LIFE AFTER CITY HALL

Mark Jamieson has stepped down as Sunshine Coast mayor after 12 years but retirement is still a little way off. WORDS: Ingrid Nelson.

It feels like quite some ago now that former Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson announced he would not be contesting the next council election.

However, it was only as of last week, after 12 years in office, that Mr Jamieson officially finished his duties and is now looking forward to spending more time with his wife Laurel, his children and granddaughter.

“It’s certainly a new experience,” he says. “Going from a life where you are driven by your diary to opening your diary and there not being much there. It’s a bit different, but I welcome that and I certainly have no regrets about my decision to not re-contest.”

As he reflects on his lengthy tenure in Sunshine Coast Council’s top job,

Immanuel Gardens Aged Care

Mr Jamieson says he is proud of his achievements – in particular, his ability to develop a cohesive team capable of making the tough decisions when necessary for the greater good of the community.

“I’m proud of the fact I was able to lead a team that was generally united,” he says.

“We were able to come together as a group and recognise that by working together, we could achieve great outcomes. Without that, you can’t really do much else.”

During his lengthy tenure, the former mayor has worked with seven prime ministers, four premiers and faced some very challenging times since he was elected in 2012.

“In 2012, off the back of the global financial crisis, which we were still feeling the effects of, business confidence on the

Sunshine Coast was zero,” he says.

“The Australian dollar was buying 1.10 US (dollars). The investment sector had closed the door.

“In 2013, our household incomes on the Sunshine Coast were 22 per cent lower than the state average. Today, we are at the state average and likely to exceed that in the future. We have high employment levels on the Sunshine Coast and so much opportunity for our younger generation.

“These are remarkable turnarounds that were initiated as part of the Regional Economic Strategy. They were in different ways supplemented by state and federal governments, but this is an example of local government really doing its best work to ensure that families on the Sunshine Coast could stay together, so they wouldn’t have to pack their kids off to jobs somewhere else in the state.

“Anyone who was living here a decade ago who was bemoaning the opportunity for decent work that paid well, these days have nothing to complain about – it’s all here.”

During Mr Jamieson’s leadership, he has been praised for his innovation and growth mindset, and at times criticised for overspending.

However, he says: “People look to council for almost everything, despite the fact that $5-6 billion leaves the Sunshine Coast in the form of federal taxes, $2.5 billion to state government, while the Sunshine collects $350 million by comparison.”

Mr Jamieson says from an economic point of view, his biggest achievements include the Sunshine Coast Airport’s $350 million new runway project, the development of the Maroochydore City Centre, the City Hall, the international broadband submarine cable, and the first grid-connected solar farm on the Australian

mainland (at Valdora).

The former mayor has also been praised for his environmental advocacy, and says he is particularly proud of establishing the Sunshine Coast Biosphere and the planning around the Blue Heart on the North Maroochy flood plain.

“Our Land for Wildlife program is the largest in the country,” he says.

“We own the biggest conservation estate of any council in South East Queensland through land that’s been acquired by the environment levy. We now own in excess of 7000 hectares of land. When I was elected, we had 2500 hectares.”

Mr Jamieson has also been at the helm during a time of unprecedented growth in the region and says he and his team has worked hard to ensure future generations can afford to live and work here.

“There was a time when the Sunshine Coast was at risk of becoming the biggest retirement village in Queensland, and that is not being derogatory,” he says.

“People who were retired from areas like Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane were arriving with pockets full of money through their super or sale of their home and that puts them at a big advantage to buy property on the Sunshine Coast.

“We have worked hard with the building and development sector so more people could afford to live and work here with a salary that is at least with the state average.”

Mr Jamieson says he has really enjoyed his time as mayor and the opportunity to serve the people of our region.

“It has been a great honour and privilege,” he says.

“While I’m not necessarily retiring entirely, I have some other interests that will keep me busy and I look forward to doing lots of nice long walks on the beach or the hinterland and making the most of the amazing lifestyle here on the Coast.”

Sinfully thrilling Did you know?

Roller coasters were invented to distract Americans from sin. In the 1880s, hosiery businessman LaMarcus Thompson hated that Americans were tempted by hedonistic places such as saloons and brothels. So, he set out to straighten up one of the most-immoral places he could think of: Coney Island in New York. There, he built America’s first roller coaster to give New Yorkers some good, clean fun – away from seedier pastimes.

OUR TIME IN THE SUN ON SURF SPORTS STAGE

Splashes of colour ebb and flow on the sands and in the waves as far as the eye can see. First-timers thrust into the thick of the action are left gobsmacked by the sea of shade tents spanning competition areas, the kaleidoscope of caps, togs and uniforms of the 314 affiliated surf life saving clubs, and countless skis and boards scattered on grassy areas and stacked high in trailers.

Three Sunshine Coast clubs are set to host the largest lifesaving competition event in the world. WORDS: Shirley Sinclair. and Mooloolaba clubs will host The Aussies from April 13-21. And whether you are a competitor, manager, handler, coach, parent, official or spectator, you can’t help but be impressed by the sheer numbers of people and craft.

In stark contrast is the army of officials sprinkled throughout: all dressed in crisp white and each with a specific job to do – from marshalling under the competition tents and recording results to ordering athletes to “face the water” before firing the starter’s gun.

The annual Australian Surf Life Saving Championships – the ultimate test of skills in and out of the water – is a sporting spectacle like no other.

Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) reports that with more than 480 beach and ocean events and in excess of 8000 athletes, ‘The Aussies’ is the largest surf lifesaving event in the world.

The 2024 instalment is the Sunshine Coast’s chance to shine on and off the podium, because for the first time since 2021, Alexandra Headland, Maroochydore

It can be a little overwhelming and humbling but oh-so-exciting and exhilarating. Surf sports competitors learn to put all emotions aside, however, to channel adrenaline into performance and focus on the task at hand, race by race.

And someone who understands that better than most is elite ironwomanturned-coach, Maddy Dunn.

The former Kawana Waters nipper experienced her first Aussies in the Under-15s for Mooloolaba at the 2010 titles at Kurrawa on the Gold Coast. And she distinctly recalls the step up to the national competition ranks.

“It was tough racing every day for five days and was a new experience,” says Maddy, who competed for Northcliffe on the Gold Coast in the Nutri-Grain Ironwoman Series.

“It was so different from state titles, as suddenly we were racing against so many more clubs and from places I had never heard of.

“It was great to meet new people and

definitely helped spark my love for competitive racing.”

The Aussies is the pinnacle of surf sports competition in the nation and the final test of the annual lifesaving season in individual and teams events.

The events mark the culmination of all the early-morning and late-afternoon training sessions, the weights work and regimented nutrition plans, the sacrifices in social life.

Expectations run high but the results

at previous carnivals, branch and state titles mean little when Mother Nature comes into play.

“Aussies is about team work, testing yourself and knowing that another season is coming to a close,” Maddy says.

“To win a medal at Aussies gives you a sense of pride that all that training has paid off and you know that you have given it all.

“Any Aussie medal is something everyone should treasure. Board rescue

was always my favourite and resulted in a number of gold medals over the years.

“I’ve been lucky to be around Aussies for 14 years as a competitor and now coach. But winning team medals with friends and training partners after a long year training together has to be the most rewarding result.

“Every athlete racing has completed around 45 weeks of training. Aussies is the final time for the year you will get to race.

“It’s always a huge excitement and relief when it’s over.

“The best thing is, no matter the result, you will always be able to laugh and joke and celebrate at the trailers on Sunday with everyone.”

Now aged 29 and mother of six-month-old son Koa, Maddy’s transition from competitor to coach has been helped by the support of her extended family, and especially husband and former elite surf ski paddler Nick Gale, who is now director of surf sports at Mooloolaba.

The Sunshine Coast Grammar teacher aide sees her new surf sports role as a way of giving back to the volunteer movement that has been so much a part of her life.

“This will be my third season as a coach,” she says.

“Aussies is a lot more relaxed these days, but you don’t get to sit under the tent that often.

“I seem to spend a lot of time drinking coffees while pacing up and down the sand.

“It’s still so exciting and a great time to be involved in the sport. Aussies is a great week and being a part of it in any way is extremely rewarding.

“A lot has changed (for me). I have traded my 4.20am swimming alarm for a six-month-old waking up.

“I am still so fortunate that I can jump in with the squad on the board when I can and even helped with teams throughout the year.

“But my competitive days are definitely over.

“I’m very grateful that I can now give

back with coaching and pass on the skills and knowledge that I gained from the great coaches like Michael King and Naomi Flood.

“I would love to keep coaching and helping the youth of our sport.

“I feel it’s extremely important to keep the kids involved and keep breeding the next generation of athletes to help grow and support this great sport.

“At the end of the day, our core focus is providing a safe beach for the public to swim at. And surf sports helps us do that.”

Many Sunshine Coast competitors from the 14 affiliated surf life saving clubs, servicing 15 patrolled beaches from Rainbow to Redcliffe Peninsula, have arrived early to train in the competition areas in preparation for The Aussies.

Maddy says Maroochydore is a great beach to race at, but it can be tricky, so being able to spend as much time training there beforehand will be a huge advantage for local athletes.

Right now, she is focused on bringing out the best in her own squad.

“We are pretty lucky at Mooloolaba: we have a young and small squad,” she says.

“We are really looking forward to a home Aussies.

“Dominique Stitt has had a great season with her first Nutri-Grain Series under her belt.

She is growing in confidence and will be one to watch.

“Grace Thomas in Under-17 has been putting in the hard yards and is a great board paddler.

“For the young athletes, if you want it, you need to work hard to get the results and you will need to make sacrifices along the way.

“In Under-15 and my first year in Under-17, I was flat out making a final at Aussies. But I had the best time under the tent, and racing in team events was so much fun.

“Stay hydrated, focused, listen to your coaches and parents and enjoy the week. I would love to be out there racing.”

COAST LOSES A GIVING SOUL

Harry Reed is being remembered for his philanthropic work, as much as his development and sporting legacy. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

Tributes are flowing for a Sunshine Coast man whose influence has been felt throughout the community for his development, sporting and charitable endeavours.

Harry Reed is being remembered after he died on March 26, aged 77.

Mr Reed was the founder of the Reed Property Group, a former chairman of the Sunshine Coast Turf Club and a patron

of the region’s health charity, Wishlist, since 2007.

His profound philanthropic involvement in Wishlist for more than two decades culminated in him building an accommodation house to keep loved ones close to Nambour Hospital.

Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe is paying tribute to Mr Reed, whom she describes as a charismatic man and gentle giant with a heart of gold.

“Harry was larger than life – an imposing figure, with a deep, raspy voice and a charismatic air,” Mr Rowe says.

“Quietly spoken, he didn’t say much but when he spoke, you listened.

“Initially, I was nervous in his presence, but I soon discovered a gentle giant with a heart of gold and all the time in the world for the right cause.

“He believed very much in giving back to a community that had supported he and his family, and he did so generously.

“He was a dignified, respectful gentleman who loved his family and adored his wife Margaret. They’re a love story for the ages.”

Mr Reed and his wife contributed significantly to the $22 million Wishlist has directed to support families needing local hospitals, including the building of Reed House.

“In 2006, Harry contributed to a $20,000 ventilator for the ICU at Nambour Hospital, and then asked Wishlist what he could ‘build’ to help local health services,” Ms Rowe says.

“Accommodation to support patients, those travelling for treatment and those needing family close by to help their recovery was the priority need at the time.

“In 2007, Harry directed two years of Reed Charity Foundation’s fundraising efforts, and the generous contribution of

contractors and suppliers of RCQ to building Reed House: a 20-room, threestorey emergency accommodation centre adjacent to Nambour Hospital.

“Since opening in 2009, the facility has played host to more than 22,150 guests needing to be close to Nambour or the Sunshine Coast University Hospital for medical treatment – or to be close to someone in hospital.

“Harry’s personal contribution to the project is reported to have been more than $1 million.”

The Reeds have been generous supporters of 92.7 MIX FM’s Give Me 5, the Wishlist Spring Carnival and Wishlist Giving Day, and their contribution to Wishlist’s work totals more than $5 million.

Through the Reed Charity Foundation, which wound up in 2009, the Reeds directed more than $7 million to charity projects locally and overseas.

“These projects include Reed House (to which the family donated $1 million personally), a hydrotherapy pool at Currimundi Special School, the Nambour Hear and Say Centre,” Ms Rowe says.

“They also rebuilt an orphanage in India devastated by tsunami.”

Ms Rowe says Mr Reed’s legacy goes beyond his contributions to Wishlist, shaping the development

“So many local charities were the beneficiary of his generosity – and so many families will continue to benefit from his legacy of kindness.”

Local identity Ashley Robinson has been friends with the Reeds since they first came to the region in the 1980s.

He says Mr Reed was a “generous, giving soul” who taught him the true meaning of giving back to the community.

and philanthropic landscape of the Sunshine Coast.

“Harry played a major part in making the Coast what it is today,” she says.

“As a developer, he’s left his mark on the Coast’s landscape in feature properties in Maroochydore and elsewhere across the Coast.

“Perhaps even more importantly, Harry and Margaret – along with Roy and Nola Thompson – are the architects of the special philanthropic culture the Sunshine Coast is renowned for. That culture of giving and supporting our own is part of what makes the Sunshine Coast so special.

“Harry led by example in giving to causes he felt made a difference in the world and, in doing so, encouraged others to do the same.

“I met Harry and Margaret when they first came to the Coast in maybe ’86 or ’87 in footy,” he says.

“He taught me a lot of things but possibly his best lesson was: if you are in a position to help people, do it. You get more back than you give.

“He epitomises the phrase ‘generous, giving soul’. The Coast is certainly better for him being here.”

Mr Reed’s funeral was last Friday. He leaves behind two children, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

His son Ken says: “We are a very close family. Harry was very active in the lives of his seven grandkids and that was obvious at his funeral. They showed a lot of love, it was wonderful.”

A tribute to Mr Reed will form part of the 15th anniversary celebrations at Reed House on April 18, along with a plaque dedicated to his memory.

FINDING STRENGTH AFTER TRAUMA

A Sunshine Coast woman’s debut book documents her journey following a freak fall.

An inspirational Sunshine Coast figure, known for her resilience and business success following a life-changing accident, is sharing her captivating journey in a debut book.

Legless: One woman’s journey from trauma to triumph is Paula Gowland’s story detailing the past decade of her life since becoming an amputee.

In 2014, Ms Gowland’s life took an unexpected turn when she broke her leg in four places after she fell from a bed while trying to hang curtains in her Kawana Island unit.

This freak accident ultimately resulted in the loss of her left leg.

Enduring two years of hospitalisation and many surgeries, her story chronicles the remarkable journey of overcoming adversity, rebuilding her life and finding strength in the face of challenges.

“It was a very heartbreaking time for my family as we lost our business and our home,” Ms Gowland says.

“Then, as I set about rebuilding my life, my prosthetic leg malfunctioned and I tripped over and broke my other leg. I ended up in a wheelchair.

“That was the part that nearly broke me. It left me quite devastated and it took a lot of mental strength to get over that hurdle.”

After Ms Gowland’s recovery, she unsuccessfully searched for work, prompting her and her husband John to reconsider their family business, Chemdry Suncoast.

This then led to their acquisition of Caloundra Art and Framing Gallery in 2018 which they transformed into Sunshine Coast Art and Framing Gallery in 2019.

“We worked hard and grew from four staff members to 24, added a new workshop and a gallery café, and opened a second store in Noosaville.

“It’s been an amazing journey, seeing our business grow from making $800,000 to a $2.2 million turnover each year.”

In December 2022, Ms Gowland and her husband also purchased Sunquest Signs, employing 10 staff.

With the success of these businesses, Ms Gowland was nominated for and took home the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network 2022 Sustainable Business Woman of the Year award.

Ms Gowland empowers readers to embrace their own journey, confront their inner demons and emerge stronger and more resilient than ever before.

“Throughout the book, I reflect on some very raw and vulnerable insights into the transformative power of overcoming trauma, share practical tools to help readers navigate their own setbacks,” she says.

“I remind readers of the importance of love, commitment and compassion in overcoming life’s challenges. I want this book to remind them that no matter how dire the circumstances may seem, there is always hope, and, with courage and determination, the impossible can become possible.”

POLICE NAB EASTER IDIOTS ON OUR ‘SAND HIGHWAY’

Sunshine Coast Highway Patrol and Tactical Crime Squad officers handed out droves of fines at Noosa North Shore and Double Island Point during the Easter long weekend.

Police issued 109 traffic infringement notices as part of Operation Sandstorm and Operation Whiskey Easter, from March 29 to April 1.

Officers conducted 968 random breath tests, finding one person with a blood alcohol reading of 0.130. Of the 53 random drug tests completed, two returned positive. Other offences included possessing dangerous drugs, drug diversions, unlicensed driving, public nuisance and driving without due care. Six defective-vehicle rectification notices were issued, with two vehicles ordered off the road due to illegal modifications.

Police intercepted a vehicle where a passenger was sitting on the door window, with part of their body outside the car on Teewah Beach. The driver was fined $619 for driving without due care and $1161 for driving with an unrestrained passenger. The passenger was fined $1161 for failing to wear a seatbelt and $288 for travel on part of motor vehicle not designed for passengers.

Police intercepted a vehicle at the Double Island Point Lagoon when a driver of a 4WD was towing a person on a kiteboard behind the car. That driver was fined $619 for driving without due care and $1161 for failing to wear a seatbelt. The person being towed in the water was fined $154 for travel outside of a vehicle.

Sunshine Coast Highway Patrol officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Shane Panoho says road rules still apply when driving on the beach.

“If you wouldn’t drive on the Bruce Highway with a passenger sitting out on the door window, don’t do it while driving on the beach, either,” he says.

“We will continue with increased patrols across the roads and beaches.”

CHEF EXTRAORDINAIRE

Julie Goodwin went from home cook to MasterChef winner but her new autobiography talks frankly of the mental illness simmering within.

Beloved Australian MasterChef winner and best-selling author Julie Goodwin will talk about her new autobiography, Your Time Starts Now – a candid, deeply moving memoir at a not-to-be-missed event later this month. Goodwin writes with brutal honesty about food, fame,

failure and freedom. She caught up with Ingrid Nelson ahead of the event. What can people expect in this autobiography? – It’s a life story, really. I do talk about MasterChef and a bit of behind-the-scenes stuff, but a big part of it is also about being diagnosed with a mental illness, how that presented itself to

me and what I’m doing now. It’s a lot.

What prompted you to write it? –When I first spoke out about being unwell, I got such a response to that. The number of people who contacted me and just said: “Thank you. I’ve been suffering for decades and I haven’t known how to tell anyone or how to ask for help”. If the reason I went through something so dreadful is so I could talk about it and help someone before they go down to the bottom of the well, then that serves a purpose.

Was it difficult to open up about it to begin with? – Yes, because when you do have an outwardly successful life, people view you as being lucky. It adds another layer of guilt to say I’m struggling. It leads to a knee-jerk reaction from people – what does she have to struggle about? I’ve never wanted to appear ungrateful or complain, but part of my learning over the years is that it’s not about being ungrateful or complaining: it’s an illness.

What is your biggest achievement – My kids. I have three grown sons and a three-year-old granddaughter, Delilah. She is the light of our lives. She is divine.

Where did your love of food/cooking come from? – It came from a love of eating, actually. I wanted to eat nice food and we had no money. So, I had to work out how to make nice food and it became a

proper obsession.

When did start you think you had a chance of winning MasterChef? – From the first minute, I thought: “What have I got myself into?” Many of the other contestants were well-travelled people who knew all the chefs and had been to all of the beautiful restaurants. I had just been here on the NSW Central Coast, cooking for my family. But then I thought, those same people were doing that instead of standing at the stove. I had stood at the stove every night for a couple of decades.

What has been the biggest lesson you have learned throughout your incredible journey? – Embrace where you are now. I once heard someone say: “Be where your feet are”. You can spend your life worrying about what’s happened and what is going to happen and none of it makes any difference. All it does is make you feel bad.

What can audiences expect at the Sunshine Coast event? – Nothing will be off the table. I love to take questions from the audience and I will answer in all honesty. You can also expect some funny stories.

Meet Julie Goodwin at The Events Centre Caloundra on Tuesday, April 30. Doors open at 6pm for a 7pm start. Book through library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or theeventscentre.com.au.

TIME TO DIG IN

At Visit Sunshine Coast, it’s time to get our hands dirty.

While my gardening skills are nothing to write home about, I will be grabbing a shovel to help plant the first of our trees through the Sunshine Coast Sustainability Program later in the month.

In a little over six months, many local businesses, tourism operators and visitors have joined the program, and the first 10,000 trees are now going into the ground at a site in the Cooroy Mountain Wildlife Corridor. Lucky for me, the crew at Noosa Landcare will be guiding the planting process which will transform a degraded patch of land into a bustling home for wildlife.

The area runs along a tributary creek that connects into the Upper Six-Mile Creek of the Mary River, which influences water quality in the Great Sandy Strait and Southern Great Barrier Reef lagoon.

We’ve chosen World Earth Day for our tree planting because it’s a day dedicated to protecting the environment, and the

Sunshine Coast Sustainability Program is the tourism industry’s way of giving back and greening our own backyard.

We know our visitors come here for our natural attractions – and they injected $5.2 billion into the Sunshine Coast economy last year.

So, we appreciate the importance of protecting our natural assets.

If you have friends and family coming for the holidays, they are also welcome to contribute to a greener future for the Sunshine Coast. Go to visitsunshinecoast. com/sustainability-program-tripcalculator to buy a tree.

EASTER HOLIDAY BLITZ ON ILLEGAL CAMPING

A crackdown of illegal campers in the Noosa region is continuing after a recent Easter holiday blitz.

Noosa Council’s recent patrols have resulted in 40 fines issued across Noosa Heads, Sunshine Beach, Sunrise Beach and Peregian Beach. The joint council and Queensland Police Service blitz saw 29 fines alone issued on the Thursday before Easter.

Council officers issued a further 11 fines and six warnings on Easter Saturday in patrols targeting illegal camping hotspots.

Local laws manager Rob Smith says

travellers were starting to heed the message that camping in vehicles in carparks and public areas will not be tolerated.

“The reduction in fines issued on Saturday, compared to the earlier patrols, shows the message is finally getting through to travellers that if they want to stay overnight in vehicles, they need to make use of Noosa’s designated campsites and van parks,” he says. “Public streets and carparks aren’t designed for camping and aren’t equipped with the necessary toilet and cooking facilities.”

HPOSITIVELY OPTIMISTIC

Jane Stephens joyfully looks on the bright side of life, but is aware of warnings of negatives associated with ‘toxic positivity’.

appiness is only real when shared. A candle’s light is not dimmed by lighting another. Joy shared is joy doubled.

Wiser people than me wrote these words, but I agree with my heart and soul.

But now there is such a thing as ‘toxic positivity’. Author of the Everything Psychology Book and media darling Kendra Cherry has warned of the perils of being too sunny. Apart from being seriously annoying, toxic positivity shames those around, causes them guilt, avoids authentic human emotion and prevents growth. The ‘good vibes only’ mantra is grating at times of personal distress, apparently. It can be abusive because it devalues, dismisses and minimises feelings. Rainbow chasers might even use the notion of positivity to downplay their own abusive actions.

To all that, I say phooey. I have bounced out of bed, smiled at strangers and sung in the shower almost since birth. In my early teen years, I read The Power of Positive Thinking and The Diary of Anne Frank and was warmed by the realisation I was not alone in my verve. That kickstarted a lifelong pursuit of learning more about positivity. I call the approach ‘educated

optimism’ because it involves feeling the feels and seeing the horrors of the world, but then deliberately seeking out those things to be thankful for.

A meta-analysis of 15 studies involving more than 250,000 patients at Mt Sinai Hospital ascertained that those with higher levels of optimism had a 35 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular events. Of course, optimists are more likely to take better care of their health, and have fewer illnesses, more stable cortisol levels and less inflammation than pessimists. An NHS-US Department of Veterans Affairs study found optimists tend to live 11-15 per cent longer. I have been accused of being naïve, utopian, a Pollyanna. I have been told I haven’t had enough of life’s knocks to see the world for real (trust me, I have) and that my pastel-coloured world is built on ignorance and fairy floss. But positive people are not stupid, nor pious. Our optimism is not blind. We often must work hard to find the diamonds in the dust, because we get dumped in life’s dirt as much as everyone else. And what is so offensive about sharing sunshine on a cloudy day? I know this to be true: life is brighter if you can find and share its joys.

BWHEN LIFE ISN’T BUCKETS OF FUN

Sami Muirhead is compiling a list of all the things she ‘like, never, ever, ever’ wants to do again in her lifetime.

ucket lists are things you want to do at least once in your life, such as seeing the cherry blossoms in Japan and watching the sunset over Uluru.

Most of us have bucket-list dreams but I have a new list that has developed, as I also turned half a century in age. I am embracing my anti-bucket list. Yes, this is now a trend and items on your anti-bucket list are things you never want to do again. To quote Taylor Swift: “Like, never, ever, ever.”

We recently moved house and it was one of the most-traumatic things I have ever done because I like to collect stuff. Our family had collected way-too-many things in the 13 years we were in our former home. I would rather undergo a root canal without anaesthetic than move house again. Next time, we would need an army of professional movers and shares in a bottle shop to make me even consider moving house. It is top of my anti-bucket list.

Also on the list is bungee jumping. My body does not bounce how it used to and hanging upside down by my feet while my bits and bobs are flung around is not my

idea of adrenalin-producing fun. And my pants have elastic in the waistband these days and this could all end very badly.

Anti-bucket list item No.3 is parachuting/hot air ballooning/ paragliding. I have done all the above in a bid to be young and crazy. Once, a boyfriend even proposed in a hot air balloon high above the white-cotton cliffs of Pamukkale in the valleys of Cappadocia in Turkey. It was romantic except for the fact there was no way I wanted to get married. The thought of being trapped so high in the sky makes my palms sweat.

Anti-bucket list item No.4 is to never eat anything I do not want to eat again when it comes to strange animal parts. That includes intestines, ears, noses, trotters, testicles or brains. Hard pass. End of story.

And finally on my anti-bucket list is to hold a snake. As a journalist, there is a rite of passage to do a piece to camera with a python around your neck. Not this little black duck. Snakes are freaky. I do not trust something without legs. They can twist and turn and twitch far too quickly. Perhaps the only things worse would be to discover a snake when you move house.

AUSSIE RETAILERS RUNNING HOT

Speculation of interest rate cuts, and also impending Stage 3 tax cuts, has sparked a rally in cyclical consumer companies. We agree these two factors will improve the near-term outlook for consumer spending and, by definition, cyclical retailers will get a larger benefit than defensive retailers. We expect the combined impact of monetary policy easing and the tax cuts should underpin mid-single-digit growth in total retail sales in the medium term, above our expectation of just two per cent in fiscal 2024.

Given what share prices are doing, however, we feel the market is expecting a much more pronounced recovery. On average, the cyclical retailers trade at a 17 per cent premium to our fair value estimates, and we believe there is significant downside risk if sales and earnings disappoint.

We expect retail to recover through to fiscal 2026, but we are not expecting anything like the boom we saw after the pandemic. The post-pandemic retail surge was underpinned by pent-up demand, unprecedented fiscal stimulus, and emergency monetary policy settings.

This rebound will look different, in our view. In contrast to the largesse spread during the pandemic, this government is concerned with fighting inflation and firming up its economic management credentials, with the federal

treasurer already warning we will not see “big cash splashes” in the upcoming budget. Stage 3 tax cuts will be helpful, but we estimate there will only be a modest contribution to fiscal 2025 consumption growth. At a cost of $21 billion, the tax cuts could add two per cent to consumption if all the windfall is spent. For context, this is only a quarter of the size of the Jobkeeper payments which underpinned the post-pandemic retail boom.

Easing monetary policy will also alleviate some of the current pressure on households. That said, the cash rate in fiscal 2025 is only forecast to return to the still elevated levels of early 2023, nowhere near the ultra-low rates seen during the pandemic. We estimate that one per cent of mortgage rate cuts, which is broadly in line with market expectations, adds less than 1per cent to spending, and will also be partially offset by fixed-rate mortgages rolling over to much-higher variable-rate loans With all the above in mind, shares in JB Hi-Fi, Premier Investments and Wesfarmers all trade at very significant premiums to our fair value estimates.

We expect demand for defensive goods, such as food and liquor, should hold up relatively well. Nevertheless, we forecast wage expenses to rise by more than sales, and this will be a drag for earnings at Coles, Woolworths, and Endeavour. The two supermarket operators appear expensive, but we see upside in Endeavour, Australia’s largest liquor retailer.

IMPOSTER SYNDROME AND EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP

While confidence is valued in our leaders, arrogance and a lack of humility and empathy can be damaging traits in the eyes of employees.

WORDS: Travis Schultz, managing partner, Travis Schultz & Partners.

Imposter Syndrome is often deemed incompatible with effective leadership, as self-doubt is seen to impede decision making. However, a measured dose of doubt can enhance judgment and cultivate relatable leadership.

It’s a common misconception that people leave jobs primarily due to monetary reasons. Dissatisfaction with leadership is often the root cause. Ineffective leaders, characterised by arrogance or overconfidence, can have detrimental effects on teams and organisations, highlighting the necessity for humble and empathetic leadership approaches.

Job interviews frequently uncover that applicants’ decisions to move on from their current roles are typically driven by discontent with their superiors rather than a desire for financial gain. This reality underscores the immense direct and indirect costs of staff turnover, both financially and culturally, prompting reflection on why organisations tolerate ineffective leadership.

The most-damaging leaders often exhibit traits such as arrogance, mercilessness, solipsism or overconfidence. While their confidence may seem reassuring, their lack of humility and accountability can lead to negative outcomes, emphasising the need for leaders with a more empathetic and humble approach.

Contrary to popular belief, mild

imposter syndrome can actually facilitate effective leadership by promoting insight, introspection and authenticity. Leaders who grapple with self-doubt tend to be more relatable and open to learning –traits that foster trust and confidence within their teams. This inclination towards self-examination encourages preparedness, a commitment to learning and a growth mindset – all of which are crucial for effective leadership in dynamic environments.

Despite the stigma attached to imposter syndrome, it presents an opportunity to nurture empathetic, humble and accountable leaders. With research indicating that a significant portion of individuals experience imposter syndrome at some point in their lives, it offers a promising pool for cultivating future leaders who prioritise authenticity over arrogance. While confidence is valued in leadership, arrogance has no place in effective leadership. Embracing a healthy dose of self-doubt can lead to more relatable, empathetic and accountable leadership, ultimately fostering a positive organisational culture and driving success.

Daintree Chocolate Melting Moment, Milk Sorbet, Eucalyptus

Makes 6

dish.Signature

CHOCOLATE MOUSSE INGREDIENTS

• 300g Daintree chocolate, finely chopped

• 5 egg yolks • 2 whole eggs • 250g castor sugar

• 80ml water • 500ml double cream.

METHOD: Place chocolate in a stainless steel bowl and melt it in a double boiler. Remove the chocolate and allow it to cool. Whisk egg yolks and whole eggs until they form the ribbon stage. Place the mixing bowl over a bowl of hot water to create volume in the sabayon (rich and creamy dessert). Meanwhile, combine sugar and water in a small saucepan and bring to the boil until it reaches 120 degrees. Once the sugar has reached the temperature, the sabayon should be reaching its peak. Carefully pour the boiling sugar into a mixer and beat at a high speed for 10 minutes. When pouring in the sugar, run it down the inside of the bowl to avoid hitting the top of the whisk – otherwise, you won’t achieve the required volume when folding in the chocolate and cream. In a stainless steel bowl, beat the double cream until soft peaks form. Carefully fold the room temperature-melted chocolate into half of the sabayon and then combine the rest of the sabayon mix. When the chocolate and sabayon are combined, fold in the lightly whipped cream until the mixture is fully combined. Pour the pave (rectangular-shaped dessert) onto the Genoise tin base and set it in the fridge overnight.

EUCALYPTUS CENTRE INGREDIENTS

• 500ml milk • 190ml sugar syrup • xanthan gum (about 2 tsp)

• 75g washed and picked eucalyptus leaves (squeeze and bruise them just before adding to mix).

METHOD: Cold infuse the milk with the eucalyptus leaves (for at least 24 hours but no longer than 48). Then, pass through a fine cloth and mix with the sugar syrup. Next, blend with xanthan and then freeze in a mould in the freezer.

MILK SORBET INGREDIENTS

• 500ml milk • 250ml sugar syrup • 115ml glucose.

METHOD: Melt glucose into the sugar syrup by boiling and allow to cool completely before adding to the milk. Mix well and churn.

TO ASSEMBLE: Using a muffin tin for your mould, heap in a tablespoon of the mousse into one muffin mould, and then a frozen eucalyptus centre. Then place another heaped tablespoon of mousse on top. Allow to set again in the fridge. To serve, turn out your Melting Moment onto a plate and shave some Daintree chocolate over the top with a microplane. Place a spoon of milk sorbet on top and serve.

EMBRACE AUTUMN HUES

We love autumn. The weather cools, the days are (usually) sunny, there is a crispness to the air and those beautiful golden-brown tones shine in our natural surroundings. It’s no wonder autumn is a season that inspires interior design.

THE COLOURS

The key is to blend warm, earthy tones: rust, caramel, sunburnt orange, copper, cream – beauty at its best. Keep in mind that muted tones will make it easier to naturally incorporate the theme into your home. To add a luxe twist, introduce pops of gold.

Incorporate light blankets, faux-fur throws, knit cushions and textured rugs in warm colours to create a welcoming and comfortable environment. We like the pretty Daliah tufted throw from Pillow Talk. It’s available in two combinations: white/ natural and caramel/natural.

The handwoven jute Atrium tessellate natural rug from Choices Flooring We love!

Timber furniture and décor accents will bring a sense of comfort and cosiness into your space. You could also decorate with dried branches, pine cones or reed-like plants (real or fake). We love the twisted suar stool, pictured here, Coastal Drift , Caloundra. These reed grass plants from Adairs are a great way to introduce interesting textures into your home.

TREAT YOURSELF TO LUXURY CRUISING

What do you expect when you are about to set foot on a billion-dollar cruise ship, built for only 746 guests?

Two words: ‘inclusive luxury’.

And that is exactly what I got when I had the incredible opportunity to experience five nights on Regent Seven

Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Explorer. Cruising from Darwin to Townsville gave me the ideal opportunity to enjoy fine dining every night. For someone who loves food experiences, this was right up my street. Think lobster nachos and margaritas poolside for lunch, followed by five courses of decadent French fare, starting with beef

tartare and caviar (possibly a little nap in between meals!).

I wondered what I would do for five nights at sea, but I need not have worried. Regent put on an incredible array of activities from crafts to bingo, and salsa dance lessons to pickleball on the top deck. There was something for everyone.

For those wanting to make sure no extra pounds were gained, the state-of-theart gym is where you want to be –overlooking the ocean. All machines were high-tech. And don’t worry if you have forgotten your headphones: they are provided for free, along with the fridge stocked with Gatorade. How could you not exercise at sea? Also included is a choice of fitness classes from yoga to HIIT.

If the gym is not for you, how about the spa featuring a cold room, steam room, sauna and an infinity pool located at the back of the ship – all included in your cruise fare. The evening entertainment was exceptional, with top-class performers, comedians and lectures. You could never be bored.

I stayed in a Concierge Suite. Booking this level gives you pre-cruise accommodation and transfers, beds that look out to the ocean and a walk-in wardrobe as big as I have at home.

The consensus from guests (and me) was that they had never been so relaxed so quickly. To say the beds were comfy was an understatement. What a way to travel. With itineraries all over the world, why not treat yourself to all-inclusive luxury with Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

GETTING STAFFING RIGHT FOR A HEALTHY CARE SECTOR

Staffing the Sunshine Coast’s largest and fastest-growing industries is no easy task, but it’s one specialist recruitment agency STEPS Staffing Solutions couldn’t be more familiar with.

As a social venture and professional offering from long-standing community organisation STEPS Group Australia, STEPS Staffing Solutions was born from STEPS’ struggle to fill its own job vacancies.

STEPS realised there was a gap in the market to provide specialist recruitment services to the health, community and aged care sectors, and today it partners with some of the biggest industry employers on the Coast.

LevelUp Independent Living manager Joseph Oderinde has first-hand experience with the challenges of staff shortages and the need for reliable disability support.

“We wanted them to find people we could rely on,” he says.

“Since signing with STEPS Staffing Solutions, they have always been reachable and have provided the staff and support we need as an organisation.

“It’s not only about them getting staff, but reliable staff.”

The recruitment agency leans on more than 36 years of experience to help organisations fill roles.

These positions range from senior management to support workers, and

any role that enables the industry to run efficiently, including administration, hospitality and cleaning and maintenance roles.

Partnering with STEPS Staffing Solutions isn’t just about getting expert advice.

The recruitment agency remains bedded in its mission to make a difference by providing opportunity, donating all profits to creating a more independent future for young people with a disability and autism.

For specialist recruitment services for the health, community and aged care industry, get in touch with STEPS Staffing Solutions on 1300 110 444 or visit stepsstaffingsolutions.com.au.

DISABILITY SUPPORTS THAT ARE ‘FIT FOR YOU’

The way Australians with disabilities access support could be transformed under the federal government’s plan to contain budget blowouts and maintain the sustainability of its once worldleading scheme.

As part of the government’s attempts to address recommendations made by an independent 2023 review, the 660,000 Australians covered by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) would undergo an assessment and receive a plan and budget based on those support needs. The money an individual receives can only be spent in accordance with their plan, unless their needs “significantly change”.

NDIS Minister Bill Shorten clarified that any needs tests would be created in consultation with the disability sector.

He says the changes don’t mean people will have to re-prove their disability: “The result will be a budget for disability supports that are fit for you.”

Launch your career in an industry with real opportunities.

PAINT A PICTURE OF WATERFRONT DREAMS

Freehold block in Sunshine Cove offers uninterrupted lake vistas and an opportunity to be a part of prestigious estate in city heart.

As far as vacant land on the Sunshine Coast goes, this block is being described as a “perfect waterfront canvas”.

The block is situated within one of the region’s most prestigious estates, just a stone’s throw from Maroochydore’s emerging city centre.

Located at 18 Banfield Place, Maroochydore, this waterfront land is part of Sunshine Cove and ready for the buyer to build their dream home.

The 296sqm freehold block is located within the Bedarra Precinct and offers uninterrupted lake vistas across to the large bushland reserve within Sunshine Cove.

It includes more than 11 metres of water frontage.

Sunshine Cove Realty’s Penny Service says the estate’s location continues to be a drawcard for residents, offering inner-city living that reflects the relaxed Coast lifestyle.

“One of the most-unique features of this waterfront block is its view and the lifestyle on offer,” Ms Service says.

“The trees across the water opposite

provide such a stunning backdrop.

“Anyone entertaining family or friends out here is going to blow their guests away.

“With direct access to the water’s edge, you can even hold your own family fishing competition.

“The flexibility of using any builder you want really means you are building your dream home designed to suit your lifestyle but also to take advantage of this unique and stunning waterfront block of land.

“And to think you are literally an easy walk into the heart of Maroochydore.”

The final chapter in the almost 20-year

development also continues with the last blocks of land within Sunshine Cove now poised for sale.

Ms Service says the land titles for remaining blocks in this final land release, known as the Lancelin Stage 3 precinct, are expected soon.

“Lodging the titles is such an important step obviously,” she says.

“After months of civil construction, it is thrilling to nearly be at that point where we can physically welcome our newest residents to the community.”

Ms Service says Sunshine Cove has

been popular with a range of buyers, but particularly existing locals.

“A lot of the people who have land under contract are actually locals of Sunshine Cove and Sunshine Coast, which is a real achievement – considering out of everywhere on the Coast, they have chosen to build their dream homes in Sunshine Cove.

“This is our last freehold land release, and there are still some incredible blocks on offer: direct waterfront, our versatile urban lots and also terrace blocks.”

The final release of land is underway at Sunshine Cove.

Sunshine Cove, by Chardan Development Group, is a 106-hectare greenfill site on land that used to form part of Wises Farm that was unveiled in 2004.

It is currently home to 2000 residents, with almost 900 properties built.

For more information on Lancelin Stage 3, visit the sales office at 17 Hidden Place, Maroochydore, or contact Penny Service from Sunshine Cove Realty on 5443 2458 or penny@ sunhinecoverealty.com.

Built two decades ago, the avant-garde lines of this bespoke property have been admired since its completion. Shorefront is a beach home like no other – from the property designer’s interpretation of how a contemporary Queensland beach home should present, via facets such as window design to capture the prevailing sea breezes, through to the combination of the property’s two dwellings, via a suspended bridge. What is going on in the world? Why is there so much stupidity?

Who in their right mind thinks its a great idea to stand next to a cliff and take a selfie so they get lots of likes on their social media post?

Or wear dark clothes riding a scooter at 50km at night looking at their TikTok?

Or cross a busy road looking at their phone?

Small waves around. Hopefully there aren’t too many people doing stupid things in the surf. More waves for us to catch!
