The future of paid parental

leave Both the Coalition and Labor are proposing changes to government-paid parental leave, so if you’re planning to have a family soon, it’s important to look into what each party is offering.

Instead, the Coalition will allow parents to completely share this leave flexibly between them as they choose, with no separate amounts earmarked for mothers or “dads and partners”. The Coalition will fix a design flaw in the income test by connecting scheme eligibility to household income, rather than individual income. It will also increase the income threshold that cuts off access at $350,000, allowing 2200 more families to access the scheme. Labor has a more generous plan. It promises to increase total leave from 20 to 26 weeks to be shared between parents. It also seeks to pay benefits at a person’s full salary. Labor aims to fund its proposed scheme from employer and government contributions. But the plan is scant on details, including how much this policy will cost, what proportion will be funded by business and government, and whether each parent will have leave earmarked for them. A group that would be better off under either plan is single parents. They would be

Despite this, Australia has one of the least generous parental leave schemes in the developed world. Both major parties propose to improve the paid parental leave scheme this election. If you’re planning to have children, it’s worthwhile understanding what each party promises. Their policies may affect your health, income and the opportunity to pursue your career differently. The Australian government provides working parents with paid leave at the minimum wage for up to 18 weeks. This scheme was introduced by Labor in 2011 and represented a leap in social policy, but it came quite late by OECD standards. It has since been adjusted to provide partners with two weeks of leave and increase leave-taking flexibility. This election, the Coalition promises to “enhance” the scheme, although it will keep the total leave amount shared between

Labor’s plan better promotes equal leave-taking, because it will pay either parent taking leave their full salary. Parental leave schemes in other countries offering higher salary replacement are funded by a combination of government, employer and employee contributions. The Australian scheme already works together with employer-paid leave as 60 per cent of Australian employers also offer paid leave. This arrangement creates differences in leave-taking between parents who can also use employer-paid leave and those without this privilege. This is inequitable and may translate to differences in mothers’ health outcomes. Labor has not clarified the details of its proposed government/employer-funded approach. More details are needed on how this scheme would interact with existing employer-paid parental leave policies and whether it would help address existing inequities. Labor’s plan better supports parent and child health (particularly for those without any employer-paid leave). Research has found six months’ leave after birth for mothers is optimal for their mental health, a minimum amount also suggested by the World Health Organisation for promoting breastfeeding and infant health. Labor will get Australia’s scheme closer to this benchmark. When fathers take leave, this is associated with better health outcomes for both mothers and fathers. It also supports children’s development. The Coalition’s plan doesn’t increase leave from the currently low entitlement. It also only allows mothers to take more leave at the expense of fathers (and vice versa), which may compromise health. This article was originally published in theconversation.com.

THE WAR OF WAGES Days out from the federal election, wage growth continues to be one of the most contentious issues between the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader. WORDS: AAP.

s almost 250,000 Sunshine Coast voters prepare to take to the polls this Saturday, the war of words on wages has continued. Wage growth and employment are two big ticket items on the political agenda ahead of what will be the first federal election since the COVID-19 pandemic swept the globe. Last week Prime Minister Scott Morrison hit out at the federal opposition’s minimum wage rise push, as Anthony Albanese flagged a Labor government would take its time to draft its submission to the industrial umpire. Mr Albanese said he would support a 5.1 per cent wage increase in line with the highest inflation figure in two decades, but indicated the mechanism by which a Labor government would seek the rise would be determined in coming weeks. The prime minister branded Mr Albanese’s statement as “reckless”. “He knows he got that wrong,” Mr Morrison said. “He knows he acted recklessly, and he’s been trying to cover his tracks ever since.” As of late last week, Mr Morrison had not put a figure on what an appropriate wage rise would be, but warned a rise and its flow-through effect on other wages could trigger higher inflation.

“Any potential support you might have got in wages would be clawed back in even higher interest rates and even higher inflation,” he said. “That’s not how you manage an economy.” Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the independent umpire would make its decision with a complete understanding of the economic consequences. Mr Albanese hit back, saying his message had been consistent in that he supports a real wage increase and the government couldn’t go over the top of the Fair Work Commission. “There is a cost of living of everything is going up except for wages. The idea that we would support a real wage cut for people on the minimum wage is an extraordinary claim,” he said. “What I have said consistently … is if the Fair Work Commission, that operates independently of government, makes a decision to not cut real wages and keep up with the cost of living, that’s something that I would welcome.” Mr Albanese accused the government of constantly spruiking a strong economy, but acting as if “the sky is falling in” when Labor supports a $1 an hour increase to the minimum wage. He said a Labor government would have until June 7 to draft a comprehensive

submission to the industrial umpire. The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) wants the Fair Work Commission to increase the minimum hourly rate by 5.5 per cent to $21.35, while business proposes a three per cent lift. ACTU secretary Sally McManus recently warned of more industrial action if employers refuse to increase wages amid rising profits and the highest start-up and survival rates in a decade. “Businesses are not just recovering, they are recovering very well,” she said. “If employers continue to insist on real wage cuts for workers, and through negotiations they don’t move off that, that’s what brings about strikes.” But the head of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the cost of doing business has also increased, citing Australian Bureau of Statistics data. “We’ve seen in the last three months … that three out of five businesses have been facing a surge in costs,” Andrew McKellar has told the ABC. “So businesses are facing a very tough time at the moment.” Meanwhile Mr Morrison has been forced to neutralise Labor’s attack on his character while on the election trail, admitting he can “be a bit of a bulldozer” and needs to change. He agreed he hadn’t

• Mr Morrison called his opponent a “complete weather vane” on border protection but Mr Albanese said Labor supported offshore processing, boat turnbacks and settlement in third countries.

INTEGRITY • Mr Morrison said he would bring forward a debate on a bill to establish a federal anti-corruption commission, if he could ensure it would be passed. • Mr Albanese promised to introduce legislation for an anti-corruption commission by the end of the year.

CHILDCARE • The Prime Minister said he did not agree with a Liberal MP who reportedly said childcare was “outsourcing parenting”. He said his government wouldn’t promise something they couldn’t deliver and a 90 per cent childcare subsidy for working parents was something all Australians would have to pay for. • Mr Albanese said the Prime Minister was wrong to view childcare as a cost rather than an investment in women, families and the economy.

unshine Coast lawyers from the not-for-profit and commercial sectors will exchange suits for board shorts and offices for blue skies for a special community event. Designed to showcase the range of free legal and allied services available on the Sunshine Coast, the inaugural Law at the Beach community event will help break down any fears people may have about seeking assistance. Suncoast Community Legal Service managing solicitor Julian Porter says the Regional Legal Assistance Forum (RLAF) members will put on the show to make the legal profession more accessible to the public. “Often people are in shock when a legal problem occurs and they just don’t know where to start,” he says. “There are actually more free services available than you might think, and plenty of people are able to manage their affairs with a bit of help in the right direction. “Plenty of matters do require legal representation, but again fear of the

unknown can stop people asserting their rights. “We just want to demystify the legal and allied sector and encourage people to not be afraid to ask for help.” Law at the Beach will be a fun, interactive morning by the water with information displays from the eight RLAF organisations, legal talks, legal health checks and live music. Attendees will also be able to meet and chat to lawyers from the private profession who specialise in personal injury, family law, wills and estates, commercial law and mediation. “We’ve got services that specialise in family law mediation, we’ve got financial counsellors, we’ve got people who can protect your loved ones from elder abuse, we’ve got First Nations legal services and services that can help tenants through the current housing crisis,” Mr Porter says. “ We’ve even got people who can keep you out of jail!” Law at the Beach is happening in Bukh Park, Alexandra Headland on Saturday, May 21 May from 9am to 1pm.

This June, the World Environment Day Festival is making its return to the Sunshine Coast. The 2022 theme is Only One Earth and it calls for transformational changes to address the climate and ecological crises. There are 17 events across the month including tree plantings, cultural workshops, live music and family-friendly activities. “This year we are excited to create bespoke experiences for people to nurture the environment and take collective action to protect wildlife,” festival co-ordinator Natalie Frost says. World Environment Day is on June 5 and, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has been held annually since 1974. REGION WAITS FOR BIOSPHERE NEWS

With the Sunshine Coast district recording around 80 break and enter type offences in the first two weeks of May, many considered as opportunistic, local police are reminding the community to lock up their homes, businesses and vehicles. “Simple measures such as ensuring all doors, windows and vehicles are locked can help prevent you becoming the target of an opportunistic thief,” Acting Senior Sergeant Justin Ward from the District Tasking and Coordination Centre says. He says it is important to keep valuables such as laptops, tablets, mobile phones, jewellery and wallets out of sight of opportunistic thieves.

The final countdown has begun as the Sunshine Coast community eagerly waits to find out if our region will be recognised around the world as a biosphere. If granted, it means UNESCO will officially recognise the Sunshine Coast as an international site of excellence and an area of natural beauty. Just four other sites in Australia, including the Great Sandy and Noosa biosphere reserves, are UNESCO-designated biosphere reserves. In 2019, on behalf of the community, Sunshine Coast Council developed the UNESCO Biosphere nomination and this June will find out if our region gains international recognition, joining the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

Bli Bli House Riverside Retreat placed in the top three best small hotel in the Australian and South Pacific categories and runner-up for best romance hotel in the South Pacific. Maleny’s Blue Summit Cottages won the award for best bed and breakfast in Australia and was named 23rd in the world.

Sunshine Coast Council has made a significant $9.5 million land acquisition to expand our green spaces for recreation, sport and conservation purposes to support our rapidly growing community. The 214 hectares on Rainforest Drive, Meridan Plains will become known as the Lower Mooloolah River Green Space. This will be one of the council’s five major green spaces, in addition to Mountain View, the Regional Interurban Break, Blue Heart Sunshine Coast and the coastline. The land is a long-term strategic acquisition and its final land uses will be determined through a future site assessment and master-planning process.

More than 100 swimmers braved the water on May 7 for an iconic charity swim raising money for special schools on the Sunshine Coast. The 2022 Island Charity Swim, a 10-kilometre swim around Old Woman Island off Mudjimba, has raised $70,000 that will go to enabling Currimundi, Nambour and Palmview special schools to invest in much-needed equipment and programs to support student learning. The Clive Bell Wingless Warrior and Wonder Woman team of Kerry-Lee Gockel and April Hulbert were the highest group fundraisers, raising more than $12,500, while long-time event participant Clive Bell was the highest individual fundraiser, raising $5000.

his week marks a very special time to recognise the incredible and tireless work of the many volunteers across the Sunshine Coast. National Volunteer Week (NVW) is Australia’s largest annual celebration of

volunteering and is on until the 22nd of May, with the theme ‘Better Together’. Often described as the backbone of a community, about 64,000 volunteers on the Sunshine Coast selflessly give up their time to fill a variety of rolls at local organisations.

One of the many dedicated residents being recognised this week is long-serving Wishlist volunteer Cheryl Jeynes. Ms Jeynes says volunteering is a rewarding experience that has led to many lasting friendships. “I have been volunteering with Wishlist since their accommodation facility Reed House opened in 2009 and I can honestly say it has been one of the most rewarding periods in my life,” Ms Jeynes says. “I feel like I am making a difference in my community; I get to participate in some life-changing projects instead of standing by and hearing about all the good work that gets done where I live. “As volunteers, we get to care for the guests at Wishlist’s accommodation facilities. “I love that we get to create a family atmosphere and a home away from home to help make their journey a little less challenging. “My friendship circle has also broadened and I get to meet so many wonderful people from all walks of life.” To coincide with NVW, Wishlist gave its volunteers an exclusive look at the new Wishlist Centre, which is currently under construction. “This visit is about giving our amazing and dedicated volunteers a sneak peek

into the almost-complete Wishlist Centre, and to take a moment to say thanks for the valuable time and support they have given us over the years,” Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe says. “Wishlist has around 250 active volunteers who, since 1998, have contributed countless hours of volunteering, which has enabled Wishlist to raise more than $19 million to deliver vital medical equipment, medical

Anarchy recently placed fifth in the world for hip-hop dance

team of talented Sunshine Coast dancers has reason to celebrate after earning themselves a fifth-place world ranking. Warana hip-hop crew Anarchy recently competed at the IASF (International All Star Federation) Worlds in Florida against the best from around the globe.

The team from Sunshine Coast Cheerleading has been working for five years to achieve the dream of qualifying for the competition. Anarchy is made up of seven girls aged between 15 and 22. Sunshine Coast Cheerleading coach, choreographer and hip-hop athlete Dharma Partington says it was a surreal experience to finally step onto the international stage.

“All of our girls that travelled to America have had the dream of competing on the world stage since they were little,” the 22-year-old says. “To be surrounded by so many athletes with the same goal and passion was unlike anything we have experienced before. “I remember standing on stage waiting for our music to start, being blinded by the stage lights and hearing all seven of us hyping each other up. “There is no feeling that can compare to standing on that stage and representing your country.” Competing against 14 teams, the competition was split into two days with a semi-final and finals round. “Everyone competes in the semi-final round in front of a panel of prestigious judges to narrow it down to the top eight in the world,” Ms Partington says. “Only these eight teams advance into the finals. All we wanted was to make the finals, which would have already been a massive achievement. “We are beyond words at this point; being announced as fifth in the world is such a surreal feeling that we are still pinching ourselves over.” Anarchy also brings home a third place for Australia in the Nations Cup from the event. COLOURFUL ART INSTALLATION BRINGS JOY TO YANDINA “The artwork explores the theme of hope and new beginnings,” Ms Blake says. A joyous explosion of colour is hard to miss as you walk through a rainforest trail in Yandina, and it could not be any timelier thanks to a recent deluge of rain. Nearly 1000 rainbow umbrellas are suspended above the rainforest at The Ginger Factory, thanks to a recent collaboration with local artist Sophy Blake. Ms Blake spent 100 hours creating the aptly named Rainbrella Project, which hopes to bring joy, happiness and peace to all who journey through its colourful paths.

ANNUAL GIVE ME 5 APPEAL KICKS OFF WITH A ROAR The roar of Harley-Davidson motorbikes will signal the start the annual Give Me 5 appeal this year. The Sunshine Coast Harley Owners Group (HOG) is teaming up with the appeal on Sunday, June 5 to help make hospital experiences better for sick kids. All through June, 92.7 MIX FM’S Give Me 5 appeal’s host of volunteers, community organisations and local businesses will come together to raise funds for child health services through Sunshine Coast charity Wishlist. Event co-ordinator Lisa Bathersby

says the HOG Ride is traditionally at the end of the month but has been moved forward to kickstart fundraising. “I spoke to many who attended last year who said the day touched their hearts after previously going through the stress and helplessness of having a sick child in hospital,” she says. “The day is … one of the most memorable Give Me 5 events.” The event will wind through the Sunshine Coast hinterland with morning tea and lunch stops in the Glass House Mountains and Palmwoods. You might have noticed some local roads are feeling smoother. Road spray seal works have been completed for a number of division five roads including Hodgens and Crohamhurst roads at Crohamhurst, Nicklin, Chevallum and Old Chevallum roads at Palmwoods, and Ballantyne Court, Glenview. The road widening project at Obi Lane, Maleny has been finished as well. Some road rehabilitation and pathway damage remains outstanding, but weather permitting these works should be completed by the end of June. Time to dig deep Maleny Showgrounds Bushcare Group is calling for extra hands to help protect and restore the original subtropical rainforest

of the Blackall Range. The group meets on the second Sunday of each month, to improve a location either by weeding or planting. The group says it’s very satisfying seeing something that is improved and special for the ecology of our area. Did you know 18 volunteers in 2018 spared 200 hours of their time removing 30 wheelie bins of weeds and planted 151 plants? I encourage our community to either join or improve their area. THE BEST AND WORST

After conquering the Island Charity Swim this year, Jane Stephens reflects on endurance, skill and the generosity of our community.

ome things are just bigger and more important than the individual – the ocean, a worthy cause, love, community. One example was the recent Island Charity Swim, a test of endurance that involved swimmers and their supervisors venturing a very long way off our coastline in the moody, unsettled dawn only to emerge, bedraggled, on a far-off shore several hours later. From Mudjimba Beach, around Old Woman Island and into Mooloolaba, it is a tough swim, and this year’s event delivered pain, sea-sickness and tears as well as satisfaction to its participants. Why people participate at all is a mystery to some, but the reasons are two-fold: the challenge and the cause. The cause is core to the event – the swim raises money for the Coast’s special schools, to give kids with disabilities gear and opportunities the schools can’t afford. This year, organisers raked in more than $66,000. Amazing during a pandemic. The mammoth amount was gathered in 924 donations, something that should make all 26 fundraisers (and 16 teams) and their supporters glow with pride.

While the cause is for community, the challenge of the swim is personal. Some did it in teams as a kind of loose relay. I was part of one such team this year. Others, incredibly, do the whole thing solo. The Island Charity Swim is a feat of organisation and each year the boundaries are tested to allow it take place at all. For starters, having a hundred or so swimmers thrashing about in open water in whatever weather and with all manner of creatures under and around them would make the most hardened safety officer blush. Teams are required to have a boat large enough to accommodate all members – in part, in case a shark is spotted and everyone has to get out of the water – and that is a bridge too far for many hopefuls. Not everyone knows a boatie willing to give their vessel, skill and three or four boring hours of their time as they bob along behind a swimmer who inches, snail-like, along the roughly 10-kilometre route. Every individual and team also needs a willing paddler to guide them home. There are so many elements that must come together for the Island Charity Swim to happen. But when they do, the ripple effects are felt far and wide.

n a daily basis, I think most of us see the very good and the very ordinary in human behaviour. Just the other day I was walking my boy George. I was at the poo bag dispenser. Well, actually about the fourth one on my walk that was empty after I had used my last one. I was a little nervous my boy wasn’t quite finished. Anyway, a lady going the other way offered to give me hers as she was nearly home. Awesome. I walked about another kilometre and there sitting in the middle of the beautiful park in front of the multimillion-dollar unit development was a double bed that some idiot had dumped beside the rubbish bins. I bet that wasn’t in the brochure when they sold the units. Welcome to Wurtulla? Within 10 minutes I saw the good and the bad of human nature. I mention this because last weekend I saw some amazing humans at the 20th Island Charity Swim raising money for Nambour, Currimundi and Palmview special schools. After a couple of years of COVID it was nearly brought to its knees but long-time supporter and marathon swimmer

Brendan Neil and Seven’s Rob Brough resurrected it with a heart-wrenching movie about why these kids need to have that same opportunities as the rest of us. It was heart-warming to see the interest this year and I think it will now be with us forever thanks to those boys, plus all involved. The highlight for me was my new hero The Wingless Warrior Kerry-Lee Gockel, who swam the whole way with flippers on, which sounds okay until you take into consideration she was born with no arms. Some great humans were involved. Apart from a guy who came down to the finish line and asked to talk to the person in charge as he wanted to complain about the noise the coffee cart was making as it was annoying him in his unit. Wow, he had to weave his way through students from the three schools who were greeting finishers to deliver that piece of drama in his life. Now maybe he had a circumstance like someone was unwell in his unit. If so I apologise, if not it was only a whinge. I might get the double bed from Wurtulla dropped off in front of his joint and then he will have something to whine about.

BAD-BOY BORIS As Boris Becker settles into life in jail, Sami Muirhead reflects on the tennis champion’s wild life off the court.

oris Becker is behind bars and I have found myself spending hours reading about his flamboyant lifestyle and reliving the golden days of tennis in the 1980s and ’90s. Boom Boom was sent to jail for two-and-a-half years after being found guilty of four insolvency charges relating to bankruptcy. At the height of his career, Boris had six Grand Slam titles, three Wimbledon titles, a cabinet packed with trophies and a $68 million fortune in prize money and sponsorship deals. That was in the ’90s, so imagine what that would equate to now. He was found guilty of hiding millions of dollars’ worth of assets, including two Wimbledon trophies, to avoid his debt. Born in West Germany, he rose to fame at the age of 17 when he became the youngest Wimbledon men’s singles champion in 1985. The rest of us were crimping our hair and dancing to Madonna while this teenager had a steely focus on tennis. But the pressure all became too much and Becker started his battle with drugs and booze. It was the magic decade of tennis and I could rattle off dozens of names who thrilled us on court including Stefan

Edberg, Martina Navratilova and Ivan Lendl. Off the court it became Becker’s love life that made sizzling headlines. Asked once why women seemed to find him attractive, he replied: “No idea. I am not especially rich, I’m not especially pretty, I’m no Adonis and my manhood isn’t over-enormous.” He got hitched in 1993 and had a few kids. But a notorious tryst with Russian waitress Angela Ermakova in a cupboard captured the world. In his autobiography about the one-night stand he said: “She left her table for the toilet. I followed behind and we had five minutes of small talk before we got down to business.” That five-minute fling led to the conception of a daughter with Angela, who faxed him later to tell him the news. His wife was also pregnant at the time so it all went pear-shaped from there. Becker spent the following decades in many relationships and living the high life. But it all caught up with the 54-year-old. And back to those Wimbledon trophies he hid. How do you think that played out with Scotland Yard? What planet are you living on if you can misplace two massive trophies and matching shields. They do not look like your regular salad platters.

THE BIG PICTURE: BOND MARKET Major economy 10-year bond yields have risen dramatically, with the G7 yield rising ~170bps from record lows to about 2.1 per cent, the US by ~230bps to about 2.8 per cent and Australia by ~220bps to above three per cent. The key drivers of this move have been strong recoveries from the COVID downturn, a surge in inflation to 30-year highs and a pivot in central bank policy. Ahead we expect the bond bear market to continue for the following reasons. 1) Yields are still low by historical standards and vulnerable to a high growth inflationary environment. While the rise in bond yields has been substantial, it has been from record low yields of -0.6 per cent to 0.8 per cent across major bond markets. Since mid-2020 all major economies have fully recovered, G7 inflation has surged to a 30-year high, unemployment has fallen to around 50-year lows and monetary policies to date have been reactive rather than proactive. Even with the bond bear markets to date, yields are still low by historical standards. The G7 yield is marginally above the post-GFC average of 1.9 per cent, but well below the long-term low-inflation era average of 3.6 per cent

(post-1992). Australia is around the post-GFC 3.1 per cent but also far below the long-term 5.1 per cent and pre-GFC 6.7 per cent averages. In real terms (in other words interest rates less inflation) the picture is far worse. 2) Excess liquidity conditions should reverse, tightening financial conditions The combination of zero rates and unprecedented quantitative easing led to an extreme acceleration in money supply growth and the excess liquidity to help drive asset prices. Indeed, G7 money supply is up 32.4 per cent from preCOVID levels with the US even more extreme: M3 up 40.9 per cent. Ahead we expect central banks to launch substantial quantitative tightening programs, reversing a material part of their 2020-21 QE largesse. Large bondselling programs should reduce money supply, tighten liquidity conditions and pressure asset prices. In summary, growth is booming, fundamentals are strong, inflation is at multi-decade highs and the balance sheet issue is primarily with sovereigns. As such, we see bond yields as still low and needing to move much higher to address elevated inflation risks. For equities, rising bond yields increase the cost of capital and the discount rate applied to future cash flows, reducing their present value. The family spirit that contributed to the success of the John R Turk electrical wholesaling company before it was sold 20 years ago has led three of the siblings to settle at GemLife Pacific Paradise. The human brain and spinal cord are surrounded by a clear liquid called cerebrospinal fluid or CSF. Within the brain are four cavities, called ventricles, that are responsible for producing and storing CSF. When this fluid accumulates in the ventricles it can cause symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s disease, such as loss of interest in daily activities, forgetfulness and short-term memory loss and changes in personality and behaviour. Along with cognitive decline, patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) often have difficulty walking, poor balance and are more likely to have falls. Patients with NPH also experience urinary incontinence. The condition primarily affects people in their sixties and seventies and can be left undiagnosed or misdiagnosed as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. Diagnosing NPH can be done with brain imaging, such as MRI or CT, clinical examination by a neurosurgeon and CSF tests such as a lumbar puncture. Because the symptoms of NPH can vary, it is recommended to be examined by a neurosurgeon that has experience in the evaluation of brain disorders. This can be arranged through a referral from your GP.

Bladder cancer is an aggressive cancer with historically a poor prognosis. It is estimated 3000 people were diagnosed and more than 1000 died with bladder cancer in Australia in 2020. Many tumours are detected early but have a high chance of recurrence – when they recur, they are often incurable. The mainstay treatment for advanced bladder cancer has been chemotherapy. While effective, response to treatment is often short-lived. But thankfully there have been significant improvements in understanding and treatment of these cancers. Immunotherapy is useful in preventing recurrence of disease after surgical resection. Immunotherapy given after chemotherapy also increases the time until further progression of disease and significantly improves survival in advanced disease. Targeted agents and antibody treatments have also come on the scene in the trial setting, with game-changing results. Early signs of bladder cancer include blood in the urine, urinary frequency, and discomfort. If experiencing any of these, consult your GP.

Ingredients • 5 large organic potatoes • 1 large organic onion, sliced • 500g organic mushrooms, sliced • 30g Mingle Hearty Stroganoff Seasoning • 2 tbsp organic tomato paste • 300ml vegan stock or stock of your choice • Fresh rosemary • Salt and pepper • ½ cup soy or oat milk • Knob organic butter (optional)

Method 1. Wash the potatoes and cut into 2cm cubes. Place the potatoes into a medium-sized saucepan and fill with cold or hot water. Place the saucepan on the stove and bring to boil. Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to a medium temperature and boil lightly for approximately 15 minutes or until the potatoes are tender.

6. Remove the potatoes from the heat, drain and add back into the same saucepan. Add salt and pepper and the oat or soy milk. Using a potato masher, mash the potatoes until creamy and fluffy and there are no visible lumps. Add a knob of butter if you wish and place the saucepan lid back onto the saucepan so the potato doesn’t get cold. Leave the saucepan off the heat. 7. When the stroganoff is ready, place a helping of the potato onto a plate and top with the stroganoff. Season with salt and pepper to taste. A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER Agents agree that after the heady days of late 2021, current sales activity offers more for buyers and sellers.

EIQ zone chair Matt Deisel says since property sales peaked in October and November last year, real estate activity has settled to a more sustainable level. He says that when the market was at its height, people would often comment: “You must be liking this.” However, his response was the opposite. Basically, he says, there would be up to 20 people looking to buy a property, but only one would succeed. “That means the rest were unsuccessful and disappointed,” he says. “And we don’t like seeing that.” Mr Diesel says the current property climate enables agents to provide a more personal service. “It’s good to get back to helping people.” However he adds that the mix of buyers remains the same. “There are still international, national and local buyers.” And as for the interest rate rise, he sees that as a prompt for more sales. “Besides all the hype – in reality the rate rise is actually still very low. Many people recognise this and are seeing it

as their last chance to get in and secure low fixed rates.” As for identifying where buyers are coming from, Ray White Mooloolaba and Kawana director of sales and marketing James Goldsworthy lets the figures speak for themselves. “In the September 2021 quarter 46 per cent of our sales were to interstate or international people,” he says. “Since January this year 35 per cent of our sales were to outsiders – so yes, there is a change.” Ross Cattle of Define Property agrees there has been a change in the market

and echoes Mr Diesel’s analysis. “We had our biggest sales the week before Christmas,” he says. “But this was an overheated market and not sustainable at that volume.” However, he says there’s still a high demand. “The heat has gone out of the market, but the prices are still there.” The latest Regional Movers Index* released on February 17, 2022 and covering the December quarter notes the Sunshine Coast is still just below the Gold Coast as the most popular destination for metro-movers.

SUNSHINE COAST STATISTICS The population of the Sunshine Coast is forecast to grow to more than 500,000 people by 2041. It is anticipated that we will require a total of more than 217,230 dwellings. The council is planning ahead for this increased population through the Environment and Liveability Strategy. The population, dwelling statistics and demographics of the Sunshine Coast between 2021 and 2041 is forecast below: • There will be an increase of approximately 166,580 people, or more than 8300 people per year. • The majority of population growth will be provided through net migration (99 per cent of all population growth). • The largest of population increases will be those aged 75 years and over, and the second largest will be 40- to 54-year-olds (in other words, more established families). • There will be an increase of approximately 71,230 dwellings and 68,370 households (or more than 3560 dwellings and 3420 households per year). unshine Coast locals were the successful buyers at two auctions run by Pam Thomas of Ray White on the weekend. Despite the wet weather, a hot price was achieved for a three-bed, three-bath and two-carport unit at Mooloolaba on the weekend. Ms Thomas believes the one-of-a-kind apartment in the Saffire complex, at 14-16 Marjorie Street, was deserving of the undisclosed, but above-reserve, price it sold for at auction. “It went for just marginally shy of a record-breaking price for the Saffire complex,” she says. “The biggest price was for the penthouse and that’s different again.” She says units of this size were as “scarce as hen’s teeth” and the sale price recognised its unique value. There were five active bidders and a local bidder achieved the sale.
