’ve been enthusiastically following the journey of Sunshine Coast couple Jess and Norm who are competing on the current season of Channel Nine’s The Block. Until recently, Jess was better known for her role as one-half of Sea FM’s Barrat and Jess morning radio show. That was before she picked up a hammer, threw on a pair of boots and headed to Melbourne. Now, she and husband Norm are beamed into hundreds of thousands of Australian homes as they compete for The Block’s coveted 2018 title. They have garnered plenty of support and I’m sure all local viewers are cheering them on – we certainly are! Lucky for us, the pair kindly took some time out of their busy schedule to chat and dish out their best renovation secrets. The story is on page eight. Also this month, we continue our annual pool feature with six pages of design tips, green ideas and ideas for creating the perfect outdoor entertainment area or patio. I hope you enjoy. Until next month, happy renovating!

COVER STORY //
SENSATIONAL Artistic touch Art does not have to be confined to the inside of your home. Fun, stylish and colourful works are becoming a popular addition to outdoor areas. Hang a painting or stone art to dress up the space. Alternatively, a splash of paint can turn a dull wall into a piece of art. Paint your outdoor wall in a solid colour and plant shrubs and flowers that complement the paint. Patterned designs also look great.
Say goodbye to winter and hello to spring! And, what better time than now to grab your gardening gloves and get outside? Approach your backyard as a blank canvas and build your design from there. Here are some of our favourite garden styles, which are sure to have you feeling inspired.
DID YOU KNOW? Sustainable gardening has become the focus of landscape architecture and aims to work in with the natural and built environment. The key is to plant vegetation, such as wetland plants, that attract wildlife. According to the Australian Government Home website, ideally these landscapes should maintain themselves and survive by being part of the natural cycles of the local environment.
The checklist The beginning of spring is a vital time in the world of gardening. Here are the top five tasks to ensure your garden grows well through the warmer months. Ready the garden bed. Rake, mulch and add fresh soil. Feed your lawn. Early spring is the ideal time to feed and repair the grass prior to the hot summer months. Aerate the soil and then use a good fertiliser. Prune. Get to work and cut back overhanging tree branches and slow-growing hedges. Trimming back plants will encourage growth. Start planting. Seeds and seedlings should be planted into pots and transferred once they strengthen and the weather warms up. However, plant vegetables straight into the ground. 6 My Renovation | September, 2018

ON TREND – Zen gardens Japanese rock gardens feature succulent plants, raked sand, rock patterns and structures, precisely-trimmed plants and of course water. These gardens promote a sense of wellbeing and aim to reduce stress and improve focus. You don’t need to turn your entire yard into a Zen garden, simply nominate a small section and create your own piece of quiet paradise. Remember that there is no right or wrong, a garden should reflect your own likes and personality.

EXPERT ADVICE //
TIPS & TRICKS FROM THE BLOCK
lthough Norm Hogan has spent the past 25 years in construction, even he was pushed to the limits when he and partner Jess Eva set foot in The Gatwick in Melbourne as The Block contestants. For Jess, renovating the penthouse they chose in the Channel 9 series was truly a baptism of fire. While their journey is still unfolding on the small screen, the Sunshine Coast couple have spoken with My Renovation to share some of the tips and tricks they have learned through their experience. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR FIRSTTIME RENOVATORS? Norm: Have a budget. You need to allocate more money towards kitchens, bathrooms, ensuites and that sort of thing because they literally do just cost more to do because of plumbing, equipment and extra things like waterproofing.
IMAGE: GREG GARDNER PHOTOGRAPHY
breathe easy with

Go into the draw to
Also bear in mind that they do add the most value to your home, so if it comes down to it, steal money you have allocated to other rooms to make sure that these key areas shine. Jess: Try as hard as you can to stick to the budget. If you can find ways to save money with some things, like buying second-hand or waiting for discounts in stores, you can blow out in other areas. It’s also important to create something you love, not just something that is on-trend. That way, when the hard work is done you can love the crap out of it. Also, if you have kids at home, start with their rooms first. We whacked a bit of paint on our son Fred’s room when we got back from The Block and he thought it was the greatest thing he’d ever seen in his life. Renovating a kid’s room first will give you confidence and they will be stoked with everything you do.
This August and September if you decorate with any Brease carpet installed on Comfort CHOICE underlay you will go into the draw to win a Dyson V10 vacuum cleaner a day! To make the Sensitive Choice for your home, visit our showroom or go to choicesflooring.com.au

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT RENOVATING? Norm: Creating something amazing. I think that was probably the highlight of my time on The Block. Jess: Having never renovated before it was amazing to see what you can create, and if you have confidence to do it in your own home it will be amazing. On The Block, we had a week to do a room so we just had to get in there and just do it, but it did show us how to make good, fast decisions.
IMAGE: THE BLOCK
WHAT IS THE MOST STRESSFUL THING ABOUT RENOVATING? Jess: I think having to work with your partner and having to compromise. Creativity is so subjective and you both have an idea of what will work. If you are renovating with your partner, you have to give and take. Norm: I always gave. Jess: No, you didn’t. Pick your battles with what you really want and let your partner think they have won the rest.
Jess and Norm’s first The Block project was to create a child’s bedroom If it was your own house, you might fall into the trap of over-thinking and analysing everything – you could literally spend years on it. So I’d advise just taking the risk, going with your gut, and getting it done. You can catch Jess and Norm on The Block on Channel 9 or follow them on Instagram @normandjess.
TOP TIPS Here are Jess and Norm’s five top tips for completing a successful renovation project. 1. Patience. Don’t go rushing into coming up with a design, take time to get a feel for the room and how you will use it. 2. Research designs and have an idea of what you want. Always have a
starting design in your head and then research to find out how best to execute it. 3. Enjoy it. At the end of the day, you are trying to create a dream renovation, so take your time with it rather than just slapping it together. Bit by bit, you can see your dream come true. 5. If you are renovating with your partner it’s a good idea to have a third party on hand who is willing to come in and mediate for you. Everybody needs a Scotty Cam, so nominate your ‘Scotty’ that can come in once a week to look around and look at what you are doing and give you an objective outsider’s point of view. Open up your relationship to a third person, who might have a designer or builder perspective, and who is comfortable calling it like it is. And, preferably somebody who can give you $10,000 if you present a well-designed room!

The hottest splashbacks

Brick We all know that exposed brick walls look great in the right design, so why not take the concept into the kitchen? We love the combination of this brick wall and small glass splashback.
Marble This timeless and classic material will bring a richness and sophistication to any kitchen. It is also durable and easy-to-clean.
Glass splashbacks need to be toughened. This ensures the material can withstand the heat and it also prevents the glass from shattering into sharp shards should it break. Instead, it will crumble.
Window Open-planned kitchen and living spaces are hugely popular in Australian residential design. Windows and natural light will also give a sense of space, plus there is the added advantage of the outlook.

GROUP THEM Create your own masterpiece by clustering mirrors together to make a stylish statement.
MIRROR MIRROR Loathe them or love them, there is no denying that mirrors have a place in interior design. They can make even the smallest of rooms feel larger, they can open up a narrow hallway, and work as a feature on an otherwise dull wall. Mirrors really are the perfect decorating tool.
WHY WE LOVE MIRRORS Unlike artwork, mirrors can suit any colour palette or theme, and they will still create a focal feature point on your wall.
Get the look If you like this clean and modern look, the Ledin ArtS2 60-centimetre mirror from Harvey Norman is for you.
Do it different Don’t get hung up on the perfect place, and the perfect way, to hang your mirror. Think outside the square – we love this contemporary take on the use of a mirror.
One step further Hoping to make a statement in your newly renovated or decorated home? It doesn’t get much better than this. The Hitachi 788-litre mirror-glass finish French door fridge has to be one of the most sophisticated fridges we have seen. 12 My Renovation | September, 2018

the renovation project will be all the thanks they need. Demolition. Aside from asbestos removal, do as much demo work as you can. Strip tiles, remove vanities, rip up the carpet, dismantle the kitchen cabinets and load skips bins. Electrical. Keeping the electrical points in the same spot will save loads. Salvage. Scour salvage yards for doors and materials you can use on the project. Be sure to check that these finds are not more expensive than buying new. Also, sell or recycle whatever you can from your project. Nambour and Caloundra have good recycling centres. Painting. Painting is one of the best ways to change the look of a space and it is an area where you can save on labour costs. Take your time and be sure to do the job right with good quality equipment and paint.
Flooring. Old carpet or lino dates a room. Rip it up and work with what is underneath. Hire a sander and paint or polish the old flooring. Otherwise, find a cheaper new lino covering. Retain and re-grout tiles, or invest in large area rugs. Bedrooms. Change or paint cupboard doors, replace ceiling fans, change window furnishings to roller blinds and install inexpensive white cotton sheers. Internal exposed brickwork. Cover exposed bricks with easy and inexpensive VJ panels, or paint it. Planning approval. Choose a designer who is experienced in dealing with your local council to avoid extra expense on design work. Neutrals. Maintaining a simple and neutral colour palette across the property will allow savings. A neutral base is also less likely to date and need updating.
Materials. Swap out more expensive materials, such as stone, for cheaper alternatives. Floor stock. Seek out floor stock or factory seconds when it comes to buying tiles, flooring and appliances. Also, don’t buy a fridge that requires plumbing if the plumbing is not already available in the kitchen. Check and check again. Measure everything three times and select your appliances early to confirm dimensions for cabinetry. Be organised. Ensure the builders and other contractors have immediate and complete access to their tasks without delays. A rough schedule of trades for a renovation project includes: demolition, structural, trades rough-in, wall finishes, waterproofing, tiling, fixtures and fittings, joinery, electrical/ plumbing fit-off, painting and landscaping.
Plan. Ensure you have electrical and plumbing plans in place so that nothing is forgotten when workers are on site. Spend now to save later. Installing insulation, rainwater tanks and solar panels as part of your renovation will cost now, but they can return you with massive savings down the track. Budget accordingly and reap the savings. Prioritise. Organise and plan for maximum impact if you are planning on reselling, even if you have a tight budget. Paint the property, change the front fence, paint the front door and change benchtops. You’ll be surprised what a few changes will do. Final tip. If you are competent and able to do so, roll up your sleeves and get to work. Do whatever you can, whenever you can.

INDUSTRY NEWS //
BEST OF THE BEST
hillside sanctuary in New South Wales’ Northern Beaches has been crowned the 2018 Australian House of the Year. Selected by a panel of distinguished industry experts as part of the Houses Awards, Cabbage Tree House by Peter Stutchbury Architecture is a unique, cave-like abode that responds to the landscape and defies the normal residential design elements. Each year, the Houses Awards uncover the best Australian residential architecture and design. The program recognises how existing and emerging professionals embrace architectural challenges. Stuart Vokes, 2018 juror and winner of the 2017 Australian House of the Year, explained, “Australia is witnessing a growing diversity of housing product as a consequence of changing social and economic forces. “Architects are responding with exciting examples of innovative typologies, diverse spatial scales and socially responsible models evident amongst this year’s awarded projects and practices.” “Cabbage Tree House is wonderfully aspirational, beautifully made, and a joyful expression of landscape and one’s place in nature.”
AUSTRALIAN HOUSE OF THE YEAR Cabbage Tree House by Peter Stutchbury Architecture. Photography: Michael Nicholson JURY CITATION The Cabbage Tree House is a remarkable, complete Australian house that authentically and poetically embraces its landscape setting on Sydney’s northern beaches. Anchored in a rock shelf, the masonry structure leans back into the hillside. Internally, the home has cave-like qualities. The scale of the building is broken down into smaller spaces of retreat and seclusion – all with views into vast bushland. Exposed concrete, steel and brickwork gives the impression of permanence and longevity.

The big question Before beginning your renovation, it’s vital that you answer a few big questions – what is your budget, what are your priorities, what projects will be DIY and what projects will you hand over to a professional? Once you have these big questions answered, you will find yourself feeling more confident with clear direction.
Budget friendly My Renovation’s resident project expert Emilia Johnston shares some tricks to saving money. For more from Emilia, turn to page 14. • Improve storage through better layout or cabinets rather than moving walls to make rooms bigger. • Install a sky light instead of windows to increase natural light. • Keep plumbing where it is and redesign around it. • Decide on your fittings and materials early so you can watch for specials. Buying at last minute or in a hurry usually costs more. • Use lookalikes where you can and quality where it counts most. • Buy in bulk when it comes to fans, lights door handles and taps. • Pay with cash if it’s cheaper. • If paying with a credit card make sure you earn points towards products you can buy for the renovation. • Just change cupboard doors and handles. Or, paint them.

Plan ahead Remember that wet weather will hamper construction progress. If possible, plan major renovation projects to take place in the low-season. The less rain, the quicker you’ll be in your new home.
Reuse and recycle
Demolishing? Donate any quality timber or fittings to the local recycling centre, or pop it up for sale.
Like new If the bathroom tiles are looking a little worse for wear but you can’t afford to replace them, simply buy some grout rejuvenation products and get to work. Talk to your local hardware expert for advice.
LIST IT Create a spreadsheet – or even a simple pen-topaper list – of all of your renovation purchases. Include brand, where and when it was purchased and cost. This will enable you to keep track of items as well as your budget.

On trend Treat your patio like an extension to your floorplan and style it with comfort and trends in mind. Use cushions to add pops of colour and select furniture that is practical, yet comfortable.
The design process Before official planning starts, draw up a mud map of how you would like the patio to look. Take into consideration how much space you have and how the patio will be used. Do you need to incorporate an outdoor kitchen? Or, will the design be far simpler?
tip Creating the perfect patio Planning a new patio or outdoor area is the perfect accompaniment to a pool. Of course, there are a number of things to consider during the planning process. You will need to identify the patio’s location, the right design and how you want to utilise it. Do you want to have a covered area or install a shade sail? These are all questions you can work through with your builder.
Your builder should be able to help steer you through the required council regulations.

HOW TO BE ECO-SMART So, you’ve finally decided to fulfill your dream of owning a pool. After all, there is nothing quite like enjoying a cool dip on a hot summer’s day. However, it is also important for pool owners to think about reducing their carbon footprint. So, how do you balance your leisure needs with your environmental concerns? Most importantly, how do you make sure your pool is eco-friendly? Sean Lynch from Pool Fab has listed his top five ways to ensure your pool is environmentallyfriendly. Visit poolfab.com.au for more.
Use a robot cleaner Robotic pool cleaners reduce the amounts of chemical additives you use while improving the circulation of the pool water. They also reduce the frequency of pool filter changes and are more efficient in cleaning the pool than traditional suction cleaners. To really make it an eco-friendly pool, you could always install one that runs on solar panels.
Use a solar heater A solar heating system for your pool is cost effective to install and it utilises the sun to warm the water during the cooler months. Installing a solar system will increase your swimming season without increasing your electricity costs. Covering your pool will also reduce heat loss, water evaporation, chemical use and cleaning costs.
Choose an eco-smart freshwater pool Freshwater pool chlorination systems significantly reduce your chemical use, require less maintenance and use less electricity while creating a heathier, safer, freshwater swimming pool experience.

Choose a carbonneutral builder Talk to the experts about carbon offsetting. Before embarking on a project, Pool Fab calculates the total amount of carbon in your pool construction. They then offset the carbon that is produced by planting native trees as part of a bush regeneration program.
For style and strength choose COLORBOND® Steel
Choose energy-efficient equipment New eco-smart pools include variable speed pumps which use 70 per cent less electricity in the operation of pool systems. The use of glass media filters also reduces backwash frequency and therefore water consumption. These pumps and filters will save you money while reducing your impact on the environment.

finishing touches Advice and ideas to turn your renovation into a home.
tip THE RIGHT BALANCE The rise of minimalism interior design has come with an ever-increasing focus on sustainable living. The key is balance – you don’t have to strip your style right back. And, keeping home interiors simple doesn’t mean you have to be dull. It’s okay to inject a little personality and warmth. Choose one or two colours that you love and allow those hues to shine through with select décor pieces.
The key to minimalism design is showcasing an artistic-based functional design and floorplan. Remember, less is more.
LET IT SHINE Small pops of colour can work in minimalism design – just keep it to one or two colours and use sparingly. This stool and vase are the perfect combo. They are from Things of Metal and Wood.
Integrate Industrial, rustic, minimalist, modern and Scandinavian styles to create your kinfolk dream interior – LOFT Furniture Noosa has it all. Custom orders welcome. Australia wide shipping.
