MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE 33 years – this is how much time on average that we spend in bed. This compares with the average 10 years we spend watching television. And yet, we tend to put more effort and time into designing our living room compared to the humble bedroom.

Often it is the last room of the house that we invest in when renovating. Not anymore! We share our top tips for creating a comfortable haven that will have you daydreaming about bedtime.

PROJECT PLANNING The first thing you need to decide when renovating a room is if you sticking to the original floorplan or if you will be extending the space. Your bedroom renovation is no different. If you choose to redesign you may need to engage a project team, depending on your skills. During this planning stage, you will need to allocate space for storage, and plan lighting.

Key points: • Choose a practical wardrobe – do you have space for a walk-in or will you be installing open cabinetry? Allow plenty of storage. Installing cabinetry can be an expensive task so it’s best to get it right the first time.

• Flooring – A bedroom doesn’t have to have the same flooring as the rest of the house. Carpet, timber, tiles – the choice is yours. You can soften hard flooring with stylish rugs.

• Lighting – Our preferred option for bedroom lighting is a product that includes a dimmer. This way you can have bright lighting when you require it, or softer illumination to create a sense of peace.

Do you want pendants? Are you incorporating bedside lights? And don’t forget the cupboards – recessed lighting can be a great option.

• Style – Choose your wall paint colour and build from there to introduce curtains or blinds. Once the main items are installed, you can focus on the overall interior design.

STORAGE IDEA Use decorative boxes and hampers as storage for all of the odds and ends that usually accumulate on furniture or in your cupboards. You can also buy a bed that has built-in drawers, or create a nook with shelving.

1. CURATED MESS An organised mess. Who knew there was such a thing? Well, in the interior design world, there certainly is. Reader Sue of Twin Waters asks Cassandra, “My low-set home is 12 years old with blue Colorbond roof and darker black-blue guttering with aluminium window frames in cream with matching house paint. I feel that my house colour is very dated, but replacing the windows is too costly. I know I can change the roof colour, but I’m really stuck as to how I can modernise the look of my home without a high cost.

CASSANDRA SAYS Thank you so much for writing in with your question. I’m sure there are many people on the Sunshine Coast with the same question as you. There are generally two cream tones that aluminium window frames come in. If your cream colour is very light you might be able to choose a body colour for internal and external walls that is a warm white and takes the focus off the windows.

A great example of this paint colour is Resene Black White. This tone of white looks white in the sun and on mass but has warm undertones to tone down your window frames.

If the cream colour of your window frame is quite deep you may be able to find a painter

The other option is to use window coverings such as plantation shutters or curtains to disguise the frames on the inside of your home. On the outside you can install a faux frame painted white around the perimeter of your windows and paint external parts of the aluminium frame where exposed.

If you decide to paint the window frames yourself ensure you prepare the aluminium surface properly by cleaning, masking the glass and walls, and using an etch primer.

Then use a spray paint suitable for aluminium work. Always follow the manufacturer’s specifications. You usually get what you pay for, so don’t choose the cheapest.

INSURANCE While the whole insurance process can greatly delay the start of renovations after a disaster, residents are advised to contact their insurance company as soon as possible to check what their policy includes or excludes, and seek guidance on the claims process.

Once all disaster management aspects have been resolved and you are allowed back into your home, it is usually advised not to make any improvements until the insurance assessors have assessed the property.

More specifically, the Insurance Council of Australia says in time of major damage to your home you should: 1. Return to your property only when emergency services declare it safe to do so.

2. Enter your property only when you are certain you are not at risk and if water has entered the property, do not turn on your electricity until it has been inspected by an electrician.

3. Take photos or video footage of the damaged property for the claims process

and retain samples of materials such as fabrics and carpet.

4. Delay repairs if possible until an assessor has been through to assess the damage first hand.

5. Remove and discard any water or mud-damaged goods that pose a health risk, such as saturated carpets and soft furnishings.

6. Make a list of each item and include a detailed description, such as brand, model and serial number.

7. Store damaged or destroyed items somewhere safe.

8. Speak to your insurer before you attempt or authorise any building work, including emergency repairs, and ask for the insurerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s permission in writing as unauthorised work may not be covered by your policy.

9. Do not throw away goods that could be salvaged or repaired.

10. Check if your policy covers debris removal as this can be quite expensive.

Water damage can be covertly extremely problematic to a home’s structure, and can adversely affect the healthy environment of the property.

After you experience water damage, whether it be from flooding, rainstorm or just a burst pipe, there are a few things you need to be aware of before deciding to handle the clean-up and drying out yourself if trying to save money or time.

When dealing with clean water, some basic steps to start the clean-up after water damage to your home include: 1. Remove the water by mopping the areas with high saturation.

2. Move furniture, electronic devices and possessions to a safe place.

3. Remove carpeting, curtains and rugs to dry.

4. If it’s dry outside, open doors, windows and cupboard doors.

Cleaning up from even minor water incursions is not always straightforward and there are three things to consider before attending to your property:

6. Check for the source of leaks in ceilings and roofs and repair it immediately.
