From the editor She has been a Sunshine Coast icon for as long as most of us can remember, but there is more to the Lisa Curry story than her incredible sporting achievements and high profile celebrity status that followed – much more. With the highs have come some devastating blows for the former Olympic athlete, including the tragic and untimely death of her first-born child, daughter Jaimi in 2020, then her mother Pat less than two years later. A mother of three, and doting grandmother of two boys, with another on the way any day, Lisa chats candidly with Leigh Robshaw about the highs and lows and shares some of the biggest lessons she has learnt along the way, as well as the inspiration behind the release of her new book, titled Lisa: A memoir – 60 years of life, love & loss. Lisa’s story is particularly
poingnant with Mother’s Day just around the corner – the first without her mum. It’s a beautiful and inspiring read. As a mother of three myself, Mother’s Day for me is always a reminder of how lucky I am to have such wonderful female role models and supporters in my life, and how blessed I am to be a mum. Residential facility brings The Wandi Nerida centre at Mooloolah is the only one of its kind in Australia and is doing groundbreaking work in the treatment of eating disorders. WORDS: Shirley Sinclair.
A
10-hectare semi-rural sanctuary on the Sunshine Coast is offering hope and changing the lives of some of the estimated one million Australians who have eating disorders. Mooloolah’s Wandi Nerida centre – Australia’s first and only residential eating disorder facility – has helped 63 residential participants since opening on June 8 last year. The important work of the dedicated staff was recognised in the latest federal budget, with a further $1.3 million package for patient treatment. Wandi Nerida executive director Jodie Ashworth says an average 60-day stay at the 13-bed facility, owned and operated by the Butterfly Foundation, costs about $75,000 for each participant. The government funding, along with the generous support of philanthropic donors, will allow the facility and staff to continue to help all those needing care, regardless of their economic status. The unique programs and support offered at the Old Gympie Road property – from equine therapy to art and

hope The Wandi Nerida Centre, Mooloolaba permaculture – are helping current participants including bubbly Tyler-May, 25, from Sydney. Tyler-May is seven weeks into her initial 60-day program and has already extended her stay for a further 30 days. For the first time ever, she is positive about her recovery and excitedly making plans for the future. “I’ve done a lot of admissions in Sydney. Here the program allows for staff to be more consistent and well-rounded in their care,” she says. “The support is phenomenal.” Tyler-May says that instead of concentrating solely on participants’ weight and reaching a point where they could be sent home, the Wandi Nerida programs teach life skills such as cooking and shopping. The program also offers specialised one-to-one outings with dietitians and psychologists. Recovery navigators and over a third of the staff with lived experiences of eating disorders allow participants to see living success stories. “To be able to see they’ve come through their eating disorder is an
amazing experience to have around us,” Tyler-May says. “It really gives you hope. It feels like your team is working with you, not against you. “My dad came to see me from Sydney and he said he was shocked at the person I am now and the person that’s come back out that he hasn’t seen in years. “It’s the first time I’ve ever committed to long-term treatment.
“To be able to see they’ve come through their eating disorders is an amazing experience” “I don’t feel like I’m in a hospital or treatment facility. “Here I have a team that believes in me and that I can recover for the first time in my life.” Tyler-May says she had suffered anorexia nervosa since about 2017 when

she was 19. Her condition has since been diagnosed as “severe and enduring”. “With severe and enduring, they (medical practitioners) think you are going to be in and out of hospital the rest of your life. They don’t think you can maintain yourself in the community,” she says. But the Bachelor of Communications graduate is looking forward to a time when she can return to the Sunshine Coast to use her degree and lived experiences and possibly act as a recovery navigator for other Wandi Nerida participants. Thirty-two-year-old mum Paula, from the Gold Coast, is learning how to love herself, regardless of her size and weight. The mum of a 12-year-old daughter is also at the seven-week mark of the program, which her husband suggested she try after he stumbled upon an article on the treatment facility. Paula has had her eating disorder “for as long as I can remember”. Since the age of 14, she has been on see-sawing cycles of bingeing and restricting eating, with a tendency to overexercise as well. “It’s just pushed down our throats all the time that you need to look a certain way,” Paula says. “I never saw anything wrong with restricting my calories extensively or fasting for long periods of time because it’s very widely accepted in society.” As a mum, the live-in facility has given her the time away from home she needed to allow herself to recover, and she has signed up for the 30-day extension. “It feels like they actually really care about you and believe you can recover.” If you or someone you know is struggling, called Lifeline on 13 11 14. wo young boys can be tough to keep up with, even for a former Olympian. Lisa Curry describes her two grandsons Flynn and Taj as very active kids who love to run around on her hinterland farm with the dogs, chooks, ducks and cows. And with daughter Morgan Gruell’s third baby due this month, she says she needs to stay in shape if she’s going to keep up with all three. “I’m hoping the baby will come on my birthday,” Lisa confides. “It’s just going to be beautiful to have a little baby around. I always wanted to get married early and have children young, so I could be a young grandmother.” Lisa, who turns 60 on May 15, plans to spend Mother’s Day with her daughter and the boys on a day that will no doubt be a difficult one. She will mind the boys while Morgan sells her pregnancy activewear at the Coolum markets, then they’ll go somewhere local for lunch. Speaking with My Weekly Preview in the lead-up to the launch of her compelling new memoir, tears flow readily as Lisa explains this Mother’s Day will be her first without her beloved mum Pat and her second without her beautiful daughter Jaimi Kenny. Lisa’s mother passed away in March, less than two years after the tragic death of her 33-year-old daughter in September 2020. It’s a hell of a lot of heartbreak to bear, even for someone with the strength and fortitude Lisa displayed over more than two decades as a champion swimmer. In what is a raw and vulnerable account, she opens up about the highs and lows of her life in the new book, titled Lisa: A memoir – 60 years of life, love & loss. She has dedicated it to her

mum, and writes: “Time to rest now, Mum. Have a nice, long sleep. Look after my baby girl.” It was a packed house at The Events Centre, Caloundra this week for a Sunshine Coast Libraries author event, which featured Matt Collins in conversation with Lisa. There’s definitely a lot of buzz around the book and while it’s a major milestone for the entrepreneur, it’s somewhat of a bittersweet achievement. “I have mixed feelings about the book at the moment, because I have to talk about it,” Lisa says. “I was going to write it when I was 50 and I had half the manuscript done, but I just never got it finished. “Then 60 was coming around, but I really didn’t feel like doing it. It was hard on a lot of levels, especially the chapters at the end.” The chapters she’s referring to reveal al the heartbreaking loss of her daughter and the events that led up to it, which she finds difficult to discuss without breaking down. But she is also candid about another trauma she endured. On the surface, Lisa’s childhood growing up in the suburbs of Brisbane seemed idyllic. Her father Roy was a successful businessman and her mother was a dedicated homemaker who drove her to endless training sessions at the pool after she was spotted by legendary coach Harry Gallagher at Hibiscus Gardens pool complex in Upper Mount Gravatt in 1972. Best known for coaching Dawn Fraser to three Olympic gold medals, it was a thrill for a young Lisa when she was invited to join Harry’s squad at the age of 10. But behind closed doors, all was not well. Over a number of years, Lisa and her siblings, Scott and Melanie, witnessed their father Roy abusing their mother. He left her bruised and with black eyes, which she would explain away as clumsiness if anyone asked at the pool. But those were different days, when people believed it was rude to pry and preferred to mind their

She doesn’t shy away from revealing the whole story in her book, beginning with the development of Jaimi’s eating disorder in her early teens, to her ongoing battle with alcoholism and the personal traumas that were simply too much for the young woman to live with. In the hope of helping others experiencing a similar ordeal, she shares the struggles she and Grant endured during years of medical treatment for their daughter and the many ways they desperately tried to save her. She says that while she may look “strong, courageous and happy” on the surface, she’s not. She’s “hurt, sad, broken”. She feels changed forever; a part of her having died with her daughter. But in true Lisa Curry style, she continues to forge ahead with husband Mark Tabone by her side and her loving children and grandchildren around her. “Every single person who walks past is struggling in some way,” she says. “Some get through it, some are struggling through it and some don’t get through it. But when you feel support from other people because of what’s happened to you in your life, whether you’re winning a gold medal or losing someone, you realise you’re not alone.”

Ambulance station celebration The Sunshine Coast community recently gathered to commemorate 100 years of the Nambour Ambulance Station with a special twilight centenary event. The night was also a chance to recognise the work of the Local Ambulance Committee, which helps fundraise for the station. Motorists are set to get a smoother run on a well-used section of the Bruce Highway on the Sunshine Coast. The state government is ramping up investment in the highway, with more than $7 million of works to resurface 12 kilometres of road between Ninderry and Cooroy. “This will make this section of the highway safer, once works are complete,” Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton says. “We know how vital the Bruce Highway is to the wider network and I’m sure the 27,000 motorists who travel this section each day will appreciate the result.” The resurfacing is expected to take about four months, weather and construction conditions permitting.

SHORING UP THE SHORELINE Work is now underway on stage two of the Maroochy Groyne Field Renewal project to help shield the Cotton Tree foreshore from the current and future impacts of coastal erosion. After stage one was completed in 2020, this second stage will see approximately 2000 sand-filled geotextile bags laid in formation to make up the renewed groynes, which interrupt wave action, capture sand and provide an erosion buffer to protect the Cotton Tree coastline and adjacent holiday park. Having housed four geotextile groynes for almost 20 years, the Cotton Tree coastline was identified for renewal in 2017 as part of Sunshine Coast Council’s Shoreline Erosion Management Plan. These bags will use sand sourced directly from the Cotton Tree site, and the sand from previous bags will be used to replenish the beach.

Sunshine Coast police’s month-long Operation Regain targeted dangerous driving behaviours that lead to road trauma. The operation detected 343 offences, including 273 speeding offences, 21 people failing to wear a seat belt and 11 drivers using a mobile phone. Acting Superintendent Doug McDonald says 30 drivers were issued infringements for failing to stop at stop signs or red lights. “We are noticing a trend starting to emerge in our district where failing to stop at signs or red lights are causing crashes,” he says. During the operation, 53 drink drivers were detected from more than 16,500 tests, as well as 93 drug drivers from 436 tests. Since January 1, 10 lives have sadly been lost on Sunshine Coast roads with almost 300 people suffering an injury as a result of a crash.
USC IS A WINNER The University of the Sunshine Coast has topped Queensland in the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking for 2022, and in one category secured a top-five global position. USC placed fifth among 634 universities worldwide for Clean Water and Sanitation in the rankings that assess universities for proven successes in addressing the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. What’s Actually Inside the Mattress You’re Thinking About Buying The core of most mattresses is made from one of two types of springs. The first type uses lengths of wire formed into hourglass shapes, connected by rows of spiral (helical) wire and held together by a wire hoop at the top and bottom. These are often called Bonnell Springs. But no matter what name mattress stores use, this traditional style of wire spring is essentially the same. In fact, most are made by one company and shipped in compressed form to mattress companies all around the world. The second type of spring is called a Pocket Spring. This is where each spring is wrapped in a thin layer of fabric and moves independently to minimize partner disturbance. Pocket Spring mattresses often come with heavier springs in the middle of the bed to give extra support for your hips (3 zone). Don’t be fooled by sales people who tell you 5 or 7 zones are better. This is just a gimmick to get you to pay more for a mattress. Likewise, don’t be fooled by people who tell you more springs are better. The more springs a mattress has, the smaller and thinner those springs have to be (and potentially weaker). But I suppose when someone is trying to sell you a $6,000 mattress, 4,000 springs sounds better than 1,000 even if it’s not true. Pocket Spring mattresses tend to cost a little more than Bonnell Spring Mattresses but offer a genuine advantage in terms of less partner disturbance.
What About Edge Support In order to maintain support right to the edges, an extra piece of wire can be connected to the top and bottom hoops of a Bonnell Spring mattress and a strong foam box can be added to a Pocket Spring Mattress. Edge supports add genuine benefit because they allow you to sleep or sit right on the edge of the bed without the side collapsing. Edge supports should add around $100 to the price of a Bonnell Spring mattress and around $200 to the price of a Pocket Spring mattress depending if the support goes all the way around or if it is just added to the sides.
What’s on Top Of The Springs? Most mattresses have a layer of felt directly on top of the springs. But many manufacturers skimp by using very thin felt or only putting felt on one side of the springs. We use

heavy grade felt that provides a solid base for comfort layers. On top of the felt you’ll find a variety of comfort layers - usually a combination of foam or latex and sometimes other natural materials like wool. This is by far the most expensive part of a mattress and the reason luxury mattresses cost more. But don’t be fooled. No matter what type of foam or latex (or what fancy name a manufacturer gives their comfort layers), it should never add thousands to the price of a mattress.
The Truth About Different Foams Listen carefully because this is one of the most important things you need to know when choosing a mattress. The type of foam used in a mattress will not only affect its feel, it will significantly affect the longevity of the mattress. Foams are measured in two ways. Firstly there is the feel- hard or soft. Then there is the density - high or low. The feel is what makes one mattress appear plush and another firm. The density is what makes one foam last longer than another. You can get a soft mattress in low or high density. Density does not affect the feel. But it will make a big difference to how long your mattress will last. Density is what costs the money. So before you buy a mattress, be sure to ask about the density of the foams inside. The first layer (on top of the felt) is usually the lowest density (2025kg/m2 is usually fine for this layer). But many manufacturers continue to use low density (20kg/m2 or lower) for the top comfort layer. While you won’t notice this when you first feel your new mattress, it will become obvious as the foam breaks down and you end up sleeping in a hollow (sometimes as quickly as just a few months).
What About Memory and Gel Foams? Memory foam is a term used to describe foams that have a slow ‘bounce’. In other words, once depressed, they take a few seconds to regain their original shape. Gel foam is a term used to describe foam that is infused with a special gel substance. Both memory and gel foams feel similar to touch. But because some people complain memory foams are hot to sleep on (due to the fact you tend to sink into the foam more), the addition of gel particles encourages air flow and a cooler sleeping surface. Although used as a marketing gimmick by many manufacturers, we do see some benefit in using gel infused memory foam if you tend to feel hot when you sleep.
What About Latex? Unlike memory foam that has a slow ‘bounce’ latex returns to its original shape very quickly. This doesn’t mean latex feels hard to sleep on. Quite the contrary, latex has quite a plush feel. But unlike memory foam which causes you to sink into the bed, latex supports you on the surface.
What’s About Pillow Top? The term pillow top refers to the extra comfort layers usually only on one side of the mattress. This provides an extra soft sleeping surface for those who like a plush feel. Once again, the most important thing is what is inside the pillow top - namely, the density of foam. A low density foam may feel luxurious at first, but as it breaks down you may feel like you are sleeping in a hollow.

What About The Plush Top? Some people like the look and feel of the ‘cloud-like’ comfort layers incorporated into the quilting of some mattresses. The problem is, this layer usually flattens quickly. Some salespeople say, “Your mattress will settle and mould to your body shape over time.” The truth is, the fluffy quilting is simply getting flat. We advise against plush quilting because if you like the plush feel, you will soon be disappointed as the quilting flattens. If you do like a particularly soft surface layer, we recommend inserting a thin layer of high density memory foam in the quilting.
What About Mattresses That Cost $3000, $5000 and Even $10,000? As you now know, the internal components of most mattresses are pretty much the same. And the most important part is the comfort layers (i.e. the density\quality of the foam). But no matter what fancy names are given to a mattress or it’s components -including terms relating to the type or number or springs - if you’re paying $6,000 for a mattress, we think you are being ripped off.

Medicinal Cannabis Symposium will bring international experts to the Sunshine Coast.
A
symposium born out of the tragic death of a 24-year-old cancer patient is coming to the Sunshine Coast at a pivotal time in the medical industry. The region will play host to the 2022 Australian Medicinal Cannabis Symposium this month, just as the Therapeutic Goods Administration begins trialling over-thecounter medicinal cannabis treatments. Medicinal cannabis was legalised in Australia in 2016, thanks to Lucy Haslam and her late son, Dan. The drive for change began after Dan was given a terminal stage four bowel cancer diagnosis. Medicinal cannabis was the only way to alleviate the serious symptoms and debilitating side effects of his chemotherapy but there was one problem – it was illegal in Australia. With Mrs Haslam a retired registered nurse, the pair began campaigning to legalise pharmaceutical products. Mrs Haslam, who now lives in Flaxton, says after going public many other patients began to come forward and Australian support to change the law grew rapidly to around 97 per cent. Realising the interest and beginning

Medicinal cannabis is a medicine that comes from the cannabis sativa plant, commonly called marijuana. This plant is the same one used to make the recreational drug of the same name, which is illegal in Queensland and most states and territories. However, medicinal cannabis and the recreational drug should not be confused. Medicinal cannabis most often comes as a pill, oil or nasal spray and its use is very highly regulated in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. What is a cannabinoid? Research has found that the cannabis plant produces between 80 and 100 cannabinoids. The two main cannabinoids that have therapeutic benefits are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). The main difference between the two cannabinoids is that THC has strong psychoactive effects, meaning it makes a person ‘high’, whereas CBD is thought to have an anti-psychoactive effect that controls or moderates the ‘high’ caused by the THC. RAMSAY HEALTH CARE TAKEOVER On April 20, Ramsay Health Care (RHC) confirmed it received a non-binding indicative takeover proposal from a consortium led by private equity giant KKR & Co. The $88 per share indicative offer values the hospital group’s equity at $20.1 billion, or $26.4 billion including debt. RHC is a private hospital operator with more than eight million admissions/patient visits to its facilities in more than 532 locations across Australia, France, the UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Malaysia and Hong Kong. The bidding consortium includes several Australian superannuation funds including HESTA, which is the industry fund for healthcare workers.
The consortium is also believed to include AustralianSuper and several offshore sovereign wealth funds, which are looking to take advantage of the attractive and growing healthcare space. The offer price of $88 a share rises to $91.60 when taking into account the $823 million in franking credits available to be distributed. This represents a 42 per cent premium to RHC’s closing share price of $64.39 before confirmation of the offer. The stock jumped 24 per cent after the announcement to $80, still short of the $88 a share cash proposal. A foreign bid for a public company would normally only require approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board. However, this takeover arguably deserves a wider review considering the private hospital sector is so reliant on government funding – a risk that would partially explain the gap to the proposed takeover price. Reactions have been mixed among existing institutional investors, even after considering the material upside the offer represents in the prior closing price. Many long-term investors believe it is opportunistic given RHC’s shares have been under pressure as it battled through COVID-19, which significantly affected its operations because of rolling
bans on elective surgery such as knee and hip replacements. The value of RHC’s hospital properties – if sold alone – would unlock a large amount of value for any acquirer, so it would not be surprising if other bidders choose to take a seat at the table. Its biggest shareholder, the Paul Ramsay Foundation, is supportive of the takeover talks. The foundation owns an 18.8 per cent stake, which under the $88 a share offer is valued at about $4 billion. The bid for RHC is a continuation of foreign private equity or alternative investors leading consortiums to acquire Australian businesses with high-quality assets and free cash flow generation. Earlier this year a Brookfield and AustralianSuper-led consortium completed the purchase of Sydney Airport and Ords Research believes many other high-quality companies undervalued by public markets could be on the radar for other patient capital allocators. Of particular interest are real estate investment trusts trading below their asset value such as Charter Hall Long WALE REIT (CLW) and Waypoint (WPR). Mr Fraser says he experienced refusals many years ago but in recent times he is finding businesses around the Sunshine Coast to be knowledgeable of a guide dog’s public access rights. Guide Dogs Queensland general manager Lee Buckingham says he is pleased with the reports from guide dog handlers on the Sunshine Coast. “We know that refusals can leave a lasting impact on a guide dog handler’s daily routine, and their confidence to be active in their community,” Mr Buckingham says. “We would like to thank the Sunshine Coast for setting the example of how to treat people with a guide dog.” In response to the survey results, Guide Dogs Australia is launching a national Rethink Refusal campaign aiming to educate businesses, industries and the community on complying with the Australian Disability Access Regulations.

RESTORING THE WRECK Pieces from the historic 129-year-old SS Dicky wreck are undergoing restoration to be preserved and placed on display, as part of stage two of the Dicky Beach Precinct Plan. “The wreck’s significance to the local area will continue to be shared in stage two works, through interpretive elements and ship pieces featured on a viewing deck, which has direct line of sight to the location of the SS Dicky beach grounding,” division two Councillor Terry Landsberg says. Restored pieces will be displayed in the Dicky Beach Surf Club, Landsborough Museum and at the precinct. A specialised team is working to stabilise pieces, including parts of the frame and hull still showing rivets. “The preparation process includes soaking the items in either a water and bi-carb mix, or water and citric acid solution to remove the salt and rust and inhibit corrosion,” council cultural heritage officer Angela Marczi says. “On some of the pieces we then remove the barnacles and rust using either a chisel, chipping hammer or blowtorch. The objects are then treated with either fish oil or a wax which helps them withstand the outdoor elements.”

Suncoast Spinners Wheelchair Sports Club member and coach James Hill has been named as part of the Australian team for the Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup in the United Kingdom in October. The 23-year-old able-bodied athlete has been playing wheelchair sports since 2014 after accompanying a friend to a social game. Hill plays wheelchair rugby league as well as playing and coaching wheelchair basketball and is one of five able-bodied athletes selected as part of the 13-man squad for The Wheelaroo team. “Having the opportunity to play wheelchair rugby league with the best in the world at top level competition is going to be a real challenge, and I’m really looking forward to it,” Mr Hill says. He also says a key part of the mission at the Sunshine Coast Spinners is inclusivity. “We have such a great club here on the Sunshine Coast where everyone of any ability is encouraged to come and play either wheelchair rugby or wheelchair basketball,” he says. COMMEMORATIVE CENOTAPH TO BE BUILT IN BLI BLI A 3.4-metre cenotaph will soon adorn Bli Bli’s Avenue of Honour to commemorate the service and sacrifices of Australian servicemen and women. District president of the Sunshine Coast and Regional District RSL Branch Ian Hall welcomes this new, permanent mark of respect. “This cenotaph will complement the Avenue of Honour here at Bli Bli in Parklakes and will ensure that the sacrifices of our veterans made in the service of their country are remembered by the Bli Bli community and the 17,000 ex-defence personnel now residing [on the Sunshine Coast],” Mr Hall says. “The new cenotaph will be the centre of celebrations for veterans, past members of the defence forces and
members of the Bli Bli community, including children, to conduct ceremonies on Anzac Day, Remembrance Day and other commemorative days. We are truly remembering them.” The Avenue of Honour includes 26 Moreton Bay fig trees and is being made possible thanks to a $109,680 federal grant. The first 14 trees represent significant conflicts where Australians have fought or provided support and the remaining 12 trees represent countries where Australian forces have been involved in peacekeeping missions. Sunshine Coast architect and sculptor Cam Crossley will design and build the contemporary cenotaph.

Walking football team claims national title Coolum Beach Walking Football club has been named the national over-60 champions at the recent Queensland University of Technology Cup. Held over the Anzac Day long weekend, the competition attracted teams from Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Newcastle and Ballina. The six-aside format included over-50s, over-60s and mixed social divisions. Walking football is a modified, no-contact, no-running version of associated football (soccer) for men and women over the age of 50. May is Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Prevention Month. This month is dedicated to raising awareness of DFV for the community to send a message to perpetrators that violence is not tolerated. The Queensland Police Service is committed to enhancing policing responses to support vulnerable people of our community. Sunshine Coast police have a dedicated Domestic and Family Violence and Vulnerable Persons Unit’ (VPU) that has a crucial role in prevention, disruption, response, and investigation of domestic violence (DV). This unit consists of highly trained police officers who specialise in supporting victims of DV. Our VPU is focused on early intervention of domestic violence. The team will review and evaluate every DV incident and decide whether the victim and children need further support through external agencies to ensure their safety. VPU will also evaluate the behaviours of the perpetrator, the frequency of DV incidents and the severity of the DV incident/s. If these incidents are seen as escalating and the victim and children are classified as high risk the VPU will refer the incident to the DFV section. The high-risk perpetrators are a portfolio of the DFV unit.
This team focuses on victims and children who are at high risk of harm and lethality by the perpetrator. The DFV identify and coordinate the high risk DFV referrals into the multi-agency network to ensure there is a safety plan to reduce any further harm to the victim and children. The VPU are dedicated in prevention and disruption of the perpetrator. The perpetrator can be referred to external agencies to participate in specialised programs addressing their behaviour and way of thinking. Change can be challenging but it is very attainable. H
onour the past but welcome the future. So said American poet EE Cummings. Across time and space, these sage words find application, and never more sharply than in this era of great development on the Sunshine Coast. Amid the building and reconfiguring required to accommodate our burgeoning population and prettify in the lead-up to the Olympics, resistance is high among the possessive and sentimental. Our part of the world is changing, and change does not come easily, particularly at uncertain times such as these. A suggestion that the Loo with a View might soon be placed in our past as part of the Mooloolaba foreshore rejuvenation has caused ripples, although I have to wonder why. Perhaps it is that we have honed our collective resistance to change on the Sunshine Coast to a sharp point, and we lunge out defensively – almost like a reflex – no matter what is suggested. Let’s get honest and real about this structure. It is not even very old. Built in 1997, only the young can say it is part of their growing up on the Coast. It is not particularly picturesque. Its
location is sublime, of course, but it bakes in summer and is open to the sea-borne elements. The seating and open spaces are not plentiful or particularly useful. But even as a toilet block, it does not really cut the mustard. It is pretty grotty in a way that a bit of lick and polish won’t fix. The toilets, platforms and railings don’t meet the modern-world requirements for access or safety. It is virtually impossible to properly maintain. While the Loo with a View is useful as a point of reference, its bow-of-a-boat shape that was novel in the 1990s is a bit naff now. The site could be transformed into something so much more useful – a community space for coming together rather than meeting or spending a penny. We have until May 4 to chip in our two cents’ worth on the plans to maintain and revitalise the Mooloolaba foreshore, including having a say on what to do about the big Loo. The redevelopment between Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba is beautiful so far, despite the naysayers warning about our coastal fringe soon being wall-to-wall rocks and concrete. It’s time to raise our voices, look forward instead of back and let the Loo go.

I
have to say both the NRL and AFL did really good jobs commemorating Anzac Day last weekend. There were some moving renditions that were really thought-provoking. No two-up, no folks getting drunk just as an excuse, but just some very beautiful moments giving all of us time for reflection. For me it inspired me to drive out to Eudlo just after lunch on Anzac Day and pay tribute to those that made sacrifices and reminded me of the many times I attended Anzac Day with my dad in the main street of the little railway town. As I got older I used to get to read the honour roll, probably because I had a voice like a fog horn and there would be no doubt everyone could hear me. So last week I stood there in front of the Anzac monument and reflected on a whole bunch of memories, and not only did I think about HL Robinson who served in PNG, but also my Uncle Joe who was in the Battle of the Coral Sea, both just doing what they were told. As a small child I guess I always thought there was some type of glory in war, probably because I watched Combat on TV and any war
movies I could get my eyes on, but as I stood there the other day it got me thinking about the Ukraine and Russia. Just like my dad and uncle and all who were called on to defend our shores, so too with the current crisis overseas – farmers, parents, shopkeepers and ordinary citizens called upon to defend and invade depending what side they are on. The politicians and dictators weren’t and aren’t at the frontline, which is no surprise but the really sad thing is most of these conflicts and the ‘enemy’ aren’t any different; they are just doing what they are told. As the flag fluttered above my head I had fond memories of Anzac Day in Eudlo from 1959 to 1972, but I couldn’t help but think about all the news stories of what is happening to those poor souls in this latest conflict, and was reminded about a quote from Winston S Churchill: “One day President Roosevelt told me that he was asking publicly for suggestions about what the war should be called. I said at once ‘The Unnecessary War’.” As we frequently say at this time of year ‘lest we forget’. Maybe we should also remember that most people are just like us?

Thirty-six years after Tom Cruise first uttered those immortal words, Sami Muirhead is definitely feeling the need for speed.
W
hen you hear Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins, does it transport you to a happy place? Back in 1986, cinema audiences were treated to a one-two punch of Cruise and Kilmer, a high-flying adventure with rebel Maverick and an Iceman who never made mistakes. Jet planes. Missiles. Motorbikes. Tom Cruise standing so close to Val Kilmer you didn’t know if they were going to kiss. Then, of course, there was THAT pash against the wall between Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. That was the first serious kiss I ever witnessed on the big screen. And what about that bromance between Maverick and Goose? It gave men and women friendship life goals. Throw in hit song after hit song, some sweaty beach volleyball scenes, fast planes, some tragedy and so many witty zingers (“I feel the need, the need for speed”) and Top Gun really did have it all. Well, in less than a month, Top Gun: Maverick will be blasting onto the big screen. Goose’s kid is all grown up and is flying and is called Rooster. And I’m here for it. I am a little nervous because you just cannot often repeat or replace or relive
that magic chemistry of the original movies. I’m glad there was never a Pretty Woman 2 because who wants to see Julia Roberts and Richard Gere shacked up in suburbia like the boring rest of us? Thank goodness we never saw them fighting over who was going to whip up the spaghetti bolognese for their three bratty kids for dinner mid-week. No thanks. Best we leave Vivienne and Edward Lewis forever fixing polo divots as they flirt their fabulous backsides off with each other. What if they had gone back and made a Titanic 2? We never really wanted to see Rose move on from losing Jack into the deep blue abyss as that film ended, did we? The thought of Rose finding a new love and forgetting Leonardo is just too much to bear. We will see what happens when Maverick starts to buzz the tower for a second time with that need for speed and maybe the movie gods will grant us a little gift. So, dust off your aviators people because after 36 years Top Gun: Maverick is coming to town very soon. And if that doesn’t make you feel all the feels (including old), just remember that Tom Cruise turns 60 in a few months!

id you know that your skin is your body’s largest organ? Did you also know that your skin completely renews itself every 28 days and sheds about four kilograms of dead skin cells every year? With this in mind, Dr Carina Joubert, GP and owner of Nunkeri Beauty, says its timely with winter on the way to remember that there are important, non-cosmetic reasons to be paying extra attention to our skin in the drier months. “When winter arrives our skin invariably suffers the effects of air-conditioning and wind so we need to be mindful of minimising dryness – think of the little crevices that form in our skin when it gets really dry and how they get worse in the cold,” Dr Joubert says. “If our skin dries out too much, bacteria and other nasties actually take up residence in these little cracks and will exacerbate things like eczema and dermatitis, as well as sometimes actually causing infections in the skin.”
“So clean, moisturised skin is about more than looking good; it’s actually another aspect of our health that many of us neglect.” Dr Joubert says there are other ways to add moisture to our body that will help to keep us healthy during the colder months. “Making sure to drink enough water is important when the weather cools and we may not sweat as much, and a humidifier will add moisture to the air in your home so you skin will absorb that as well,” Dr Joubert says. “It’s also advisable to keep your showers short and not too hot so you don’t dry out or actually damage your skin. Apply a moisturiser as soon as you finish bathing while your skin is still damp and your pores are slightly open. And in winter I’d particularly recommend using a product that contains hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture, and anything containing ceramides will be great for repairing dry and damaged skin.” Dr Carina Joubert is a Sunshine Coast GP and owner of Nunkeri Beauty, nunkeri-beauty.com.

What is myopia and why should we be concerned? Myopia, or short sightedness, blurs the ability to see clearly in the distance. If you are curious to see what this looks like for your child, try out the myopia vision simulator at childmyopia.com. Myopia is a crisis that is unfolding at our doorstep. Australian children are now developing myopia earlier in life compared with four decades ago, on average by age eight. By 2050, 55 per cent of Australians are predicted to be myopic, which is an alarming fact! When one or both parents are myopic, the likelihood of developing myopia increases. Modern lifestyle choices are important contributing factors, including prolonged reading and the use of tablets, low levels of outdoor activity and the lack of good light exposure. Myopia is a progressive condition, largely between the ages of six and 17. But research shows many Australian parents remain unaware of myopia and the potential visual implications. Apart from worsening distance vision, progressive myopia weakens the eyeball integrity. This increases the risk of retinal detachment, myopic maculopathy and glaucoma later in life, as well as globe rupture with minimal trauma if highly myopic.
Myopia management is a double pronged strategy targeting prevention and minimisation. School vision screening tests are essential and then regular yearly eye checks with an optometrist thereafter are highly recommended. Addressing myopia also means addressing our lifestyle choices, including good lighting and eye breaks hourly when doing near tasks such as reading or using screens. The mantra ‘more green time and less screen time’ also holds true here. Research has shown more time outdoors, between 12 to 14 hours weekly, helps minimise myopia progression. NOISE-INDUCED HEARING LOSS Occupational noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common yet preventable occupational diseases. An Australian study estimated the national cost burden due to hearing loss was $33.3 billion in 2017. Approximately half of that was estimated to be due to financial costs, including direct health system costs and lost productivity, while the remaining half was due to the loss of well-being. Unfortunately, it does not matter where the exposure occurs – work, home or recreational – it can cause damage. If you enter your older years with an industrial hearing loss and the ageing process kicks in, life and socialising can become increasing difficult.
Luckily these days hearing protection is easy to obtain and use, and hearing aid technology is very much focused on helping industrial hearing loss. One important consideration is to have a baseline audiogram performed to measure where your hearing is right now. If the start of a loss is noted, a protection plan can be put together and you can slow the impact. Make an appointment at an independent hearing clinic for a baseline audiogram. They can give you advice on hearing protection and rehabilitation.

If you wake up stiff or sore in the mornings, don’t move like you used to (or wish to), or feel your body could do with some maintenance, I highly recommend yoga. You will feel the magic from your first class, and can maintain it with just one class per week. More classes equal more benefits. And you just might make some cool shapes too.

RELIEF FOR JOINT PAIN AND OSTEOARTHRITIS The difference between steroid injections and hyaluronic acid injections for the treatment of hip and knee joint pain is often confusing. It is common for patients who have a painful joint to have a steroid injection. Steroid injections can be a great way to manage swelling and flare-ups of osteoarthritic pain. The injection may often help relieve symptoms by reducing inflammation in the joint, but the potential benefits can sometimes be short lived. Hyaluronic acid is a fluid that is naturally found in the body and promotes the production of synovial fluid. Synovial
fluid is the thick fluid that is found in joints, which helps them to move more freely and protect the bones from injury and disease. Think of synovial fluid as the shock absorber in the joints. As osteoarthritis gets worse there is a decrease in the concentration of hyaluronic acid in the synovial fluid, causing a reduction in viscoelastic properties. By injecting hyaluronic acid into the joint, it can potentially restore the lubrication, thereby relieving pain. This may aid in extending the length of time that a patient can manage non-operative
treatment and live comfortably without undergoing a joint replacement surgery. The first line of treatment for osteoarthritis should always be education, physiotherapy, lifestyle modification, knee supports, weight management and, when required, simple analgesia. If you are struggling with joint pain, you may be a candidate for a hyaluronic acid injection. It is important to get the correct diagnosis before treatment. Research that backs this treatment is now available. A pilot study to compare two different hyaluronic acid compounds for treatment of knee osteoarthritis can be read in the International Journal of Immunopathology and Pharmacology. The journal Current Medical Research and Opinion published an article on the improvement in quality of life outcomes in patients with knee osteoarthritis following a single injection of hyaluronic acid. The results of this study showed statistically significant improvements. All patients are different and you should discuss your specific situation with your specialist. Cataract surgery: busting the myths
As more of us contract COVID, taking care of ourselves has never been more important. I recently succumbed to the virus that saw me bedridden for the better part of a week and am now working on slowly regaining my previous levels of fitness. I found my motivation was at an all-time low while I was ill and regaining that motivation has been difficult. When recovering from COVID it is important to take the time to rest and recover. When you do feel like getting moving again it is important to listen to your body and not overdo it. Slowly increase the duration of work and exercise and only if you are up to it. Make sure you continue to eat well, incorporate lots of fruit and vegetables in your diet and keep the fluids up. Don’t expect your motivation to be at the same level as before you became ill. Work towards going slowly back to your normal routine and as the weeks go on, you will find your momentum will build. The loss of motivation is normal and will return when your health and routine is back to its pre-COVID state.

Myth #1: It is done by laser. Cataract surgery is in fact done with microsurgical equipment and a very steady pair of hands! In recent years, laserassisted cataract surgery has evolved.
