Learning to live with

COVID Those who are fully vaccinated need not worry about a loss of lifestyle when the border reopens and new COVID cases inevitably enter our state.

global outbreaks expert says Sunshine Coast people shouldn’t fear a major loss of lifestyle when the state’s borders reopen, but will have to make small behavioural changes to learn to live with COVID. Queensland will drop quarantine restrictions for arrivals from COVID hotspots this month when the state is at 80 per cent double dose vaccinations.

Dr Ian Norton, founder of Respond Global in Noosa, says the risk of community transmission will “no doubt” increase, but it is a fact we will have to get used to.

Dr Norton is predicting Queensland will record about 200 infections per day when community transmissions stabilise, with about 10 per cent of those needing hospitalisation.

But for most fully vaccinated Queenslanders, he says, the risks of serious illness are lower and there are other ways to reduce the chances

of infection. He also says the Sunshine Coast is well placed with its outdoor lifestyle to have lower likelihood of rapid seeding than dense city areas.

Dr Norton, a former WHO emergency coordinator, says people will learn to adapt to COVID being a normal part of life.

“We shouldn’t be fearful of a major lifestyle change for us,” he says.

“We should understand that everywhere else in the world has had to learn to live with this including New Zealand right now, places for a long time that were like us and free of illness.

“We can’t continue to deny that COVID is a part of life and it’s not going to go away.

“People who think we can outlast it and shut our borders and stay closed for 10 or 15 years, even then we probably won’t outlast it.

“It’s going to be with us for life.

We’re not going to ever get rid of COVID. It’s just a matter of how many subsequent waves will come and how we can adapt and make sure we’re vaccinated and protected.”

Dr Norton says people can make simple behavioural changes such as avoiding crowded locations like busy malls, spending more time in the great outdoors and not visiting family and friends if you are feeling unwell.

Then of course there’s social distancing, hand hygiene and getting tested at the first sign of symptoms which will remain part of life, and the option of masks.

“Make sure that if you’re visiting vulnerable [people] that everyone is vaccinated. Cancel the trip, or cancel the party if anyone is unwell; don’t continue if you have aches or pains, instead go and get tested,” says Dr Norton.

“The over-the-counter tests, think about how to use them to ensure nothing else is going on.

“If you have symptoms, get a PCR and get diagnosed but don’t go to work, don’t go to the pub or visit mum and dad, but get tested and isolate until you get your results.

“Choose activities that are great about the Sunshine Coast, the outdoor lifestyle during summer.”

Dr Norton says on the plus side, lockdowns will be a restriction of the past and extreme contact tracing will also be relaxed.

“I think that would be a real shame if we lose our nerve and lock down after saying that we were going to open. I don’t think that’s okay,” he says.

“Lockdown is a very blunt instrument for the control of outbreaks, honestly they just really affect the poor and people who can’t work from home. We can’t look at lockdown as our response.

“Let’s become more sensible about our approach to contact tracing so that casual contacts, if they’re vaccinated, just have to watch for symptoms and don’t have to quarantine.”

Dr Norton says we shouldn’t become fixated on the number of daily infections once our population reaches the vital 80 per cent vaccination threshold.

“We’ll all have to get very used to the fact that we will have cases in Queensland every day and really that’s not so much of a number we should be worried about,” he says.

“It should be a question of how many of those 200 people are vulnerable or higher risk because of their underlying medical conditions or have chosen not to be vaccinated and all of those people worry me because they’re the ones that will end up going into hospital.”

Dr Norton says people should not expect Queensland’s case load to rise suddenly.

“This isn’t going to happen on the 18th of December but over time as people come across the border and seed the infection amongst us,” he says.

VISION FOR COAST ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE Members of all three tiers of government are throwing their support behind a bold vision to secure a Sunshine Coast Entertainment Centre in the Maroochydore CBD. A visual concept of the proposed venue was unveiled in November by Federal Member for Fairfax, Ted O’Brien, who is advocating to leverage the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games to secure state and federal funding for the venue.

State Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson and division four councillor Joe Natoli are publicly backing Mr O’Brien’s proposal. “The 2032 Games are our chance to ensure that right legacy infrastructure for the Sunshine Coast is built now,” Ms Simpson says. “This potential venue would be important not only to service the needs of the Olympics and Paralympics, but even better it will enable us to secure a performing arts and convention centre here in Maroochydore CBD.” Stage one of the proposal suggests the venue host the Olympic basketball preliminaries, which are earmarked in the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games masterplan. This will enable the proposed venue to unlock significant funding through the state and federal government’s 50-50 agreement on critical Games infrastructure. Cr Natoli says it is important all three levels of government work together towards a clear vision for the legacy projects they want for the Sunshine Coast. “The Olympics presents us with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Cr Natoli says. “We have to put whatever differences there are between levels of government aside for the greater good. If we don’t come together, if we don’t have a crystalised vision and we don’t have unity then we are going to miss out.” As Special Envoy for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Mr O’Brien welcomes support from his state and local government counterparts.

Sunshine Coast Council has released a snapshot of the Environment Levy’s 2020/21 financial year achievements.

The Environment Levy helps make numerous initiatives possible. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the program makes a significant contribution to maintaining and enhancing the natural assets and liveability of the Sunshine Coast. “Each year the program continues to grow, with $12.8 million having been allocated in the last financial year (2020/21) to a suite of initiatives across our region,” Mayor Jamieson says. “Programs like our outstanding Land for Wildlife program – which has the largest membership of any local government area participating in the national program – has more than 1200 registered property owners, resulting in more than 8000 hectares of privately-owned land being managed with conservation objectives in mind.”

A night in Cuba Local charity Refocus is holding a Cuban-themed fundraiser to help support its work with First Nations children. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

charity focusing on improving the wellbeing of First Nations children living on the Sunshine Coast is calling on the community to help make a difference.

Refocus has been delivering wellbeing support services to the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay and Gympie regions since 2010.

The charity stands for ‘Redirecting and Empowering Families through Culturally Unique Services’ and provides a range of programs to support children to reach their full potential. On December 4, it will hold A Night in Cuba, a fundraiser to support children in care.

Refocus CEO Darcy Cavanagh, who first began working within the youth and child protection sector in 1998, knows firsthand the need for this type of support

“My interest in this line of work comes from my brief experience of being placed in the foster care system with my two brothers and the life that followed being returned home,” he says.

“A lot of my experience, or so-called expertise, has come from my lived experience and learning from every person that I have come into contact with through my childhood and working career.

“All these experiences led to the foundation of creating an organisation that focuses on the people and creates opportunity for people’s voices to be heard.

“The service that is not just about ticking boxes and reaching targets, however, reaches the heart of a person and creates meaningful change and a sense of belonging.”

Beginning Refocus with six staff, now with a team of 62, the charity supports thousands of individuals through a variety of programs across its catchment area, with a specific focus on children under 18.

Programs include family wellbeing services, family participation programs, NDIS support services, foster and kinship care as well as Aboriginal medical service Gunyah of Wellness.

“Refocus is all about supporting a person to reach their full potential and sometimes for a person to reach their optimum self, there is a lot of healing to do along the way,” Mr Cavanagh says.

“Refocus’ ultimate goal is to shift a person from believing they are not worthy or good enough to a place where they know they matter when one believes they matter; this allows their true soul to shine and everything is possible.”

The goal of the fundraiser event is to raise $100,000 for Refocus to provide intense support packages, including occupational and speech therapists, psychology and specialty paediatrics and other specialist support to children.

“We currently have over 100 First

Nations children in our care, so this equates to $1000 worth of intense supports each,” Mr Cavanagh says.

“This support will help them and their carer families immensely and set them up to feel safe and secure.”

The event, at Novotel Twin Waters, will give guests a chance to be immersed in Cuban flavours, rhythm, sound and dance.

Focusing on the future Peregian Beach’s James Norquay is not going to let the fact he is legally blind get in the way of his passion for taking photos and his burgeoning career as a photographer. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

I

t took an observant teacher to realise James Norquay wasn’t naughty – he just couldn’t see the board. It was 2011 and he was in Year six. He mucked around a bit in class and it was assumed he didn’t want to do his work. No one knew was he was gradually losing his sight due to three undiagnosed brain tumours. Once his teacher and parents realised the reason he wasn’t doing his work was because he couldn’t see, he was swiftly taken for an eye test and an MRI and within three days found himself at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. Two

“The way I describe it is, have you ever watched one of those movies where they die and you see ghosts coming out of the body? That’s how I felt for a lot of it,” Mr

Norquay says. “My body was there, but I wasn’t in my body. I felt like I was floating above. I was 11 and an active kid, then within a week I was in a hospital bed with six or seven doctors semi-circling around my bed. I thought, what the hell

is going on?”

Mr Norquay llooks back on his 10 1 months in hospital as a time h he h was “spoilt” by his h mum and grandma, who gr gave ga him gifts like an iPad and art supplies.

It was su there the he found his creative spark. cre “I found my way to drawing and sketching and at first, I was sketching guns, robots, destruction – dark, horrible and intense drawings. I look back now and realise it was my way to express to people what I was feeling. At 11, I didn’t even know what they were doing to me half the time. I was able to guide my mum on how I was feeling without using my words.

“Towards the end of my chemo treatment, I started playing with watercolours and pastels and really vibrant colours. For me, it was my transition of what I was feeling at the time, without knowing it. I went from painting the Terminator to butterflies on rocks and beach paintings.”

But it was when Mr Norquay discovered photography in high school

PROFILE that his true passion emerged. “I was taking photos with my iPad and phone,” he says. “I used to take a lot of photos of menus and things I wanted to see better.

“Once I’d taken the photo, I could pinch and zoom and see what I was looking at more clearly. I did a certificate in photography and it really pushed me to pick up this new passion for photography.

Apart from the fact I can capture beauty in my work, it gives me back my vision and I can see the world through my process.”

Nerve damage in his eyes resulting from the cancer has left Mr Norquay legally blind, but he’s forging ahead with life and excited about pursuing a career as a professional photographer.

“Everything is blurry,” he says. “I can’t read signs. I don’t know what 100 per cent sight is anymore. I see through a very small tunnel and everything inside that tunnel is washed out and blurry. But when I take photos, I can quickly zoom in and see what’s there and it shows me so much more than I can see with my own eyes.

“My goal is to work as a professional photographer. Photography is my greatest passion. If you’re doing what you love, you’re not working a day of your life so you’re enjoying every bit of it.”

Mr Norquay enjoys working with people and making new connections.

He loves photographing landscapes –

particularly sunrise and sunset shots – and offers his services as a commercial photographer capturing product shots, weddings and portraits.

He lives with his parents and little brother in Peregian Springs. He also has his beautiful guide dog Jonah, who has brought a new level of mobility and companionship to his life.

“Transitioning from a long cane to a guide dog, I can see now just how much more trust I put into Jonah and how he guides me,” Mr Norquay says. “It’s really amazing; it takes so much stress off me. It’s easy as I go about my day. I used to look like a dinosaur, with my head so close to the ground sometimes when I was using my cane. Now I can look up, strong and proud, and trust that Jonah will guide me where I need to go.

“I’m not gonna lie – I had my years coming out of hospital where it was very difficult,” he says. “My mates didn’t know how to react or evolve around me. But now I feel like I’m on such a bright, clear pathway. I know what I like to do. My first job will be what I love doing. I’m very blessed and happy.”

IT’S GOOD TO TALK The Breaking the Stigma calendar reminds us all to have frank conversations about men’s mental health. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

T

his year there in an extra-special motivation behind a popular charity calendar featuring men from across the region, especially after its production almost didn’t happen.

Photographer Anthony Webb has launched the fourth annual Breaking the Stigma calendar, an initiative he began to help raise awareness and spark important conversations among men regarding mental health.

“The whole point is to try and have that conversation,” he says. “Staying strong doesn’t mean you have to stay silent. Mental health in general is the top of everything, especially these days in relation to the impacts from COVID.”

The calendar has a strong focus on local tradies, who Mr Webb says is one of the main target groups when it comes to men’s mental health.

“I’ve got a lot of friends who are tradies that I’ve seen struggle. I’m seeing how difficult it is to get tradies right now. They are working six, sometimes seven days and they are in high demand.

“Obviously they want the work and want the money but it makes it harder to be able to spend time with family.

“I think having those conversations is most important above all else. There is such a persona about not being able to speak up or have a conversation or a chat because men aren’t supposed to have

emotions or show how they feel. The worst part is they bottle it up and bury it and just keep working.”

Mr Webb says it is important to make time to check in with your mates or go and have a feed after work.

No stranger to mental health struggles, the photographer of more than 20 years says the 2022 calendar almost didn’t happen. “This year was a tough year for me. I almost gave up and didn’t do the calendar, but I thought, this isn’t about me; it’s bigger.

“There are so many people who have struggled with mental health this year so I think there was a drive for me to continue to do it purely because I know I’m not the only one going through struggles.

“It’s amazing to see how being part of this can change someone’s life.”

The 2022 edition features 12 local men and Mr Webb says he enjoys spending time getting to know each person and their story.

“Many of them haven’t been in front of a camera before,” he says. “I probably spend 20 minutes with each person and have a chat and get to know them and I’m still friends with everyone who has been part of the calendar in the past.”

The 2022 Breaking the Stigma calendar is out now with all proceeds going to Beyond Blue. Local company Push Productions, charity IFYS and local supporters have also come on board to help make this project possible.

NEW CLUB COMING

Construction is set to begin on a stylish community club in the heart of a growing area.

After more than five years of planning, The Bower Tree will be built in Sippy Downs.

The not-for-profit Boldbridge Group, which manages and operates Nambour RSL, has partnered with design and construction company Paynters to develop the venue, due to be completed in early 2023.

Boldbridge Group CEO Suzanne Long says the venue “will be an inviting place for locals and visitors alike to enjoy live music, a sophisticated wine bar, function room, meeting rooms, casual and a la carte dining”.

Paynters managing director Brett Johnston says, “Over the coming 13 months of construction, approximately 100 direct jobs will be supported, including trades and other associated skilled workers.”

SHOPPING CENTRE HELPS MAKE THE CHANGE A new initiative to boost drink-container recycling through a local shopping centre will help raise funds for a Sunshine Coast children’s charity.

Kawana Shoppingworld is the first shopping centre in the region to sign up to the Partners for Change initiative, which will encourage shoppers to recycle thousands of used drink containers each year.

The initiative is part of Queensland’s Containers for Change scheme, and the centre will donate the refunds to The Board Meeting charity.

The Board Meeting chairman Mark Skinner says the recycling initiative will help the charity continue its important work.“In the last 12 months alone, The Board Meeting has helped 220 local families with children with disabilities by providing them more than $260,000 in funding,” he says.

“We are so excited to be involved with this Kawana Shoppingworld and Containers for Change scheme initiative and look forward to continuing our work in the community through this support.”

Ken Noye, chief executive of Container Exchange – the not-for-profit organisation that runs the Containers for Change scheme – says recycling containers is “a job for everyone”.

“The customers that recycle through these bins will not only provide a benefit to the beautiful natural environment on the Sunshine Coast, they’ll also be assisting a wonderful organisation,” Mr Noye says.

AWARD FOR PROJECT The Mooloolaba Boardwalk and Parkland Project has been awarded for its excellence and environmental responsibility in design by the Australian Institute of Horticulture Inc (AIH).

The 2021 Green Space Urban Award recognises this signature project’s commitment in preserving the iconic Norfolk pines, which have become sentinels of the Mooloolaba foreshore.

“It’s a great honour to be recognised

by AIH, which has been encouraging and developing relationships with like-minded organisations to deliver the highest quality results for horticultural projects since 1960,” Sunshine Coast Council division four councillor Joe Natoli says.

“The Mooloolaba Foreshore Revitalisation project embodies the AIH commitment by increasing public beachfront parkland by 40 per cent – providing significant social, economic, environmental and cultural benefits for locals, visitors and the broader Sunshine Coast region. The first part of the new Northern Parkland in Mooloolaba opened on November 9, 2021.

BANKING ON DONATIONS TO HELP VINNIES APPEAL A Caloundra bank has donated $1000 to kickstart the 2021 Vinnies Christmas Appeal, giving local families and individuals in need welcome relief this Christmas.

As the weather warms up and Queenslanders flock to the coast, the Queensland Police Service and Maritime Safety Queensland have joined forces to warn of the risks of alcohol consumption on the water.

Skippers of hire boats are being targeted, with almost half of last year’s drink driving vessel offences occurring within this group.

Sunshine Coast Water Police Senior Constable Murray Lyons says ignorance is no excuse.

“Safety first is paramount on the waters. Anytime you’re operating a vessel, you have a responsibility to ensure the safety of yourself and others,” he says.

“That extends to ensuring you’re under a blood alcohol limit of 0.05

– the same as it applies on our roads.

“We’re not the fun police, but we will conduct random breath testing and take enforcement action if you’re doing the wrong thing.

“I’ve seen the heartache serious vessel collisions can cause and alcohol, water and inexperience are a recipe for disaster.

“It is also important to remember that you might still be over the limit the next morning if you have had a big night.

“There are many myths around alcohol but you need to ensure you leave yourself time for your body to process the alcohol.”

Myths: Drinking milk, coffee or water, taking cold or hot showers, exercising, vomiting or getting out in the fresh air will help you sober up. While they may help you feel slightly better, none of these will help the sobering-up process.

Facts: Sobering up takes time. The body of a normal healthy person can only break down approximately one standard drink an hour. There’s nothing you can do to speed up the rate alcohol leaves your system.

Mooloolaba Rotary Telling Stories Competition has wrapped up its sixth year with Annabelle Morley taking the win.

The Year seven student from St Andrew’s Anglican College wrote one of more than 100 entries received from over 30 schools.

Each short story entry had to be written under the title ‘I should have waited’. Annabelle’s story is written in diary form from the perspective of a Spartan warrior whose brother was one of the 300 soldiers defending Sparta in the Battle of Thermopylae. He questions the point of war and the fact it never ends.

For her efforts, Annabelle was awarded the Professor Gary Crew Trophy and a cash prize.

Mooloolaba Rotary president Cathy Wright congratulated Annabelle and all the students who entered the competition.

“We are delighted with the success of the competition and appreciate the support of so many schools and their teachers and, of course, the parents of the entrants,” Ms Wright says.

This year’s judging panel from The University of the Sunshine Coast’s creative writing team included Ginna Brock, Sara Hutchinson, Natasha Elyssa Turgoose, Kel Purcill, Jay Ludowyke, Paul Williams and Emeritus Professor Gary Crew, who are all published authors.

The judging panel found the entries innovative and inspiring.

Obesity needs to be named and shamed. To turn this truculent tide we need to look at it front-on and not like what we see in the mirror.

It is no longer about being “healthy at any size” but about encouraging people to be a fair size for their frame.

Too many Australians will die waiting for sugary drinks to be taxed into their rightful place even though Britain, Ireland, France, Mexico and South Africa do it.

Obesity is complicated and it is not arrived at through simply eating too much food, although highly processed, rubbish stuff plays a big part.

We got lost nutritionally about the time white bread and soft drink became cheaper than real food such as fresh fruit and whole milk.

We can’t rely on governments to save us any more than we can expect food manufacturers and advertisers to be responsible for our health. We need to take responsibility for our own bodies by fuelling them with more real, whole food and moving deliberately and often.

There is no shortcut: it is the only recipe for a healthy life.

fter decades of defending our growing plumpness by shifting the frame to accommodate a “new normal”, we have got ourselves into a big, fat pickle.

We don’t exercise and are awash with boxes and packets, delivered with flashy ads on social media and TV. We are dying of artificialness and excesses, with heart disease and diabetes picking off the population. For the first time in human history, the poorest nations are the fattest and obesity kills more people worldwide than smoking.

The most recent official health statistics for Queensland show that 32 per cent of adults are now obese and another 33 per cent are overweight.

The newest figures show a Queensland Government program aimed at helping us help ourselves failed miserably.

In 2014, when 58 per cent of Queensland was overweight or obese, the Health and Wellbeing Strategic Framework was developed to reduce that number to 55 per cent by 2020. And here we are at 65 per cent.

But to say anything at all about obesity is to risk being written off as victim blaming

I

was running late for a meeting with the bank the other day, which was not ideal. There was still a chance of being just a tad late when I got caught in traffic just a breath away from my destination – I was going to be ‘late’ late. It was frustrating, but I did have something in common with the cause of my lateness; an Energex pole truck that cost me two changes of lights on top of Alex hill.

It reminded me of when I worked for SEQEB back in the ’80s doing the same job as the bloke in front of me, but he had a shiny new truck with a crane on it and about five neatly tied power poles on the back of his truck, which was a far cry from yours truly in 1981.

I was desperate for a job after getting back home from Longreach and one came up at Landsborough at the pole dump. At the interview I was asked did I have a semi licence and my reply was that I had a licence to drive everything but a road train, which was true, partly anyway. Yes I had the licence but I had never driven anything bigger than a utility.

To digress, a few years earlier I had stupidly lost my licence and when I was

due to get it back, a mate said he knew a bloke who knew a bloke who would give me my licence without a test, which sounded good to me. It’s now outside the statute of limitations, so I can tell the story.

I had to turn up at a country cop shop to see the bloke who pushed a book of raffle tickets in my direction and told me if I bought the book, no test. Sounded good to me and I handed over twenty bucks and he handed me a licence with every class of vehicle except the road train.

Back to ’81, I get the job and day one when I turn up, my first gig is to drive a fully loaded semi (about 20 power poles) to Brisbane in the pouring rain. I had never driven a semi and to get the poles off, there was no luxury of a crane. The idea was, chock the ones you want to stay on the truck and flick the others off. That was presuming I got to my destination, because when I drove off and cut the first corner, driving that back half of the truck over a traffic island, I had no certainty of getting to Brisbane or in fact out of Landsborough.

How I lasted eight years at the pole dump without killing myself or someone else is a miracle.

hings have been a bit rocky on the home front of late. Everyone is a little frazzled because it is the end of year and that big C-word is bearing down faster than Rudolph can tow Santa’s sleigh.

Our tired temperaments became apparent when I hissed at my husband in a fit of frustration one seemingly innocuous Tuesday night that he cooks like a “deranged maniac”. My husband is a very calm person and he looked me serenely in the eyes and quietly replied: “Okay, well, ‘deranged maniac’ are very strong words, so let’s talk about this.”

Wind back time an hour or so and the household was in full swing with kids coming home late from sport, mess all over the kitchen bench, dogs barking with the excitement of Mum finally arriving home from work carrying grocery bags and just the general loud cacophony of a busy house with a zillion things to get done before bedtime.

My hubby had kindly cooked hamburgers for dinner while I took the kids and got showers and all that jazz underway. They were delicious, with an extra few layers of luxury, including caramelised onion and pickles. But when I

stacked up the plates from everyone’s laps and announced it was my turn to clean up, this is where it all came unstuck. I turned back into the kitchen to find what looked like a crime scene. Dirty frypans were on the stove top. Jars of food sat on the bench with lids sitting lazily next to them. Cheese was scattered on the floor.

It was a big fat mess as though drunk people had partied for a week.

You see, there are two types of people in this world: those who clean as they cook and those who leave the whole glorious mess until the end. I clean as I go because that is the only way to cook. I am not a monster. Hubby lets it all hang loose.

He has no problems making the biggest mess imaginable, as if magic fairies will come and clean it up afterwards. Except that night the fairy was in a foul mood.

So, on this terrible Tuesday night it all came to a yelling head with me telling hubby he cooks like a “deranged maniac’’.

Too strong? Quite possibly. And I did feel a tiny bit guilty afterwards. I don’t think my husband will ever be a clean cook, but I am thankful he at least cooks. And I did catch him screwing the lid back on a jar this week. He is not a silly man. Happy wife: happy life! Hang in there, people!

Since Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital opened its doors eight years ago, nurse Shelley Knight (pictured) has thrived helping grow the hospital’s cancer services and caring for patients.

“It’s very rewarding – the rapport you build with patients in this area, the deeper relationships – in a sense you’re their comfort blanket so you share a little bit of yourself with them,” she says.

Enriching her role as oncology services manager, Shelley is also working as a cancer care navigator at the hospital, coordinating all aspects of patients’ cancer care and being an easy-to-reach contact.

“I feel privileged to be able to journey with people, helping them understand their cancer treatment plan, answering questions, giving support and coordinating care so they and their loved ones can focus on what matters most.”

Ms Knight says patients receiving treatment at Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital are generally able to see their oncologist more than in the public system, they avoid waiting lists, and have greater continuity of care and streamlined transitions between services.

She has cared for patients from young adults to those in their nineties, with a fairly even number of males and females, and says it is such an individual journey.

“We care for patients with such a wide range of cancers here, and it’s so diverse with treatments – some patients have surgery, some chemotherapy, some radiotherapy, some a combination of treatments.

“People presume everyone who has treatment loses hair, but the majority

Over the past eight years, Ms Knight has seen advancement in cancer treatment – including safety around prescribing and administering chemotherapy, and the use of drugs to minimise side effects.

“I think it’s the consistency of staff and very personalised care we offer that really sets us apart from other hospitals – and it’s great having clinical trials available on site.

“The clinical trials option means patients we’ve seen for a long time and who may be coming to their last line of treatment may be able to get on a trial in the same environment they’re familiar with, with the same staff they’ve built relationships with.”

Her team relocated from the hospital’s ground floor to a light-filled space on level two and Ms Knight explains the ‘journey tree’ mural in the unit’s centre.

“Most other cancer care units have patients ring a bell when they complete treatment but that can be confronting to some. So in our unit, patients can put their fingerprints on our journey tree mural any time to mark their journey.”

SKIN CANCER RISK IN QUEENSLAND We live in one of the sunniest and most beautiful parts of Australia – and we have the highest skin cancer rates in the world. Dr Christina Sander, dermatologist at Central Dermatology Clinic Sunshine Coast, says the term skin cancer is used for non-melanoma skin cancers (BCCs and SCCs) and melanoma.

“Unfortunately, both forms are extremely common for people living on the Sunshine Coast.

Melanoma is the deadliest of all skin cancers and is the third most common cancer in Australian men and women.

Almost 14,000 Australians are expected to be diagnosed with melanoma in 2017.

In young Australians melanoma is the most common cancer and kills more young Australians than any other cancer.

More than 1400 Australians died from melanoma in 2014 and in 2017, more than 1800 Australians are expected to die from melanoma. That is five people each day,” she says.

While 90 per cent of people with melanoma are able to be cured by having the primary melanoma removed by surgery, in the other 10 per cent of cases, life-threatening spread will have occurred already, Ms Sander adds.

“Over the past five years, the use of surgery plus additional treatments including immunotherapy have significantly extended the life expectancy in people with advanced disease (where the melanoma has spread to other organs). Extensive research is undertaken in Queensland, Australia and all over the world to find new targeted therapies.

“Non-melanoma skin cancers are the

most common cancers in Australia, however most are not life threatening.

Treatment usually involves surgery, cryotherapy, cream treatments or radiation. Sometimes, treatment can be very extensive and disfiguring.”

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) accounts for about 70 per cent of non-melanoma skin cancers. It begins in the lower layer of the epidermis (top, outer layer of the skin). It can appear anywhere on the body but most commonly develops on parts of the body that receive high or intermittent sun exposure (head, face, neck, shoulders and back).

BCC often has no symptoms and tends to grow slowly without spreading to other parts of the body.

Symptoms of BCC may include: • a pearly lump • a scaly, dry area that is shiny and pale or bright pink in colour.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) accounts for about 30 per cent of non-melanoma skin cancers. It begins in the upper layer of the epidermis and usually appears where the skin has had most exposure to the sun. SCC generally grows quickly over weeks or months and can spread to lymph nodes (metastasize).

Squamous cell carcinoma symptoms may include: • thickened red, scaly spot

• rapidly growing lump • looks like a sore that has not healed • may be tender to touch.

“On the Sunshine Coast, the number of people being diagnosed with melanoma and other skin cancers each year is still rising. This is despite good awareness of the right sun protection measures. With current knowledge though it is evident that childhood sun exposure and in particular sun burns are the major risk factors,” Ms Sander says.

“The best advice is to limit sun exposure during peak hours, to seek shade and cover up as much as skin as possible. Avoid all-day sports activities and events in summer as you will not be able to protect your skin adequately.

“The most important factors to develop melanoma or other skin cancers include personal history of skin cancer, family history, fair skin, blue eyes and red hair, atypical moles, childhood history of sun burns, use of solariums and excessive sunbaking history.

“The best advice is to protect your skin from the sun as much as possible and get your skin checked regularly. If you have many of the above mentioned risk factors you should get checked twice a year.”

A treatment already on the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme will be expanded to help treat leukaemia.

Listed Venclexta is being expanded for the treatment of acute myeloid leukaemia for use in combination with azacitidine, which health minister Greg Hunt believes will give sufferers more options and better outcomes. “Around 340 Australian patients a year will benefit from this expanded listing, who without the PBS subsidy would pay more than $88,800 per course of treatment,” Mr Hunt says.

“From December 1, they’ll pay $41.30 per script or $6.60 with a concession card.”

In 2021, almost 5000 Australians were diagnosed with leukaemia.

It’s estimated around 1100 people are diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia each year, which becomes more common with age and mostly occurs after 65.

AML affects the blood and bone marrow as leukaemia cells overwhelm other blood cells, preventing them carrying out normal functions like fighting infection, providing oxygen and preventing bleeding.

Without treatment, people develop severe infections or other serious

Back pain is one of the most common causes of pain for adults. It can occur when muscles, tendons or other tissues in the back are strained, overused or have been injured.

While often mild, in some cases it can be debilitating and severe, even causing permanent damage and disability.

Arthritis, spinal stenosis, bone spurs, spinal injuries, herniated discs and other conditions are often to blame. Left untreated, back pain can lead to more significant problems that may require surgical intervention or ongoing treatment.

Many people dismiss back pain as a simple discomfort and wait it out, hoping it will eventually pass. But as a possible warning sign of serious health problems such as sciatica, nerve damage or infection, experiencing back pain means you should see your doctor immediately.

Even though the cause of back pain is often unknown, ignoring it is never a good idea. Take care not to aggravate it and see your doctor who may refer you to a specialist such as a neurosurgeon.

I was recently a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Business Awards. While I was slightly disappointed, for a couple hours, not to be a winner on the night, what I realised as I listened to all the winners grace the stage was that my journey had only just begun.

The winners were outstanding and inspiring. If I take nothing else away from this process it is that there will always be things you can do to push yourself to be better and to do better.

I am so thrilled for all winners, and I thank them deeply for inspiring me to continue to improve my business.

Just because you don’t take the top prize does not mean you are not worthy.

Look at those holding the trophy and see with clear eyes, not clouded by jealously or judgment, what makes them incredible and learn from them.

I am excited to do this all again next year. And while I still may not win, what I do know is I will be even better than where I stand right now at this point in time.

Honest self-reflection leads to improvement and that is something to look forward to! Be open to the process and great things will come.

I wonder what comes to mind when you read the word hypnosis?

For many it is mind control, acting like a chicken or being made to do something you don’t want to.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that can affect people of all ages, and occurs when acidic stomach juices, food or fluid reverse flows from the stomach into the oesophagus.

SERIOUS BUYERS COME OUT WHEN IT RAINS Make sure you’ve given some thought to how your home presents when it’s raining. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

A

s the rainy season approaches vendors should consider some simple but important steps to successfully presenting their home during this time.

It’s worth the effort as serious buyers will be there while the rain may put a stop to meandering ‘tyre kickers’.

Home Sunshine Coast agent Kate Jewry tells buyers it’s the best time to look at a property. “If you love it in stormy weather, you will love it any other time of the year,” she adds.

Top of the list for owners is to remember first impressions are key when preparing a home for inspection.

Start with considering how buyers will access the property, recommends Ray White agent Andrew Garland. If they need to walk across grass to reach the front door, consider setting up an alternative access along a path so grass and dirt isn’t dragged into the home.

He also suggests owners keep an eye on the condition of the garden to ensure it looks good during the rainy season, including keeping grass mowed.

“Prune the garden now and fill in any low-lying areas,” Ms Jewry adds.

“If you love it in stormy weather, you will love it at any time of year” If there are leaks around the house, which may have been forgotten during the winter, they should be attended to before the house is put on the market.

“The rain is a great time to show up problems,” Mr Garland says. “A lot of people, particularly if they are interested in a property, will come and have a look in the rain to see if they can identify drainage issues or roof leaks.”

While using air-conditioning during a storm is understandable, Mr Garland

recommends at other times consider using natural ventilation to enhance the inspection experience.

Ms Jewry suggests using both a dehumidifier to draw in moisture in the home and clove oil on mould.

Checking all your lights are working is another tip. And if the day is stormy, turning on lights in rooms that may otherwise appear too dark.

IS IT TIME FOR VENDORS TO REASSESS THEIR EXPECTATIONS? Waterfront homes are seeing less interest from buyers than has been shown over the past 18 months. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

T

he buying frenzy of the last 18 months has cooled in the past few weeks, noted waterfront house specialist from Next Property Group, Richard Scrivener.

The vendors have pretty much had it all their way during the buoyant market but now may be the time for them to rethink their price expectations. “You have to listen to what the buyers are willing to pay,” he added.

Mr Scrivener said the waterfront house market has seen a bit of softening in the past two to three weeks.

“We are coming into a quieter period of the marketplace anyway but there is still some hesitancy from buyers with the borders opening up around December 17; there is probably a little bit of reluctance to buy without coming up,” he said.

“A lot of our sellers are expecting that once the borders open there will be a mad rush of buyers coming up to buy but we’ve not seen that during the last two-year period. I can’t imagine it’s going to change.

“I think it’s softened a bit and that’s showing in our auction results.

“I think people don’t want to pay more than they have to, plus banks are tightening up on their lending.

“It’s difficult to say why it has quietened, it just has.”

Next Property Group’s listing of the five-bedroom house at 15 Moondarra Crescent in Mooloolaba passed in at auction on Saturday at $2.5-million. It’s now on the market for over $2.795-million.

Mr Scrivener said the result was similar to last week’s auction of the five-bedroom house at 13 Myoora Court in Minyama.

“We had a lot of interested parties prior to the auction and a couple of offers prior, but they weren’t enough,” Mr Scrivener added. He said he has been

terms of how it was designed and built.

“With not many knockdowns and rebuilds becoming available in that location, the buyers were happy to spend that little bit extra to get something that is ready and not have to wait 18 months or more for a builder to be available.”

RIVERVIEW SALE VERY CLOSE

The delighted vendors of 58c Alfriston Drive in Buderim listed by Scott Henshaw of Define Property speaking to clients in Adelaide who said their market is doing the same as the Coast over the last few weeks.

“It’s the same in Melbourne and Sydney,” Mr Scrivener added.

“I think once the borders are open there will be a change in the market during January and February.”

DRY BLOCK RECORD But when it comes to dry block house sales, Mooloolaba continues to charge ahead.

The four-bedroom, ‘move in and live’ house at 40 Brentwood Avenue in Mooloolaba sold under the hammer for $2.1-million to a Buderim buyer. “The last highest one was $1.85-million early in the year,” said Ray White agent Taylor Sierp.

The crowd was out to watch six registered bidders – all locals – fight for a stake in what he describes as “the most coveted street” in Mooloolaba.

“That’s the blue-chip location for dry blocks,” Mr Sierp said. “It’s 800 metres to beach and the home is exceptional in

Listing agent Scott Henshaw of Define Property said nine registered bidders – two from both New Wouth Wales and Victoria on the phone, and the rest there in person – were quickly whittled down to four bidders.

The bidding opened with an aggressive $1.1 million.

It then took less than 10 minutes

DEVELOPER SECURES BUDERIM PRIZE The three-bedroom home on the 1267 sqm corner block at 2 Miljee Court in Buderim was ripe for a buyer with the drive and money to develop the original home into something magnificent.

The property has been in the hands of the owner, a teacher at the local school, for 30 years.

Ray White chief auctioneer Jake Loiero said six registered bidders were lined up for the Saturday auction.

“It was very quick,” he said. “There were just three bids, a quick pause to negotiate, and then it was done.”

The house sold under the hammer for $1.025 million to a local builder who will do a full rebuild. “A big, prestigious home will go there,” Mr Loiero added.

FISHING REPORT with Steve Dingle Another week with average weather to get offshore. A few reports of the odd mackerel on the inner reefs and some good mixed bags of fish at Sunshine and Caloundra 12 mile. The rivers and the Pumicestone Passage have the safe bet to wet a line with the best reports of flathead and whiting coming from the Maroochy and Caloundra waterways. The Mooloolah has still been the better place to chase mangrove jack and trevally, but some good reports have started to come from Coochin Creek of late. The beaches have been quiet due to the weather, but if you get the chance, a late afternoon fish along Wurtulla, Currimundi would be worth a look. Borumba and Lake McDonald have both been fishing well for bass.
