Our feature story looks at the big picture and identifies chief issues concerning us at a societal level, the ones we hope to improve on, not only for ourselves, but for future generations. In some of the identified issues, you may note

improvements from past years, in others, well, sadly not. However, things will never change if we bury our heads in the sand. It’s information, awareness and innovative ideas that herald new ways of thinking and the opportunity of building better living conditions.

Two anti-virus treatments

approved Australia has approved new medicines in the fight against COVID. We find out how you get them and how effective they are.

Nirmatrelvir stops the function of a key protein the virus needs to replicate itself, while ritonavir is there to stop the body from breaking down nirmatrelvir.

According to clinical trial data, Lagevrio and Paxlovid are useful in reducing viral load, the severity of COVID symptoms, and thus, the number of people hospitalised and/or dying from the virus.

Many of Omicron’s concerning mutations are on the ‘spike protein’, which is what the coronavirus uses to enter our cells. So one reason these drugs are still expected to be effective against variants like Omicron is they don’t target the spike protein.

In the last two weeks, Pfizer published a media release detailing preliminary results suggesting Paxlovid is still effective against the Omicron variant. The results of two laboratory studies by Pfizer researchers and released as pre-prints (yet to be reviewed by other scientists) shows nirmatrelvir can interrupt viral replication across all COVID variants of concern.

One independent lab-based study released online as a pre-print looked at both Pfizer and Merck’s drugs. It found nirmatrelvir is still active against its protein target in Omicron, and can still reduce overall viral load. The study also found Merck’s Lagevrio showed activity against

n the past two weeks, health minister Greg Hunt announced Australia’s drug regulator had provisionally approved two new medicines for the treatment of COVID. These are Lagevrio, made by American pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp & Dohme, and Paxlovid by Pfizer.

With the number of hospitalisations and deaths due to the virus continuing to rise, the approval of these drugs comes at a good time. The federal government has purchased a combined 800,000 courses of the pills, and says the drugs will initially be prioritised for the elderly and other high-risk groups. Both companies say their drugs will work against the Omicron variant, though this is based on preliminary lab-based research.

Lagevrio (generic name: molnupiravir) is an antiviral drug that causes errors to be copied into the COVID virus whenever it replicates. This makes the virus less effective in causing disease. Pfizer’s Paxlovid is a two-tablet combination of a new drug called nirmatrelvir, and a drug already used to treat HIV called ritonavir.

Omicron. The president of Merck Research Laboratories says the company is very confident Lagevrio will be effective against Omicron.

It’s important to note this research was undetaken in a lab, so we’re yet to see data on how effective it is in real-world conditions. With both drugs approved in the US and United Kingdom earlier than Australia, it’s likely we’ll see in-person outcomes data on the effectiveness and safety of these drugs in the near future.

In clinical trials before Omicron emerged, Paxlovid reduced the risk of hospitalisation and death by 88 per cent in high-risk patients, and Lagevrio by 31 per cent.

It’s important to note no medicine is perfectly safe. From clinical trials so far, we know fewer than seven per cent of patients taking Lagevrio experienced a serious side effect. Commonly reported were diarrhoea, nausea and dizziness.

Different side effects were observed with Paxlovid, such as vomiting, diarrhoea and headache, and fewer than two per cent of patients in the trials experienced a serious side effect. The risk of side effects with Paxlovid can be higher if patients are also taking other medicines. The list of medications that shouldn’t be taken with Paxlovid includes some anti-cancer,

anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular medications, and even herbal medicines.

Vulnerable people such as the elderly and aged-care residents will be prioritised for access to the medication. The government hasn’t stated when it expects other groups may be able to get the medicines, possibly due to the limited number of courses the government has purchased and because of supply difficulties experienced in other countries.

Lagevrio and Paxlovid are oral tablets, which may mean you’ll be able take these at home. For both drugs, the tablets must be commenced as soon as possible and within five days of the first symptoms for them to be of any use. Both medicines have also been approved for use only in adults.

There’s no clinical trial data on the safety of Lagevrio or Paxlovid in children so we don’t know how effective and safe they would be in this age group.

There’s also uncertainty as to the potential impact either medicine may have on pregnancy and breastfeeding, so the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) advises patients avoid these medicines in these circumstances. The TGA also recommends avoiding becoming pregnant soon after the use of either medicine.

We don’t yet know whether people can obtain a prescription from any general practitioner or whether only specific doctors will be able to prescribe them.

The government says the first deliveries of these medicines will arrive “over the coming weeks”, and both medicines will be free for patients.

Despite the promising treatment opportunity these drugs provide in the fight against COVID, vaccination will still remain the front line of defence against the virus.

The big issues in 2022 COVID-19 may be top of the list when it comes to the nation’s biggest concerns right now, but recent studies reveal climate change, housing affordability and the economy are also high on the agenda. My Weekly Preview shines the spotlight on some of the biggest issues facing Australians in 2022. WORDS: Ingrid Nelson

I

t’s no secret that 2021 was a year most of us were glad to say goodbye to, and while we are still living with the daily challenges of a global pandemic, most of us are hopeful of a better year ahead as borders reopen and we continue to reach target vaccination rates.

So, what are the main issues that continue to concern us as we forge ahead into a new year?

COVID-19 Not surprisingly, COVID-19 and the knock-on effects its arrival has had on just about every aspect of our daily lives remains the number one talking point.

According to new, in-depth research exploring the top concerns of Australians, the pandemic claims the unenviable number one position, with the environment a close second.

Roy Morgan chief executive officer Michele Levine says in late 2021 the COVID-19 pandemic and issues surrounding climate change and global warming were the dominant issues.

“Over 60 per cent of Australians say

one of these issues is the biggest problem facing Australia and even more, 63 per cent, say these issues are the biggest problems facing the world,” Ms Levine says.

Interestingly, for the first time, COVID-19 is also the most important national issue according to our young people, rising from second place in 2020 (38.8 per cent) to the top spot in 2021 (45.7 per cent).

Survey responses reveal the pandemic and associated public health responses had a negative effect on young people’s health, wellbeing and education in 2021.

Mission Australia’s CEO James Toomey says young people are showing they’re aware of and care about social and personal issues affecting themselves, their peers and their country.

“Listening to and acting on these crucial insights has always been vital and is now more pressing than ever as we round out our second year of COVID-19 pandemic challenges,” Mr Toomey says.

On a local level, the pandemic is an ongoing issue that continues to take its toll on all of us. However, we can be proud of the incredible resilience the Sunshine Coast community has shown.

And while there is not a great deal we can do to alleviate the global uncertainties, there are things we can do to stay positive and help each other

“There is a lot going on in the world …and a lot of uncertainty, which can make us feel overwhelmed” as we continue to navigate these unprecedented times.

USC professor of clinical psychology Helen Stallman says the key to dealing with the anxiety and tension triggered

by COVID-19 and other stressors is to recognise when you are stressed, and reach out to your network of family,

friends and professionals when things get tough.

“There is a lot going on in the world at the moment and also a lot of uncertainty, which can make us feel overwhelmed,” Prof Stallman says.

“People have very real stressors in terms of getting sick – employment concerns, housing. All those things can lead to stress and unpleasant emotions.

“When we get upset, our brains don’t think very clearly and we tend to just react and often turn to unhealthy coping strategies such as overeating, getting angry at those around us or turning to alcohol.”

USC has developed My Coping Plan, a free app designed for anyone wanting to improve their responses to unpleasant emotions. “The app takes you through things you can do in your head, such as relaxation and distraction strategies, it prompts you to put in the names of contacts of those supporting you and list any health professionals that can support you if you are still not feeling better.

CLIMATE CHANGE If the hot, dry conditions that fuelled the deadly bushfires that scorched Australia in 2019-2020 taught us anything, it’s the importance of ramping up emissions cuts and embracing Australia’s enviable renewable energy potential.

More than 450 Australians were killed during the fires that covered three of Australia’s major cities, including Brisbane. The fires burnt more than 18 million hectares of land, destroyed 3113 homes and killed three billion animals.

Regarded by 24 per cent of Australians as the biggest problem facing the country today, the environment, dominated by issues surrounding global warming and climate change, are set to be key issues for voters in early 2022.

Former fire commissioner Greg Mullins has been fighting fires for 50 years and features in a recent documentary about what is colloquially known as the Black Summer (called Burning). He says the hot, dry conditions that fuelled the deadly fires will continue to worsen without substantial, concerted action to rapidly phase out coal, oil and gas.

“Climate action is about creating a future where our children and grandchildren can be safe and prosper,” Mr Mullins says.

“That’s what I hope this film brings home for Australians, and all people who vote, as we head towards a federal election where action on climate change must be the top issue.”

HOUSING AFFORDABILITY You only have to consider the dramatic increase in house prices across Australia during the past 18 months to understand why housing affordability is one of the fastest rising national concerns.

A recent survey by Ipsos research monitor revealed in January last year only 15 per cent of those surveyed rated housing among their top three concerns.

However, by November, that figure had

reached 34 per cent. Nationally, property values have grown 22 per cent in a year, with record low interest rates fuelling the property frenzy.

Values rose 25.8 per cent in Sydney, followed by Brisbane (25.1 per cent), Canberra (24.5 per cent), Adelaide (21.4 per cent), Darwin (16.7 per cent), Melbourne (16.3 per cent) and Perth (14.5 per cent). And it doesn’t look like things are going to slow down any time soon, with the NAB forecasting a 4.9 per cent lift in property values in 2022.

Thanks to COVID-19, a huge influx of our cashed-up southern neighbours have flocked to Queensland and the Sunshine Coast as lifestyle becomes more important than ever. Ninety two per cent of Queensland suburbs experienced house prices rises annually, and the biggest winners are on the Sunshine Coast, with 83 per cent of suburbs scoring double-digit annual house price growth.

ECONOMY AND JOB SECURITY The economic outlook for 2022 will clearly be dictated by COVID-19, and from what we have learnt over the past two years, it clearly runs its own race.

Factors such as the potential for fresh virus outbreaks, the potential for new variants and vaccination rates will all play a part in determining what lies ahead for our economy, both nationally and locally.

While previous lockdowns were disastrous for business owners, they now face the new challenges of staff and supply chain shortages as the borders open and COVID-19 continues to affect a record number of workers, leaving them critically short staffed.

But it’s not all doom and gloom – Commonwealth Bank Group economists expect the Australian economy to grow by 4.4 per cent in 2022, while inflation is expected to hold. The unemployment rate is now the second lowest it’s been in 13 years, at 4.6 per cent, after a record 366,100 jobs were added in November.

How can we stay positive during these uncertain times? The Black Dog Institute has these top tips: • Continue to look for balance where possible. Plan to include achievement, connection and pleasurable activities into every day, even in small ways.

• Channel uncomfortable energy into action or kindness and assistance of others.

• Acknowledge the difficulties of this time but practise gratitude too where you’re able.

• Rely on reputable news and information.

• Limit or try to prevent engaging in behaviours that feed your feelings of distress or anxiety.

• Stay focused on the present, on what you can control, rather than speculating about an unpredictable future.

• Notice the thoughts and emotions you experience (as well as the triggers for these) but don’t surrender to them.

• Look after your body (through sleep, diet, exercise, and limiting use of drugs and alcohol).

• Stay connected with others.

• Remember to focus on breathing when feeling stressed.

• If you’re feeling like you’re not coping, get professional advice.

$24 MILLION NRL SEASON KICKS OFF

JYNX HOUSE AMPLIFIED TO GO AHEAD The Jynx House Amplified is set to go ahead this month after being forced to postpone its 2021 event. The festival is run by two young local Sunshine Coast men and includes a line-up of local artists along with major headline acts like Brisbane-based The Jungle Giants (pictured). The event will be held on February 12 at Coolum Football Club and aims to push boundaries and innovate the party scene, bringing all-new experiences and live music direct to the region. “Jynx for the people, by the people,” a statement from festival organisers reads. “So, we are here to bring the fans what they want and how they want it.” It’s hoped Jynx will become a regular local event and bring a variety of events, festivals, club takeovers and parties to the Sunshine Coast. The Vodafone Warriors will kick off their NRL campaign with a home game at Sunshine Coast Stadium in Round 1 of the Telstra Premiership. The Warriors will take on the St George Illawarra Dragons in a Saturday afternoon clash on March 12 at 4.30pm. The Round 1 clash will be the first time the Vodafone Warriors have been the home team at Sunshine Coast Stadium, having previously played there twice as the away team. SNAKES ALIVE! Sunshine Coast residents are being warned to keep an eye out for baby snakes this hatching season.

Swarms of the tiny creatures are being spotted around the region, either slithering through backyards or in some ‘impossible’ small crevices in cars and homes. Stuart McKenzie, from Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers, says recently hatched baby snakes are more likely to sneak under doors or through window cracks because of their small size. TOP AWARD FOR NURSING GRADUATE A young Sunshine Coast woman, inspired to help others by her own experience with a serious disease, has received a prestigious education award.

Diploma of Nursing graduate Tanya Armstrong was acknowledged as the Sunshine Coast Student of the Year, by TAFE Queensland. The award recognises her academic achievement, motivation, teamwork, extra-curricular commitments and aspirations. It was her personal experience with the healthcare system that drove her to take her passion to the next level, after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) at 20. “I experienced first-hand what a positive difference simple things such as a warm smile and friendly voice can have on someone when they in a truly terrifying and uncertain time in their life,” Ms Armstrong says. “When I first enrolled, I wanted to become a nurse that specialises in MS, so that I could help others in a similar way to how I have been helped and continue to be helped along my own health journey. But that goal has changed and now I just want to be able to make a positive lasting difference to the people I care for, regardless of what specific position or role I have as a nurse.”

Construction has started on major safety improvements to reduce crashes along Steve Irwin Way between Beerwah and Landsborough.

The works are part of a $24-million project funded by the federal and state governments on an 80:20 basis. Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt says early works began in November last year. “Not only will we be widening the road between Beerwah and Landsborough, but we will be installing dedicated, right-turn lanes at Isambert Road, Graham Drive and the warehouse north of Irwin Road,” Mr Hunt says. “The new traffic signals at the Fraser Road intersection will also allow for safer turns.

Sunshine Coast-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue crews flew a record number of lifesaving missions in 2021. The team was tasked on 551 critical missions, compared to 502 in 2020. Those airlifts are valued at $13.7 million and saw the crews spend more than 750 hours in the air. RACQ LifeFlight Rescue General Manager of Operations, Brian Guthrie, says the milestone highlights how important their work is.

“We operate 365 days a year, 24/7, and we’re always ready for action, ensuring we can get critical medical care to people in need, as quickly as possible,” Mr Guthrie says. The crews were called to missions including almost 100 vehicle incidents and 16 searches.

SEA LIFE STUDY While the beach is a popular place for university students during the summer holidays, for some it has been more about research than recreation. University of the Sunshine Coast students have been watching birds and other vertebrates (animals with a backbone) on Queensland’s beaches. Students Brittany Elliott, Jasmine Ballantyne and Taylor Cooper focused principally on birds such as sea eagles and ospreys and small songbirds of the coastal heathlands. Their work has taken them to 20 sites on the Sunshine Coast, along with locations on North Stradbroke and Bribie Islands.

FILM AWARD FOR LOCAL A Sippy Downs filmmaker has gained recognition at the International Media Arts and Film Awards. Robin Nicolle’s film Honest Police, which was shot on the Sunshine Coast and in Caboolture, picked up three awards, including Best Short Film. Mr Nicolle (pictured) won best actor and fellow local Glenn Ganley won best editor for his work on the film. A

s financial markets grapple with the Omicron surge and rising inflation, a new threat to portfolios has emerged – a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine.

A decision by Kremlin-leaning Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014 to reject an association agreement with the European Union in favour of closer ties with Moscow led to mass protests and his removal as leader. Russia responded by annexing Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula and throwing its weight behind a separatist rebellion that broke out in Ukraine’s east.

Tensions have escalated recently after the Russian Foreign Ministry’s demands to halt NATO training near the Russian border and for its withdrawal from Eastern Europe were rejected. Over

100,000 Russian troops have since amassed on the Ukrainian border in response to stalled negotiations. The US and other NATO allies have responded by committing troops, munitions and funding to bolster Ukrainian defences.

This has inflamed the situation to a point where many analysts view an invasion as a matter of when, not if.

A Russian invasion would be felt across numerous financial markets.

Interruptions to the production and transit of commodities in the region would add to price inflation already present due to pandemic supply issues.

Russia and Ukraine are forecast to be two of the four largest exporters of wheat this year. Interruptions to shipping routes in the Black Sea from military action or sanctions could impact output from these nations as well as neighbours Kazakhstan and Romania. The risk of conflict has injected new volatility to wheat futures markets as investors balance the potential for higher returns against profit-taking from already buoyant prices. Short-term profits could be achieved in ASX-listed grain producers, but we believe the sector is currently too susceptible to fast-moving geopolitical influences to warrant meaningful investment.

Energy markets are likely to be impacted if tensions escalate. Europe

relies on Russia for around a third of its natural gas supply via pipelines crossing Belarus and Poland into Germany and others through Ukraine. Retaliation for an invasion would likely involve sanctions against Russian corporations and its financial sector. Germany has stated it would consider halting the Nord Stream 2 pipeline construction that transports gas via the Baltic Sea. It is likely exports from Russia will significantly reduce as a result, returning LNG prices to record levels seen in 2021 when European demand recovered from lockdown volumes. The gap between demand and production levels agreed by OPEC+ during the pandemic already helped oil prices track around seven-year highs. The heightened geopolitical stress will further inflate prices, particularly if all-out war occurs and oil demand recovery accelerates.

The ASX-200 energy index has appreciated eight per cent since the start of December whereas the ASX-200 has fallen by five per cent. While the 13 per cent disparity highlights the relative strength of energy stocks, we believe opportunities remain to invest in low-cost oil and gas producing companies with existing capital upside.

Inflation at multi-decade highs and impending interest rate increases have spiked bond yields across developed

economies. That theme may reverse as major risk events typically sees investors return to bonds and other safe haven assets such as gold and the US dollar. A fall in bond yields (and an increase in prices) would be a headache for central banks as they continue to battle inflation.

As for gold, it is only trading at 10 per cent less than the record level reached in March 2020, so you wonder how much its price could appreciate from here.

With a backdrop of a global pandemic, it is no wonder the CBOE volatility index (VIX) reached levels last seen when vaccines were approved in November 2020. Our hope is recent Russian posturing is an attempt to gain leverage and bring the West back to negotiation.

But it shouldn’t surprise that conflict in Ukraine would turn things up a notch for an already challenging investment landscape in 2022. For these reasons we believe it is important to allocate capital towards high-quality companies with flexible balance sheets and conservative valuations that arise during indiscriminate selling of equities.

IT’S TIME TO TALK Sunshine Coast girls are invited to take part in a self-love, health and wellbeing program. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

T

wo Sunshine Coast women are hoping to help young girls find their own empowered sense of self love as they navigate their tricky teenage years.

GRLTLK, or Girl Talk, is the shared vision of Sarhan Allen and Aelish Healy, who hope to use their own experiences to support teenage girls to reconnect back to self-love, health and wellbeing through a 10-week program.

Ms Allen, who is a personal trainer and wellness coach, says the program is something she wishes was around when she was younger. “We reflect on when we were teenagers and how much we would have thrived if we had this sort of support and knowledge,” she says. “I struggled with severe anxiety depression and an eating disorder. I was very disconnected as a child and went through a lot of health challenges and mental challenges.

“Reflecting now on the tools I have access to it makes sense to share this to the younger generation, but in a way that keeps it light-hearted and joyful but articulated.

“There is a lot of information out there these days and I think it’s important to keep it simple.

“We’ve walked that path ourselves and have come out the other side and we are so grateful to be able to share that wisdom with other girls. I can’t even imagine the ripples it will create for teenagers to connect back to their self-love and be able to look in the mirror and say ‘I love you’ to yourself.”

It is a similar story for Ms Healy, who is a learning guide with a passion for helping the community. She had to overcome the challenge of losing her father at a young age.

The friends hope the program, which is targeted at girls aged 12 to 16, will act as a

safe and nurturing space that focuses on three core pillars: connection, movement and breath.

“The connection pillar is supporting the girls in understanding their body and learning about their menstrual cycle,” Ms Allen says. “A lot of the time we don’t really understand it, even as women until we start to do our own research around it, and it’s such an important part of a female’s life.”

Ms Allen will use her professional background to guide teens through the second pillar, movement, teaching them about yoga, Pilates and mindful activity to support and healthy lifestyle.

“The final pillar is the breath, which we see as important in empowering our youth on learning how to breathe efficiently through the nose,” Ms Allen says. “It helps to increase their sleep and their focus at school; it comes back to that connection of ourselves in creating more presence and understanding and communicating our emotions.”

The first of the term-based programs begin on February 7. There is hope that the program will be expanded in the future to cater for primary school-aged girls and young women aged 17 to 21. GRLTLK will be held at Exalto Holistic Hub in Warana.

Safety improvement works are underway on the Havana Road footbridge over the Sunshine Motorway at Peregian Springs.

To maximise safety, a protective mesh screen will be installed along the footbridge near Coolum State High School.

“Pedestrian safety, especially near a school, is a priority and that is why we are delivering these important works,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce says. “We are installing the enclosed mesh screen along the bridge to ensure students and the community can safely cross over the busy Sunshine Motorway each day.”

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey says the project will be delivered as part of a $6.9 million package of works on the north Coast. “With Coolum State High School in close proximity, we know this footbridge is used by a large number of school students and their safety getting to and from school is a top priority.”

The project is expected to take up to five weeks to complete.

A husband and wife dedicated to restoring the environment have been presented with a special award in recognition of their outstanding achievements as volunteers.

Glenn and Judy Burns are being recognised with the BushCare Sunshine Coast’s Silver Mattock Award, which is presented annually to a BushCare community volunteer or volunteers.

The pair is involved with the Waterwatch Program, run by Maroochy Waterwatch, and attends regular working bees with Gulung Gung Bushcare Group at Quota Memorial Park and Namba Creek Group at the Model Railway Park.

“We both enjoy the opportunity to work outdoors and, with like-minded others, planting up the Petrie Creek riparian corridor,” Mr Burns says.

“One of the attractions of Nambour is its green heart, with its muchappreciated walkway along the creek, and over the years it’s been our privilege to help rehabilitate this corridor.”

POLICE TALK Spending time on the water is part of our lifestyle on the Sunshine Coast, so it is important to follow some simple tips to stay safe.

It’s also important to note the Transport Operations (Marine Safety) Act 1994 imposes a general safety obligation on all vessel owners and operators, which masters and crew must adhere to at all times.

This includes making sure the craft is safe, properly equipped and maintained and operated in a safe manner.

Water-wise tips: • Check that your boat is in good condition.

• Check you have all of the required safety

equipment on board and that safety equipment is in good condition and easily accessible. Let everyone on board know where it is.

• Report your trip. Let someone know where you are going, how many people are on board and when you intend to return.

• Have the right marine licence. Make sure you and your crew know how to handle the boat for where you are going.

• Know how to use your marine radio, which channels to use and when.

• Check the weather before you go out.

• Make sure you have enough water and fuel for the whole trip.

• Go easy on the drink – waves, wind and weather multiply the effects of alcohol.

Far too many boating fatalities involve alcohol.

• Know the rules of the sea road and follow them.

• Wear your life jacket. If it’s not on, it can’t save you.

Making sure these safety measures are implemented makes a day on the water fun and safe for everyone.

GATEWAY CARE ENGAGES WITH MARGINALISED YOUTH A Caloundra-based charity that helps provide low-cost groceries to the community is also working hard to engage with marginalised youth.

Gateway Care works with several Sunshine Coast schools that target young people who are at high risk of becoming involved with the criminal justice system or show other signs of struggling due to learning or behavioural issues.

Programs provide opportunities for youth to engage in community activities while assisting with vocational skills development, including support to address language and literacy issues.

Kairos Community College founder and teacher Owen Lee is supportive of the program and says students participating regularly are showing positive outcomes.

“Kairos Community College has been involved with Gateway since we first began our campus in 2020,” Mr Lee says.

“Our young people that volunteer at Gateway have shown higher levels of confidence and are stronger people due to the skills learnt while participating.

“Our young people who volunteer each Friday have learned new skills, some of which have resulted in casual employment and paid opportunities.”

Colourful character Buderim artist Gretchen Keelty is the new president of Sunshine Coast arts organisation Arts Connect, bringing a wealth of experience to the role.

T

he world of Gretchen Keelty is as colourful and interesting as the huge pink hats, crazy sunglasses and bright dresses she loves to wear. The Buderim artist, who was recently named president of Sunshine Coast arts organisation Arts Connect Inc, is bursting with tales to tell, of science studies, military training, miracles in Spain, her love of chickens and of course, her passion for art of any medium.

Growing up on a farm in Palmwoods, she was an only child who ran amok on the farm with her dog and was always painting, drawing and making things. Her love of chickens began there.

“I might sound like a crazy chicken lady, but my chickens are like little feathered puppies that follow me around,” she says. “I have four: Priscilla, Esmeralda, Bertha and Mildred. They are the most gorgeous, intelligent, inquisitive little beings. Each has a very distinct personality and they are easier to train than a dog.

“They might not even realise they are chickens. They eat yoghurt with hemp for breakfast, hand-fed organic elderberries and coriander from my garden. They get lots of cuddles.”

Despite showing an early aptitude for art, Ms Keelty went on to study a Bachelor

of Science at the University of Queensland, during which time she enrolled in Reserve Officer Training in the army.

“After doing military history I thought, you know what? I don’t think this is for me, mainly because of the politics. Now I have a very different view. One thing most people don’t understand about the army is it’s not all about war, it’s about resources. It’s a massive organisation that is expert at logistics; doling out resources and getting things done in a really thorough process.”

Following on from UQ, Ms Keelty studied a Bachelor of Arts with a minor in Information Systems at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), and a Bachelor of Business in Marketing and minor in International Business, also at USC. Having completed three degrees, she moved to Canberra to take up a marketing job, followed by a stint at the Australian Research Council. She then moved to Sydney to study at the Julian Ashton Art School, followed by the Shillington College of Design. She completed her Masters of Fine Art Production in Valencia, Spain.

“I’d been travelling and teaching

English and my friend Fernando invited me to go and live with him and paint in Spain,” she says. “I’ve had a few health issues with my heart and the cardiac specialist said ‘my prescription for you is to go and live in Spain with this really nice man, eat lots of salty food and be happy’.”

However, when Ms Keelty arrived in Spain in May 2016, her friend wasn’t there to meet her. She subsequently discovered he’d been hiking in the Pyrenees and had frozen to death.

“I was in Valencia, alone, and people kept saying, ‘why don’t you just come home?’ I thought, what to? I’m a single woman living on the Coast who doesn’t’ have children.”

She stayed for two-and-a-half years, learning to ride a bike at the age of 37 to get around, because she felt it was too dangerous to drive on Spanish roads.

“The Unversitat Politecnica de Valencia was incredible,” she says. “It was really hard because I didn’t speak Spanish or Valencian.

But I would go five days a week from when the cleaners unlocked the doors at 8am to when they closed at 10.30pm.”

Ms Keelty tells incredible tales of her time in Spain, such as clearly hearing the voice of her dead Spanish friend giving her advice – something her scientific mind questioned, but accepted – and narrowly escaping death when the building she lived in collapsed.

She will exhibit work inspired by her time in Spain at Arts Connect Inc’s Truth, Healing and Prophecy exhibition at the Old Ambulance Station in Nambour from February 4 to March 5. It’s one of many events Arts Connect organises across the Sunshine Coast each year, including Open Studios in March and Sculpture On the Edge at Spicers Tamarind, Maleny.

“President of Arts Connect is a big job,” she says. “We’ve got more than 200 members. We’re experiencing huge growth.

Our members are just amazing and I really love meeting them.

“In this economy, where we all have to evolve and shift, artists have a really big role to play. I think it’s that creative mind, where you come at things from a different angle.

The arts have taken a huge hit in the last two years. It’s really important to understand and value what artists bring.

We are creative problem solvers.

“I really want the membership to go up and more members to actively participate. I want everyone to feel confident to grow their skills and I want to increase opportunities. I want to keep building up the network and enriching the Coast.”

Ms Keelty is also on the board of WomenKind, which helped raise $280,000 for SunnyKids and $5000 for No More Fake Smiles at the Noosa Mingle with the Mayor Ball last year.

A

public art project with a difference has been unfolding in Coolum.

Since July 2021, six local artists have taken turns stepping into the temporary role as The Keeper.

Keepers observe, collect, make and tell and listen to stories. What they do with those stories and observations depends on who they meet, their art practice and the day, but what has evolved so far are live public art projects that are 100 per cent Coolum.

The first Keeper, Libby Derham, a fourthgeneration watercolourist, captured the unique sites and stories of the moment as she painted her way along the 360-metre Coolum boardwalk, chatting to thousands of Coolum locals and visitors.

The Keepers are archaeologists of stories.

Keeper 2 – Peta O’Hara, hosted story-sharing walks around Coolum, offering participants an opportunity to share their story and personally significant locations around Coolum.

A unique project came next with Shannon Carroll, Keeper 3, who rose at 3.33am every morning to record the dawn chorus of the birds in various locations around Coolum.

Those who were lucky enough to meet Keeper 4 enjoyed sitting for a portrait by visual artist Simone Gillam, who invited women of all ages and backgrounds to sit for their portrait and share their experiences of living and holidaying in Coolum Beach.

Keeper 5, Kellie O’Dempsey, tried to

uncover and understand a landmark that disappeared from Coolum in 1960. She heard the story from Lyndon Davis and went on to interview and speak to people about this landmark and report on her findings.

Drawing a close on 2021, Keeper 6 was visual artist and writer Alison Mooney, who created curious spectacles around Coolum’s ancient rocks and shoreline.

The Keeper Project is currently on hold to ensure COVID safety for artists and participants, but there’s more to come, with four keepers waiting in the wings, ready to unpack and explore more of Coolum’s unique stories.

Nambour residents are in for a treat with lush landscaping, fun cycle ways and shaded picnic areas in the town’s new parkland – currently referred to as Howard Street Nambour New Council Park Stage 1 – providing the perfect place to relax.

The recently completed $650,000 stage one works provide a 1.7-hectare green boost for the hinterland town.

Footpaths now connect to Quota Memorial Park and the project includes 45,000 native trees and shrubs, creekside landscaping, and open green spaces for the community to socialise and enjoy time outdoors.

Jane Stephens says middle-aged professional women have become Australia’s biggest drinkers, even drinking men under the table.

Ashley Robinson has had a few doses of psychosomatic COVID and dreams of the day beer will be a bona fide vaccine.

A

ustralia is a nation of lushes, drinking alcohol to mark the start of something, an end, a birthday, an anniversary, or just because it is the day’s end. We can always find a reason to have a drink.

But while alcohol has been part of our social fabric since the First Fleet, we are drinking more now than 20 years ago. By “we” I mean women in their middle years.

Women, particularly those who are well-educated and have good jobs, are a boozy bunch and for us it is a steady soaking rather than getting stonkered in a short, sharp sesh.

We are bold about it: our so-called glasses of goodness feature in memes and pithy sayings. Drinking too much is still something to giggle about. But we know it isn’t – not really.

Like most other women my age, I have had periods in life when I was sometimes drinking too much to feel in control of it, rather than the routine being in control of me. Bizarrely, the times I drank most were times I would have said I was happy.

I think women of the middle years are commonly wrung out about work, about a recent separation or divorce, and about

their teenagers or young adults. Many are alone. They might feel less desirable or healthy than a decade ago. For them, temporary escapism lurks in the fridge or in the liquor cabinet and getting fuzzy feels better than feeling stressed, lonely or sad.

Until it doesn’t any more. Despite being educated about the risks, our love for the most socially acceptable drug deepens.

Interestingly, all statisticians note is that drinkers are notorious for understating how much we quaff: our go-to is saying we have had ‘a couple’ of glasses. So if women are owning up to drinking more, goodness knows how much is actually being imbibed.

The health effects of drinking too much for too long are enormous.

Try these: liver damage, diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke, falls and delirium. Not exactly glamorous. The problem is that our drink of choice tastes good. It is legal, cheap and social.

And due to the pandemic, it is now acceptable to drink alone. The latest findings are another wake-up call: discussions about alcohol need shots of honesty and chasers of reality. Some personal truths can hurt as much as the worst hangover.

f the dictionary had pictures beside words it would be far more entertaining to use and I would understand things somewhat better.

For instance, if it did have pictures beside the word ‘psychosomatic’ the definition: “Caused or aggravated by a mental factor such as internal conflict or stress”, would be accompanied by a photo of yours truly in all my glory.

A bit of history. Back in 1982 I went down with pneumonia about two weeks before an important time for me – the local footy finals. I ended up in hospital, discharged the week of the grand final with the last words from the doctor being, “you have scarring on your lungs now, so you will probably catch whatever is going around and get it worse than most, so be careful”. Of course, I ignored the initial advice and played in the final, which nearly killed me and even worse, it was a waste of time as I played terribly. So I got crook again and a lecture from the doctor on my recovery about being more susceptible.

Then, every year onwards for at least the next seven years I got crook in August, with a far more severe man flu than others.

In fact, as soon as I got the sniffles, I would go downhill at a massive rate of knots with the words of the doctor firmly planted in my head. A bit like when my dad told me I would only have two types luck: bad luck and none, because my last name was Robinson. I must say, I have improved on the health front thanks to my other half telling me to go take a can of toughen up for the last few decades.

Why am I sharing this with you? Well simply put, COVID. Every time I sneeze, my throat becomes dry, or I feel a bit flu-like, the brain goes straight to worst case scenario. I have had a number of tests, the first one somewhat painful back at the start of all this when a nurse went mining up my nose with what felt like a javelin. She did apologise, but I told her it wasn’t her fault my nose looked like this.

To date, every test I have had has been negative, but I am guessing sooner or later I am going to get this thing.

I did dream the other night that I had found a better vaccine than the three shots I have had – Coopers Sparkling Ale – so I am going to go with that. Good luck and good health.

n these times where things seem a bit topsy turvy, the tennis gave me great comfort and many laughs.

How good was Ash Barty insisting she didn’t want to have a celebratory beer alone?

And what a joyous image to witness on the small screen Steve Waugh in the crowd dismantling a Drumstick ice-cream like a boss. The pictures of the former Australian cricket captain sparked pure joy, because we all know how great an ice-cream feels to devour. When you are doing it at the actual tennis, then it’s a pretty great day.

Australia’s unofficial top hobbies are surely food and sport, so it has me posing the question: what should the iconic food be that is served at the Australian Open tennis grand slam? Wimbledon has its signature strawberry and cream dessert.

Melbourne Cup goes hand-in-hand with a glass of bubbles. Superbowl is always celebrated with buffalo wings, beer and million-dollar advertisements. And you cannot beat a hotdog smothered in ketchup at a baseball game in the US. So, let’s get to it and kickstart the ultimate Aussie menu that would include a bucket item list to eat. My mates suggest Vegemite sandwiches, cut into little

triangles of course. On the bread theme, I feel fairy bread would also work a treat.

The most obvious answer may be the humble sausage sizzle. Yes, the onion is always served on the top and only barbecue sauce is legal. Why not tomato sauce? We may be former convicts, but we are not animals. Meat pies, sausage rolls and Chicko Rolls are all finalists.

Maybe we could lean into the sweet tooth factor and serve little platters with a hot cup of Milo next to a slice of pavlova and a mini lamington finger. Why not make it a full-size fat square lamington?

Calorie counting should not be done at the tennis.

But you know what I think the winner should be? The Tim Tam Slam. Get it? At a grand slam! We teach our tourist guests the Aussie sport of dunking the best chocolate biscuit in the world in a hot drink and using that little slab of goodness as a straw. We name it the Australian Open Tim Tam Slam.

I have clearly missed my calling to make my fame and fortune in marketing. I am sending Ash Barty a message on Facebook today about my brilliant idea, so if I am not here next week look for me in the Bahamas.

ustralia’s first dedicated medicinal cannabis group is rolling out two Sunshine Coast clinics, heralding a revolution in chronic pain and anxiety management.

Releaf Clinics and Dispensaries has chosen Bulcock Street, Caloundra, for its first Queensland clinic, which will open on February 10, followed by a second facility in Hastings Street, Noosa, in mid to late March. This will allow patients easier access to doctors able to prescribe products such as cannabis oil from the on-site dispensary and educate people on the wider benefits.

And just like at any other medical clinic, Releaf patients will be able to qualify for Medicare rebates.

Medicinal cannabis has been proven to help with pain, prevent or reduce vomiting, and also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

It is used by a diverse range of patients for conditions from Parkinson’s Disease and epilepsy to cancer. Releaf Group Limited CEO and co-founder Gary Mackenzie says five doctors are ready to begin consultations in Caloundra and he is “just waiting on a couple of regulatory things” before face-to-face and tele-health consultations can begin.

“We’ve already had a huge response,” Mr Mackenzie, a kidney cancer survivor, told Sunshine Coast News.

“We’ve had over 200 patients request to see doctors (from the QR code attached to the clinic sign at 1/60 Bulcock Street).

“(Caloundra is) our very first Releaf clinic and dispensary in Queensland.

“We will have up to around 25 doctors operating in Queensland within the next three months.”

Mr Mackenzie says the company has plans to roll out clinics and dispensaries at 100 sites across Australia over the next couple of years. Once Caloundra and Noosa are established, Releaf also expects to open smaller, more central clinics at Maroochydore and Mooloolaba.

Releaf doctors and pharmacists are highly trained in the use and prescription of medicinal cannabis.

One of Releaf’s main aims is to reduce the cost of medicinal cannabis to prices well below those charged by international companies.

Mr Mackenzie says Releaf’s aim is to better educate the medical fraternity and general public on the benefits of the natural medicine and for medicinal cannabis to have more mainstream acceptance as part of the spectrum of treatment tools available.

THE SURFER’S EYE (PTERYGIUM) Surfer’s eye is the common name given to a noncancerous growth on the eye’s surface due to repeated sun damage.

CLINICAL TRIALS REPRESENT HOPE For some locals participating in clinical trials at Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, the trials represent hope for themselves. Others participate in the knowledge that their involvement could help shape patient care and identify gold standards of treatment for future generations.

Clinical trials are research studies designed to test new treatments, devices or diagnostic tools that researchers hope will improve outcomes for patients.

The clinical trials unit at Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, led by Vishwa Kumar has expanded with an additional team member, more trials and plans for trials at other locations across the Coast.

The local hospital is part of Ramsay Health Care’s National Clinical Trial Network of 14 dedicated units, which use standardised operating procedures and an ethical and governance framework that complies with the Australian Code.

Mr Kumar says the development of clinical trials and providing patients with access to them is a critical part of a providing a system of high-quality, leading care.

“I’ve worked with patients for a long time and really enjoy being patient focused and interacting with them,” he says.

Participation in a clinical trial is voluntary and may give patients the opportunity to access potential new treatments before they reach the market.

“With clinical trials being an option for a number of diagnoses, it is exciting to be able to offer this to our patient population.”

Mr Kumar says there are different types of trials, across different ‘phases’, and any drugs may be administered by tablet or infusion.

“Phase one are new trials and more about dose escalation and how much a patient can tolerate – and may be particularly attractive to patients who are coming to their last line of treatment – whereas phase three trials tend to be comparative and may involve an approved drug as well as a new one,” he says.

Clinical trials may give patients access to very expensive drugs at no cost to them, as trial sponsors cover costs.

Mr Kumar says Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital is currently running clinical trials for conditions such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, urothelial cancer and advanced metastatic disease. In future, the team is hoping to establish trials in the areas of pain management and gastroenterology.

Patients may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial depending on their type of disease or condition, their age and overall wellbeing. Interested patients should speak to their GP or treating specialist.

2. Freedom from anxiety and stress: Stressed is the least likely place from which we’re able to learn or make changes. Hypnotherapy can assist in retraining your nervous system to feel calm, safe and at ease, putting the power back in your hands.

3. Overcoming depression: Hypnotherapy can be an effective treatment for depression because it helps you to regain control over your thoughts, emotions and behaviours.

The dangers of a sedentary lifestyle are well documented, but still many people don’t prioritise daily exercise. So what makes being sedentary so unhealthy and what can you do to reverse the negative impacts of too much time spent sitting?

A sedentary lifestyle with a lack of regular physical activity can lead to muscular atrophy, which in turn invites a whole host of negative health outcomes.

Thankfully this is completely reversible and you can halt, and even undo, this detrimental condition with regular exercise.

You needn’t be an athlete to reap the benefits of exercise; some moderate daily movement will suffice. More important than how much you do is doing something daily. If you’re stuck at home watching TV or working at a desk from nine to five and feel like you’re not active enough, simply get out of the chair and get moving. Even if it’s only for 30 minutes, it’s important to do something.

If you’re particularly unfit, seeing a medical professional or movement expert first is highly recommended.

I thought this week I would debunk three common myths in the fitness industry.

The first one is, ‘if you lift weights, it will make you bulky’. False! Eating too many calories over an extended period will make you ‘bulky’ or overweight. Lean muscle is very hard to build and the average person, training relatively hard, will only ever add around one to three kilos of lean muscle a year.

Myth number two is, ‘artificial sweeteners are bad for you’. If you can’t do without a sugary fix, substituting a few teaspoons of sweetener over foods and in coffee should not adversely affect you.

However, I would not recommend drinking five cans of diet soft drink a day – water is a much better alternative.

And finally, the third myth I would like to cover is, ‘sit-ups and crunches will burn unwanted belly fat’. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this is false. We cannot choose where body fat comes off – this depends on your genetics. It is not possible to ‘spot burn fat’. Overall exercise will burn overall body fat. If you are losing fat but not on the belly, it just means you must continue to watch your calorie intake until those stubborn areas are forced to move.

FACTS ABOUT SALT Salt is a natural resource found everywhere from the ocean to our tears, it’s tasty and it can be really cheap. But too much salt isn’t great. Here, we bust some salt myths.

Myth 1: All salt is out to kill you and you shouldn’t eat any of it Eating too much salt can contribute to high blood pressure, which is linked to conditions like heart failure and heart attack, kidney problems, fluid retention, stroke and osteoporosis. But salt is also an important nutrient for the human body.

Your body uses salt to balance fluids in the blood and maintain healthy blood pressure, and it is essential for nerve and muscle function. The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend adults eat no more than five grams of salt a day.

Myth 2: Himalayan/pink/black/rock/sea salt is better for you than other salts Consumer advocacy group CHOICE says Australians should be wary of these health claims, as the minerals found in salts like Himalayan sea salt are often present in only very small amounts.

Myth 3: Some people naturally crave more salt than others The taste for salty foods is learned, rather than built in. It’s possible to retrain your taste buds to like foods with less salt.

Try eating mostly fresh food instead of processed food, which tend to be high in added salt. Go for packaged and canned foods labelled ‘no added salt’, ‘low salt’ or ‘salt reduced’. Compare similar packaged foods by looking at the food labels and choosing the item with less sodium.

Flavour your cooking with herbs and spices and avoid adding salt at the table.

Myth 4: You can tell a food is salty by tasting it Many packaged foods that contain a lot of salt have other ingredients that balance out the salty flavour, so the salt is effectively hidden in the food.

Myth 5: You should eat or drink more salt after working out Salt comes out of your body in two ways – through urine and perspiration – but that doesn’t mean you need to add extra salt to your diet every time you break a sweat. Some products, like sports drinks, are advertised as a good way to replace lost salts after working out. But tap water and consuming a healthy diet will help replace any nutrients lost during any activity.

Sports drinks can be used to rehydrate if you have exercised continuously for 90 minutes or more.

Myth 6: If you had high blood pressure caused by too much salt, you’d be able to tell Most people with high blood pressure don’t display any symptoms, so it’s important to get your blood pressure checked regularly.

uyers just need to stop over in Ilkley to discover what a gem of a place this lesser-known Coast location is and how hot its residential market has become.

“A lot of people don’t know where Ilkley is until they get out there,” Ray White agent Kathryn Willshire said. “But once they get there, it’s the only place where they want to buy.”

“There is such a strong appetite for small acreage in Ilkley and Chevallum which is where I spend a majority of my time,” she added.

Last year Ms Willshire sold an Ilkley small acreage property for no small amount at $2.2 million.

“People love it because there is no road noise,” she said. “It’s lovely and peaceful.

“The neat thing is people can have their kids there, school buses stop outside the front gate, and you have Matthew Flinders on one side and Grammar on the other. There are lots of families saying, particularly with COVID, let’s have some space, some small acreage, but we don’t want too be far out of town.”

The happy vendor of the Ray White listed property at 384 Ilkley Road at Ilkley The interest is so strong in the area some 120 groups inspected the fourbedroom home at 384 Ilkley Road in Ilkley before Saturday’s auction.

“It’s a pristine, small acreage block,” Ms Willshire said. “It’s one of the best kept secrets in Ilkley.”

Ms Willshire said there were several offers received prior to the auction date but the vendor decided to wait to the big day when nine registered bidders were out front of a huge crowd of neighbours.

The bidders were from south-east

Queensland, NSW and even one, on the phone, from Papua New Guinea.

The bidding was really very competitive Ms Willshire reported.

“Bidding started at $1 million and then jumped very quickly to $1.3 million, then $1.35 million and then straight up to $1.5 million.” By then only three bidders were putting up their hands.

“From there it went to $1.52 million then $1.55 million before creeping up by $10,000 bids until it reached $1.610 million.”

The property finally sold under the hammer to an NSW buyer for $1.610 million.

JEWEL IN THE GLITTERING KING’S BEACH CROWN The opportunity to drive an hour or so north to holiday beachside continues to draw in keen Brisbane buyers with the funds to pay top dollar for King’s Beach properties.

The elevated 1235 square metre block at 14B King Street in King’s Beach, with its eight-year-old north-east facing sprawling six-bedroom home sold at auction on Thursday for an “outstanding” $2.710 million.

Listing agent Andrew Garland of Ray White Caloundra described the sale result as “well over expectations”.

There were eight registered bidders and the successful bidder was a Brisbane buyer. “Kings, Shelly, Moffat and Dicky beaches, we are getting these results consistently because it’s the closest port of call from Brisbane,” Mr Garland said.

INVESTORS HUNT VALUE IN MOOLOOLABA There’s still plenty of investors in the market said First National Riverside agent Jason Burns.

His two-bedroom listed property at 6/14 Douglas Street in Mooloolaba attracted five registered bidders; two were owner-occupier and three were investors.

It sold under the hammer for $632,000 to a local investor.

The owners of the modest sized residential building apartment were pleased with the outcome.

“It was listed for three weeks, and we had 40 groups through the property,” Mr Burns said. “Six came through for a second look.”
