From the editor It made me feel a little old this week when I excitedly mentioned to my 18-year-old son Connor that I was interviewing one of the band members from Human Nature and he looked at me quizzically. Then I began singing one of their well-known hits. Still nothing, apart from him telling me to please stop singing!

Seriously though, it only seems like yesterday we were bopping along to the hit tunes by the iconic foursome, but in reality it was the late ’90s when the famous Aussie boy band hit our charts with hits like Telling Everybody and Every Time you Cry. They then went on to enjoy huge success in Las Vegas where they performed to sold-out shows for 11 years.

Remarkably, the wholesome quartet have stood the test of time, recently celebrating 30 years in the music industry,

no mean feat in such a fickle and changing industry, especially with the arrival of iTunes and social media changing the landscape dramatically.

Like all performing artists, the band has endured an uncertain couple of years due to the pandemic, but they are back on the road with their new show and will hit The Events Centre, Caloundra in June.

I caught up with band member Phil Burton to discover a little bit more about their success and what we can expect in their upcoming show.

Speaking of live events, it is wonderful to see the Sunshine Coast’s social scene come alive again. From fundraising events to live performance and fine arts, we have a plethora to choose from in our wonderful region.

I was fortunate enough to attend a couple of fabulous events last weekend.

The 10th Travis Schultz Winemakers Master Class held at the Maroochy RSL was a sold-out event and raised a staggering $245,000 for SunnyKids. Hundreds of guests enjoyed a delicious four-course degustation menu paired with excellent wines while being entertained by some of Australia’s best winemakers.

The Australian Wearable Art Festival was also in full swing last Saturday and I

Care costs rise as GPs ditch

bulk billing After seeing their costs rise and incomes decrease, and with the demands of the pandemic further straining the sector, GPs are abandoning bulk billing and demanding reform of the health system.

Ps have been sounding the alarm over rising costs of providing care – compounded by the pandemic and more complex demands.

Many have said they are abandoning bulk billing, the Medicare scheme that pays doctors a flat rate for consultations.

GPs earn considerably less than other medical specialists. If GPs maintain high rates of bulk billing and the Medicare repayment rate doesn’t cover their costs, practices become unsustainable.

Health-care quality can also decline, as GPs try to see more patients in a day to clock more bulk-billing fees. But opting out of bulk billing, as our specialists have done, could mean some patients lose access to care.

Meanwhile, more than 13 per cent of voters who responded to a poll by The Conversation were worried about health.

Cost-of-living pressures were also on their list of concerns before the election.

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has long supported GPs moving away from bulk billing so they don’t have to depend on the government to set their

incomes. Many GPs are heeding the call, and leaving patients with a larger gap fee to pay. Here’s why.

General medical practices are essentially small, private businesses, which are free to set their own fees and working conditions. Medicare is a government insurance scheme to help patients access private GPs. Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fees are raised each year in accordance with the government’s Wage Price Index. This approach has long been criticised for failing to keep pace with inflation in the health sector.

Compounding this lag, rebates were frozen in 2013 as a cost-cutting measure for attendance items until July 2018.

Total federal government spending on health in 2021-22 was estimated to be $98.3 billion. Around 6.5 per cent of total health expenditure is allocated to delivering GP services.

The gap between the AMArecommended fee (around $86) and the Medicare rebate for a standard GP consult ($39.10) has grown by $13.50 over a decade to around $47. Average patient out-ofpocket costs for services directly provided

by GPs have increased by 50 per cent over the last decade.

Some 88.4 per cent of GP services were bulk billed in the final quarter of 2021, an increase of 0.3 per cent on the previous year, according to the Department of Health. But much of this increase can be explained by mandated bulk-billed telehealth consultations due to COVID. So, health-care costs in Australia are rising faster than cost of living pressures and wages growth. And there is ample evidence out-of-pocket costs create barriers to people getting health care, especially for many who need it most: rural populations, young families, and those with disabilities and chronic conditions.

Earlier this year, a large survey found 30 per cent of people with chronic conditions were not confident they could afford health care if they became seriously ill; 14 per cent of people with chronic conditions said they could not afford healthcare or medicine now.

General practices have worked hard to adapt to funding squeezes by creating efficiencies of scale (boosting practice size); adopting new technology, and seeing

more patients with shorter consultation times. But around half are concerned about their long-term viability.

Anecdotally, younger GPs say they are thinking about leaving face-to-face general practice, finding the demands and expectations unsustainable. Even sadder is their perception that the specialty has been devalued and de-skilled.

Due to the lower income and status of general practice, medical students have a limited interest in pursuing it as a career and registrar training places go unfilled.

So, the GP workforce gets older. Around 80 per cent of GPs think better pay would attract more graduates to the specialty.

The pandemic has compounded the strain on our health workforce, with GP clinics shouldering significant responsibility for testing, vaccinating and caring for COVID patients. Staff and supply shortages and inadequate funding models have put substantial stress onto an already busy and demanding career.

It’s understandable that many GPs are opting out of bulk billing. But there are no simple solutions for delivering high-quality health care to everyone.

Adopting new funding models, including more blended payments – moving away from fee-for-service and incorporating “pay for performance” funding – could ease the strains on general practices.

Our health system is due for some courageous reforms. GPs have long advocated for better telehealth, reducing the current funding bias towards procedural medicine, and more consultation tiers, to improve quality of care. A strong Medicare system is important to provide a safety net, ensuring equitable access for all Australians.

Did you know?

It’s well known that Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth while watching a theatre performance in Washington, DC in 1865. But you might not be aware that the US president had a bodyguard named John Frederick Parker with him on that fateful night. A NATURAL TALENT Despite the sell-out shows, commercial success, accolades and international recognition, for the four members of Human Nature, it’s the love of music and deep bonds of friendship that keep them taking to the stage night after night. WORDS: Ingrid Nelson.

T

hey were four young Sydney school mates with a love of making music who have gone on to enjoy a stellar 30-year career in the music industry.

From super-stardom status in their home country to sell-out shows during an 11-year stint in Vegas to being awarded an OAM and inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, boy band Human Nature have transcended the decades to remain one of Australia’s biggest success stories.

Like so many Aussie artists, the foursome (Phil Burton, Toby Allen and brothers Michael and Andrew Tierney) have had to alter their touring plans in the past couple of years due to the pandemic.

They are delighted to finally be back doing what they love best during their tour of Australia, including performing on the Sunshine Coast at The Events Centre, Caloundra on June 16 and 17.

“It’s been a crazy couple of years,” says Phil. “Some of the dates we are doing on this tour have been rescheduled for the third time, so it’s great to know we have all these consistent dates until the end of August.

“If COVID has taught us one thing, it’s how to be flexible and patient! We have always said we would complete our tour commitments and even though it’s taken a little longer than anticipated, we are certain we will get to each and every city and town scheduled on this tour and even hopefully add more dates.

“We’ve done about a dozen shows already and they are going really well, so things are looking good.”

known as the 4 Trax that they would one day become a household name. In fact, stardom was never even on their radar; it was a passion for music and mateship that catapulted them to success.

“We have always had a passion for what we do; it was never a case of just going through the motions,” Phil says. “When we started at high school there was no audition process, there was no thoughts of this being a business or super stardom. We literally got together as mates for fun to sing a few songs together and make a fun sound.

“That initial bond of friendship has always been there and [it is] the reason we started, and it’s still there to this day.”

Bursting onto the Australian charts in 1996, the quartet have ridden the wave to the top of the charts, initially at home and subsequently winning fans all over the globe. Their debut album Telling Everybody quickly became of the Australia’s highest selling debut albums ever, reaching four times platinum status and selling more than 300,000 copies. Nature have released 13 studio albums, four of which went to number one in Australia, garnering 27 platinum awards, 19 top 40 singles and five top 10 hits worldwide, with album sales in excess of 2.5 million in Australia alone.

According to Phil, it was a case of the band members’ voices blending naturally from the very beginning to create their distinctive sound that has seen them enjoy such success over the years.

“A lot of people get together and they don’t gel or manage to lock into the right sound; we have been blessed for that to happen,” he says.

“We have also been lucky with the timing of what we have done. It’s a mix of luck and how you take advantage of that luck. I’m pretty proud of the way we have taken advantage of the good things over the years.”

Some of their achievements include being awarded one of the top honours from their home country, when they were presented with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in January 2016 in recognition of their service to the performing arts and entertainment field.

“It was a really lovely shock,” Phil says.

“It made us look back and realise we had done a lot of charitable work over the years.

You don’t do it for the rewards but when the reward comes along you are grateful and it feels good.”

And it didn’t stop there. In November 2019 the band was inducted into the prestigious ARIA Hall of Fame at the ARIA Awards in Sydney, which was broadcast to an audience of billions.

“It was amazing knowing we had worked so hard in the Australian entertainment industry for 25 years and it was being recognised,” Phil says. “Standing up there performing a medley of our biggest hits and looking down and seeing our industry peers bopping along with it and giving us a standing ovation at the end will stick with us for a long time.”

A major turning point in Human Nature’s career began in 2005, when they released an album called Reach Out: The

Human Nature playing to packed houses at Las Vegas’ Imperial Palace Motown Record. A collection of Motown classics like My Girl, Baby I Need Your Loving and I’ll Be There, the album topped the charts and sold more than 420,000 copies in Australia.

It was the first of a Motown trilogy, and in the final album, Get Ready, in 2007, they joined forces with some of the absolute stars of Motown including Mary Wilson of The Supremes, Martha Reeves, The Temptations, and the great Smokey Robinson.

It was this association with Smokey Robinson that saw Human Nature heading over to America in early 2009 to start their Smokey Robinson presents Human Nature: The Motown Show residency in Las Vegas at the Imperial Palace, which they held for four years, performing five nights a week.

“Motown and the songs of the jukebox have always been big on our radar as far as songs to be inspired by,” Phil says. “For us it was the music we always loved listening to.”

But it wasn’t without its challenges to begin with.

“Four white Aussies singing Motown was an odd thing for American audiences at first, but because we had Smokey Robinson presenting our show, they gave it

a shot. The US crowds didn’t know who we were back then, so we were selling ourselves as well as the music. Americans are open to that. If they like it, they will let you know and if they don’t, they will also let you know.”

Fortunately, they loved it and the band went on to celebrate 10 years of performing more than 2000 shows in the coveted Las Vegas entertainment mecca.

“We would work five nights a week for 45 weeks a year, so we ended up doing 230 shows a year,” Phil says. “It was very intense but at the same time it really gave us an incredible match fitness; we could get up and sing any time anywhere. It taught us how to take care of ourselves to get through such a punishing schedule, which was pretty consistent for 11 years.”

The group has also toured with some of the music industry’s biggest names including Michael Jackson and Celine Dion, as well as performing to more than a billion television viewers worldwide during the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. They also had the privilege of performing on The Oprah Winfrey Show during her Australian TV special. During their 10 years based in the US, they have

made TV appearances on The Talk, Dancing With The Stars, The View, Wheel Of Fortune and The Today Show as well as hosted their own in-residency TV show on Fox 5 Vegas.

“Of all the famous stars we have worked with, Celine Dion was the most memorable.

She could not have been a nicer lady,” says Phil. “We were brought on as an integral part of the tour, we were treated so well and she was so humble and such a down-toearth lady. She would sit next to you at dinner. She taught us to have humility and respect for everybody in the industry, from crew to support acts; we have a lot to thank her for.”

Phil made headlines in 2021 when he and his wife made the big decision to move their young family back to Australia. A decision Phil still believes was the right one.

“When my wife and I went to LA we always knew we would come home eventually,” he says. “It was a great experience, but to us it was never our home. We are very much Aussies at heart.”

Currently on the road as part of their Australian tour, Phil says the boys are enjoying visiting some beautiful parts of Australia along the way.

“There is a lot of van travel at the moment. We are doing trips around regional areas of Australia, taking in some places we have never been before.

“Yesterday we went from Warragul to Shepperton in Victoria through the Yarra Valley, which was just gorgeous. A typical day on tour includes driving, doing the show, going to bed and then doing it all over again the next day.”

With no signs of slowing down any time soon, the 48-year-old says they are already planning their next tour.

“When the tour finishes in July, the other boys will head back to Vegas until the end of the year and will return to Australia in late 2022 or early 2023 when we will tour Australia again. It is very much still all systems go.”

$1.3 MILLION LOCAL SET TO FLEX FOR CHARITY A Sunshine Coast ultra-endurance athlete is preparing for a gruelling 24-hour fitness challenge to raise money for a cause close to his heart. On June 7, Jamie Milne will complete as many pull-ups as he can to raise money for Dementia Australia. Mr Milne says his inspiration is his grandmother, who was always there for him after he started heading down a dark path as a younger man. “I know I found it difficult with my grandmother and seeing what dementia was doing to her,” he says. “As a young man it was hard to see her that way, but that’s also something I haven’t forgotten.” Mr Milne is hoping to raise $25,000. The recent deluge and flooding across the Sunshine Coast is prompting renewed calls for the community to report a pothole or damaged roads. While crews have been out and about clearing debris and ensuring roads are safe, Sunshine Coast Council community portfolio councillor David Law says residents are the eyes and ears in locating damage. “Since the February weather event and the more recent heavy rain this month, some of our roads have been significantly impacted,” he says.

EPIC NEWS FOR USC STUDENTS The design giant behind Fortnite, one of the world’s most popular games, has chosen The University of the Sunshine Coast for a Queensland-first partnership. Epic Games is naming USC an Unreal Academic Partner, acknowledging the university’s integration of Epic’s industry-leading technology into its game design programs. Program co-ordinator for USC’s Bachelor of Design (Game Design) Dr Justin Carter says student numbers in USC’s Game Design programs are growing.

“Partnering with Epic is testament to what we teach, how we teach it, and the hard work of our students who are gaining critical skills to develop the next generation of games,” he says.

A Caloundra man is $1.3 million richer after winning last Saturday’s Gold Lotto draw. The Sunshine Coast resident held one of the four division one winning entries in draw 4261 on Saturday, May 21, and say he will use the money to pay off his house. Each division one winning entry nabbed $1,393,369.77. The elated winner purchased his 18-game QuickPick entry at TSG Caloundra. SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION Ami Bateman solved a problem and launched a business. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

T

he saying ‘If you want something done, do it yourself’ rings true for a Sunshine Coast sustainable business pioneer making meaningful changes in the cleaning industry.

After a busy life in Melbourne and Sydney working in large corporate businesses across HR, marketing, health and safety, sustainability and technology, Ami Bateman came to the Sunshine Coast for a slower life in 2019.

With her lifestyle change came a decision to eradicate plastics and toxins from her home to address long-term health issues she had been suffering.

And while you may not know that she likes to dance to the sound her Thermomix makes, you may have heard of Pleasant State – Ms Bateman’s solution to plastic-free cleaning.

“I was struggling to find plastic- and toxin-free solutions to my cleaning products,” Ms Bateman says. “I then came across just-add-water products that were becoming popular overseas.

“It seemed like a no-brainer as the solution reduced transport emissions and stopped plastic bottles being thrown away after one use.”

Pleasant State is growing from strength to strength and in 2021 Ms Bateman was named

the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network’s Sustainable Business Woman of the Year.

“It meant so much to be recognised for the work we had put in to make Pleasant State a truly sustainable and ethical business,” she says. “We’ve since also achieved B Corp Certification – Australia’s only cleaning brand to achieve such recognition for our high environmental, social and governance standards.”

She says having a network of people to lean on when running a business is very important, especially if things don’t go to plan.

“My experience so far is that the network is hugely supportive and it’s very important when running a business to have the right people around you that you can lean on for answers, because it’s impossible to know everything.”

Ms Bateman is now gearing up to release Pleasant State’s first just-add-water hand wash and dish wash.

eloved Sunshine Coast hinterland identity Peg Burnett’s legacy is being formally recognised with a new plaque installed in her memory at Maleny Library.

Mrs Burnett (1915-2007) is often remembered as a “true stalwart” of Maleny, working tirelessly for the benefit of her community.

She spent much of her life servicing and restoring the library, which originally opened in the annex of the Maleny School of Arts Hall in Maple Street in 1932.

Taking over from the first librarian Betty Blacklaw, Mrs Burnett managed the library until her marriage to Rixon Burnett in 1939. Mr Burnett was later elected to Landsborough Shire Council in 1955.

While Mrs Burnett was known for saying “married women didn’t work then”, Sunshine Coast Council division five councillor Winston Johnston says she remained an integral member of the community, volunteering and managing the library until 1978.

“In 1951, a fire gutted the building, and the hall was rebuilt on the same site and renamed the Maleny Community

Centre,” Mr Johnston says. “Peg raised money for the library by renting out books from a small collection saved from the fire and the funds raised allowed her to buy new books to rebuild the library catalogue.

“Our community is a strong and

In the 1990s, the Maleny Fruit Barn on Coral Street was bought by the Caloundra City Council and refurbished to become the new library. A car park was added in 1997 when the adjacent Maleny Meats was demolished.

The present-day library officially opened on May 1, 1998.

SOLSTICE SWIM IS ON AGAIN An annual winter swim to support youth across the Sunshine Coast is warming up for its 2022 event. The Winter Solstice Swim is happening on June 26, organised by the Alexandra Headland Rotary Club and Alex Surf Club.

Now it its fifth year, the friendly event offers one-, three- and five-kilometre courses where capable swimmers can test themselves all for a great cause. This year’s beneficiaries will be SalTy Souls Legacy, The Board Meeting and IFYS. The 2021 event raised $30,000 to help SalTy Souls Legacy establish a permanent headquarters in Maroochydore.

Registration for the event, which is taking place at Alex Beach, closes on June 1. The day will also include raffles and live entertainment, so spectators can support the event.

HOLISTIC LIVING A PATH TO HEALTH A serious health scare led this Sunshine Coast mother to walk a different path to wellness, which she how shares with others. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

dangerous infection and three-month hospital stint has prompted a Sunshine Coast mother to help residents who are on their own path to finding wellness.

With a background in communication for social change, Cat Green has worked in various community engagement roles around the world, including with Iraqi refugees in Syria and with disaster resilience after the 2011 Brisbane floods.

But it was while working with farmers in Indonesia 10 years ago and contracting two infectious tropical diseases that the course of her life changed – for the better.

Having to learn to walk again and re-tone the muscles in her body, Ms Green turned to a holistic toolbox of mind, body and soul strategies to regain control over her health.

“My story starts in a hospital in Indonesia. I ended up in hospital for three months before being medevaced back to Australia,” Ms Green says.

“I almost got the whole plane quarantined, before being whisked straight to hospital quarantine.

“After not walking much for three months, I had lost lots of weight and muscle tone.

“Over the last 10 years, I have worked with amazing practitioners who have helped me on the return to vibrancy and vitality.

“I am the first to know what is working, what feels off, and when I need to dip into my personal toolbox of

mind, body, soul strategies to regain balance,” she says.

“It is imperative that we know how our bodies work, what messages they’re sending us.”

This experience inspired Ms Green to create her own

business, Everyday Empowered, where she collaborates with a range of skilled practitioners and educators to run workshops and help people learn micro-skills for holistic living.

These micro-skills are designed to help people communicate with and understand their own body.

“It is how we learn to understand and care for our bodies in the small, humble, often hidden moments of daily life,” she says.

“It is preventative health. By seeing early warning signs you’ll have time to course correct while imbalances are still small.”

As part of her work, Ms Green is organising Sunny Coast HerbFest, happening on June 5.

The event will be a chance to celebrate local herbal practitioners and businesses and will feature speakers, a demonstration tent, market stalls, live music and a herbal-inspired kids’ corner.

“HerbFest is a celebration of the amazing herbal businesses and practitioners that work on the Coast,” Ms Green says.

“The quality, creativity and uniqueness of the handmade herbal products is amazing and it’s great to be able to stock up on locally made skincare, herbal remedies and first aid, bath salts and personal care products and herbal seedlings all at the same time.”

Council grants more than half a million dollars to local community groups Sunshine Coast community organisations will be able to deliver almost 100 important projects thanks to funding from Council’s Community Grants Program.

I

n a major boost for local not-for-profit community groups, Sunshine Coast Council has announced more than $550,000 will support 95 local projects in its latest Major Grants round.

Sunshine Coast community groups receiving funding will be able to deliver one-off projects, events and activities that benefit the entire region. One community group set to benefit is the Maleny and District Men’s Shed Incorporation, having been awarded $6394 in the Community Facilities category to go towards erecting a new shed.

Men’s Sheds play an important role in improving men’s health and wellbeing by offering inclusive places for all men from a local community to come together, and

providing important health information.

The local Men’s Shed now has more than 50 members and the funding will go towards erecting a shed recently donated by the Australian Defence Force. The new shed will provide space for additional activities as well as offering a breakout space for meals and information sessions.

This recent round of funding awarded grants to many important community projects, including youth programs, creative and cultural events, and facility upgrades.

Council’s Community Grants Program acknowledges the valuable contribution community groups and their volunteers make towards fostering a strong community.

Other successful grant applicants include

Save Our Streets Ltd, receiving $7500 for its 2022 National Reconciliation Week Cultural Awareness Project, Wan’diny NAIDOC Committee, which received $10,000 towards the NAIDOC 2022 Wan’diny Family Fun Day, and Sunshine Coast Film Festivals, which received $15,000 towards the 2022 Sunshine Coast Film Festival.

The latest Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grant round is open!

Funds are aimed at developing emerging and established artists, creative practitioners and producers and are awarded to projects that align with the Sunshine Coast Arts Plan 2018 – 2038.

There are five funding categories and three RADF funding rounds per year with closing dates of 1 March, 1 July and 1 November.

FACT Over the past quarter Council has:

• invested $6.5 million to rehabilitate and resurface 48.5 kilometres of local roads to improve the safety of these roads for the community; • assisted 83,568 customers through the development services counters and customer contact centres; • generated 1600 MWh of power from converting waste to electricity at the Caloundra Renewable Energy Facility, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 17,006 tonnes.

SWIMMING GREAT TO HEADLINE SPORTS SYMPOSIUM The Sunshine Coast Sports Symposium will bring together Australia’s leaders in sport, including more than 200 disability sports industry professionals, from 15 to 17 June at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

The symposium will incorporate the inaugural National Disability Sports Conference as a forum to discuss breaking down barriers to participation in sport and physical activity. Symposium keynote speakers include Australian Sports Commission CEO Kieren Perkins OAM and Brisbane 2032 board member and International Paralympic Committee member Robyn Smith. WHAT’S NEW WITH MOBILE LIBRARIES? Sunshine Coast Libraries is about to introduce a new mobile library timetable to continue serving the community in the most effective way.

The changes, effective from 30 May, have been based on an analysis of usage patterns and growth in the region.

As a result of the review, three stops have been updated – Meridan Plains, Palmwoods and Peregian Springs – and the Glass House stop will be replaced with a specialised service for local library members.

It’s an important time when First Nations and non-First Nations people come together to celebrate the achievements, commitments and partnerships of Elders past, present and future.

This year’s theme is Be Brave, Make Change, and asks all of us to learn about our shared histories and explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Council is committed to continuing to prioritise meaningful and collaborative working relationships with Traditional Custodians and First Nations people within our region to build a strong, inclusive and connected community on the Sunshine Coast.

Council adopted its third Reconciliation Action Plan in 2021 to strengthen relationships and support social and economic opportunities for the First Nations community of the Sunshine Coast, and since then has held many significant events including a First Nations Community Forum and supplier day.

TREKKING FOR A CAUSE Two passionate Sunshine Coast fundraisers are in Nepal to raise money for health causes close to home. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

M

ay is typically the most popular time of year for avid trekkers to tackle the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, with warmer temperatures and the typical high-altitude ‘jet’ winds moving away from the mountain.

This year, two Sunshine Coast health workers are in Nepal and on their own journeys to make a difference back home.

No stranger to the traversing the Himalayas, Nambour allied health worker Gary Mckitterick Gillett is in

Nepal rounding up his annual Trek for Parkinson’s Disease.

More than two years since he last set foot at Everest Base Camp, and holding the event virtually since 2020, Mr Mckitterick Gillett and his team at Trek Ready Himalayas raise money to support the Shake It Up Australia Foundation.

“So far we have raised $5000 and hope to reach our goal of $10,000,” he says.

“Every step we have taken and every metre we have climbed has been to help find a cure for Parkinson’s disease. Altitude

presents some challenges, but we were prepared and adapted well, taking our time.”

Meanwhile, Sunshine Coast dad and nursing director Lee Holmes is gearing up to trek the Everest region to raise money for distractive resources to support patients suffering symptoms of delirium.

“On May 29, I will be taking on my biggest fitness challenge yet,” he says. “I’ll be competing in the highest and most adventurous marathon in the world – the Mount Everest Marathon.

“This high-altitude adventure sports event in Nepal will see me crisscrossing the Sherpa trails of Khumbu Valley for 42 kilometres, and I hope to complete it within six to eight hours.

“Through this challenge I’ll be raising funds to help patients in hospital suffering symptoms of delirium.

“I have teamed up with Sunshine Coast hospital charity Wishlist to fund resources like iPads, games, blankets, robotic dogs and other distractive resources for a special project I am setting up to care for confused older patients within our hospital service.”

“This sponsorship will fund the enrolment of five students into the Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra program, delivering them access to renowned teaching, resources and opportunities,” he says. “Having recently attended a concert as part of the annual Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra camp, I was amazed by quality of the performances and phenomenal talent. MIDWIFE UPDATES HANDBOOK FOR PARENTS A semi-retired midwife is helping new parents navigate life with an infant.

Lois Wattis has practised as a midwife on the Sunshine Coast for the past 16 years and, at the request of her daughter, has written a book to share her knowledge with all mothers.

Now she is working in private practice as a lactation consultant. “I retired from my role as clinical lactation consultant with Sunshine Coast Health Service in July last year, after 14 years serving at Nambour General Hospital and then Sunshine Coast University Hospital when maternity services were relocated,” Ms Wattis says.

“Prior to that I worked at Selangor Private Hospital, Nambour in their wonderful midwifery-led maternity service.

“During this time, I have had the privilege of helping hundreds of local couples travel the steep learning curve of new parenthood.

“After my daughter gave birth to my grandson in 2011 she prompted me to write a book sharing my knowledge and practical tips, which had helped her make her own transition to motherhood.”

Ms Wattis released her book, New Baby 101 – A Midwife’s Guide for New Parents, in 2014 and recently updated the third edition to cover the changes in

Wishes granted in division six

Buddina United Soccer Club has had a big win, with council set to install a new and much-needed storage facility at the Brightwater Sports Field. This new nine-metre by 10-metre facility will be built next to the southern shelter and will enable the club to store its equipment on site for training and games, rather than having to transport all of it to and from the field. It’s a great result for the club, who I met with earlier this year to discuss their need for a permanent storage facility. Work will start on the new facility in early June and it should be ready for use by the end of the month, weather permitting.

In a major boost for local not-for-profit community groups, Sunshine Coast Council has announced more than $550,000 will support 95 local projects in its latest Major Grants round. The latest round of funding supports many important community projects, including youth programs, creative and cultural events, and facility upgrades.

Several local community groups reaping the benefits include Suncoast Spinners Wheelchair Basketball, which received $5000 towards Reverse Inclusion, its junior wheelchair basketball program. Zonta Club of Maroochy also received $4000 towards the Seeds of Change community forum event featuring speaker and author Jess Hill, who spoke about domestic and family violence.

TAKING A NEW VIEW

We all stumble, some of us even fall, writes Jane Stephens, so it’s a good thing we often get a chance to redeem ourselves and do better.

S

drug trafficking. His life was a shambles.

But he wasn’t going to stay down.

He gave up drugs, alcohol and social media and moved to the Sunshine Coast in late 2020.

He clawed his way back and, at age 34, had a serious crack at returning to the game thanks to the Sunshine Coast Falcons. Even after that dream was cut short by injury, he is dedicated to mentoring the young and the talented to help keep them from heading down the dark and wasteful path.

Society is structured to almost always allow for second chances. We teach our young to apologise and allow them to reset after making amends. Our justice system does everything to offer an offender a chance to straighten up rather than chuck them in the clink straight up.

On stage as host of the 2022 Billboard Music Awards last week, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs announced not only that he was back, but that we all were. He said a so-called post-pandemic society meant everyone has a second chance at doing life.

“Let’s do it bigger,” the rapper suggested.

Indeed. Whether it be in love, sport or career, if you are still breathing, you have a second chance.

econd chances give us a shot at being stronger, better and more together. Some come after mistakes or missteps, others after cruel blows that were not of our making.

So it is with swimmer Shayna Jack, who was reduced to grateful tears last week after she scorched a personal best time to book a spot on the national team for the world championships and Commonwealth Games.

Ms Jack, 23, had been away from competition for almost three years after serving a 24-month suspension for ingesting a banned substance. She has always said she would never knowingly take a banned drug, and her joy at such a convincing return was palpable.

Another who turned scars into stars is Jarrod Mullen, who told Sunshine Coast News recently that his transformation from fractured to fulfilled is complete.

He was an Australian schoolboy rep and played 211 games at the Newcastle Knights’ top echelon before his dramatic fall. He was banned in 2017 by the NRL’s peak body for using performance-enhancing drugs.

A year later he overdosed on the illicit kind. A year after that pleaded guilty to

he Olympics in 2032 are heading our way and there are massive discussions about infrastructure benefits leading up to it and after. So I am sure there will be some robust debate and differing opinions on what we need, which is great.

In among it all we have heard rumblings about Mooloolaba’s Loo with a View about whether it should be relocated or refurbished again with differing views.

Now I have heard the word ‘iconic’ used about the loo, which to me is a mass exaggeration – I cannot see anything iconic about it. For a start it is a tired old toilet block on prime real estate, with no view apart from the deck, which is fine but I for one am not eating my fish and chips on that deck – not with the battle between sea breezes and someone’s bowels battling out for victory.

The only people on that deck are either waiting to go, waiting for someone in there or are up here for a conference for the smell-impaired because I can’t imagine why anyone else would be there.

If those who want to keep it are so passionate, here’s an idea – make it a

proper loo with a view so you can actually see from where you are doing your business. They should take a leaf out of the Kiwi’s and South Australian councils’ books where the dunny plays music and it is all quiet soothing.

Maybe if Moooloolaba wants to be known for something, they could knock over that smelly eyesore and build a proper Loo with a View. If it were me designing, no deck would be required; just colourful outhouses all lined up side by side with a toilet and a shower in each one, a credit card for entry and security camera on the outside of the door so you get your photo taken on the way in to stop vandalism. The door would have a one-way glass panel so whatever you were doing you could see the golden sands of Mooloolaba Beach.

View and Poo, See and Pee, Scenic and Shower could be part of the tourism campaign. Build it and they will flock to Mooloolaba like seagulls on a chip.

Now that would be iconic and we certainly would be remembered for something. Then again, you could just knock the thing down.

WOMEN STORM THE 2022 FEDERAL ELECTION

School mornings are no fun in Sami Muirhead’s house, but she’s discovered that not all families are like hers.

F

amily sit-down breakfasts on weekdays are now a thing. I do not mean brunch in our pyjamas where we can eat as much bacon as we want.

No. I refer to my good friend who was parent bragging (pragging) to me and describing how once a week her four kids aged under 15 have a sit-down meal. At a table. With cutlery. And they make chit-chat with each other. Then they go to work and school with full hearts and stomachs.

I must admit I was confused, intrigued and a little nauseous all at once when I heard this report. Who has time to whip up pancakes and bacon in the morning?

Not at our house.

Mornings in our home are a blood bath. Bleary eyes, frequent tears, meltdowns and tantrums. And that is just me! But seriously, my kids are good kids.

They are not angels, but in the morning, they are just slow. Breakfast is toast on the go, and we spend our time in a frenzied search for matching socks. My kids want to stay in bed because they are not insane.

They do not want to hurry up like a military soldier and they certainly do not want to find mislaid swimming towels,

music books and sports hats. Do not even get me started on finding a water bottle with an actual lid that fits it.

I need to introduce some reward where the kids get handed 10 bucks if they just get ready without whinging, fighting or generally looking sadder than Whitney at the end of The Bodyguard. And for the record this mum friend of mine has time to change the sheets every week on every bed in the house.

How did this lady and I even become friends, because my kids have had a banana for morning tea for about, oh, 376 years? And yes, they are often half-black rotting bananas. My poor children will need a lot of therapy one day.

he message from last weekend’s vote was that the things that really matter to women and their communities’ matter at the ballot box too. Even if they were not part of the conversations the major parties were having.

We know that women have been trending away from the Liberal Party for almost 40 years. And we also know polls suggest women care about climate change more than men and, of course, we know they care about being respected and living in safety.

The most conspicuous winners were the so-called teal candidates.

From Zoe Daniel and Monique Ryan in Melbourne to Zali Steggall, Sophie Scamps, Kylea Tink and Allegra Spender in Sydney and Kate Chaney in Perth, politics-as-usual is being revolutionised by independent women.

Here we have seen a swathe of well-credentialed professional women secure stunning victories in metropolitan seats that have historically provided the Liberal Party with its power base. This is a trend started by former independent Cathy McGowan in 2013 in Indi. Ms McGowan, who has continued to advise the current crop of candidates, wanted local members who actually listened to their constituents.

The teals made gender equality one of their top priorities, also situating it within an interlinked set of policy positions including anti-corruption and climate change. And they have been rewarded with history-making wins. Their impact

Independent candidate Zoe Daniel on Australia’s political scene is already seismic and we’re barely 24 hours post-election.

But we also saw significant gains from women in other parts of the political spectrum. Liberal MP Bridget Archer held her seat against the tide, having stood up for integrity issues and LGBTIQ+ rights during the last parliament.

Also in Tasmania, Jacqui Lambie increased her Senate team to two, with the likely election of Tammy Tyrrell.

In Western Australia, Labor’s surprise success stories were female candidates like Zaneta Mascarenhas turning blue seats red. But in Sydney, independent Dai Le showed the major parties they can’t take local communities for granted, after she ousted parachuted Labor star Kristina Keneally.

This election is a stark warning about treating communities with contempt.

What have been some of the biggest challenges? Finding ways to grow while staying true to our values. For example, during cash-flow shortfalls, we could have used the money we were donating to our giveback projects, but that was a value we weren’t willing to compromise on.

CONTRACTOR OR EMPLOYEE: THE HIGH COURT HAS SPOKEN WORDS: Ebony Archer, Clifford Gouldson Lawyers One of the most difficult questions for many businesses in Australia is the classification of their workers and, in particular, if they are contractors or employees. Historically, Courts have had to complete a ‘multifactorial test’, which is an analysis of the ‘totality of the relationship’ taking into consideration elements such as the degree of control in the relationship, the ability of a worker to delegate tasks, ownership of tools of trade, the ability of a worker to refuse work, and the cost of rectifying defective work.

However, the High Court has recently revised its approach to the classification of contractors and employees by focusing on the rights and obligations which are established under the written terms of an agreement. In short, the High Court held that if the terms of the written contract between the parties characterised the relationship as that of an employee or, alternatively, a contractor, then in the absence of either party suggesting that the contract is unlawful, the contract operates on the basis of the type of relationship it establishes.

The take-home messages are that a Contractor Agreement should include terms that clearly articulate that the relationship between the parties is one of Principal and Contractor, businesses should review their Contractor Agreements to ensure they do not include any terms that are referable to the worker being an employee, and all Contractor Agreements should be in writing.

SMALL BUT MIGHTY They have always been the fabric of the Sunshine Coast, and now it is our small business owners’ time to shine. WORDS: Andrew Eves-Brown.

T

here’s been plenty of focus on small business this month, thanks to the Queensland Government’s annual Small Business Month campaign during May. With more than 33,000 businesses operating here, Sunshine Coast Council is advocating for the region to be the entrepreneurial capital of Australia, a sentiment also shared by Regional Development Australia CEO Paul Fisher at a business breakfast at Maroochy RSL earlier this month.

More than 250 entrepreneurs attended the event where the Sunshine Coast Business Awards were launched. Now in their 27th year, the awards recognise hard work, collaboration, a sense of community, integrity and outstanding business acumen. They provide a platform from which outstanding businesses can shine and set a benchmark for others to follow.

This month the Sunshine Coast Chamber Alliance also launched a special series of videos exploring business through the eyes of four award-winning Sunshine Coast entrepreneurs. The series, called Let’s be Frank about Business, gives the community a rare glimpse into the inner

workings of these businesses, offering tips that are relevant across all industries.

The Sunshine Coast Chamber Alliance is one of many groups that are part of the bigger picture, the economic fabric of our region. There are 13 chamber of commerce groups, five regional advocacy groups and almost 20 networks and agencies that cluster together or interweave and collaborate to ensure the regional economy is stable, growing and aligns with long-term strategic objectives.

Within the council, I work with a dynamic team that is well connected across our high-value industries and all of these

groups. The business support they provide comes in many forms and programs – from exploring the possibilities of exporting, promoting local procurement opportunities, encouraging business-tobusiness connections for a circular economy (ASPIRE), or offering access to the B-Well and Prosper online portal for a wealth of information across all areas of small business and wellbeing.

We are also working on a Retail Activation Program to bring together local small business operators and retail property owners to fill long-term empty retail spaces.

This will give new/startup and home-based

businesses the opportunity to try retail in some of the best locations on the Coast.

This will also create an introduction to potential business operators for retail property owners and managers.

Introduced last year, Buy Local Sunshine Coast raises awareness in our community about the importance of buying locally and encourages consumers to support local first. Businesses are invited to join the new Buy Local Sunshine Coast platform, which offers great opportunities to promote your services or products to a local, engaged audience. I think this program could have a huge impact on our economy if our community really embraces the notion.

TOP 10 GRANT TIPS There’s no doubt that grant funding can give organisations a boost. Businesses and not-for-profits can effect change and significant growth with funding.

But the issue can be that grant funders want to fund things that are not important to your organisation at that time. Few grants will fund vehicles, rent or new staff members for expansion. It is important to understand what the funder wants to fund, and how it will help them to reach their goals, while helping you with your goals.

For example, most Queensland small business government grants are looking to support established businesses so they create more wealth, employment and prosperity for Queensland. Some grants focus on startups, particularly innovative ones with directors who can prove their capability from past business successes.

Others focus on manufacturing or the arts.

Many businesses have had stressful experiences with grants when working to deadlines. So we believe it’s worthwhile for businesses to be ‘grant-ready’. Most grants have two to four weeks of preparation time until their submission deadline and this timeline can catch business owners off-guard. COVID-19 has changed the grants landscape, with fast turnaround grants popping up in an evolving funding environment.

This month we’ve seen a grant website crash under the demand, only to watch the grant fill in a staggering 90 minutes after it re-opened. Thankfully, not all grants are a race, but most have strict deadlines.

And we’re expecting substantial grant announcements next month after the federal election.

Some grants are an easy DIY – they just need a time commitment and some forward planning. Others are a bit more complicated, with many attachments.

HERE ARE OUR TOP 10 TIPS: 1. PLAN a project, or a variety of projects, so that you can be flexible around different grant offerings.

2. SEARCH for grant opportunities, by project or industry. Use the council’s free grant search to find grants at sunshinecoast.grantguru.com.au.

3. CHECK the grant eligibility before you

proceed. Your team could spend up to 50 hours on a large grant so it’s important to pick the right one.

4. READ the grant guidelines. Then read them again. Understand what the funder wants and ensure your project can fit.

Use their words.

5. EXPLAIN what you do in easy-tounderstand terms. Remember that the grant funder knows nothing about your business or your project.

6. CHECK examples of projects that the funder has previously funded and target your application accordingly.

7. DRAFT letters of support so supporters can easily accept or amend them.

8. ARTICULATE project outputs, outcomes, objectives and risks with clarity.

9. ORGANISE your timelines. Deadlines rarely extend and cannot be missed.

10. SPEAK with the grants officer to learn all sorts of great hints (not all grants allow this).

The key take-home message is that businesses need to be grant-ready – on the starting blocks and prepared for a winning application.

Often sellers attempt this difficult process themselves, normally messing it up, as they simply don’t know what to say or when to say it. It is common for sellers to let the presentation of their business and the equipment and vehicles get run down when considering selling. Asset value is always considered in a business appraisal, so you won’t be throwing your money away to have good gear and you will likely save money on repairs, maintenance and efficiency by doing so.

Buyers are now less likely to want to work hands-on in a business full time.

Gone are the days when business owners expected to work 60 to 70 hours per week.

The preference now is to have staff to do everything. They will pay a premium for businesses that offer key staff, so they have flexibility and can work on the business, rather than in it.

Your business will be more appealing to the market if you can make yourself redundant. Letting go is hard, however, if your business can afford to pay a wage for someone to do your role, you will enjoy it much more and likely attract a better result.

What does a little old lady, her Sydney Harbour mansions, her neighbours and a promise have in common?

The Supreme Court of New South Wales recently had to consider that very point! The Court had to decide whether a verbal promise by the elderly Mrs Murphy to leave her neighbours two multi-milliondollar harbourside properties in the affluent Sydney suburb of Birchgrove would override the terms of her Will.

The neighbours asserted that Mrs Murphy had promised to leave them her entire estate, including the harbourside properties, in exchange for the neighbours: (i) looking after Mrs Murphy as she aged; (ii) not moving away; and (iii) not carrying out building works on their own property, which would have blocked Mrs Murphy’s much-loved harbour view.

Mrs Murphy did not update her Will to reflect her promise.

When Mrs Murphy died, her Will only gifted the neighbours $25,000, with the rest of her estate passing to Mrs Murphy’s elderly siblings.

The unhappy neighbours sued!

What Projects Will the Funding Cover?

The Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia require parties to attempt mediation in parenting disputes before seeking a Judge to determine it through court. When an application is made, the Judge will decide the outcome primarily based on your child’s right to have a meaningful relationship with both parents and to be safe.

Where an agreement can be reached, either by negotiation or mediation, there are two preferred choices to record the terms. One is to apply for a Consent Order though court and this option does not require a court appearance. The Orders, once made, can be relied upon and enforced if a party is not complying with the terms. Court Orders can provide a roadmap in high-conflict matters requiring the assistance of the Court.

The alternative is to document a Parenting Plan. Parenting Plans can be relied upon as an agreement reached at a point in time about certain parenting matters, but they are not enforceable.

What is important is that thought is given to the range of issues that are important to your family, and that there is flexibility that supports the overall plan.

Next they investigated the landfill problem and were alarmed to learn such statistics as those shared on ABC’s War on Waste program that Australia is one of the most wasteful countries in the developed world, and that 70 per cent of the rubbish sent to landfill could be repurposed or recycled. This was all a great incentive to create playgrounds that help kids to be healthy while solving a major environmental problem in an impactful way.

FLINDERS STUDENTS REPURPOSE BIKES FOR PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT

H

ow might old or abandoned bikes be repurposed into children’s playgrounds to minimise waste in landfills?

This was the real-world problem for Year 10 design students at Matthew Flinders Anglican College to solve as part of their senior design curriculum.

In small groups, the 16 budding designers have been using design thinking to develop prototypes. The process requires them to learn problem solving, critical thinking, collaborating, communicating, evaluating and refining – all crucial 21st century skills that will be demanded by future recruiters and

employers across diverse industries.

The Flinders design students began their projects by exploring the first stage of design thinking: to empathise with the user and define the problem. They visited the Flinders primary campus to interview students in Year two to find out what makes a ‘fun’ playground, and then

Once their prototypes and ideas were ready for testing, the students pitched their repurposed playground equipment prototypes and ideas to students in Year five to gain valuable ‘client feedback’.

The primary students were impressed with how the designs not only enabled fun with friends outdoors but also tackled the environmental problem caused by bikes ending up in landfill.

The North Coast Connect Consortium of SMEC, Stockland, Urbis and KPMG explored upgrades to the North Coast Rail connection to facilitate faster passenger rail services between Brisbane and the Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast regions. The North Coast Connect business case steering committee included representatives from Sunshine Coast Council, Moreton Bay Council, Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.

he Property Investment Professional of Australia (PIPA) chair Nicola McDougall welcomes Labor’s Help to Buy policy as a potential way to assist some low- to middle-income earners into home ownership, as well as its pledge to build 30,000 new social and affordable housing properties over the next five years. But PIPA believes this is not enough and is calling on the new government to do more to encourage investment in rental properties.

On the Sunshine Coast, Troy Sussman of Think Investment is realistic about potential investment stock, saying, “There is not enough stock to relieve the rental crisis.” However, there are opportunities that will work towards providing more rental housing.

He says the Sunshine Coast Council and developers and builders have projects in the wings that will come to fruition and eventually provide extra rental stock. In the meantime he advises buyers looking to purchase investment to “look outside the box”.

example. “Nambour now has million-dollar properties,” he says.

He also notes that a fast train with the capacity to travel from Nambour to Brisbane in 60 minutes has been mooted.

eter King of Ray White Mooloolaba says there was a buzz in the air as a twobedroom unit sold under the hammer for $1,050,000.

Mr King says the unit at 27/143 Mooloolaba Esplanade set a record for a two-bedroom apartment in the complex.

The price not only met the vendor’s expectations but was also welcome news for one buyer who purchased a threebedroom unit for the same price six months before.

“That’s great news,” he says. “What’s mine worth now?”

The auction attracted five registered bidders and 27 bids.

The successful Brisbane buyer nearly didn’t make it.

“The auction was just about to launch, Mr King says. “And I saw this fellow walking down the hall waving at me.

“He had the time mixed up and thought he might have missed it.”

As it turned out, he just made it and was quickly signed up as a registered bidder.

Mr King says the 20- to 30-minute auction flowed smoothly. “It started at $750,000 and went up by 50,000s then 5000s and finally 1000s.”

The spacious apartment was built in the 1980s and could be renovated. “ It was all about the size and great position. The front features wide ocean views and from the back you can see the Glass House Mountains,” Mr King says.
