COVER STORY //
If a summer storm hits, make sure you keep an eye on the water level in your potted plants. Leaving pot saucers constantly full can cause waterlogging and rotting as well as providing a breeding ground for mosquitos. If rain is persistent, remove the saucer completely until it stops.
PREPARING YOUR HOUSE FOR THE HOLIDAYS It’s starting to feel a lot like Christmas. Whether you are hosting an event or have guests staying, we have some tips to get your house ready for the festive season.
OUTDOORS The sun is out in force year round on the Coast, but in summer time it can pack a punch and have a huge impact on your garden. Finding the right balance in your garden can make or break it in the warmer months. Here are our tips for greening up your gardens to impress neighbours, family and friends. Water is one of the biggest challenges gardeners come up against this time of the year. The heat quickly saps the life from potted plants, while heavy rains from summer storms can drown them. There are some plants you can turn to that enjoy dry conditions and are therefore ideal for the gardener who may not remember to water their potted plants regularly in the summer months. They include dwarf bougainvilleas, dipladenias and succulents, which are great in pots of all shapes and sizes. Looking for hardy, drought-tolerant plants for the garden is also essential if you are looking for a low-maintenance arrangement.
This doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice aesthetics. Petunias, portulaca, salvia, dianthus, zinnias, vinca and marigolds provide some great summer colour because they love the heat and will flower for months. Hardy perennials like agapanthus, angelonia, geraniums, mandevillas, hibiscus and sunpatiens are also great choices for beautiful flowers, while Chinese star jasmine, gardenias, magnolia Little Gem and frangipanis will also give you a summer fragrance every time you step into your backyard. Growing from seeds is ideal at this time of the year and is a cheaper option if you are plating out a large area. But seedlings are also readily available if you cannot wait to see that splash of colour in the garden. Even the hardiest of plants will need a good soil base and regular watering in the first couple of weeks to help them establish. Then you can pretty much leave them to flourish.

INDOORS Clean – It’s that dreaded chore, but one that will leave you feeling great – your house will look terrific too. Set time aside to wash down the walls, clean airconditioning vents and wipe over ceiling fans. The more clogged an airconditioning filter is, the harder it has to work to keep the house cool. We recommend removing the filters, taking them outside and giving them a good shake or brush down. Next, wash them in some warm soapy water and rinse. Be sure that the filters are completely dry before
reinstalling. Quick fixes – Replace burnt-out light bulbs, mend any torn window screens and update any broken door handles or locks. Declutter – This is a big one in the lead up to Christmas. Clean out the kids’ rooms or toy room and donate any unused or unwanted toys and books. Look for a quick tidy-up fix and invest in some storage. We like stylish baskets, toy boxes and shelves.
COOL OFF Nothing says summer like a dip in the family pool. But, before you cool off, there are a few jobs you will need to do to get the pool summer ready. Firstly, check the fence to make sure it is safe and not in need of repair. Replace old gate latches and update CPR signs. Remove any nearby furniture and prune back trees or vegetation that could be used by young children to climb over the fence.

The Queensland Swimming Pool and Spa Association recommend the following tips for keeping on top of pool maintenance. • Maintain a chlorine residual of 1 to 2 milligrams per litre • Choose products that suit your needs • If you can smell chlorine it generally means you are not using enough.

KITCHEN // Minimalism The minimalist, less-ismore trend will continue, but will gravitate towards displaying kitchen necessities and décor items on open shelves. So pull out your cookbooks and favourite crockery and decorate with some potted herbs or flowers to create a homely feel.
Shiny finish When it comes to the hardware, brass and polished chrome will continue to be the favourites this summer with both finishes also being heavily used in sink tapware.
Emerging trends for summer With a change of season comes a change of trends and there are a few ways you can get ahead of the curve ball if you are looking at renovating your kitchen. Natural timbers are the flavour of the season with exposed wood joinery taking over.
Colour it A neutral palette is one everyone can appreciate and grey, taupe and greige will continue to be popular colour choices. Those who are looking to spice things up in the kitchen should gravitate towards shades of blue, moss or sage green. Add pops of colour by updating benchtops or replacing under-bench cupboards while keeping overhead cupboards a neutral colour.

WE DO IT ALL KITCHENS INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL DOORS WARDROBE DOORS AND FIT OUTS SHUTTERS When every thing has its place If you have time for a pre-festive clean-up of the kitchen, consider the following tips to help improve the functionality of your kitchen space. • Place a shelf near the stove to keep cooking oils, utensils, and spices handy. • If space permits, include S-hooks on the side of the range hood to hang frequently used pots and pans. • Hanging knives on a magnetic strip on the splashback makes them easy to access, while also keeping them out of the reach of small hands. • Speaking of small hands, set aside a cupboard that is low to the ground and place all of the kids’ favourite dishes, cups and cutlery in it so they can easily access them. • If you have a spare cupboard, you can place containers in for glass, plastic and paper/cardboard to make recycling a breeze.

Getting the guest bedroom ready Christmas time usually means family and friends travel to visit and your guest bedroom may be their destination. There are some simple things you can do to create a cosy and comforting environment for your guests, which will make their stay even more enjoyable.
Make the bed comfy Offer a selection of pillows in different profiles. Some people prefer low pillows as they sleep on their backs, while others who sleep on their sides require higher pillows. Placing a couple of different options on the bed means they’ll be comfortable at night.
Dress it up Once the room has been cleaned and the bed made, you can add some finishing touches. You could place a little vase of flowers, a lamp and tissues on the bedside table.
Sheets and duvets that sit in cupboards can start to smell stale, so be sure to wash the sheets, covers and air out the duvet before your guests arrive.
Flat packs made easy! We design and customise your flatpack kitchen Our point of difference from large hardware stores is that we perfectly design and manufacture your kitchen to your needs. HOLIDAY INSPIRATION Has it been a while since you updated your Christmas decorations? Or, are you like the team at My Renovation, buying a select few each year? Either way, we have some ideas to deck your house out with style. Out of the box Gone are the days of limited decoration options. Today, you can purchase hanging decorations in all shapes, sizes and styles. Animal lovers will like the range available at Domayne. Pictured are the Roy Caterpillar and Parker Penguin ornaments.
Cou down Count Traditionally, advent calendars formed part of the overall Trad décor and were created with thought and style in mind. déc These days, you can buy chocolate-filled calendars for as The little as $2, and while the kids might love them, they don’t really add to your décor. That’s why we love this creation from rea Ferm Living. Fer
tip Keep in mind that decorations don’t necessarily have to be hanging ornaments. Introduce some living elements to your décor, either in your table setting or throughout the home. Vases of fresh poinsettias will brighten your living area, kitchen or bathroom.
Don’t overdo it Sometimes less is more. It comes down to individual style and preference. Those who like the minimalistic Scandi style may choose to scale back decorations. Selecting a few simple pieces that evoke emotion or the spirit of Christmas can look as great as a glitzy, twinkling tree.
Modern touches More and more people are introducing a second tree into the home. If you don’t want to go the full hog and buy a second green pine-style tree, shop around for a modern variety. We love the Pine Tree Christmas tree from Domayne.

EXPERT ADVICE //
The Why? On any given day across Australia hundreds of property owners will be deliberating over whether to renovate their property. Their motivations for doing so will vary with some seeking to increase space, others wanting to renovate for profit, some hoping to restore a home to former glory or others simply hoping to avoid the hassle of moving house. This is a dilemma I have faced firsthand. Ever since I invested in my first property at 23 it’s been a question of hold, fix or sell? Ultimately, the answer to this real estate quandary usually lies in the question of why. In my first column for My Renovation, we’re going to start from the beginning of the renovation process and consider the why behind your renovation. You may have acquired your

existing property for a variety of reasons which are likely to influence your renovating decision, for instance, it’s near a great school, close to work, you loved the design or you secured it at an affordable price. All of these factors will weigh in on your decision so it’s a good idea to list these factors down on paper. Once that is done you can then move on and consider why you feel it might be worthwhile renovating. Most people renovate to either sell for profit, increase rental return, to upgrade an existing home, or to satisfy a creative desire to redesign or restore. If your why for renovating is to sell for profit or improve rental return then your renovation rationale will revolve around minimising cost to maximise return. If you wish to turn your property into a forever home then it is vital you create a space that has the flexibility to grow in accordance with your
family situation. Or if you’ve decided to restore a home like a Queenslander to its former glory your renovation will be compromised by its vernacular architecture. Ultimately, when the renovation bug starts to bite the most important thing to do is to ascertain your reno raison d’etre – list these down so you have clearly defined objectives. Knowing the why, or the purpose behind your renovation, will not only ensure the end result achieves your aims but will also influence how you implement and perfect your renovation. In future columns we look forward to working with you through this renovation process but for now, for those contemplating a renovation project, the best advice is take time to fully understand your why.

OUTDOOR // Home handyman hints Leading garden tool and product manufacturer Stihl has launched a new battery compact range aimed at even the most unenthusiastic gardener. This technology is clean, environmentally-friendly, lightweight and easy to use. Stihl has injected its 90 years of engineering and technology knowledge into these products and the team at My Renovation gives the range a big thumbs up. All four products can be charged by an interchangeable battery and take around 30 minutes to charge. The range includes a hedge trimmer, grass trimmer, chainsaw and blower. Stihl claim that the grass trimmer can trim around a football field twice on a single charge – that’s pretty impressive. Visit your local supplier for details.

NORM EVANS FLOORS How to maintain and trim garden hedges New hedges should be pruned from an early stage to establish a shape and prevent leggy, unhealthy growth. The amount you prune back will depend on the type of hedge. Start shaping the hedge as soon as practical – a formal hedge whether new or established, should be tapered so that it is wider at the bottom than the top, ensuring the lower part will get the sunlight it needs for healthy growth. Once the hedge is established, regular maintenance will ensure it keeps healthy and neat. If you’re experienced you can cut a hedge by eye, but it can be a good idea to set your lines with lengths of string taut between canes. If a formal hedge has got out of shape, cutting it back severely is often the only remedy. But bear in mind that this method is not suitable for all species. Conifers, in particular, react
badly if you cut into old wood. Hedge cutting seasons and the frequency of cutting depends on the species, but as a rule of thumb, formal evergreens like box or privet should be trimmed around two to three times a year during the growing season and some fastgrowing conifers like leylandii may need trimming more frequently to keep them in control. Do not cut conifers after the end of August. Stocky deciduous hedges like beech or hornbeam should be cut in late August, and if major renovation is required, do that in late February while the plant is still dormant. Always remember, it is important not to cut too early in the year so as to avoid disturbing nesting birds. - Information supplied by Stihl. For more hints visit stihl.com.au

DIY // With the perfect climate to enjoy entertaining outdoors, many Sunshine Coast homes have a deck. Whether it is timber, tiled, or concrete, now is the time to give your deck a little TLC to have it looking perfect for the guests who will come to enjoy your company at Christmas.
How to get your deck ready for Christmas Tips for making the most of your outdoor area.
The first step is to give the deck a sweep to clear away dirt and leaves. Use a stronger bristled brush if you have a lot of debris build-up. Now that the deck is clear, give it a wash down. You can get specialised timber deck cleaners from your local hardware store or you could use sugar soap for concrete or tile decks. Be sure to mix to the correct measurements and wear gloves and a mask. Once you’ve scrubbed the deck down with the cleaner and left it for the nominated time on the product instructions, get out the high pressure cleaner and blast off all of the dirt and grime. Have a well-earned drink while the deck dries. If you have a tile or concrete deck, your job is now done. But if you have a timber deck, get out some stain or paint and give it another coat or two to really make it look like new.

TIP – WOOD Before staining your deck, be sure the wood is dry and free of contaminants. Stain that’s applied to damp surfaces won’t adhere well and can crack or peel.
TIP – TILES Grout is the hardest element of a tiled deck to keep clean, because it is so porous. To make sure your cleaning efforts are maximised, use a soft or medium-bristled toothbrush with your cleaner and get right into the crevices between the tiles.

OUTDOOR // Choosing shady spots Summer time is ideal for selecting where in your garden you would like to introduce some shade. This is because the sun moves in different ways throughout the other three months of the year, so you won’t know how effective your shade tree will be when the sun is at its hottest. Remember to keep clear of your home, fence lines and underground infrastructure if you are wanting to plant a large shade tree. Check the growth dimensions of the plant species to ensure it won’t overgrow your garden. Popular evergreen varieties include tree waratah and tulipwood. If you don’t want to lose the all-important winter sun in your garden, consider deciduous varieties that will give you the best of both worlds, some of the most popular varieties are tabebuia and maple.
Installing an irrigation system will help maintain your lawn’s health during the summer months. Sprinkler systems are convenient, assist in conserving water and are time efficient.
The only FACELIFT you’ll ever need. Transform your kitchen with replacement doors, drawer fronts, benchtop and splashback.

Back to nature One thing is certain this year – there is a focus on nature when it comes to styling. Tables will be adorned with greenery including a range of soft and dark tones mixed with timber and elements such as pinecones and twigs.
FESTIVE TABLE Dress up your dining table this Christmas with these festive ideas.
Sophistication This is one of our favourite table settings. It’s modern, sophisticated and incorporates natural elements. We love the mix of gold, silver, white and blue.
Toned down This table setting incorporates environmental elements but in a simplified style. The timber placemats, pine cones and fresh cuttings work well with the subtle and pretty lighting.
