Real change for lowest paid

workers The Fair Work Commission’s decision to increase the minimum wage will help not just those on the lowest incomes but potentially all workers, and lead to sustainable wage growth in Australia.

B

arely a month ago Anthony Albanese was derided as a “loose unit” for endorsing a 5.1 per cent increase in the minimum wage. His rationale was, with 5.1 per cent inflation, the incomes of the lowest-paid Australians at least shouldn’t be going backwards.

Now the Fair Work Commission’s expert panel, which reviews the minimum wage each year, has announced a 5.2 per cent increase.

A “loose” decision? No. The reasons for lifting the pay of workers on the minimum wage by $40 a week are laid out in a long document.

The essence is this: even with rising inflation, the economy is strong. If we can’t lift wages to stop the lowest paid going backwards in these conditions, when will they ever rise?

The economic factors considered by the expert panel included: • real wages have fallen by about 2.5 per cent over the past two years; • economic growth is strong and appears set to continue; • employment and vacancies are growing;

• unemployment and underemployment are falling; • productivity has returned to steady growth of one to two per cent a year; • profits increased by 25 per cent in the past year.

While precise estimates are difficult, the minimum wage increase will affect about two per cent of Australian workers. The sectors most impacted will be retail and hospitality.

However, the Annual Wage Review also decides pay rates for those on awards.

This is about 23 per cent of Australian employees (19 per cent of males, 27 per cent of females). To these workers the panel has granted a 4.6 per cent pay rise.

This will help workers in aged care, disability care and other forms of nongovernment provided (but predominantly government-funded) care work.

For the majority of workers – about 35 per cent of whom are covered by an

enterprise bargaining agreement and 38 per cent on over-award payments or individual contracts – the decision’s impact will be indirect, though potentially significant.

Wage setting involves a combination of both market and institutional forces. The

Institutional forces such as employers’ policies, unions, labour laws and customary notions of ‘the going rate’ – as well as the level of supply and demand for workers with particular skills – shape the ultimate outcome within these upper and lower bounds.

This is where the expert panel’s decision is significant. It has implicitly challenged the strictures placed on wage increases by both federal and state governments over the past decade.

The panel’s decision follows a longstanding principle of Australian wages policy – pursued at least since the 1990s, when enterprise bargaining became the primary basis for wage increases.

This principle holds that some workers don’t and never will have the capacity to bargain effectively with their employers.

They need to be protected. As the decision states: “We agree with the RBA’s assessment and remain of the view that moderate and regular increases in minimum wages do not result in significant disemployment effects.”

This point doesn’t apply just to the lowest paid. Most Australians are concerned about the cost of living. After more than a decade of stagnant wages, people are looking for new directions. Mr Albanese’s election campaign recognised this, and pushed the issue constantly.

When Scott Morrison derided him as a loose unit for endorsing a $40-a-week pay rise for the lowest paid, he fundamentally misread the national mood. The Fair Work Commission’s expert panel has not.

This decision is a welcome continuation of its role to protect the lowest paid. It could well contribute to moving Australia to a trajectory of higher, but sustainable, wages growth.

Expo blooms to life Whether you’re new to gardening, are an old hand with a hoe or just want to soak up some gardeninspired colour and fun, Nambour Showgrounds is the place to be from July 8 to 10 as the Queensland Garden Expo blooms back to life.

he best of the gardening world is set to converge on the Sunshine Coast for a weekend full of colour, beauty and fun.

The Queensland Garden Expo is one of Australia’s most-loved gardening events and attracts more than 40,000 people though its gates each year.

The three-day event is not just one for enthusiastic green thumbs, and with interest in gardening blooming since the start of the pandemic, the expo offers displays, stalls and demonstrations for people of all ages and gardening stages.

This year gates will open on July 8 when more than 360 exhibitors will have everything gardening related on offer, including one of the largest ranges of plants in Queensland and all the latest in permaculture growing.

As one of the biggest injectors into the local economy, at more than $10 million each year, it is estimated 65 per cent of attendees are from outside the Sunshine Coast region.

This is even more significant in 2022 after a turbulent few years with a cancellation in 2020, and the 2021 expo affected by state boarder closures.

The program of speakers includes favourites such as Gardening Australia’s Costa Georgiadis, Sophie Thomson and Jerry Coleby-Williams, and regulars Phil Dudman, Claire Bickle, Kate Wall and Leonie Shanahan.

Event chairman Simon Smith says the team is looking forward to welcoming back many regular interstate gardening presenters, exhibitors and visitors.

“There is a real excitement building and we are sure that garden lovers will come out in force to take advantage of all the information and huge range of gardening products on display,” Mr Smith says.

Event manager Marion Beazley says the expo provides a wonderful opportunity to learn about all aspects of gardening and for those without a backyard, keeping indoor plants is catered for too.

“What makes our event so unique in gardening circles is that expo visitors have access to the best gardening minds in the country,” Ms Beazley says.

“This is both through the extensive three-day speaker program and by chatting directly to our growers representing the many nurseries exhibiting at the event.

“We have seen interest in gardening explode during the pandemic – people have taken to their gardens to grow their own food and to create a wonderful space to relax.

“We don’t see that slowing down as many have found a passion for gardening they never knew they had.

“Our young gardeners haven’t been forgotten about with lots of activities and workshops on offer to start them on their

gardening journey,” Ms Beazley adds.

The expo will even feature a plant clinic where visitors can ask questions, bring in leaves or photos for identification, and receive a plethora in garden and indoor plant advice.

The event will once again celebrate organic gardening and permaculture in

the Giant Kitchen Garden, which is a collaboration of many groups from across the region to help create a piece of gardening paradise.

COVER STORY Ms Shanahan openly speaks about her battle with Lyme disease after a diagnosis in 2014. She made a career shift to horticulture at the age of 30, looking for a more meaningful role after a background in business.

“I first studied horticulture in 1994 as a ticket to get overseas,” she says. “I wanted to work in Third World countries, particularly Cambodia, to help grow food again.

“After horticulture I studied permaculture and loved it – it all made sense. I continued studying and dabbling in organic and biodynamic gardening and in 2005 I founded the Edible School Gardens program on the Sunshine Coast, discovering my love of teaching and changing the lives of children – one plant at a time.

“I love the gardening world as people share their knowledge, their joy and plants with you and I get to visit lots of sensational gardens.”

After years of keeping a low profile while healing from Lyme disease, Ms Shanahan is excited to be back doing what she loves.

“My motto is ‘Your health is your wealth’,” she says. “Food is the basis of our health – it is either going to take you towards health, or away.

“Each piece of real food we eat is programmed to rejuvenate, repair, restore or rebuild our body’s cells, our brain, our organs – all parts of your anatomy.

“Health-giving food will have you functioning at your highest capacity, feeling energised, well, and free of disease. Healthy food is the basis of all healing.”

As part of the Queensland Garden Expo, Ms Shanahan will speak in the kitchen garden and cook’s garden programs, where she will share how to set up a vegetable garden and how to create affordable, homegrown salads.

Ms Shanahan says she is looking forward to the “reunion” of gardening presenters, sharing her knowledge as well as learning new things herself.

PLANTING THE SEEDS FOR PERMACULTURE EDUCATION No stranger to the world of permaculture and organic gardening, Leonie Shanahan has a passion for establishing a connection between what grows in the ground and what you put in your body.

Anyone who grew up on the Sunshine Coast in the past two decades may remember Ms Shanahan attending their primary school to help students plant and grow permaculture gardens as part of her Edible School Gardens program.

The author, educator and presenter endeavours to use her experience to empower and educate everyone to appreciate the value of homegrown food from their backyards, balconies, schools or community gardens.

1. Journal time – Invest in an exercise book so you can start a garden journal. In this you can record simple things so that you have a benchmark to look back on and say, ‘wow look how far I have come’. Note basic things like the day you start the journal, when you begin your first project, what you first planted and where you got it from.

2. Photo records – Take pictures of what you do and do it at regular intervals from fixed locations so you have reference points for growth, but also time. It is the best way to see how things are going and growing and it gives you a marker to refer to in following seasons to see when and how things are comparing with previous years.

5. Do your research – There is so much information online and through social media but like anything, don’t get too far down rabbit holes and lose sight with the practical aspect of just getting out there and having a grow.

A STEP BACK IN TIME The Sunshine Coast branch of the Nursery & Garden Industry Queensland held the inaugural expo 37 years ago, with the aim of providing the public with expert advice and information on a range of gardening subjects in an enjoyable and accessible format. The first event, in 1985, was a one-day event with 30 exhibitors, 300 visitors, five workshops and a plant clinic. Guided by a dedicated group of volunteers, the expo quickly grew over the years to become the three-day event it is today. Gardening is one of Australia’s favourite recreational activities and the show is still as relevant now as it was all those years ago.

nown as the ‘hub of the hinterland’, Nambour is thriving as a place full of arts, culture, health and business.

Located in the geographical centre of the Kabi Kabi traditional land, Nambour is a place of great significance.

Nambour’s name comes from the First Nation’s word ‘Namba’, referring to the red-flowering tea tree of the same name.

Thanks to freshwater creeks and rich soil, the area was used as a place of meeting and resting while the central location saw the population swell during important festivities or hunting and gathering drives.

Once the capital of the Maroochy Shire, the centre has undergone a series of changes over the past 20 years, especially as other areas of the region have grown.

Yet its reputation is again developing as a creative, welcoming community as the town continues to support the needs of its residents and surrounding hinterland communities.

As part of this, there is plenty happening to reinvigorate the historic heart of the Sunshine Coast, especially with the Nambour Centre Activation Project (NCAP), which will shape the town for the next 15 years.

The project includes proposed plans to repurpose the Nambour administration building and library, the Nambour (Namba) Place Revitalisation Project (NPRP) and activation of the centre through arts, events, heritage and more.

Sunshine Coast Council division 10 councillor David Law says the town has many great aspects he hopes the whole Sunshine Coast community can be aware of and appreciate.

Meanwhile he says the NPRP draws on previous engagement and planning with community groups and council, outlining a vision for Nambour’s future.

“This project will provide a clear and detailed understanding of how the town centre will look and function, how much it will cost, and provide a roadmap for when each stage of construction can occur.

“Further feedback and collaboration with the community will occur and I am encouraging our residents and local businesses to get involved at those points.”

“We have some great shows lined up in Nambour and consistent activation is what is going to make Nambour into a key destination for live music,” Ms Kirwin says.

“We’ve watched the Nambour Forecourt Live events grow in attendance over the past year, and our boutique music events on Queen Street and Black Box Theatre are also gaining traction as people realise there’s things happening in our town.

“I love supporting and promoting independent artists, programming fun community live music events, boutique festivals and hosting intimate live music experiences in Nambour – and there are more exciting shows coming.”

Improvements to Nambour Aquatic Centre continue, with two new slides due to open soon The council is also making it easier and more cost effective for theatres, bars, nightclubs and hotel traders to establish in the Nambour Special Entertainment Precinct, slashing development application fees by 50 per cent to incentivise new business start-ups.

Exciting things are also happening at Nambour Aquatic Centre with the installation of two water slides.

The colourful slides, measuring 60 and 67 metres, will join the zero-depth and fully accessible splash pad already open as part of the new Splash Park.

The slides will open in the coming months, with an official celebration in September.

A Sunshine Coast LGBTI group is one of 55 local organisations sharing in more than $90,000. The LGBTI Community Ageing Network will benefit from Sunshine Coast Council’s latest round of Minor Grants as it prepares for its upcoming event I’m Still Standing. “The event has been designed to connect older members of the LGBTI community with health, wellbeing and supportive services that provide guidance and assistance to the community as they age,” LGBTI Community Ageing Network co-chair Jenny Sargent says.

Sunshine Coast-developed Bakslap has signed a major distribution agreement with National Skin Cancer Centres (NSCC). The innovative lotion applicator will be available at 22 skin cancer centres across Raphael McGowan and skin cancer Australia and Bakslap founder expert Professor David Wilkinson Raphael McGowan says the deal is a major achievement to help reach more people. “I’m really thrilled to have the Bakslap applicator available at each NSCC reception across Australia as it will play a part in reinforcing sun safety and helping people prevent skin cancers,” he says. Mr McGowan created Bakslap in 2017 following the death of his sister Tess in 2012, who was diagnosed with inoperable melanoma in the middle of her back.

he much-anticipated Sunshine Coast celebration of arts and culture, Horizon Festival, is gearing up for a stellar line-up as it makes its return in 2022.

It comes as the festival officially unveils its program, which will include 10 days and nights of music, visual art, performance, dance, family entertainment, spoken word, comedy and workshops from local acts and nationally recognised artists Affected by COVID in 2020 and 2021, this year the festival will be back live, up close and personal from Friday, August 26 to Sunday, September 4.

Horizon Festival director Hannah Clissold says the themes of people, arts, culture and place are at the heart of this year’s program.

“It has been a strange two years and we are delighted to unveil a program that invites everyone to come together, in person, and experience the beauty, wonder and talent that

We think being a regional location is what makes it so great! The feeling of community and collaboration is something we seek out and this is what the Sunny Coast represents. We think living and working in such a beautiful location makes an impact on the art too, which reflects back in the work created here.

As kick-off approaches for game two of the State of Origin, two bakeries will fire up the ovens for an interstate battle of their own.

This year, Queensland’s Beefy’s will go up against New South Wales’ Glenorie Bakery to raise funds for children’s hospitals as part of the Harvey Norman Pie of Origin challenge.

The bakery that raises the most funds through pie sales will raise the trophy high, but it is the children who are the real winners.

Since this competition kicked off in 2011 it has raised more than $230,000 for the Queensland Children’s Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for vital equipment.

Beefy’s Big Queenslander Pie makes an appearance just once a year as part of Pie of Origin, and this year the aim is to make kids and their families smile.

“This year, both Glenorie and Beefy’s are donating the funds to create kids’ zones and entertainment options within the hospitals. Spaces that will bring lots of happiness,” Beefy’s Mark Hobbs says.

CONFERENCE EXPLORES REGION’S OLYMPIC READINESS

A

n array of business and tourism figures converged for a special conference hosted by the Sunshine Coast Business Council (SCBC) at the University of the Sunshine Coast recently to explore how the region can prepare and benefit from the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

As a beloved tourist destination and one of the fastest-growing regions in Australia, the Sunshine Cost appears to have a great platform for Brisbane 2032.

A range of experts explored the area’s readiness for the Games at the conference, dubbed Sunshine Coast Regional Tourism: Preparing for 2032.

SCBC chair Sandy Zubrinich says there is a great deal of expectation of what the Games can do to stimulate economic growth and build capacity for the region.

“As a delivery partner for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Sunshine Coast has a lot to look forward to and much to plan for, to ensure we are making the most of this opportunity to showcase our region to the rest of the world,” she says.

The conference brought together key subject matter experts in the areas of tourism, hospitality services, economic

Ted O’Brien MP, Margy Osmond from the Tourism & Transport Forum and Andrew Brodie from Sunshine Coast Airport development and infrastructure, including the keynote speaker, Tourism & Transport Forum CEO Margy Osmond.

Ms Osmond’s experience in the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games and International World Masters Games provided a unique perspective into the planning and decision-making processes required for hosting an Olympic scale event. “With the Sunshine Coast’s population estimated to grow by nearly

three per cent annually over the next 20 years, the seamless delivery and movement of tourists within the region will be key,” she said.

Joining Ms Osmond at the conference was Urbis director Kate Meyrick. Ms Meyrick’s presentation explored how best to activate a vibrant tourism region.

The event also featured a panel of tourism leaders sharing insights into the region’s tourism infrastructure, capacity,

demand and challenges, including Visit Sunshine Coast chair David Ryan.

Mr Ryan has a wealth of experience in the tourism industry and holds board positions with Sunshine Coast Airport and the Sunshine Coast Events Board.

“The Sunshine Coast has a relatively short window of opportunity to build on our natural strengths and create infrastructure to drive the region’s tourism economy forward,” he said. “There are crucial infrastructure decisions needed to be made about access, attractions, activities, amenity and accommodation that can both meet the needs of a rapidly growing population and an increasingly competitive tourism market.”

Others on the panel included Tourism and Hospitality Services AustralAsia managing director Rodger Powell, and Karen Wales from Colliers International, with closing comments by Sunshine Coast Council’s Economic & Community Development Group executive Greg Laverty.

A PASSION FOR PAINTING A Maroochydore printer turned artist loves the challenge of bringing his paintings to life. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

former printer with a passion for drawing has an impressive collection of art, decades in the making.

Maroochydore’s Max McDonald fell in love with art after a family tragedy led him to become the first person in Australia to colour a picture for a newspaper editorial.

At 88 years of age, Mr McDonald has painted everything from the sheep farm he lived on to Queen Elizabeth II, the Dalai Lama and Muhammad Ali. Mr McDonald says his love of artwork came after his father was tragically gassed during World War I. Charity organisation Legacy stepped in to help

the family pay for schooling, and also helped Mr McDonald secure work with a printer where he began printing for The Australasian Post, Your Garden, Home Beautiful and other commercial work.

“I was the first person in Australia to colour a picture for a newspaper editorial,” he says. “My job after being taught to colour pictures for print, by hand, was to correct each negative and positive picture with a small brush.

“We would then print the yellow, then the red, then the blue and finally the black.

“We would do this one at a time.

Nothing like today’s automatic colour printers,” he adds.

He says during his career he met

three Swiss artists who taught him about reproductive art, a process that involves measuring an image out for repurposing.

“They were wonderful artists; I admired their work,” he says. “They also taught me how to paint and draw, and introduced me to the European style of art.”

It was when he left the magazine industry and moved to a 1138-hectare sheep farm in 1968 that he began his collection.

Having printed famous individuals from throughout history, Mr McDonald says he loves how art connects him with time. “I think what I love about painting is it’s like a snapshot of the past. I can remember everything I did on the day that I work on a painting.

“It’s like a photograph for me; it brings me a lot of self-fulfilment.

“To see the time and what I have worked on come to life, I get a feeling of satisfaction when I look at the paintings.

“I’m inspired by the challenge too. If I see something, I do it, because I believe I have the skill.”

Mr McDonald says it can take up to two weeks to complete some works, especially as he measures everything out first with a pencil sketch.

“Art reproduction takes me the longest time. I have to draft it out. I can’t just go ahead and draw it because it has to be exact – I have to be exact.

“I can take a tiny little photo and do a rough measure for repurposing. I use my background of study from architectural drawing to help me figure out rough dimensions.”

As he edges close to 90, Mr McDonald is hoping to share his work with the wider community. Anyone interested in seeing his collection can email maxmcdonald 1968@gmail.com.

GRANTS HELP JUNIOR ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMPS Several Sunshine Coast education facilities are growing the next generation of environmental champions after being named recipients in the 2022 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants.

Glass House Early Education Centre, Peachester State School, Landsborough Community Kindergarten, Little Village Early Learning Buderim, Goodstart Early Learning Buderim and Caloundra, and Caloundra Christian College Early Learning Centre will receive $1000 each.

The funding will help centres develop projects focusing on sustainable food production, improving waste management practices or enhancing native habitats.

“We are committed to helping our communities grow their sustainable practices for a better, greener tomorrow,” Woolworths operations manager Peta Hartley says. “Enabling our schools to create practical hands-on teaching activities and programs through our grants is just one way we are helping to drive long-lasting sustainable education.”

YOUNG VOLUNTEER JUST LOVES TO HELP OUT A 10-year-old Caloundra City Private School student is proving you are never too young to volunteer.

Always smiling, Sienna Mills is a junior park runner who has volunteered on 29 sperate occasions at parkruns in Baringa, Brightwater, Noosa and on the Gold Coast parkruns.

Participating in roles including timekeeping, photography and tail walking, Sienna is one of few youths across the country to achieving this level of volunteering.

“I love volunteering as it helps the local community and I get to meet people,” she says.

“I have been doing parkrun since the age of four and it is lovely to see people on a Saturday morning.

“I love to be the photographer to grab their smiles on the course, but my favourite role is handing out tokens when they have just finished five kilometres walking or running.”

Sienna also competed in the Sunshine Coast Kokoda Challenge on June 18. With a team from school, she walked 18 kilometres and individually raised almost $100 for the Kokoda Youth Foundation.

SUNSHINE COAST RECOGNISED INTERNATIONALLY AS A UNESCO BIOSPHERE Last week gave us something to really celebrate with the entire Sunshine Coast local government area being declared a Biosphere by UNESCO. Pretty much that means that globally the region is now recognised as an international site of excellence and an area of natural beauty.

This has been years in the making by the team at Sunshine Coast Council and the Biosphere credentials celebrate the Sunshine Coast’s people and nature, inviting locals and visitors alike to live, learn, work and play sustainably alongside active conservation.

From a tourism perspective, it also makes the Sunshine Coast the only place in the world where three UNESCO Biosphere Reserves align alongside the existing Noosa Biosphere Reserve

Sunshine Coast Libraries has introduced a new mobile library timetable to better reflect community demand and patterns of use.

The new schedule, now in place, has changed for some current stops, and new stops have been introduced. The new timetable will provide a more flexible, targeted service that meets community demand for library services.

More people are choosing to move to the Sunshine Coast and to ensure everyone has access to a library, council reviewed our mobile library service.

The new timetable ensures more equitable access to library services across the region.

UNITYWATER NAMES ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

VIETNAM VET SHARES STORY OF TRAUMA TO HELP OTHERS A Vietnam veteran is hoping by sharing his story he can help improve the wellbeing of people living with posttraumatic stress disorder.

Dave Morgan’s book The Invisible Trauma is an “honest and hopeful account” he believes will resonate with anyone who PTSD touches.

Growing up in Caloundra, Mr Morgan and twin brother Don were one of the first cohorts to attend Caloundra State High School when it opened in the early 1960s.

Then on January 1, 1969, he left his family for Vietnam as part of the 104 Signal Squadron, serving at several fire support bases and dealing with attacks from the Viet Cong.

During one of those attacks, his pit hole engulfed him, and after he returned Australia, Mr Morgan began reliving that experience night after night.

“With the book I am sharing my story with PTSD and those of other veterans in the hope to guide and improve the well being of mental health and lifestyles of our Military veterans, first responders, or anyone that suffers with PTSD including their families,” Mr Morgan says.

“My family with five veterans and four doctors has contributed to the book.

Joshua Lavers has dreamed of becoming an engineer since he was a child. And he’s a step closer to realising it as the latest recipient of Unitywater’s Bright Future in Engineering Scholarship.

The University of the Sunshine Coast Civil Engineering student says the scholarship will enable him to focus on his final years of study. “Becoming a civil engineer has been an ambition I have held since I was a child, with dreams of being part of exciting projects and delivering solutions that improve quality of life and the environment,” he says.

Mr Lavers is the ninth recipient of the scholarship, which has been offered to outstanding USC students since 2014.

The speed limit on a section of road in Montville will soon be permanently reduced through the township.

Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton says the existing 50-kilometre speed limit will be reduced to 40 kilometres.

“Transport and Main Roads undertook a speed limit review following the Sunshine Coast Council’s installation of several raised zebra pedestrian crossings on this section of Main Street during the last few years,” he says. “These crossings have resulted in a reduction in the speed of motorists travelling through the township, and the new 40-kilometre per hour speed limit will be more in line

with the lower prevailing travel speeds.”

The one-kilometre section of road through the centre of Montville will be lowered this week.

AN UNEQUAL EQUALITY

WHEN THERE ARE NO WORDS

When we reach a point where ‘inclusion’ just excludes a different group of people, what have we really gained, asks Jane Stephens.

Ashley Robinson reflects on the changing language and the loss of some classic Aussie words and phrases.

O

ur society has come a long way where diversity and inclusion are concerned.

Our new parliament more closely reflects our society than the old one did.

As a nation, we are making great strides in honouring the original inhabitants of this land we live in.

And this whole month is dedicated worldwide to Pride.

Our communities are better because they are made up of people with all different characteristics. In embracing difference, we are culturally richer, more understanding and our world view is broader.

But I can’t help but think the way we approach so-called inclusion too often just creates a greater number of exclusive groups.

Bear with me on this.

Policies and practices geared towards diversity and inclusion rightly aim to afford equal opportunity for all, but when we require numerical or proportionate representation, we end up with the opposite to equal. When we laud or promote one group over another, the

exclusion just shifts. When only those who are part of a specific group are allowed an opinion or a voice the problem is added to, not solved.

I am in almost every way a part of the majority: I have Anglo-Saxon roots, am heterosexual, educated, employed and have a stable home.

While these attributes afford me ‘privilege’ in our society, most of these were not my choice – in the same way as someone born in a brown skin, into a religious minority group or who is same-sex attracted had no say.

It doesn’t mean I can’t work to understand others’ experiences. It doesn’t mean I live only to look after those who are just like me.

Majority is not a dirty word.

Democracy is built on it. There is no shame in it.

Surely we should aim for something better that swinging a pendulum back and forth. Respect is too often missing from the list of aims in discussions on inclusion: respect for self, others and for our differences.

Without any one of these, we just continue to perpetuate exclusion.

he dictionary, or at least our delivery of words and sayings, has certainly changed over the last few decades.

Words and sayings I was used to growing up, which is admittedly more than six decades ago, are nearly extinct, like ‘trouble and strife’ (wife), ‘ginger beers’ (ears), I’m ‘Lee Marvin’ (starving).

‘Fair suck of the sauce bottle’ was prevalent as well as ‘what was the John Dory?’, meaning what’s the goss?

I’ve been thinking about growing up and some of the things that used to get tossed up. Dad used to say to me after an ill-fated go at folding up his tarp, ‘that looks like a dog’s breakfast’.

But it was more the discipline ones that got me, like ‘I will count to three and then…’ which is why I couldn’t count past three for years as I never hung around to find out what came after it.

Then there was, ‘I will get the wooden spoon (second drawer)’ or ‘you are in so much trouble, wait until your father gets home’ and the list goes on. When he did get home he would say things like, ‘Ill knock your

block off’ or ‘you are as thick as two short planks’. Other favourites included ‘don’t pull the wool over my eyes’, ‘you have Buckley’s chance of getting that’, and ‘better than a kick up the backside’.

I hardly hear any of the above anymore and I suppose some of those phrases could be deemed as bullying these days, which is pretty sad. What is also a bit disappointing is we seem to have picked up a lot of American and Kiwi phrases these days with things like ‘choice’, ‘cuz’ and ‘bro’ rather than ‘sweet’, ‘cobber’ and ‘mate’.

The worst offender these days is ‘absolutely’. Talk about overused. And hardly ever do we here the ripsnorter ‘bloody ripper’ or ‘you beauty’, which is a real shame. They seemed to have been consumed or made extinct by the buzz words of a new generation. In my time ‘sick’, ‘fully sick’, ‘filthy’ or ‘dawwg’ weren’t words of enthusiasm or joy but these days they are.

It’s probably time I ‘put a sock in it’, ‘do the Harold Holt’ and go get a ‘dog’s eye’.

SALAD DAYS ARE OVER As lettuce prices skyrocket, Sami Muirhead reckons if we don’t laugh we’ll cry, so she offers a few words to make you smile.

T

he so-called Devil’s lettuce (not kale, that is Satan’s salad) is now cheaper per gram than God’s lettuce. Okay, lettuce go to the big topic this week: the price of fruit and vegetables.

I feel so middle-aged with all of my friends and family focussing on the sky-high price of lettuce. Or lettuces? What is the plural of lettuce? Lettuce cups?

Heads of lettuce? Lettuces? Let us all agree, it is easier to just say romaine.

“Crazy times when the Colonel has to bring cabbage into the burger fold” So, over the past year overall food and beverage prices rose by 4.3 per cent, with beef and vegetables both up more than 12 per cent. Rising fuel, energy and fertiliser costs have all contributed to price increases around the world. On top of this we have supply chain disruptions and shortages thanks to China’s COVID lockdowns and Russian’s awful invasion

of Ukraine. It could just be the tip of the iceberg lettuce with soaring costs.

One report was a shop charging $12 for a lettuce. Then KFC announced it was using a blend of cabbage and lettuce in its burgers. Crazy times when the Colonel has to bring cabbage into the burger fold.

Even the Queensland Police tweeted about lettuce prices, writing, “Police have commenced an investigation into the price of lettuce, just cos”. If we cannot laugh, we will cry so to stop the tears here are a few of the best lettuce jokes doing the rounds: 1. What do you call those dead pieces of green stuff left in the bottom of a bowl of Caesar salad? The last romaines. Now lettuce pray for them.

2. There was a race between a lettuce, a faucet and ketchup. The lettuce was a-head, the faucet was still running, and the ketchup was trying to ketchup.

3. What type of lettuce did they serve on the Titanic? Iceberg.

So here is hoping the prices of the humble lettuce do not keep going up or the kids of today will never be able to afford their own home or their own Caesar salads.

It will be a food based on folk lore of ye olden times. Hydroponic lettuce may just about be cheaper otherwise.

I’ve heard pros and cons from both buyers and sellers over the years, and most of the time, these pros and cons are looking at the same element of the process but from different angles.

THE RISE OF AUCTIONS AS A SELLING TOOL When it comes to selling property, REIQ’s Matt Diesel says success comes when you have a plan tailor made for you. WORDS: Gail Forrer.

R

EIQ Sunshine Coast zone chair Matt Diesel says conditions relating to COVID pushed up the number of Sunshine Coast auctions until they reached about 90 per cent of property sales, leaving 10 per cent of transactions via private treaty.

He says since 2020, markets have been changing and growing weekly, and auctions are able to reflect these conditions. But ultimately, auctions are another tool in the agent’s toolbox and should be used accordingly.

There is no such thing as a “one style fit all” selling strategy, he says.

“It depends on the market and property; you need to tailor it for that property and the sellers,” Mr Diesel says. “For the seller, auctions can show the property is not under- or overpriced.”

Traditionally, auctions have been a preferred mode of selling in the southern states, but not Queensland.

Mr Diesel says this is due to their increased price transparency.

“The agents can list figures that are considered within 10 per cent of

the selling price – this gives buyers more of an understanding of what they are able to purchase.

“Without that price guide, it can be trickier for buyers,” he says.

“Prospective buyers can do all the work – gaining building inspections and finance and then it can turn out to be right out of their price range and a waste of time.

“It can be very frustrating for buyers,” he adds, suggesting that making indicative selling figures available would be beneficial to buyers.

He says Queensland agents would provide a price guide until about a decade ago when a few unscrupulous agents who under-quoted prices caused the legislation to be changed and the process ceased.

“It was using a sledgehammer to fix the problem, when probably all it needed was for those agents to be fined,” he says.

As the market continues to change, Mr Diesel says the percentages between auction and private treaty sales are evening out.

Twenty years ago, Ray White Caloundra principal Andrew Garland completed his position as a banking and finance lawyer in the residential construction finance area at the law firm MinterEllison and went into real estate.

He says the first real office he worked with provided specific and expert training in property auctions.

To this day, he believes that thorough training is an absolute requisite for conducting successful auctions, and auctions are the best way to sell property.

“Auctions have less days on the market and gain higher prices,” he adds.

Mr Garland conducts online auctions and recent sales include 58 Albert Street, Shelley Beach for $2,295,000 and $2.5 million for 8 Ernest Street, Kings Beach, which were record street prices.

However, he says, the agent must do the work to ensure a successful sale. ‘If the agent doesn’t have the buyers lined up, the auctioneer has no one to sell to,” he says.

THE AUCTION PROCESS The auction process is strictly defined by legislation to ensure fairness. Legislation requires all people buying at auction to provide their names, addresses and proof of identity before bidding. This information must be provided for a bid to be accepted during an auction. The bidder will be provided with a number, which must be displayed if they make a bid during the auction.

Some tips on bidding at auction include: • Ensure the auctioneer can see you.

• Hold up your bidder number and call out your bid in an audible voice.

• There’s the option to call out an exact amount, or indicate the increment you wish to increase the previous bid by (this increment may be suggested by the auctioneer).

At the start of the auction, the auctioneer will announce if the property is to be sold with or without a reserve price. It is also important to keep to your budget during the auction because if you are the successful bidder, you will be the new owner of the property.

T

he Sea Pearl complex on Mooloolaba again proved its value on the weekend when it was sold under the hammer for an impressive $6,580,000.

Richard Scrivener of Next Property Group says the stunning three-bedroom sub-penthouse apartment at 1002/20 First Avenue, Mooloolaba boasts the type of spectacular views that place it in a very special category.

After the complex’s penthouse, which sold for $11 million, the subpenthouse (featuring four secure underground parking places) fetched the next record price in the Sea Pearl complex.

Mr Scrivener says the auction attracted a crowd of about 80 people and there were four registered bidders.

The auction went smoothly, with two keen bidders battling it out to the end. Finally, a New Zealand family who owned other property in the area made the successful bid and satisfied the vendors who had originally brought the unit off the plan.

Mr Scrivener described the price as ‘astonishing’ but says this proves

out after a round of enthusiastic bidding.

Mr Whisker adds the price is a “fantastic” outcome for the vendor.
