Obesity: it’s all in the

family Overweight grandparents are putting their grandchildren’s health at risk.

chool holidays can be a special time for extended families as children see their grandparents at gatherings or as part of child-care arrangements. Now, new research suggests the biology, environment and the food they share contributes to children’s future health.

According to the World Health Organisation, 39 million children under five years are overweight. Some 25 per cent of Australian children and adolescents are overweight or obese.

How parents contribute to their offspring’s obesity risk is well established, but the link between grandparents and grandchildren has been less clear. Our systematic review of studies involving more than 200,000 people around the world confirms obesity is transmitted across multiple generations of families. We still need to figure out why and how to break this cycle.

Obesity among children and adolescents is associated with developing health problems. These include high blood

pressure, cholesterol imbalance, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, accelerated growth and maturity, orthopaedic difficulties, psychosocial problems, increased risk of heart disease and premature mortality.

We examined the current global evidence on the association between grandparents who are overweight or obese and the healthy weight status of their grandchildren. We looked at 25 studies that involved 238,771 people from 17 countries.

The combined data confirms obesity is transmitted multigenerationally – not just from parent to child but also from grandparent to grandchild. We found children whose grandparents are obese or overweight are almost twice as likely to be obese or overweight compared to those whose grandparents are ‘normal’ weight.

NATURE AND NURTURE? Further research is needed into how children’s obesity status is influenced by their grandparents but there are likely two pathways at work. The influence could be indirect via parents’ genes or occur directly through the roles played by grandparents in children’s upbringing.

Let’s start with biological factors. Both egg and sperm cells contain molecules that respond to the nutritional intake of parents.

This means traits that are susceptible to high weight gain can be passed on from grandparents to parents and then to their grandchildren. And evidence shows genetics, environmental factors, lifestyle and eating habits all play key roles in predisposing individuals to obesity.

What we eat and feed our family members can lead to the expression of certain genetic traits (a term referred to as epigenetics) which can then be transferred to successive generations. Due to shared familial, genetic and environmental factors, obesity tends to aggregate in immediate families and studies have consistently reported an intergenerational transmission of obesity from parents to children.

Food intake can also influence health and biology across multiple generations.

In Sweden, a study reported adequate food for paternal grandparents at 10 years of age reduced heart disease and diabetes and increased longevity among their grandchildren.

FOOD AND FAMILY So, grandparents’ weight status and choices about what and how much is eaten in their home could influence their grandchildren’s weight directly or via the children’s parents.

These influences may be greater or less significant depending on the role

grandparents play as primary care givers or in shared living arrangements. According to the recent Australia’s Seniors’ survey, one in every four Australian grandparents provides primary care to their grandchildren.

Grandparents’ role as caregivers significantly affects children’s healthy eating knowledge, attitude and behaviours.

This might be seen in the meals shared, recipes passed down or special treats for loved ones. Such habits can add to childhood obesity risks, above and beyond genetic factors.

WORKING ON PREVENTION Our research shows the importance of including grandparents in obesity prevention strategies. In addition to parents, grandparents could be oriented to provide guidance on responsible feeding, recognising hunger and fullness, setting limits, offering healthy foods and using repeated exposure to promote acceptance.

They can help encourage regular exercise and discourage coercive feeding practices on their grandchildren.

While our study shows a multigenerational link in the transmission of obesity, most of the available evidence comes from high-income countries – predominantly America and European countries. More studies, especially from low-income countries, would be helpful.

Further investigation into the effect of grandparents on grandchildren’s obesity across different races and ethnicities is also needed. Grandparents have varied social and cultural roles in the upbringing of their grandchildren around the world. More data could help design effective obesity prevention programs that recognise the vital importance of grandparents.

o you know what your love language is? Miley Cyrus does. In 2020, the performer appeared on the Spotify podcast Call Her Daddy by Alex Cooper and revealed her love language is acts of service. “I hate gifts,” the singer said.

“They’re so embarrassing, I never know what to do with my face. But I like acts of service.”

For singer-songwriter Adele, words of affirmation will do the trick, and she’s not alone. According to Gary Chapman, who published the international bestseller The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate in 1992, surveys have shown words of affirmation are the most common primary love language – but only by a small margin.

Since the Baptist pastor from North Carolina first came up with the concept that most of us express and receive love primarily through one of five ‘love languages’, the book has gone on to sell more than 11 million copies in English, been translated into 49 languages and become a widely accepted way for people to more effectively relate to their loved ones. Mr Champan has written a number of spin-offs aimed at how we can use love languages with children or in the workplace, and the concept is now seen by many relationships counsellors as a legitimate way to improve relationships.

And, it’s not just pop psychology; it’s backed up by science. Lecturer in

psychology at the University of the Sunshine Coast Dr Rachael Sharman says the science stacks up.

“It’s such an unusual story and very deserving of its popularity,” says Dr Sharman. “It’s not the way science is meant to be done. This guy working at the coalface for about 20 years says, I reckon this is what’s going on. Normally people get into trouble and are called charlatans for that. But his work has been validated

“It does take two to tango,” says Dr Sharman. “You should be aware of what your partner’s love language is and where possible, attempt to compromise. And they should be aware of yours. You should

scientifically through factor analysis.

“He pretty much nailed it. It has been well researched since the book came out and has been found to come up trumps.

Even very po-faced scientists have accepted this is legit. It’s a great story because it so rarely happens.”

Now well known to millions, the five love languages are quality time, physical touch, acts of service, giving and receiving gifts, and words of affirmation. But while many of us have taken the quiz to work out what our own love language is, we may

also be aware of the shortcomings. If someone turns up with a really cruddy present on Christmas Day, it’s good to know you’re disappointed but it’s also good to reflect on it and say, ‘this is my love language but not theirs’.

Psychologist and relationships counsellor Suzanne Loubris of Leah Dique and Associates at Nambour introduces the love languages concept to all couples who come to her for counselling, as well as individuals who come to discuss their relationships. She

says many clients voluntarily bring the concept up during a session, because it has become so normalised.

“I think the love languages provide couples with a way in which to talk about their differences and learn to respect those,” Ms Loubris says. “To put words to what could be a cause of conflict. When they understand that it is an act of love to do something that is out of their character and they see how happy it makes their partner, then that might be worth it to them. It really creates understanding and reduces conflict.”

Not only that, but learning the love languages can also save your time and money. “No point buying them gifts when all they want to do is sit next to you on the couch,” Ms Loubris says. “No point sitting next to someone on the couch or giving them a massage when what they want is a cup of tea.

“The story I tell people to help them understand how the love languages works is the following: “When I stayed over at my partner’s house when he was working and I wasn’t I used to wake up early to make him a special yummy breakfast. It took me a while to realise that he didn’t like that at all. You see, my love languages are gifts and acts of service. So I got up early and made him a gift of breakfast. He had a very specific routine and breakfast that he had been sticking to for 40 years. I don’t like getting up early and I don’t eat breakfast, so when I worked out that I was myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY actually annoying him I thought it was hilarious and I continued to sleep late and not eat breakfast and he made his boring cereal and we were both happier.

“His love languages were quality time and touch. This meant that if I sat on the couch with my feet in his lap and he rubbed them, he was happy. I am an unusual woman in that I don’t really care for having my feet rubbed. But I do love attention and I loved making him happy.

One of the things that happened over time was the realisation that we liked sitting on different types of couches. So we proceeded to do so; no more foot rubbing.

I do believe that this put a subtle wedge between us.

“What you realise over time is that people show love with their own love language – and the other person is wondering why their partner doesn’t show them any love. One couple I encountered would check in with each other after having read the book. ‘How is your love tank doing?’ they would ask each other, and if one of them said they were feeling a deficit in love, then the other would do what was needed to fill their partner’s love tank. It might involve watching a movie on TV with them, even though they themselves were not fond of watching movies on TV. But they were fond of their partner and wanted to make them happy.”

It doesn’t take a scientist to work out relationships can be difficult, especially when you throw stresses like a mortgage and kids into the mix. With the added stress of COVID, lockdowns, job loss and illness over the past two years, our relationships have been placed under exceptional strain.

“When we look at some of the stats, roughly one-third of marriages will end in divorce and of the two-thirds that remain intact, about one-third of the those will say they are still madly in love with their partner 20 years later,” Dr Sharman says.

“It’s a significant minority.”

Today, we expect a lot more of our partners – we want a soul mate.

“The love marriage is very much a Western concept,” Dr Sharman says. “A number of cultures still do arranged marriages. Interestingly, they do very well. We think the reason for that is the parents know their children quite well; they are good at picking a partner who will be a good match. We think the love languages are a reason why arranged marriages work well, because parents have a good idea what their kids require in terms of self-esteem boosting.”

Whether we are a good match for

someone depends on more factors than most of us are aware of, so if the love languages can help along the way, it’s a good thing, according to Dr Sharman.

She cites the influence of HLA (human leukocyte antigens), an important genetic component of the human immune system, on human partnership and sexual satisfaction.

“It is to do with immune compatibility,” she says. “Some people smell really good to you and some people just smell foul. People who smell great to you, if you breed with them, the child will have better immune coverage. This is body chemistry; it’s very reptilian.”

She cites American psychologist Dr John Gottman, known for his ability to predict with a 90 per cent accuracy rate which couples will stay together and which will divorce.

“He talks about people who are looking for true love – their number one match – that there is a lot that needs to come together for that. The love languages need to be compatible, the smell has to be right, the look has to be right, the feel has to be right. When you add all that up and look at who’s available as a partner, love is hard to find.”

And if you’ve ever looked up your astrological compatibility with a potential partner, Dr Sharman says don’t waste your time.

“Astrology is complete bunkum,” she says. “Scientists have looked at relationship compatibility and star signs and compared them with the numbers of marriages and divorces and found absolutely no difference whatsoever between any of them.

“I think the love languages is one of the better ways to weigh up compatibility,” she says.

“Changing someone’s value system is very difficult. Changing their smell is impossible. Changing their immune factors is completely impossible. The love languages is a tool you can compromise on and chances are, you will find things you can compromise on.”

If you have ever asked yourself what the future will look like – then now is the time to visit the Sunshine Coast’s Regional Gallery, where Dystopia/ Utopia: 2070 presents a view of our world 50 years from now.

Curated by Artisan, a Queensland craft and design organisation, and toured with the assistance of the Australian Government’s Visions of Australian program, Dystopia/Utopia: 2070 is artists’ responses to future scenarios. Curator Kevin Wilson says the exhibition looks far into an uncertain future and features the works of seven artists, chosen for their willingness to push their practice into unknown realms. The exhibition is on show until March 20 at Caloundra Regional Gallery.

$500,000 Sunshine Coast community groups with great project ideas to make the region more active, vibrant, inclusive, resilient or creative are urged to apply for a Major Grant through Sunshine Coast Council’s Community Grants program. More than $500,000 in funding is up for grabs in the latest Major Grants round, which is now open. In the last council Major Grant round for this financial year, eligible not-for-profit organisations can receive up to $15,000 for projects, events and activities that provide community benefits. Grants up to $30,000 are also available for infrastructure projects that involve developing, maintaining or improving buildings or land that contribute to providing a safe, accessible and inclusive community facility. PET RESCUE MONTH The Petbarn Foundation is calling on Sunshine Coast residents to help save hundreds of pets from euthanasia by promoting adoption during Rescue Month this February. Each year postChristmas, there is an increase of pet surrenders in shelters and pounds, an issue now enlarged thanks to the housing crisis, and sadly resulting in a higher number of abandoned pets and a rise euthanasia rates. It is estimated more than 200,000 dogs are surrendered to shelters each year and up to 44,000 of those dogs and puppies are euthanised. REVIEW $10,000 FOR TWINNIES

A Landsborough set of twins passionate about helping sick and injured seabirds have received a $10,00 donation from the state government. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says she is impressed with the work of Bridgette and Paula Powers of Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue. “Their dedication and passion as wildlife conservationists is truly admirable, and their track record of voluntary work over so many years deserves our backing,” she says. “Our $10,000 contribution will hopefully inspire others to also support them and their mum Helen to help meet their running costs,” Ms Palaszczuk says. For more than 20 years, Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue has been caring for birds that have been injured or are sick.

73,000 Adventurous Sunshine Coast conservation scientist Professor Andy Marshall has gone out on a limb to help solve the question: how many tree species exist in the world? While crawling through thorny vines or trekking remote forests in storms, he’s also helped unearth amazing new species, including a ‘hot spot’ of yet-to-be discovered trees in northeast Australia. Professor Marshall, from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) Forest Research Institute, and almost 150 scientists spent years identifying trees both common and rare around the world. The answer to the question — about 73,000 species — was published in early February in US science journal PNAS. “It’s hugely exciting,” Professor Marshall says, who did most of his fieldwork in East Africa and Australia.

TURTLES SET FREE A pair of rehabilitated turtles has been released at Mooloolaba Beach, as conservation experts urge the community to help protect marine life. Green sea turtles Dasher and Blitzen re-entered the ocean in early February, with the help of SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium, Sunshine Coast Council and the Mooloolaba State School’s Environment Squad. The turtles were found extremely unwell suffering from “floating syndrome” just before Christmas and they spent the festive season at SEA LIFE. Dasher was discovered in the shallows of Mooloolaba Spit in December, while Blitzen washed up on Teewah Beach in November. They were taken to the Mooloolaba aquarium, and nursed back to health, munching on more than 500 grams of food per day.

The production was co-produced by Joel Burke, Beck Phillips and Khalid Tarabay and was well received by audiences, with several sold-out shows and standing ovations.

“We’re so delighted with the success of BIG – I can’t think of another ballet that has received a standing ovation in every performance,” Mr Phillips says. “It’s comforting to know audiences enjoy what we’re providing because we’re really pushing boundaries with ballet by incorporating our rock elements.

“I think the mix really excites audiences and has opened ballet up to an entirely different crowd.”

One of the many stars on stage was Juliet Doherty. With dancing in her blood and hundreds of pairs of worn pointe shoes in her wake, she is best known for her leading roles in High Strung: Free Dance and Driven to Dance on Netflix.

A fourth-generation dancer, she is a two-time gold medallist of the Youth America Grand Prix International Finals, and has been a featured artist at the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and Radio City Music Hall.

Ballet show a hit with local audiences A professional dancer and actress with a special connection to Queensland reflects on Ballet International Gala, a production that is set to change the arts scene into the future.

I

t began with a big dream to bring bite-sized pieces from some of the world’s well-known ballets to Australian shores.

Now, three boys from Brisbane are celebrating big success after the launch of Ballet International Gala (BIG), which came to Caloundra on February 5.

As part of BIG, a host of international dancers from Australia, America, England, Cuba and Kazakhstan, plus Brisbanebased rock trio Selfish Sons, performed seven shows at Brisbane’s QPAC in January before two special Sunshine Coast shows.

“It feels really special to be part of this production in particular, because it’s not only the first edition of BIG, but it’s the first production of its kind to bring this quality out to Brisbane [and the Sunshine

Coast] as well as mould all these different expressions of arts forms together.

“You quite rarely see rock music paired with ballet, so it’s that type of energy and just something brand new and so rare.

“It’s [had] such a good reception and just to hear how much everyone is enjoying it too just makes it feel incredibly worth it.

“To have that connection again, to be back into the theatre after such a long hiatus, to have everyone together in a room experiencing that moment together, it feels quite special.

“It’s a one-of-a-kind feeling, all the nerves and everything involved, but having to really be present in the moment and be connected to everyone in the audience that is giving you’re their full attention.”

She says it was extra special dancing in Queensland, the place her father was born and grew up in, and for her Australian family to see her on stage for the first time.

“It’s really special to be in Brisbane and the Sunny Coast performing.

“I even had my uncle and cousins in the audience for the first time.”

The 24-year-old, who has been dancing en pointe since she was nine and loves the ballet Romeo and Juliet, says a ballerinas can often go through a pair of shoes a night when dancing a lead role.

Billboards will be used to promote a new healthy eating campaign

ARE YOU ONE OF THE 32 PER CENT? CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO GET THE NATION EATING MORE VEGETABLES With alarmingly low levels of vegetable consumption on the Sunshine Coast (just 32 per cent of us eat vegetables daily) and more broadly across Australia, a national campaign has kicked off this month to encourage consumers to eat more vegies.

As part of the Better Than You

Remember campaign, developed by Health and Wellbeing Queensland and supported by Nutrition Australia and Outdoor Media Association (OMA), hundreds of billboards, public transport sites and bus shelters across Queensland and Australia will promote the message encouraging people to think differently

about how they consume vegetables.

Costing more than $3 million, the pro bono campaign aims to reignite the joy of vegies, increase vegetable consumption, and highlight the importance of health and boosting immunity.

Despite the significant health benefits of a vegetable-rich diet, including boosting the immune systems of people of all ages, according to the 2021 My Health for Life consumer survey, only eight per cent of Australian adults and five per cent of children are eating enough vegetables, making this campaign more important than ever.

Aimed at tackling obesity and other serious health issues including diabetes and heart disease, commuters will see billboards, public transport sites and bus shelters covered over the next four weeks with stunning campaign imagery of vegetables.

The campaign aligns with the OMA National Health and Wellbeing Policy, which restricts the advertising of discretionary food and drink products on signs within a 150-metre sightline of a school. The policy aims to meet community expectations and support government efforts to tackle obesity in Australia.

chief executive Dr Robyn Littlewood says she is delighted to be joining forces across sectors to get this message out in Brisbane, regional Queensland and all other states in Australia.

“Given the current environment, now more than ever, getting more vegies into your diet can actually help boost your health and wellbeing,” Dr Littlewood says.

“Vegetables are nutritional powerhouses that can also help us prevent and manage obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Vegies are food-as-medicine – they taste great, and they are easy to cook with.

“We know every town and city across Australia is experiencing different food supply chain issues, so we’re encouraging people to make the most of what is available and try different ways of cooking with vegies.”

“If you can’t get your tried and tested favourites, substitute with fresh, frozen or tinned vegies. They are all going to serve you well.”

The Better Than You Remember campaign also points people to a comprehensive website full of great vegetable recipes, tips on how to include them in your daily diet as well as comprehensive blogs and other great nutritional information.

ust three years after being recognised as Citizen of the Year in the 2019 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards, Caloundra resident Debra Knight has yet again been recognised for her selfless support of community members in need through her work at Gateway Care.

After more than 17 years providing support to thousands of families, Ms Knight was one of nine Sunshine Coast residents recognised in the recent Australia Day 2022 Honours list, receiving a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her service to community through charitable organisations.

“I feel so humbled and so honoured,” Ms Knight says. “I am always behind the scenes and I just do what I do. To think that someone has nominated me for this award

centre at Caloundra and we will help them with food. No one will walk out of Gateway without food in their trolley,” Ms Knight says. “What people can save at Gateway, they can use to take their children on an outing or pay a bill.”

Working with other charity organisations including SecondBite and Bidfood, as well as food donated by Coles, Woolworths and Aldi, Ms Knight says Gateway Care rescues one million tonnes of food each year.

“We source our bread and fruit and vegies from Coles, Woolies and Aldi and we source fresh fruit and vegetables from SecondBite. We also receive food from Lighthouse, and Bidfood are a big supporter of Gateway,” Ms Knight says.

“I am so grateful to each and every one of them.”

Not surprisingly, Ms Knight says since the onset of COVID-19, the demand for low-cost food has risen by 50 per cent, putting extra pressure on charities.

“It’s essential to double what we do to feed more families,” she says. “Sunshine Coast Council has very kindly donated a block of land at Currimundi for us to open a second store, but we need to raise $4 million to build the new facility.”

“Getting food … into the tummies of people doing it tough is the biggest reward” (RACK) initiative that allows people to purchase vouchers families can use toward much-needed groceries.

“A business might come in and donate $300; that goes to RACK and we can then distribute 10 $30 food vouchers to those who need them most,” Ms Knight says.

Describing her experience with Gateway as “a calling”, Ms Knight says what began as a one-day-a-week volunteer role almost two decades ago quickly grew into a full-time position at the helm of the organisation, a role she relishes in.

“I had just finished another job and I was looking for something different,” she

says. “Something was missing in my life.

I saw the advertisement looking for volunteers for Gateway, so I went and had a look and here I am 17 years later.

“It was exactly what I was looking for, which is helping people. Getting food on to tables and into the tummies of people doing it tough is the biggest reward.”

No stranger to doing it tough herself, Ms Knight says as a former single mum, she has always had empathy and compassion for those who need a hand.

“I know how people feel when they haven’t got a lot,” she says. “Hand up not hand out, that is what we are all about.”

In more recent times, Ms Knight has faced her own serious health battles, having been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two years ago. However, despite undergoing several operations and many rounds of chemotherapy, incredibly, she continued her work at Gateway Care.

“I still worked from my hospital bed; that was great therapy for me,” she says.

“When I had my chemo, if I felt well, I would go to work, no good sitting at home.

That’s how I cope with things.

“You must have a positive mind. The day I was diagnosed, I said to my husband and daughter ‘I have too much work to do on this earth to go anywhere’.”

LOCAL HEALTH SERVICE WELCOMES NEW INTERNS Sixty-six new medical interns have joined the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service workforce. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

T

he future of the region’s health workforce is continuing to strengthen with 66 new medical interns joining the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS).

SCHHS chief executive Dr Peter Gillies says the health service is proud to welcome the interns and support them through the provision of excellent clinical education and experience. “It’s greatly encouraging to have 66 junior doctors joining us in 2022. The application process is always competitive, and this year’s interns are of a very high calibre,” he says.

“These young doctors have already

spent years completing their undergraduate training, and are now entering a new and exciting – but demanding – period of their careers.

“The intern year is a very important one, when clinical management, communication and professional skills are consolidated under the close guidance and supervision of more senior colleagues. As hospital interns, they will be vital members of staff, helping to meet the ever-increasing demand for health services across the Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas.”

Kayla Scully is one of Griffith University’s Doctor of Medicine graduates joining SCHHS. She says she is excited to

be starting her medical career on the Sunshine Coast after completing two years of clinical placement at Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

“During my final years of medical school, I really got to know the staff and appreciate their commitment to learning and teaching, so I feel very fortunate to be working with them again.”

A budding haematologist, Ms Scully says growing up with a mother who had chronic health issues led to her interest in diseases and the human body.

“I originally graduated as a scientist and worked in a pathology laboratory, but I soon realised that I was only seeing one side of the coin,” she says. “I was missing out on engaging with and caring for patients on their illness journeys, and that was something incredibly important to me after seeing how doctors had helped my mother as a child.”

Griffith University Sunshine Coast and SCHHS academic lead and director of clinical training Jen Williams says starting as an intern is a landmark occasion in a doctor’s career.

“Many interns have dreamed of being a doctor since they were very young, and this month they reach that milestone and will finally be able to say to their patients ‘I’m the doctor looking after you’,” she says.

Assoc Prof Williams says interns must complete terms in general medicine, surgery and emergency medicine, as well as two or more elective placements in order to obtain general registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

Dr Gillies hopes the internships will inspire the cohort of junior doctors to continue working in the region. “I wish them all the best as they embark on this next chapter and start their first year as a medical professional,” he says.

SANCTUARY GROWS A little-known wildlife conservation site that has a significant affect on the Sunshine Coast environment is celebrating an expansion.

Curramore Wildlife Sanctuary, in The Blackall Range, has grown to almost 200 hectares after the title for a 26.1-hectare parcel of land was transferred to Australian Wildlife Conservancy. AWC has been working since early 2021 to secure the extra land for the sanctuary, to provide additional protection for the diversity of wildlife at the now 196.1-hectare site.

Curramore takes in an array of habitats including rainforest, tall eucalypt and grassy open forests.

AWC senior science communicator Joey Clarke says the expansion area will increase protection for threatened wildlife. He says it also connects Curramore to the road, which will provide better access for the AWC team to carry out weed control and conduct wildlife surveys.

More than 700 native species – such as koalas, gliders and birdwing butterflies – have been documented by AWC scientists since the sanctuary was first established in 2003.

SCHOOL SQUAD STANDS OUT AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS On the back of only three competitive swimming seasons, Sunshine Coast Grammar Swimming has firmly cemented its dominance in the pool at the recent 2021 Queensland Swimming Championships with an impressive top 10 result.

Since its establishment in 2018 under the direction of head coach Luke Stafford, Sunshine Coast Grammar Swimming has gone from strength to strength. It finished ninth overall at the championships, out of more than 100 clubs.

Thirty-one swimmers competed for the club, which fielded 36 relay teams and

achieved 135 personal best times over the week, hauling in 10 gold, 15 silver and 19 bronze medals throughout the competition.

Swimmers Ryan Bambach and Kael Thompson were the standout performers at the event, taking home 18 medals between them.

Mr Stafford says he is incredibly proud of each of the swimmers for their hard work, determination and willingness to succeed.

“These swimmers have certainly put in the hard yards and it’s great to see them reaping the rewards,” he says.

USC STUDENTS GET WORK Medical laboratory science students and graduates from the University of the Sunshine Coast are helping the pathology industry meet escalating demand during the latest COVID surge.

USC Associate Professor Dr Lin Fung, who co-ordinates the Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, says recent graduates and current students are picking up more part-time work processing COVID tests and other support roles in public and private laboratories.

“For the past few weeks, we have been very busy linking labs that require more staff because of the high demand for PCR testing to USC students and graduates seeking valuable industry experience,” Dr Fung says.

“Labs on the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane have welcomed the help in recruiting more part-time staff and the students are getting amazing experience and a foot in the door for ongoing employment.

“At the Pathology Queensland laboratory based at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, for example, we have at least five graduates working to assist the COVID testing effort.”

FUNDRAISER OFFERS NEW CHALLENGES FOR CLIMBERS With his annual trek forced to halt in 2020, he decided to climb Mount Coolum 42 times to reach the equivalent of 8848 metres, or the height of Everest.

He says after two successful years raising more than $25,000, it is time to up the ante for the event in April and raise more than $10,000 for Parkinson’s research – all before he heads back to Nepal to conquer Everest again in May. “It was time to up the challenge, this time completing roughly 2.5 times the height of Mount Everest,” he says. “Our goal is to help find a cure for Parkinson’s disease and we don’t expect that to easy.

“We will be climbing Mount Coolum, Mount Ngungun, Mount Cooroora and Mount Beerwah, just to name a few.”

There has never been a better reason to climb one of the region’s spectacular mountains than for a growing local charity event brought on by border closures.

This year, the annual Trek for Parkinson’s will include four Coast peaks to raise money for Australia’s second most common neurological disease.

Organiser, trekker and allied health assistant Gary McKitterick-Gillett (pictured), has previously climbed Mount Everest to raise money for Shake it Up Australia Foundation.

Having seen firsthand the effects of the disease through his role in the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, Mr McKitterick-Gillett has long been passionate about supporting research.

FEDERAL FUNDING BOOST HELPS COAST PROJECTS Motorists and riders can now enjoy a smoother and safer journey around the region after 16 locations in the Sunshine Coast underwent vital upgrades.

Funding from the federal government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program phase two has helped Sunshine Coast Council deliver road, cycle and pedestrian pathway upgrades.

As part of $22 million committed to the region for priority projects, the council has received $11 million in funding for these vital road upgrades.

“A variety of priority roads and

pathways have been completed from Maleny, Palmwoods and Mooloolah Valley to Buderim and Mudjimba further north,” transport portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski says.

“Road resurfacing works have also wrapped up in Landsborough on a gravel section of road along Railway Street, and resealing Old Gympie Road between Coonowrin and Sahara Roads will soon be completed.

“The majority of the projects have been completed, with a couple of upgrades anticipated to be finished by mid-2022.”

As part of the works, a $3.5 million gravel road upgrade for two kilometres of Zgrajewski Road at Yandina Creek started in early January 2022.

Cr Baberowski says an alternative route will be available via YandinaCoolum Road for through traffic and nearby residents outside the project site.

He says the final stage of $2.4 million Citrus Road in Eudlo is also nearing completion after work began in August 2021, and the coastal pathway between Bokarina and Warana is expected to be completed in early 2022, weather permitting.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace says these Commonwealthfunded projects have come at a

critical time for jobs in the region.

“Not only are these federally funded infrastructure projects improving road safety and getting locals home sooner, they are also supporting vital jobs, construction businesses and economic growth across the Sunshine Coast at a time when we

need it the most,” Mr Wallace says.

Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien says the $11 million federal funding boost is already having an enormous effect on the lives of residents.

POLICE TALK Highway Patrol Sunshine Coast reminds P-platers to drive safely. So far in 2022 we have seen two fatal crashes involving young drivers on Sunshine Coast roads and it has Senior Sergeant Shane Panoho, Officer-in-Charge, Highway

Patrol Sunshine Coast very concerned about our P-platers on our roads.

Snr Sgt Panoho has commenced a Provisional Drivers Action Plan on the Sunshine Coast with the intent to increase education and enforcement in a driver class where their risk of a serious crash is six times higher than other drivers. In the past week Highway Patrol Sunshine Coast has conducted 62 random drug tests with eight drivers testing positive for a relevant drug – three out of these eight drivers were P-platers.

Parents of P-plates are strongly encouraged to remain actively involved in educating their young drivers and there are plenty of tips and advice on the StreetSmarts website.

Some tips for P-platers include: • Noisy mates: Encourage your P-plater to be up-front with their friends about needing some quiet while driving.

Assigning jobs to passengers can help them focus and help the driver.

• Night driving: If your P-plater is not

comfortable driving at night then try to do more hours together. Statistics show that the later it gets, the riskier it becomes for P-platers.

• Rainy days: Demonstrate safe driving to your P-plater by slowing down in the rain and leave extra distance between vehicles. Have the conversation as to why this is important and that if they encounter heavy rain it is okay to find a safe place to pull over and wait for the rain to pass.

• Be positive: Encourage your P-plater and try to avoid criticism. Use examples on the road around you to discuss other drivers’ actions.

• Keeping to a zero BAC: It is important to remember that Learner, P1 and P2 licence holders must have a blood alcohol level of 0.00 when driving.

Make sure they have a plan in place if they intend on having a couple of drinks.

Over the coming weeks the Highway Patrol Sunshine Coast is going to actively engage with P-plate drivers and reinforce safe driving behaviours so remember to stay safe on our roads.

Since being established in 2018, Coolum Beach Walking Football is growing in numbers. Walking Football is a modified version of association football (soccer) with small-sided games, no tackling and no running. EUMUNDI KENILWORTH ROAD PROJECT UPDATE A $2.9 million rehabilitation project on Eumundi Kenilworth Road will now be conducted in two stages. Interestingly, as I searched for the YouTube clip, I also discovered that David Byrne (from American rock band Talking Heads) has founded a whole website called Reasons to be Cheerful that is packed with well-researched stories to inspire us to approach everything with more curiosity and hopefulness. So, regardless of when you were born, let’s come together to seek the silver lining and re-imagine 2022, and beyond!

In continuing this positive theme, Healthy Sunshine Coast is council’s flagship health and wellbeing program and provides opportunities to participate in low-cost health and wellbeing sessions on a regular basis.

The aim is to support our community to engage in the pillars of health and wellbeing by adopting lifestyle choices that will enhance the quality of their lives. Jane Stephens says we can all be guilty of careless driving and the recent crash involving two Mooloolah women is a wake-up call.

After Ash Barty’s brilliant Australian Open win, Ashley Robinson has been thinking about how we can create a more inclusive nation.

S

ee the driver of that car next to you at the lights? Yes – that one. The bloke in the ute, dressed in high-vis. He was talking to his passenger mate and changed lanes back there without indicating. Makes your blood boil, doesn’t it?

But what about the one you didn’t see yesterday – that P-plater who came out of nowhere? You had to brake hard because you might have been going a little loose and fast on the rat run to work.

Where visual, physical or cognitive distractions are concerned, we can be both the goodie and the baddie on the roads.

None of us is lily white.

Two young women attended Maroochydore Magistrates Court last week to witness the sentencing of the driver who almost killed them. Charlie Harris and Harlee Henderson, both 20 and from Mooloolah Valley, were in a sedan that was crushed by a 24-tonne crane truck on the wrong side of the road at Ilkley last March.

The driver, Russell Leslie Curtis, didn’t mean for it to happen. His attention had faded and the result was horrific. The women sustained critical injuries and Harlee’s soon-to-be-born son died. They

lost their jobs because they couldn’t work.

Their pain and suffering continues. The truck driver was naturally devastated, sorry for not taking more care and accepting of responsibility for changing so many lives.

He was fined and lost his licence and therefore his job.

While crashes as catastrophic as this one are mercifully rare, distractions and inattention brings us close far more often than any annual report will show.

Queensland Transport says that on average, 29 people are killed and 1284 are seriously injured each year on state roads as a result of crashes where driver inattention played a part.

Doling out penalties is one thing, but surely the crane versus car case is a wake-up call for us all. We need to see a driver’s licence as far more than just our ticket to get behind the wheel. It is a commitment that when you are in charge of a vehicle, you will do just one job: drive it. It is a promise to other road users that you will drive within the rules.

was walking George the other night and I had this weird feeling I was back on holidays in Fiji as I was reminded by this eerie feeling that everyone was watching the same thing on TV. In Fiji it was a rugby test match – Fiji versus Ireland – and the whole resort I was staying in came to a standstill while the staff watched the footy. The other night was the same as nearly every house I walked past had the same thing on their TV: Ash Barty and her record-making win in the Australian Open. What a proud nation we were seeing that humble dynamo get what she deserved on home soil. Then to see her with Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Cathy Freeman made us feel even prouder, if that was possible – three woman who have achieved amazing sporting achievements, possibly now the three most impressive female athletes in the history of our country, all Indigenous!

So rugby in Fiji stops a nation and Ash Barty stopped ours the other night, which is awesome. But only a few days before that there was the polarising debate about Australia Day and whether the date should be changed. I am not sure what the answer

to that is. I probably would change it if I was in charge (scary, I know) but I am absolutely certain we should be changing the flag and the anthem.

If I never see another 4x4 with a massive flag and Bundy stickers doing laps on Australia Day it still will be too soon.

Surely we can change the flag to acknowledge the traditional owners of this wonderful country. If we look across the ditch at our Kiwi cousins they do three things far better than us – rugby, kayaking and inclusion of the traditional owners.

We could have a national competition to design a new flag, which would probably be a good thing for our nation coming out of COVID, something to uplift a nation and heal some wounds.

Now that might take a while and there would be plenty of debate but in my opinion the anthem is a whole lot easier.

We already have one, or at least half a one if we were to extract some verse from I Am Australian. Google the lyrics. There is plenty of material there. It’s all there and then just add some verses from the traditional owners and away you go. “I am, you are, we are Australian.” All of us.

He managed Delta Goodrem and the Little River Band, but his greatest passion was always his family. Seeing Glenn with his powerhouse wife Gaynor had a special magic to it.

I work with a bloke called Todd, who I have only ever heard lost for words once in my life. It was the day he met Glenn Wheatley: his hero. There was a knock on my front door while we were having a secret meeting with our potential new boss and I opened the door to see Mr Wheatley standing there, clutching beers and bubbles and lunch with a huge grin on his face.

Over the next two hours while we ate lunch, Toddy just kept repeating to me, right in front of Glenn, “Hey lady, Glenn Wheatley’s here. In your house”. Any doubts we had about leaving our old radio home of 10 years were obliterated over that lunch.

The charm, the warmth, the sheer charisma of Glenn Wheatley was all very real, none of it forced. He was the bona fide genuine article and the greatest man I have ever worked for. Rock on Glenn Wheatley. We are all the better for knowing you.

lenn Wheatley was a true gentleman and a right royal rascal who walked to the beat of his own drum. That’s why his death is so sad, because they just don’t make them like him anymore.

The music and radio industry icon was my boss, my friend, a doting husband and father, and will be missed by so many people. We lost Glenn last week due to complications with COVID. I have worked in the media for close to 30 years and he was legendary, so I was a little star struck, and a lot excited, when he bought part of the radio station where I work. Everyone who met the 74-year-old adored him because he made you feel as though you were the most special person in the room.

I am pretty sure Glenn was very rich, but you loved him for who he was and how he treated you, and not for the possessions he had. He was a little like Willy Wonka and he would walk the halls of Mix FM radio station with a twinkle in his eye looking for a spot of mischief.

He brought legitimate rock’n’roll to the Sunshine Coast as his credentials were so amazing and he was of course the manager of John Farnham. Glenn

eputy Nationals leader David Littleproud says some members of his party think Barnaby Joyce is “too close” to the Prime Minister, despite the leaking of critical texts.

The deputy prime minister has come back into the spotlight after his personal texts called the prime minister “a hypocrite and a liar”.

Mr Joyce has indicated his private views about Scott Morrison have become more positive since he became deputy prime minister.

The Nationals leader, who apologised to Mr Morrison in the wake of the texts emerging, said he had never worked one-on-one with the prime minister at the time the texts were sent to former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins in March 2021.

“Working one-on-one with him is a completely different scenario, I know him vastly better now,” Mr Joyce told the Seven Network on Monday.

Mr Littleproud says the Nationals maintain a “transactional” relationship with the government and if anything, Mr Joyce has become “too close” to Mr Morrison. “I can honestly say that the relationship between Barnaby and Scott Morrison is close and in fact some Nats say it is too close,” he told the ABC. The leaked text messages were sent when Mr Joyce was still a government backbencher.

After the texts emerged, Mr Joyce offered to resign as deputy prime minister,

but Mr Morrison indicated he had forgiven his deputy for the remarks.

Mr Littleproud says Mr Joyce shouldn’t offer his resignation to the Nationals party room when it meets on Monday but “robust” discussions would be had about the ordeal.

“Now the deputy prime minister will obviously come in and give us an explanation and set the record straight, but there is no mood for any change,” he said.

“We all go through times in our lives where we are in a darker space because it hasn’t gone our way, but what I would say is that Barnaby is now part of a cohesive team that is delivering for our country.”

The man Mr Joyce replaced as Nationals leader, Michael McCormack, said Mr Joyce had some explaining to do over the leaked texts and indicated he would consider putting his hand up for the leadership if it came up again.

“If enough members of the party came to me and asked me to lead the party, I would seriously consider that,” he told the ABC. –AAP

Jack currently lives at home with his family and wants to move out. Jack, and his family, had a range of questions.

However, most centred around one aspect: what is SIL? And how can it assist Jack?

SIL stands for supported independent living and is considered support to assist you in your daily tasks so you can live as independently as possible, while building your skills. It is most commonly used in shared living arrangements.

Let’s look at an example of what Real Community Service’s SIL could do for Jack.

RCS’s SIL service is centred around Jack’s ability to live independently. We

would work with Jack to learn practical skills to better manage his home environment and relationships with his house mates. Our team of staff would work with Jack to ensure he is becoming as independent as possible. We would empower Jack through informed decision making, promote dignity of choice and always encourage Jack to build his independence. We would support Jack to become a young man, living with friends and enjoying all the experiences that brings.

PIVOTING TO SELL SUCCESSFULLY IN A PANDEMIC As COVID cases on the Coast skyrocket, real estate agents have had to be flexible, but that doesn’t mean they’re not still selling. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

A

rranging property inspections during the COVID-19 Omicron wave is presenting challenges for Coast real estate agents, forcing them to pivot in ways they could never have foreseen a few years ago.

Digital connections, video inspections and electronic settlements have come to the fore. But on the ground, careful inspection planning has also come into play.

“For our inspections everyone is spaced out, QR-coded and hand sanitised, along with Glen 20 spray and Pine O

Clean wipes – you name it, the lot,” Home Sunshine Coast principal Kate Jewry says.

It has been problematic, says Ms Jewry, when a vendor or a property tenant reports COVID symptoms or a positive test result.

“We have had offers made subject to a satisfactory inspection when we can get people through,” Ms Jewry says.

Define Property principal Ross Cattle acknowledges his team have had to rethink the inspection process.

“We have had some buyers wanting to look through and then tenants have been

waiting for a [test] result, so we have had to postpone the viewing,” he says.

“We have always had videos of the properties but people, particularly locals, like to touch and feel and look around.

“As we respect this is a serious matter, we have postponed inspections and just waited.

“There has been a couple of houses where the residents have COVID, so we have had to wait seven or eight days for negative test results to come through and then done the inspections after that.”

Mr Cattle says this cautious approach hasn’t jeopardised any of his sales. His experience is that buyers, owners and tenants have all been understanding.

It appears the Coast has become conditioned to the changed selling environment.

“I don’t think people are using it as an excuse to stop inspections or anything like that,” he adds. “It’s been quite respectful from everybody.”

“It’s just like when we pivoted back in 2019 when COVID first hit and things had to change,” Ms Jewry says. “We have kind of pivoted back now that the Coast is experiencing its real wave.”

f you want a four-bedroom home in Mountain Creek, you are paying the best part of a million dollars,” Ray White auctioneer and agent James Goldsworthy said. On Saturday he sold the four-bedroom home at 2 Haddys Close in Mountain Creek under the hammer for $1.025 million.

“It’s further proof that the new norm, or the new entry level price for Mountain Creek is circa $1 million,” Mr Goldsworthy added. “There have probably been about six sales around that level in the area; that is the norm now.”

He said in Mountain Creek there are very few of the traditional, solid family homes in a quiet street and in close proximity to the shops and schools that come up for sale.

The auction attracted 13 registered bidders – most from the Coast, some Brisbane relocators, a Tasmanian relocator and an investor from Hong Kong.

“We have seen some investors looking for those bigger blocks in and around Buderim, Mountain Creek and Mooloolaba, who are looking long, long term,” Mr Goldsworthy said. “They see what is happening to the Coast and they see value.

The rental prices have increased dramatically as well, so they are stacking up as good little investments.”

The five-bedroom home at 301 Hunchy Road in Hunchy is a reflection of the area that owners treasure and very rarely sell.

“Most of these properties are tightly held,” listing agent David Gaskin from Century 21 said. “There’s a good old saying in this area that you only leave in a box.”

“These properties don’t come around too often. I think that helped with the price as well as people realised these places are unique, they are not a dime a dozen. And having homes that are circa 1920s; they are homes that you can’t replace today.”

It’s been 40 years since the 1920s home has been on the market. The home’s history, the 30 acres of private property with views out to Flaxton and Mapleton and its overall presentation made it a very special sale.

The four registered bidders were all from south-east Queensland. They started bidding at $1.1 million for the deceased estate property. It was then steady bidding between three of the bidders before it “got down to a bidding war between the last two” Mr Gaskin said. The property finally sold under the hammer for $1.520 million.

“It was very strong bidding from one party while the other party finally realised they were not going to give up on it and all they were doing was pushing the other party up higher,” he added.

The buyers are a young family from Brisbane who plan to use the home for holidays before moving to the Coast.

ON THE MONEY IN BUDERIM Tucked away in a cul-de-sac on the lower side of Buderim, the four-bedroom home at 29 Hardwood Court attracted 72 group inspections prior to auction.

Listing agent Fiona Rawson from Ray White said the deceased estate property was styled by Liane Jacobs of Showcase Property Styling which Ms Rawson believed made all the difference to its presentation.

“We had four offers within the first 10 days of the property going on the market,” she said.

At the Saturday auction bidding started at $800,000 clearly knocking out two of the younger bidders right from the start. It was then down to two buyer’s agents on the phone with their clients – one from Sydney and the other from northern Queensland, who went head-to-head. The bidding was

“A lot of similar size homes in Buderim on big blocks are selling well over the $1 million mark,” Ms Rawson said. “It wasn’t a crazy price. It wasn’t a low price either. I felt it was on the money.”

BUYING CLOSE TO THE SOCIAL ACTION Extensively renovated, the three-bedroom waterfront Marrakesh residential complex apartment at 12/84 Duporth Avenue in Maroochydore attracted six registered bidders for the Saturday auction.

Listing agent Scott Henshaw of Define Property said the attractions for residents of this part of Maroochydore are walking distance to everything from restaurants to shopping centres, and the waterfront river view across to Pincushion Island.

“Most of the bidders we had were downsizers, Mr Henshaw said. “Ironically, the winning bidder was a young girl; a single schoolteacher.”

The apartment sold under the hammer for $1.316 million.
