Pay gap wages war on women New data indicates that the gender pay gap continues to persist with women typically earning around $25,000 less than men. Words: AAP.

T

he gap between what men and women earn has narrowed but persists, with new research showing men are twice as likely to earn more than $120,000 a year than women.

Data from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) released this month shows women typically earned about $25,000 less than men.

The overall gender pay gap continued its downward trend for the 2020/21 financial year, pegged at 22.8 per cent, meaning that for every $10 a man earned a woman would make about $7.72.

That’s down by half a percentage point from the previous year, but the WGEA says it understates the true extent of the problem.

The pay gap includes super, bonuses and additional payments, but excludes salaries for CEOs and heads of business, 81 per cent of whom are men.

More than 60 per cent of women are employed in part-time or casual roles and their work is converted into “fulltime equivalent” earnings for the sake of calculations.

The gender pay gap is not a measure of whether women earn less than men for the same job – that is pay equality and is a legal requirement.

Rather, the pay gap is an indicator of women’s overall position in the workforce, representing how women and their work are valued.

While men were twice as likely to earn more than $120,000 a year, women are “substantially over-represented at the bottom level of all earners”.

Australian National University senior lecturer in finance Anna von Reibnitz told AAP the report shows “how good Australia’s data is”.

“The amount that WGEA collects and the insights it can give is really worldleading, but it’s showing that nothing’s happening,” Dr von Reibnitz says.

“The gap is still significant and we’re not moving enough… we’ve got this great data but we’re not able to pull the levers to actually push for change.”

The biggest gaps were in construction, financial and insurance services, and the professional, scientific and technical services sectors, which had pay gaps between 24.7 per cent and 30.6 per cent.

Some 73 per cent of organisations had gender pay gaps in favour of men, while 20 per cent had achieved parity and seven per cent had a gap in favour of women.

Companies are not being held accountable or forced to show change, and while WGEA collects the data, Dr von Reibnitz says the agency can only release it in an aggregated form.

The mandatory requirements that do exist for businesses are “really just to report whether there is a policy in place to improve gender equality in some domain… you don’t need to show whether you’re doing anything about it… it’s a yes or no response,” Dr von Reibnitz says.

Releasing the data will help employees decide where they want to work, investors where they want to put their money, and consumers where they want to spend, she says.

Men are twice as likely as women to be in the top earnings quartile, earning $120,000 and above.

Women are 50 per cent more likely than men to be in the bottom quartile, earning $60,000 and less.

Over 85 per cent of Australian employers still pay men more than women. On average, women were earning about 77 per cent of men’s earnings last year.

The majority of boards are still dominated by men. Women account for less than 1 in 5 CEOs or board chairs and 1 in 3 board members While the gender pay gap continues to fall, women still earned $25,800 less on average than their male counterparts.

42 per cent of employers have reduced their pay gaps since 2020, although the gap widened for 37 per cent of employers and 21 per cent remained static.

Walking a new path The COVID pandemic dealt a huge blow to the travel industry and the thousands of Australians it supports, forcing many of those workers to rethink not just careers but their entire lives. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.

he sun rises above Caloundra and Jodie Kimberg breathes deeply, inhaling the crisp, salty air and the essence of the ocean beyond.

Mrs Kimberg is a high-flying international Qantas air crew member who now could not be more grounded.

Her slow-paced mornings as a yoga instructor are a far cry from her previous 24 years, which were spent jetting everywhere from Africa and New York to London, and her “second home’’ of Japan.

The mother of two was one of an estimated 90,000 Australians whose careers in aviation came to a screeching halt in March 2020.

She is also one of almost one million Aussies who were put out of work, or forced to diversify, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

After working more than two decades in the same industry, being forced to walk a new career path was daunting.

“I was stood down at that stage,” Mrs Kimberg recalls of that fateful March day in 2020.

“I do remember that day. They sent us out an email. I was just so shellshocked.

“I recall a moment [before the pandemic]. I used to catch the airport bus to the terminal and I was sitting

near some Virgin flight attendants, who at the time were worried about their jobs. I had this moment where I thought, I’m so lucky to work for Qantas. It’s so secure, it’s so stable. Then, lo and behold.”

The McKell Institute Australian Aviation and COVID-19 Analysis of support and impact, January 2021, reports that pre-pandemic, the aviation industry employed more than 40,000 direct employees across the two biggest airline groups.

Another 50,000 people were employed by small carriers or in the rest of the supply chain.

By mid-April 2020, an estimated 12,400 aircraft had been placed into storage and passenger revenues were forecast to be down 48 per cent, or $314 billion, on the previous year.

In August 2021, Qantas alone reported a $1.73 billion loss for 2020-21.

In 2020, the nation’s largest airline had stood down 20,000 of its 30,000 staff, before moving forward with the redundancy of 8500 people.

The major airline has come under fire in recent months for its unlawful sacking of 2000 employees.

The company is now also in discussions with the Fair Work Commission to terminate its enterprise deal with long-haul cabin crew. If successful, long-term employees could

have their minimum pay cut by up to 37 per cent. It’s a controversial move in a bid for survival, but the issue is also causing further conflict for employees unsure of their future.

Mrs Kimberg’s return to the sky will be dependent on the return-to-work conditions.

“You think it will be over, but it just keeps coming,” she says of COVID impacts on the workforce.

“You get back up and then we keep

getting these things thrown at us. Here we go again, and we’re in our third year.”

Mrs Kimberg reveals many in the industry have suffered from significant mental health issues after losing not only their incomes, but also their identities.

For Mrs Kimberg, having the opportunity to turn a passion into employment was her saving grace. In her role as a yoga instructor, she holds classes from Golden Beach Yoga Space, as well as sunrise sessions by the beach.

In addition, she has used her first-hand experience of living and working in Japan, and her linguistic skills, to take up part-time employment as a Japanese language teacher at a high school.

“The hardest part of all this is having to change my mindset… to totally reinvent yourself,” Mrs Kimberg says.

“I weave this into my yoga classes: you are stronger than you think you are.

It’s not until you are pushed that you understand that fully.

“We do that in yoga to practise for real life… ‘I am strong, I can do this’. It’s a lot about mindset.

“You think, life is not going my way, what am I going to do with my life?

“It’s been up and down with the change of pace. I miss travel so much.” myweeklypreview.com.au

Immediately before the pandemic, around 228,000 people indicated they left a job because they changed to a ‘better job’ or ‘wanted a change’. This fell to around 129,000 people in May 2020, before rising to pre-pandemic levels in May 2021 (267,000 people). There were more than 300,000 people who had lost or left a job who reported this in both August and November 2021.

The number of people indicating they expected to change jobs in the next 12 months also rose in November, from 636,000 people in August 2021 (4.9 per cent of employed people) to 705,000 people in November 2021 (5.3 per cent). This quarterly increase of around 70,000 people was greater than the usual seasonal increase, which averaged around 24,000 over the previous five AugustNovember periods.

Earlier this month the government announced that after almost two years, the country’s borders would reopen to international arrivals. Fully vaccinated visa holders and tourists will be allowed into Australia from February 21. Arrivals will need to meet quarantine requirements for each individual state and territory, and arrival caps will remain in place.

The announcement has given Australians renewed hope that the industry in on the road to recovery. But in reality, the path forward is littered with obstacles. Staff and flight shortages remain, while countries abroad also have their own requirements, making outbound travel complicated in some cases.

“Our future remains to be seen,” Mrs Kimberg says.

“Some of my friends are back working.

Sydney and Melbourne went back a couple of months ago.

“Brisbane has recalled everyone but there are no scheduled flights out of Brissy yet. We are still sitting at around 30 per cent capacity prior to COVID.” Of course, the travel industry has also suffered a huge blow at a domestic level.

Here on the Sunshine Coast, travel agents were suddenly left without income as the bills piled up.

Award-winning businesswoman Zoe Sparks was one of the many who faced an uncertain future. It was a case of diversify, or don’t survive.

When COVID-19 hit Australia, Ms Sparks’ 22-year-old business, Spectacular Travel and Events, seized to function.

For seven months she had no income.

Determined to stay afloat, Ms Sparks set out to find and fill a gap within the market, and so, SunSHINE Boxes was born.

These beautiful gift hampers encompass the best produce and product the Sunshine Coast has to offer. She now ships the hampers Australia wide, and offers local delivery.

“It’s been huge. Everyone really loves the buy local, support local theme,” Ms Sparks tells My Weekly Preview.

“Events are now starting to bounce

back with a vengeance… I feel like I’ve got two full-time jobs.

“It’s a great problem to have.

“For a lot in our industry, for nine months they were still working full-time even though no one was travelling. The heart-breaking thing was giving everything back, the commission you’d earned in the six months prior.

“Most in our industry have earned virtually nothing in two years. Our industry will never be the same again.”

With interest in travel now starting to pique, Ms Sparks encourages people to support local travel agents, and Australian airlines and tourism operators.

“A lot of people have been very kind and understood what has been going on behind the scenes for people in tourism and hospitality.

“It’s definitely about supporting local businesses. For a lot of those little

been a growing trend towards unearthing a passion and creating opportunities from that, Ms Langford says.

“It’s the great awakening. People are searching for fulfilment.”

Of course, it doesn’t come easy, particularly for someone who may have worked consistently in one industry for a long period of time.

Ms Langford says confidence can be one of the biggest obstacles.

“A lot of people think they know who they are because of their job, that their job shapes who they are. All of a sudden that’s stripped right back to the bare bones; they think, can I do anything else? Who would hire me?

“It’s about mindset, self-worth and confidence. That’s what we tap into.

Everyone has transferable skills. It’s about stopping and saying, ‘what do people come to me for? What’s my genius zone? What comes easy to me?’

“If you’re at a barbecue, what sort of conversation would get you lit up? It’s almost about throwing your resume out and tapping back into what your gut feels.”

BLI BLI CASTLE 2.0 The owners of Bli Bli’s beloved Sunshine Castle are vowing to rebuild it bigger and better, after devising an exciting new chapter for the embattled attraction.

One of the Sunshine Coast’s longeststanding tourism drawcards, the castle was forced to vastly reduce operations in January last year.

This follows the discovery of major concrete cancer, which means some areas of the 1972-built property are unsafe.

However, the owners continue to run mini tours, a toy store and coffee shop.

Despite the setbacks, they are staying positive and working towards a positive future for the Coast icon.

Owner-operator Birte Benecke-Uhrig says a wonderful solution has presented itself, one that will honour the attraction,

keep it in the Bli Bli area, create jobs and provide an enormous tourism boost for the region.

“By far the solution with the most heart and passion is the idea and intention of the family to relocate and rebuild the iconic Sunshine Castle on another site,” Ms Benecke-Uhrig says.

“The site we have found and are working to secure, whilst still in early stages, offers the potential to tick all the boxes required for a Castle 2.0.

“This will be purpose-built and created with 20 years of experience and backed by 50 years of history.

“We want to make it a big drawcard for Bli Bli and the region going into the future.”

The new Sunshine Castle will preserve some of the unique structural elements and displays of its predecessor.

Ms Benecke-Uhrig says to make all this happen, they are in the process of examining “urban renewal options” for the existing site.

“We are only at the beginning of this process and keen to work closely with council to achieve a positive outcome for everyone,” she says.

The future of the current site might include apartments, which would fit a vision outlined in the new Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme Project.

Do you know how to save a life?

As more and more publicly accessible defibrillators are made available on the Sunshine Coast, members of the public are encouraged to learn how to use them. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

S

udden cardiac arrest can happen anywhere at any time.

In an instant it can change lives and without early life-saving intervention, often performed by members of the public, survival is slim.

According to the Heart Foundation, each year in Australia about 25,000 people have a cardiac arrest out of hospital, and it is estimated that as few as five per cent of these people survive.

Different to a heart attack when a patient is often conscious, a cardiac arrest is when your heart stops beating.

This means your brain and vital organs

are starved of oxygen, and you become unconscious and stop breathing or do not breathe normally.

CPR and the use of a defibrillator, or automated external defibrillator, on a cardiac arrest patient while waiting for emergency services to arrive can be the difference between life and death.

Defibs are becoming more accessible in public places, particularly at shopping centres, schools and gyms, halls or outdoor amenities like parks and public toilets.

Adjunct Associate Professor Bill Lord from the Department of Paramedicine at Monash University says every second is crucial when someone goes into cardiac arrest. “If a person’s heart stops suddenly and unexpectedly it’s vital that they receive immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation

(CPR) and that an automated external defibrillator (AED) is applied. For each minute delay in doing this, the chance of survival decreases by approximately 10 per cent.”

Recent research from Monash University reveals bystander defibrillation is associated with a 45 per cent increase in the odds of a good functional recovery from cardiac arrest than those initially shocked by paramedics.

“This means that those in cardiac arrest who were defibrillated by bystanders were much more likely to return to their pre-arrest level of health,” Assoc Prof Lord says. “Survival of an event is great, but return to normal health is even better.

“There are increasing numbers of publicly accessible defibrillators in the

community but finding one and ensuring that someone knows how to use the device is a challenge.”

Hoping to turn these statistics around, a Sunshine Coast club is educating the community on a program that will significantly increase the cardiac arrest survival rate in Queensland.

The Maroochy North Shore Lions Club is working with Assoc Prof Lord to drum up awareness of the GoodSAM app, which alerts registered users of medical emergencies and nearby defibrillator devices.

The app has been adopted by ambulance services in Victoria and New Zealand. There are two versions – a Responder and an Alerter app.

Members of the public over 18 years of age with CPR training can register to use the app and be alerted if there is a cardiac emergency close by, and if there is a defib in the area. They can then help until paramedics arrive.

NEWS emergency services. It currently relies solely on the community to be ‘citizen first responders’ when they see disaster strike.

“Responders who are certified in first aid can use the Responder app to register and receive cardiac alerts,” Assoc Prof Lord says. “Anyone can download the Alerter version to let the nearest responders know that help is required. Both versions can upload the location of AEDs in the community.”

Maroochy North Shore Lions president Greg Leonard says the club aims is to spearhead this initiate on a local level.

“We first became aware of the app through [Assoc Prof Lord], who visited as a guest speaker,” Mr Leonard says.

“He spoke about Queensland’s need to have such as thing and as a Lions club we thought this was worth getting involved in – something that could preserve life.”

“The main thing for us is to alert the community about GoodSAM and have as many people who are appropriately qualified to download the Responder app, and to have as many community members as possible to download the Alerter app so we can grow the education and communication around it.”

Mr Leonard says the next step will be working with Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) and government departments to have the technology

“Our preference would be to work with the leadership of organisations like QAS and through the health minister and other government departments to have GoodSAM embedded in their response system.”

The club has also donated two defib units, worth around $3000 each, at public locations for 24-hour access, including one outside Twin Waters Pharmacy and at North Shore Community Centre.

Despite more defibs appearing in public places, a 2020 survey from the Heart Foundation reveals out of 7200 Australian adults, 52 per cent of people did not feel confident using an AED if they thought someone was having a cardiac arrest.

The Heart Foundation’s Bill Stavreski is urging Australians not to feel hesitant about using the lifesaving device in an emergency.

“There’s a fear factor around defibrillators, but they are designed to be user-friendly and you don’t need to have medical training to help save a life,” he says.

“The step-by-step recorded instructions will guide you, and even if it turns out the person is not having a cardiac arrest, using the AED will not hurt them.”

If you think someone is having a cardiac arrest, call 000 immediately and then check if they are breathing.

“If they aren’t, use an AED if one is available. If not, start CPR,” Mr Stavreski says.

Mr Stavreski is encouraging everyone to brush up on CPR. He also recommends anyone aged 45 and over, or 30 if you’re Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, to talk to their GP for a heart health check.

This month also marks Red Feb, Heart Research Australia’s annual campaign to wear red in awareness of heart disease.

A new chapter Respected doctor and IVF specialist Dr James Moir retired last week, but the man who has delivered countless babies has plenty of hobbies to keep him occupied. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

D

r James Moir is not the kind of man to throw away an unfinished patchwork quilt.

His late wife Julie had been sewing a quilt when she passed away suddenly in 2008 and Dr Moir, who has delivered 5000 babies across four continents in his career as an obstetrician and gynaecologist, recently sat down at a sewing machine to finish it off himself.

It may not be what you’d expect of an esteemed doctor, but Dr Moir is a remarkable man. After 47 years practising medicine, he retired on February 11.

“My wife had a sewing machine that had broken down and I was thinking of getting a new one for doing simple jobs around the house, like hemming curtains.

My daughter found out which model I had been looking at and ordered one. When I was looking through my wife’s things for a spare bit of cloth to practise on, I found this one old piece of cloth. I unfolded it and in there was a patchwork quilt she was three-quarters of the way through finishing.

Some of the panels were still tacked down with safety pins onto the backing fabric, so I finished it off with my elementary skills.

“I can do the very basic things,” he says.

“I got a bit of advice from various friends and followed the instruction book and off

I went. I finished tacking down the various squares and the patterns and shapes inside those and tidied up the edges and put a nice, neat hem in and now we have a family heirloom started by my wife 15 years ago and finished by me this week.”

Along with sewing, Dr Moir plays flute with Buderim Concert Band, of which he is president, and has started piano lessons again for the first time in 50 years at the age of 70. Having learnt piano as a child, he found a local teacher to help him stretch his capabilities.

Growing up in a small village in rural Scotland, Dr Moir’s long and distinguished career began when he finished medical school in Aberdeen in 1975. His medical career took him around the world from Scotland to England, Canada, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Tanzania and various parts of Australia, before settling to practise on the Sunshine Coast in 1993.

After following in his father’s footsteps to become a doctor, Dr Moir felt compelled to help use his medical training to help those in the developing world and early in his career he spent time working as a

medical and scientific research officer in Papua New Guinea.

“Following seven incredible years in Papua New Guinea, I knew there was a need for women’s health support which is what inspired me to pursue further studies in obstetrics and gynaecology,” he says.

Here on the Coast, Dr Moir began offering early fertility treatments in 1996 and was responsible for the IVF treatment that led to the famous Clegg triplets being born in 1999.

“They came into the office last week and I got a picture with the triplets again and their mum Christine, more than 20 years later. It was really good. I like to bump into people on the Coast I’ve helped. It’s a very rewarding part of the job to help couples or women get pregnant that are having problems and then they see the baby for the first time on a scan at six or seven weeks after a positive result. Through most of my career, I’ve been able to follow them through the pregnancy and deliver them myself at the end of the pregnancy.”

Another highlight of Dr Moir’s career has been visiting Tanzania with helicopter

pilot Jan Becker of Becker Helicopters, a midwife who has established an NGO, Midwife Vision, to help train midwives in early baby resuscitation in Tanzania.

“They invited me along in 2015 and we all rolled up our sleeves and I was able to help in the labour ward and learn a lot from the experienced doctors and midwives there and in turn was able to do some training of junior doctors and midwives.”

While Dr Moir has enjoyed a rewarding career, his greatest joy has been seeing his four children grow into wonderful adults after losing their mother.

“It’s one of the greatest rewards in my life to see my kids grow up into happy and healthy well-adjusted people who still enjoy each other’s company,” he says. “It’s been nice watching them grow up.”

And while he’ll miss his work, he feels it’s the right time to close that chapter of his life. “It’s a bit like being at a musical concert where you’re doing a performance and you want to leave with the audience wanting more,” he says. “In some ways, I think I’ve done a lot, but there are still things I might have developed an interest in if I’d had more opportunity. I’m happy I’ve done my time and I can now pull back … and enjoy some of my own interests and family.”

A

fter the global equity market boom of the past 21 months, the outlook for 2022 is far more challenging, which has important investment implications.

Material tightening from the US Federal Reserve and rising bond yields support a more cautious asset allocation – we are very underweight bonds and US equities, and slightly underweight growth assets, despite zero cash rates.

The outlook favours value ahead of growth, cyclicals over bond-sensitives and ex-US over US. Significant China policy easing should be positive for emerging markets after substantial underperformance For the year ahead, we see five major global investment themes:

1 – The Omicron wave to be short and sharp, with little impact on markets.

The Omicron variant of COVID-19 is driving a sharp spike in new cases globally but has yet to result in a large increase in deaths or restrictions on economic activity.

2 – The robust US boom to lift world growth, earnings and inflation. The US economy is in an inflationary boom, growing rapidly as it pushes through full employment. This expansion should prove difficult to stop.

“Significant China policy easing should be positive for emerging markets” 3 – US Fed to tighten policy materially more than expected. With the Fed’s target inflation measure moderately above two per cent for some time now and maximum employment satisfied, the case for accommodative policy disappears. As such, we expect the Fed to lift interest rates, starting in March 2022, and at a much faster rate and with a higher terminal rate than markets currently discount, unless

Omicron drives a dip in the economy.

4 – Bonds and growth stocks to be tested. US Fed tightening should particularly test the US bond market, but higher bond yields should also pressure equity market valuations, particularly in the US. 5 – China to significantly ease as the US tightens. China looks very different to the other major economies and should significantly ease policy ahead of October’s China Communist Party (CCP) Congress. Structurally, we see a number of headwinds to China’s growth: • negative demographics, stemming from the long-running one-child policy; • elevated non-financial debt levels at 222 per cent, double pre-GFC levels, and above most advanced economies; • trade and foreign direct investment headwinds, reflecting trade tensions, particularly with the US; and • food security issues, with surges in food inflation every five years or so.

A

Sunshine Coast charity dedicated to the memory of a popular surfer is marking a major milestone in its mission to establish a permanent home.

SalTy Souls Legacy has been putting vulnerable and disengaged Sunshine Coast children aged five to 17 through surfing programs since 2018.

The charity was formed to honour Moffat Beach surfer Tyler Kennedy, who tragically died while on a surf trip in Bali in 2017.

After months of fundraising, planning and community generosity, council approval has now been granted to establish the headquarters in Maroochydore.

Charity founder and the sister of Tyler, Tamara Smith, says this will make a world of difference to the children.

“We are at that stage now where SalTys need its own space,” she says.

“Our garage at home has been turned into a storage space and we have a container we are renting that is out at Nambour. Whenever one of our kids from the program needs to change over a board or we need more, it’s a matter of driving out there.

“At any one time we have up to 120 boards in storage. We have to have different boards to match them to the children’s size and skill level.”

The new headquarters will be next to Thrive Youth Hub on Aerodrome Road after the space was generously offered to SalTy Souls.

“To have SalTys flashed out on Aerodrome Road loud and proud, it’s amazing for us to get our cause out there,” Ms Smith says.

The Rotary Club of Alexandra Headland has been integral in this space becoming a realty, donating the proceeds

from its Winter Solstice Swim in 2021 to the charity.

“We are so grateful that Rotary saw our desperate needs,” Ms Smith says. “We were struggling with the reality that we would have to raise $30,000 ourselves to go towards this and that [money] was not actually going to be able to go to the kids.”

Two shipping containers have also been donated. These will be transformed into the hub. “One will be a fully deckedout surfboard storage space that will open into a workshop space. The second container will be an office space and pop-up shop for our charity merch.”

Work is anticipated to begin on transforming the containers in the next month, but Ms Smith is hoping the generosity of the community will continue and is calling on those who can to help with the internal fit-out.

“What we are needing from the community now is support. If any tradies can help with donating items or services for our fit-out – it’s all of all the little things.”

SalTy Souls’ fully funded surf therapy programs run for six weeks and each child is gifted a repurposed surfboard and beach starter kit so they can continue surfing.

The community has won its epic legal battle against the controversial $900-million Sekisui development after a decision was finally handed down in the Supreme Court. The judgement, released on February 9, set aside a ruling made in June 2020 when the Planning and Environment Court (P&E) dismissed the community’s appeal against the project’s approval by council. It comes almost as year after Save Yaroomba campaigners began appealing the P&E decision. “The fact that we’ve won, it’s a win for democracy, it’s a win for community, it’s a win for our planning scheme and it is a win for future and subsequent communities who are seeing developments that are not sensible or in line with the town plan,” Save Yaroomba campaign spokesperson Kathryn Hyman says. A 23-page judgement found the previous P&E court decision had not adequately considered the community’s expectations relating to building heights. The Sekisui beachfront estate in Yaroomba included apartments and two and three-storey homes, community open spaces and a seven-storey five-star hotel. Sekisui House issued a statement saying it will “consider its options” in response to the Court of Appeal decision.

DOG-LOVER RELEASES LATEST PICTURE BOOK ADVENTURE SCHOOLS IN FOR NIRIMBA PRIMARY STUDENTS

A Marcoola author is keeping the adventures of her beloved beagle, Maisie, alive with the release of her latest picture book.

Lyn Lysaught’s writing career began six years ago after publishing Just Like Maisie, an adventure story that captured the cheeky nature of her dog.

Her fourth book, Maisie and the Mermaids, almost didn’t happen after the sudden and tragic loss of Maisie, but Ms Lysaught says she was not quite ready to stop the beagle’s story – dedicating this one in her memory.

Maisie’s latest adventure takes her into an underwater world of princess mermaids, a stolen treasure chest and Octo, a terrifying giant octopus. Once again, she gets herself into an impossibly dangerous situation. She must summon all her courage to help the princess mermaids and escape the clutches of Octo and his cave of darkness.

“While not always obedient, the Maisie character is a little beagle with very big ideas,” Ms Lysaught says.

“She wants to experience life and explore the world and she does so with determination, courage and resilience.

A new school has officially welcomed 160 foundation students after class began for 2022 last week.

Nirimba State Primary School at Caloundra South will serve the rapidly growing suburbs of Aura, and principal Steven Moore says students and staff at are delighted with the classrooms, grounds and facilities.

“It’s such an exciting time to be here with this community growing at such a rapid pace,” Mr Moore says. “There has been a great amount of thought and attention to detail gone into

ensuring our school is providing amazing educational opportunities to students of the Nirimba and Banya communities.”

The $75 million facility is the fifth school to have opened on the Sunshine Coast is the past five years and Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says plans are underway for more schools in the region. “There are another 11 new schools to come in 2023 and 2024 thanks to a further $1 billion,” she says.

Nirimba State Primary School will eventually cater for 1200 students.

Wishlist is just one organisation that would literally be forced to close a lot of doors if it weren’t for volunteers.

Wishlist coffee houses at Nambour and Gympie hospitals rely heavily on volunteer support. Some prefer food prep, others make coffee but all contribute to the profits that then buy additional resources for the hospital. Many of our volunteers are long-termers and over the years have ranged in age from 16 to 85, and all are completely committed to their role.

Our accommodation facilities – Reed House and Wishlist House – are available 24/7 thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers. Not only will you be greeted warmly by volunteers but you will also be made acutely aware that you are cared

about during your stay. To say this team is dedicated to the support of people in need is an understatement. In the early days of Reed House, a volunteer slept on the office floor to ensure she was available for guests arriving through the night. That lovely lady and many of her colleagues are still with us to this day.

Our shuttle bus drivers are devoted to the timely and safe transport of guests to their medical appointments every weekday. This service is often a lifeline for guests because without affordable accommodation and free transport to SCUH, we know many would simply not undergo treatment.

Our office is regularly a hive of activity as volunteers pack colouring kits and backpacks for children taken into foster care for our hospitals. And if you’ve visited a local hospital you’ll know there’s usually a smiling face and helping hand to greet you at the front door, to ensure you are where you’re meant to be. What a gift that is when you’re late, lost or nervous.

This includes regular monitoring through beach surveys to provide reliable data for decisionmaking. A tidal gauge at Military Jetty also helps to monitor tidal flows and sea levels.

Council continues to work with the state government who manages North Bribie Island as one of its National Parks.

What happened to integrity in sport, asks Ashley Robinson, who is baffled by the failings in cricket and tennis.

ussies spend a fortune on vitamins and supplements but is it worth it?

Health advice for a couple of generations has been pretty simple: eat your veggies, sleep well, exercise and take your vitamins. Except that we should probably leave off that last one.

More than 30 years of research has failed to find any evidence that dietary supplements do any real good, but more than 8.3 million Australians regularly buy them, Roy Morgan research has showed.

Market research estimates Australians spend just shy of $2 billion on vitamins, minerals and their ilk every year, with this increasing annually by about five per cent.

Maybe we think we are warding off an enemy, with vitamin pills seen as armour, but the best way to get nutrients is by eating foods that naturally contain them.

A couple of years ago, an analysis of about 200 randomised-controlled studies published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found popular supplements like vitamin C and calcium are mostly useless, unless you have a deficiency of that vitamin.

A British Medical Journal analysis

published last year found there was zilch advantage in taking supplements to ward off non-communicable ailments such as heart diseases and cancer.

Even the Federal Government says that unless a person has a deficiency (and few of us do), there is no evidence most Australians get any benefit from taking dietary supplements. And still we buy them, even though for most, it does nothing but produce rolled-gold urine.

Most of us know nothing about vitamins except what we are peppered with on social media or sold on through clever ads and packaging.

A vitamin duping story that tickles my interest is souped-up water. The plain stuff that comes out of the tap is apparently not good enough anymore. Even though Australia has water quality standards that are the envy of the rest of the world, we spend a motza on prettied-up water.

The evidence is unanimous that the best way to get nutrients is by eating foods that naturally contain them.

Are we deluded? Perhaps, as we battle imaginary monsters. Maybe we are just fools who like to flush millions of dollars down the toilet.

ack in my early childhood there were a few consistent things in regional Queensland: meat and three veg; cricket and tennis for boys; and vigoro and tennis for girls. There was no asking by parents; that’s just what you did. Good or bad, just like dinner there were no other choices. So most of us grew up thinking those sports were pretty important. But over the years, probably the last couple of decades, I for one have lost interest in them because it seems to me those playing tennis and cricket have got a bit special. Cricketers seem more interested in their sponsored sunglasses, hair gel and tattoos than the daily grind of test matches or even Sheffield Shield, while many tennis players are prima donnas.

In saying that Ash Barty and Justin Langer give back to their sports because of their integrity in winning and losing. The media, of course, plays an enormous role in the pluses and minuses of the sports, as does Tennis Australia and Cricket Australia.

I find fails on the media and governing body with tennis not just for the debacle of Djokovic, but also the behaviour of fans while Kyrgios and Kokkinakis were playing.

It was atrocious treatment of opposition players and highlights what a backwater we are. Then we have some imbecilic in the media having a crack at Ash Barty for drinking a beer at the press conference while Kyrgios shared a beer with a punter and barely raised an eyebrow. Now I don’t care about the beer but what about COVID and here is an idiot sharing spit in public and no one cares, but they care about a national hero drinking a Corona that was offered to her. What a joke.

The treatment of Justin Langer by the players and the board is right up there as well. Here is a bloke who took over a cricket team that had just been caught cheating and brought the integrity back, and he gets shafted by the blokes that he has helped resurrect because apparently he is too direct. Wow. I don’t know who Charles Caleb Colton was but he nailed it with this: “Nothing more completely baffles one who is full of trick and duplicity, than straightforward and simple integrity in another.” I can think of a couple of governing boards, some in the media and some athletes that might be candidates for the above.

here do you think the friendliest locals live in all of Australia? It is Maleny, according to travel giant booking.com and its annual Traveller Review Awards.

Maleny has won top place for a second year in a row in the Most Welcoming Town in Australia, taken from millions of traveller reviews. These scored destinations and attractions on criteria such as staff friendliness and value for money. Montville came ninth on the list.

We have recently bought a little white church-type building in Witta, which is 10 minutes down the road from Maleny, so we are spending a lot of time in the picturesque green part of the world in our quaint house. It is divine. Sublime. I have roses growing in the crisp garden for the first time in my life and actual country boots sitting on the porch. And the folk are indeed super friendly.

For nearly a decade, our family of five has swerved eating out for breakfast because more food ends up on the floor than in our mouths. Cafes were replaced with park plays. Reading the newspaper over bacon and eggs became a distant memory. Once, we did venture to a cafe for

Sunday breakfast and my one-year-old son slipped right out of his highchair and onto the concrete. We all left in tears.

Another disastrous cafe outing a short time later resulted in me knocking two hot coffees off the table as my huge handbag swung from my shoulder like a wrecking ball, taking out everything in its path.

Broken glass and dreams shattered onto the floor as I re-ordered the coffees to take away and resigned myself to the fact caffeine was best enjoyed from the drive through for a few more years.

But our babes are growing up and we are venturing back to the land of lattes and hot breakfast served at your table. It is one of my favourite things to do.

So, we went to a little local gem called Sarah’s Unplugged and my seven-year-old son knocked over his drink three times. And the lady who I assumed is Sarah (so let’s call her that) was so lovely about my clumsy boy and his constant mess that it made me feel so grateful to be dining out at an establishment where kindness and compassion are served in abundance.

So congratulations to Maleny where the grass is literally greener and the people are officially the most friendly in all of Australia.

eserve Bank of Australia governor Philip Lowe believes raising the cash rate too early could put an expected decline in the unemployment rate below four per cent at risk. However, at the same time the governor has told federal politicians the central bank is committed to maintaining low and stable inflation.

“The stronger the economy and the more upward pressure on prices and wages, the stronger will be the case for an increase in interest rates,” Dr Lowe told the House of Representatives economics committee on Friday.

“In Australia, we too have had higher inflation than we and others expected” He said for the first time in several decades, inflation has become a major issue in the global economy.

The US reported annual inflation of 7.5 per cent, the highest level since February 1982, while at the same time wages are growing at the fastest pace in at least 20 years.

“In Australia, we too have had higher inflation than we and others expected, although the increase here is smaller than

in many other countries,” Dr Lowe said in his opening six-monthly address to the committee.

The consumer price index currently sits at 3.5 per cent.

“We are feeling the effects of global supply-chain problems and higher oil prices, but we have not seen the same increases in goods prices as have occurred in the United States,” he said.

At the same time wages growth has picked up recently, but only to the low rate prevailing before the COVID-19 pandemic and the vast bulk of Australians are still experiencing wages increase of no more than “two point something” per cent.

“There is, however, more than the usual degree of uncertainty around the outlook for inflation and wages,” Dr Lowe said.

“It is still unclear as to whether, and at what pace, the demand for goods will normalise as infection rates decline.”

Surfer and GemLife Pacific Paradise homeowner Sel Sullivan keeps fit by surfing

eeping active is a common goal among homeowners at GemLife over-50s lifestyle resorts on the Sunshine Coast, and for Sel Sullivan there is nothing better than grabbing a longboard and catching a wave as part of an early-morning exercise ritual.

The GemLife Pacific Paradise homeowner says nearby Mudjimba, Coolum and Noosa beaches are his top surfing spots on the Sunshine Coast, and he can be found riding the waves at one of them nearly every day of the year.

“I probably surf at nearby Mudjimba Beach 80 per cent of the time but places like Noosa, which is one of the few beaches that faces north and is sheltered from the wind, is pretty good too, especially if you surf early in the morning like I do,” the fit 70-year-old says.

Surfing, he says, is an activity enjoyed by all ages including many over 50s. “I regularly surf with a few other guys who range in age from 64 to 77. I started in the sport when I was a youngster living two hours north of Auckland in New Zealand and just half an hour from the closest beaches.”

After leaving school, Mr Sullivan spent 12 months living in the UK’s Newquay in Cornwall, where he continued surfing.

“There are some great surfing beaches off the UK’s west coast,” he says.

Newquay was also where he met the love of his life Judy, whom he married 40 years ago in March. The couple moved to Australia from New Zealand in 1991, but despite having access to some of the world’s greatest surfing beaches, Mr Sullivan took a 20-year break from surfing.

Then, in 2001 he was gifted a longboard for his 50th birthday from his wife, son and daughter.

He is now just as dedicated to the sport as he was before giving it up and surfs solely for his own benefit and enjoyment. “Surfing keeps you active and in good shape. An hour on the surfboard is a remedy to fix anything,” he says.

He particularly enjoys riding the longboard, which, he says, at nine- or 10-feet long provides a lot more buoyancy and makes it easy to catch waves and to paddle.

Although not into competitive surfing himself, he says he loves to watch major surfing competitions such as the Noosa Festival of Surfing which is held in March and attracts thousands of surfers and spectators each year.

fter several attempts at retirement, Judy White finally took the plunge and finished up her last day working in a medical practice in Gladstone.

Before recommending surgery to someone suffering with hip or knee osteoarthritis, I recommend exhausting all non-operative methods of treatment first. These include physiotherapy, weight management, lifestyle modification, medication and, potentially, injection therapy.

Visit a physiotherapist for range-ofmotion and strengthening exercises for managing the symptoms of joint pain.

Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle is vitally important. Ask your GP to check your BMI and suggest effective methods of weight loss if necessary.

It is important to modify the activities you perform if you suffer from joint pain.

Choose low-impact activities such as walking, swimming and cycling.

A good medication for joint pain is Panadol Osteo (or equivalent), but always check with your GP before commencing, particularly if you have liver disease. There are also injections available to help treat joint osteoarthritis. These can be discussed at the Sunshine Coast Injection Clinic.

Being educated about your condition is important. Consult an orthopaedic surgeon about the best course of treatment for you or attend one of our knee patient education seminars.

On most days neurosurgeons focus on diagnosing patient symptoms and developing minimally invasive treatment options. Neurosurgical procedures are generally conducted only once other treatment choices have been explored because a conservative route is always preferred.

Neurosurgeons treat a wide range of neurological concerns, as well as injuries affecting the spinal cord and brain. A diagnosis is usually made through patient interviews, physical examinations, lab tests and imaging studies.

A neurosurgeon’s role encompasses a wide range of medical and rehabilitative surgical procedures and you don’t need to have a life-threatening issue to be referred to one. Chronic back or neck pain are just two common conditions that might have your GP referring you to a neurosurgeon for specialist care. They can find out if herniated discs or nerve damage is to blame for your pain and treatment can then be planned. This could include injections or surgery.

If you’re experiencing back or neck pain that just won’t go away it’s important to consult your doctor who may then refer you to a neurosurgeon.

Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anaemia worldwide. It develops when the amount of iron being absorbed from the diet is less than the amount being lost.

While we naturally lose some iron each day, these losses can increase if there is bleeding, such as from heavy periods or bleeding from the bowel.

Iron is found in a wide variety of foods, but the iron from animal sources such as meat is more easily absorbed than the iron found in grains or vegetables.

While there are many health benefits to plant-based, vegan and vegetarian diets, it is important that people who follow these diets are aware of the potential for iron deficiency to develop.

Oral iron supplements can be an effective way of increasing iron stores in people who are low in iron. They are best absorbed when taken every second day.

While iron deficiency is the most common cause of anaemia, there are other causes also. If you suspect you may be anaemic or iron deficient, a simple blood test can help to determine your iron levels and suggest whether you may benefit from iron supplementation.

A death benefit is made up of any super you have left over and any death cover when you die. Your super fund can pay it to your beneficiaries.

You can tell your fund where to direct your money when you die, but it’s easy to overlook making a nomination and the process can be confusing.

Death benefit nominations in super may be binding or non-binding. A binding nomination means your super fund must pay the money to the people you nominate and in the proportion you choose. If you make a non-binding nomination, your fund will refer to your wishes but has some discretion where to pay your money. Many funds only offer non-binding nominations.

Nominations may be lapsing or non-lapsing. A non-lapsing nomination stays in place until you die, while a lapsing nomination generally lasts for only three years. You can then renew the nomination.

Most funds offer only lapsing nominations.

The logic is that sometimes relationships end or circumstances change, and a person’s original nomination may no longer reflect their wishes.

Some of the super funds Super Consumers Australia talked to said they’re proactive about informing members if their nomination is about to lapse.

For your death benefit nomination to be valid it needs to be in writing, signed, dated, witnessed by two adults who aren’t beneficiaries, sent to the super fund and complete so it adds up to 100 per cent.

A beneficiary can only be a legal personal representative or a dependent beneficiary, so you can’t nominate a parent, sibling, grandchild or friend unless they’re financially dependent.

If you want any remaining super to go to someone who isn’t a dependent, you can nominate a legal personal representative to distribute your remaining super in accordance with your will.

While death benefit distributions are generally straightforward, the best way to have peace of mind about where your money goes after your death is to have a valid nomination in place.

BUY-NOW-PAY-LATER INNOVATION A rent-to-own initiative gives renters an opportunity to get a foot onto the property ladder. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

ffordability and the drying up of the Bank of Mum and Dad is making it tough for first homebuyers, but there is now a unique savings option that has come onto the market.

OwnHome targets renters who are struggling with saving for a home deposit but who can afford regular mortgage repayments.

It has received a tick of approval from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, which earlier this month announced a minority investment in this rent-to-own start-up.

“Approved, credit-worthy customers can move into their own home without the need for a deposit by paying an upfront fee and making monthly payments that build their deposit over time,” a CBA announcement stated.

There is a quite a bit of detail which needs careful reading around how OwnHome works for first homebuyers.

Fundamentally, it offers clients the ability to move into a home immediately without the 10 to 20 per cent deposit that is traditionally required.

ust a minute’s drive from the major throughway of Maroochydore Road and walking distance to early learning, primary and senior schools, the auction outcome of the four-bedroom home at 117 Millwell Road in Maroochydore is another sign this area is changing and strongly.

Listed by Define Property’s Greg Turnbull, the house sold under the hammer for a “phenomenal” $850,000 to a local couple who have two very young children, beating some investors to the prize. The buyers plan to fully renovate the original home which has been rented out for some time.

“The price exceeded expectations,” Mr Turnbull said. “It’s the biggest changing part of Maroochydore in terms of price.

Most of the properties coming up for sale are rentals, like this one. It’s owneroccupiers that are buying.”

“Our last three in that pocket have been rental properties of ours that have been taken over by owner-occupiers,” he added.

HOLD ONTO YOUR HATS IN BUDERIM The wind was howling around the hills on

the weekend but that didn’t put off a determined Sydney buyer who secured under the hammer a Buderim unit for $211,000 more than its purchase price just under two years ago.

Property Today’s Jamie Hill who listed the villa 2 at 23 Clithero Avenue in Buderim described the auction outcome as amazing.

“It was purchased 20 months ago for $500,000,” he said. “It’s the market growth through that part of Buderim.

“In the last two years the housing market has grown 44 per cent in Buderim.”

Eight registered bidders were chasing the unique property, but it was a recent Sydney relocator and now owner-occupier who has family in the area, who came out ahead at the fall of the hammer.

HOLIDAYING MEMORIES STAY STRONG It was the battle of the generations at the auction of the ground floor, two-bedroom apartment at 4/52-54 Alexandra Parade, Maroochydore.

A retired couple who only recently relocated to the Coast after holidaying in the area over several years and a 40-something couple from Brisbane looking for a family holiday unit inched their way up by as low as $1000 bids to secure the perfect place in the tightly held complex.

Ray White agent Reuben Park said there were 10 registered bidders, all from Queensland.

The apartment was sold by a Sydney family who have fond memories of several generations holidaying at Alexandra Parade over almost 20 years.

The unit sold under the hammer for $834,000 to the younger couple.

Both of thefinal two bidders were stretched to just over their limits, but Mr Park said they saw the value in the location

“It just shows the social proof in auction; the ability for a buyer to look across and say, ‘well that must be what it is worth if someone else is prepared to pay it’,” Mr Park said. “And for the owner, it’s the peace of mind they have achieved the best price and knowing that there is not another dollar they could achieve out of the market.”

“The feel of that pocket is still sleepy, coastal village,” Mr Park added. Across the road is a beach entrance and a short stroll down the road to Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club.

Across the regional unit market the Sunshine Coast was second highest with a 31.1 per cent increase.

“Days on market and vendor discounting rates remain tight in many areas, reflecting strong buyer demand continuing to outweigh stock levels,” Ms Owen added.

The quickest selling region for houses was the Sunshine Coast. The median time on market over the 12 months to January 2022 was 15 days. For the same period one year ago, time on the market was 35 days.

Units have also seen a significant change in the market going from a median 41 days on the market for the period January 2021 to January 2022, down to 18 days on the market.

“Key drivers for performance in the regions will come down to higher interest rates and affordability constraints, the same headwinds capital city markets are facing,” Ms Owen said.

“Regions have an additional factor to contend with and that is the possibility of a return to ‘normality’ and what that means for a potential refocus on cities. Employers may make a return to physical office space a priority in the years ahead, which would necessitate buyers to reconsider housing options closer to a capital city.

“However, this scenario seems less likely and more long-term than the arrival of the Omicron variant, which in many ways reinforced that this an ongoing health crisis and Australians prioritised their current housing needs to align with their desired lifestyle.”

So last weekend was a mixed bag of fortunes, with waves lining up in certain spots, too straight in others then too big in other spots.

Nonetheless, some scored epic conditions. This weekend looks like a lot of fun, but will be a lot smaller.

I will be hopefully sending the next few surf reports from the snow in Canada.
