DIY: Cleaning your blinds Venetian blinds are a popular covering for bathrooms, toilets and laundries due to their moisture-resistant properties, which enables easy cleaning, while still providing privacy and light control.

The expert team at Choices Flooring suggest the following steps for cleaning aluminium venetian blinds.

1. Start by tilting the slats in the upwards position and grab either a feather duster or a dry cloth and run the cloth or duster across the slats. Repeat this process and tilt the slats into the downward position.

2. Once you have dusted off the

slats, fill up a bucket with fresh water and dampen a clean cloth. Again, tilt the slats into the upward position and working left to right, starting from the top, clean each slat individually.

3. Repeat this process and tilt the slats into the downward position.

4. Next, tilt the slats into the open position and again run the cloth along each individual slat.

5. Leave the slats in the open position until completely dry to prevent the build-up of mould or mildew.

HOW TO: INSTALL A VANITY Renovating your bathroom? Save yourself some money by installing your own vanity before the plumber arrives.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • Flatpack or pre-assembled vanity • Carpenter’s pencil • Screwdriver set or cordless screwdriver • Spirit level • Safety knife • Hole saw STEPS 1. Get your plumber to first turn off the water supply and remove the old taps, sink and pipes. Then you can get to work.

2. Start by removing the top of the old vanity. Carefully loosen

the caulk with your knife – this will make it easier to pull out the old top without damaging your walls.

3. Remove the old vanity by loosening all the screws that are connecting it to the wall.

Apply a firm pressure and keep the screwdriver in line with the screws to make the job easier. Clean up your job site ready for your new vanity.

4. Before fixing your new unit into place, find the wall studs and make a mark a little higher than the top of the new vanity – this will help you position it in the right place.

5. If you are using a flatpack vanity, assemble it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

6. Mark out on the floor (or the wall if installing a wallmounted unit) where the vanity will go, and work out where your waste and water pipes will need to go in the vanity – measure from the edge of your vanity to the

middle of the pipe and then from the back wall to the middle of the pipe.

7. Now transfer these measurements to the base or the back of the vanity and use a hole saw to cut a hole for the pipes. If the pipes come up from the floor, it will probably be easier to cut the holes in the bottom of the vanity before putting the backing panel on your unit, if it has one. Once the holes are cut, place the backing panel on and place the vanity over the pipes. It’s important to make sure the vanity is flush against the wall.

8. Use your spirit level to check that the vanity is straight before screwing the back rail into the wall. Once you have secured it to the wall, again check that your vanity is level before popping in the drawers and doors and securing the benchtop.

9. Now you can call your plumber in to install and connect the pipes and taps.

SHORTAGE OF SKILLED TRADES REMAINS AT CRUCIAL POINT

T

he shortage of skilled tradespeople remained acute in the September quarter of 2023 despite the return of skilled migration and a slowing in home building activity. ǡThe HIA Trades Report, released in late October, provides a quarterly review of

the availability of skilled trades and any demand pressures on trades operating in the residential building industry.

HIA senior economist Tom Devitt says the HIA Trades Availability Index deteriorated marginally in the September quarter to -0.65 compared to -0.62 June Quarter 2023.

“This change, although small, shows that builders found it increasingly difficult to find sufficient skilled tradespeople to undertake building works.

“The return of overseas workers since the re-opening of international borders in late 2021, has helped ease these constraints over the last 12-18 months, with the Index markedly improved from the -0.92 reading a little over a year earlier. ǡ“Despite this improvement over the past year, the most recent reading highlights how Australia’s home building sector continues to be constrained by some of the most acute

shortages of skilled tradespeople on record.

“The RBA’s steep interest rate increases since May 2022 have seen the volume of new work entering the pipeline slowing significantly.”

This resulted in Australia starting just 25,390 new houses in the June Quarter 2023 – one of the weakest quarters of the past decade, Mr Devitt says.

“This fall in the volume of new home starts will ease the acute shortage of skilled trades people, over the next year as the volume of homes under construction continues to slow.

“Australia is expected to have its weakest year in over a decade in terms of the volume of new houses commencing construction in 2024.

“To ensure that Australia has the skilled tradespeople to build the homes needed in the coming years, the industry needs to have continued access to skilled migrants, as well as train and upskill our existing and future workforce.”

t looks like Noosa has some competition in the demolition derby stakes.

House knockdowns have been turning heads in the north of our region for decades.

But high-profile knockdowns, rebuilds and renovations have been documented further afield in recent years. For example,ǡ15 Foote Ridge at Buderimǡwas demolished and rebuilt into a grand, European-inspired residence to capitalise on the unspoilt location and views from the property on the easterly escarpment.

But data analysis for the last financial year shows a new, possibly unexpected contender delivering a knockout blow to demolition numbers.

Ray White group data analyst William Clark told The Real Estate Conversation that Parrearra-Warana in the Kawana Waters area had 36 knockdowns – the greatest number in Queensland for that period.

After COVID lockdowns eased across the east coast, knockdowns on the Sunshine Coast seemed to gain momentum.

Motorists only had to drive down Oceanic Drive (from about Koorin Drive to Thunderbird Drive) at any given time to see more than a dozen properties covered by barriers and scaffolding, on both sides of the road, where original or relatively new family homes were being torn down to make way for beachside dream houses.

Mr Clark told The Real Estate Conversation that large numbers of knockdowns and redevelopments in neighbourhoods did not necessarily mean those suburbs were ‘gentrifying’ and seeing a new community moving in.

“More often than not, gentrification is slower and more sustainable than a sudden wave of knockdowns, so whether you are for it or against it, you will see it happening in a time frame you can respond to.”

Coast building industry sources report that knocking down an average home and taking away the materials costs about $35,000 to $40,000. But that price increases if the home contains asbestos, and also is dependent upon other factors, including concrete used in footings and dumping charges.
