the organised home When the world feels chaotic, there’s nothing better than coming home to a calm, organised house. Where do you start? Let’s go room by room.

THE KITCHEN It’s the heart of every home, a place where we cook and eat, do homework and chat, entertain and gather. If you’re renovating, not only will you have to decide on tiles and cabinets, floors and appliances, but also kitchen layout. Function is just as important as form in this room. Here are some tips to creating an organised kitchen: • If you’re planning a new kitchen or large renovation, consider adding drawers rather than cupboards – drawers are often a better use of space and are great for storing not just cutlery and utensils but also glasses and cups, bowls and plates, spices, jars and containers of food. • When storing food, use clear glass or plastic containers to make it easier to see what you’ve got. In the pantry, round jars are lovely, but square and rectangular storage jars and containers fit together better and are a more efficient use of space. • Hang pots and pans rather than storing them in a cupboard. • Invest in drawer dividers, a magnetic strip you can attach to the wall for knives and cutlery trays. • If you use lots of flour or eat rice every day, store these dry ingredients in storage bins built into your drawers. • If you have a lot of baking trays and cake tins, tray dividers will help keep those neat. • Use hanging bars and hooks in the kitchen for pots and pans, large utensils and tea towels.

Any designer will tell you to avoid corner cupboards in the kitchen – all that dead space! But most L or U-shape kitchens will have at least one corner cupboard. Luckily there are loads of clever storage solutions for this otherwise dead space, such as carousels or door-mounted baskets.

THE BATHROOM Who knew humans needed so many soaps and lotions, ointments and accessories? No matter how much bathroom storage you have, no doubt you wish you had more. The first step to organising the bathroom is to have a clean out and get rid of those nearly empty bottles and medications that are out of date. Then lay out everything else and divide them into items you use every day, those you use occasionally and then those that you rarely need. Those items you use every day should be close by the sink, but if you don’t want to clutter your vanity, consider how to store them – the good-old medicine cabinet is great for everyday items. It doesn’t take up much space but can hold a lot. Consider attractive baskets, glass canisters or timber boxes to store toothpaste and makeup. If you have drawers, use dividers and small boxes and containers to keep everything neat. Consider other spots where you can squeeze in

more storage – a cupboard above the toilet for toilet paper, hair accessories and handtowels, a hanging basket by the bath for bath toys or shampoo, or hooks mounted by the cupboard to hang your hairdryer. Go online and read magazines to get inspiration – there are some homeowners and designers out there who have created some very clever bathroom storage solutions.

If space is really tight in the bathroom, look out how you can use the space under the sink better. Many cabinet makers can create a drawer under the sink, with a U-shape cut out for the plumbing. This is a great spot for smaller items.

THE LAUNDRY It’s not a room where most of us want to spend too much time, so the laundry can too often become the dumping ground for items that can’t find a home anywhere else in the house. Good storage is vital in this room. Have a good look at how you can get most out of this space. Add shelving above the washing machine and dryer for washing powders and cleaning products. Install hooks for towels, swimwear and rain jackets on the wall. Shoe racks are always handy, and of course, plenty of cupboards and drawers for towels, continued over> linens and bedding.

tip Use magazine folders not just for paperwork and magazines – in the bathroom they can hold your hot tools and brushes. In the bedroom cupboard they can hold belts and accessories.

THE BEDROOM Got unused space under the bed? Repurpose old drawers as under-bed storage – just add some wheels to make them easier to access and away you go. Put up a peg board or corkboard and hang jewellery and small accessories that you wear often on it. In the wardrobe, pull out all your clothes and consider how much hanging space as opposed to how many drawers you need, then reconfigure your wardrobe to maximise space. Finding a home for accessories can be a challenge, but drawer organisers are great for these, as well as underwear, socks, belts and jewellery. If you have a lot of shelving, use baskets and containers to separate t-shirts and shorts. A wire paperwork organiser can come in handy for better storing clutches and small handbags. And finally, don’t fold but roll – rolled clothes take up less space.

THE GARAGE If your car can’t fit in your garage anymore, it’s time to get organised. Here’s how: • Pull everything out of your garage and organise those items into categories – tools, gardening bits and pieces, toys, sporting equipment and old items you can’t throw out. • Now look at your empty garage and start considering storage options. What storage products do you need to help store items away? Then make a shopping list. • Stock up on containers or boxes and label them so you know exactly what is in each box. Store items you don’t need on high shelves. • Install some shelving or racks for tools, gardening equipment, cleaners and sprays – be sure to put more toxic materials up high.

OUTSIDE • If you have a pool, a pool shed or large storage box will keep pool accessories tidy.

• Hanging items on the wall gets them up and out of the way. Can you hang bikes, rakes and garden tools, golf bags and surfboards?

• Keep a storage box by your outdoor lounge for things like cushions and blankets, mozzie spray and sunscreen.

• Bookshelves aren’t just handy for books – in the garage a bookshelf can hold lots of items and cubes or baskets will keep everything contained.

• If your hose is always snaking across the backyard, invest in a new hose reel.

tip Think about how you can use unused space by the front and back door and hallways. Consider installing hooks and small shelves to hang and store jackets and bags, hats and umbrellas.

• Keep baskets by the back door where you can store old shoes and thongs. • If you’re a keen gardener, keep tools, potting mix and fertilisers in a small garden shed. • Buy a cover for your barbecue – it’ll protect your barbie from the weather and make it more visually appealing when it’s not in use. Also invest in a small cart where you can keep barbecue tools and condiments.

As soon as you start planning your renovation, chat with your neighbours about what you are doing, and consult them regularly throughout the process. If there is going to be a lot of noise on a particular day, let them know the day before. Our homes are our sanctuaries and biggest investments and when a homeowner is renovating, it will affect their neighbours’ enjoyment of their homes. Keeping neighbours in the loop and even asking their opinion shows respect and keeps them invested in the work you are doing. Who knows, they night even offer to help out.

If your home is older, accept the fact that you’ll encounter unexpected issues such as asbestos, rusted pipes or faulty wiring. If you don’t come across these issues, that’s a bonus!

Don’t underestimate how much rubbish a renovation generates. Budget for a skip bin – you will fill it!

Treat your tradies with respect – be friendly but not in their faces. The occasional cuppa and slice of cake doesn’t go astray. Pay them on time and they will do the right thing by you.

Don’t use the household vacuum cleaner to clean up renovation dust – you’ll kill it. Buy or rent a vacuum cleaner designed for cleaning up worksites.

Store away paints and excess materials such as tiles after your renovation. That way you’ll have them for touch-ups and quick fixes in the future.

The kitchen is the heart of the home, so this is where most of your investment budget should go. But don’t go overboard and overinvest in here – many experts recommend spending no more than three to five per cent of your property’s value on a kitchen reno. Otherwise, you’re overcapitalising.

To improve the look of the whole home, replace the flooring. Vinyl planks look great and are pretty hardwearing, and many renovators find that installing these planks is a manageable DIY job.

If you are doing your own paint job, remember this professional tip – invest in a quality brush. No matter how good your paint is, if you’re applying it with a cheap brush the result will look streaky. Quality brushes hold more paint and give a smoother finish.

COLOURED CABINETRY Home renovators are starting to embrace bolder colours in the kitchen, and coloured cabinetry is really emerging as a serious design trend. With a range of colours and quality products to choose from, it’s not so left-of-centre for renovators to add a bit of colour in the kitchen with their cabinets. This kitchen by Laminex is a great example of how bold use of colour can work beautifully in a kitchen. We love the deep-blue tones of Laminex French Navy on these cabinet doors and panels.

Designing a kitchen from scratch and want to ensure the colour scheme works? Here are some tips: 1. Start with your chosen product and work from there. Let’s say you have your heart set a particular stone for the top and splashback. Use this element as the basis of your design. 2. Next, choose the cabinetry colour and profile that will complement your stone. For example, if your benchtop has a grey undertone or a grey fleck or vein, choose cabinetry with a grey undertone – it could be white, coloured or dark. You can choose colours that are very similar for a more harmonious feel, or that are quite different, for more contrast. Just make sure the undertone is the same as this will help tie the benchtop in with the cabinets. 3. Generally the benchtop or cabinetry are the focal points of a kitchen, so choose a practical, hardwearing flooring. If your cabinets and tops are quite striking, go for a more neutral floor. If your cabinets and floor are more neutral, you can play around with a more interesting flooring. 4. When choosing your accessories, this is a chance to get a contrasting colour in. For example, brass or gold taps, handles and lighting will pop against more neutral cabinets. If you want your cabinetry and benchtops to shine, choose accessories that are more understated. With so many elements to consider, designing your dream kitchen can seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be if you stick to these basic rules, and take advantage of samples – bring them into the space to see how the colours and textures work in the room with each other.

DOWN ON THE FARM TIP Designing your dream kitchen? If you are gutting your old kitchen and starting from scratch, it’s a good idea to design your new space with existing electricity points and plumbing lines in mind. Moving electricity and plumbing will chew into your budget, so if you work with what’s already there, you’ll have more money to spend on beautiful cabinetry and benchtops, striking lighting and modern appliances.

Who doesn’t love a farmhouse sink? They look great, suit all styles of kitchen and, well, they just look great. But here are a few things to consider: • White porcelain sinks stain more easily than stainless steel, so be prepared to clean your sink more regularly. They are also more prone to chipping, so be delicate with heavy pots and pans around your sink. • Given these sinks are often deeper that other sink styles, dishes and glasses have a bigger fall, so many homeowners discover they have more accidental breaks with farmhouse sinks. Again, just be a bit more careful. • Most people think of the porcelain variety when they think of a farmhouse sink but these sinks also come in other materials – such as copper or stainless steel. • Farmhouse sinks tend to be deeper and/or wider than standard stainless steel sinks, so keep this in mind if you’re working with existing cabinetry.

Last week I went to visit a lovely new client to have a chat and provide her some advice on a tricky courtyard area at her residence. Christine’s house was absolutely stunning, with a beautiful lap pool and furniture and finishes to match. Her courtyard, however, was her number one headache. There had been a hedge of bamboo planted to screen the neighbours years ago and it had established itself so well that it was very hard to remove. Christine has had the bamboo removed, however, it was impossible to pull out its fibrous base and root zones. What was left in the courtyard was a beautiful pandanus tree with a perimeter of damaged fencing, bamboo bases and lots of pot plants. It was overcrowded and looking very drab. Fortunately, Christine and I had a great consultation and came up with two options for the area. Both options started off with the same base works. The fence needed to be repaired and repainted to match the house and any rotten deck areas or dying plants needed to be

removed. Next, all of the pots and water features needed to be cleared out so that the courtyard could start with a new clear base of a refreshed perimeter fence and the feature pandanus tree retained in the middle. The first option was to build raised timber planter boxes along the walls on top of the bamboo bases. These planter boxes could be filled with new soil, and new tropical plants such as gingers or heliconias could be planted to soften in the wall behind. I gave Christine permission to choose one of her existing water features to use in the courtyard and then to pocket plant a small selection of the pot plants that she had, in the ground under the pandanus tree. Then some beautiful course hoop pine mulch curls could be installed under the tree and around the plants to finish the job. This option provided a way to plant over the bamboo roots while simplifying the small space and making it seem larger and less cluttered. The second option was one without building works, which would be more costeffective. Building upon the coastal theme of the home and the feature pandanus tree, the second option featured using mounds of tumbled sandstone rocks in differing sizes along the edges and over the top of the root balls. A selection of Christine’s feature pots could then be placed in clustered groups along the fence

line with feature planting to soften the fence behind. The balance of the ground under the pandanus can be mulched with the same course hoop pine curls as in option one and sparse shade-tolerant interplanting could still be used under the pandanus tree. A water feature could still also be installed on a level pad of the sandstone spalls. This little courtyard was a prime example of how one small part of a beautiful home can either make or break the property. It also shows that there is often more than one solution to a problem. We wish Christine the best of luck with her courtyard renovation and look forward to seeing the end result soon.

QUESTION: DO I NEED TO USE A PRIMER? Answer: Always use a primer on a surface (whether that’s a wall, trim, furniture or other material) that has never been painted before. If you’re repainting, you should also use a primer on a surface that has become porous, or is so worn that it has an uneven finish.

COLOUR BASICS Having trouble choosing your paint colour? According to the experts at Dulux, colour isn’t that complicated, and once you know the basics, creating a palette that works in your home is easy. Understanding the following will help get you on your way to choosing colours with confidence: • Temperature: Colours are divided into two groups – warm and cool, and these affect the

mood of a room. Warm colours such as red, yellow and orange draw attention to a space, while cool colours such as blue and green are softer on the eye and make a space feel larger. • Tone: This refers to a colour’s lightness or darkness (adding black to a colour darkens it, adding white makes it a lighter tone). Light tones make a space feel airy while darker tones add sophistication and moodiness to a room. • Hue: This refers to whether a colour is primary (red, blue and yellow), secondary (a mix of two primary colours) or tertiary (a combination of primary and secondary colours). • Lighting: Natural and artificial light change the way a colour looks in a room. Cool whites and neutrals suit rooms that have loads of natural light and big windows. Rooms that are darker or on the side of the house that gets less natural light are best painted with warmer whites.

TIPS • Nervous about colour? When you’ve got your colours chosen from your colour card, go for a shade lighter – when you paint the colour on the wall from the sample pot, sometimes it will look darker than the swatch. • Don’t be stingy with sample pots – get lots of samples and take your time deciding which colours look best. • Don’t use the pot to paint a wall; instead, paint a board and hang it on the wall and move it around the room to see how the colour looks against the other elements in a space.
