He specialises in luxury new homes and renovation projects.
“Sustainable home design is about reducing energy usage and working with the climate To improve the liveability of your home, while also reducing the impact on the environmenT” CLIMATE CONSIDERATIONS
KEY MATERIALS When you begin your build or renovation project, consider choosing building materials that have a lighter impact on the planet. • Timber – a natural, renewable plantation that doesn’t require a lot of energy to produce. It is also a natural insulator, which helps to reduce the amount of energy needed for heating and cooling. • Rammed earth – a mixture of raw materials including earth, chalk, lime and gravel. It can be used as an insulator as it has high thermal properties, is non-toxic, non-combustible and adds a feeling of weight to the structure of the home. Keep in mind that it can be costly. • Hempcrete – a combination of water, hemp, hurds or shives and lime. Using this product as an insulator can lower your impact on the environment. It is thermally efficient in both hot and cold climates.
Tailoring the design of your home to the climate and best living aspect of your location can help maintain the temperature both inside and out. Known as ‘passive home design’, this method can reduce or eliminate the need for additional heating or cooling methods, therefore making your home more sustainable. When building or renovating, consider where the sun rises and sets to help position your windows, skylights, openings or solar panels. This will allow natural light and heat in so you can spend less on other forms of energy. Shading your home by planting a tree, adding curtains, shutters or installing an outside awning may also help block out the heat. Also look at where the natural breezes enter and exit the block and find ways to capture them with the placement of windows or doors,. Or, block where necessary with the sealing of gaps in the wall.

GOING GREEN House plants not only add beauty to the inside of your home, but could also help reduce energy costs and improve air quality. Plants help break vertical airflow, which slows and cools down the air. This means air conditioning units or fans may require less energy to cool the air before circulating around a room. You can also get these same benefits from installing a vertical garden or living wall in the inside of your home. Not only do these vertical gardens look unique, but they can also help purify the air, insulate a room and absorb sound from the outside. However, they can be costly to install and to maintain, so it is best to research your options.

BACKYARD BENEFITS You can also improve the sustainability of your home by considering how your landscaping is going to influence the heat, shade and cool air around the building. A well-positioned tree or shrub may help shade your house from the summer sun, or greatly reduce the ground temperature around your home. To help insulate your home, you could consider growing vines on the outside walls or near windows to absorb the summer heat. The positioning of a pool or waterway can also be used to generate cool air from evaporation, which can then be drawn into the house.

DESIGN // SMART WATER USAGE You can save water around your home by implementing watersaving design principles and installing water-saving fittings and appliances. Inside the home • When it comes to your toilet, consider installing a low-volume water flushing function to cut back on the amount of water used. • Bath usage can use a lot of water, so consider installing a shower with modern aerating tapware that can reduce the volume of water as it mixes with air, giving it a softer feel. • If you choose to upgrade your appliances, such as your washing machine or dishwasher, look for those with a rating specified by the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme. The more stars on the WELS label, the more water efficient the appliance. Outside the home • When setting up your garden look at the natural flow of the land and position garden beds where water will naturally run. • Consider regularly laying mulch to keep the soil moist, or trying water crystals that can help absorb larger quantities of water. • On small blocks, consider artificial turf lawns. These allow water to still get to the soil underneath while removing the need for watering (or mowing) the lawn.
TIP Before you begin implementing these techniques in your home, it’s important to consider what costs are involved and whether they fit within the budget for your build or renovation. You may also want to seek further advice or assistance from a design or building expert to see if these options are suitable for your situation.
SPOTLIGHT Project: SPINNAKER HOUSE This stunning Hervey Bay residence is the work of Sparks Architects, based in Peregian Beach. It has been shortlisted in the coveted Houses Awards Sustainability category. The winners will be announced in late July. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The site’s topography, orientation, exposure to the elements and neighbours, define the building’s form. The building responds through systems of blocking and filtering: walls of sliding glass, screens, and large scale automated clerestories. The resultant form and spatial dynamics are reminiscent of a full sail, a Spinnaker. Lead architect: Dan Sparks Photographer: Christopher Frederick Jones

EXPERT ADVICE //
POOL PRIVACY Reader Sue Potter asks Cassandra, “I have a neighbour’s high window looking down into my pool entertaining area. There is only half of a metre against the fence line so it is not possible to plant high growing screen plants. I don’t really want to shade the pool, but I would like to adapt some type of screen for privacy in this outdoor area. I hope you can help.”

Buy 10L Berger Everlast Low Sheen & get 2L of Ceiling White FREE!
CASSANDRA SAYS It sounds as though you have quite the challenge there. While half a metre is not wide enough to plant trees or large shrubs, it is enough space to plant trailing vines that could climb up a vine frame and provide privacy. The safest way to approach this situation would be to alternate physical privacy screen panels and vine frame structures. This will provide partial screening to portions of the pool while the vines grow, it will also provide a safety net in case some of the vines find it difficult to establish and grow well. A half a metre width is wide enough for the footings of your privacy screens. It is also wide enough to plant your climbing vines. A safe way to work with your
vine species is to choose three to five varieties that you plant at the base of each vine structure. This will enable you to try different species to see which ones do the best in the pool surrounds. Some species you may like to consider include jasmine, cissus, pandorea or the snake vine also known as hibbertia. Ensure that the planting area is cultivated well with a good quality topsoil and finished with a thick layer of organic mulch. Water well and make
sure the area drains well. Bamboo species can reach a greater height than a vine frame structure, but can also be messy dropping leaves into your pool. If you do decide to trial a bamboo species, ensure that it is a clumping variety and will not damage your pool shell with its roots in the long term. Best of luck with your privacy screen Sue, thank you for sending your question in.

a burst OF COLOUR
The psychology behind colour is an interesting notion. As Wassily Kandinsky once stated, it is something that influences the soul and can brighten or darken your mood. The bold use of colour has made a dramatic comeback in recent years, beautifully offset by wood grain and velvet furniture in vibrant hues.

HOW ALEXA GOT HER PERSONALITY Have you ever asked Alexa about her feelings? Or told her that she is hilarious? No need to be embarrassed, you’re not alone. Browse the reviews of the Echo smart speaker on Amazon. com, and you’ll find countless examples of people calling Alexa playful and funny, and a great companion, or even a friend. That’s no accident. Alexa’s developers have been working from the start on giving her a distinct personality, recalled the Amazon’s senior vice president for devices and services, Dave Limp, during the company’s Re:Mars conference in Las Vegas in June. This was in part a response to other smart assistants already in the market. “Sometimes not being first with something is a happy accident,” Mr Limp said. Apple had been shipping phones with its Siri assistant for some time, and Google had also begun to offer voice functionality for Android phones. At least initially, these phone assistants were very utilitarian, recalled Mr Limp. “They were for command and control, maybe navigation. And when you’re doing a command and control, personality actually gets

in the way,” he said. “You don’t want your steering wheel in your car to have a personality.” Amazon didn’t have the same kind of legacy, which allowed the company to start from scratch. “From day one, we were able to think about Alexa as an embodiment of a person,” Mr Limp said. This started with the wake word, which is the phrase that wakes up the assistant to listen to voice commands. “It would’ve been much easier, trust me, to have it be ‘Hey Amazon’ or ‘Okay Amazon’,” said Mr Limp. “But we felt like having a name, in this case Alexa, was [conveying] so much more personality.” Alexa developers didn’t just stop with the name. They also decided to go beyond the utilitarian helpfulness of an algorithm by giving the smart assistant something that humans have a lot of – her own opinions. “If you’ve ever gone to a dinner party devoid of opinions, you wanted to run not walk away from that dinner party,” Mr Limp said. “It’s just a boring dinner party.” The result: Alexa has opinions about all kinds of things, from food to pets to even some slightly political topics. She is a self-proclaimed feminist, and will tell you that she thinks everyone “deserves to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect”. How much personality does Alexa need to be relatable, but not annoying?
“Twenty-two percent,” joked Amazon vice president of Alexa experience and Echo devices Toni Reid during an interview with Variety, before adding, “No, there is no actual formula for that.” “We knew we wanted the assistant to have characteristics that were important to us at Amazon as builders,” Ms Reid recalled. “Smart, humble, helpful, sometimes funny.” But while her team was envisioning Alexa as relatable from day one, it didn’t anticipate how much people would relate to her. “When we launched, to be honest, we were a bit surprised at how much people reacted to the personality,” Ms Reid said. The result was an even bigger focus on injecting personality throughout the entire Alexa experience. “We run a bunch of kind of experiments and kind of test the boundaries a bit.” One of the lessons from these experiments: just like humans, assistants can become overbearing. And to get the balance right, context matters. “There are certain times when you’re in a hurry,” Ms Reid said. “You need information very quickly. Probably not the best time to insert a little bit of personality.” Her team has even talked about tweaking Alexa’s personality to adapt to each and every user, but that approach could be challenging as well. “That person could exhibit different types
Ausram & Bespoke Habitats working in harmony to create your dream home
“we were able to think of alexa as an embodiment of a person” of behaviour in different situations,” said Amazon vice president of Echo and Alexa devices Miriam Daniel. Being contextually relevant was the better approach, she argued. “When somebody comes home and says, ‘Alexa, I’ve had a long hard day,’ versus when somebody says ‘Alexa, what have you done today?’ The response you give could be different.” There is some good news for anyone who isn’t a people person at all, and who doesn’t need their smart speaker to have that many
opinions. A little over a year ago, Amazon introduced a feature called brief mode that can be enabled in the Alexa app. With it, Alexa speaks a lot less and even responds with chime sounds instead of verbal confirmations for some commands. It provides a more utilitarian experience with less personality. But while that may work for some, most consumers actually do want Alexa to have some personality. “It’s a balancing act,” Ms Reid said. -AAP/Reuters

BEAUTIFULLY BOLD If you are looking for a more bold scheme, consider using deep blues, greens, or charcoal feature colours in your living areas, dining room or bedrooms to add an exciting element to the interior space. However, intense colours shouldn’t be used throughout the whole house, but instead used sparingly as a statement to create impact and define the mood of the space.

Blue D Dimension’s dark inky blue is perfect for a feature wall. It’s available from Inspirations Paint.
NATURALLY NEUTRAL When taking on an interior paint project, whites and neutrals always look timeless and beautiful in any room setting. An impressive way to modernise these tones in your home is to go with either a grey or warm-grey base (avoid cream tones). Paint your walls with those tones and opt for a sharp pure-white accent for the ceilings, architraves, window sills, cornices, doors and skirting boards.

Ready to take the plunge? Poolfab Pool + Landscape Creation’s Sean Lynch shares the benefits of installing a pool as part of your renovation.
Q. Is it wise to build a pool during a renovation or while building a new home? A. There are many design and construction benefits to building your new pool and outdoor space with your home. Designing and creating the indoor and outdoor spaces together creates a flow of materials between the two areas. The pool’s filtration, pipes, power, fencing and tiling can all be considered in the home’s grand design for a flawless finish and efficient construction process. Another benefit is the reduced costs on pool excavation, and ensuring you have access to the pool area, which may be reduced once your new home is complete. It also means there’ll be no construction works disrupting your finished house and landscaping. Q. Are there any benefits to leaving the design and construction of the pool until after the home is completed? A. Starting the pool build after the house build just prolongs the total construction time frame unnecessarily, so I always suggest that my clients build the pool and house together if possible. Waiting until the house is completed to start the pool usually has no benefit as generally the access width for the machines to excavate the pool will be reduced, which slows down the excavation process and increases costs.
Q. How can people make sure they are getting the best value for money when building a pool for their home? A. Stop and think about why you’re installing a swimming pool. Is it for your kids, entertaining guests, is it an investment? A swimming pool for

kids might include a slide and a wading area, but if you want something that is even more visually appealing, you might consider a built-in water feature, high-end coping and a negative edge. Factor in how much water it will take to keep your swimming pool full, as well as cleaning and
water maintenance costs and any accessories you’ll need to purchase. When establishing a budget, don’t forget to think long term. Contact your insurance company and find out if owning a swimming pool affects your homeowner’s policy.
Q. How will the nature of the site impact how the pool is constructed while the house is being built? A. The soil conditions, slope stability and proximity of the pool to the house are the main factors. Some pools may require additional form

work if they are to be built above the ground. Others may require additional foundations if they are built in loose ground or close to the home. Q. What are the safety requirements for building a pool? A. If the pool shell goes in before the house, some sites may require a safety cover over the pool during the home’s construction. Generally a safety fence around the pool shell during the build will suffice, if the pool is far enough away. Q. How long does it take to build a pool? A. Each project is different in relation to the size, site conditions and access to the site, which all determine the time frame for construction. A standard pool and landscape package should take 12 weeks from final concept approval to project completion.

POOL LANDSCAPING When it comes to pool landscaping there is a lot to consider. The team at Narellan Pools recommends that homeowners work in conjunction with a landscape company to ensure a successful project. Landscapers can help advise on a pool type or shape that will suit your needs, and make sure your yard is transformed into an environment you’ll love to live in. However, there are still many things to consider. Here are the top suggestions from Narellan Pool’s expert team.

BE INSPIRED A great place to start, even before choosing a pool style or a landscape company, is to gather inspiration from magazines, display homes and online resources such as Pinterest. Find examples that you think fit with your style and taste, and that will also work with your home or existing architecture. Once you’ve hired a landscape professional you can share your findings and discuss the best options according to your budget and backyard size. It’s also worth talking to family and friends for advice and style recommendations. Those closest to you know your style and can help you make decisions. Don’t be afraid to experiment a little to create a pool area you’ll continue to enjoy for years to come.
SAFETY Safety is one of the reasons why pool landscaping is so important. Regulations will require you to include elements, such as approved fencing or non-climbable zones, for safety purposes. Landscapers will also be able to advise on legal requirements. Keep in mind that pool safety also factors in wet decks and surrounding areas. You will need to think beyond the pool and consider non-slip surfaces and spaces that contain lots of room for both lounges and clear pool access. It will put everyone’s safety front and centre.
LIGHT Did you know that a pool’s colour is affected by the environment itself? This means on cloudy days, the pool colour will appear darker than on sunny days. This also means the

pool THE PERFECT FINISH surrounding environment, such as trees and shrubs, will affect the colour of your pool. Think about the placement of plants and other features and discuss with your landscaper about how the natural light will affect the area. You will also need to consider lighting for when the sun goes down. Strategically placed lights surrounding the pool area are just as important as other features, especially if you’re prone to entertaining in the evenings. Consider light elements and how to build them into the surrounding landscape, so your pool can be enjoyed any time of the day or night.
STYLING The design of your house will ultimately play a large role in designing the type of pool and surrounding landscape. Don’t think about it as a separate piece. Rather, find ways to incorporate its design into your backyard oasis. If your house is modern, think about a pool and
landscape full of sharp, clean lines. If your house is more traditional, adding gardens and naturally sourced rocks may accentuate the home while mirroring the surrounding environment.

ENTERTAINING? Pools are a great location for friends and families to gather. Many people get pools to be able to entertain guests while enjoying the outdoors. That means you’ll need to consider who you are entertaining while designing your surrounding landscape. Small cottage houses for changing, outdoor showers for rinsing off, covered areas for prepping meals or relaxing, should all be incorporated into the final design according to how you envision using your pool area in the future.

There are so many options when it comes to pool design and materials. Here are some of the choices to consider.
POOL FEATURE //
LAP These modern pools are ideal for people who want to combine relaxation, leisure and fitness. They can be designed to seamlessly complement your home and are also a good option for a narrow space.
ABOVE-GROUND Modern above-ground pools can look great, particularly if you build them in with decking. They are your least expensive option, great for small yards and can be taken with you if you move house. Keep in mind that they have a shorter lifespan than the in-ground variety.
“plunge pools are growing in popularity and are no longer reserved for resorts

FOR STYLE and Security Choose Colorbond® Fencing
WHICH MATERIAL? In-ground pools are generally made from concrete or fibreglass. Your decision will come down to a number of factors including budget and personal preference. Fibreglass pools are low-maintenance and are cheaper and quicker to install than concrete, which are poured on-site in your custom design and lined with tiles or pebblecrete. A third option of vinyl lining is also available. This option is inexpensive but the vinyl needs replacing every seven to 10 years.
PLUNGE Plunge pools are growing in popularity and are no longer reserved for expensive resorts. They can be created from concrete or fibreglass. Shipping containers are also a popular option.

Favoured by tradespeople, Bostik’s Seal N’ Flex family of expansion joint sealants are easy to use. The newest addition to the line is the Bostik Seal N’ Flex Advance, which is designed on a new hybrid sealant technology commonly referred to as SPUR (silyl-terminated polyurethane). Bostik says this modern chemistry improves the weathering characteristics of the traditional PU sealant while removing the isocyanates and solvents. “Alongside health and occupational safety benefits, Seal N’ Flex Advance boasts several advantages that will make application easier and faster.”

IN HARMONY Achieve balance in your home by being subtle with your pattern choices and making sure everything is in harmony, rather than opting for a feature pattern.
OFF THE WALL Create the illusion of more space by placing furniture away from walls rather than against them. Even a few centimetres can make a big difference.

PERFECT ILLUSION Use see-through or reflective items such as glass desks, large mirrors, open shelving and transparent plastic chairs to make rooms seem larger. A large mirror placed on a wall facing a window will reflect light around the room while creating the illusion of a second window.

Ghost chairs and open-back chairs, both pictured, can give the sense of space in a smaller room.
LINE IT UP
UPSIDE OF GREEN A vertical garden is a great way to have a lush green area without taking up too much space. You can also utilise the space for edible plants or sweet-smelling climbing vines like jasmine.
A striped rug can create the feeling of length in a space when the stripes are run parallel to the longest side of the room. Get the same effect by running thick stripes vertically up a feature wall.

finishing touches Advice and ideas to turn your renovation into a home. PERFECT PRINTS Choosing the right artwork for your home comes down to two main elements – personal choice and tone. When selecting a print or painting for your walls, go with your instincts. Decide on what tone and colouring suit your style and go from there. We love the Vintage Botanical print from Domayne. With its foliage and feathers, the bird’s blue plumage is accented by earthy tones.
NEW PRODUCT STATEMENT FURNITURE Don’t shy away from unique and bold pieces of furniture, particularly if it is a piece you love. Be sure to stand back and look at the entire room to gauge how the piece will fit with your existing interior design. The stylish and comfortable Jenga fabric accent chair from Domayne will seamlessly work into any living space. Upholstered in vico fabric, this chair can be paired with various styles and themes.
What better time to rug up with new bedding than now? As the Celsius plunges, you will rest warmly with the Sitra grey quilt cover set from Kas Australia. A denim-look cover is elevated with circles crafted in a raised weave, adding an extra layer of texture. To finish this smart look, the speckled reverse print complements the front, and the design is finished with a neat knife edge. For local stockists visit kasaustralia.com.au.
