From the editor I’ve always envied those who can paint or draw beautifully. Let’s just say when it came to the arty gene, I missed out big time! However, I did surprise myself when I went along to one of the popular sip and paint events with my daughter recently and discovered that maybe I do have some artistic flair after all. I just had to take the time to find it – a little champagne might have helped get the creative juices flowing too! With today’s fast-paced lifestyle, allowing ourselves the time to switch off our screens and get back to basics, whether it’s painting or drawing or creating a piece of art, has never been more important. Most of us can remember spending hours with our paints and colouring pens or making things out of whatever we could find around the house to keep ourselves amused as children, but somehow the pressures of
school, work and study take over and, sadly, we lose touch with that creative outlet. In our feature story this week, we chat with Olga Garner-Morris, talented artist in residence at this year’s Immanuel Arts Festival, who says being artistic is inherent in all of us if only we take the time. Now in its 41st year, the festival is testament to the thriving visual arts scene on the Sunshine Coast and showcases hundreds of stunning artworks by students from across southeast Queensland as well as established and emerging artists. Rate rises will continue

After the Reserve Bank of Australia lifted interest rates last week, experts say by the end of the year borrowers could be paying back an extra $600 a month on a $500,000 mortgage.
L
ast week Reserve Bank Governor Philip Lowe announced he would be lifting the cash rate for the first time in a decade, by 0.25 percentage points, taking it from 0.10 per cent to 0.35 per cent. Most market economists thought the bank would raise rates, but they were divided as to whether it would start small by lifting rates from 0.10 to 0.25 per cent, or jump all the way to 0.50 per cent. The bank seems to have been similarly torn and come in halfway between. The hike comes despite the bank’s previous statements that it was keen to wait until the latest data on wages, due just before the election. The latest inflation news, which showed prices climbing much faster than expected, forced the bank to revise its stance and act quickly to tap on the brakes. With so-called ‘trimmed mean’ inflation (the RBA’s preferred measure of underlying inflation) jumping to 3.7 per cent in the March quarter, the bank’s goal of having underlying inflation back in its target band has been fulfilled. Indeed it is now just above the target band.
Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia Philip Lowe The only question the Reserve Bank board had to consider was whether inflation was sustainably back in the target band, something it has said it would need to see before it lifted rates. A sustainable increase in prices is only likely when wages are also growing faster, which is why the bank was initially planning to wait for the wage news. But it says its business liaison program (the regular meetings it has with businesses) has told it businesses are expecting to lift wages by much more than they have so far, meaning the official wage growth figures should be about to climb. These wage rises would be driven by the difficulty in finding staff, and greater demands from staff given what’s happening to the cost of living. Workers may be becoming keener to walk if they don’t get what they want. Treasury analysis of Tax Office data finds that workers who move jobs typically get pay rises of eight to 10 per cent. The higher inflation has been driven by a series of large, hopefully temporary,
shocks, most notably Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Australia’s floods, and the COVID lockdowns in China. We don’t know how long the foreign shocks will last, but if they quickly subside, it would take domestic price pressure to make high inflation sustainable.
“Financial markets are pricing in [a cash rate of] 2.5 per cent by the end of the year” That’s why news of higher ‘nontradable’ (domestically driven) inflation convinced the bank the current inflation is likely to last. Non-tradable inflation was 4.2 per cent over the year to March, suggesting much of Australia’s higher inflation was home-grown.
The Reserve Bank never lifts rates once. In his press conference, Lowe said it was “not unreasonable” to expect the cash rate to climb to 2.5 per cent. “How quickly we get there, and if we do get there, will be determined by how events unfold,” he added, pointing out that 2.5 per cent is the middle of the bank’s target band for inflation, meaning that when the cash rate gets there it will be zero in inflation-adjusted terms, rather than negative as it is at the moment. Financial markets are pricing in 2.5 per cent by the end of the year. That implies another two percentage points of hikes over the next six meetings, something that would mean a hike each and every month for the rest of the year. Many doubt that rates will rise that high that fast. However, over the past year the market pricing has proved more accurate than economists and the Reserve Bank’s own guidance, as the governor conceded in his press conference, describing his guidance as “embarrassing”. “We were told thousands of Australians would die from the pandemic, hospitals will be full, that we would have double-digit unemployment, perhaps 15 per cent unemployment, that deep scarring would last for years, perhaps decades,” he said, indicating things had turned out far better than government advisers expected. If fully passed on, today’s increase will add around $65 to the monthly cost of servicing a $500,000 mortgage. If the cash rate gets to 2.5 per cent, it’ll be an extra $600. Bringing art to the
people The Immanuel Arts Festival continues to be one of the most important events on the Sunshine Coast arts calendar, supporting established, emerging and student artists. My Weekly Preview meets a few of the talented locals who are part of this year’s event. WORDS: Ingrid Nelson.
R
evered Sunshine Coast artist Olga Garner-Morris still vividly recalls the thrill of her first visit to the Art Gallery of New South Wales as a child like it was yesterday. It was to be the beginning of a lifelong love affair with the world of art and sparked the beginning of what would become a successful career that has taken her as far as Buckingham Palace, where her work forms part of several collections. “I grew up in Wollongong in the 1950s and was taken on my first train ride to the gallery when I was just seven years old,” she says. “I was absolutely enamoured at everything I saw. “I remember asking the security guard at the gallery if I could please touch a painting. I wanted to touch a real painting. He very kindly lifted me up to touch it and that thrill never stopped.” Passionate about the arts and nurturing those who are interested in forging a career in visual arts, Olga is an artist in residence at this year’s much-anticipated Immanuel Arts Festival. Now in it’s 41st year, the festival is one of the Sunshine Coast’s most established arts events and offers an opportunity for artists of all ages, including students from any school across southeast Queensland, to showcase their talent and increase their profile. The event has grown from a small gathering to today’s thriving festival, which attracts nearly 300 emerging and

established artists and more than 800 artworks across a number of different genres including painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media, wearable art, film and creative. It also allows visitors and art lovers an opportunity to mingle with some of the artists and learn about the creative process behind each piece. Olga is a long-term avid supporter and promotor of the festival and says at a time when our young generation seem to be permanently tied to their phones and
don’t have time to dabble,” she says. “We need quiet time; time to think, time to be creative, which is very difficult for young people today.” Known for her stunning Australian landscapes, Olga began painting as soon as she could hold a pen and when it comes to trends, she sets her own agenda. “I am not a follower of trends in art. My preference is the great Australian landscape. I have taken Australia with me in all my major exhibitions overseas. Showing the natural beauty of my country

computer screens, the encouragement of expression through art has never been more important. And it’s something she says comes naturally to all of us from a very early age. “I would say art is inherent in every child because a lot of children will draw or paint before they write the ABC or go to school. It’s a natural ability to be creative, but of course once you go to school you are under different pressures and you
has brought me success but I also enjoy creating abstract works to allow colour and the form of paint to do its own thing. It’s marvellous to watch paint move. I often add a touch of realism to these paintings which allows the viewer to relate to the composition.” Olga’s works are represented in the collections of Queen Elizabeth, the late Prince Philip, Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana.

Immanuel Arts Festival convenor Lauren Nielsen works tirelessly with a team of parent volunteers to ensure artists across the region are given an opportunity to showcase their work in a gallery setting. “It’s a huge job that takes about six myweeklypreview.com.au

FEATURE STORY months of planning, but everyone is so passionate about it and it’s great to see it come to life,” she says. “We have two categories – the open category for adults, both emerging and established, and the student category is open all school students across southeast Queensland from Prep to Year 12, so we will probably have over 100 students and over 300 artists in total participating in the festival.” Well known for its arts program, including dance, drama, music and visual arts, Immanuel Lutheran College has a strong focus on encouraging students to take part in the arts and offers a number of opportunities for students throughout the school year. “We have a very strong focus on the arts,” Lauren says. “The primary and secondary teachers really support the festival. They are the ones encouraging students to give it a go because it can be daunting as a teenager to put your work out there to be judged.” More than just student art show, Lauren says the Immanuel Art Festival is for the entire Sunshine Coast community, with something to suit all tastes. “It’s really about the college supporting the visual arts community, which is thriving on the Sunshine Coast. In addition to all the beautiful artwork, we also have a large homeware section with timber work, vases, jewellery and much more. There really is something for everyone and to suit all budgets. “Last year we sold over $50,000 of artwork, which was a bumper year for us. We are hoping to do something similar this year, so it’s supporting local artists and putting money back in their pockets.” Most importantly, Lauren says you don’t have to be a lover of art or even understand it to enjoy the festival. “It’s a lovely day out. You can have a look around the gallery and then stop and have a coffee or some lunch and entry is just $5 so it’s very affordable,” she says. “It’s all about giving artists the
opportunity to showcase their work in a gallery setting. We don’t have a selection process, which a lot of galleries do. We open it to all artists so it’s giving those who are just starting out an opportunity to showcase their work. They also see their work alongside experienced artists, which is important for our students to see where it can take them and what opportunities are available to them. “You will find people stop and talk to each other about the different artworks. The conversations inside the gallery and the connections that are made are unbelievable.” Inspired by photos of her intrepid parents’ travels, this year’s student artist

in focus, Zoe Kamarinos, has been painting for as long as she can remember. Recognised in many competitions including the Young Archie and Noosa Portrait Prize, the talented Year 12 student’s entry to the festival in 2021– an oil painting called Tibetan Prayer – was awarded best work. “My mum always tells me her stories
of her travels around the world and she and her friends have given me their travel photos to paint,” Zoe says. “The Tibetan Prayer painting was inspired by a photo of a woman in the foothills of the Himalayas. The prayer wheel she is holding is a Tibetan Buddhist prayer that gives good karma. I found it interesting to learn about everything in the picture as I painted her.” Immanuel Lutheran College offered Zoe an arts scholarship in 2018 and continues to proudly support her in this field. “I’ve been on the art scholarship since grade eight and I have been in the festival since I was in primary school and have represented Immanuel Lutheran College in art competitions. It has opened up so many opportunities for me,” she says. Zoe continues to practise her skills through weekly classes at Art School Co, where she recently accepted an offer to teach primary school students. “I have been going to art classes at the Art School Co for quite a while and I am
very inspired by my teacher Jessica Le Clerc. I was offered a position at the art school this year, which is amazing. It’s really cool being around everyone that loves art. It’s nice to work with the little kids – they are so talented and creative.” With a focus on colour and portraits, Zoe is currently working on her brush strokes and capturing the character and emotion in her portraits. She is excited about her role as student artist in focus this year and the opportunities it offers her and other emerging artists. “I love seeing everyone’s work. It’s so diverse and across so many mediums including some pretty cool 3D work,” she says. “It’s also interesting to talk to people about my work and what they think about it.” There is no doubt that this is only the beginning for the talented young artist.

COOLUM SURFER’S BIG WIN Sunshine Coast surfer Isabella Nichols has broken down in tears after winning one of surfing’s toughest events, the Margaret River Pro. The 24-year-old from Coolum entered the fifth stop on the tour ranked 13th in the world and needing to win the West Australian surf event to sneak into the top 10 and avoid the dreaded WSL mid-season cut. Ms Nichols produced a two-wave total of 12.94 to see off Hawaiian Gabriela Bryan (10.00) in a tense final on May 4. After the victory Ms Nichols rocketed to fourth in the standings, putting her in the hunt for a top-five finish and a spot in the end-of-season finals.
Small business in Queensland has gained a strengthened voice with a new Queensland Small Business Advisory Council to represent small business interests to the state government. Launching as part of Queensland Small Business Month, Minister for Employment and Small Business Di Farmer says the advisory council will mean better advocacy and support for Queensland’s 448,000 small businesses. The council is made up of 10 members and includes Sarah Graham-Hooper from La Vida Restaurant and Privato in Noosa Heads. “Together, the advisory council and the Small Business Commissioner will help ensure that Queensland’s small businesses have a strong voice and direct input to the government on issues important to them,” Minister Farmer says.

ENDING DFV TOGETHER The community, support services and police all have a role to play in ending domestic and family violence. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

annah Clarke and her three beautiful children were never given the opportunity to live the lives they truly deserved. To honour them, and all victims of domestic and family violence (DFV), during May we shine an important light on the issue.
The theme for Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month 2022 is ‘All of us, together’ and it aims to drive home the message that to achieve real and lasting positive cultural change, all levels of society need to be involved and act against DFV. It comes as more than 250 people
gathered at a candle-lighting vigil and march held at Cotton Tree Park on May 4 to mark the month. The annual event has been held by Centacare since 2000. Acting Sergeant Maria O’Brien sees firsthand the effects of DFV in our region. She is working in the DFV co-ordinating role for the Sunshine Coast district, dealing with high-risk couples and families as part of the Queensland Police Service’s Vulnerable Persons Unit (VPU). Acting Sgt O’Brien tells My Weekly Preview local officers spend 40 per cent of their time responding to domestic violence (DV) occurrences. As part of her role, she conducts daily occurrence reviews identifying couples and families at risk. “We review all of the domestic violence occurrences across the Sunshine Coast and ensure involved persons are linked in with appropriate support serves,” she says. “I run high-risk collaborative meetings with external organisations twice a week, like IFYS, Queensland Health, Centacare and the Department of Child Safety. “The priority is victim support and perpetrator accountability and that in our unit we have more time to spend with our victims. Our unit works a lot in the prevention and disruption space rather than just the responding and investigating.”
Acting Sergeant Maria O’Brien She says domestic violence is often a “hidden crime” that goes undetected, but increased awareness and education is bringing more cases to the attention of those who can help. “When we work in it every day, we do forget the general population isn’t aware of the amount of DV that is occurring. “There has been an increase in the reports of domestic violence, but it is estimated that domestic violence is still 80 per cent under-reported. An increase in reporting means there are now more people confident enough to report it. We want to increase the community’s trust so they do report it.” Acting Sgt O’Brien says Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month is a way to recognise the community

With the over-representation of domestic violence we require the support and assistance from support services. “The VPU acts as the conduit between the support services, so it’s wonderful to have those connections. “With all the public awareness and engagement this month, it shows we really do need to deal with this together.” Hoping to create practical and meaningful changes for victims and their families, Small Steps 4 Hannah has been pivotal in educating and advocating to ‘HALT’ the cycle of domestic violence. The charity was set up by the Clarke family after the tragic murders of Ms Clarke and her children Aaliyah, six, Laianah, four, and Trey, three, on February 19, 2020. Recently visiting the region to launch a mapping tool to help DV victims, Ms Clarke’s father Lloyd Clarke spoke of the important work making proactive changes. Small Steps 4 Hannah is funding The HALT Map, a project being delivered thanks to Sunshine Coast charity DV Safe Phone. “Small Steps 4 Hannah saw that there was a real gap in delivery of service and we have been delighted to work together with [founder] Ashton [Wood] and the DV Safe Phone team to assist in a practical and simple way of helping victims access

A SECOND CHANCE One Sunshine Coast woman is determined to raise money for the foundation that saved her life. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.
J
ayne Brown is putting her second chance at life to good use, achieving personal goals and making a difference to the foundation that helped her. And she’s doing it all with a team she likes to call ‘Charlie’s Lap Ladies’. In August 2020 Ms Brown underwent lifesaving surgery to remove two brain tumours that for 10 years she was told were inoperable. She has also suffered from heart problems
after a cardiac arrest when she was 50. Well-known neurosurgeon Professor Charlie Teo stepped in to remove the tumours and Ms Brown now enjoys a full life running her lip gloss business Noosa Glow Australia and spending time with her grandchildren – not to mention tackling a 10-kilometre swim challenge. May is brain cancer awareness month and as part of that, Ms Brown and four of her friends are swimming to raise money for the Charlie Teo Foundation
after she was selected to be a warrior for brain cancer. “I could choose anything at all that would challenge me; it didn’t have to be sport, it could be anything at all,” the 62-year-old from Mooloolah Valley says. “I chose swimming because I have never been able to swim. The year before my brain surgery I had two heart procedures and before that I was always running out of puff and I could never swim a whole lap. “Now that that’s all done and out of the way I thought I would choose swimming.” Now every Wednesday morning she swims at Caloundra’s aquatic centre with the group of ladies who are part of her fundraising team Charlie’s Lap Ladies. “We decided that for the month of May we would do 10 kilometres each, so 50 kilometres as a team,” Ms Brown says. “We have to do 22 laps of the 50-metre pool each. “When we started I couldn’t even swim one lap and now I’m up to 30 laps for the challenge – I’m so proud of myself.
“We came up with the name Charlie’s Lap Ladies, and I have heard from Charlie and he said he does love the name and he does love the challenge. “We are just trying to make it fun and raise some money.” Passionate about giving back to the foundation that gave her a future, Ms Brown also donates a part of profits from the sale of her Noosa Glow products to the Charlie Teo Foundation. “It’s extremely important to me because Charlie gave me my future back,” she says. “I had no help for 10 years and I was told it was inoperable, so I owe him everything. “I’ve got three beautiful daughters and seven grandchildren and I’ve got a great life.” Requiring yearly MRI scans to monitor her brain, Ms Brown says her most recent one “looked really great”. “No tumour has grown back yet. n award-winning program is continuing to change the lives of Sunshine Coast kids living with challenges through the fun of rugby league. Falcons Footy Kidz – Rugby League for Children of Different Abilities is for boys and girls with autism, Asperger’s, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, emotional, social, neurological and/or physical disabilities. The children train and play modified rugby league and develop social and motor skills with the help of qualified coaches, in a safe and supportive environment at Sunshine Coast Stadium. The program was essentially formed by the Sunshine Coast Falcons in 2014 and it has the support of Sunshine Coast Council and sponsors. Falcons CEO Chris Flannery says the initiative provides the kids and their families with great opportunities. “It’s really for kids who can’t play in a mainstream sports team,” he says. “We found there were a lot of kids
A Coast footy program is providing great opportunities for kids who wanted to play sport but couldn’t play on Saturday mornings with other kids. “So, we decided to start the program … and we found the kids enjoyed it.
“It’s also provided the parents with a chance to network with others who are in a similar position to them with kids with different abilities.” The youngsters, aged five to 16, enjoy
one-hour sessions before Falcons’ home games during the football season. They are split into groups, depending on their abilities, and take part in non-contact skills drills and games focused on rugby league. They are supported by Falcons’ players, coaches and staff, while former Brisbane Broncos and Queensland State of Origin star Matt Gillett is the program’s ambassador. The Falcons will play their next home game at Sunshine Coast Stadium against the Brisbane Tigers for round eight of the Hostplus Cup on May 15. To coincide with the home game, the club is having a Falcons membership drive at the stadium between midday and 2.30pm. Head to the Falcons marquee. CALLING ALL ANIMAL LOVERS: THESE SUPERSTARS NEED A NEW HOME Ten years ago, thanks to the Mix FM’s Give Me 5 for Kids campaign of 2011, Wishlist created the Children’s Ward rooftop playground at Nambour Hospital. Previously unused space was transformed into an oasis of play and imagination, an escape for families enduring long hours in the Children’s Ward. The centrepiece was a train that wove its way past the playground superstars, our beloved safari animals – a mumma gorilla, giraffe, rhino and zebra and their babies. There’s also a cute baby elephant. The animals sat proudly on that rooftop for six years, doing what they’d been trained to do in lifting the spirits of bored, sick children and allowing mum or dad a cup of tea in the sun. In 2017 the Children’s Ward moved to SCUH, the Dementia Unit took its place, and the animals were confined to storage while we worked to relocate them to another hospital campus. After one final failed attempt to release them into the wilds of the internal garden at SCUH we’ve sadly
conceded that they may have to consider a career move. The animals have a lot more life left in them yet and I’m sure that there’s a school, childcare centre or resort out there somewhere that will provide them with a good home and allow them to see out their days with a smile on their faces. We will never know the amount of precious distraction and joy these animals have brought families at the hospital. They were born from the love and generosity of a proactive community and they have a lot more love to give. During the month of April, The Compass Institute ran its first ever autism awareness campaign to raise awareness of autism spectrum disorders, drive acceptance and understanding, and raise funds. Compass development coordinator Kelly Hammond says more than $77,000 has been raised thanks to the generosity of the community. “In April we hosted over 160 local businessmen and women at our Compass Institute race night, welcomed business leaders wanting to create inclusion in their workplaces at our corporate workshop, raised $37,800 with our on-air appeal with Todd and Sami and celebrated in style with our Compass trainees, families, staff and friends at the Sunshine Coast’s first ever silent disco,” she says. “All the above was a pathway to support both our Compass Assistance Dogs and The Compass Institute learning and development campuses and we are delighted to announce that we have raised in total $77,295.51.” Ms Hammond says this includes more than $11,000 cash for the Compass Assistance Dogs, the full sponsorship of a new assistance dog at $30,000, and $37,800 in cash for the learning and development campuses. “Every dollar raised is a testament to the community we live in and you – our supporters, who continue to show up and give time and again,” she says.

The unique live public art program is back after a brief hiatus, resuming Thursday 13 May. Jack is Keeper Number 7 and he’ll be on deck Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 6am to 6pm until 3 June. The Keepers work in a temporary role as observers, collectors, makers and storytellers within the community. There will be 10 Keepers, all Coolum-based artists and creatives representing a diverse range of practices. A live public art project is one where the

outcome or the result is not determined at the beginning of the process; rather it is informed by the people and place as it unfolds. As each Keeper takes the baton, residents and visitors are encouraged to be part of the process and engage with the project. Jack invites the Coolum community to connect with their neighbourhood through anonymous mail. He’s looking forward to being a messenger and inviting everyone to get involved. The next three Keepers are yet to be announced but will complete their training

This has been a long journey as Council first endorsed our UNESCO Biosphere nomination on behalf of the community in 2019, so I’m thrilled our nomination has made it to the final leg of the process. A biosphere is a special place – an international site of excellence. It is a place where responsible development and people living sustainably sit alongside active conservation. Just like our region. A biosphere credential will help us protect and enhance our region, communities, the economy and natural assets. This is about celebrating people and nature. It will support our region in creating a legacy for future generations, caring for our natural environment and leveraging economic opportunities to grow local businesses. The UNESCO Biosphere nomination has been informed by our community and I thank the Sunshine Coast for your input and support. he smell of freshly baked scones and brewed coffee will soon fill halls across the Sunshine Coast as a muchloved event makes its return for 2022. Sunshine Coast Foodie Martin Duncan believes everyone has a connection to scones and has always used the popular treat to connect people. When he owned dessert cafes in Brisbane, he would host monthly catch-ups with local traders, eventually
creating Sconetime to help reduce the feeling of social isolation for the elderly in the community. He says the events are a wonderful opportunity for Sunshine Coast seniors, along with their carers, companions and family to connect. “We are very excited to bring Sconetime back,” Mr Duncan says. “It’s really important to reconnect our community. “I first had the idea of Sconetime after watching a video about a 96-year-
young woman who combatted loneliness and disconnect by regularly attending a morning tea. “Sconetime creates meaningful community connections where seniors in our community come together with family and business owners over fresh hot scones loaded with homemade jam and loads of freshly whipped cream.” Sconetime Caloundra is happening on May 25 from 10 am at the CWA Hall at 17 Kalinga Street. CASH PAID FOR GOLD
Prominent local health-care provider Bloomhill Cancer Care is set to bounce back from a tough start to the year thanks to a much-needed $426,000 cash injection. The federal funding arrangement will extend the charity’s funding support for two more years after it was due to lapse in June. Bloomhill Cancer Care CEO Christopher John says the charity has had a long-term plan to achieve sustainability through redevelopment. “Without this extended funding to allow us to achieve this goal, we would have had to revert to deeper cuts to resources in re-thinking how much we could continue to deliver and if we could continue to meet the demand for our services.” By offsetting operational costs, the funding will help the charity forge ahead with plans to redevelop the property and expand its therapy rooms from five to 14. Alongside a variety of efficiency measures, Bloomhill will then open its services to the wider community at market rates to generate additional income and secure ongoing financial sustainability.

WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa. “We hope to continue catering for more and more activities, especially activities for our more mature gentleman who haven’t done a lot in a workshop before.” Mr Anderson says the Shed has been reaching out to organisations, including Currimundi Special School, to find out about opportunities to give back to the community. “We make toys for the students that help with learning and development,” he says. “That’s what we are all about – giving back to the community.” The Caloundra Men’s Shed is open to males of all ages, providing they are safe to be in a workshop environment. The Caloundra Men’s Shed has experienced “exponential growth” since opening the doors to its new facility almost 12 months ago. The purpose-built shed on Grigor Street at Moffat Beach offers a place where men in the community can participate in a range of activities to boost physical and mental health. Its oldest member is 91. Caloundra Men’s Shed secretary Ron Anderson says since having the new space, the organisation has increased membership numbers and has been able to offer more activities. “Our membership has grown exponentially. We were dropping down to less than 30 at one stage but we are now up above 80 members at the new location,” Mr Anderson says.
Alley-oops and slam dunks soon won’t be sharing the combined basketball and tennis court at the Bellvista Meeting Place in Caloundra, thanks to strong community support for basketballers to have their own area to play. Last September, Sunshine Coast Council asked the Bellvista community to share their thoughts on a proposed relocation of the basketball court. “Due to the popularity at the current facilities, council received several requests to relocate the basketball court to its own area,
rather than be combined with the tennis court,” division one councillor Rick Baberowski says. “Almost 90 per cent of respondents supported relocating the basketball court – so on that note, work on the new basketball court at Canavan Gracie Park will start in early May.” He says the four-square basketball court will include a hopscotch area and be moved to a new location opposite the AFL field. “And, in great news for cricketers, the concrete cricket pitch will also be replaced as it’s coming to the end of its usable life.”
FLINDERS SCHOOL PRINCIPAL RECEIVES RUGBY HONOUR Matthew Flinders Anglican College principal Stuart Meade is being honoured as a life member of the Australian Schools Rugby Union (ASRU). Unaware of his recognition, Mr Meade was surprised with this new title from ASRU president Kevin Culliver during a school assembly last month. Mr Meade’s contribution to the ASRU spans 34 years from 1987 when he coached the first four (1st XV) team of Cranbrook School in Sydney, to 2021 when he retired as vice president. “This has been an incredible journey of more
than three decades of selfless dedication to the development of our youth through rugby union; a volunteer career of which we are indebted to him,” Mr Culliver says. “Mr Meade has proven beyond question he is worthy of such an honour.” The volunteer organisation has grown over more than 50 years and is run by members of the teaching profession and supporters who conduct events, representative teams and international tours. A large majority of Wallabies and Super Rugby players are products of the ASRU program.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell says drivers along Landsborough Maleny Road are often having to swerve between lanes to avoid several wide patches of deteriorated bitumen. He says the north coast region alone has a deferred maintenance backlog of $875 million. “In the Glass House electorate, that means less money for maintenance on Maleny Kenilworth Road from Maleny to Witta and at Cambroon, Landsborough Maleny Road on the ‘climb’ and upgrades to Steve Irwin Way,” Mr Powell says. “Every day my office receives calls from disgruntled road users wondering why these key connections are crumbling to pieces.” Recently, shadow transport minister Steve Minnikin visited the region to assess damage. “Locals are rightly demanding the worst areas should have been patched by now, particularly given the road surface started sliding down the hill seven months ago,” Mr Minnikin says. “Sure, there might need to be a more long-lasting resurfacing task required, but the road simply isn’t safe in the meantime.”

KEEP IT SIMPLE
THE RIGHT ADVICE
Politicians often fumble their words, but then so do the rest of us, writes Jane Stephens. So perhaps it’s time for some plain speaking.
After hearing Keith Urban on The Voice the other night, Ashley Robinson reminisces about his own experiences of the musician.
W
hen Prime Minister Scott Morrison called the federal election, he said people were tired of politics. If we were tired at the start, fatigue is surely bone-deep now. Adding irritation to exhaustion is the propensity of hopefuls to hash their words, speak in riddles or allow verbal diarrhoea to drip freely from their lips. All politicians walk a fine line between effective messaging and emitting incomprehensible rubbish. Even the most eloquent and educated of prime ministers in the past have committed crimes against language. We had sweary Kevin Rudd’s ‘detailed programmic specificity’ and Julia Gillard’s mispronunciation of ‘hyperbole’. On the conservative side, we have had Tony Abbott describing white settlement in Australia as British ‘foreign investment’ and living in remote areas as a ‘lifestyle choice’ and Morrison accidentally telling last year’s COP26 there was global momentum to tackle ‘China’ instead of ‘climate change’. Perhaps we judge too quickly, particularly because we all mis-speak and fluff our words sometimes. But forgiving brain fades and mis-speech doesn’t mean
we shouldn’t limit some of the padding around our core messaging. I reckon the top of the list for straightening out our communications is politicians’ favourite linguistic limbo tool: euphemisms. This evasiveness is what Monash University linguistics professor Kate Burridge calls deodorant language: “the sort of language that disguises a stinking reality”. At the top of my list is the euphemistic smorgasbord we reach for when someone dies. We say they have passed on or away. They are dead and no amount of verbal linguistics will change that. Dead is not a swear word. Disappointingly, journalists – who are taught to avoid euphemisms in their training – are also using it liberally in news reports now. Another euphemism collection that is trending is employed to avoid saying fat: we say well covered, heavyset and corpulent. Short is being ‘vertically challenged’. Stinking is emitting an ‘unpleasant aroma’. In the noise of the digital age where messages ping and fire at the speed of bytes, a bit of plain speaking is refreshing. It helps with the clarity of a person’s message – and is not just for election candidates.

n my house there is a monopoly on the TV in the living room – anything that old mate wants to watch. I get the one in the lounge but because her headphones are busted and she won’t buy a new pair until The Good Guys has them on special I hear every word coming out of ‘her’ TV. Currently it’s The Voice that echoes through the house. I am not allowed to vacuum, or use the blower unless there is an ad on. Awesome. The other night while I was trying to watch a recorded Seinfeld episode for the 1000th time, I heard one of the judges on The Voice giving a young bloke some advice. He was saying, “Just play any gig you can to gain experience about how any audience reacts.” That judge was Keith Urban, a superstar from just down the road at Caboolture. Originally a Kiwi, he moved to Cabo when he was two. It reminded me of the old Mooloolaba Hotel days where from 1989 to 1997 I was the manager and in charge of entertainment. Now the band-booking part of the job was risky – guaranteeing a fee or letting the band do a door deal, which basically meant they split
the costs and profits. The latter was always my preference but agents always tried the other way as there was no risk for them if they got a fee. So it was either 1989 or 1990 and I get a call from some gibbering agent who says he has this hot young talent from Caboolture who is the next big thing, cross between country and rock all for just $2000 but the joint will be full so don’t worry. Must have caught me at a weak moment so I agreed to book Keith Urban from Caboolture, whoever the hell he is. As I listened to him give advice the other night it certainly rang true as back at Mooloolaba that Sunday night 75 people turned up at 10 bucks a head and most were not quite sure whether it was rock or country, and I was sure we lost $1250 of my boss’s money and I never wanted to see the kid from Caboolture again. But he figured out what to play and the punters figured out what they liked about him and the rest is history. He is married to a movie star, worth tens of millions in his own right and I am still picking up glasses in a bar and married to someone that is waiting for headphones to come on special. The contestants are in good hands.

A HOME TO LOVE Our favourite home designs and style trends have been revealed as Australians reimagine the kind of home they want to live in.

ew data from a leading developer has unearthed ‘Coastal Hues’ as Queensland’s top trend for 2022, with more than 20,000 people researching the style. Coastal Hues – with its bright, open spaces, crisp white walls, warm timber flooring, natural jute, vibrant greenery and layers of organic linen – was the most popular search among people who used Stockland’s Dreamcatcher tool. Developer Stockland launched Dreamcatcher in late 2020, during the height of the pandemic. The tool helps users navigate Australian home design trends and immerse themselves in 3D virtual home tours and guided videos so they can conceptualise their personal design style. With the help of builders and stylists, users can also design their custom style board, be assigned their style DNA profile and uncover their unique interior design style. Stockland’s co-head of design, Sophie Pickett-Heaps, says homeowners have been investing more time and thought into their home environment than ever before. She says 71 per cent of Australians are rethinking what kind of home they wish to live in while 26 per cent are thinking about renovating. “What we are seeing from this tool is the strong desire for a more coastal style of living, with its light and airy feel, earth tones and warm timber floors, reminiscent of long lazy afternoons by the beach. “This has come out as the key favourite, truly epitomising the Australian lifestyle.”

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY PURCHASES UP TO $15,000 TO BE APPROVED AUTOMATICALLY Recent changes to the NDIS make it easier to purchase assistive technology (AT) with your NDIS funds, providing you meet the necessary requirements. The upper limit for automatic approval of assistive technology purchases has increased from $5000 to $15,000. Providing you have the relevant evidence, the NDIS will automatically approve funding for AT items up to $15,000. No quote is required. Quotes are no longer needed to purchase AT items valued at less than $15,000. The NDIS still needs some evidence to ensure you get the right AT. R
ising interest rates are unlikely to curtail house prices on the Sunshine Coast, which is facing another decade of growth unlike anywhere in the nation, says a market intelligence specialist. Mal Cayley says strong demand to live on the Coast and a severe undersupply of housing remain the key factors driving up prices. Mr Cayley heads Directive Collective, a team of property experts across sales, holiday letting, rentals, investment and first-home buying, and undertakes research on the Coast market. While the recent 0.25 per cent rise will mean some rethinking of household budgets, Mr Cayley says most mortgage holders will be able to afford it, as well as subsequent rises. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) raised the cash rate from a record low 0.1 per cent to 0.35 per cent this month. Analysts are predicting the RBA is likely to raise the rate a number of times over the coming year. But Mr Cayley says even several jumps will not significantly impact the Coast’s housing market, which has experienced soaring prices during the pandemic.
“It is unlikely we will see house prices fall anytime soon; it will actually be quite the opposite,” he says. “The Sunshine Coast property market is likely to see strong house price growth for some time, but not necessarily as aggressive as it has been during the pandemic. “Our view is that the Sunshine Coast economy has the greatest prospects for per capita growth than any of the 20 largest cities and towns in the country over the next five to 10 years.” Mr Cayley says the underlying factors fuelling the local market – the surging population and lack of housing – have
not changed. He says the interest rate would have to leap by two per cent (200 basis points) to have any impact on the property market, but even then house prices are unlikely to drop. “Do we see interest rate rises causing a fall in property prices on the Sunshine Coast? No, we don’t. We may see medians fall, but that does not mean that actual values have fallen. “The reality is, it is unlikely that interest rate rises are going to have any material impact on house prices in the short term, especially on the Sunshine Coast.” Mr Cayley says the rate rise, which

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water
Imagine this. I witnessed quite a strange angry surfer on the weekend. He had his arms folded tight and, by the look on his face, it was like someone had wiped dog poo under his nose. Even stranger was that there was hardly anyone surfing, so there were plenty of waves. Then I came across a surfer who had been forced to wear a tracking bracelet so the police could keep a eye on him. He seemed quite happy to be free. Anyway, waves will be around, so enjoy – and smile!
