From the editor After reading this week’s feature story, I’m wondering if it’s time to set sail to Finland.

Why? Because, according to the 2021 World Happiness Report, Finland is the happiest country in the world, and Australia comes a long way down the line at number 11.

Nevertheless, to put that number into context, you have to know that the figure is derived from a survey of 149 countries.

Still, if you live on the Sunshine Coast, it’s hard to imagine how a cold climate could rate above a warm place.

The truth is while I would love a visit to Finland, long term I think the lack of sun and opportunity to walk on white sand and dive into a clean blue ocean on a frequent basis would make me sad enough to bring down their average

happiness percentage. There’s a saying that goes like this: “Wherever, you go there you are” and I’m afraid I would take my summer-loving self with me. When I think of living in Queensland, I think of one word: #blessed.

According to the Oxford dictionary, happiness is the state of pleasurable contentment of mind; deep pleasure in or contentment with one’s circumstances.

Fair enough, but I feel a quote from Robertson Davies explains a bit more about this choice state of mind.

“Happiness” the distinguished Canadian author says, “is always a by-product. It is probably a matter of temperament, and for anything I know it may be glandular. But it is not something that can be demanded from life, and if you are not happy you had better stop worrying about it and see what treasures you can pluck from your own brand of unhappiness”.

This week’s feature story is a moving narrative detailing the lives of two women who lived through and confronted deeply disturbing circumstances to come out the other end with a positive attitude and, indeed happiness.

the concept of happiness into a commodity to be bought and sold. With a quality like happiness that holds such an allure, it can’t help but be a prime target for avarice.

The women in this story, weren’t sold happiness; instead they did the hard yards, found it and owned it. I think one of the best things about being human is having the capacity to do the deep dive and climb back up and enjoy the good times. Best of all, you don’t have to travel to Finland to do it.

Locals are key to a just transition Fossil-fuel dependant communities must be considered as the world moves towards renewable energy. • the need for a local co-ordinating authority, • funding for a ‘flagship’ job-creation project, and • more resources for technical and vocational education.

These priorities were identified through consultations in late 2021 by two community organisations, Hunter Renewal and Hunter Jobs Alliance. They did so in response to the New South Wales government announcing $25 million a year to a Royalties for Rejuvenation Fund.

The fund is meant to “ensure coal mining communities have the support they need to develop other industries in the long-term”.

But how to spend the money wisely?

The consultations involved 314 people from across the region ranking 22 ideas from previous work on this issue. About a third of participants were involved in workshop discussions. The balance contributed through a survey.

Key to the top three priorities is the need for self-determination, allowing local communities to decide on which solutions are best and how to implement them.

As one workshop participant put it: “The most important thing is involving the local community in designing the transition. Unless you take the locals with

s the world shifts to renewable energy, helping communities that have depended on fossil fuels for jobs is becoming ever more pressing.

The 2015 Paris Agreement notes the imperative of a “just transition” for affected workforces, with “the creation of decent work and quality jobs” to replace those lost.

Trade unionists have been arguing this point for at least several decades. The first use of the phrase ‘just transition’ is attributed to the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada, which called for a ‘Just Transition Program’ for workers in the logging industry in 1996.

Yet for all the talk since, action remains scarce.

Three clear priorities for policy makers, however, have emerged from Australia’s Hunter Valley region, where coal mines employ about 14,000 workers directly and thousands more indirectly. These are:

1. Have a local co-ordinating authority Local co-ordination is important to ensure solutions reflect a community’s needs, skills and opportunities.

The Victoria government set up the Latrobe Valley Authority in 2016, following the unexpected announcement of the closure of the Hazelwood power station in 2017. Beginning with $270 million in funding, the authority is headquartered in Morwell, in the heart of the Latrobe Valley’s coal-mining industry.

This means those who work for the authority know the region and are in touch with the stakeholders from industry, government, education and community organisations who inform its ‘smart specialisation’ approach to identify local strengths and competitive advantages.

A local authority can also co-ordinate with other authorities to ensure fossil fuel communities aren’t competing against each other to create jobs in the same new industries.

2. Fund flagship job-creation projects Flagship projects give tangible direction to the transition and create hope for the future.

An example comes from the coalmining community of Collie in Western

Australia. It involves industry, government and university researchers working together on a project to make ‘Colliecrete’, a more sustainable form of concrete made from fly ash, a waste product from the burning of coal by the local coal-fired power stations.

Emulating this plan using waste fly ash from Hunter Valley power stations could potentially create 3000 permanent full-time jobs in New South Wales, according to a report commissioned by Hunter Community Environment Centre.

3. Expand vocational training Retraining is crucial to new industries to flourish, and for workers to find new jobs.

A 2020 report from the Clean Energy Council found shortages of skilled and experienced staff are hampering development in renewable energy industries. The report recommended the vocational educational system needed reviewing, because “existing training systems are not meeting industry needs”.

Indeed in the Hunter region, TAFE closures are occurring at a time when they should be expanding.

Think local, act local Local communities understand the transition away from economic reliance on fossil-fuel industries can’t happen overnight. They are keen to get moving.

These priorities identified by the coalmining communities of New South Wales’ Hunter Valley hold lessons for the rest of Australia, and the world.

What’s important is that local communities take the leading role in defining their challenges, and then addressing them.

The people who know a community best, and what is possible, are those who live in them. You just have to ask them.

EMERGING INSIGHTS ABOUT HAPPINESS

The burgeoning field of positive psychology defines happiness as positive emotions we have in regards to the pleasurable activities we take part in through our daily lives. Researchers from 60 countries gathered at the International Positive Psychology Association’s 6th World Congress in Melbourne in July 2019 to share cutting-edge insights on the science of wellbeing. Three of the emerging keys to happiness that stood out were positive solitude (alone time that feeds our wellbeing); feeling active (how energetic, vigorous and vital we feel); and future-mindedness (dreaming of great things to come).

Keys to happiness For two Sunshine Coast women, their happiness has come from a great deal of heartache, but they are sharing their stories to help others who are struggling to find happiness in the world. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

T

welve months before the Bali bombings, Carren Smith’s partner took his own life, leaving behind a note outlining why it was her fault. Guilt-ridden and unable to live with herself, she went to Bali with two friends on the anniversary of his death in October 2002, planning to take her own life. Instead, what happened gave her a reason to live.

She was on the dance floor of the Sari Club when the bombs went off. When she regained consciousness, she found herself lying in a pit covered in dead bodies and a collapsed roof. Despite multiple injuries, she survived. Her two friends did not.

The Bokarina professional speaker and business coach now draws on her story of survival to help others. She has worked with more than 600,000 people, delivered 3300 presentations and supported the successful launch of more than 3000 businesses. Her 2012 book Soul Survivor: The Compelling Truth About a Broken Woman’s Survival of the 2002 Bali Bombings details how she was able to reinvent herself in the wake of devastating trauma.

“I didn’t understand why I came home,

when I was the one who went there to take my life,” she says. “I needed to find the answer in order for me to be here. I needed to find my peace of mind, my foundations, who I was now.”

Formerly a corporate high-flyer in Sydney, her old life no longer had the same meaning. “It wasn’t until I was standing in front of a thousand people in Melbourne, talking about happiness that I realised I had been working seven days a week,” she says.

“I was always sick and so run down. When I was standing on the stage, it occurred to me I was running myself into the ground, trying to pay back what I felt I’d done wrong.

“I wasn’t literally taking my life, but still killing myself trying to make up for it. That was about the 11-year mark after the bombings. I can say my real happiness came on that realisation, where I let myself off the hook. I concentrated on finding happiness, rather than paying a price.

“I can’t even compare the profound love I have for myself now with how I was pre-Bali,” she says. “I didn’t know myself pre-Bali. I was just like everybody else,

getting up, going to work in Sydney, climbing the corporate career ladder.”

As the general manager for one of the world’s largest recruitment agencies, Ms Smith was responsible for 300 staff. She says she was focused on having the title of general manager by the time she was 25.

“I worked 18 hours a day, I sacrificed a lot in terms of relationships. I went after what I wanted hard. But how can you meet

After Bali, my focus changed completely. I felt my purpose here was to show the world that if I can go through losing my partner to suicide and then be blown up in a bomb, we can handle anything.

“People don’t need to have a bomb under their butt to wake them up. They can use me as a platform to learn the lessons without having the suffering. So I set about becoming a professional speaker, so I could stand on stages across the world and be a beacon. I feel like what I’m doing now is profoundly more purposeful.”

Ms Smith believes having a purpose in life is one of the greatest keys to happiness, but that happiness is something we all have already, hidden underneath life’s worries, stresses and strains.

“I ascribe to the Dalai Lama’s view that happiness is our natural state and it is what is always present,” she says. “The barriers to our happiness are distractions. If we limit the distractions, then our natural state becomes happiness. We live in a world that is only about distractions.

“I think as humans we haven’t quite figured it out yet – that the more we go back to basics, the more we stand still, the more present we are, the closer we come to our own inner peace. Inner peace, I feel, is a key to happiness.”

Angie Mansey and (inset) her recent book How I Made Lemonade “I became a teenage mother after becoming pregnant at 16 and escaped a severely abusive relationship at 18 years old with the assistance of police and stumbled many times before finding my feet,” she says. “I completed high school at night while working two jobs to support my son and I started my life over many times to try to give my son the best future possible.”

Now happily married and with four sons, she is a full-time carer to her second son, who has spent most of his 11 years in hospital with a rare medical condition.

She and husband Luke bought Kuluin Mufflers in 2016 and recently expanded into a second business, KM Exhausts Australia. She also founded the charity Driven by KM to provide financial support to the families of terminally and chronically ill children on the Sunshine Coast. She won the Telstra Small Business Woman of the Year award in 2019, the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Young Business Woman of the Year in 2017 and the Sunshine Coast Business Award for Excellence in Social Responsibility 2017.

Mrs Mansey has a wide smile and a cool rockabilly style that fits well with her role in the automotive industry. Not long after her book came out, she dyed her hair blue, because, why not? “I like to do really fun things way out of my comfort zone,” she

after myself, because I look after everybody around me. I thought, it’s really important to do some nice things for myself, so I started burlesque dancing. It made me laugh and it’s something to look forward to each week, which is just one hour for me. I have really enjoyed that.”

Mrs Mansey says she’s always found it hard to ask for help, but last year decided to get a cleaner as part of her self-care.

“I realised I wasn’t able to do it all,” she says. “My home has to be immaculate and I wanted to free myself up to have more time with my kids rather than scrubbing my shower on a Saturday morning.”

Mrs Mansey has definitely turned lemons into lemonade, as her book title suggests. Not that life is easy.

“One big rule I have is that I give myself 24 hours to feel sorry for myself,” she says. “We could be given a really bad diagnosis, something terrible could happen that brings me to my knees. I have 24 hours to feel really sorry for myself and after that, I have to pick myself up and keep going.”

BY THE NUMBERS World’s happiest countries Since 2002, the World Happiness Report has used statistical analysis to determine the world’s happiest countries. In its 2021 update, the report concluded that Finland is the happiest country in the world, with Australia ranked at number 11. To determine the world’s happiest country, researchers analysed comprehensive Gallup polling data from 149 countries for the past three years, specifically monitoring performance in six particular categories: gross domestic product per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make your own life choices, generosity of the general population, and perceptions of internal and external corruption levels.

The least happy country in the world for 2021 was Afghanistan.

and lockdowns has been that we’ve had a shift back to basics, which has made us appreciate our time with family and friends and realise how overwhelmed we had become with constant work, constant separation and constant distraction.

“We realised how disconnected we’d become from ourselves,” she says. “I don’t think we would have gone back to basics if we hadn’t been forced. As we start to transition into a new normal, I think there are some lessons we can take with us.”

In her daily life, Ms Smith maintains a number of practices she says are essential keys to her personal happiness. She meditates twice a day for 20 minutes, trains at F45 every day, eats a vegan diet with no sugar and most importantly, allows herself to be present with her emotions.

“Whenever I’m feeling pain or suffering, I don’t push it to the side. I don’t wish it away; I sit in it. Whatever we resist, persists.

If I sit in it and feel it, it moves through in five or 10 minutes. If I don’t, it can take months. You have to feel it to heal it.”

Bli Bli author and multiple business award winner Angie Mansey has also triumphed over tragedy. In her 2021 book How I Made Lemonade, she details a dysfunctional childhood growing up on the Sunshine Coast, which saw her living on the streets at 14.

says. “My hair is bright blue now and it makes me happy. I have a full sleeve of tattoos filled with things that make me smile, like wildflowers.

“Changing my appearance to something that is bright and colourful makes me feel happy and uplifted.”

Her bubbly persona defies the reality of her life situation as a mum of four children – one who lives in chronic pain – and owner of two businesses that all demand her attention. Her energy and determination to create a happy life for herself and her family seem boundless.

“I really think it comes from wanting so badly to not remain in the same place I was born into,” she says. “I wanted more for myself and for my children. I wanted to give my children opportunities I never had.

“When my son’s liver failed about five years ago – we were on surgery 25 at the time – we realised I wasn’t going to be able to maintain my job as a dental nurse. He was in dire straits. We sold our family home and purchased a business that was for sale.

We had $180,000 of debt due to medical bills. It was a new career for my husband Luke and I. We built in a lounge room beside the office so I could take Corbin to work every day and keep him hooked up to the machine feeding him and administering medications. It came about by necessity and grew into a passion. We’ve now got seven staff and Corbin still comes to work on the days he’s not able to go to school.”

Mrs Mansey’s key to happiness is to ensure she is surrounded by positive people and things.

“That includes friends or anything that makes me smile. My house is full of beautiful flowers and fairy lights. I’m very organised; I find that reduces my stress. I text my friends to say I’m thinking of them if I haven’t had time to catch up and I send flowers or an Uber Eats coffee to their work if someone is having a hard day.

Play area opens with a splash Nambour pool just got a whole lot more interesting, with the recent opening of the Splash Park for kids. And there is more water fun to come to the hinterland town.

ambour Aquatic Centre just upped the ante on family fun.

Sunshine Coast residents and visitors will be able to enjoy the new $3.26 million splash pad, which opened at the aquatic centre this month.

The zero-depth and fully accessible splash pad play area forms part of the much-anticipated Splash Park, which was developed with the support of Sunshine Coast Council, the state government’s Works for Queensland program, and pool lessee Belgravia Leisure.

The major investment includes the recent addition of 44 new car parking spaces and two adventure slides, which are set to open later this year.

Councillor David Law says the project will deliver a water wonderland in the heart of the hinterland and be a drawcard for the town.

The centre has an existing 50-metre lap pool and 25-metre indoor pool, which also has a mechanical chair that lowers into the pool for disability access, but the new water play facilities will allow people of all ages to enjoy hours of healthy and active fun.

“It has been a challenging project, and like many construction projects across Australia, we’ve experienced material and supply delays caused by the global pandemic,” Cr Law says.

“I’m thrilled our community will now be able to enjoy early access to the splash pad, prior to the official opening of the splash park later this year.”

The splash pad features 385 square metres of waterplay with two toddler slides, 20 water jet features and tipping buckets.

CALLING ON COAST TRADIES TO BE PART OF THE LEGACY It aims to encourage children’s physical and sensory development through interaction with waterplay elements.

Nambour Aquatic Centre is at 31 Petrie Park Road.

It’s opening house are Monday to Thursday 5.30am to 7pm, Friday 5.30am to 6.30pm, Saturday 7am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 5pm. The cost of entry is $6.05 for adults, $5.10 for children and concession or $18.25 for a family. The new splash pad play area is included in the entry price.

The complete splash park will be officially unveiled with an exciting community event later this year when two new adventure slides, measuring 60 and 67 metres in length will be opened.

The Nambour Aquatic Centre is one of nine councilrun aquatic centres across the region. Others are located at Beerwah, Buderim, Caloundra, Coolum-Peregian, Cotton Tree, Eumundi, Kawana and Palmwoods.

10 Things You Need To Know Before You Buy A Mattress You don’t buy a new bed every day. So you want to get it right.

Especially when you can easily spend $1,000, $2,000, and even $5,000 or more at a department or specialty bedding store (that is, if you don’t know better).

With so many different brands, different prices, and so-called discounts, it can be very confusing to know which mattress to choose. Here are 10 things you need to know before you buy a new mattress.

ONE: Same Mattress, Different Name Have you wondered why no two store sells the same mattress?

Although they look similar, the name at one department store is different to another, which is different to the chain speciality bedding stores.

The truth is, most mattresses in Australia are made by 3 companies. But, to make it diffi cult for you to compare mattresses (and prices) from one store to another, the manufacturer puts a different label on the mattress depending on which store is selling it.

So, the only difference between the $1,000 mattress you are looking at in one store, and the $1,500 mattress in another store, may be the label.

does not affect the feel. But it will make a big difference to how long your mattress will last. Density is what costs money. So before you buy a mattress, be sure to ask about the density of the foams inside.

The first layer (on top of the springs) is usually the lowest density (20-25kg/m2 is usually fi ne for this layer). But many manufacturers continue to use low density (20kg/m2 or lower) for the top comfort layers. While you won’t notice this when you first feel your new mattress, it will become obvious as the foam breaks down and you end up sleeping in a hollow (sometimes as quickly as just a few months).

FIVE: Specialty Foam Memory foam is a term used to describe foams that have a slow ‘bounce’. In other words, once de-pressed, they take a few seconds to regain their original shape. Gel foam is a term used to describe foam that is infused with a special gel substance. Both memory and gel foams feel similar to touch.

But because some people find memory foams hot to sleep on (due to the fact you tend to sink into the foam more), the addition of gel particles encourages air flow and a cooler sleeping surface. Although used as a marketing gimmick by many manufacturers, we do see some benefit in using gel infused memory foam if you tend to feel hot when you sleep.

TWO: Springs Apart from straight foam and straight latex mattresses (which are not very common), all mattresses contain springs.

Some have Bonnell Springs (hour glass shaped springs held between a wire hoop at the top and bottom) or Pocket Springs (individual springs that are independently wrapped in a thin layer of fabric).

No matter what fancy names manufacturers give their springs, or what quantity of springs or zones their mattresses have, they are essentially the same. In fact, most springs are made by one manufacturer in China and shipped in compressed form to mattress companies all around the world including Australia.

Pocket Spring mattresses tend to cost a little more than Bonnell Spring mattresses but offer a genuine advantage in terms of less partner disturbance.

THREE: Edge Support In order to maintain support right to the edges, an extra piece of wire can be connected to the top and bottom hoops of a Bonnell Spring mattresses and a strong foam box can be added to a Pocket Spring Mattress.

Edge supports add genuine benefi t because they allow you to sleep or sit right on the edge of the bed without the side collapsing.

Edge supports should add around $100 to the price of a Bonnell Spring mattress and around $200 to the price of a Pocket Spring mattress depending if the support goes all the way around or if it is just added to the sides.

FOUR: Foam The type of foam used in a mattress will not only affect its feel, it will signifi cantly affect the longevity of the mattress.

Foams are measured in two ways. Firstly there is the feel – hard or soft. Then there is the density – high or low. The feel is what makes one mattress plush and another firm. The density is what makes one foam last longer than another.

You can get a soft mattress in low or high density. Density

SIX: Latex Like foam, not all latex is the same. Genuine latex is highly elastic and will last for many years. Synthetic and hybrid latex becomes brittle over time.

SEVEN: Pillow Top The term pillow top refers to the extra comfort layers usually only on one side of the mattress. This provides an extra soft sleeping surface for those who like a plush feel. Once again, the most important thing is what is inside the pillow top – namely, the density of foam. A low density foam may feel luxurious at fi rst, but as it breaks down you may feel like you are sleeping in a hollow.

Eight: Non-Flip Mattresses In some ways, this is another industry gimmick. The fact that most people don’t like to flip their mattress each month has lead manufacturers to say things like ‘non-flip technology’.

What this really means is that the mattress only has comfort layers on one side. So in a way, this has enabled manufacturers to save money on manufacturing while charging more. A mattress that can be fl ipped will generally last twice as long as a single side mattress (provided you do actually flip it).

NINE: Plush Top

TEN: Are Expensive Mattresses Worth It? As you now know, the internal components of most mattresses are pretty much the same. And the most important part is the comfort layers (i.e. the density / quality of the foam). But no matter what fancy names are given to a mattress or it’s components – including terms relating to the type or number or springs – if you’re paying $5,000 for a mattress, we think you are being ripped off.

Some people like the look and feel of the ‘cloud-like’ comfort layers incorporated into the quilting of some mattresses.

The problem is, this layer usually flattens quickly. A better way to care Sunny Street has changed the way health care is delivered to the vulnerable residents of the Sunshine Coast. Co-founder Sonia Martin explains how. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

S

onia Martin has always been creative, rebellious and very ambitious. So when she walked away from a well-paid managerial role at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in 2018 to start a new medical service from the boot of her car, she lent right into the fear and vulnerability that arose as a result of her deep desire to forge new ground in healthcare in Australia.

She and her friend Dr Nova Evans founded Sunny Street to provide equitable health-care services to people experiencing poverty and homelessness. Sunny Street now employs 35 staff, has a volunteer

workforce of more than 150 and to date has provided over 30,000 conversations and consultations to vulnerable Australians.

Last year, Sunny Street opened its first clinic in Maroochydore, which will offer priority care and support to vulnerable patients.

In October, Ms Martin was recognised when she won the 2021 Health Minister’s Award for Nursing Trailblazers by the Federal Minister for Health and Aged Care, Greg Hunt. For the Nambour mother of four and grandmother of two, it was a major highlight in her 30-year career.

“It was really quite fantastic,” she says.

“It’s a one-of-a kind national award and I’m just really proud that a nurse on the Sunshine Coast won it. It was quite surreal when it all happened. I’m pretty sure I was holding my breath just before he announced the winner and it was really important for me and for nurses nationally, because there’s national recognition around nurse innovation and also the service. It was important for our team, patients and community.”

The award recognises nurse leaders and innovators who lead the way to transform our health and aged-care systems by

affecting costs, improving quality of care and enhancing consumer satisfaction. The award acknowledges nurse-led innovations and models of care which significantly improve health outcomes for the Australian community through evidence-based processes.

Founded by Greg Hunt in 2019, the Trailblazers Award is administered by the Australian College of Nursing . The award is designed to acknowledge that nursing has the solutions to many of the problems that plague the Australian health and aged-care systems. This prestigious award is bestowed on an innovative and outstanding nurse who has demonstrated leadership to bring new thinking to a wide range of health-care challenges.

Ms Martin says she’s a “nursing geek” who loved working in the hospital system, but she knew something had to change in the way we care for vulnerable people who are homeless. She identified that people often just wanted someone to talk to as being homeless often means people are isolated and lonely.

“When I worked in the hospital as a nurse unit manager, I noticed a large number of representations to the Emergency Department from vulnerable and homeless people and it occurred to me that many of these people just needed somewhere they could go for a meal, some

“When I quit my job I thought, I just need to back myself. It would be the one regret of my life if I didn’t back myself, so I left and started from a car boot. I didn’t get a wage for the first 18 months, so I worked other jobs until we got funding.”

Sunny Street has really come to the fore during the pandemic, having tested more than 20,000 people for COVID-19 and vaccinated over 20,000 people. Having opened the Maroochydore centre in 2021, there are expansion plans for more Sunny Street centres around Australia over the next five to seven years.

“Nurses are best placed to step up and go, ‘how do we provide a solution to a social and community problem?’ Sunny Street continues to do that. We have a big push for trialling ideas, putting things into motion and tweaking them. Fear can’t have a role in innovation. I think at some stage, fear turned into stress for me. I used to have a lot of fear in the beginning; what if they don’t like this, what if it doesn’t work?

“After trialling so many aspects of a creative new health system for Australia, fear is more stress now. It’s more something I need to pull apart and break it right down and put it back together with the help of the team. Entrepreneurship in nursing is quite untapped. I’m just not afraid to push the status quo and the traditional way we do things. If we don’t do that, we don’t lead change. That’s why it’s really important to get out, step up and show up. It’s really hard to show up because all of your stress and your vulnerability is out there. I put myself out there every single day and show up and I’m completely fallible.”

ewantin resident Pauline Durham could never have anticipated almost losing her eyesight on two occasions. But standing with her colleague during a shift at a Noosa resort, her work mate noticed something was wrong with Ms Durham’s left eye.

“My eye had turned black and purple,” Ms Durham says. “I went to see my optometrist and he confirmed I had a retinal detachment and was advised to head immediately to Brisbane for a procedure to help save permanent loss of eyesight.

“I was shocked and scared. All I could think about was not seeing my grandkids.”

The 60-year-old was directed by the Brisbane team to ophthalmology surgeon Dr Warren Apel at Caloundra Health Service. “I was booked in that very week on October 1 and was amazed to be arriving back home within a couple of

hours post-surgery,” Ms Durham says.

The successful procedure yielded a 90 per cent return of Ms Durham’s vision on the proviso she see out the recommended recovery time. “It took a mountain of discipline over the two months. Mentally it was one of the biggest roadblocks of my life not being able to do regular things like work, exercise and cooking.”

The extension of ophthalmology services on the Sunshine Coast is thanks to supporters of Wishlist, which has directed more than half a million dollars over the past decade to the ophthalmology unit at Caloundra Health Service.

Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe says a recent $70,000 funding boost plus $430,000 raised from The House the Coast Built appeal in 2011 with Ausmar Homes has enhanced services with state-of-the-art medical equipment including eyesight-saving lasers.

“This equipment has changed the lives of thousands of locals and they have enjoyed access to state-of-the-art treatment right here on the Coast without the inconvenience of travelling to Brisbane,” Ms Rowe says.

But there is still one item left on the charity’s ‘wish list’ – a $48,213 laser to benefit patients at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

“Given everything I went through, I owe an enormous debt of gratitude for the caring and careful guidance of Dr Apel and his team, and to Wishlist for funding the equipment needed to make my procedure possible,” Ms Durham says.

The Wishlist Centre, currently under construction in Birtinya, is also receiving a boost after a $25,000 donation from the Caloundra RSL Sub Branch.

Stage one of the four-level Wishlist Centre is expected to open later this year to provide care and support services to patients and families facing a health crisis.

Stage two will also provide further support for young adults and adolescents.

Wishlist Centre will be the nation’s first facility to offer affordable patient accommodation, primary healthcare and complementary therapies under one roof.

As students across the country prepare to head back to the classroom, Sunshine Coast Grammar School graduates from the Class of 2021 are accepting their university placement offers for the year ahead.

SCIENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY A FASHIONABLE COMBINATION An animal ecology graduate who is expanding her passion for the marine environment by designing swimwear made from recycled fishing nets is a finalist in a national competition for aspiring young female entrepreneurs.

Ellana ‘El’ Pierce, who graduated from the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2020, is one of five finalists from across Australia invited to pitch their ideas to judges ‘shark tank-style’ at Questacon in Canberra on February 16.

The 23-year-old, who currently lives at Banksia Beach, won the popular vote category of the Kickstarter Challenge out of 82 entries that gained more than 8000 votes in total on social media over four months last year.

Ms Pierce, who is moving to Cairns, worked as a research assistant after graduation, including with USC’s Seaweed Research Group at its Bribie Island facility, while pursuing her sustainable swimwear line El Adrift, made from the nylon of fishing nets removed from the ocean.

“I love working hard to get closer to my dream of making a difference while still being creative and using my skills,” she says.

“I am so grateful for the Kickstarter Challenge opportunity and excited to be prepping for the finals.”

Through her business Ms Pierce intends to show that science and technology “can go hand-in-hand with fashion, beauty and fun”.

“It’s easier than we think to make a difference in what we believe in,” she says.

“I aim to clean the ocean of industrial waste and discarded fishing nets that are detrimental to marine species, and to encourage conscious consumerism in the fashion industry.”

ROAD WORK AHEAD FOR BUSY EUMUNDI STRETCH A $2.9 million rehabilitation project on Eumundi-Kenilworth Road is set to begin this month.

Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton says the works will improve the quality of a 2.7-kilometre stretch of the road between the Bunya Road roundabout and the Bruce Highway overpass to Memorial Drive.

“We know that over 3000 people use this stretch of road daily, including heavy vehicles, and we want to see each and every one get home sooner and safer than before,”

CHILDHOOD ENCOUNTERS INSPIRE BOOK OF TRUE TALES Nestled on an inlet of the Red Sea, Massawa was the playground for Caloundra grandmother Eufrasia Gagliardo, who realised a lifelong dream of becoming an author by launching her debut book.

Living on the Pearl of the Red Sea: The Unique People of Massawa is a collection of true short stories that gives readers a glimpse into life in this part of the world during the 1940s and 50s.

Mrs Gagliardo’s childhood home was a fantastical place with a backdrop featuring

the impressive architecture of Massawa and Taulud that spoke volumes about its less than idyllic history, with a mash of Egyptian, Ottoman, Turkish, Arabic and Italian buildings.

But it was the people Mrs Gagliardo encountered that she has carried with her in her heart ever since she left the city in her twenties.

Mrs Gagliardo moved to the Sunshine Coast in the 1980s with her husband Gianni and three children.

She became a teacher and helped to

establish their long-standing family business, Mar Gra. Family and business demands have kept Mrs Gagliardo busy, but she decided last year that the time was right for her to finally write the book she had always felt a calling to create.

Living on the Pearl of the Red Sea pays homage to the cultural melting pot that saw Italians, Greeks, Muslims, French, English, Sudanese, Eritreans Arabs, Dankalis, British Indians, Abyssinians and other Red Sea peoples all living together in harmony.

The unique people, like the Mother Teresa of Eritrea, the oyster man, the lady who was cursed and the leprosy crusaders, entered Mrs Gagliardo’s life at pivotal moments and shaped her world view.

“It was an emotional roller coaster, writing this book,” Mrs Gagliardo says.

“My memories were very strong for some of the people and others were entering my dreams as I began to concentrate on my book. They would appear and say, ‘Don’t forget about me.

Write about me’.”

STUDENTS BIG CLEAN Sunshine Coast Council is sending a big thanks to all the students who participated in the 2021 Sunshine Coast Schools Beach Clean Up. Over six weeks, Sunshine Coast students hit the sand and enthusiastically went to work to clean up rubbish from the region’s beaches in time for turtle nesting season.

The event proved to be an enormous success with 686 students, parents and teachers from 10 schools removing almost 100 kgs of rubbish from 14 beaches across the Sunshine Coast.

A number of schools participated including St John’s College, Coolum State School, Meridian State College, Pacific Lutheran College, Unity College, Chancellor State College, Coolum Beach Christian College, Caloundra State High School, North Arm State School and Baringa State School.

Happy New Year! After a roller coaster ride for the tourism industry throughout 2021, I can’t tell you how much I have looked forward to 2022. But I’m sure you’d agree it wasn’t quite the start to the year we had hoped for with COVID-19 case numbers continuing to rise and the impact this has had on individuals and businesses.

For us the big news has, of course, been the return of our interstate visitors, who are critical for our tourism industry as they spend more and stay longer in the region.

To welcome back these visitors in style we joined forces with 21 craft breweries across our region. In fact, the Sunshine Coast is home to the largest number of

breweries per capita in the country, making us Australia’s craft beer capital! To celebrate borders reopening we hosted an activation for our interstate visitors across all our breweries and generated national media coverage for the initiative.

It was also pleasing to see our accommodation was near to capacity over the Christmas period and has also held up okay for the rest of January. However, during this time it has been a challenge for other tourism businesses to manage their operations, with many restaurants, attractions and the retail stores continuing to do it tough. For some, it was a struggle to find the staff to keep the doors open and I really feel for those businesses that consequently took the hard decision to reduce hours or close over the peak period.

Managing operations through increasing case numbers and ongoing travel hesitancy remains a huge challenge for tourism businesses. But, with borders open once again there is a huge opportunity to capitalise on our interstate markets and we couldn’t be happier to say we have our promotional activities back in a big way across the southern states.

Once we can get through these bumps there is certainly smoother waters ahead and looking towards 2022 with a lot of optimism for our tourism industry.

This year will be another busy one with many consultation projects where council will be looking for community input. Join friendly club for the new year Charity calls for donation pause Vinnies Queensland is asking Sunshine Coast residents to temporarily hold on to their donations to its retail shops.

This is due to a pandemic volunteer shortage that has left the op shop struggling to keep up with the community’s generosity. Regional retail operations manager Linda De Blasio says Vinnies shops in the state are facing volunteer shortages as many are required to isolate due to the current omicron outbreak. Family history group’s next meeting

RACE TRACK UPGRADE One of the state’s top horse-racing venues is expected to bolster the industry for years to come, after an $8.9 million redevelopment.

An all-weather Polytrack was installed at Corbould Park in November, to complete stage one of the upgrade. It provides a vital back-up for when conditions prevent the grass track from being used, ensuring

meetings go ahead. Improvements were also made to irrigation, drainage, bridges and rails to complete stage two in December. The revamp is supported by a $2.5 million boots via the Racing Infrastructure Fund, and co-funding contributions from Racing Queensland, Sunshine Coast Turf Club and the Sunshine Coast Racing Unit Trust.

The Caloundra Family History Research group’s next meeting will be held on February 17 where the guest speaker will be Shauna Hicks, a genealogist, qualified archivist, librarian and family and local historian.

Cr Ted Hungerford Division seven Well I hope you had a rewarding and restful festive season and you’re recharged, ready and raring for 2022!

Unfortunately, my year is off to a rough start after my wife Julie and I and our dog were hit by a car on Wises Road last week.

While Julie and I both suffered multiple injuries, we were very lucky that things didn’t turn out a lost worse. Our dog is also on the mend after a losing a bit of skin from her paws.

Despite the pain and shock, what really struck me the most about this unfortunate incident was the incredible work of the ambulance officers and hospital staff who treated us at Sunshine Coast University Hospital – not to mention the quick-thinking and care of the off-duty

doctor and registered nurse who rushed to our aid immediately after the incident.

We’ve all read and heard how stretched our medical professionals are as a result of the COVID pandemic, but it’s not until you actually see it firsthand that you can fully appreciate just how tough they’re doing it.

Many of the staff who treated us were on the back end of 12- and 18-hour shifts but you wouldn’t have known it given how incredibly caring and patient they were with us and everyone in their care.

I want to extend a huge thank you to all of our ambulance and hospital staff. You’re truly amazing at what you do and we’re truly fortunate to have such dedicated professionals caring for our community.

A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY

FROM BAD TO WORSE

Jane Stephens is finding joy in the little things in life, including a simple game called Wordle.

In a world seemingly full of bad decisions, Ashley Robinson is reflecting on some of his own.

A

new artistic installation in a garden on the USC Sippy Downs campus declares boldly: “Sometimes it’s the little things.”

And at these times of uncertainty, it sure is.

A little thing might be spotting a summer fruit you love on the supermarket shelf, despite the supply chain issues. It might be a little message of love from your beloved, left in a location where he knows you will find it.

It is using the recipe your friend entrusted to you, even though it is her family’s creation. The driver who lets you in with a smile. The lizard sun-baking on your windowsill. The friend who was thinking of you and just wanted to say hello.

The little things: treasures, all.

And a little thing lighting up my life is an online game called Wordle.

The app, built by a software engineer in the US for his word-loving wife, has taken the world by storm these past weeks and it is breathtaking in its simplicity.

Players try to guess a five-letter word.

After the first effort, they are told whether any of the letters are in the secret word and whether they are in the correct place.

You have six tries to get it right.

The best part of Wordle is that you can play only once a day: a single word is released at midnight New York time every day. Everyone all around the world gets the same word. And that’s it. It is undemanding, has no ads, and offers no repeat goes. One word is all you get.

It has become part of my morning routine: warm up the body with exercise and limber up the mind with Wordle.

It takes mere minutes of brain power but is a fabulous start to the day.

There is certainly daily joy in the little things, but from these, big things grow. In Wordle’s case, a global community has been built. It grew in the Petri dish of isolation for Josh Wardle, who made it up for him and his wife to play last year. Then he shared it with friends and family on their WhatsApp group. They loved it and he released it to the world in October.

On November 1, 90 people played it.

Within a fortnight the Wordle world had a population of 250,000 people. The latest available figures are that more than three million people are now playing it every day.

Uncomplicated. Simple. Togetherness.

Little things are so often the things that really count.

oor decisions come pretty naturally to me. I probably would be an all-time champion if it was an Olympic sport. I have always thought there were no worthy challengers for my dumb decisions, but now I am not so sure – it seems quite a few have popped up over the last couple of years.

I will give you a couple of examples of the quality they are up against. My first big mistake was probably back in the ’70s when I had a perfectly good rotary Mazda.

Someone told me that the motors in them could blow up so I decided to trade it in on a new-model Ford Cortina, which was the biggest lemon I have ever owned. It fell apart instantly as it came out of warranty. I used to see my old car cruising around the Coast looking mint, and he paid about half of what I had.

To fix this poor decision I traded the Cortina in on Nissan ute, which rusted out immediately after it came out of warranty.

I found out years later that that particular shipment of Nissans had nearly been submerged on a container ship on the way over to Australia. To make it worse I owed a fortune on that bucket of crap after I had

added on the HP losses from the other two cars. Now that is just a small sample. Oh another popped into my brain when I was typing – I once wore lemon-coloured trousers to the races when I had a touch of gastric, so I guess you can figure out how that worked out for me. Yuck.

So the contenders are the boffin who designed that off-ramp at Caloundra’s Bruce Highway turn-off – he may be related to the one who put that turning lane in at Moffat. But the field gets stronger when I wonder who at the BOM could miss that deluge aftermath of the cyclone that walloped Wide Bay with no warning, but then made a decision to close all beaches on the eastern seaboard because of a possible tsunami from the Solomons? With all due respect to our friends in the Pacific and not to make light of their loss, it certainly seemed to me a possible massive overreaction over here.

Yes I know better safe than sorry, but my list of contenders could go on if I start on some of the COVID decisions.

But I am comforted by the fact that I don’t feel lonely at the top any more; there are a few geniuses with me.

ur formative years make or break our taste in music and movies (and men!).

There truly are some wonderful movies currently on our big screens and if you love a trip down memory lane then you need to see Ghostbusters: Afterlife. When a single mum and her two kids arrive in a small town, they discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.

The movie’s DNA is beautifully nostalgic and has shades of The Goonies when it comes to humour and comical suspense, and there are lots of tilts of the hat to the original Ghostbusters movie.

You see I adore the movies. Always have. One of my earliest memories is my grandma taking me to the heart of Brisbane in the city to see E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. I was eight. I fell in love with the movies and with ET. I was forever thankful to my grandmother for introducing me to a world that transported me to so many other worlds. I love the smell of popcorn.

I love the air-conditioning. I love the trailers. I am even a weirdo who loves the credits as I am always in awe of just

how many people make a movie.

E.T. was released in 1982 and it was a solid year for good movies. I soon spread my wings and watched all sort of genres of films. To this day I will watch and enjoy any movie except horror. I am too chicken to watch humanity inflict evil and cruelty upon others.

But it was two years later in 1984 that the big guns came out for me that remain some of my favourite movies, including Romancing the Stone, Splash, Footloose and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

However, it was Ghostbusters that stole my heart. I had a T-shirt and hyper-colour coffee cups with the Ghostbusters logo on them. I would blast the Ray Parker jr song on my cassette player from my bedroom for hours on end. The world was obsessed with Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson as the awesome foursome jumped in the Ecto-1 with their proton packs and took on Slimer ghost, Stay Puft the Marshmallow Man, The Gatekeeper and Gozer The Destroyer.

So, during these crazy times maybe a trip to the movies will make you remember simpler times when we were kids. Who you gonna call?

ack in the 16th century, women in Lima developed a personal clothing style that consisted of face veils and long skirts that became a symbol for freedom in the Peruvian capital.

These women were known as the tapadas limenas across the world because of their peculiar garments, which showed only one eye.

“The tapada is possibly the most iconic symbol of the historic centre of Lima; they were fantastic characters who inhabited our streets from the very foundation of the city in 1535 until the end of the 19th century,” Martin Bogdanovich, director of Prolima, an agency promoting tourism and the recovery of the historic centre of Lima, says. “Part of our recovery plan for the historic centre is to rescue these symbols.

We don’t just want to fix public spaces or churches, but also bring back these traditions that give us an identity and put us on the map.”

In October, tapada statues flooded the streets of downtown Lima, as part of a competition called the Saya y Manto.

The famous attire was a tradition of Castilian and Moorish origin that came to the then capital of the Viceroyalty in the 16th century.

“At a time when women had many limitations and their life was framed in the private sphere, going out without being recognised allowed them to meet people or go to places that otherwise would have

been totally impossible,” Sandro Parruco, a historian at the Catholic University of Peru, says. “Going out covered put their identity in a safe place.”

Flora Tristan, a Franco-Peruvian writer, says nowhere else in the world gave that amount of freedom to women, not even Paris, adding this custom allowed women to go to clubs, political rallies and theatres without being recognised and, therefore, without being judged.

At the end of the 18th century, the old Peruvian newspaper Mercurio Peruano wrote about an imaginary androgynous city in which men were covered from head to toe so as not to be recognised when they go to homosexual parties.

“It was an indirect description of the city of Lima at a time when the covered ones could be found in contexts of prostitution,” Ms Parruco explains.

But this excess of freedom did not please the Church, which unsuccessfully tried to ban the tradition. “The women were so comfortable and satisfied with this practise that they were outraged and continually asked their husbands to protest against these ban attempts,” Ms Parruco says.

In the end, it was not the Church that brought an end to this custom. It was the French and English styles of fashion that increasingly appealed to the women of Lima, to the point that by the mid-19th century, only lower-class women continued to follow the tradition.

NDIS – WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

DIS stands for National Disability Insurance Scheme.

The NDIS provides support to eligible people with intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive and psychosocial disability. Early intervention supports can also be provided for eligible people with disability or children with developmental delay.

The NDIS is not a welfare system.

The NDIS is designed to help people get the support they need so their skills and independence improve over time.

Key words to support your understanding of NDIS include: Permanent and significant disability: a permanent disability means your disability is likely to be lifelong. A significant disability has a substantial impact on your ability to complete everyday activities. Supports and services: assistance or products that help a person in their daily life and help them participate in the community and reach their goals. Early intervention: providing support to a person, either a child or an adult, as early as possible to reduce the impacts of disability or developmental delay and to build their skills and independence.

There are around 4.3 million Australians who have a disability. Within the next five years the NDIS will provide an estimated 500,000 Australians who have permanent and significant disability with funding for supports and services. For many people, it will be the first time they receive the disability support they need.

NDIS provides funding to eligible people based on their individual needs.

What types of supports are funded?

The types of supports that the NDIS may fund for participants include: daily personal activities, transport to enable participation in community, social, economic and daily life activities, workplace help to allow a participant to successfully get or keep employment in the open or supported labour market, therapeutic supports including behaviour support, help with household tasks to allow the participant to maintain their home environment, help to a participant by skilled personnel in aids or equipment assessment, set up and training, home modification design and construction, mobility equipment, and mobility equipment, and vehicle modifications.

There are some kinds of supports that will not be funded or provided by the NDIS

The NDIS Act and the rules made under the NDIS Act also tell us which supports will not be funded by the NDIS. The NDIS cannot fund a support that is: • the responsibility of another government system or community service • not related to a person’s disability • relates to day-to-day living costs that are not related to a participant’s support needs, or • is likely to cause harm to the participant or pose a risk to others.

All supports funded must meet all the NDIS funding criteria. One of these criteria is that the support must be most appropriately funded or provided through the NDIS. NDIS can’t fund supports that are more appropriately funded or provided either: • by other general systems of service delivery or support services, such as a

workers compensation scheme • under a universal service obligation that mainstream services must provide to all Australians, such as schools and public hospitals • as a reasonable adjustment under discrimination law, such as making places or venues accessible for you.

In short, if it’s more appropriate for another service to provide the community and mainstream supports you need, NDIS can’t fund it in your plan.

Remember, all supports funded must meet all the NDIS funding criteria.

If NDIS responsible for funding the support, it must also meet all the other NDIS funding criteria before we can include it in your plan.

She achieved her Masters in Science with a high distinction and has completed the Stanford University Managing Teams for Innovation and Success program.

MARKET BOUNCE DRIVEN BY SCHOOL DATES AND BORDER OPENING An extra two weeks of holidays have given buyers the time they need to take the plunge. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

T

he recent Queensland border opening without the need of a Border Pass and the change in the start of school year has pumped up the confidence of southern buyers says REIQ Sunshine Coast zone chair Matt Diesel.

“The confidence levels have kicked up significantly in the last week or two,” he says. “We have definitely seen buyer interest levels pick up again. They have gone to another level.”

Now that Queensland’s first school term start date has been delayed by two weeks to February 7, it may also mean further market action in the short term. It gives families moving to the Coast and those already here but still trying to find their feet around school arrangements and home ownership, the extra time to get settled.

“We have got a lot of southerners who have got rental properties,” Mr Diesel says.

“They don’t understand the market up here. They are trying to get the feel for it.

“In the short term I think this will

translate into more sales as they are obviously looking while they don’t have the time pressure on them. When they see the right one, they will jump straight on it.”

Direct collective’s Mal Cayley believes the shift in the market goes a lot deeper than a change in the school term dates and the state border opening.

“All the buying decisions were already being made and yes, it might give people the opportunity for more scope to do it now, but there’s a lot more depth to it than the extra weeks,” he says.

“I believe people will be buying in greater volume from they have been anyway because what is truly driving the Coast is the complete shift in our economy and the opportunity that presents for more people,” he adds.

“I don’t believe it’s because of those two weeks. I believe it’s because the fundamentals of the Coast are so strong.”

The Coast’s residential property market action hasn’t slowed during the summer holidays, Mr Diesel observes.

But with all the large home has to offer on the inside, it’s the outside deep-water location that tipped the scales for the buyers.

The pre-auction sale of $2.55 million achieved a massive record for Mountain Creek; some three-quarters of a million above any other sale in the area said listing agent Dan Rowling of Rowling & Co. “It’s by far the highest in the area,” he said.

The successful Buderim-based buyer wanted to be nearer the water Mr Rowling said.

“And it’s seeing the future value in a waterfront block,” he added.
