Did you know there are about 1000 homeless people on the Sunshine Coast on any given day? It’s a sobering figure. The face of homelessness has changed too, with many young working families having to turn to caravan parks for accommodation due to a lack of affordable housing and rising living costs. And with many more locals forced to couch surf or sleep in their car, the actual figures are probably much higher than reported. Everyone deserves a safe place to call home and as the weather turns colder, sleeping rough becomes even tougher for those who are forced to face the elements. For over a decade, supporters of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout have provided essential support to tens of thousands of Australians and this year is no exception. On June 23, a group of very special

New mums turn to public

system Expectant parents are being priced out of private obstetrics care, and it’s leading to more strain on an under-resourced public health system. An overhaul of the sector is needed, say health experts.

Dr Pecoraro says a reboot of the entire sector is needed, with a focus on Medicare and private health insurance. “The federal government hasn’t had the courage or the conviction to stand up to the private health insurers and make sure that they cover pregnancy in all the policies,” he says. Dr Pecoraro says it is “cruelty and sexism” for women to face significantly higher private health insurance costs in order to be covered for pregnancy and birth. “And Medicare isn’t blameless in that either – we’ve had a Medicare rebate freeze for specialists for six years,” he says. Melbourne obstetrician Bronwyn Hamilton agrees. She says the Medicare rebate barely touches the surface of running a private clinic. “Unfortunately, if out-of-pocket costs didn’t exist we would actually lose money for each patient we took on for their pregnancy and birth,” Dr Hamilton says. The Medicare rebate of $329.70 towards charges for the ‘planning and management’ of a pregnancy does not cover her costs, such as staffing, insurance and rent. Dr Hamilton says many of her innercity private colleagues are struggling for

hen Bridget Crowe had her babies, she was among an increasing number of Australian parents turning to the public hospital system. The Melbourne mother-of-three couldn’t justify the high out-of-pocket hospital fees. Specialists say she’s not alone in shunning the private system due to cost. National Association of Specialist Obstetricians and Gynaecologists president Gino Pecoraro says the nation is “witnessing the virtual collapse of private obstetrics”. Part of the problem is that Australia’s birth rate has fallen to a record low, while the majority of women giving birth elect to use the public system because of the cost of private health cover, the Brisbane-based specialist says. “People who are having babies are all being forced to go to the public sector, which was never designed or intended to do all of the work,” he says. “[Public hospitals] are really struggling.” In 2016/17, 23.7 per cent of childbirth procedures carried out in hospitals took place in private facilities but the share has steadily fallen to 21.8 per cent in 2020/21.

The remaining 31 per cent typically paid $350 in out-of-pocket fees, while 57 per cent of patients whose

babies were delivered by Caesarean section faced out-of-pocket doctors’ costs typically worth $420. However, the figures don’t include hospital charges such as accommodation or theatre costs, which usually reached into the thousands of dollars and might not be fully covered by insurers. Ms Crowe and husband Matty initially planned to go private but changed their minds because of the out-of-pocket costs. “We originally increased my private [insurance] coverage to include pregnancy when we were thinking of trying for our first [child],” she says. “Then I was told the out-of-pocket cost for the majority of doctors in my area started around $5000. This cost alongside the increase in our premium was significant for us. So we decided to go with the public system.” Rachel David, the CEO of private health insurance industry body Private Health Care Australia, says out-of-pocket costs often turn people off private maternity care but adds the system is difficult to navigate due to the Medicare Benefits Scheme. Private health insurers are often not allowed to co-fund outpatient care if a Medicare benefit is payable, she says, adding the system as a whole is “too rigid”. “What we don’t want to happen is for private obstetrics to disappear, the workforce to disappear and then have a very big load on the public hospital system and create some bottlenecks, which actually impact patient care,” she says. A spokesperson for the Department of Health says cover for pregnancy and birth is mandatory in top-tier health insurance plans, but it is a decision for insurers if they include similar cover in cheaper policies. “The benefits paid for pregnancy and birth are generally of a significant amount, which require higher levels of premiums to cover,” she says. – AAP

No safe place to

sleep As St Vincent de Paul calls on local leaders to join the CEO Sleepout, the wider community is being reminded of the staggering number of people who face homelessness in our region every day. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

n a cold winter’s night everyone deserves to be rugged up in a safe, comfortable bed. But sadly, this is something most of us take for granted, and many people across the Sunshine Coast face sleeping rough each night. As the housing crisis worsens and more people are being forced out of temporary or rental accommodation, the idea of homelessness is becoming a more common and frightening reality. The main causes of homelessness are poverty, domestic violence, unaffordable rents and the rising cost of living, and the definition of homelessness encompasses many situations from an inadequate dwelling to no dwelling and even couch surfing. While it is difficult to determine exactly how many people the crisis affects – as we await recent Census results – 2016 data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicates more than 116,000 Australians were homeless. Of that number, it is estimated around 894 people on the Sunshine Coast experience homelessness on any given night, with this expected to be significantly more in 2022. This is because more residents across the board – even those with secure employment such as nurses and emergency workers – are finding they have nowhere to live.

To shed a light on the issue, each year the Vinnies CEO Sleepout calls on participants to spend a night sleeping rough, on one of the coldest nights of the year, to raise vital funds and awareness for homelessness support. The Sleepout has been running since 2006 and in 2021 Vinnies helped Queenslanders by providing housing and crisis accommodation for more than 101,000 nights and supplying $258 million in services and support to people in need. On June 23, Noosa Beach will play host the Sunshine Coast event and rain, hail or shine, local leaders will swap their warm bed for a piece of cardboard, as they brave the elements to sleep rough for the night. The region’s Sleepout aims to raise more than $200,000 and Sunshine Coast regional president for St Vincent de Paul, John Harrison, tells My Weekly Preview funds raised from the event will go directly towards local families in need. He says in some cases the money will also be used to keep residents already in leases in their rental property as more people than ever turn to the charity for support. “Everybody has the right to have a roof over their heads, however modest,” Mr Harrison says. “At the moment there is a chronic shortage of houses and we are seeing people who are newly homeless or have not been homeless before. “We do have a program that helps

subside eligible people temporarily with their rental payments, but generally speaking if they are not in a lease, we have to provide them with swags and food. They are only the small things we can do. “The only other alternative is making them feel as comfortable as they can be in a car. “It’s daunting for everybody involved, even for us emotionally seeing people in these situations.”

Mr Harrison says since the onset of COVID it is difficult to gauge just how many people sleep rough in the region. “I don’t think anyone has a real handle on it at the moment because there has been a lot of movement. More and more people are couch surfing or living with relatives for periods of time, moving around here and there. “All the rains that we have had recently too – it must have been appalling to be sleeping out.” The Queensland government is the lead agency responsible for reducing homelessness in the state and provides public housing and funding to housing and homelessness services. It also has a Housing and Homelessness Action Plan 2021-2025, which aims to address housing supply and affordability, to drive a pipeline of social and affordable housing for low- to moderate-income Queenslanders and close the gap in housing for First Nations peoples. Sunshine Coast Council can make referrals to the state government regarding homelessness in the community, and in February 2021 it held a homelessness roundtable discussion to look at solutions on a local level. Then in early May, a Sunshine Coast Housing and Homelessness Network (SCHHN) workshop – the first since the pandemic – was held to form an action plan for the housing crisis. myweeklypreview.com.au

The 40 attendees who are part of SCHHN represent all major housing and community services, three levels of government, community groups and the private sector. The workshop highlights one of the quickest solutions is changing local and state laws that currently restrict granny flats and tiny houses. On a national level, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made an election promise that he will establish a National Housing Supply and Affordability Council, to ensure the Commonwealth plays a leadership role in increasing housing supply and improving housing affordability. But Mr Harrison says more needs to be done to ensure effective change around the “distressing” situation. “It’s such a problem and it’s only getting worse. The only way that we are going to make a change and a difference here is by changing public opinion.” He says the CEO Sleepout goes a long way to make that first step as it aims to make people aware that this is a situation that is worsening. “It’s a one-night experience of how it might feel to be homeless,” he says.

LOCAL SOLUTIONS Across the region, many community organisations, charities and government bodies are constantly working on solutions or temporary relief for locals who find themselves facing homelessness. This can be in the form of accommodation, food, medical or legal services, or even a place to have a shower and charge a phone. In 2021, Sunshine Coast Council published the Sunshine Coast Housing and Homelessness Directory, listing the range of services available in the region. On June 23 a team of prominent business people from across the region will participate in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout. As one of the highest fundraising groups in Queensland, Team Sunshine Coast has about 50 people registered to sleep out, so far raising more than $50,000 for the cause. This money alone will help provide 153 individual support programs, 402 beds and 1610 meals. As a volunteer ambassador for the event, Jeanette Allom-Hill is hoping to continue the fundraising momentum in the lead-up to the Sleepout. Ms Allom-Hill knows first-hand what it feels like to face homelessness and is someone who strives to champion gender diversity goals. “I often read the cries for help on the community pages and the heartbreaking stories of families on the Sunny Coast not being able to find shelter,” she says. “Homelessness touches me personally as when we had to leave South Africa when I was only seven, we had to flee our home and stay in a church and when we arrived in Australia we had to stay with friends, and I remember the feeling of a lack of security and home very clearly. “That’s why I volunteered as the ambassador for the Sunshine Coast team as it gives us all an opportunity to make a difference and to heal the pain we have felt personally or through a connection.” Helping grow the Team Sunshine Coast numbers, Ms Allom-Hill says the community support behind this campaign has the power to make that difference. “I love this community and strongly believe that to live a meaningful life one must give back to your community,” she says. “Our collective power is everything and without their support we wouldn’t be able to repair tears in our community. “I want to acknowledge and thank

Foodies are invited to The Curated (side) Plate festival, where Sunshine Coast restaurants, farms, tourism and event operators will open their doors as part of the 10-day event. From regional favourites such as Harry’s on Buderim and Spicers Tamarind, to great local producers including Montville Coffee and Sunshine Coast Cider, The Curated (side) Plate has it all! This year, more than 85 events will showcase produce and event services of more than 170 Sunshine Coast businesses from July 29 to August 7, with more businesses expected to join the broad menu of events over the coming weeks. Sunshine Coast Council economy portfolio councillor Jason O’Pray says the region has 400 food tourism operators and a food agribusiness industry currently valued at more than $700 million. “The Sunshine Coast is taking the opportunity to capitalise on the fastgrowing food tourism sector,” Cr O’Pray says. “There are plenty of locations,

activities, menus and price points to suit everyone, and many hidden gems to surprise visitors and locals. BE THERE FOR BLOOMHILL IS BACK After a long career helping others, Mons resident Noel O’Mara found himself on the receiving end of care from the team at Bloomhill Cancer Care.

man who spent 27 years as a first responder attending everything from serious crashes to roadside births never expected his life would need saving. But in 2019 that is exactly what happened when Noel O’Mara was suddenly diagnosed with gastrooesophageal cancer. So began a painful journey of surgery, chemotherapy and radium therapy. It was lifesaving but a complete “assault” on his body. With his oncologist advising that the cancer was curable, the Mons resident named his tumour ‘Hitler’ and his treatment his ‘allied forces’, but this did not make it any less frightening. “My specialist, knowing I had the stomach for that kind of talk being an ambo, actually said: ‘Mate, you know what we have to do for open heart surgery? That’s a walk in the park compared to what’s going to happen to you.’ “I said goodbye to my family and went into theatre and didn’t see them for 11 hours – what a marathon for [my specialist] and the surgical team. “I’ve got the scars to show for it, but

I’m alive to tell the tale, and for that I’m truly thankful.” As a proud cancer survivor, Mr O’Mara is now a Lived Experience Ambassador with Bloomhill Cancer Care and helping launch its annual fundraiser Be There for Bloomhill this June. The Buderim-based cancer charity provided services to Mr O’Mara, offering meditation as well as treatments to reduce his surgery scars.

“I met a remarkable nurse, who explained so many things to me, like how cancer can get in your head, what you can do about that, and about the scars and how to alleviate discomforts and address pain,” he says. “I hadn’t been game to let anyone touch my scars but [Bloomhill’s massage therapists] have each been able to do wonderful relaxing ‘soft touch’ massage and cold laser treatment for me that has

been so beneficial. The laser treatment has helped reduce the scars significantly.” As part of the campaign, Bloomhill is hoping to encourage people to visit its op shops – one of its main points of fundraising – which has had a significant drop in income over recent years. Bloomhill CEO Christopher John says sales from its op shop will help fund a vital redevelopment for the charity. “We are preparing to redevelop our wellness centre from five to 14 therapy rooms so we can help more people, but the post-COVID building crisis is creating significant challenges,” he says. “The op shops, which supply about 75 per cent of the charity’s income – in a normal, non-COVID year – have this year had sales dip so low Bloomhill was until recently eating into its savings to keep afloat. “This year Bloomhill celebrates 25 years of providing individualised support, and we want to continue this for the next 25 years. ON WITH THE SHOW The region’s agricultural show is going ahead this weekend, and promises to offer a fantastic mix of tradition, new entertainment and family fun.

The 116th Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show is set to go ahead from June 10 to 12 and will bring with it all of your show-time favourites and more. With an air of uncertainly lingering over the historic event at the beginning of the year, thanks to COVID vaccine mandates, organisers are pleased the show is able to go ahead in 2022. Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show manager Penny Walsh says the annual show will showcase a fantastic mix of tradition and new age entertainment for show-goers at great value for money. “For more than a century the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show has provided local people with opportunities to showcase their skills, their produce, their products and also to entertain our community in so many ways,” Ms Walsh says. “That great tradition will continue this year along with some very exciting additions including the Rooftop

With limited parking available on site, show-goers are being encouraged to make use of paid public car parking at the MacKellar Mining depot on National Park Road and at Nambour Crushers Rugby League Club. A free shuttle bus service will also run from the Nambour train station to the main gate throughout the day until after the fireworks in the evening. he Sunshine Coast community is just days away from finding out if UNESCO will officially recognise our region as a biosphere – an international site of excellence and an area of natural beauty. Becoming a biosphere means the Sunshine Coast would be recognised as a special place where responsible development, active conservation and people working, living and playing all exist together in a sustainable way. A biosphere designation would also help protect and enhance our communities, economy and natural assets. In addition, it could help Council and the community create a legacy for our children’s future; care for our beautiful landscapes and stunning beaches; protect, share and celebrate the cultural

heritage of our communities; and leverage international recognition and economic opportunities to grow local businesses. The international recognition would also provide many benefits to the Sunshine Coast’s businesses and industries, especially those in tourism and agriculture, as our region has the potential to become a magnet for others from around the world who want to buy from and visit a locality that focuses on sustainability. With so many markets wanting a clean, green product, a biosphere designation would open opportunities for local food and agribusiness sectors by allowing them to brand their products and showcase the Sunshine Coast Biosphere. If the region’s nomination is successful,

residents, visitors and businesses can continue to enjoy the outdoors as they do now, and with the added confidence of a brighter future through a shared goal of sustainability. Committing to being a biosphere showcases that Council and the broader community continue to respect the environment and understand our place living within it. After Council and the community worked together to develop the UNESCO Biosphere nomination in 2019, the nomination has now made it to the final leg of the process and, if successful, should be a celebration for one and all.

PLC RALLIES FOR THE SALVOS

A student-led initiative at Pacific Lutheran College is helping The Salvation Army continue its good work in the region. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa. WHAT IS THE RED SHIELD APPEAL? Beginning in 1965, The Red Shield Appeal is The Salvation Army’s signature fundraising drive that helps fund the charity’s vast network of social and community services. The funds raised from this campaign offer holistic support to people facing homelessness, family and domestic violence, addiction, financial hardship, disaster and emergency situations. On average, The Salvation Army helps a person through this network of services and programs in Australia every 17 seconds. The appeal runs during April, May and June and includes the popular door-knock appeal.

ach May, Pacific Lutheran College (PLC) in Meridan Plains supports the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal, and 2022 will be no different with students from Prep to Year 12 supporting the cause. Aiming to better the collection each year, students use the service-earning opportunity to donate non-perishable food items and household goods. This year the PLC community has been busy collecting 3782 items, which is more than double last year, and raising $2200 dollars for the Red Shield Appeal, which has been handed to the Caloundra Salvation Army branch. PLC principal Bronwyn Dolling says this is the school’s 19th year supporting the Red Shield Appeal. “Many people rely heavily on the work that the Salvation Army do to help

provide them with basic essentials that we often take for granted,” she says. “There can be a range of circumstances that impact on local families. “As a community we can help make a difference to the lives of people in the local community. Through simple actions we can provide hope.” College chaplain Mark Hauser says the students put in a phenomenal effort throughout the fundraising campaign. “It’s a heart-warming experience watching the college community unite to support those in our wider community,” he says. “This year, like previous years, the fundraising is predominantly studentdriven, which greatly benefits their growth and development.” The Salvation Army will use the donations to distribute to people in need in the Caloundra area.

STOCKS ARE FALLING SO IT’S TIME TO GIVE BLOOD Sunshine Coast residents are being urged to consider donating blood over winter as supplies drop due to the cold and flu season. This week, Australian Red Cross Lifeblood predicts the region will need 500 extra donations to cope with the shortage. Spokesperson Belinda Smetioukh says stocks of A, O and B blood groups are particularly under pressure due to cancellations and no shows. She says the major issue is people unable to donate if they fall ill with a cold, the flu or COVID COVID.. “We are pleading with anyone who is well and healthy to book a donation today and encourage your friends and family to do the same,” Ms Smetioukh says. “There are patients in hospital right now who are relying on blood for cancer treatment, surgery, accidents and complicated births. If you don’t know your blood type, donating is a great way to find out. Every blood donation can help to save up to three lives.” Residents can book a donation on lifeblood.com.au, on the Donate Blood app or by calling 13 14 95.

MOFFAT BEACH BREWING CO CLAIM BIG WINS AT BEER AWARDS The Sunshine Coast’s top brewers are frothing about their latest accolades on the world stage of beer making. The best beers in the world have been tasted and judged at the prestigious 2022 Australian International Beer Awards, and the region’s very own Moffat Beach Brewing Co is still in celebratory mode after taking home some of the night’s biggest trophies. The small but rapidly growing operation claimed the title for two of the most hotly contested categories: Best International Pale Ale with the Shadow of The Moon Strong

Pale Ale, as well as Best Traditional India Pale Ale with the hugely popular Trilogy Best Coast IPA. The team, led by co-founders Matt and Sharynne Wilson, also earned an impressive nine gold medals, one silver medal and three bronze medals. Gold medals were awarded to beers including Moff’s Summer Ale, Passenger Pale Ale, Reset Red IPA, and Social Jam Pale Mid. Rounding out the night’s success, Moffat Beach Brewing Co was named Champion Small Australian Brewery.

GRAMMAR COMMITS TO RECONCILIATION WITH NEW GARDEN Sunshine Coast Grammar School held its annual National Sorry Day assembly last month to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations survivors and reflect on its Reconciliation Action Plan. The school has also named students Lucas Brodrick (Year 10) and Amalia Noble (Year 11) as First Nation Ambassadors and inaugural Indigenous Scholarship recipients to reflect their commitment in promoting reconciliation across all areas of the school and the wider community. To commemorate National Sorry Day on May 26, Lucas and Amalia unveiled a Reconciliation Garden known as the Wunya Garden.

The garden includes a native hibiscus tree, which is approved by the National Stolen Generations Alliance as the official symbol for Sorry Day. “The purpose of the Wunya Garden is to create a visual sign of Grammar’s commitment to working towards a bright future in restoring and respecting culture and love of country,” the school’s Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group co-ordinator Kelly Brodrick, says. “Each year, the school will commemorate the significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander events by planting a native tree in the Wunya Garden.”

SUNSEEKER TO AUCTION CARAVAN FOR CHARITY A Warana-based caravan company will auction off a top-of-the-line caravan to raise money for The Daniel Morcombe Foundation. Sunseeker Caravans is hoping to hand over more than $50,000 to the foundation from the sale of its 23-foot Desert Storm model at the upcoming Let’s Go Queensland Caravan and Camping Supershow. There is a 12-month wait on caravans, so Sunseeker owner Chris Michel says this is a wonderful opportunity to purchase a caravan immediately and help a local

charity in the process. “We are a family business; I have four kids myself and most of my staff also have children,” he says. “Bruce, Denise and the whole team at the foundation play a key role in the community and the work they do to keep children safe and educated across the county is inspirational. Queensland has made the public display of hate symbols a crime, and it has Jane Stephens pondering the meaning of symbols in our society.

A visit to see a friend in hospital has Ashley Robinson reminiscing about another old mate – the legendary Tom Durbidge.

ymbols have the power to inspire hate, but also love. Our surroundings are smattered with symbols and humans are experts at understanding meanings without words. A few thousand years of practise have honed our symbol-reading skills and given depth to our perceptions of their meaning. In trademarked shapes such as the Nike swoosh, religious symbols like a crucifix or road signs, symbols give meaning to objects beyond spoken words. Australian Museum Research Institute evolutionary biologist Darren Curnoe says while other animals can learn to recognise and use symbols, creating them is human alone. Symbols provide context, give us information and are used to sell us things. They can also be a quiet call to the dark and the damaged. Recently, our premier announced that symbols of hate would be banned in Queensland. She said she was motivated to act after a person last October hung a Nazi flag from their Brisbane apartment window, which faced a Jewish synagogue. The Jewish community was naturally horrified and called on state parliament, which was

reviewing hate crime legislation at the time, to ban the swastika from public display. Our legislators acted, deeming our existing laws were not strong enough to deter ill-doers who used shapes and signs to spread their poison. At the time of doing it, the Brisbane flag flyer was charged with public nuisance but if they were to dangle such an item under the new law, they would face more serious criminal charges. The bill introduced to parliament criminalises the intentional display of symbols to promote hatred or cause fear. That might be on a T-shirt, a bumper sticker, a placard or in an advertisement. While we’re considering symbols of hate and fear, let’s not forget to notice those symbols that propagate good vibes too. Our world is full of them: a thumbs-up character, a green light, a smile, an X at the end of a message. Symbols that have made my heart swell these past days have included flowers from a grateful graduating student, birthday cupcakes for me, hand-decorated by a precious little boy; and a heart-shaped ideograph that my beloved left where I would see it, knowing it was from him. Signs of gratitude and love, all.

have a good mate who recently nearly lost his leg in an accident and is now on the road to recovery. I spoke to him just after he was released from hospital and we were talking about recovery time and I told him he needed to get on the Bundaberg Rum. There was a pause on the other end of the phone in a ‘please explain’ moment. I then blurted out that sailors drank rum because it stopped scurvy on long voyages. I then realised that I was repeating something from about 30 years ago. One of my idols when I worked at Mooloolaba Hotel was legendary mullet fisherman Tom Durbidge. He got his leg caught in a winch and I remember visiting him in hospital thinking he would struggle to recover from horrific injuries at his age. About a week later he walked into the pub for his usual rum and beer chaser at lunchtime and explained to me the healing powers of Bundy. I learnt a lot from Tom. Like the weather – he always said storms that come from the south or north always get broken up by the range and most times the western side of the range gets the worst

of it, but if it comes from the ocean basically kiss your bum goodbye. He would have a big breakfast after a predawn start for work, a couple of beers and rums before lunch, then a big lunch, a sleep, some more beers at the pub and a sandwich for dinner, early to bed and then do it all again the next day. It certainly worked for him as he was always healthy and active. I never saw Tom with shoes on until he won a trip to the Melbourne Cup one year and tried to give it away. I thought he was worried about flying or a big city thing but it was about having to wear shoes. We eventually talked him into it and he and his lovely wife had an awesome time. On his birthday I used to let him serve himself, so basically I would pour the beers and he would have his own bottle of rum to share with his old mate Stan Wilcox. The only change I would notice would be the faces would be a touch redder, but their good manners never ever changed. It’s been over 20 years since he left this earth but he certainly made a massive impact. Thanks Tom, there should be more humans like you.

His journey first started as a STEPS Pathways College student where he began his first steps towards a life without limits. The Work Mates program provides long-term and personalised employment coaching to anyone with an NDIS plan.

The program helps participants discover their passion and employment goals as well as developing the right skills for their ideal work path. Mr Solti and his STEPS trainer Danni door knocked in the local community looking for a business that would take him on for work experience. They struck it lucky with Ben Summerhayes, a young working

professional and the owner of Mr Benesse cafe on Bulcock Street, Caloundra. Mr Summerhayes instantly showed an interest in the STEPS initiative and the opportunities it provides to students. He immediately developed a great connection with Mr Solti and offered him a job opportunity to work at the cafe. “I really enjoy working with Ben,”

Mr Solti says. “He is a good role model and pretty cool to be around.” Since starting work at the Mr Benesse cafe three months ago, Mr Solti has developed great skills around taking ownership and initiative in the workplace. Taking pride in his work and his love of assisting customers has helped him develop some valuable connections, with customers often asking if he is working when they come in for a coffee. Mr Solti’s mother has expressed her gratitude about his involvement in the Work Mates program. “He has displayed a huge boost in maturity since working at the cafe, which is amazing,” she says. This is further proof of how the program offers great opportunities and has a positive effect on individuals and the local community. Business owners are encouraged to get involved in the program to help broaden the horizons of young people with a disability. The program offers two extra sets of hands, a student and their trainer at no cost to the business. Mr Solti is still working at the cafe and has a bright future ahead with goals to work in a profession he enjoys and plans to live a more independent life. Without big-hearted businesses like these, STEPS would not be able to provide these opportunities, so locals are encouraged to pop in for a coffee and support the Mr Benesse cafe on Bulcock Street, Caloundra.

Children are particularly perceptive to their sensory world, so it stands to reason that eating is much more difficult for many. Parents cannot make their children eat. So their job is giving their children the best opportunities to become familiar with foods, and help them regulate their sensory world while accessing as many essential nutrients as possible. Remember that actually swallowing the food is the last of a series of steps. Each step they reach along the way is an achievement.

SUNSHINE COAST PROPERTY MARKET PROVES RESILIENT TO CHANGING CONDITIONS Thanks to lifestyle, affordability and proximity to a capital city and airports, the Sunshine Coast retains its value and more. WORDS: Gail Forrer.

he resilient property market in Queensland, particularly on the Sunshine Coast, appears to be defying the downturn being seen in southern states, with median house prices still climbing 3.23 per cent and median unit prices rising 2.17 per cent in the first quarter of 2022, the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) reports this month. Ross Cattle of Define Property says last weekend’s sales are evidence of a buoyant market. “We did more than $9 million in sales,” he says. Those sales included a range of properties including units, homes and auctions sales made under the hammer and prior to the auction. Mr Cattle says these figures prove that the market is still strong, despite forecasts of a slowing market. The figures back up REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella’s March prediction the Queensland’s property market would perform positively yet again after the March 2022 quarter (January to March

2022), and the stage was still set for continued growth. “Over the past two years, the story of Queensland’s property market has been an extraordinarily positive one from a seller’s perspective, and the latest quarterly data tells us the sunshine state market is still a rising star,” Ms Mercorella says. “The first quarter of 2022 has been fraught with disruptions such as COVID-19 outbreaks, the flooding disaster, the string of long weekends including the standstill of Easter, the looming federal election, and signs pointing to an interest

rate rise, with some banks adjusting early in anticipation. “Despite all of these disruptive events which may have caused some buyers to hit pause on their search, the market has continued to deliver healthy growth, and I’m sure the median prices reached this quarter will take some of us by surprise.” REIQ sales figures show that after Brisbane, the LGAs (local government areas) that had the highest volume of house sales over the quarter were the Gold Coast (2084), Moreton Bay (1696), Logan (1340) and the Sunshine Coast (1216) –

areas offering lifestyle, affordability and proximity to the capital city and airports. In terms of unit sales, after Brisbane, the LGAs with the most units sold this quarter were the Gold Coast (1983), Sunshine Coast (547), Moreton Bay (493) and Cairns (425). The Sunshine Coast unit market grew 7.21 per cent, bringing the median price to $646,000. Unit days on market were down to 22 days across Queensland in the last 12 months (dropping 10 days from 32 days), and particularly on the Sunshine Coast (16 days). However, Ms Mercorella adds that despite record prices, it is still possible to find affordable property: “Of course, it can be easy to be disillusioned and discouraged as a buyer watching these prices reach new heights, but it’s important to remember these are median sales figures over a relatively short period of time and there are always more affordable options in areas with a milliondollar median, so it’s worth doing your research before assuming an area or suburb is out of your reach.”

He declared it wasn’t a bad turnout, considering the news swirling around of a slowing market. The units sold included 1/355 Bradman Avenue, Maroochydore, sold under the hammer for $500,000; 3/60 Edward Street, Alexandra Headland, sold under the hammer for $690,000; and 6 Driver Street, Palmview, which sold under the hammer for $650,000. The Palmview residence went to first homebuyers.

CLOSING IN FOR THE SALE McGrath Estate Agents Caloundra agent Bree Charles says there’s plenty of interest in a four-bedroom, three-bath, three-car Buddina home passed in at auction and now listed for offers over $3.5 million. The property’s position at 32 Adaluma Avenue is renowned as the epitome of waterfront addresses on the Sunshine Coast. The property boasts 18.1-metre deepwater frontage, complete with a 7.5-metre pontoon and jetty (powered and lightfilled), fish filleting station, plus secure boathouse. The agent says the vendors bought there in 2008 and are now ready to downsize. Approximately 70 people attended the auction with 33 groups registered and signed up on the day. As for what will happen next for this property? “Watch this space,” advises Ms Charles.

FIRST HOMEBUYERS IN THE AREA Local first homebuyers took the opportunity to purchase a Sippy Downs home for $810,000. The agent, Dallas Foster of Ray White, says bids for the three-bedroom home at 32 Dorian Crescent started at $700,000, swerved upwards to $790,00 and finally went to the winning bidder.

Last Sunday I took my dog Dusty out on my SUP as it was a stunning day. Sadly there was not much surf but there was quite a crowd. On our way back from the shark nets I thought I’d paddle wide but still near the waves so she could feel the swell movement. Suddenly, a wide swell came and I thought, this won’t break so I took a few strokes. Imagine my surprise that Dusty girl and I caught the wave of the day right through, making two sections and me hooting like a train coming down the track, much to the dismay of the serious mal riders – upset that a dog scored that wave. Oh I laughed!
