Seasonal plantings
HOUSE READY Christmas – a time of celebration, fun and festive parties. It is also a busy time for hosting guests and family at home. Here are some of our tips to ensure your home is organised and ready for the busy summer holidays.
Maintenance Summer is the perfect time for sitting outside on the deck and enjoying the warm, blissful afternoons. Of course, with any deck comes a maintenance schedule, which includes renailing your decking timber, re-tightening screws and restaining the timber. It’s important to stain outdoor decks at least once a year to protect the wood from sun damage. To do this, thoroughly clean the platform using a wood cleaning product. Once you have selected the right stain for your deck, apply with a natural bristle brush. Work with the grain and apply an even coat. It’s best to stain in the afternoon – the less heat, the better. Allow about 24 hours for the deck to dry.
Australian landscape architect and television personality Matt Leacy advises gardeners to give plenty of thought to their seasonal plantings. “If you’re looking to replant your garden when the full heat of summer has passed, consider buying some of your plants early and use them in table décor and even indoors (regularly rotating them outside to maintain health) over the Christmas season. Most succulents will make one or two months inside before needing to be rotated. If you have good light, even longer,’’ he says. “Also, consider planting herbs that you know will be in high rotation on summer cocktail and food menus. “Mint is fast growing and looks and smells great – just ensure it’s grown in a contained location so it doesn’t take over. “Layering rosemary with thyme, basil, coloured lettuce and other summer staples like coriander can also form a decorative and practical patch in your garden.” “It’s no secret that the quintessential Australian Christmas is one spent outdoors,” Matt adds. “However, outdoor festivities will invariably require protection from the harsh Aussie rays. “If you don’t already have an outdoor shade structure, it might be worth investing in one for Christmas. “Shade sails, retractable awnings, marquees, canopies and big market umbrellas can be great low-cost mobile options – and then you’ve got more permanent options like outdoor pavilions, pergolas and gazebos. “The great thing is that the investment will pay dividends year round, offering protection from the sun throughout summer and then rain and wind during the cooler months.” For more tips from Matt turn to page 22.

Checklist Perfecting the pool Pools are great fun during summer but it’s important to place an emphasis on safety. Don’t forget to check pool fencing to make sure it isn’t in need of repair. Remove any nearby furniture or prune back vegetation that could be used by young children to climb into the area. Check the pool gate to make sure it is latching correctly. DIY jobs: 1. Water testing. A pool’s pH level should sit between 7.2 and 7.8. 2. Check that the pool’s filtration system is working correctly. 3. Clean out the pool by scooping leaves from the water and the skimmer box.
Missed your annual spring clean? That’s okay, there is no time like the present to clean. Here are our five priorities when it comes to getting the house ready for visitors. Dust the ceiling fan blades. Check that the fan is balanced while you are at it. Clean the bathroom drains. Tip – use bicarb soda followed by vinegar for a clean and green approach. Clean out the airconditioning ducts and vents. Scrub and wash the window screens.

THE TABLE SETTING
There are a few reasons the luxe style is one of our favourites. It’s built on three great colours – blush, gold and rose gold. Plus, it utilises varying textures and materials to achieve a sophisticated finish.
Build from the base Whether you like placemats or a table cloth and crisp napkins, the base is a vital element of any table setting. Choose a texture that will suit the overall theme. Pictured is the Dahlia placemat in gold from Pillow Talk.
The Christmas tree is undoubtedly the most important part of your holiday style, but coming in a close second is your dining table. It is the place where memories with family and friends are created as you bond over the festive meal. Here, we unravel the key to creating the perfect luxe table.
The centrepiece This needs to be the star of your dining table. It should incorporate your chosen theme colours but it is also a great way to introduce a new texture or material such as twigs or green stems. Oversized vases of floral arrangements or baubles, as well as stylish candelabras are a great place to start. Do your research and shop around for inspiration.
The setting The dinnerware needs to be practical yet stylish. Shop around and you’ll be surprised by the reasonably priced products available in varying designs and materials. However, if you don’t want to invest in a new setting, consider upcycling your existing plates by adding a gold rim or design with food-safe paint or ceramic paint pens. Cutlery is equally as important. We like the Host 16-piece set in gold from Domayne (pictured).

Start with a gold placemat and layer with a pale pink dinner plate followed by a white or gold side plate. Top with a pale pink linen napkin in an ornate napkin ring. Here you can incorporate a touch of rose gold or gemstone embellishments. Place gold cutlery on either side of the plate stack and position a selection of glasses including a tumbler, wine and champagne glass or coupe at the top of the placemat. Place alternative gold and pale pink bon bons at the top of the placemat. Incorporate some glass or crystal elements into the centrepiece along with fresh or faux floral arrangements.

Best look Tiles play a huge part in home renovations. To ensure you achieve the best look possible after installation, scrub the tiles with an old toothbrush dipped in a solution of water and vinegar. This will remove grout residue and make the tiles shiny. You can seal the grout with a sealing product about a month after the tiles are laid.

One way to lower a demand on resources, and limit waste, is by reusing existing materials.
Had your house freshly rendered? Keep in mind that the recommendation is to allow the surface to dry for about six weeks before painting. This will prevent the paint from cracking in the future.

s we discussed in last month’s column, sustainability in a home can mean money savings, waste reduction and reducing your home’s impact on the environment. Your home’s orientation and ensuring you build insulation into your property are both big ticket winners in greening your home. But, there is plenty more that you can do to help save the environment and save some money too. 1. Upgrade you appliances to higher energy ratings. 2. Use energy-efficient light bulbs as they last longer, cost less to run and reduce thermal heating in the home. 3. Install solar panels to the max capacity you can. Excess power produced can be sold back to the grid. 4. Double glaze your windows to reduce solar heating and loss. Unglazed windows allow up to 40 per cent heat loss. It can be worse in summer,
accounting for 87 per cent of your home’s heat gain. 5. Add on awnings and blinds, or plant screening flora where needed. 6. Seal gaps that allow cool air to escape. These are mostly found around doors, windows, unsealed vents and skylights. 7. Use efficient taps and showerheads. Savings can be up to 14,000 litres of water per year. A regular showerhead uses about 25 litres per minute and an three-star rated one uses only seven litres per minute. 8. Install water tanks. You won’t believe the savings when it comes to pool top-ups or garden maintenance. 9. Plant a native garden. With water becoming an increasingly precious and expensive resource, water-wise features like native gardens will attract buyer interest. 10. Install a grey-water system. 11. Install drip irrigation.
Proper orientation and insulation to maximise passive cooling and heating, as well as adding these green features to your home, will increase its NABERS energy-efficiency rating. Studies show this adds three per cent of the home’s value with each star rating you gain.

But how much do all these energy savings cost? It’s a big outlay. However, when considering the NABERS system, the added value equates to more. This added property value, coupled with the savings in energy and water usage you will make over the life of the property, is worth the initial cost.
Of course, the reduced carbon footprint your home will produce and the extra interest your home will attract when it comes time to sell, are also two more positives. When you break down a green project such as this, there is one conclusion. It means that green solutions are a good investment both environmentally and economically.

OUTDOOR // Alfresco delight Celebrated Australian landscape architect and television personality Matt Leacy shares his top tips for achieving the ultimate festive outdoor area. Matt suggests taking cues for table settings and Christmas décor from your garden design, particularly if you are eating outdoors. “The overall garden design is something you’ve likely spent a lot of time planning and executing – so continue that theme into your Christmas table plans,’’ he says. “For instance, if you have geometric tiles in your landscape design, look to use table linen with similar patterns.” “Also, consider how you can incorporate plants that feature in your garden. “If, for example, you have structured box hedges, perhaps run a row of smaller box-hedge plants in pots up the middle of your table. Weave in some small
copper-threaded battery-operated bud lighting between them, and choose some festive pots (or spray paint cheap terracotta pots), and you’ll achieve a coordinated yet festive look. “If you live by the beach, chances are your garden has a coastal vibe and design. Tap into this by collecting driftwood and mixing it with raw string materials, hessian and linen “Add a touch of greenery or even some silver or bronze succulents like kalanchoe ‘silver spoons’. “These will provide a great feel and centrepiece for your table.” Matt also suggests using gum leaves tied off with festive ribbon to decorate stair balustrades or benches and furniture. “Wing it – anything that is lush and green from your garden can be used on mass to create a beautiful display.”

tip Be inspired by Australia’s outdoors. Large vases of magnolia leaves with small bud lighting or decorations will make a statement. Eucalyptus leaves can also be laid flat in the middle of the table or used to create a stunning door wreath.
Here are some of our favourite festive looks that incorporate the great outdoors. •Use three vintage vases of varying heights to display greenery as a table centrepiece. •Buy test tubes with a wooden holder (readily available at various homewares stores or online) and arrange fresh gum leaves alongside faux holly for an unusual look. •Give branches and twigs a new lease on life. Spray paint gold, silver or white and use them to decorate the Christmas table.
Festoon lighting “If you want your house aglow with lights at Christmas time – or even just enjoy the fun of festoon lighting across summer – make sure that power cords and sources are discretely covered and integrated into your outdoor space,” Matt says. His tips: • Tape the chords up and run them behind structures and plants where possible. • Use existing structures or plants such as pergolas and topiary trees to hang festive fairy lights or festoon lighting. • Use rope lighting around the inside of garden edges. • Fairy lights are terrific for winding through bushes or shrubs.
