FROM THE EDITOR As someone who spends a lot of time writing and researching about colour, design and construction, I always look forward to the annual HIA Housing Awards. It gives us permission to snoop inside some of the Sunshine Coast’s best-planned, -designed and -built homes. And this year did not disappoint. From a spectacular waterfront mansion to a 1980s beachhouse transformation, the projects are worth celebrating. Turn to page 14 to see some of the winners for yourself. This month, in our Lessons Learnt story, we explore ways to plan home design for the years ahead, rather than simply the ‘now’. Plus, in our outdoor pages, we share tips on how to summer-proof your garden for the warmer months ahead (I can hardly believe that it’s almost that time of year!). I’m sure you’ll find plenty of inspiration. Enjoy.

BETTER STONE FEATURE //

A NEW ERA IN STONE

As colour and texture make their way back into Australian homes, Sunshine Coast business Better Stone is embracing a fresh approach to surface design and preparing to open a new collaborative showroom.

C

olour is making a comeback in home design, with Better Stone owner Lauren Latham seeing more homeowners move beyond traditional neutral palettes in favour of expressive surfaces, textures and finishes. The Sunshine Coast-based, female-founded business launched at the end of 2023, during a period of major change in the stone industry following the introduction of new silica regulations. Rather than viewing the industry shift as a setback, Lauren saw an opportunity to create a safer, more considered alternative for homeowners and industry professionals. “I have worked in the industry through my partner and saw the challenges the stone industry was facing following the silica ban,” Lauren says. “There was limited stock, poor products at the start of the ban, unhealthy and unsafe products, and I wanted to create something better.” Lauren says the changing

6 My Home | November 2026

landscape pushed Better Stone to rethink traditional approaches and create a more considered experience. “Rather than seeing this as a setback, we embraced it as an opportunity to pivot, innovate and create something even more valuable for our clients and industry partners,” she says. Better Stone’s point of difference, she says, is its approach to creating surfaces that combine unique design with safer product choices. “Our colour range is very unique. We mimic a lot more natural colours, and due to the formulation, we get a brighter and more interesting colour range,” she adds. “We focus on safer products that are free from cobalt, silica and contain fewer synthetic materials.” Better Stone has quickly established itself across Queensland, with Lauren describing the business as having the only product of its kind currently available in Australia. As part of its next stage of growth, Better Stone is preparing to open a

new premium design hub and showroom on the Sunshine Coast in November. Rather than being simply a place to view samples, the showroom has been designed as a collaborative space where designers, cabinet makers, builders and homeowners can work together to bring projects to life. Lauren says the idea was to create a more seamless experience for people

making important design decisions. “The new showroom will feature large-format displays, curated colour collections, design inspiration zones and real-world applications to help bring projects to life,” she explains. The space will also bring together complementary businesses, including companies specialising in cabinetry, tiles, tapware and sinks, allowing customers to explore a My Weekly Preview

wider range of selections in one location. “We’re excited to welcome customers to the new Better Stone Showroom,” Lauren says. “There are not too many large spaces including stone slabs on the Coast that offer collaboration or where there are multiple kitchen and bathroom displays in one space. We also wanted our customers to have a better experience from start to finish while building their dream spaces.” There will be a launch event on January 16, where visitors will have the chance to explore the new space and enter to win a one-of-a-kind Better Stone coffee table. The move represents another milestone for a business built by a woman in an industry that has traditionally been male-dominated. Lauren says building Better Stone has been tough but rewarding, particularly when navigating outdated perceptions within the sector. “It has been challenging but very empowering,” she adds. “There are still many old-school mentalities in the industry, and tackling that over time has been very challenging and still can be.” Lauren says her focus is on

building trust through honest communication, customer service and continually improving the business. “My ethos is to be one per cent better every day in all aspects of business,” she tells My Home. “Whether it’s user experience, order experience, customer service, brand aesthetics… I’m trying to constantly improve based on feedback, so believe I have gained trust in my clients over time following this.” As homeowners continue to

rethink their interiors, Lauren says design trends are shifting towards more personality, with texture and colour becoming increasingly popular. “While whites will always be timeless, people are choosing colour not just in stone, but also in tapware, cabinetry and other design elements. “Customers are also selecting more honed and leathered finishes to add extra depth to their designs.” For Lauren, the future of home design is about creating spaces that reflect individuality while making the selection process easier for customers. Through Better Stone’s new showroom and evolving product range, she hopes to create a place where ideas, materials and expertise come together. The Better Stone showroom open day will be held on Saturday, January 16, from 9am to 2pm at 173 Meridan Way, Meridan Plains. The event will include free food from 12pm to 2pm, coffee, refreshments, raffles and games, with guests able to enter the draw to win a free Better Stone table. For more information, visit betterstone.com.au.

FIVE THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING STONE 1. Consider colour and design Stone is a major feature in a kitchen, bathroom or living space, so choose a colour and pattern that complements your cabinetry, flooring and other finishes. 2. Think about the finish Polished, honed and textured finishes can create different looks. A honed or leathered finish can add depth and a more tactile feel to a space. 3. Look beyond appearance Consider the performance, composition and safety of the product, as well as how it is made and installed. 4. Choose a surface that suits Think about how the space will be used day-to-day, including cleaning, maintenance requirements and durability. 5. Work with experts early Visiting a showroom and speaking with designers, fabricators or suppliers can help you understand your options.

tip Introduce bright blues through a velvet cushion, patterned ceramics or a colourful vase. Keep larger furnishings neutral and repeat the blue in two or three places to create a coordinated look.

A fresh look at the hues making themselves at home.

COBALT BLUE

Bright, bold and full of personality, cobalt blue can give a neutral room an instant lift.

HOW TO USE IT

Haymes Paint – Tidal Deep

1. Start small: A cobalt cushion, ceramic vase or piece of artwork can add a burst of colour without changing the entire room. Against white or cream furnishings, even just one accessory can make an impact.

PRODUCT ALERT Abstract pottery meets unique texture in the creation of the Fayla vase. It is available in three colours, pictured here in blue. It’s from Elenorra.

2. Find the balance: Pair cobalt blue with warm timber, woven textures and soft neutrals to stop the colour from feeling too stark. For a fun combo, introduce a small amount of orange, red or buttery yellow. 3. Make a statement: If you’re ready for a bigger change, try painting a single piece of furniture, such as a sideboard or bedside table, in the shade.

paint it! A rich, deep blue that brings a sense of sophistication and drama to a room. Ideal for feature walls, cabinetry or smaller accent pieces, this moody shade pairs beautifully with crisp whites, warm timber and brushed brass finishes for a timeless look.

study spaces later, while a home office may eventually become a guest room or bedroom. Planning for these changes doesn’t mean building in unused rooms. It means giving existing rooms the size, storage and services needed to take on another role in the future.

The same applies to plumbing. Designing a multi-purpose room near existing pipes and services can make it easier to add a small kitchenette or ensuite in the future. AVOID OVERLY FIXED JOINERY Built-in joinery can make excellent use of space, but it should not limit how a room can be used. For example, a built-in desk running across an entire wall may suit a child now but prevent the room from accommodating a larger bed later. Where future use is uncertain, combine permanent storage with freestanding pieces that can be moved or replaced.

GIVE ROOMS A SECOND PURPOSE A flexible room should be more than an empty box. A study that may become a bedroom will need privacy, a suitable window, storage and enough uninterrupted wall space for a bed. Likewise, a second living area may later work as a teenage retreat, hobby room or accommodation for visiting family if it can be closed off from the main living zone. MAKE ACCESS EASIER Small decisions made during the build can improve comfort later. A step-free entry, wider circulation spaces and a bathroom with a generous shower are useful for prams, injuries and ageing, not just permanent mobility needs. In two-storey homes, consider whether there is a room and bathroom downstairs that could support singlelevel living if required.

BUILD IN USEFUL INFRASTRUCTURE Future needs may involve more technology, home-based work or electric vehicles. Allowing suitable space in the switchboard, installing conduits where future cabling may be needed and planning power in the garage can make later upgrades less disruptive – and less costly.

WORTH CONSIDERING

“Small decisions made during the build can improve comfort later”

Ask one question of every room on the plan: “what else could this space become?” If the answer requires major structural work, consider whether a small change now could make it more adaptable into the future.

A BOLD MOVE Hoping to bring personality to your bathroom renovation? The secret to making a statement without overwhelming the space is knowing when to let one feature do the talking.

B

athrooms don’t have to be all white tiles and understated finishes. A splash of colour or a geometric pattern can transform an otherwise simple space into something with plenty of personality. The key is balance. Rather than introducing bold design elements across every surface, choose one area to make a statement and maintain a more neutral approach for the rest of the bathroom. Patterned floor tiles are a particularly great choice, as they draw the eye without competing with the other features in the

room. Geometric designs, from traditional motifs to contemporary shapes, can introduce movement and visual interest. For those feeling adventurous, colours such as emerald green, terracotta, cobalt blue or mustard can create a memorable feature. A tiled splashback, shower wall or recessed niche are great ways to experiment without committing to an entire room of colour. In terms of balancing with neutrals, aim for soft whites, warm greys, natural stone finishes and timber-look cabinetry to provide contrast while allowing the pattern or colour to remain the focal point. Fixtures and fittings also play a part. Simple tapware, mirrors and accessories help avoid visual clutter, particularly in smaller bathrooms. It’s worth considering how different finishes will work together in natural and artificial light. Always view tile samples in the space before making a final decision. Remember, a bold bathroom doesn’t need every surface to compete for attention.

The team at Elite Renovations has brought personality to this bathroom renovation with striking geometric tiles across the floor and splashback. Neutral wall tiles, timber-look cabinetry and a stone-look benchtop balance the bold pattern, creating a contemporary space with plenty of character. Visit eliterenovationsolutions.com.au

BUILDING A CAREER From her first home build to a varied career in construction, Rachel Knox has found her place at Dwyer Quality Homes, combining her passion for design with a practical approach.

THE WOMEN BEHIND THE BUILD

W

omen account for fewer than five per cent of trades workers in Australia’s construction industry, highlighting a persistent gender divide in one of the country’s largest workforces. According to Master Builders Australia’s analysis of Australian Bureau of Statistics data, women represented 13.6 per cent of the nation’s building and construction workforce in August 2025 – around 180,000 of the industry’s 1.32 million workers. In Queensland, women accounted for 14.2 per cent of the workforce. Nationally, that figure dropped to just 4.5 per cent among technicians and trades workers. The figures come as Australia’s construction industry continues to face skills shortages, placing greater importance on attracting and retaining workers from a broader range of backgrounds. Infrastructure Australia’s 2025 Infrastructure Market Capacity Report identified workplace culture as an ongoing factor affecting the retention of women in construction. It highlighted initiatives focused on mentoring, flexible working arrangements and improving workplace conditions as potential ways to increase participation.

20 My Home | November 2026

But women’s contribution to the broader home and building industries extends well beyond traditional trades. From design and project coordination to construction administration, sales and client relationships, women work across the many stages involved in bringing a home from concept to completion. Their career paths are equally varied. Some enter through formal qualifications and industry training, while others bring experience from different professions. Despite the opportunities, challenges remain, including overcoming assumptions about their expertise, balancing work and family responsibilities and establishing themselves in traditionally male-dominated workplaces. This edition of My Home celebrates Sunshine Coast women working across the home and building industries, exploring their career journeys, professional achievements and the challenges they have navigated. Their experiences offer an insight into the people, skills and decisions behind the region’s industry.

W

hen Rachel Knox built her first home in 2012, her enjoyment of studying floor plans and designing finishes sparked an interest that would lead to a new career. With a background in hairdressing, Rachel found herself drawn to the building process. She secured her first construction industry job later that year and has since worked across a range of departments. Now the office administrator at Dwyer Quality Homes, she handles a range of roles, from accounts, construction and handover administration as well as social media, while also working as a building consultant for investment and display homes. No two days look quite the same. Alongside invoices and social media content, she works on colour selections for covenants and specifications for investment clients, helping streamline the decisions involved in a new build. Rachel says communication is central to the role. “I think communication is a huge part of working in construction,” she says. “Being approachable and knowledgeable allows trades and supervisors to feel comfortable communicating their concerns, ideas or needs.” Designing display homes has been among her biggest challenges, requiring creativity, an understanding of emerging products and close collaboration with trades to ensure ideas can be delivered.

RACHEL KNOX Office administrator, Dwyer Quality Homes

She also encourages clients to think beyond inspiration photos to how they will use their homes. “I enjoy helping them look beyond the aesthetics and think about how a space will actually function for them.” Rachel acknowledges women still face assumptions about their expertise in construction. She believes consistency and the way people conduct themselves can help establish credibility. Balancing her career with motherhood has been another challenge, made easier by an understanding workplace. Having joined Dwyer Quality Homes in 2021, she has learnt to adapt when plans change and focus on solutions. For Rachel, the reward is seeing a team effort come together - and helping clients feel supported throughout the process. Visit dqh.com.au. My Weekly Preview

TASH MENNIE Operations manager, Thompson Sustainable Homes

FAST FIVE What do you love most about your job?

LEADING THE WAY Thompson Sustainable Homes’ operations manager Tash Mennie is proving strong leadership in construction comes down to knowledge, communication and bringing people together.

F

or more than a decade, Tash Mennie has helped shape the way Thompson Sustainable Homes delivers quality residential projects across southeast Queensland. As operations manager, Tash has developed a deep understanding of the many moving parts involved in creating homes for first home buyers, couples, families, downsizers and investors. Her focus is not only on processes and project delivery, but also on the people behind every build. “Construction is such a diverse industry and there’s always something new to learn or a challenge to work through,” she says. “I enjoy the problem-solving side of things, working with different people and seeing the end result of what everyone has worked so hard to achieve. What started as a job has turned into a career that I genuinely enjoy.” In her role, Tash works across multiple areas of the business to ensure teams, systems and projects remain aligned. “No two days are ever the same, which is probably one of the things I enjoy most about the role,” she says. “My day can involve anything from reviewing project programs and meeting with our teams to resolving operational challenges, improving processes or planning for upcoming projects.” In an industry traditionally dominated by men, Tash has found effective leadership is less about fitting a mould and more about creating

My Weekly Preview

strong connections, earning trust and bringing people together. “I think one of my biggest strengths is my ability to look at the bigger picture while still understanding the finer details. “Construction involves a lot of moving parts and being able to communicate effectively, manage competing priorities and bring different teams together is incredibly important. I also think it’s important to recognise that you don’t need to be the loudest person in the room to be effective. “I’ve always believed that respect is earned through your knowledge, work ethic and the way you treat people, regardless of whether you’re male or female.” Tash says overcoming challenges has been an important part of her professional growth, particularly as the industry continues to change. “Over the years, I’ve learnt that you can’t control every situation, but you can control how you respond to it,” she says. For women considering a future in construction, Tash believes the industry offers opportunities well beyond traditional roles, with pathways into leadership, operations, project management and design. “Don’t be intimidated by the fact that it’s traditionally been a male-dominated industry,” she says. “Be confident in your abilities, ask questions and don’t be afraid to put yourself forward for opportunities. Be willing to learn, work hard and back yourself.”

The people and the variety. No two days are the same, and I love being able to work through challenges with our team and see the results of everyone’s hard work. What is one tip you have for Coast homeowners who are building or renovating? Do your research and make sure you understand what’s included in your building contract before signing. It’s much easier to make decisions during the planning and design stages than to change things once construction has commenced. What trend do you love most in home design/build? I love the focus on functional, lowmaintenance homes that make clever use of space. Good design doesn’t necessarily mean having a bigger home; it’s about making every square metre work. What’s the favourite feature in your own home? The flow from the inside to outside entertaining area and lots of natural light. If you could introduce one new feature in your own home, what would it be? Raked ceilings. Visit thompsonsustainablehomes.com.au. My Home | November 2026 21

POOLFAB FEATURE //

A FRESH WAY TO SWIM Poolfab Pool + Landscape Creations managing director Sean Lynch says freshwater pool systems offer more than a refreshing swim, with reduced chemical use, lower running costs and benefits for the environment. Visit poolfab.com.au.

T

here’s nothing quite like diving into a swimming pool on a hot Sunshine Coast day. But for some swimmers, the strong chlorine smell, irritated eyes and dry skin that can follow are less appealing. Naked Pools offers an alternative to traditional chlorine and saltwater systems, creating a swimming experience designed to feel closer to fresh water while reducing the environmental impact of pool maintenance. The Australian-designed and manufactured system uses a combination of copper and silver minerals and a small amount of chlorine generated during the sanitisation process to keep the water clean and clear. The result is water with a softer feel and significantly lower salt levels than conventional saltwater pools. Freshwater chlorination systems can improve the swimming experience while reducing reliance on

added chemicals. Eco-smart systems such as these can also help lower operating costs and reduce the amount of chemicals released into the local environment. For families, one of the biggest attractions is comfort. The system is designed to minimise the strong chlorine smell and irritation sometimes associated with swimming, making it an appealing option for those with sensitive skin. There are potential benefits beyond the swimming experience, too. According to the manufacturer, Naked Pools can deliver savings of up to 50 per cent on running costs compared with conventional systems, depending on pool conditions and operation. Freshwater treatment can also form part of a broader approach to environmentally conscious pool ownership. Energy-efficient variablespeed pumps, LED lighting and pool covers are among the features worth considering to help reduce energy

Image: Poolfab Pool + Landscape Creations consumption and ongoing costs. The system’s lower salt and chlorine levels may also help reduce wear on pool equipment and surrounding finishes. Ease of use is another consideration. Automated controls manage the sanitisation process, while a self-cleaning feature helps reduce maintenance. Regular water testing and balancing are still required. And homeowners don’t necessarily need a new pool to make

the switch. The Naked freshwater system can be retrofitted to existing pools and spas, offering another option for those considering an upgrade. For Sunshine Coast homeowners looking to make the most of their backyard this summer, a freshwater pool system could be a refreshing change for both the family and the environment. EDIT

SUMMER-PROOF YOUR GARDEN Hot days and sudden storms can take a toll on even the most established gardens. A little preparation now can help plants stay healthy and outdoor spaces look their best throughout summer.

N

ovember is a good time to give the garden some attention before the full force of the Sunshine Coast’s summer arrives. Rising temperatures, sunshine and the prospect of heavy downpours can create challenging conditions for lawns, garden beds and potted plants. While some plants thrive in the heat and humidity, others can struggle when the weather changes quickly. Soil can dry out between rain cycles, containers can become excessively hot and poorly drained garden beds can remain waterlogged after a storm. The good news is that preparing a garden for summer doesn’t necessarily require a major overhaul. Small changes to watering routines, soil care and plant

positioning can make a difference. Start by looking at which areas receive the strongest afternoon sun, where water tends to collect after rain and which plants struggled through the previous summer. Observing these points can help identify where extra shade, improved drainage or a change in planting might be needed. It’s also worth considering how much maintenance you realistically want to undertake. Choosing plants suited to local conditions and grouping those with similar watering needs can reduce the work required to keep a garden looking its best. A few practical improvements now can help create a healthier, more resilient garden that is easier to enjoy during the warmer months.

MULCH MATTERS One of the simplest ways to prepare garden beds for summer is to refresh the mulch. Organic materials such as sugar cane, bark and wood chips help reduce moisture loss, protect soil from heat and discourage weeds. The ideal depth depends on the material, so avoid piling it on too thickly. Keep mulch clear of plant stems and tree trunks to reduce the risk of rot, particularly during periods of heavy rain.

WATER SMARTER, NOT MORE As temperatures rise, it’s tempting to water the garden more frequently, but understanding what plants actually need is the best approach. Check the soil beneath the surface before reaching for the hose, as the top layer can appear dry while moisture remains around the roots. Water early in the morning to minimise evaporation and allow foliage to dry during the day. If you have an irrigation system, check for blocked drippers, leaks and areas receiving too much or too little water. Adjust watering after rainfall rather than following the same routine regardless of the weather.

GIVE PLANTS A BREAK Not every plant appreciates the heavy summer sun. Potted plants are particularly vulnerable because their roots can heat up and dry out more quickly than those growing in garden beds. Move sensitive pots into a position with protection from harsh afternoon sun, ensuring they still receive the light they need. Temporary shade cloth can also help protect young plants while they establish. When choosing new plants, consider their mature size, preferred conditions and ability to tolerate both dry spells and summer rain.

PREPARE FOR THE DOWNPOURS Summer gardening isn’t just about managing heat. Heavy rain can wash away mulch, damage delicate plants and expose drainage problems. Clear leaves and debris from outdoor drains and check that water can flow away from garden beds and paved areas. Make sure pots have adequate drainage holes and aren’t left sitting in water. If established trees have damaged or potentially dangerous branches, arrange an assessment by a qualified arborist rather than attempting major pruning yourself. Avoid working waterlogged soil, as this can cause compaction and further damage its structure.

THE SUMMER GARDEN CHECKLIST A little preparation for the warmer months: Remove weeds competing with plants for moisture and nutrients. Refresh mulch in garden beds and around established plants. Keep mulch away from plant stems and tree trunks. Check irrigation systems for leaks and blocked drippers. Adjust watering schedules to suit rainfall and soil moisture. Move heat-sensitive pots away from harsh afternoon sun. Check pots and planters have adequate drainage. Clear leaves and debris from garden drains. Remove dead flowers and damaged growth where appropriate. Raise the mower height to help protect lawns during hot weather. Check plants for signs of pests and disease. Secure lightweight pots and garden accessories before storms. Assess overgrown or damaged trees for potential hazards. Choose plants suited to the local climate and conditions when replacing struggling varieties.
