Next week is Organ Donation Week, a national awareness week that promotes organ donation and encourages people to talk to their family about their wishes in relation to organ donation. COVID payment
resumes As the country watches cases of COVID-19 continue to climb, the federal government agrees to reinstate the $750 isolation payment to eligible employees. WORDS: AAP.

ccess to COVID-19 isolation payments resumed this week as health authorities try to stop the rising spread of cases of the virus across the country. Employees who have tested positive for the virus and need to isolate from their jobs can receive the $750 payment, which was made available from this week. It comes after the federal government agreed to extend the isolation payments to the end of September. The scheme had expired on June 30. Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the payments were reinstated following health advice on the growing numbers of COVID-19 cases caused by a more infectious strain of the Omicron subvariant. He says the federal government would work collaboratively alongside the state and territory governments in helping to manage the third wave of Omicron cases. The return of the isolation payments will come with a $780 million price tag, but the cost will be split among the
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese federal, state and territory governments. The federal government initially said it did not want to reintroduce the payments due to pressure on the federal budget. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has not indicated whether the September 30 deadline for the payments would be able to be extended. On Monday, New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet said it was also time to review the seven-day isolation period for workers with COVID-19. “I raised that last week about having a look at reducing that period of time because COVID’s not going away,” he told Sydney radio 2GB. “We need to look at isolation requirements in a way that still maintains

Over the weekend, more than 78,000 new cases of COVID-19 were registered, with 107 deaths recorded. More than 337,000 active cases were reported, while 4700 people were in hospital with the virus. Experts have said the peak of the fresh wave of Omicron isn’t expected to hit until at least the end of July. With more hospitalisations set to occur in coming weeks, the Victorian government has put forward a more than $160 million package to respond to the wave. The money will be used to fund 400 additional specialist staff across 12 major hospitals in Melbourne and Geelong. It comes as hospitals have been experiencing a rise in cases accompanied by staff shortages due to healthcare workers being sick with the virus, with more than 10,000 staff off sick in the first week of July alone. There’s been a 99 per cent rise in hospitalisations with COVID in the state since June 22.

THE GIFT OF LIFE
Kate Clark received a life-saving organ donation 25 years ago and since then she hasn’t wasted a moment of her second chance at life. WORDS: Shirley Sinclair.

ndurance athlete Kate Clark remembers the phone call of almost 25 years ago as if it were yesterday. Living in Sydney in 1998 at the age of 17, she was eating dinner with her mother Kim at their favourite Italian restaurant after a two-hour training session. In a time before mobile phones, her mum’s pager started beeping. The realisation of what the continuous beeping signal meant sent Kate charging towards her own pager, left in the car outside, for confirmation. The vital call she needed to make took another sprint around the corner to the nearby veterinary clinic where she worked. “It’s funny what you remember. The vet had stable doors and the bottom door was shut,” Kate, now 42, of Meridan Plains, says. “I had the two practice owners and one of the other vet nurses all peering over, watching me make this phone call. I just remember sliding down the wall.” The shock of finally hearing the words: “we’ve got a liver for you” left her speechless. By then, Kim had arrived at the vet to finish the emergency call to Kate’s organ donor transplant co-ordinator. That scene is indelibly etched into memory because it is the day Kate received her second chance at life. Kate, her older brother Johnny and father John were born with a rare genetic disorder called progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis, or PFIC (Type 3), which causes liver disease and failure. Although her brother Johnny died at just 15 from complications after his third liver transplant, all three family members benefitted from the surgery that added precious years to their life. National DonateLife Week 2022 runs from Sunday, July 24 to Sunday, July 31 to raise awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donations. It encourages more people to start a conversation with loved ones about their wishes to donate after their death and to take a minute to register at donatelife.gov.au/register-donor-today with their Medicare card. While seven in 10 Queenslanders support organ donation, only one in three is actually registered, and the Australian Government’s Organ and Tissue Authority, supported by state and territory DonateLife agencies, urgently needs to close that gap. Organ donation is a rare event, occurring only when someone dies in an intensive care unit or emergency
department, as organs must be working well to be transplanted. In all cases, organ donation will proceed only if there is a person on the waitlist who is a match. One person offering their organs means up to seven people can come off the waitlist – even more for eye and tissue donations. About 1750 Aussies are waiting for a life-saving organ donation, and 149 of those are waiting for a liver. As a grateful organ recipient, Kate raises awareness of the importance of registering and what it means to receive the gift of life from another human being. She says that having more people registered as organ donors opens the door to a greater number of recipients, should the circumstances enable it. The liver from her anonymous deceased donor wasn’t a perfect match but

I’ll just keep on living and I’ll do everything right to maintain that health” it was good enough to proceed to transplant and saved her young life. For Kate, every week is DonateLife Week. “It’s a lifelong challenge to educate and inspire other people to donate,” she says on a chilly Saturday morning, after a 3am wake-up for a 4am run. “You’ve been given a new lease on life and while you couldn’t do it pre-transplant, post-transplant the world is your oyster. “And that’s all thanks to a generously selfless gift that somebody in their darkest moments have been able to gift you. “I was put on the list in November and I had my transplant in January. “The surgeons came in and basically said that had I not had it that week, I probably would have had major heart failure. “That was because of the strain my liver was putting on the rest of my organs. “I hadn’t noticed too many changes, but my doctors had noticed a few things. They told me afterwards … that I didn’t have any circulation to my legs. My heart wasn’t able to pump the blood around my body enough.” myweeklypreview.com.au

The change she felt in her energy levels was nothing short of extraordinary after the surgery – she jokes that she felt like the Energizer bunny. The resultant joy of loved ones following a successful organ transplant cannot be under-estimated, either. Kate was only 12 when Johnny died but is grateful the family had an extra six years of happy memories with him than they had thought possible. She shares the story of an afternoon at the local public swimming pool when a group of younger children spotted his three-pointed star scar – shaped like a Mercedes-Benz car badge – from his sternum to just above his belly button and stretching out and down either side. “These kids came running up: ‘Oh cool, man. Radical scar. What happened?’,” Kate remembers. “My brother puffed his chest out like a bit of a peacock and he goes: ‘You’ve got no idea. It was such a close call with a great white shark. It was intense’. “He wasn’t going to be able to explain what he’d been through to these kids anyway. But it was a badge of honour.” Since her own liver transplant operation, Kate has honoured her donor and their family by keeping fit and healthy, as well as living her life to the fullest.
BY THE NUMBERS DonateLife Week 2022 runs from Sunday, July 24 to Sunday, July 3, and aims to encourage Australians to register as organ and tissue donors. • In 2022, DonateLife Week hopes to encourage up to 100,000 more Australians to register. • Since the national program began, nearly 16,000 people have received life-saving organ transplants. • About 1750 Aussies are on the waitlist for an organ transplant. • 91 Queenslanders who died in 2021 became organ donors, saving the lives of 275 Australians. That doesn’t just include working alongside husband Paul as they manage an over-50s lifestyle community together. She takes on elite endurance and obstacle events such as the physically and mentally challenging 24-hour Enduro and Spartan Races and has earned podium finishes. While a liver transplant lasts an average 12 years before another is required, Kate is
proud to have been on an almost 25-year journey. As one of the longest-serving Australian athletes on the roll call at the biennial World Transplant Games, she remains undefeated in the 3km road run, 400m, 800m and 1500m running races, 3km race walk and is a member of 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relay teams. “Prior to the transplant, I was fit and fairly competitive. I was a nationally ranked race walker and long-distance runner, even with liver failure,” Kate says. “I was probably one of the lucky people in that respect in that I still had a fairly normal existence prior to transplant. “Lying on the table before going under sedation [before transplant surgery], the team knew our family quite well because of my brother. The mood was light and there were lots of jokes. “The donor transplant co-ordinator said, ‘Look, the Australian Transplant Games are in Ballarat in September. I bet you can’t make it’. And I was like, ‘All right, bet’s on’.” After the surgery, Kate spent a tough three months in hospital when “everything that could have gone wrong post-transplant did”, and a further three months of home nursing. She is now on medication for life to ensure her body doesn’t reject the donated organ and send her into liver failure again. She must have blood tests every three months, regular scans and check-ups, and sees her specialist at Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital annually. The successful liver transplant has allowed Kate to celebrate her 18th and 21st birthdays, to walk down the aisle and to travel. And yes, she did represent her country at those Transplant Games in Ballarat, with the help of her athletics coach, nine months after her operation. Those are milestones she will never take for granted. But rather taking one day at a time, Kate knows she can now look to the future and make plans. “There was a time where I just winged it
Kate Clark at her wedding with Paul and lived by the seat of my pants, purely because you live a long time wondering what each day is going to bring – pretransplant and particularly when you are on the waiting list,” she says. “‘Is today the day I’m going to get the call?’ It’s like waiting for the kettle to boil when you’re hanging for a coffee. It’s the longest wait of your life. “Given that the doctors actually said to me: ‘You’ll probably have a life expectancy of this liver of 12 years’, when I got to 12 years, I was petrified. “I just kept waiting for it to fail. And then after 14 years, I just went, ‘I’m not going to live expecting things to not go right. I’ll just keep on living and I’ll do everything right to maintain that health’. “I often say I’m probably healthier than the person sitting next to me in the movie theatre. Now I like to make plans. I do plan for retirement and I do plan for old age because I expect that.” Register as an organ and tissue donor at donatelife.gov.au/register.

ith 21 years of leadership experience under his belt in a senior executive position with the Sunshine Coast Council and a proven commitment to collaboration and making a difference in the community, Wishlist is in good hands with Brendan Hogan at the helm as the new general manager. Working alongside Wishlist’s longtime CEO Lisa Rowe, the dynamic duo is the perfect match to continue to engage the community and help support the changing face of the Sunshine Coast’s public health services for the benefit of the local community. Reflecting on his long history with the Sunshine Coast Council, Mr Hogan says he is excited to join the exceptional Wishlist team of volunteers, supporters, staff and board members in a role that will utilise his leadership skills and passion to make a positive contribution to our region’s hospital and health services. “I’ve been with council over 21 years and have always thought so highly of the organisation. together of alternative medical provision models,” Mr Hogan says. “Once you go inside the doors at Wishlist, it’s a much larger operation than perhaps a lot of people might be familiar with, especially in terms of the accommodation services it provides for patients’ families who are accessing their hospital and health services.” Wishlist supports Reed House in Nambour, which provides emergency accommodation for family with loved ones in Nambour, Selangor and Sunshine Coast University Hospital and more recently Wishlist House at Birtinya. Wishlist Centre, located conveniently opposite the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, is the most recent addition and

The families who are in various ways impacted by their circumstances are so appreciative of the help Wishlist provides.”

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT RACISM Human rights activist and former Socceroo Craig Foster is coming to the Sunshine Coast to share his insight and lead a discussion on ending racism.
A
former Socceroo’s captain and passionate human rights activist is set to spark powerful dialogue as he speaks on the Sunshine Coast tomorrow. Craig Foster will feature at Venue 114’s next signature In Conversation event where he will discuss becoming anti-racist. Well-known for representing Australia on the international soccer stage, followed by a career in sports broadcasting, Mr Foster makes a significant contribution to multiculturalism, human rights and refugee support organisations, and to football. Mr Foster is also a member of Australian Multicultural Council and in 2021 was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). “We all have a responsibility to break down barriers to equal social participation of our fellow Australians,” Mr Foster says. “This means acknowledging and understanding racism, being willing to hear about the experiences of those around us and being mindful and sensitive to their well-being in our daily lives.” His humanitarian activism extends to several, high-profile campaigns including #SaveHakeem to free Bahraini refugee and Australian footballer Hakeem al-Araibi from a Thai prison. Mr Foster was also instrumental in the #GameOver movement to call for the resettlement and freedom of more than 400 refugees and asylum seekers detained in
Taekwondo athletes, and Afghan Paralympians who went on to compete in Tokyo. This powerful event invites attendees to join Mr Foster and panellists to openly discuss the impact racism can have on the Sunshine Coast community. The panel includes University of the Sunshine Coast adjunct professor David Hollinsworth, director of Sunny Comms Peppi Bueti, Christine Thomas of Cygnet Centre Peacebuilding and Transformation, and the founder of Sunshine Coast African Diaspora Community, Walters Nkemfack. Sunshine Coast Council community portfolio councillor David Law says the community is proud to welcome leaders in the field of positive action and social harmony. “Venue 114’s In Conversation event provides the ideal stage to facilitate a conversation about what it means to be anti-racist as an individual and as a society,” Cr Law says. “The In Conversation events were founded on a passion to educate, engage and empower our community; to sow seeds of thought and invite growth. The Becoming Anti-Racist theme will invite robust, uncomfortable yet important discussions on how we all have a responsibility to be anti-racist.”

WISHLIST HELPED BRING ARCHER HOME Archer Howe’s family had to move to Brisbane so he could receive urgent medical care, but thanks to Wishlist, they are back on the Sunshine Coast.
Y
ou would never know it by Archer Howe’s infectious smile and energy, but this brave four-year-old lives a rare life. Archer was born with two very rare genetic conditions – congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) and Hirschsprung’s disease. Combined they are known as Haddad’s syndrome and threaten to cut his young life short every day. Archer was born at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SUCH) – to parents Tom and Summer Howe – and terrifyingly stopped breathing soon after birth. Ms Howe says it was an extremely distressing time as her critically ill newborn was rushed to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. “Tom and I didn’t get to hold him at all, and I couldn’t be discharged, so Archer spent his first night without us in intensive care in Brisbane. We were distraught,” she says. Then began a nine-month journey of Archer receiving life-saving treatment in the paediatric intensive care unit. While the doctors tried to understand the cause of the Archer’s inability to breathe unassisted, they soon discovered he was not passing stools, diagnosing him with Hirschsprung’s disease. This condition results when nerve cells do not develop properly along the length of the colon when the foetus is growing. At just four days old, Archer underwent surgery to remove one third of his bowel, leaving him with a colostomy bag and lack of sensation to recognise when he needs to go to the toilet.
By the time he was four weeks old, Archer’s breathing problems had been diagnosed as CCHS, a condition that affects the autonomic nervous system and most critically the brain’s ability to regulate breathing. Baby Archer underwent his second major surgery, this time to insert a tracheostomy so he could be connected to a ventilator for life support every time he sleeps. To compound his parent’s trauma, genetic testing revealed a mutation that predisposed their son to cardiac issues and cancerous tumours.
“It became clear that Archer would need an extraordinary level of care for survival, so we packed up our home in Noosa, quit our jobs and moved to Brisbane for the next four years,” Ms Howe says. The family remained in Brisbane until specific paediatric medical equipment was bought for the Sunshine Coast, and specialised support workers could be trained to help Archer. The $130,000 needed for the equipment at SCUH was made possible thanks to the annual Give Me 5 appeal that supports local health charity Wishlist. Interestingly, Ms Howe worked for local radio station 92.7 MIX FM, which runs the appeal, before having Archer. “We were so relieved to get the news just before Christmas last year that we could finally return to the Sunshine Coast and bring Archer home for the first time,” she says. “We’re so grateful that Wishlist purchased the equipment that meant not just Archer, but other critically ill kids on the Coast could be transported safely when they needed care.” Despite their daily struggles, the Howe family remains positive and fundraise each year. “The next stage for us is if Archer’s heart pauses and that sees many CCHS children requiring support of a pacemaker by the time they’re seven, plus the ongoing check-ups for cancerous tumours,” Ms Howe says.

Council rolls out milestone new-look waste collection service For the past two weeks, a fleet of new-look waste collection trucks has been rolling through Sunshine Coast streets, as part of a new collection contract between Sunshine Coast Council and Queensland-based, family-owned company JJ’s Waste & Recycling.
A
rainbow of new waste truck colours can be spotted across the Sunshine Coast region, with lime green representing the new electric truck, green for garden organics, yellow for recycling, red for general waste, and teal as a general truck which can be used for commercial collection, public place bins or to help out with kerb-side collections if needed. It’s hoped the eye-catching design encourages the community to play a part in Council’s goal for a zero-net emissions future by getting waste sorted for a cleaner, greener and sustainable environment. The new JJ’s Waste & Recycling trucks offer a reliable collection service for residents thanks to the in-vehicle system, j-Track®, which provides
drivers with alerts if it recognises that a street or segment has been missed. The Council Portal also allows customer service teams to monitor collection services as they happen. The fleet of new diesel vehicles meet emissions standards known as Euro 6 applied by the European Union to minimise fuel use and harmful exhaust emissions. This standard is above the current requirements for Australian diesel vehicles which will ensure a cleaner, quieter service for Sunshine Coast residents. Council will also partner with JJ’s Waste & Recycling to explore carbon-saving initiatives through emerging technologies for low emission vehicles with a trial electric vehicle
included as part of the new fleet. Plans are also in motion to trial a hydrogen fuel cell waste truck soon and, depending on the success of the trial, determine how the waste fleet might transition to electric or hydrogen fuel cell trucks in future years as technology matures. The milestone also coincided with the start of the expanded garden organics collection service, with an additional 45,000 households recycling their garden waste. Residents are encouraged to please only put grass clippings, small branches and twigs, leaves, garden prunings and old flowers in their garden bin for a high-quality mulch product. GIVE THEM SHELTER SCARS is calling on tradies and the community to rally together to build new accommodation at the refuge. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.
O
ne of the region’s biggest animal shelters is hoping the community and local tradies will come to the aid of a 43-year-old dog building in desperate need of repair. The Shelter the Sunny Coast Built is an ongoing project of the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS) that will provide temporary accommodation for abused, abandoned, stray and surrendered dogs who are awaiting their forever homes.
It comes as SCARS faces its highest numbers of pet surrenders in history, with 135 cats and dogs currently in care, with a further 55 animals on a waiting list. Contributing to the increase is the region’s continuing rental crisis, which is forcing residents out of homes and with no choice but to give up their cherished pets. SCARS president Penny Brischke says the building has been an integral part of the shelter for decades and the upgrades will ensure a better equipped facility for
the future. “The existing buildings have helped us save and rehome over 20,000 dogs since 1979,” she says. “We know this wonderful community will come together to help so many more.” Plans for the existing Besser block building with wire fencing include transforming it into 20 comfortable dog enclosures, with an opportunity for local organisations to sponsor a pen. Ms Brischke says SCARS will use its biggest annual fundraiser, Paws for a Cause, to inject money into the project. It is hoped this will be the final funding needed, after the fundraising campaign for the project began in 2021. The event, happening on August 6, is a three-course long lunch with auctions, raffles and furry friends available for adoption. “We are again asking for the community’s support to bring in the final funding for the Shelter the Sunny Coast Built and they can do that while eating great food and meeting some of the beautiful cats and dog available for adoption,” she says. “The Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge simply could not operate without the support of people and businesses on the Coast.” SCARS is also calling out to local tradies who can help make the project a reality. “This is also our call to arms for builders, tradies and suppliers to help us make this a reality for our dogs,” Ms Brischke says. “We are seeking expressions of interest from those who believe they have the skills or materials that will help us get The Shelter the Sunny Coast Built off the ground.” To find out more about the Shelter the Sunny Coast Built visit sippycreek.com.au. The Sunshine Coast is now home to two First Nations Police Liaison Officers (PLO), Brooke Kingdom and Vernon Corporal, who will collaborate with Traditional Custodians, Elders and community groups across the district. Ms Kingdom is from Anaiwan and Kamilaroi country and previously worked with disadvantaged children in Armidale, New South Wales. Mr Vernon, a proud descendant of the Wakka Wakka and Bidjara peoples, formerly served with the Australian Defence Force before transitioning to the Queensland Police Service. The PLOs will assist police officers to sensitively communicate with the public to prevent offensive behaviour, violence, unrest and potential crime, and assist the community to access policing services and provide advice.

after putting her self-doubt aside to go along to a photoshoot in Maroochydore with her cousin. “My anxiety almost stopped me but I went for the photoshoot and I loved it,” she says. “It was then I realised I wanted to become a model.” From there, Ms Lindquist enrolled in a weekend-long self-development program in Brisbane to build her skills and confidence. “I learnt so much and my confidence grew; the photo shoot was incredible. I even loved doing the catwalk runway show.” The qualified beautician then went on to compete in the Miss Photogenic Australia 2022 competition winning the adult division, as well as model potential and photographer’s choice. “This was an amazing opportunity to help me gain experience and exposure in the modelling industry, and it was one of the most incredible feelings I have ever felt.” After her competition success Ms Lindquist is being selected to travel to New York to walk for Sunshine Coast-based Belle Le Chic, which specialises in formal and bridal dresses. “This is a dream come true for me,” Ms Lindquist says. “Within such a short time I have achieved so much with just believing in myself, having my family and friends support me and pushing my anxiety and fears to the side. “I still get scared, but I don’t allow it to stop me anymore. I am ready to see how far I can go and where my modelling career takes me.”

PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS INITIATE BEACH CLEAN-UP A group of students from North Arm State School recently joined forces with Coolum and North Shore Coast Care volunteers to restore the Yaroomba Beach dunes and collect rubbish. As part of the school’s extension English project Kids in Action Save Sea Turtles, students initiated and advertised the beach clean-up to attract peers from North Arm and other local schools. On the day, 50 native plants including coast banksia, beach bird’s eye and pig face were planted. Several weed species were removed, along with a large bag of polystyrene, hard plastics, chip packets, bottle caps and drinking straws.
“It’s been great to see our students working collaboratively alongside passionate and knowledgeable Coast Care volunteers to manage coastal habitat,” teacher Vickie Jaenke says. Year five student Archie says agrees. “I really enjoyed my morning at Yaroomba with Coast Care repopulating the dunes with native trees and plants that belong there,” he says. “We were able to collect a lot of rubbish off the beach before it washed into the sea, and Coast Care taught me some information about marine life that I hope to use in our Kids in Action Save Sea Turtles project.”
On Saturday, July 30, the Yandina School of Arts will hold a cent auction to raise money for building restorations. The community-owned and operated heritage hall caters for a diverse range of activities including martial arts, fitness, yoga, dance, live theatre, creative writing and more. Happening from 10am in the hall at 11 Farrell Street, prizes will include local produce, handmade goods and gift vouchers to local businesses. Entry is via gold coin donation. Our constant need for digital connectedness is harmful, writes Jane Stephens. So do you have the strength to disconnect?
Ashley Robinson spent last Sunday sifting through garden trimmings and weeds at the dump, but the day didn’t start out like that.
T
une out to tune in. Reset with a digital detox. The phrases seem almost trite now – two decades after the internet and social media moved in and organised a takeover of our every waking moment. Everything is instant: grocery ordering, food delivery, music and TV show streaming, dictionary look-ups and messaging services. I recently returned from a week-long holiday to 332 emails. Social media contact was briefly broken only when in flight. The Australian Communications and Media Authority puts meat on these connected bones: 99 per cent of Australian adults have access to the internet. Nine in 10 have a home internet connection, and three-quarters of these have an NBN connection. The average time spent online is more than three hours a day. Almost half of all internet traffic in Australia comes from mobile devices, the most popular internet activity is email and three in five users say looking at social media is the first thing they do in the morning. The consequences of such immediate connection can be fraught and double-
sided, and not just for teenagers. The expectation of a fast response means being on the receiving end of radio silence feels akin to being left off a friend’s birthday party list or not being picked on the team in primary school PE. We rationalise our need to be everavailable: what if something happens to our elderly parents/our boss needs a task done/ our spouse forgets to take the shopping list? But disconnect we must – now and then – to hear the sounds of our neighbourhood, to simply sit and ponder, to remember how to pick up the phone and call a friend for real instead of sending our voice in a grab or via voice-to-text. Even a day out takes planning, discipline and putting up with incredulity, but it is health bringing. A diet comprising solely of instant everything is irrefutably unhealthy, and this is as true for communication and entertainment as it is for food. Sometimes we need connection instead of contacts, massages instead of messages and a fresh air instead of remaining in a virtual room. A full life requires exploration of actual as well as virtual spaces.

ad an interesting Sunday last week when I attended the planting of a plum tree in the Alex Community Garden in honour of one of the founding members Ann Kendall. It coincided with Gardening Australia’s Costa Georgiadis, who was in town for the Gardening Expo in Nambour. It was a very moving moment for me as the last time I saw Costa he was opening the garden with the beautiful Ann and her troopers. We also planted a tree for the late, great John Stokes. It was incredibly moving hearing Costa talk about Ann and John and what the community means to him and all of us there. It was great to catch up with him and all the wonderful people that keep the garden blossoming, and I went home with a really warm feeling. Now I must reveal, I am not a gardener; I like looking at them but hate doing anything except mowing. Unlike my better half who loves potting plants and would probably pot me if I stood still long enough. Footnote – if I disappear, check her pots! I got home feeling a little melancholy
but ready to watch the footy and am greeted with piles of trimmings and a chock-a-block green bin and the news she has lost her favourite little trowel. She suggested I lay down some plastic and tip the bin out; I decided to tip it in the back of the ute, pick up all the other stuff and go to the dump, of course sifting through it all to find the $5 implement. Old mate insists I put the plastic tarp in the back and tip everything on to it to make it easier. I get to the dump, pull on the plastic and it comes out by itself with not one bit of green stuff on it. Eventually I get it all out and I go through it on the ground – prickles, mud and all – and I look up and there is a little kid watching me from the car next to me and I must have looked like Scomo or Boris sifting through the mess they made wondering what went wrong. Tip fee $18, $5 tool still missing, other tool covered in mud and prickles. I get home to be greeted by, “I found my trowel. Silly me it was where I left it last week.” Costa could make a really good episode for non-gardeners out of this debacle. RIP Ann, forever missed John and thank you Costa.

arrison Ford turned 80 this week. How can Han Solo be an octogenarian? Like every other sentient being with a pulse, I am, of course, in shock the sexiest man alive could be 80. Here is a list of five reasons why Harrison Ford has repeatedly shown us why he is potentially the sexiest human alive. 1. His name is real. How did his parents intuitively know to give their baby boy a movie star ready moniker? Harrison Ford could have backfired as a name if the owner of it wasn’t legitimately oozing coolness. 2. Harrison Ford can build stuff. For real! The actor was a carpenter to help pay his bills when he was a struggling actor learning the ropes. But the takeaway from this is the legend can actually build stuff with his hands like a true-blue hero, the same as Jesus and Bob The Builder. Harrison the hot chippie met George Lucas at the director’s house while he was building shelves. George asked Harry to come along for auditions for his Star Wars movie and the rest is beautiful history.
3. Harrison rocks a tweed print and a jaunty hat. In my opinion the most swoon-worthy outfit is Indy Jones with his whip and khaki vest. In a close second place is Han Solo in his black vest and some sort of space-age guns strapped to his thigh. But in real life Harrison loves a hat and a pair of tweed pants. How lucky is his wife, Calista Flockhart. 4. He is a pilot in real life and executed a perfect emergency landing on a golf course less than a decade ago. Harrison also often uses his own chopper and flies it himself to look for lost hikers near his Wyoming ranch. He has also donated half of his ranch to conservation. 5. He married Carrie Fisher, his Star Wars franchise co-star, and they had five kids and lived happily ever after in Hollywood. Okay. That totally never happened but they did have a fling while filming. And what about the coolest line ever being spoken between the Hollywood couple. Moments before Han Solo is frozen alive in carbonite, Princess Leia says he loves him. “I know,” he responds. Happy birthday Harrison Ford!

According to recent research, 83 per cent of global consumers agree that chocolate should be both tasty and healthy. Baked rainbow veggie chips This healthy alternative to store-bought crisps is not only super tasty, but are super easy to make. Great to pack in your kid’s lunch box, or for snacks on the go, these will be new favourites in your household. Ideal for when those 3pm munchies hit. Serves: 1 standard bowl of veggie chips | Prep time: 10 minutes | Baking time: 1hour, 20 minutes
Ingredients • Half an orange sweet potato • Half a purple sweet potato • 2 beetroots • 1 carrot • 4 radish
• Half a bunch of kale, leaves removed • 3 tablespoons Chef’s Choice Olive Oil • Pinch of Every Organics Slow Smoked Sea Salt
Method 1. Preheat oven to 150°C. Slice all of the vegetables very finely. 2. Place the beetroot slices onto a piece of parchment paper and sprinkle generously with normal salt. Allow the beetroot to weep for around 15 minutes. 3. Blot the excess liquid from the beetroot with a paper towel. Place into a large bowl and add the smoked salt and olive oil. Use your hands to mix and coat each vegetable well. 4. Layer each vegetable one by one onto a large baking tray lined with parchment paper. You may need two trays. Place each tray onto a shelf in the oven and set a timer for 15 minutes. 5. At 15 minutes, change the trays around and bake for another 15 minutes. Repeat this process four times or until each chip is crispy. *Note: The beetroot and radish chips will crisp up once they air dry on a cooling rack so don’t worry so much about these ones crisping up in the oven.

AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD)
The ear canal cleans itself with a waxy secretion called cerumen. Sometimes, the wax builds up and causes symptoms, including mild deafness and a sensation of fullness inside the ear. This condition is harmless and easily treated, so it is somewhat surprising that some people put up with blocked ears for long periods of time. Your long-term hearing loss may have a quick solution! The Hear4Good clinic uses a couple of methods to remove wax blockages. Micro curettage is when a small tool is used in conjunction with a head-worn microscope to manually scrape the material out. The other method is micro suction, which is a very gentle process that uses a medical vacuum system to
extract the material. Before using either, the clinician will examine the ear canal and usually suggest the use of wax softening drops. It is also advised to have a hearing assessment after the procedure. Ear syringing has fallen out of favour lately due to potential risks; cotton buds cause more blockages than they remove; and ear candling is a complete waste of time and possibly dangerous. Candles belong in birthday cakes, not ears! Ear wax removal is a task that should be undertaken by a professional. Age-related macular degeneration is a chronic but painless disease that affects a special layer of cells in the eye called the retinal pigment epithelium, at the base of the retina. It can cause significant and irreversible loss to your central vision. It can be caused by both genetic and environmental factors. Those with a family history have a 50 per cent chance of developing AMD. There are two stages to AMD – early and late. In the early stage of AMD progression, the waste products of the retina begin to accumulate underneath the macula. These accumulations clump together and are known as drusen. During an eye examination the drusen appear as yellow spots on your retina. On OCT imaging, these can be seen as small bumps beneath the retina. This early stage of AMD may not cause visual problems but can lead to late-stage AMD. Loss of vision usually indicates the later stages of AMD, and there are two forms of late-stage AMD – dry and wet. In dry AMD, it is a slow form of the disease which results in a gradual loss of vision. Dry AMD can develop into wet AMD so regular check-ups and monitoring with an Amsler grid are important. What is spondylolisthesis?
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a degenerative eye disease with a strong genetic component. It can result in reduced central vision but spares peripheral vision. It usually affects people over the age of 50 years and becomes more common with increasing age. After the age of 75 years, one in three people have some form of AMD. There are two forms of AMD – dry and the wet form. Treatment is only available for wet AMD. This is an in-rooms procedure, through delivery of a drug via an injection into the affected eye. The drug targets and blocks the action of growth factors that drive leakage and bleeds from blood vessels deep within the retina. Treatment starts at four-weekly intervals for the first three months, with the aim to extend thereafter with most patients maintaining a treatment interval between eight to 12 weeks. However, long-term treatment is required to maintain vision. The key is early diagnosis and intervention to maximise response to treatment and minimise loss of vision.
Chronic knee pain doesn’t have to be met with surgery or medication. Radiofrequency ablation is a non-surgical procedure that involves the insertion of a needle-like probe into the skin. This probe delivers radiofrequency waves to target nerves that are causing pain. Radiofrequency ablation is a safe and effective procedure with minimal recovery time. The results are demonstrating 12 months pain relief and functional improvement specifically for knee pain and osteoarthritis. RFA is especially beneficial to those seeking an alternative to surgery and are not getting the desired results from non-operative measures such as injection therapy and lifestyle modifications. The procedure is completed in approximately 20 minutes, with sedation. Unlike surgery, RFA involves no incision. The patient may experience some discomfort at the site for a short period, but this discomfort can be treated with common over-the-counter medication. Spondylolisthesis is a condition of the spine where one of the vertebrae slips forward onto the bone below it. This can be due to high-impact sports, such as football, genetics and degeneration due to ageing. If the condition is left untreated, it can cause narrowing of the nerve channels, resulting in compression of nerves in the spine. Symptoms can include pain, tingling or heaviness in the lower back, buttocks and legs when walking, which is relieved by sitting or lying down or when bending forward, such as when pushing a shopping trolley. Pain can also increase when reaching overhead, such as when hanging washing on the line. Spondylolisthesis, depending on the severity, can be addressed with a simple laminectomy procedure or a spinal fusion procedure, which is performed by a highly skilled neurosurgeon and upon successful fusion, stops the abnormal movement in the vertebrae and improves pain symptoms. The importance of bowel cancer screening Bowel cancer is the third most common type of new diagnosed cancer in Australia and will affect around one in 13 people. Ninety-nine per cent of bowel cancer cases can be treated successfully if found early. Australia has a robust screening program for people at average or nearaverage risk of bowel cancer, with a faecal immunochemical test (FIT) recommended every two years for people aged between 50 and 74. This screening is very effective and should be an essential part of everyone’s health checks. Unfortunately, when bowel cancer is detected at later stages, there is a significant drop off in survival. Being aware of the symptoms of bowel cancer is also extremely important. If you see blood in your poo, have obvious changes in your bowel habit, experience weight loss that you can’t explain, extreme tiredness for no reason or have a lump or swelling in your abdomen, you should get in contact with your GP. OWNING A HOME AMONG THE GUM TREES The ability for many Australians to work from home has caused a surge in buyers heading for the hinterland. WORDS: Gail Forrer.
I
n May, CoreLogic data revealed Ninderry as a top area to record growth on the Sunshine Coast with house prices rising by 43.24 per cent, taking its median house value to $1.32 million. Valdora and Beerburrum house prices also rose by 42.3 per cent and 42.2 per cent respectively in the past 12 months. This takes their median house price to $1.41 million in Valdora and $935,051 in Beerburrum. One of the reason behind the surge in the sale of hinterland properties can be attributed to new style of working options. The internet made it possible, but it was COVID conditions that sent us home to work. This changed our way of thinking; no longer were we pressured to present at the office, and with the ability to communicate in quick time around the globe, we could live and work wherever we wanted. As a result more buyers are seeking large blocks of land in the hinterland. Ray White Buderim chief auctioneer and sales consultant Jake Loiero grew up in the Tanawha area and says he understands why sales in this area on the east side of the highways are attracting a lot of attention.
TIPS FOR BUYING ACREAGE:
“It’s a 10-minute drive to the beach and five minutes to shopping,” he says. However, he adds, importantly an acreage is the sort of place that has the “room for the toys”. He notes the auction of luxury residence 10 Kirby Court, Tanawha has attracted enquiry from all over Australia. Ray White agent Kathryn Willshire is a long-time agent in the Chevallum and Ilkley areas. She has seen a surge among buyers in the small acreage markets, but she also reports in the Ilkley area there are buyers who value the potential to purchase 10- to 40-acre blocks. “There are opportunities to find entry-level purchase prices with people
buying a shed and land all the way up to paying $3 million.” A property in Chevallum is gaining enormous interest both locally and interstate. “The five-bedroom property at 247 Dales Road, Chevallum attracted more than 20 people at the first open home last week,” Ms Willshire says. “It will be going to auction on July 30. Additionally, RE/MAX salesperson Nathan Beasley recently negotiated the sale of 16 Gallaghers Road, Tanawha. He says the eight-bedroom property with 10 garages is an example of having a block of land that allows for expansion in the direction that suits your work, family and/ or hobbies.

SEWERAGE AND WATER SUPPLY – Don’t assume the property will be connected to a central sewerage system or town water. If you’re buying a block with a home already built, it’s important to fully understand the sewerage system, or if there is one installed at all. Check whether it has council consents, and what its maintenance entails, as well as making sure any resource consents acquired are transferred to your name when you buy. This is absolutely essential as a sewerage system, or lack thereof, can be a costly item to fix. LAND COVENANTS – Rural land that’s been subdivided and developed will often be subject to a number of land covenants. The developer or the council usually set these to either limit the development’s impacts on neighbours or keep the standards of the area high. It’s important that you check with the vendor and always read the fine print, as covenants could affect your use of the land. hen it came to downsizing, 9 Elanora Avenue, Mooloolaba received an upmarket sale price, proving the timeless worth of an excellent
location when it sold for $4.35 million. HOME Sunshine Coast’s Alan Riley says the auction sale price of the fourbedroom, three-bathroom home could also be attributed to concerns around
building new homes. Because of this, he says, “people are showing interest in the finished product”. The home had been held by the same family since the 1980s. “And they had bought it when it was a couple of years old,” Mr Riley adds. Located in a north-facing position, Mr Riley says the home boasts magnificent views and is a rarity on the market, with the selling price reflecting its unique address. He says the four-week campaign attracted five registered bidders with three active bidders. Approximately 50 to 60 people attended the auction. Again position and downsizing were the reasons behind the successful weekend auction that saw a Buderim home fetch $1.3 million on the weekend.
