DON’T MOVE - RENOVATE!
don’t know about you, but I have already pulled out the heavier quilt and knitted throw at home, and winter has only just begun! If the past week or two is anything to go by, it feels as though it’s going to be a cold winter. Keeping toasty at home is one of the joys of modern design. Traditionally, Australian homes are known for low standards of minimum thermal performance. Experts predict that mandatory compliance checks and standards will be revised in coming years, but until then it’s important for homeowners to understand the importance of home heating. This month, we speak with the team from consumer advocacy group Choice and bust some myths and provide tips about keeping warm through winter, and keeping a close eye on energy consumption as you do. The story is on page six. In our outdoor section, we chat with the QBCC about decking and the best way to maintain timber through winter. Until next month, happy renovating.

heating It pays to be clever with heating this winter. Whether you’re buying a new system or sticking with an old one, there are a few ways to save money, and be sustainable. Heating expert Chris Barnes, from consumer advocacy group Choice, reveals the common mistakes we make when it comes to staying warm.
“Insulation is essential for keeping your home warm in winter. good insulation in the home will not only reduce your electricity bills substantially, but will also cut down on greenhouse gas emissions”
MAINTENANCE Regularly cleaning your airconditioner or heater means better energy efficiency and lower running costs. Machines have to work harder when dust filters are clogged.
EXPENSIVE ISN’T ALWAYS BEST Choice’s product testing often reveals retail price isn’t the best indicator of performance. So splashing cash on a high-end heater or air-con without doing your research could still leave you out in the cold. The experts tested some heater models costing in the $400 to $500 range that they’d happily recommend. But, they also found budget heaters for under $100 that were better than models costing hundreds of dollars more. So, don’t assume that just because a heater is expensive or from a well-known brand that it’s going to give you the best value for money. You can check out the product review at choice.com.au/home-and-living/heating/electricheaters/review-and-compare/electric-heaters
INSULATION Insulation is a no-brainer – especially as 25–35 per cent of an uninsulated home’s warmth is lost through the roof in winter. “Average households that install wall, floor and ceiling insulation can save hundreds of dollars on energy bills each year,” Chris says.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR FAN? If you’re wondering whether you should be using an electric heater or your air-conditioning to warm your home this winter, Choice experts say that reverse-cycle air-cons are more efficient and can save you money in the long run. Keep in mind that the cost of using this to heat your home can range from $113 for a small unit up to $335 for a large one (based on an estimated 500 hours of use and an electricity price of 30c/kWh). For optimal warmth – at the cheapest price – stick to a difference of about 8°C between the temperature on your reverse-cycle air-conditioner and the outside temperature. TIP: each degree warmer usually adds about 10 per cent to the running cost of your air-conditioner.
COSTS Don’t just look at the price tag when you buy. Choice testing reveals heaters can have significantly different running costs. Analysing more than 40 electric models, the experts found heater running costs for winter can vary from $193 to $368, depending on the brand and design of heater (based on an estimated 500 hours of use and an electricity price of 30c/kWh).

DESIGN PRINCIPLES When planning for your home renovation, consult architects about passive design principles (design that uses climate to its advantage) to reduce the need for heating and cooling. According to the government’s environmentally sustainable home advice website, yourhome.gov.au, little energy is needed to make a house comfortable. Insulation, a draught-proofed building and passive solar design will make a difference. Your Home recommends insulating the roof, walls and floor. You can also zone your home to only heat the rooms you are using. What heating is best? • In larger rooms with high ceilings, a combination of radiant and convective heating is best. • In small rooms, space convective heating is effective. • In larger draughty rooms or bathrooms, radiant heating works best.

HOME OFFICE MAKEOVER
With most of us spending more time working from home than ever before, there has never been a better time to show your workspace some love. Dulux colour and communications manager Andrea Lucena-Orr says a study should be a calm space and somewhere you enjoy spending time. Dulux worked with stylist Julia Green to give a study area three different looks using colours from the Dulux Colour Forecast 2021.
LOOK 1 For the first look, Ms Green took her cues from the Reset palette by Dulux and painted the walls a soft grey-mauve, Wash&Wear in Aura; and the ceiling a warm white, Ceiling White in Natural White, combined with pink clay and splashes of terracotta in artwork and accessories. “There’s an eclectic feel to this palette, so we had fun mixing old and new – a graphic, contemporary artwork and a modern lamp sit alongside a traditional patterned rug and a rustic style desk with trestle legs. A scheme like this calls for natural textures so bring in touches of timber, leather and wool.” IMAGE: DULUX AUSTRALIA COLOUR FORECAST 2021. STYLIST: JULIA GREEN. PHOTOGRAPHER: ARMELLE HABIB. LOOK 2 When it came to the second scheme, calming colours from the Retreat palette were called on. The back wall was turned into a feature by painting it a rich, oceanic blue with Wash&Wear in Five Fingers Peninsula, paired with a Whisper White on the ceiling. “Bold colour contrasts generally energise a room, but there’s a lovely muddiness to this blue that makes it feel tranquil and relaxed. It’s a classic scheme that would work beautifully in a traditional or contemporary home,” Ms Green says. The look was completed with a traditional writing bureau in a beautiful dark timber, artwork and a zebra print rug.
LOOK 3 For the third scheme, Ms Green layered earthy neutrals from the Nourish palette for warmth and comfort. She opted for Wash&Wear in Morocco Tan on the walls and Ceiling White in White Exchange Half on the ceiling, combined with tonal shades of tan and clay in the artwork, rug and furniture. Woven detailing in the rattan screen and desk chair add texture. “Layering similar tones like we’ve done here creates a nurturing, comforting feel – you could imagine happily working here for long stretches.” IMAGE: DULUX AUSTRALIA COLOUR FORECAST 2021. STYLIST: JULIA GREEN. PHOTOGRAPHER: ARMELLE HABIB. Joshua Tree Flowers print. Available via Greenhouse Interiors.

STYLING TIPS Set the mood: Warm tones will create a cosy, nurturing feel (great for a teen study), while brighter hues are energising and inspiring – ideal for creative thinking. Personalise: Family photographs and mementos from your travels can add character to your study and make it feel more welcoming. Opt for quality: A comfortable and supportive office chair and an adjustable desk lamp that allows you to see what you’re typing or writing are must-haves for a home office. Greenery: Add plants or fresh flowers to purify the air and provide a connection to nature.

laundry No matter your budget, there are plenty of ways to update your laundry. Here are five ideas to get you started.
CREATE SPACE You can never have too much storage, especially when it comes to a laundry room. During the design process be sure to allocate bench space for folding clothes. Also, don’t forget to take into account how much space is allowed for cupboards and incorporate shelving in creative ways. Baskets are great for organisation, and look great on display too.
PRODUCT ALERT Not your average laundry tub – the Caroma Compass 45-litre Flushline tub boasts contemporary style and clean lines. The Compass collection includes products for your kitchen and alfresco space too, which means you can create a seamless look right through the home. Visit caroma.com.au for local stockists.

TILE IT Updating the tile splashback – or adding one if your laundry doesn’t have a splashback – is a great way to modernise the room. Choose tiles in a neutral colour to ensure they don’t date. You can add colour through paint and décor accents. We love the mosaic pattern in this contemporary laundry.

DIY A splash of paint can go a long way in modernising any room. Traditionally, the laundry is neutral in colour. While we agree with sticking with a clean palette for flooring and tiling, don’t be afraid to add a touch of colour. You can do this by painting your cabinetry or including a feature wall.

THE HARD YARDS If you are investing in a full bathroom renovation, you will have to contend with stripping out the existing fittings. Following on from the planning process, the bathroom strip out is one of the most important steps in the project.
PREPARATION Make sure you have quality protective materials including gloves, appropriate footwear, earmuffs, protective glasses and face masks. It is also a good idea to hire a skip bin to ensure all materials are safely and efficiently removed from site. KEY POINTS Time – Expect this DIY job to take between two to three days to complete, especially if you are removing the tiling yourself. Safety – Unless you are licensed, you will need to source professionals to take care of any plumping and electrical components of the strip out project. Cost – According to online tradie platform hipages, the associated costs will come down to the scale of the job. Structural work such as the removal of internal walls will increase the cost, as will moving plumbing features or replacing tiles. The experts at hipages place the cost of a mid-range full renovation between $15,000-$25,000.
STEP 1 The first step in preparing the bathroom for a renovation is to engage licensed experts to correctly disconnect the electricity and plumping fixtures. They will also need to cap the plumbing outlets and close off drains.

tip You can save significant money by taking a DIY approach to stripping out and preparing the bathroom for renovation.
STEP 2 Empty the toilet and disassemble it in pieces. You can then move on to the vanity, bath tub and any other fixtures that you aren’t keeping. Tip: If you are retaining the tub, protect it by covering it with a piece of timber or board.
STEP 3 This is where you can get to work by removing all wall tiles. Start in the shower and be sure to remove any dry wall and insulation panels safely. It may sound fun to jack hammer the tiles from the walls, but removal will depend on how the tiles are fixed to the wall – on a rendered surface or sheeted wall. Be sure to do your research first. Following on from the walls, you can begin on the floors. On completion, give the entire bathroom a good clean and vacuum. Be sure to sweep up any leftover debris.

LET THE LIGHT IN Installing an extra window can improve your views, provide more flexibility for room layout, improve ventilation and add more light. Here’s some advice from Sunshine Mitre 10.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TIMBER • 90 x 45mm or 65 x 35mm structural radiata pine or hardwood to match existing frame, header to suit opening span (check span tables), architrave to match existing internal trim, 65 x 19mm (or larger if required) treated pine or other durable timber for external trim
tip You will generally need to get approval from your local council before installing a window in an external wall.
HARDWARE • Window to suit opening, 75mm x 8G pack of screws, 1 roll of aluminium flashing (width of wall frame plus at least 25mm), 50 x 1.6mm pack bullet head nails, pack of 25mm galvanised clouts, 75 x 2.5mm nails, 50 x 1.6mm nails, 10mm packers, window lock OTHER MATERIALS • Wood stain, clear satin polyurethane, wood putty, paint, gap filler and/or sealant, spackle
Step 1: Structural issues In the wall frame above all windows and doors there is a strong beam called a header, which carries the weight of the structure above,. Span tables are available at your local Mitre 10 and will tell you the size and strength of header required. You’ll need to know a few details: roof type (tiled or metal), truss or rafter spacing, roof span, upper or lower storey, and window opening size. If your house has asbestos cladding do not cut it. Contact a licensed asbestos removal contractor for advice. Step 2: Order your window Try to match your new window to the existing ones. This may be tricky for very old windows, but recycling centres will often have old windows in good condition. Windows are available in both standard sizes and made-to-order. Step 3: Cut the wall and frame the opening Use a stud finder to locate the position of the wall studs and any power, water or gas lines. If there are any services in the way, contact a licensed contractor to have them repositioned. Try to position the window so that you minimise the number of studs removed from the wall.

Mark out the position of the new window on the inside of the wall. Use the existing windows as a guide to the height. Allow 10 to 15 millimetre clearance all around between the window and the opening. You’ll need this to pack the window so that it’s perfectly level and plumb. Cut the plasterboard with a keyhole saw and remove it. Leave the exterior cladding in place until you are ready to install the window. Remove any studs that are in the way. For wide windows you will need to take the weight of the structure on props until the header is installed. You can use timber and wedges, or hire adjustable props. Cut through the studs at the bottom of the window opening with a reciprocating saw. Insert the saw 45 millimetres below the opening in the plasterboard and cut through. This will provide room for the windowsill trimmer. The slot in the plasterboard will be concealed by the architraves or may be spackled. Check the span tables for windowsill trimmer sizes, as large openings may require larger or multiple trimmers. Cut through the studs at the top in the same way, allowing enough space above the opening for your header. Fix the header into place using screws. The screws will have to be angled and you can do this right through the plasterboard and spackle them later. Fix additional studs tightly under the header at each end to support it if there’s enough room. Screw-fix the window trimmer into position at the bottom of the opening, then fit trimming studs at
the sides to complete the frame if necessary. At every step use a spirit level to make sure each part is level. Next, cut the opening in the external cladding. Use a long drill bit from the inside to accurately drill at each corner of the opening. Use a straight edge outside to mark the opening on the cladding, then cut it with a reciprocating saw. Step 4: Install the window Install flashing at the bottom of the opening. Bend so that it fits neatly in the opening and overhangs outside by about 15 millimetres. Remove sliding sashes from the window or open double-hung sashes. Pre-start the 2.5 millimetre nails in the window reveal, then place packers on the flashing and position window from the outside. Align the outside face of the window with the cladding and partly drive in the fixing nails to hold the window while you check it for fit. Check that the internal reveal aligns with the wall lining, and cut to fit. Place packers above the nails in the reveal and drive the nails home. Do not nail the window into the header or through the flashing. Step 5: Finishing Cut and fix architraves around the window reveal and fix with the 1.6 millimetre nails. Seal between the cladding and window with a good quality exterior sealant, except at the bottom, where the flashing has to drain. Fill holes in the plasterboard with spackle and any holes in the cladding with exterior filler, and then paint as required.

EXPERT ADVICE //
FLOORING OPTIONS design dream With Cassandra Fenaughty Cassandra Fenaughty is a landscape architect with more than 20 years’ experience. She is the founder and owner of an innovative renovation design consultancy, creating photo-real renovation concepts for clients looking to visualise their dream renovation before it begins. For more visit cassandrafenaughty.com.
Our home is 15 years young and has white tiles throughout, along with a lovely deep camel colour carpet. As its time for an update I’d like to ask your opinion on white tiles meets vinyl floorboards. We have many tiles throughout our fourbedroom home. In the kids’ area there are three bedrooms and an activity room. We are thinking of pulling up the existing carpet and tiles and replacing with a light colour wooden floorboard vinyl. We would like your thoughts on tiles meets vinyl floorboards. Do you think they go together or would it clash? The activity room has a perimeter of white tiles and a large carpet square in the middle of the room. You would still see a hallway of white tiles and as you enter the doorway to each bedroom, and the activity room, the flooring would change. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Kym
CASSANDRA SAYS: Thanks for your query. Flooring questions are always common in my renovation consultations and designs. I’s always hard for clients to know where to start and stop new finishes and how to tie in new and existing
floor coverings. Luckily for you it sounds like your existing white tiles are in good enough condition to retain, and are a neutral colour that will match with other finishes. Given that it is only the three bedrooms and an activity area that need reflooring, a different finish in these areas will look fine, as

long as these areas are all the same. Many people opt to remove carpet from their homes to make cleaning easier. A timber-style finish will look warm and work well with a white tile. It might even be softer and warmer underfoot than tiles in the bedrooms, depending on what timber style you choose. Carpet is always the warmest underfoot in the colder months, but a nice rug on the floor by the beds, or in the playroom over a harder floor, will provide softness and warmth where it is really needed. If you choose a timber colour that complements your furnishings the whole interior palette will tie in nicely. You may want to consider removing the tiled border in the activity room as it will retain the style of the age of the home and possibly make it look a little dated. When choosing your timber-style flooring product it’s good to be aware of possible health issues that may arise from some options. Many flooring products contain VOCs (volatile organic compounds). These are chemicals that have high vapour pressure at room temperature. The molecules from the products can evaporate into the air which we breathe (we often refer to them as fumes). The new car smell or scent of a freshly painted room is the smell of off-gassing of the VOCs in the paint, adhesives, vinyl or plastic.
they would be one of the healthiest options. • Synthetic carpets can be a source for VOCs but natural wool or fibres without treatments for flame retardants, mothproofing, and stain repellents are a healthy option. There is a great website that provides environmental and health pros and cons of all sorts of building materials. Feel free to check it all out and when you are shopping around for your flooring product make sure you ask the supplier about their low- or no-VOC flooring options. Visit ecospecifier.com.au
Health issues linked to VOCs can range from eye, nose and throat irritation to headaches and nausea, and in extreme cases damage to organs and the central nervous system. Low or no VOC options are available in the market. Here are a few facts: • While natural timber is the best option, the finish on the timber needs to be carefully considered.
• Laminate floors typically have more VOCs than other floorings due to the adhesives/glues in the manufacturing process. • Engineered wood or hybrids use a similar process to laminates. They can also off-gas for months. • Vinyl can off-gas chemical compounds for years. • Timber-look tiles are worth considering. While they might be hard and cold for a bedroom,

AVOID DECK DISASTER Rotting timber, fungus growth, corroding screws, warped bracing, cracked posts and split planks are just some of the dangers found by building inspectors on some of Queensland’s worst decks. The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) warns homeowners not to be complacent about deck health. And QBCC commissioner Brett Bassett says having a decay-free deck will reduce the risk of any unwanted disasters in the home. “Deck safety should always be on your mind before hosting friends and family for the quintessential Queensland barbecue which has become a staple social event,” Mr Bassett says. “Decks, balconies, balustrades, stairs and handrails all require regular and effective maintenance to help ensure their long-term safety. “We always recommend using a
QBCC-licensed contractor to carry out any renovation or repair work on your deck or balcony, but before calling someone, it pays to give your deck a regular visual inspection.” The QBCC recommends homeowners conduct regular checks on their decks and balustrades to keep a close eye on potential failings or maintenance issues. Mr Bassett says that fixings, bracings, posts, bearers and joists are the key areas that need to be checked and maintained. “We recommend a visual inspection at least every 12 months, however the frequency of any maintenance depends on the materials, type of finish, climate and the degree of exposure to the weather,” he says. Homeowners can find a licensed contractor using the QBCC’s free online licensee search or by calling 139 333. Visit qbcc.qld.gov.au

Protect you deck fixings against the Sunshine Coast’s salty air by investing in products that can be applied to prevent early rust. Talk to the experts at your local hardware store for advice.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Here are the key areas to look at when undertaking a deck check. Source: QBCC. Fixings Fixings, including post brackets, should be free from rust, bending or fractures. Rust may occur more rapidly if you live in a coastal region, although there are products that can be applied to metal fixings or components to
slow or prevent this process. For a weather-exposed deck or balcony, all fixings such as nuts, bolts, screws and nails should be metal with non-corroding properties. In most cases, hot-dipped galvanised fasteners should be used. However, in some highly-corrosive coastal atmospheres, stainless steel fixings will be needed. Bracing Bracing is often used to support a deck or balcony, helping prevent it from moving under load. continued over>

OUTDOOR // <from previous page Decks and balconies can come under considerable stress from swaying or twisting. It is important to inspect any bracing of a deck or balcony to ensure there has not been any excessive structural movement. If bracing fails, there is a significant risk of harm being caused to people and property.
the decking. To maintain the integrity of the decking, it is vital for bearers and joists to be in good condition and free from defects, such as warping, cracking and decay. Ledgers or pole plates Decks and balconies are often attached to the main external walls of the house or other structure, such as a pool, by supporting joists or bearers off ledgers or pole plates. Ledgers and pole plates must have adequate structural connections to their supporting structure, which may mean connecting them through the external wall cladding to the structural frame of the house. While it is common for brick veneer houses with a deck to just use a masonry fastener (expanding anchor) to connect the ledger or pole plate, this is not usually an acceptable or structurally adequate connection.
Posts Deterioration and subsequent failure of posts can result in death or serious injury to people and damage to property. Timber should be treated appropriately if in the ground or be of a species that will not degrade in soil. Check timber posts for decay where bearers and other timbers are in contact with posts. Signs of decay include a fungus-type growth on the timber, timber becoming spongy and fibrous, and failure of the timber. Steel posts in the ground should be checked for signs of rust and deterioration as water can pool around these areas. Check for: • Warped, cracked or damaged bracing elements • Fixings that are coming loose or deteriorating • Cracked or rusted welds.
Decking boards Decking boards are the direct link between inhabitants and the structure, and timber boards should be regularly inspected for decay. Signs of decay include a fungus-type growth on the timber, timber becoming spongy and fibrous, and failure of the timber. Using a screwdriver or chisel to poke suspect timber can assist in identifying decay.

HOW DO I COAT A DECK IN COLD WEATHER? Leading woodcare product company Cabot’s Timber Finishes recommend continuing to protect deck timber through the winter months. But, when is the best time to re-coat? If the wood is too hot, the stain will dry too quickly and look patchy; if the wood is too cold, the deck could start to have a milky or wrinkled appearance as moisture is trapped under the coating. Here is what you need to know… 1. Don’t coat wood with a surface temperature of less than 10 degrees Celsius. Tip: timber can often be cooler than the external temperature. 2. Choose a water-based product. These dry faster than solvent-based products, and are
more robust when applied in cooler temperatures.

3. Always apply product in the direction of the grain to ensure a smooth finish. In cooler temperatures, ensure you’re not applying too much product. This can start to look milky and cause re-coating issues. Don’t overwork the product on the timber. 4. If you’re painting interior timber, warm the room to above 18 degrees to help in the drying process and avoid a milky finish. Visit cabots.com.au for more tips, and local product stockists.
