I
n this job I am always learning. Whether it’s a DIY trick or how to correctly style a bedside table, there is always something fresh and interesting to take on board. So, I’m the first to admit that until this month I had thought ‘vampires’ were those mythical blood-sucking creatures. Well, it turns out that the term also applies to mobile and battery charges that are plugged into the wall socket but not in use. This is because they consume small amounts of energy when plugged in. At home, I’m forever switching off and unplugging computers, phone chargers, televisions and even the kettle. Now I have evidence that not only am I doing the right thing by our electricity bill, but the environment too! If, like me, you are interested in learning more energy-efficient tips for your home, don’t miss this month’s cover story. It’s on page six. ENERGY-EFFICIENT HOMES With electricity prices soaring faster than the temperatures in an Aussie summer, you should always look for ways to implement energy-saving devices and think of ways to improve natural amenity to avoid the use of airconditioners in summer and heating in winter. Something as simple as letting a little natural light in through a skylight can take away the need for artificial lighting in darker rooms. Getting stuck into a renovation project is the perfect time to assess the energy efficiency of the rooms you are working on and see where you can make some improvements. A lot of small changes, like changing lightbulbs, can add up when implemented throughout the house, while larger renovation projects might allow you to get more creative with ways to save in the long term on your power bills.
Check your windows If your renovation budget allows, spring for tinted windows. This will not only give you more privacy, but will block out more UV light and assist in keeping your home a more consistent temperature. Otherwise, check around your windows for air leaks. If you find some, you can add weatherstripping around the frames, or add a bead of silicone caulk over any cracks.
Replace incandescent bulbs A lot of households have already made the lightbulb switch away from incandescents, but if you have yet to do so, don’t hesitate. Halogen bulbs, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs are much more energyefficient and since the average home uses 40 bulbs, switching over is a great way to save.
Replace appliances If tackling an appliance-heavy room like the kitchen, laundry or living room, consider investing in energy-rated products that will consume less power and reduce your regular energy costs.

This classic, timeworn look can look a touch antiquated so, how can you bring the look in your modern, contemporary home?
There is a new style coming into vogue – British Colonial. So, what exactly is this style, and how can you adopt the features of this look throughout your interior design? Your Asset Renovations’ Sophie Hendry shares more about this iconic, elegant interior theme, its trademark features and how you can incorporate them into your home.
British Colonial style is a style created by the British explorers of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, also known as the Age of Discovery, where explorers discovered the Americas, the coasts of Africa, the Middle East, India and East Asia. These pioneering explorers created a unique interior style, with their travel-influenced characteristics

The key is by keeping colours fresh with whites over creams and beiges, balancing heavy, solid furniture with light, leggy chairs and pieces; using tropical indoor plants with oversized foliage to add life and energy to a room; and using subtle texture to add an earthy charm via natural jutes, raw timbers, marble, seagrass, and sea-shells. The natural colour palette of blue, green, white, leather and timber is a good foundation for building a British Colonial inspired room. While it is generally assumed a draftsperson will cost less than an architect when it comes to pricing, as is typical across most industries this usually depends on the level of expertise and experience of your professional.
INTERIOR DESIGNER Interior designers can work where you are planning your renovation from the inside out. An interior designer is trained to be across the final product flow, function and look of rooms but depending on the extent of works to be conducted, you would need to check if your interior designer is qualified to provide final plans. Depending on your budget, you might be able to engage an architect or draftsperson and interior designer to ensure final designs meet your vision.
BUILDING CONTRACTOR A building contractor can also complete plans and is a fairly cost-effective option, but perhaps less open to individuality as many building companies have a certain look they specialise in, whether it be contemporary, classic or coastal. They usually have standard specs for fit-out with companies they deal with on a regular basis, for instance tile and electrical good suppliers, so you would need to specify any individual choices outside of their range prior to finalising pricing. The good option with building contractors is that they oversee the whole process from the design to planning and building phase. They are responsible for resolving any design issues which arise, therefore avoiding any conflict that might eventuate if you engage a separate designer and builder. Be aware your designer will still need to engage other consultants and you will need to set clear boundaries on your involvement in the process.
