelings are welcome and encouraged to be shared. We will provide a place of hope and safety.” The model will combine health and medical professionals with peer support workers who have their own experience of how difficult life can become. Linda says the approach will also extend beyond the person experiencing suicidal distress. “There is no purpose-built, suicideprevention facility in Australia,” she says. “I want everyone, including friends and family, to feel the calm, safe and hopeful vibes the minute they enter the surrounds.” For families who have spent nights worrying about a loved one, the planned facility is intended to provide somewhere to pause as well as somewhere to receive support. Developing a model for care of this kind is not something Linda believes can happen in isolation. jacks place Foundation is working with specialists and healthcare teams connected with SCUH as it develops its care model and future facility.
“If someone you care about is struggling, you don’t need the right words. “You just need to be there and ask, honestly, how they’re going. “And then stay in the conversation. “And if you’re the one doing it tough right now, please hold on and reach out. “There are a lot of people working hard to make this system better, and you deserve to still be here when it is.” At the heart of jacks place is the hope that no family will again have to face the question Linda and Jack faced, with nowhere to turn. “That’s really what jacks place is about: hope, held safely, until someone can carry it themselves again,” Linda says. ‘PIECE OF AUSTRALIAN ROCK HISTORY’ TO HELP CHARITY Music fans will have the chance to own a piece of Powderfinger history when drummer Jon Coghill’s personal Pearl drum kit goes under the hammer on September 10, with proceeds going to Sunshine Coast youth charity Lookout 07. Coghill played, toured and recorded with the kit during one of Powderfinger’s most successful periods, including on Odyssey Number Five and Vulture Street.
“I got this kit from Pearl and Col Gillies in the late ’90s and toured and recorded with it from about 1999 to 2008,” he says. The kit was also used during Powderfinger and Silverchair’s Across the Great Divide Tour in 2007, with Silverchair drummer Ben Gillies playing it for one or two songs during Powderfinger’s set each night. Describing it as “a beast of a kit”, Coghill says it delivers a “massive clean sound with heaps of bottom end”. The kit will be the first featured lot in Abbeys Auctions’ Premium Vinyl and Music Auction, with all proceeds supporting Lookout 07. Abbeys Auctions director Hugh Farrelly says the kit is a significant item. “This is a genuine piece of Australian rock history,” he says. “It was there for an extraordinary period in Powderfinger’s career – in the studio and on the road – and now fans and collectors have the opportunity to own it.” Coghill is an ambassador for Lookout 07, which helps to support Queenslanders, aged 12-25, through counselling, mentoring and fitness activities. COAST ‘VOICE’ PROGRESSES A Sunshine Coast country singer, Phoebe Rose, 17, has secured a spot on Team Ronan on this year’s The Voice Australia. She first captured the coaches’ attention on the Seven Network’s music program with a moving rendition of Fields of Gold by Eva Cassidy. Following the sudden passing of her father in 2024, Phoebe dedicated her Blind Audition performance to his memory, with Cassidy being one of his favourite artists. Her Blind Audition earned high praise from all four coaches. Ronan Keating said Phoebe “took it to
a place I’ve never heard it go to before”, while Kate Miller-Heidke described the performance as “masterful”. Richard Marx called it a “beautiful performance”, Melanie C was equally impressed, describing Phoebe’s audition as “flawless” and “a voice I want to listen to all day”.
NEW INITIATIVE FUNDS GRANTS The Buderim Foundation has announced the launch of the Sunshine Coast Community Fund: a new, permanent investment fund that will provide grants to community organisations. Chairman Rick Woods says the new fund expands the foundation’s reach alongside the Buderim Community Fund and the Thompson Charitable Fund. “Together, these funds build on more than $10million already invested by the foundation,” he says. “Since our first grants distribution in 2008, we’ve awarded more than

The McDermott Aviation team prepares for the Australian firefighting season
FIREFIGHTING SUPERHEROES READY TO RESPOND ANYWHERE Queensland’s fire season has started and, with temperatures already climbing above 30 degrees, aerial firefighting specialist McDermott Aviation is gearing up for the season ahead. The company’s specialist teams are preparing to deploy 23 aircraft across five states to support emergency services and communities during bushfire events. The deployment comes as fire and
emergency authorities prepare for heightened bushfire risk in several regions across Australia this spring. McDermott Aviation founder and president John McDermott says maintaining a high level of readiness is fundamental to the company’s approach. “Every fire season is different, and our job isn’t to predict what is going to happen,” he says.
“Our job is to be prepared and to make sure we have the people, aircraft and support capability ready when we’re called on. “Our aircraft work alongside the firefighters and emergency services on the ground, helping them contain fires and protect what matters. “Ultimately, this work is about helping keep people and communities safe and protecting homes, property, critical infrastructure, livestock, native wildlife and the environment. “Firefighting has been a major part of what we do at McDermott Aviation for many years and, coming into every season, our focus is on making sure our aircraft and our people are ready to go when they’re needed. “Having 23 aircraft contracted across five states is a significant operation. “But there is a lot more behind that number than the aircraft themselves. NEW STORE HELPS CUT THE PRICE OF EVERYDAY GROCERIES The Everyday Foundation will open the doors to its new Currie Street location in Nambour today, September 10, giving the community a place to shop for affordable groceries. Everyone is invited to the grand opening to enjoy a sausage sizzle from 10am, as well as half-price barista-made coffee today and tomorrow. This multi-million-dollar facility couldn’t come at a better time as cost-ofliving pressures continue to hit hard across the Sunshine Coast. The building will house all The Everyday Foundation’s programs, including its low-cost food outlet which is open to everyone. The outlet stocks a wide variety of products, including pantry staples, meat, toiletries and cleaning products,
snacks, freezer goods, milk and bread. “Whether you’re stretching a pension, feeding a young family or just want to save some money off your weekly shop, our store is open to everyone,” general manager Karen Gullo says. “And once you’ve done your shopping, you can grab a coffee and a treat at Bean, our on-site cafe. “Every dollar spent in store goes back into our food relief programs. “So, it’s good for your wallet and your community.” The building will house the foundation’s meal-support kitchen, emergency relief program, and Christmas hamper initiative. The opening comes on the back of the Zaleta Love Food, Give Food Long Lunch – The Everyday Foundation’s signature fundraising event, which raised an incredible $320,000 in August to support its food relief efforts.
For the first time on the Sunshine Coast, plastic surgeon Dr Chandan Jadhav has performed a total digit transfer for a patient who lost their thumb in a workplace incident. The complex procedure involved transferring the patient’s second toe to reconstruct a functional thumb. The operation took 12 hours. Dr Jadhav, who practises at Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, says the procedure means patients can now access complex reconstructive surgery locally. “Patients had to be sent to Brisbane previously, but we now have the state-ofthe-art facilities on the Sunshine Coast and we can do all these complex reconstructions,” he says. “It was the first surgery of its kind performed on the Sunshine Coast, and it was made possible through the support and collaboration of Ramsay Health Care.” Dr Jadhav says he chose to specialise in plastic surgery because “it is a problemsolving specialty that addresses a diverse range of conditions and patient needs”. “I find great fulfilment in restoring both form and function for my patients, knowing that this can have a meaningful and positive impact on their quality of life,” he says. The patient has begun rehabilitation with hand therapists and occupational
Before (right) and after therapists and is making good progress. “She’s got back all the sensation in the thumb and she’s started to use the thumb, which is basically her toe, now to do most of the activities,” Dr Jadhav says. The patient will need at least six months of rehabilitation. The goal is for a graduated return to work. Dr Jadhav says the procedure is not one he hopes to perform often. “We never want any patient to have a thumb surgery,” he says. “But if they have any kind of accidents and surgeries, we have the expertise and we’re pretty confident to perform them at the Sunshine Coast.” WORDS: Abbey Cannan.

here is some crap on television. No, I may not be talking about Phil Gould this time, but lifestyle shows. It seems there are shows about everything – just to fill in space. Speaking of filling in space, shows on hoarding spring to mind: Hoarders, Hoarders Buried Alive, Hoarders SOS, The Hoarder Next Door, just to name a few. I might have an addition to the list: The Hoarder I Live With. Yes, Old Mate is a hoarder and every time I question her on it, I get the same response: “When you retire, we won’t have to buy anything – we will already have it.” Old Mate proudly comes from a long line of op shoppers who have a nose for a bargain, whether we need it or not. Now, this is the problem: when we decide to declutter an area of our rambling, dusty old house, she takes three bags of stuff to the op shop and comes back with four bags. I must admit, I have been conditioned over four decades with this and only occasionally notice the predicament we are in. But the other day when I was changing the bed linen, I was told that the mattress protector needed washing. Old Mate
informed me there was a new one in a tub in the garage. The expression, “Going down that rabbit hole” sprung to mind. Down we went, and let me tell you it was a bloody big rabbit that made the hole as we went through tubs and tubs of linen – enough to supply Enoggera Army Barracks and there would have still been some left over. Bloody hell. And guess what? While we found everything else, we didn’t find the mattress protector. This ‘Episode 1’ of The Hoarder I Live With got off to a flying start. There were a few arguments, some fairly intensive sighing and deep breathing from yours truly and an eventual trip to Lifeline with a ute full of sheets, pillowcases and other bedding that had never been used and would never be used unless I became suddenly incontinent in a big way. We now have about 20 empty tubs that I am keeping a close eye on (to make sure they stay empty). Episode 2 could be about the wardrobe in the spare room that is actually another pantry full of food and dry goods that were ‘on special’ – so, she bought 10-times more than we need. I reckon this new series might rate pretty well.

ould it be that Generation Z is the ‘sensible generation’? Could it be that the older generations have got it wrong, and Zoomers are emerging as our great hope for a better, balanced and inclusive society? Gen Z came after the Millennials and before Generation Alpha. It is the group the older ones have got in the habit of wringing their hands about, fearing its members are lost, unable to make conversation and ill-equipped to launch from the family nest. But new data also shows there is so much to feel hopeful about as this cohort settles into adulthood. Australian Bureau of Statistics data released last month shows Gen Z – generally accepted as those born between 1997 and 2012 – is not getting married and certainly not having babies. These are pluses: meaning less divorce and fewer unwanted, uncared-for children. The new figures are confirmation that Australia has become truly progressive and our social institutions give individuals the freedom to make decisions for themselves. Gen Z is less hedonistic, consumes less alcohol and is good at delaying gratification. What is not to love about that? Sadly,
perhaps partly because of the ‘Negative Nancy’ messaging we give them, Zoomers are more likely to have mental illness struggles, be sleep deprived and heavily reliant on technology and have shorter attention spans. But Gen Z has a strong sense of responsibility towards people and the planet. Zoomers are environmentally aware, socially conscious and committed to ethical behaviour. They have come of age in a multicultural society and are comfortable engaging with people from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and identities. They want work/life balance and a fair society and are unwilling to accept the idea that Australia’s future must follow past patterns. Critics sometimes dismiss this as political correctness. A more generous interpretation is that it reflects empathy. Gen Z understands that a successful society should work for everyone, not just those who have traditionally held power and privilege. The willingness to challenge unfair norms demonstrates moral conviction. No society was ever advanced by repeating the past. Forward-thinking Gen Z may well be the key to a better future.

REPORTING SEASON HIGHLIGHTS EMERGE Reporting season is complete and the final weeks have reflected the broader trend of the month: most companies delivered results in line with or ahead of expectations. However, outlook statements and guidance have generally disappointed relative to consensus forecasts, with weakness broad based rather than isolated. The disappointing outlook commentary is flowing through to forward estimates, with 61 per cent of companies seeing Financial Year (FY) 2027 earnings downgrades versus 35 per cent receiving upgrades. Cuts have also been more severe, averaging 9 per cent compared with an average upgrade of 5 per cent, resulting in an average reduction of 3.7 per cent based on the companies we tracked. The 12-month forward earnings per share estimate for the ASX 200 has fallen from 9.9 per cent at the end of July to 8.1 per cent, with most sectors experiencing downgrades. Energy and Health Care have led the downgrades, while Technology estimates have risen, perhaps reflecting analyst caution heading into August. Consensus price target changes continue to be modest, with an average revision of 0.7 per cent. Staples, Energy and Health Care have seen the largest upward adjustment to price targets, while Technology, Utilities and Real Estate have seen targets revised lower.
The Australian equity market has largely shrugged off the bad news. However, gains have pared through the month as the outlook commentary painted a softening earnings picture. Qantas delivered a FY26 beat with profit before tax 4 per cent above consensus estimates. Management pointed to several moving parts shaping the outlook, including higher fuel, stronger revenue per available seat kilometre and softer domestic available seat kilometres. An acceleration of the retirement of the A380 fleet, resilient loyalty growth and a clear path to 10 per cent international earnings before interest and taxes margins will rely on solid execution, given consumer and fuel headwinds. Ampol and Viva Energy both delivered solid first-half results, with earnings broadly in line to slightly ahead of expectations. But dividends materially exceeded forecasts, thanks to continued strength in refining margins, which are being supported by geopolitical disruptions, low fuel inventories and elevated refinery utilisation globally. Both companies are expected to benefit from refining margins remaining above long-term averages into 2027. Among the supermarkets, Woolworths delivered the stronger result, continuing to gain market share through improved execution, stronger sales momentum and tighter cost control. Coles’ result was solid but highlighted slowing sales growth, increased capital expenditure and ongoing liquor challenges, leading to modest earnings downgrades. The key test for both retailers will be the second quarter of 2027 as tobacco headwinds fade and food inflation picks up. SEE ANTARCTICA WITHOUT SACRIFICING COMFORT In January, I had the extraordinary privilege of travelling to ‘The White Continent’, aboard Viking Polaris: a ship purposely built for expeditions. Florals are a spring staple but bringing them indoors doesn’t have to mean covering the house in tiny flower prints. This season, look beyond the bloom itself. Petal-like curves, scalloped edges, botanical shapes and loose painterly patterns can all bring a softer feel to an interior.
BALANCE IS KEY When it comes to introducing the spring vibe into your home, remember that colour can be as equally subtle as the floral elements themselves. Think leafy greens, faded lilac, blush, butter yellow and earthy rust. Choose one hero floral or botanical element and give it room to breathe. Against simple furniture and pastel colours, a bold bloom will feel contemporary rather than overly pretty.
SHAPE SHIFT You don’t actually need flowers to get the look. Scalloped cushions, petal-shaped lamps, wavy-edged mirrors and curved furniture all borrow their shapes from nature. CHANGE THE SCALE If traditional floral prints feel too much, consider scale. One oversized bloom, leafy botanical or abstract flower motif can feel much more modern than a collection of small repeating patterns. The same principle works with artwork. QUEENSLAND PROPERTY MARKET ‘TAKES A BREATH’ AFTER YEARS OF RAPID GROWTH REIQ says the ‘buying frenzy’ of recent years is giving way to a ‘more measured marketplace’.

ueensland’s residential property median sale price eased modestly over the June 2026 quarter as buyers, sellers and investors adjust to higher borrowing costs and recent taxation changes. While the state’s extraordinary growth run appears to have paused, annual gains remain firmly in double digits, and most major markets continue to hold their ground. The Real Estate Institute of Queensland’s (REIQ) latest median sales data for the June 2026 quarter (April-June 2026) shows a broad moderation in price growth, with nine of the 16 major house markets recording soft quarterly growth, two remaining stable and five experiencing dips as market conditions become less frenetic than in recent years. Over the quarter, the statewide median house price dipped -0.91 per cent, staying just shy of the $1million mark at $983,000, while still recording annual growth of 16.57 per cent. For units, again the statewide median eased -1.22 per cent over

the quarter to $810,000 but remained 17.29 per cent higher than a year ago. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella says the quarter was characterised by minor movements, relative to Queensland’s exceptional property price growth over recent years which outperformed much of the country. “Queensland’s property market has spent several years operating at full throttle,” Ms Mercorella says.
“So, any return to more regular pace will take a bit of adjustment – especially when it comes to buyers and sellers’ expectations. “It is important to put these results in perspective and not view them through a doom-and-gloom lens. “While the quarterly medians have edged back in some locations, they represent a steadying market. “After years of rapid gains, the market is taking a breath.”

Ms Mercorella says that in a state as vast as Queensland, it was not easy or wise to generalise. “While we talk about the Queensland market as a whole, it’s unrealistic to think you can paint the entire state with the same broad brush: given the sheer size and diversity of Queensland, the markets are much more nuanced,” she says. “Looking at the major house markets within Queensland this quarter, our capital city remains unchanged, Toowoomba continues to forge on quite strongly and we’re still seeing prices rising across most regions, despite the slight dip in statewide figures.” She says feedback from agents suggests market conditions are becoming more measured. “Agents are telling us the buying frenzy is well behind us and we’re seeing the return of a more measured marketplace,” she says. “It’s the kind of market that Queensland operated in for many years before the extraordinary conditions of the past six years.”

Nepal’s latest natural disaster is heartbreaking and the footage is terrifying. I remember going on a two-month trek through the Himalayas 30 years ago in search of some meaning in life. After hiking what seemed vertical mountains for weeks, I got to about 5500m and sat on the edge of a cliff overlooking those amazing mountains. I sat there thinking, “Inspiration will come to me now for sure” ... nothing!
